Education / Things I Thought Would Be A Bigger Deal As An Undergraduate Student by gomtas: 12:51pm On Feb 22, 2019
As an undergraduate student, I unconsciously ascribed so much importance to things than they really were. I rode in this trail for as much as my armature days in university lasted. Don’t get it wrong, there is nothing wrong with being serious with your studies but I found myself making less important things so big as though my life depends on it.

This may also be part of your experience; you were more serious in first semester year one. Or you were more serious in the early weeks of your admission into the university especially as it pertains to lectures. But at some point you, just like me began to take things lightly maybe because I quickly got used to the system. Getting a project topic and gathering research materials for instance was one big fear for me, not until I reached the research class.

So here are the things I thought would be such a big deal as a university undergraduate.

Answering examination questions: The fear for the nature of examination questions was thrilling. You know that feeling when a senior colleague hands you past questions and then you realize you are still empty.

I thought I was going to read my head out to be able to attempt such questions, but fortunately, every other “next level” I attained was just the miracle I needed.

Making it to top of the class: When I first heard of GPA, CGPA, credit hour etc. that fresher enthusiasm calmed to a fault. Infact, I was so sure I was no more in secondary school; I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

But after my first and second semester results, I was motivated to make at least a second class upper. Trust me, it was that easy.

Getting in touch with lecturers: I used to think those class room preachers were gods. The only personal thing I thought I was going to do was to ask questions. But one thing led to another and am miss popular all of a sudden.

Graduating with first class: Not just me this time, most of my school mates had this myth that no one ever makes a first class in my department. And so, we all geared to reach for at least a second class upper. Although we had good chances, we realized that it wasn’t going to be such a big deal if only if we added extra effort.

Writing an undergraduate project: From choosing research project topics, to getting them approved to gathering research materials, I have always thought It was so much a burden. But as an undergraduate student, everything falls in place with time. When I got into the research class then I realized that my only then is ignorance.

Education / How Much Opportunity Do Students In Nigeria Have To Study In Different Ways? by gomtas: 4:05pm On Feb 20, 2019
Think about a Nigeria where schools are built to meet the career need of students, not the conventional everyday professions. Think about a school system where learning facilities are selectively deployed to permit certain skill learning and project based experiences rather than hours of class room sermons, routine assignment submission and seasonal examinations. Do our schools really allow students to enhance their talents or do they always have to attend extra lessons after school to acquire such skills and then expect them to present undergraduate projects at the end of their school year.

Megan Power, a learning experience designer wrote and I quote “So much of what you hear about school choice has to do with funding, accountability and public versus private schools. These are all important conversations on the topic of school choice and should not be ignored. I think it is also important to highlight the other types of school choice that exist. School choice provides students with opportunity to learn in different ways. As a society, we shouldn’t be afraid to harness our innovation spirit to provide a better education for today’s students.”

So what does that extract really imply? It simply points to a learning system where innovation is embedded in the students learning curriculum. In this case, students are not only exposed to reading and writing, they are also exposed to practical innovation series from the least education grades.
This study method is very much applicable as students are prepared to build the society through their experience, collaboration and innovation. Through research, I came to discover that western schools who have adopted this effective learning technique take to visiting business establishments during tours. This is how it works;

Students are made to do a proposal of where they would love to go for the next tour, they do the market research and draft a budget and finally vote whose proposal is to be taken. So from a very young age, students are taught to become opinion leaders, thinkers, innovators, planners and everything else they need to be at once.

For Nigeria and for all I care, many of our big schools are built to adopt old and often conventional learning methods. There is public and private schools but that is just an instrument of class distinction. This is simply because private schools are more promising and seem to offer better opportunities than the public schools of today. However this gap can be bridged if we adopt to change the entire study methods and focus on what students need and what schools offer to teach. Maybe, atleast public schools will have piece of the pie, no matter how little.
Education / What Is The Difference Between Computer Engineering And Computer Science by gomtas: 4:28pm On Feb 12, 2019
Computer science and computer engineering are two project based fields of study that are interdisciplinary and interdependent. Perhaps people confuse their differences because of the relationship they share. But for avoidance of doubt they are two varying areas where students are taught to build two varying but interdependent features of a computer system. The research material for students in these two fields is a clear indication of the differences.

Let’s take them one after the other first by establishing the scope of computer science and that of computer engineering. We will go further to point out the relationship they share with each other and perhaps identify some research project topics of these two fields.

What about computer science and what area does it cover?
Computer science is the study of how data and instruction is processed, stored, secured and communicated across networking systems. It has to do with the use of instructional computer languages for processing data using mathematical principles to build computer and system softwares. This include the study of techniques for programming softwares, principles for sharing data within and across systems, emulating or perceiving human intelligence and implementing it through statistical principles.

What about computer engineering and what area does it cover?
Computer engineering on the other hand takes a little bit of computer science and electrical engineering. It has to do with the study of building of computer hardwares and general building of computer physical properties. Some of the areas include building micro-processors, motherboards, keyboard, the visual space (monitor), central processing units and the general physical connectivity of computer hardwares.

What is the relationship between computer science and computer engineering?
Computer science and computer engineering however share some very peculiar relationship. While it may not necessarily be termed similarity, the two cannot work without each other. So how does this really happen?

• The entire computer working system relies on the activity of hardwares and softwares. While the hardwares takes cares of the physical connectivity and houses the entire processing body, the software determines what exactly the computer system does. A simple example is a mobile phone and its applications. The phone itself is the hardware while those applications are the softwares.

• They both rely on information and communication technology. This simply means that the kind of computer hardwares and software they build depend heavily on the inventions in technology. As new tech ideas emerge, new softwares and hardwares are built to fit the new innovations.

Here are examples of project topics in computer science and computer engineering
I’m going to give one project topic sample each. This is just to differentiate the two fields a little further.

For computer engineering, the project topic sounds like:
‘Comparative study of the performance of mimo equalizers for wireless communication receivers’.

For computer science, the project topic may sound like:
‘Design and implementation of online vehicle and plate number registration and identification system’

Haven done justice to the issues raised in the beginning, I hope you can now differentiate between computer science and computer engineering.

Education / The Impact Of E- Learning On The Academic Perfromance Of Undergraduates by gomtas: 4:00pm On Jan 10, 2019
This study was designed to examine the impact of e-learning on academic performance in the University of Jos. To seek their opinion on the student's perception of e-learning and academic performance in University of Jos, the 300 and 400level students of the five departments in the Faculty of Education were administered questionnaires. Hypothesis and five-research questions were formulated for testing; these were statistically answered using percentage to establish the student's responses to e-learning and academic performance.

The findings revealed that e-learning has positive impact on the academic performance of the students. The two types of online education are found to be important but there has been a decline in the number of students using e-learning as their main line of acquiring skills while the importance of using e-learning education is to aid learning effectiveness.

Recommendations made on the findings include: improvement on the internet network in Nigeria by the government and the higher institutions. Government should ensure that a minimum standard of requirement is set for schools to get computer facilities to enhances the effective accessing of material on computer education. Education / Risk Implication Of Unemployment And Under Employment In Nigeria by gomtas: 12:34pm On Dec 12, 2018
The Nigerian economy since the attainment of political independence in 1960 has undergone fundamental structural changes resulting to structural shifts which have however not resulted in any significant sustainable economic growth and development to ensure adequate employment opportunity for her youths. Recently, available data show that the Nigerian economy grew relatively in the greater parts of the 1970s, with respect to the oil boom of the 1970s whose extreme profits resulted to wasteful expenditures in the public sector leading to dislocation of the employment factors and also distorted the revenue bases for policy planning. This among many other crises resulted in the introduction of the structural adjustment programme (SAP) in 1986 and the recent economic reforms. The core objective of the economic structural reform is a total restructuring of the Nigerian economy in the face of population explosion.

However, these economic and financial structural reforms put in place did not yield significant results, hence in recent past; there has been an alarming increase in the rate of youth unemployment and its attendant social and economic problems. Unemployment is one of the developmental problems that face every developing economy, and Nigeria is not exempted. Its impact has been felt more by the youths. Nigerian youths from all corners of the country rush to Lagos state in search of white-collar jobs, especially, the graduates. This is because of the believe that Lagos state, being the former Federal Capital State and centre of excellence has more (job) opportunities than other states, necessitating the scuttle to Lagos for greener pastures. Education / Leadership And The Challenges Of Development by gomtas: 3:53pm On Dec 11, 2018
The socio-economic and political development of any country depends largely on the ability of its leadership to facilitate, entrench and sustain good governance. However, when there is a culture of impunity in any society and there is a wide spread of lack of leadership by example to enthrone transparent and qualitative public bureaucracy, a degenerated symptoms of underdevelopment continues to manifest as exemplified particularly in Benue State and Nigeria at large public administration.

The manifestation of symptoms of underdevelopment does not imply that Benue as a state or Nigeria as a country lacks quality and competent human resources to engender development, but the process of enthroning leaders is bedeviled with crisis and it does not provide room for morally upright, competent, visionary leaders to emerge. In this context, Imhonopi and Ugochukwu vehemently assert that Nigeria is richly endowed by providence with human and material resources critical for national development and advancement. However, since gaining political independence, Nigeria has continued to meander the path befitting failed, weak and “juvenile” states. To get the complete work, click on Codemint.net

Presently, ICT is having dramatic influence on almost all areas of human activities and one of the areas of economic activities in which this influence is most manifest is the banking sector. The banking industry is one of the critical sectors of the economy which makes invaluable contributions to the pace of economic growth and development of nations. However, this study seeks to examine the impact of ICT on the Nigerian economic growth and development. Get the complete work on Eduproject.ng
Education / Electoral Reforms And Democratic Sustainability In Nigeria (1999- 2017) by gomtas: 2:25pm On Dec 10, 2018
The golden pages of the New World Order bears that good governance and development are the desiderata of every state, which according to Western scholars can exclusively be achieved by upholding the tenets of democracy to which election remains it central nexus. As rightly noted by Gesset ''the health of any democracy, no matter its type or status, depends on a small technical detail: the conduct of elections. Everything else is secondary.'' (Animashaun, 2010:2).

Universally, elections are litmus tests of any democratic political system. In fact, democracies are all founded upon election, for it is the process that confers legitimacy upon power. Scholars are however quick to note that, not just elections but credible elections not only confers legitimacy on political leadership, it provides citizens with the freedom to choose their rulers and to decide on public policy and also crucial to the sustenance of democratic order. Under any democratic system, citizens who are legally qualified to exercise franchise are provided with opportunity to choose political alternatives and to make decisions that expresses their preferences. In a multi-party dispensation, this choice is made out of the several parties and candidates competing in the electoral market. To get the complete work, click on Uniprojectmaterials
Investment / Causes, Challenges And Solution To Corruption In Nigeria (quantitative Analysis) by gomtas: 1:04pm On Dec 10, 2018
Corruption is now a plague affecting Nigeria; it increases in accordance to the growth of the nation. There have been so many fight and demonstration to eradicate corruption in Nigeria but it looks as if the more protest Nigerian makes the more the level of corruption continue to increase in Nigeria; the major causes of corruption in Nigeria could be as a result of low standard of living in Nigeria; the level of greed among the people of Nigeria also have significant effect on the level of corruption in Nigeria.

Corruption could be the major cause of crises in Nigeria; such crises include terrorist attacks (Boko haram); most of these terrorist are from a very poor background; you imagine a poor man being offered a huge amount of money to drop an explosive in a particular area of Nigeria; such a man cannot resist such offer. The destruction of infrastructures by the terrorist attacks increases the level of poverty in Nigeria; take for instance the attack on churches and other business area of Kaduna in the month of june 2012; properties were destroyed, families were homeless; it became difficult for them to afford one meal a day. Another major cause of corruption in Nigeria is greed among the people of Nigeria; everybody dreams of a good and healthy life; you know you can only enjoy such luxury when you are well to do; this have a negative effect on the mindset of most people especially those in the federal government parastatals of Nigeria. Education / Teenage Pregnancy And How It Affects The Educational Development Of Our Teenager by gomtas: 2:18pm On Dec 06, 2018
Baldwin (1950) viewed teenage stage, as a period where reactivation of the `sexual drives that has been inactive during the latency period. He said teenagers are on the boundary between childhood and adulthood and they are faced with the choice of a whole way of life in terms of their job, their ethics and so forth. He further said that to find this in the face of many alternative roles, individuals must decide what they want to do and whether they are able to do it, they must take responsibility for decisions that may shape the rest of their life or destroy it. And to take this independent step, persons need a real sense of identity of their own worth as individuals and their esteem and he said our culture does not make it easy for our teenagers to take this step in life.

Watson and Lindgren (1979) gave the definition of a teenager simply as the period or stage of development that separates childhood from adulthood. They said it is also difficult to indicate the limits of a teenager; at what point does it begins and what point does it end, they said the characteristics of a teenager first shows themselves about 10, 11, or 12 years of age with the subtle changes In behaviour and appearance, then it becomes most obvious at puberty with the start of the menstrual cycle in girls. “For now, we have started to discuss. We are yet to reach any concrete decision. Once we have more information, we will make ourselves available to the press.

“The union will reconvene very soon to continue negotiations,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting, held at the instance of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, was to find lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the university lecturers.

Politics / Buruji Kashamu Bags Ogun PDP Guber Ticket by gomtas: 11:27am On Nov 19, 2018
Buruji Kashamu, Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District at the National Assembly has been unveiled by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Candidate in Ogun State 2019 gubernatorial election.

Senator Kashamu replaced Adeleke Shittu, who won the PDP primary election conducted by Bayo Dayo-faction in Ogun State.

It was learnt that Shittu whose name was pasted alongside other governorship candidates of 38 political parties by the INEC, “voluntarily withdrew” from the race for Kashamu.

The other faction of PDP headed by Sikirullahi Ogundele had equally presented Hon Oladipopu Adebutu as the party’s governorship candidate, but the electoral umpire accepted the list submitted by Dayo faction.

A subsisting Court judgement had ordered INEC to recognize Bayo Dayo-faction as the authentic PDP in Ogun State, an order the National Leadership of PDP kicked against.

Politics / Why Efcc Could Not Arrest Oshiomhole by gomtas: 10:57am On Nov 19, 2018
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said there could be “chaos and turmoil” if it proceeds to arrest Adams Oshiomhole, the All Progressives Congress Party National chairman.

According to Vanguard Newspaper, this was contained in an 11-paragraphed affidavit deposed to by one of its staff, Mr. Yusuf Musa, who told the court that EFCC conducts investigations “professionally and discreetly” before the arrest and prosecution of indicted persons.

The affidavit was against the backdrop of a suit filed before the court in Edo State by Bishop Osadolor Ochei, urging the court to declare that EFCC has a statutory duty to investigate different petitions that contained allegations of financial recklessness against Oshiomhole.

The applicant, Bishop Ochei alleged Oshiomholes’ properties scattered in United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States of America far exceed his income.

He also alleged before the court that Oshiomhole built a sprawling mansion worth more than N10 billion in his home town, Iyamho, while in office.

He prayed the court to order EFCC to arrest, investigate and prosecute the former Edo State Governor.

Meanwhile, EFCC, in a preliminary objection by its team of lawyers, led by the Head of its Legal and Prosecutions Department, Mr. G. K. Latona, aside challenging the locus standi of the applicant to file the action, said it had discretion on how to use its available manpower to carry out investigations into petitions submitted to it.

In a written address in support of the objection, EFCC said granting an order for Oshiomhole’s arrest and prosecution as prayed for in the suit could occasion “chaos and tumult” in the polity.

“It is inimical to the tenor and tenets of a democratic society for an agency, such as the first respondent, to be directed or compelled to discharge its functions in a particular way or manner, a fortiori the first respondent cannot be directed or compelled to carry out investigations or prosecution as dictated by the applicant or anyone.

“We urge the court to dismiss the applicant’s application, same being unmeritorious and lacking in merit,” said EFCC.

Business / N30,000 Minimum Wage: We Can’t Pay – Governors Insist by gomtas: 12:27pm On Nov 15, 2018
The Nigerian governors under the umbrella of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, has again insisted that paying N30,000 as minimum wage is not feasible.

The governors warned the N30,000 minimum wage could lead to reduction of workforce as only Lagos State has the capability to pay.

The Tripartite Committee on review of Minimum wage headed by Amal Pepple had submitted the Report to President Buhari for onward forwarding as Bill to the National Assembly.

However, according to Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information, the President is yet to fully study the Tripartite recommendation which proposed N30,000 as minimum wage.

The governors made the submission after an emergency meeting on Wednesday, November 14, asking the Federal Government to accede to the review of the national revenue allocation formula.
