President Joe Biden has called for "peace and calm" in the wake of the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota, saying his death does not justify violence or looting.

Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by female police officer on Sunday afternoon during a traffic stop in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center.

An officer's body camera footage released on Monday indicated that Wright got out of his car, but then got back in. It's not clear why, but Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon told reporters it appeared from the video that Wright was trying to leave the scene. Gannon also said that the video appeared to show an officer had shouted "Taser!" but fired her handgun accidentally, killing Daunte Wright.

According to Wright's mother, who had spoken to her son before the shooting, he was pulled over for having an air freshener hanging from his rearview mirror, which is illegal in Minnesota.

Police said Monday that he was stopped for a traffic violation. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said he believes, based on the body camera video, that the officer who shot Wright mistakenly believed she was firing a Taser and not her gun.

Wright was shot about 14 miles north of where George Floyd, another black man was killed last year. Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes.

In a tweet, Biden wrote: "Today I’m thinking about Daunte Wright and his family and the pain, anger, and trauma that Black America experiences every day. While we await a full investigation, we know what we need to do to move forward: rebuild trust and ensure accountability so no one is above the law."

Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office about Wright's death Sunday, President Biden said: "I haven't called Daunte Wright's family, but my prayers are with the family. It's really a tragic thing that happened. The question is was it an accident? Was it intentional? A 28-year-old man has died after allegedly forced him to do 300 squat-like exercises by police as punishment for violating Covid-19 quarantine rules in Philippines.

Darren Manaog Peñaredondo, 28, was out after 6 p.m. April 1 buying drinking water in his city of General Trias, Cavite, when he was reportedly caught by authorities. The Cavite province currently has a strict curfew in place from 6 p.m to 5 a.m.

Adrian Lucena, the victim’s relative, said in a Facebook post that Mr. Penaredondo and others found violating the curfew were told to do 100 squat-like exercises at a shopping plaza. He said authorities allegedly told them they would have to repeat the exercises if they were not in sync and the group ended up doing the exercise 300 times.

After completing the grueling punishment, Peñaredondo reportedly returned home, with help from the other curfew violator, around 8 a.m the following morning.

Mr Penaredondo’s partner Reichelyn Balce told local news outlet Rappler that he was in obvious pain and struggled to walk the entire time when he got home.

“That whole day, he struggled to walk, he was just crawling on the floor just to get up,” Balce said. “But I did not take that seriously because he said his knees and thighs were aching, as was his body.”

Peñaredondo suffered a seizure later in the evening and despite being briefly revived, he passed away around 10 p.m., per the Guardian.

Mr Penaredondo’s partner Reichelyn Balce told local news outlet Rappler that Mr Penaredondo struggled to move by himself the next day because of fatigue. She said he struggled to walk the entire day and was just crawling.

Following Peñaredondo’s death, police chief of General Trias city, Marlo Solero said there is no physical punishment for quarantine violators. He said they are given lectures and sometimes made to do community service, like picking up litter.

The police chief said they have photos to prove the victim wasn't physically hurt. He said their investigation showed that none of the staff on duty that night ordered the violators to exercise.

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Gumi appeared on Channels TV today to make a case for criminal herdsmen and bandits.

The cleric, who oftentimes goes into the hideouts of bandits to negotiate with them after they carry out mass kidnappings, said on TV that killer herdsmen shouldn't be a word because when they kill, it's accidental. He added that some of them are on drugs.

When the interviewer pointed out to him that these herdsmen and the bandits have been known to cause destruction to lives and properties, the cleric said they do so in revenge.

He likened them to bees that attack when their colony is threatened.

He said: "You call them killer herdsmen, how many people did they kill? They only kill... sometimes, some of them are on drugs. So, that killing is not killing to... They want the money so they're ready...

"When they kill, it's mostly accidental, maybe somebody they took who is sick.

"But tell me who they've killed. How many? Few."
