Sports / Heading A Ball Can Cause Brain Damage**footballers Beware! by ghands(m): 7:59am On Feb 15, 2017 |
*Expert says children shouldn’t do more than five headers in a match Parents often worry about their children playing rugby. But should football be a concern, too?In a study to be published this week, British scientists investigating the autopsies on six retired professional footballers with dementia found they had a form of the disease associated with blows to the head, perhaps from headers. They had evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive degenerative disease usually associated with boxing. The research follows a study at the University of Stirling, published last year, which found ‘significant’ changes in the brain’s short-term memory function from routine heading practice. Researchers asked 19 footballers to head a ball 20 times as if they were heading from a powerful corner kick. They were tested before and afterwards, and scientists found their memory test performance was reduced by between 41 and 67 per cent — although it reverted to normal within 24 hours. Concerns about repeated heading are not new. When former England striker Jeff Astle died in 2002 aged 59, having suffered from dementia, a coroner found the condition was caused by repeatedly heading footballs. Re-examination of his brain tissue in 2014 revealed that he had CTE.Modern footballs are lighter than those Astle headed, yet there may still be cause for concern. “A header is like a punch to the head,” says Dr. Tom Crisp, a consultant in sport and exercise medicine at the London Independent Hospital. This month, United States (U.S.) researchers found that players who headed the ball a lot were three times more likely to suffer concussion symptoms — which include headache, nausea and confusion — than those who didn’t. If the player has a second head knock while concussed, it can cause more serious damage, according to Dr Nicholas Davies, a consultant neurologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Spire Parkway Hospital in Birmingham. “If there is mild concussion, a player might not realise it. If they then suffer another blow in quick succession, it could lead to brain injury,” he says. More insidious is the potential for repeated headers to cause long-term sub-concussive damage — injury to the brain without any obvious symptoms, suggests Dr. Michael Grey, a neuroscientist from the University of Birmingham. Heading the ball over a period of years could damage the white matter (nerve fibres that connect various brain regions), leading to loss of functions such as reasoning, he suggests. So, too, are their neck muscles, which means they have less strength to take the force of the ball’s impact (footballs can travel at 34mph in recreational play and more than double that in professional play). Two years ago, the United States Soccer Federation banned children aged ten and under from heading footballs, following a lawsuit. While more research is needed, children should avoid practising headers many times a day, says John Hardy, a professor of neuroscience at University College London. Tony Kochhar, professor of sports science at the University of Greenwich, suggests that ‘at the very least, children playing school football should wear headguards or be prevented from doing more than five headers a match’. |

Music/Radio / The Importance Of Music by ghands(m): 12:41am On Apr 25, 2016 |
1. Music is the Key to Creativity. Music fuels the mind and thus fuels our creativity. A Creative mind has the ability to make discoveries and create innovations. The greatest minds and thinkers like Albert Einstein, Mozart, and Frank Lloyd Wright all had something in common in that they were constantly exploring their imagination and creativity. Listening to instrumental music challenges one to listen and tell a story about what one hears. In the same sense, playing a musical instrument gives you the ability to tell the story without words. Both require maximum right brain usage which not only exercises ones creativity but also ones intellect. The strength of all the Arts including writing, painting, dance, and theater have the ability to create a similar effect. 2. Music makes Education more enjoyable. Music can be very engaging in the classroom and is a great tool for memorization. I’m sure if more teachers used song to teach the multiplication tables, kids would retain that information much quicker. Besides the obvious, Music teaches us self discipline and time management skills that you cannot get anywhere else. When you study an instrument on a regular basis you work on concrete ideas and take small steps to achieve larger goals. This way of thinking organizes the wiring in your brain to start looking at Learning in a new light. In raising children, Music education can be used to keep kids focused and keep them off the streets. Instead of running around and causing mischief, your child may be practicing piano or rehearsing music with friends. Unfortunately, some forms of music can influence children in negative ways. It is well known that music has a power to influence the way we dress, think, speak, and live our lives. Profane and violent lyrics can have a negative influence on children. Looking back at my High School days, I notice that I followed the herd when it came to listening to Hip-hop and doing things that were “cool” to look tough and be like the “Gangsta” image that was portrayed. When I got to college, I realized how much it pervaded my lifestyle and when I got into Jazz, my entire lifestyle began to change. 3. Music is the Language of the Universe. You’ve heard this time and time again, but what does it mean exactly? Music is universal in that there are no boundaries to understanding music. Even animals like Birds, Dogs, and Whales can understand music to a certain degree. It transcends all boundaries of communication because you can speak and tell stories to someone on the other side of the planet, even though you both don’t speak the same language. But I believe its important for one to have an open mind in order to be in touch with that sense of understanding. Many people immediately push away certain styles of music without having explored what it has to offer. Not all styles will appeal or resonate with a person, but one may discover a new part of ones self when you are open to all the possibilities. |
