Phones / Global Chip Shortage: Key Android Manufacturer Warns Of Price Increase by georgehayu: 11:37pm On Mar 31, 2021
Xiaomi president Wang Xiang has warned that the global chip crisis could cause the company to increase prices of its products. That's because the shortage is putting upward pressure on costs. The Chinese company is currently the third largest manufacturer of smartphones.
The shortage has not just affected the production of smartphones, but also gaming consoles and the auto sector.

The supply crunch can primarily be attributed to the coronavirus. The stay-at-home era caused by pandemic pushed demand for home-networking equipment and consumer electronics beyond estimated levels. This caused some businesses to stockpile, and they now have more inventory than usual. Huawei also began hoarding components around the same time to ensure survival from restrictions imposed by the US. The situation was exacerbated by the February Texas storm which impacted Samsung's operations in Austin.
The South Korean giant is one of the biggest smartphone chip manufacturers.

Qualcomm is also struggling to meet orders and this has already started disrupting the production of Samsung's low and mid-range smartphones. The chaebol has already cautioned that it's dealing with a “serious imbalance” in semiconductors globally. The shortage is reportedly also cramping Snapdragon 888's production.

According to research firm Trendforce, a shortfall in production of Qualcomm's 5G radio frequency chips could reduce smartphone output by 5 percent in the second quarter,

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which makes chips for Apple, has also been impacted but the Cupertino giant has not been affected so far.
The shortages are expected to remain a problem into next year and this could pose a problem for Apple. Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which assembles the iPhone, has also warned that it will take time to resolve the chip supply imbalance.

Phones / New Features And A New Name Are Reportedly Coming To Xiaomi's 6th Gen Bracelet by georgehayu: 11:30pm On Mar 31, 2021
Xiaomi is one of the hottest smartphone manufacturers on the planet. Besides its handsets, Xiaomi is known for its Mi Band fitness tracker. Originally unveiled in July 2014, the device is typical Xiaomi since it offers plenty of features at a better than reasonable price. Last June, the domestic version of the device went on sale followed a month later by the release of the Global variant.

Earlier this month Huami, the company that builds the Mi Band for Xiaomi, filed its EU Declaration of Conformity. This is a document that a manufacturer must sign to be able to sell their goods in the EU. It indicates that a specific product is in compliance with EU requirements. The document also includes a photo of Xiaomi's next fitness tracker and its two-prong charging cord.

Last year, Xiaomi failed to deliver on two features that were rumored for the device, a blood oxygen sensor that measures whether the user is pushing enough oxygen to his extremities, and support for Amazon digital assistant Alexa. However, shortly after the release of the Mi Band 5, Huami's Amazfit Band 5 was launched and included those two features. That means that we should expect both features this year for Xiaomi's fitness tracker.

According to Gadgets and Wearables, a tipster says that the Mi Band 6 could be equipped with GPS. But considering the pricing of other fitness trackers with this feature, Xiaomi might save GPS for a premium priced version of the device. After all, the non-NFC variant of the Mi Band 5 is priced at around $35. Including GPS could cause that number to double. Another possibility for the new fitness tracker could be an altimeter to track the number of floors the wearer has climbed. The Mi Band 6 also might allow users to respond to SMS messages using pre-set responses. And we could see integration with WhatsApp and Telegram.

The number of sports modes, according to this tipster, will soar from 19 to 30 with the inclusion of Indoor fitness, Indoor ice skating, HIIT, Core training, Stretching, Stepper, Gymnastics, Pilates, Street dance, Dance, Zumba, Cricket, Bowling, Basketball, Volleyball, Table tennis, Badminton, Boxing and Kickboxing.

Regulatory filings have been made in Indonesia and in India under the model number XMSH15HM. The Indonesian filing refers to the product as the Smart Band 6. And on Twitter, Xiaomi has posted a teaser for the Smart Band 6. It appears that Xiaomi plans on releasing its fitness tracker earlier than last year (which, to reiterate, was in June for the domestic model and July for the global unit). More importantly, it looks as though the device will have a new name! If you're a fan of the product, or you're seeking a low-priced fitness tracker representing great value, stay tuned.

Science/Technology / Xiaomi CEO Confirms Mi 11 Retail Box Will Not Come With A Charger by georgehayu: 6:02am On Dec 31, 2020
When Apple ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack a few years ago, some Android phone makers were quick to mock the Cupertino-based tech giant's decision, only to follow suit later on. Well, history is repeating itself.

Apple launched the iPhone 12 lineup in October and removed the in-box charger and earphones citing environmental reasons. Xiaomi took a jab at Apple for not including the adapter with the box, but the company is following the footsteps of Apple as its CEO Lei Jun today confirmed that the Mi 11 arriving on December 28 will not have a charger in the retail package.

Lei cited environmental protection as a reason for the removal of the charger from Mi 11's box and said that he's aware this decision may not go down well with a lot of customers.
Additionally, Jun revealed the design of Mi 11's retail box, which is not only thinner compared to other phones' boxes that come with a charger, but also has a few features of the Mi 11 written on it: 108MP camera, Super AMOLED screen, HDR10+ certification, and audio tuning by Harman Kardon.

A video posted by Jun showing the Mi 11's box has Chinese text that translates to "Pack light in 2021", which suggests future Xiaomi smartphones will also ship without a charger.

That's hardly a surprise, though, since this is likely going to be an industry trend moving forward, so be prepared to purchase a charger separately for your new smartphone if the one you own currently isn't compatible.

TV/Movies / Mulan Director Explains Mushu’s Absence From The Disney+ Movie by georgehayu: 10:00pm On Sep 08, 2020
Disney’s adaptation of Mulan is different from its recent live-action counterparts in a few key ways. Though it follows the basic premise of the 1998 animated feature, it does away with some of the characters and songs that made the original Mulan a beloved Disney classic. That includes Mushu, the lovable talking dragon -- but, Mulan’s director says there was an important reason for excluding him from the new film.

When fans first learned that Mushu wouldn’t make an appearance in the live-action Mulan, they weren’t happy. However, the film’s director, Niki Caro, told USA Today that while she acknowledges the role Mushu played in the original film, the new adaptation required some big narrative changes:

Now that Mulan has hit Disney+, fans have been able to see how some of the changes Niki Caro made play out on screen. While there is no Mushu, Mulan does encounter a mystical entity that helps guide her journey: a phoenix -- albeit, one that doesn’t talk.

Niki Caro is right, in that the live-action Mulan leans much more heavily into the realistic elements of the titular heroine’s story. It follows her character’s evolution more closely, and with greater detail. It would have been hard for them to incorporate a talking dragon and still keep the narrative tone that the director tries to strike throughout the film. However, it is still a Disney movie, and that means there are some elements of magic.

Throughout the film, Mulan encounters the magical bird when she is in need of encouragement. We first see it, in statue form, early in the film when the future warrior is still a child. Later on, it comes to life and serves as a symbol of her strength and perseverance. While it doesn’t exactly provide the comical banter that Mushu injected into the original Mulan, it is one part of the film that rides the line between realism and fantasy.

It’s too early to tell whether the world will embrace the narrative changes in Mulan. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics have had generally positive things to say about the new film, while fan feedback has been a bit more mixed. CinemaBlend’s own Sarah El-Mahmoud gave Mulan a four-star review and praised the film for striking a “graceful balance” between the original animated film’s beloved elements and its own unique take on the story.

Webmasters / Google Chrome Gets A Shared Clipboard For Android And PC by georgehayu: 12:00pm On Sep 14, 2019
Google Chrome commanding nearly 70 percent of the desktop browser market gives the Mountain View-based search giant the opportunity to build very exciting features that expand the application beyond its standard purpose.

In other words, because it has so many users, Google Chrome can help bring together two worlds, the ones of desktops and mobile devices.

And the first step in this direction appears to be a shared clipboard that allows users to copy on one device and paste on another, all using nothing more than Google Chrome.

The first time I wrote about the shared clipboard was earlier this year when Google started the work on this feature and added some experimental flags to the Canary build of the browser. At that time, however, the feature wasn’t yet working, and this made its future rather uncertain.
"The Shared Clipboard is alive"

More recently, however, Google Chrome Canary 79 was updated with this shared clipboard, and the guys over at XDA discovered that you can enable it with three different flags:

Enable receiver device to handle shared clipboard feature

Enable shared clipboard feature signals to be handled

Sync Clipboard Service

Once the shared clipboard is enabled, selecting content and right-clicking it should bring up a new option in the context menu that reads “Send text to device.” Doing this generates a notification on the smartphone revealing that new text has been added to the clipboard, and you can then paste it normally in any text field.

For now, everything seems to be working quite smoothly, and if nothing major happens in the meantime, it could be part of the very next stable release of Google Chrome.

Needless to say, the search company hasn’t announced this feature yet, but given everything is working so smoothly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it going live rather sooner than later.

Webmasters / Debian Gnu/linux 10 "Buster" Operating System To Be Released On July 6th, 2019 by georgehayu: 10:44pm On Jun 12, 2019
The Debian Project announced the proposed release date of their long-anticipated Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster" operating system, a major release that brings many new features and enhancements.

Work on the Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster" operating system series started two years ago, since early July 2017, a couple of weeks after the release of the Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" series, which is currently the latest stable version and with nine point releases already out the door.

Now, two years later, we finally have an official release date for Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster," which appears to hit the streets as soon as next month. Debian Project's Niels Thykier wrote in a recent mailing list announcement that they plan to release Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster" on July 6th, 2019.

"We plan to release on 2019-07-06," said Niels Thykier on behalf of the Debian release team. "In the last week prior to the freeze, testing will be completely frozen and only emergency bug fixes will be considered in this period. Please consider Tuesday the 2019-06-25 at 13:00 UTC the absolute last moment for submitting unblock requests for buster."
"What's new in Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster""

There are numerous new features and enhancements coming to the Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster" operating system series, including support for the latest LTS (Long Term Support) Linux kernel series, support for new devices, improved support for existing hardware, as well as up-to-date packages and latest security patches.

As expected, Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster" will launch with live and installable ISO images for new deployments. We will have more details about Debian GNU/Linux 10's new features when it will be released next month, but, until then, we recommend to keep your Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" installations up to date with the latest security and bug fixes from the official software repositories.

Webmasters / Microsoft Releases Updates KB4503292 And KB4503276 For Windows 7 And 8.1 by georgehayu: 12:42pm On Jun 12, 2019
Microsoft has shipped the typical monthly rollups for Windows 7 and 8.1 devices as the company fixes security and non-security bugs on the two platforms.

First off, there’s monthly rollup KB4503292 and security-only update KB4503269 for Windows 7.

With Windows 7 reaching the end-of-support in January 2020, this is one of the last Patch Tuesday rollouts for the 2009 operating system, and Microsoft obviously recommends users to switch to Windows 10 as soon as possible.

The aforementioned rollup comes to resolve an issue hitting Internet Explorer and breaking down HTTP and HTTPS string character limit for URLs. In terms of security, Microsoft resolves issues in the Windows App Platform and Frameworks, the Microsoft Graphics Component, and the Windows Shell.

There are two known issues, one of which affects McAfee security products that could lead to the system no longer capable of booting. The second causes IE11 to stop working when loading Power BI reports.
"Windows 8.1 improvements"

As far as Windows 8.1 devices are concerned, they are provided with monthly rollup KB4503276 and security-only update KB4503290,

In addition to the fixes that are included in the Windows 7 monthly rollup, the Windows 8.1 release also brings fixes for an issue hitting the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE), while also resolving a vulnerability hitting Bluetooth connections.

“Addresses a security vulnerability by intentionally preventing connections between Windows and Bluetooth devices that are not secure and use well-known keys to encrypt connections, including security fobs. If BTHUSB Event 22 in the Event Viewer states, “Your Bluetooth device attempted to establish a debug connection….”, then your system is affected. Contact your Bluetooth device manufacturer to determine if a device update exists,” Microsoft explains.

There are three issues in these updates, two of which also exist in the Windows 7 monthly rollup. The third blocks certain operations on files or folders on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV).

Because security vulnerabilities are resolved, users are recommended to patch their devices as soon as possible.
