Comrade Oshiomhole wants INEC to prosecute ex-President Jonathan on vote buying

National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday insisted that former President Goodluck Jonathan, introduced and perfected vote-buying syndrome into Nigerian politics, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to prosecute him for electoral crime.

Comrade Oshiomhole in a statement by its Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Mr. Simon Ebegbulem, wondered why the former president resorted to name calling instead of addressing issues raised by APC National Chairman.

While noting that it is unfortunate that the former president rather than own up and apologize to the nation for his crime if he still retain little remnant of conscience after a disastrous presidency, the statement said among others, “A quick fact-check will disclose that Jonathan invented vote-buying as was witnessed in 2015, in Edo State as well as other states of the nation when he injected billions of naira desperately buying votes to ensure he got a futile second chance as President. Out of desperation Jonathan injected over N5 billion through PDP leaders with a view to forcefully influencing Edo electorate into voting PDP. This was why the PDP was able to corner two senatorial seats in the state and got a majority of the House of Representatives’ seats against the wish of the electorate in Edo State.

“At press time, PDP leaders in Edo are currently in court over the funds the ex-president deployed to buy votes in the state. If he had worked hard even for his constituents in the South-South as President, he would not have had any cause to voyage into vote-buying. What transpired served as a deadly behaviour modification for innocent voters and skewed their consciousness to the awareness they could now make money before voting for candidates.

“INEC as the electoral umpire should move to prosecute Jonathan for being a harbinger of vote-buying. At press time, Jonathan’s cronies are either on the run or singing in different courtrooms on how they converted funds meant for purchase of arms and ammunition in the fight against insurgency to buy votes for the ex-president.

Today, some of the ill-fated underhand strategies Jonathan deployed to win elections are no longer secrets. The humongous amounts – the Dasuki cash, Diezani loot, et cetera, that the EFCC has uncovered in connection with funding the 2015 presidential election and buying votes are now well known.

“It is worth recalling here that in its 16 years in power, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, betrayed considerable hope. Instead of strengthening democracy and promoting good governance, the party was bedeviled by indiscipline and a compelling failure to exercise power to the benefit of Nigerians. The PDP had with a strange consistency violated the constitutional primacy of free and fair elections as the only way of choosing a leader.

“The administration of Jonathan did not deviate from the flawed vision or governance impunities of the PDP. Vote-buying is a sad product of PDP’s uninspiring history. It has no place in the patriotic vision of APC. So how can ex-President Jonathan have the moral grounds to attack the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, who is initiating transformational template of party governance for a popular party on a rescue mission.

With Buhari as APC Candidate, Our Victory is Assured - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said thursday that the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari, as the presumed presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reassured the opposition party of victory in the forthcoming general elections scheduled for the first quarter of next year.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, the party pointed out that Buhari’s fear to contest an elective presidential primary, for which he and a few APC leaders scared away other presidential contestants within their party with threats and high nomination form fees, had ended up ruining APC’s chance of fielding a good candidate for the election.
According to the opposition party, “Had President Buhari shed his desperation for power and allowed for internal democracy within the APC, particularly when it became clear that Nigerians across board have become averse to his re-election, due to his incompetence and insensitivity to the plight of the citizens, there would have been little hope for the APC.

“In muzzling contest in APC and gleefully emerging a sole candidate, President Buhari has merely won a pyrrhic victory; a General without a troop, with no capacity to face a general election, as the army of stakeholders and the masses that supported him in 2015 have since left him because of his unfulfilled promises and many failures in governance.

“Now that Mr. President has confirmed by his body language that he had no chance in a party he leads, how then can he stand a chance in the general elections, where millions of Nigerians, who are suffering untold hardship because of his misrule are only waiting to deal him a blow with their votes?”

PDP added, “Owing to Buhari’s incompetence, Nigerians’ purchasing power had become abysmally low, industries have wound up with attendant mass job losses; foreign direct investments have hit all time low, international partners have totally lost confidence in doing business with our compatriots, while the administration had no economic blueprint except borrowing”.

The party said since Buhari’s declaration to contest the 2019 election, true democrats and other well-meaning citizens had continued to leave the APC in droves to the repositioned PDP, which has now become the rallying platform for all Nigerians, in their collective quest for a new president among the array of very credible aspirants in the PDP.

The party said while it was settled that Buhari would be no match to any of its presidential aspirants, all indices point to his imminent defeat as the PDP remains committed to a credible, free, fair and transparent presidential primary, where Nigerians will freely participate to throw up that president that will lead the country to the path of unity, peace, good governance and economic prosperity for our people.

Masari: Katsina Will Deliver 2.5m Votes to Buhari

Meanwhile, Katsina State Governor, Alhaji Bello Masari, thursday in Abuja boasted that the state would deliver 2.5 million votes to Buhari at the 2019 presidential elections.

Masari who made the declaration while answering questions from journalists after meeting Buhari in the State House, said whereas Katsina State gave the president 1.5 million votes in 2015, it will top it with additional 1 million votes in 2019.

He said, “The people of Katsina are 100 per cent behind President Buhari and they will continue to support him even after the elections of 2019.

“We expect, based on figures coming out of the registered voters to give him nothing less than 70 to 80 per cent.

“We don’t have the figures now because they have completed additional registration.

“We are not talking about the last exercise that led to the election of 2015 and in 2015, he got almost 1.5 million votes from Katsina State.

“So, we expect that by 2019, we will be able to give him additional one million votes making it not less than 2.5 million votes.”

On the raging issue of direct and indirect primary in the APC, the governor dismissed the insinuation that it was a serious issue.

According to him, there is nothing contentious about it because whatever option adopted, whether direct, indirect primaries or consensus option, it is adequately provided for in the party’s constitution and hence, is a non-issue.

“It is not a hot cake. First of all, let me say from all the states that we have read and heard from, Lagos, Kano and Niger are the only states that have opted for direct primaries in a country of 36 states plus FCT,” he said, adding, “I think it shouldn’t be a contentious issue.”

Politics / Court Orders WAEC To Produce Adeleke’s Results In Five Days by grammys: 10:07am On Sep 14, 2018
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Bwari, Abuja, has ordered the West African Examination Council to produce the results recorded by the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in the May/June 1981 examinations conducted by the council.
The judge, Justice O. A Musa, ruling on an ex parte application by two plaintiffs, Mr. Wahab Raheem and Mr. Adam Habeeb, specifically ordered the examination body to produce in court the ledger containing results of Ademola and his mates with whom he sat for the examinations.

He also ordered that WAEC should swear an affidavit either denying or confirming that Adeleke, an incumbent senator representing Osun West Senatorial District in the Senate, sat for the Council’s May/June 1981 examinations conducted by the Council at Ede Muslim High School in Ede, Osun State.

The court ordered that WAEC should file the ledger and the verifying affidavits within five days of being served with the enrolled order.

Adeleke who is the candidate of the PDP in the governorship poll slated to hold on September 22, has been accused of forging his WAEC certificate.

But the Senator has since denied the allegation which he said was a lie being peddled by his political detractors.

The two plaintiffs, Raheem and Habeeb, had filed a suit seeking Adeleke’s disqualification as the PDP’s candidate for the Osun State governorship election.

They joined Adeleke, PDP and Independent National Electoral Commission as the first, second and the third defendants, respectively.

The had, on September 4, filed their ex parte application dated September 3, seeking, among other prayers, an interim injunction against the senator’s candidacy in the imminent governorship race.

On September 11, the plaintiffs’ counsel, B.J Komolafe, moved the ex parte application.

Ruling shortly after hearing the lawyer, the judge granted other prayers but refused the applicants’ prayer for restraining order.

The judge refused to grant an order restraining the INEC from recognising or giving effect to Adeleke’s nomination as PDP’s governorship candidate in the forthcoming poll slated to hold on September 22.

The judge also refused to grant another prayer by the applicants requesting an order directing or mandating Adeleke to show cause on why the court should not disqualify him from contesting the Osun State governorship election.

APC govt has turned Osun people to beggars –AD candidate

source:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4671/apc-govt-has-turned-osun-people-to-beggars-ad-candidate#latest

The governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy in Osun State, Mr Olugbenga Akintola, has said that civil servants, pensioners and other categories of people in the stage have been turned to beggars because of the policy of the present government.

Akintola said this in his acceptance speech at the beginning of his campaign in Osogbo on Thursday.

The governorship candidate said workers and pensioners were subjected to suffering for 34 months because of irregular payment of salaries and modulated salaries introduced by the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-led All Progressives Congress government.

Akintola said although the situation in the state was very bad, he was ready to rebuild the state into a prosperous state if voted into power.

He said the state needed to be rebuilt, stressing that his administration would make the people its focus of development in order to develop them and make their lives meaningful.

He said, “I accept the flag of our party at a moment when 4.2 million Osun people are in a battle of day-to-day survival. I accept the flag of our party when the debt of Osun State is more than N200bn. I accept the flag of our party when our hard-working citizens have been turned to beggars because of 34 months’ half salaries.

“I, therefore, stand here today humbled by the privilege given to me to bring atunse (rebuilding) to the repressive and oppressive conditions of Osun people. Whatever is good does not require to be rebuilt, my people, we need to rebuild Osun by putting people at the centre of development. Our rebuilding agenda puts Osun people at the centre of economic development and human capital investment.”

One of the leaders of the AD, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, said the administration of Aregbesola had inflicted so much pain and suffering on the people in the last eight years.

He called on the people of the state to stop the alleged transference of their collective wealth to Lagos by voting the AD candidate, who he said would revive the economy.

Atiku pledges to open national economy to generate income, employment

source:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4670/atiku-pledges-to-open-national-economy-to-generate-income-employment#latest

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday said he would open Nigeria’s economy to foreign investments to generate income and employment if given the mandate to rule in 2019.

Abubakar, who is one of the presidential aspirants on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, disclosed this while addressing the Kogi State leadership of the party and delegates at the party’s secretariat in Lokoja.

The former Vice President said he would open up the economy to attract foreign investors and turn the nation’s economy around to generate incomes and employment.

He said: “I will diversify the economy, open it up to provide safety for local and foreign investors.”

The presidential aspirant urged the National Assembly to act fast and ensure the use of card reader in the 2019 General Elections to ensure free and fair election.

He expressed confidence that the National Assembly would do the right thing by including it in the electoral law.

On insinuations of frosty relationship between him and his former boss, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Abubakar said there was no serious rift between them.

He said people magnified little things to suite their interest.

Politics / Lagos Assembly Breaks Silence On Plan To Impeach Governor Ambode by grammys: 9:57am On Sep 12, 2018
The Lagos State House of Assembly has reacted to reports making the rounds of plans to impeach the State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, over his decision to seek re-election.

The Chief Press Secretary to the speaker, Musibau Razak on Tuesday denied the claim.

He said there was no iota of truth in the speculation trending on social media that the Speaker was acting on instructions to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Ambode.

Razak emphasised that the relationship between the Governor and Speaker is “smooth and solid”.

“The news of impeachment is political. A lot of information is being circulated here and there but there is no iota of truth in the report.

“Claims to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Ambode are false as the relationship between the Governor and Speaker is smooth and solid,” Razak told Daily Trust.

This is coming at a time report emerged that Governor Ambode’s quest to be re-elected as Lagos State Governor for a second term may be facing major obstacle as over 50 council chairmen loyal to Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Ambode’s estranged godfather met and pledged their support for Jide Sanyaolu Sanwonolu, who is believed to be Tinubu’s preferred choice.

Politics / Saraki, Atiku, Kwankwaso Disagree Over Presidential Ticket by grammys: 9:01am On Sep 11, 2018
The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has set up a committee to liaise with all the presidential aspirants to discuss the possibility of having a consensus candidate.

The BoT also warned its members against campaigning for any of the aspirants in order not to polarise the party.

The BoT Chairman, Walid Jibrin, said these decisions were taken after the meeting of the board, which was held in Abuja on Sunday night.

He also said that the tenure of the current executive had been extended for another five years.

Jibrin, who spoke with journalists on the outcome of the meeting, said, “A committee has been set up to discuss with all presidential aspirants to come up with one of them as a consensus candidate.

“The meeting advised all members to always maintain their honour and integrity as the conscience of the party to remain neutral and never sponsor or lead aspirants to visits and rallies as was done during the last convention.”

On whether the party was showing preferential treatment to old members among the presidential aspirants, he said, “We have warned the party to manage the situation of new defectors to the party well and also consider the role played by old members.”

However, some presidential aspirants of the PDP, including ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, and a former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday disagreed on the presidential ticket of the party in the 2019 elections. At separate fora on Monday, the three of them expressed readiness to go for the primary.

It’s North-Central turn to lead Nigeria – Saraki

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Saraki, during a meeting with the Benue State Working Committee of the PDP in Makurdi, insisted that it was the turn of the North-Central zone to lead the country.

The President of the Senate also stated that his presidential aspiration was driven by an obsession for justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.

Saraki stated, “As a geopolitical zone, we have paid our dues. It is the turn of our zone to lead Nigeria to stability. We have gone through bad times. The nation has become crises-ridden; the killings are uncalled for and the Benue valley is the worst hit. There should be justice to every citizen, regardless of geographical location.

Democracy entails freedom or rights of the people. Our rights should not be imprisoned.”

According to him, Nigeria needs leaders who are capable of representing all interest groups, and not a section of the country.

“My presidential ambition is a collective decision borne out of a desire to salvage the disunity that we are witnessing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Saraki submitted his presidential nomination and expression of interest forms to the party in Abuja on Monday.

Saraki said that his antecedents stand him out among the other aspirants.

He said he had had the opportunity of serving as governor and that he is currently serving on the legislative side, stressing that it was important that the country had a president who could bring all parties on board.

We must ensure credible primaries – Senate President

On whether he can step down for a consensus candidate, he said, “I don’t think the consensus thing is the issue before us because we are trying to ensure that there is internal democracy in the system and very credible primaries.

“What is important is that at the end of the day, we have something that is rancour-free. What I can tell you is that we are working together because we are still part of one family.

“I believe at the end of the day, we will have a process that whoever emerges will be supported by all of us. So, there will be no need dividing ourselves.”

Atiku will win PDP ticket – Aide

Also, the spokesman for the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Mr Segun Sowunmi, said his principal was confident of emerging the PDP candidate.

Sowunmi told one of our correspondents on the telephone that since the PDP had not micro-zoned the Presidency to the North-Central, Atiku would not step down for anyone.

He said, “The business of zoning is a party matter, and the PDP, to the best of my knowledge, has not micro-zoned its Presidency. It was only zoned to the North.” Having said that, the former Vice-President has evolved beyond the candidacy of a tendency or even a zone.

“He is a pan-Nigeria candidate but we recognise that this country has become extremely divided and it takes a pan-Nigerian, who has a relationship with every part of this country to be able to bring the nation together. This is one of the many reasons he is needed. “

I’m the only aspirant that can defeat Buhari – Kwankwaso

Also, Kwankwaso, who spoke through his Principal Secretary, Binta Spikin, stated that only he could defeat President Muhammadu Buhari and as such would prefer to go for the primary rather than backing down for anybody.

According to Spikin, what is important is for the PDP to present a popular candidate who can beat Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

Reacting to the claim that it was the turn of the North-Central to lead the country, she stated, “No, we don’t agree and I don’t think we should agree. Why? It is because what we are looking at is that person who can deliver votes. And going by the happenings in Nigeria, Senator Kwankwaso is the only person who can beat President Muhammadu Buhari. That is if you are talking about mass followership.

“From whatever direction one is looking at it, the most interesting and obvious fact is, who can beat President Muhammadu Buhari in the next election, and that person is Senator Musa Rabi’u Kwankwaso.”

But asked whether Kwankwaso would reject consensus candidacy in a text message sent to her, Spikin said, “Senator Kwankwaso believes in the law and party supremacy, hence he will be part of anything that will contribute to the overall success of the party.”

But when contacted, the spokesman for a former governor of Kaduna State, who is also a PDP presidential aspirant, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said his principal would not comment on the matter.

Makarfi, a two-term senator, is among eleven other aspirants jostling for the Peoples Democratic Party’s ticket to unseat President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

“We will rather not comment on that. There is no comment from us. Thank you,” the spokesman said.

There is unease in Ekiti State over the approval and purchase of a 2018 Lexus LX 570 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) valued at N75 million for Governor Ayo Fayose as a “parting gift”.

The purchase is causing anxiety in the civil service as fear grips officers involved in the deal ahead of the change of government on October 16.

It was learnt that the vehicle was bought about a month ago but our reporter sighted the documents on the deal yesterday.

A civil servant, who spoke in confidence, described the deal as “strange, suspicious and unheard of” at a time government workers and retirees are owed salary arrears.

A memo for the purchase of the vehicle emanated from the Political and Economic Department of the Governor’s Office through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

The letter authorizing the purchase of the SUV was addressed to the SSG, Dr. Modupe Alade.

It was written by Mr. Bayo Opeyemi, the Executive Secretary/Director General, and was dated August 1.

The deal was alleged approved same day by Fayose with his signature on the document.

The memo reads: “Kindly refer to the request for the direct procurement of one unit of 2018 Lexus LX 570 (U.S Specs) as a parting gift for the governor by the Political and Economic Affairs Department of the Governor’s Office at Page 15.

“The invoice at page 18 has been reviewed by the state’s Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) from N68,000,000 (exclusive of tax) to N66,000,000. The inclusion of 13 per cent tax will bring the total cost to N75,862,068.96.

“Please, present for approval the direct procurement of one unit of 2018 Lexus LX (US Specs) as parting gift for the Governor a sum of N75,862,068.96.”

A Certificate of No Objection (CONO) for Contract Award for the procurement of the SUV was also issued by Ekiti State Bureau of Public Procurement, dated August 3.

A Certificate of Purchase (COP) was also issued.

A civil servant familiar with the deal said: “The question people should be asking is: why is the outgoing governor approving the parting gift for himself?

“It is strange in the system, unheard of; it is suspicious. It was supposed to be the decision of the government and not the decision of one man.

“It is not the outgoing governor that will determine what the state will give to him. There is more to it than meets the eye.

“The incoming government must get to the root of the matter and all those involved, whether civil servants or politicians, must be brought to book.”

Former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, slammed Fayose for allegedly buying the SUV as a parting gift.

He criticised the payment of N43 million severance package to himself and deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

Adeyeye also criticised the governor for alleged sale of government property and auction of government vehicles to cronies at “ridiculous prices”.

The former minister, who declared his intent yesterday to run for Ekiti South senatorial, said the governor’s latest action showed that he (Fayose) did not love the workers and masses as he used to claim.

He added that it was callous of the governor to buy a luxury vehicle for himself with the state fund when workers are owed between five and eight months’ salary arrears.

Adeyeye urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in the state to be more vigilant to prevent the state from being plundered by the outgoing administration.

He said: “I have always identified Fayose as a selfish person. He only thinks of himself. I have always maintained that the governor can’t be trusted.

“I know he will like to appropriate everything to himself. We learnt he has been selling state assets, like the Erunfun Land on Ijan road. That land was bought by Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1949 and he never appropriated it.

“We have had many governments in Ekiti: former Governors Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi never contemplated selling the land, but Fayose was planning to sell it to himself. Ekiti people won’t accept that.

“It was Fayemi who supposed to send him off, but due to selfishness, he (Fayose) decided to appropriate that to himself. That is not the trait of a good leader.

“For four years, Fayose didn’t do more than five projects and he claimed he has performed. He only touched two towns throughout the time. Schools, hospitals and roads have decayed under Fayose. No investments in Agriculture, road network, everything was neglected.

“Not even a single investment was witnessed in agriculture. So, that victory (last governorship poll) was a sound one for APC and Ekiti people.

“Fayose made several agreements with leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014 to win the governorship election. He never fulfilled any. He manipulated everything to suit himself in the PDP, despite the fact that I nearly won the governorship primary before I decided to defect to APC, just to defeat him at all cost.”

President Buhari’s integrity claim a fraud - Sule Lamido

source:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4306/president-buhari-s-integrity-claim-a-fraud-sule-lamido#latest

Former Jigawa State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party presidential aspirant, Sule Lamido, has dismissed the claim of integrity attributed to President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that before him, there were famed Nigerian leaders with integrity, which the president has never acknowledged.

Lamido said this when he spoke with newsmen on Thursday at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja after submitting his completed nomination and expression of interest forms.

He said: “There has been integrity before Buhari, there has been honesty in Nigeria before Buhari.

“Therefore, integrity is not an invention under the All Progressives Congress.

“Before Buhari will lead us, even our anthem says the labour of our heroes past.

“Before Buhari, we had (Obafemi) Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Aminu Kano, Tafawa Balewa, and these are people of integrity.

“And Buhari never for once paid tribute to them.

“Wherever he goes, he will destroy history, reinvent it, re-erect it and say he is the only person with integrity.

“Before Buhari, there has been integrity, honesty and he is going to leave all these behind.

“Beyond and after Buhari, there will be Nigeria.

“So, Buhari’s integrity is a fraud, is false.”

source:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4302/inec-registers-14-5m-new-voters-says-preparation-for-osun-poll-on-course#latest

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it has registered over 14.5 million new voters ahead of the 2019 general election.

The electoral body has also affirmed that preparations ahead of September 22, 2018, governorship poll in Osun State are on course.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this thursday in Abuja at a regular meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where he revealed that the commission was working on a multi-faceted approach to curb vote-buying and other malpractices during the election.

“On the preparation for the Osun State governorship election, all processes and activities are going according to our timetable and schedule of activities released almost a year ago.

“The last major activity was the presentation of the voters’ register to each of the 48 political parties fielding candidates in the election, giving detailed information of the distribution of the 1.6 million registered voters by local government areas, wards and polling units.

“We are working on a multi-faceted approach to the menace of vote-buying and other sundry electoral malpractices. We will introduce changes to the election-day administration of our polling units, in addition to the electronic tracking of our sensitive materials.”

The INE chairman stressed further that the commission had concluded the current phase of the nationwide CVR exercise last week, which lasted for 16 months, from April 27, 2017 to August 31, 2018.

Yakubu added “at the end of the exercise, a total of 14,551,482 new voters were registered. If this figure is added to the existing register of 69,720,350 voters, it means that the nation now has a voter population of 84,271,832.

“Although the figure may drop slightly after we run the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), the current figure represents about 21% increase on the existing register. On this note, let me also appeal to Nigerians to seize the opportunity of the ongoing nationwide display of the particulars of new voters for claims and objections as required by law.

“By doing so, citizens will be helping the commission to further clean up the register and purge it of all ineligible registrants as required by Section 12 of the Electoral Act.”

The chairman stressed that in addition to fresh registration, the commission was also processing 769,917 requests for intra and inter-State transfers as well as 1,178,793 requests for replacement of lost, damaged or cards with misspelt names or incorrect personal details of voters as required by law.

“This means that the Commission has to print a total of 16,500,192 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and make them available for collection by citizens ahead of the 2019 general elections. Already, the Commission has printed the PVCs for those registered in 2017 and delivered them to States for collection”, he added,

“I can also confirm that the PVCs for 2.7 million voters registered in the first quarter of 2018 have been printed and will be delivered to the states next week. We wish to reassure Nigerians that every registered voter will have his or her PVC available for collection before the general election.”

The chairman assured Nigerians that collection of PVCs would continue until one week to the 2019 general election.

Teenagers sell stolen laptop for N2,000 in Lagos

source:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4222/teenagers-sell-stolen-laptop-for-n2-000-in-lagos#latest

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two teenagers for allegedly breaking into a shop on Jakande Estate, in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State, and stealing a laptop.

The police also arrested two others – 27-year-old Adejagun Babatunde and 20-year-old Lawal Wasiu – for allegedly receiving the stolen laptop from the teenage burglars.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, on Wednesday said the case was worrisome because minors were involved.

Imohimi said, “The command’s operatives attached to the Ejigbo Police Division on September 2, 2018, arrested two teenagers (names withheld), aged 13 and 14, who specialised in breaking into people’s shops.

“Luck ran out on them when they burgled a shop at Block 397, Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, and made away with one generator valued at N15,000; one HP laptop, valued at N90,000; one amplifier, valued at N40,000; and one CD mixer, valued at N150,000.

“The police have arrested their adult collaborators, 27-year-old Adejagun Babatunde and 20-year-old Lawal Wasiu. The two adults bought the stolen HP laptop for N2,000 only. The adult suspects will have their day in court, while the child offenders will be handed over to the gender section for appropriate action.”

One of the teenage burglars, said he took the laptop inside an opened shop, adding that he was accompanied by his friend to a complex at Ejigbo where they were paid N2,000 for the laptop.

The second teenage suspect said he was only involved in selling the laptop.

The buyer of the laptop, Babatunde, said he got to know the boys through Wasiu.

He said, “Wasiu came to me that the two children wanted to sell a laptop. They told me that they wanted to sell the laptop because they were hungry, adding that the laptop belonged to their brother, who was no longer a deejay.”

Wasiu said, “The two boys said they were hungry and that I should give them money. I told them that I did not have money and I directed them to Babatunde.”

In a related development, operatives attached to the Ejigbo Police Station arrested one Ikechukwu Kalu for allegedly stealing a pumping machine on Egbe Road.

The CP said the suspect would equally be charged to court.

19-yr-old 'One-Chance' Robber Jumps Into Lagoon To Evade Arrest

source:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4225/19-yr-old-one-chance-robber-jumps-into-lagoon-to-evade-arrest#latest

Men of the Rapid Response Unit of the Lagos State Police Command have paraded three 'one-chance' robbers, who were operating on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Disclosing this in a statement on the official Facebook page of the unit on Wednesday, the Police said the robbers were arrested, while attempting to flee from the policemen on foot.

According to the release, “the robbers, John Akinyemi, 27; Paul Oliseh, 37 and Amos Williams, 12, were arrested on Monday afternoon on the Third Mainland Bridge after a chase by the Rapid Response Squad patrol team monitoring Iyana-Oworo.

“One of the robbers, who was later identified as Junior, 19, was reportedly hit by speeding vehicles twice on the bridge before jumping off into the Lagoon.”

Narrating how they operate on the route, the leader of the gang, John Akinyemi, confessed that the gang had been involved in robbery for more than three months.

“There were four of us. I was in charge of calling the team to work. It was our first trip for the day. We took four passengers in Estate Bus Stop in Alapere. They were going to Oshodi. We dispossessed them and dropped them off before Iyana-Oworo one after the other.

"We took their phones and money. We have been doing this for more than three months. We sell the mobile phones and jewelry, and we share the money,” he said.

Semiu Oluwaseun, one of the victims, who alerted the RSS officers, claimed he was robbed of N500,000, as well as his phone and other valuables.

Another victim, who was robbed on Sunday, identified John Akinyemi as the driver of the bus he was robbed in. He noted that he was robbed on Sunday night and that the robbers took N150,000 from him before he was thrown out of the speeding bus.

The robbers were paraded by Imohimi Edgal, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, at the Command headquarters.

PDP commences distribution of 100,000 membership cards in Sokoto

SOURCE:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4156/pdp-commences-distribution-of-100-000-membership-cards-in-sokoto#latest

The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday commenced the distribution of 100,000 membership cards to members, vowing to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 governorship election in the state.

Addressing party chairmen of the 23 local government areas in Sokoto, the state PDP Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Milgoma, said the 100,000 cards would be distributed to all members in the state.

He said a four-man committee had been set up in each of the 23 local government areas of the state to ensure the smooth registration of all members.

Milgoma explained that both old PDP and new members were eligible to register in their wards, adding that all members would be treated equally without any discrimination.

“This is our first stakeholders meeting since Governor Aminu Tambuwal left APC to join PDP. We are all united and there is no discrimination and division whatsoever between old and new PDP members.

“We have set up a committee in each local government to ensure smooth distribution of the membership cards. Thus, we are ready to provide more membership cards as soon as these ones have finished,” he said.

He emphasised that the PDP would defeat the APC in the 2019 governorship elections in the state.

According to him, the APC-led federal government had failed to meet the yearning of Nigerians and would be voted out in 2019.

“We are resolute in our determination to defeat the APC in the 2019 governorship elections in the state and have no doubt we will achieve our aims.

“There is mass poverty in the country and the people are in dire need of change because the last three years have yielded nothing but suffering to the masses,” Milgoma added.

Also speaking, a former Commissioner for Rural Development in the state, Alhaji Mani Maishinko, said the APC had pauperised Nigerians because of bad policies and programmes.

He lamented that people were really suffering, while insecurity had worsened in the country in the last three years.

“The last three years have shown that APC cannot take Nigeria to the next level. So, the only way out is for people to obtain their permanent voter cards and vote for PDP in the forthcoming elections,”

Kebbi APC endorses President Buhari, Governor Bagudu for re-election

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Kebbi State chapter, has agreed to adopt consensus for other aspirants in the forthcoming general election as they ‘solidly’ endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for second terms in office, respectively.

Deputy Leader of the Senate, Sen. Bala Na’Allah, who confirmed this, on Wednesday, after an emergency stakeholders’ meeting, in Birnin-Kebbi, disclosed that the party has unanimously adopted consensus selection of candidates for the 2019 elections.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Na’Allah said: “Sequel to the directive by the national secretariat of the APC that we should go back to our States and hold a state Executive Committee meeting to decide on the faith of our party primaries on either consensus or primaries, we have decided to do consensus.

“Where the consensus fails, we will do indirect primary election. But the seat of the President and state Governor, we unanimously endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Atiku Bagudu, that is our decision,” he said.

Also speaking, Chairman of APC in the state, Alhaji Bala Kangiwa, described Kebbi State as one big APC family living in peace and unity.

“We are committed to safeguarding the peace and unity in our family,” he said.

The state’s Public Relations Officer of the party, Alhaji Sani Dododo, said that rice farmers nationwide under Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu had resolved to buy nomination form for President Muhammadu Buhari.

2019: Plateau APC adopts indirect primaries

SOURCE:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4150/2019-plateau-apc-adopts-indirect-primaries#latest

The Plateau chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted the indirect method of primaries in choosing its candidates for elective positions in the 2019 elections.

The party unanimously adopted the position at an expanded stakeholders meeting on Wednesday in Jos.

Mr Johnclerk Dabwan, former Speaker of the Plateau House of Assembly, moved the motion for the adoption of the indirect primaries and was seconded by Mr Azi Pate, the party chairman in Jos East Local Government.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the party had given the state chapters the privilege of deciding how to arrive at its candidates.

Among the options are direct and indirect primaries, as well as consensual agreement.

Dabwan, while arguing for indirect primaries, cited security challenge in the state as his major reason.

“Having gone through the provisions of our party’s constitution and the resolution of its National Executive Council where it suggested direct, indirect or consensus method in conducting our primaries, I want to move that Plateau should adopt indirect primaries.

“The security challenges currently bedeviling us will make direct primaries very difficult and cumbersome,” he said.

Stakeholders at the meeting, through a voice vote, adopted the motion after Mr Latep Dabang, the state party chairman, put the question to vote.

Among senior party members at the meeting were Prof. Sonni Tyoden, Deputy governor, his immediate predecessor, Ignatius Longjan, as well as former and serving lawmakers in the state.

I DESERVE TO BE NOMINATED FOR BALLON D'OR

SOURCE:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/4143/i-deserve-to-be-nominated-for-ballon-dor-griezman#latest

France star Antoine Griezmann insists he deserves to be on the podium for this year’s Ballon d’Or after winning the World Cup and major silverware with Atletico Madrid.

Griezmann came third in 2016 in the voting behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the most prestigious individual award in football, despite not winning anything.

That year was agonising for the forward as he lost the Euro 2016 final with France and the Champions League final with Atletico.

But this season fortune has smiled on Griezmann, who starred in France’s triumphant World Cup winning campaign in Russia after an impressive year at Atletico, who won the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup.

“Comparing 2016 and this year, for me I have to be in the top three,” the 27-year-old told French sports daily L’Equipe.

“In 2016, I lost two finals and was in the top three. This time I have won three finals.”

Asked if not winning it would be unfair, Griezmann replied: “Not unfair, but I would wonder what more I could do. I have won three trophies, stood out at decisive moments, but it is not me who votes.”

Ronaldo and Messi have dominated the Ballon d’Or over the last decade and the Portuguese superstar will be a contender again this year after winning the Champions League with Real Madrid.

But Griezmann, who rejected a move to join Messi at Barcelona in the close season, admits ending their stranglehold over the award would be special.

“I think about it, especially the closer I get to it. The Ballon d’Or is a prestigious award, and it is the highest you can go as a player. There are trophies in your league, in the World Cup, the Euro, but it’s not the same,” he said.

However, there are signs that Griezmann’s glorious 2018 on the field might not be enough.

UEFA gave their award for the best player of last season to Luka Modric, skipper of the Croatia side that reached the World Cup final and a Champions League winner with Real.

And Griezmann was omitted, along with the rest of his France team-mates, from the final three nominees for FIFA’s player of the year award.

The finalists for that prize are Modric, Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah, the same three who made up the podium for UEFA’s award.

Asked about the FIFA snub, Griezmann replied that “it’s bizarre, and a shame. It is a trophy given out by FIFA, isn’t it?

“And the World Cup is organised by FIFA, right? We win the World Cup, and there is no French player there. That is their choice but it is surprising that there is no world champion.”

The Ballon d’Or award was run jointly by FIFA and magazine France Football until the end of 2016, since when world football’s governing body have reverted to giving out their own prize.

While a panel of supporters, national team captains, coaches and journalists vote for the FIFA award, only journalists vote for the Ballon d’Or.

OsunDecides: APC kicks off campaign in Ile-Ie

The outgoing governor, Rauf Aregbesola, led the campaign team to the palace of Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to receive royal blessings for the party’s candidate, Gboyega Oyetola.

The monarch, while blessing Mr Oyetola prayed for success of his quest and assured Mr Aregbesola’s legacy could help his electoral victory.

Speaking at the palace, Mr Oyetola said serving with Mr Aregbesola is more than enough training for him on how to govern the state.

“I know where we started. I know where we are. I am not a candidate who needs any tutorial to lead Osun. As an apprentice, eight years are more than enough training period for anyone. I am the most suitable person to continue from where we are,” the APC candidate said.

Addressing the crowd after leaving the palace, Mr Aregbesola said their coming to Ife was for two reasons – to seek Ooni’s blessings and seek the votes of Ife people.

“Ooni has blessed us. He pointed out that today, Tuesday signifies victory, meaning Oyetola will record victory. God is with us. He has given us the wisdom and strength to take Osun to the promised land.

“After our initial foundation that must be laid by a maverick like me, now that we have laid a solid foundation, there is need for somebody with gentle disposition like Oyetola to continue with the construction of the super structure.”

He pleaded with the residents to “vote for the progress of the state by way of continuity.”

He also said party members who have defected may still consider returning and that their spaces are still open.

Party leaders who addressed the crowd include: APC Chairman in Osun State, Gboyega Famoodun and the state’s Deputy Governor, Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, amongst others.

Professor kills wife, body stuffed in suitcase

A university professor has been arrested on suspicion of killing his wife after police found a body stuffed into a suitcase in his office, the latest grisly murder to transfix the crowded city of Hong Kong.

Officers discovered the body of a woman, wearing only her underwear and with electric wire around her neck, hidden in a suitcase inside a large wooden box in 53-year-old Cheung Kie-chung’s office at the University of Hong Kong.

The associate professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering had reported his wife missing on Monday 20 August, claiming she had not returned home following an argument.

Police said they became suspicious of Cheung after CCTV footage failed to show his wife leaving their home, while Cheung was also seen moving a large wooden box out of the premises.

On Tuesday afternoon police searched Cheung’s office, a five minute drive from the dormitory on the leafy campus where he lives with his wife and children.

“There was blood seeping out from the suitcase and it stank,” superintendent Law Kwok-hoi told reporters Tuesday night.

He said the victim might have been strangled, but the identity and the cause of death still needed to be confirmed by a post-mortem examination.

He added that Cheung told investigators he had a dispute with his wife on the night she disappeared over the toilet hygiene of their elder daughter.

Cheung is also the warden of the dormitory where his family lives and a member of the university’s governing council.

The latest murder comes as another Hong Kong academic is currently on trial for using a yoga ball filled with carbon monoxide to kill his wife and daughter.

The southern Chinese city, famed for its cramped housing but low crime rate, is occasionally rocked by high-profile murders that dominate media coverage and often involve gruesome attempts to hide or dispose of bodies.

In 2016, British banker Rurik Jutting was jailed for life for the murder of two Indonesian women in Hong Kong, stuffing one of their bodies in a suitcase and placing it on his balcony.

The year before, a local man was jailed for chopping up his parents and storing their body parts in a freezer.

Crime / Police Arrest 57 Suspected Homosexuals In Lagos by grammys: 10:00am On Aug 28, 2018
No fewer than 57 suspected gays have been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly gathering to conduct initiation rites in the state.

The initiation reportedly took place around 1am on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at a hotel in the Egbeda area of the state.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said the arrest was based on intel from men of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps.

Imohimi said on receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officers of the Shasha and Idimu divisions, were ordered to investigate the claim that some youths would be initiated into a “gay/homosexual club.”

He said, “The DPOs stormed the venue around 2am. On arrival, young men, numbering over 80, were met in a hall taking different types of drinks, including Tramadol and Shisha laced with substances suspected to be marijuana. As soon as they sighted the police, they ran in different directions. However, the team arrested 57 of them.

“There is something very worrisome about the arrest. Although being a gay contravenes Section 1, sub-section 1 of Same Sex Marriage Act of 2014, it is a threat to the moral fabric of our society. Even though homosexualism is an offence, arranging elaborate initiation rites for young men as homosexuals is, to say the least, very worrisome.”

The arrested suspects, however, denied the allegation, saying they were not gays, They added that the police did not give them a chance to defend themselves.

One of the suspects, Smart Joel, said he was at the hotel to give himself a treat on his birthday.

The 25-year-old Imo State undergraduate claimed that he had a girlfriend.

He said, “I am not a member of any gay club; I have a girlfriend. I have sex with ladies.

“I had visited the venue two years ago for a wedding ceremony and I liked the environment. Saturday was my birthday. I went there to have some drinks when I noticed that a party was going on in the event hall. Around 2am, I noticed that some guys were running. I had to run because in Nigeria, when you see people running, you have to also run for your life.

“I noticed that the policemen had invaded the premises of the hotel. They gathered everyone from the bar, club and hall. I got to know that it was a birthday party that was going on there. The police did not listen to anyone.”

Another suspect, Obialo James, 20, who claimed to be HIV positive, said the police did not show any concern for his medical condition.

The Imo State indigene said, “I am not a gay; I went there to perform because I am a dancer. Is being a dancer a crime? They have been beating me so that I can say I am a gay. Even when I told them that I was HIV positive, they did not care. I contracted the disease from my mother during pregnancy. Instead, they locked me up. I have not taken my drugs today.”

Another suspect, Odika Emmanuel, 25, said he did not understand why the police separated the ladies from the men during the arrest.

“It was yesterday (Sunday) when we were writing our statement that the police told us our offences. Is that how the police operate in Lagos? I was there for a birthday party. There were a lot of ladies there,” he added.

Meanwhile, family members of one of the arrested suspects, Amaechi Edeh, said the suspect was not a gay.

Amaechi’s younger brother, Ejike, said the suspect had three girlfriends.

He said, “My brother is not such a person. We live together; he has three girlfriends that I know.”

Another 78-year-old family member, who identified himself as Ejeh, said Amaechi could never be gay.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police said all the 57 suspects were being investigated and would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

Shehu Abdullahi out of Seychelles clash over injury

Bursaspor right back Abdullahi Shehu has explained that he was left out of the Super Eagles squad to face Seychelles in next month’s AFCON qualifier because he is still recuperating from an injury.

Shehu who played only one game at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia however did not reveal the nature of the injury.

He is yet to feature for his Turkish Super Lig side Bursaspor this season.

The 25 year old also wished the team well ahead of their trip to Victoria where they will face Seychelles on the 7th of September.

“Ruled out due to injury, I appreciate the coach and backroom staff for the communication,” Shehu tweeted on Saturday.

“I have resumed training, but the time is short to be available against Seychelles. Congratulations to all invited players, great squad. Wishing the team success! #SoarSuperEagles.#

Nigeria are currently third in Group E without a point after the first round of matches. They are behind leaders Libya and South Africa who occupy second place. Seychelles are at the bottom of the group.

Similarly, Levante’s Moses Simon was also left out of the squad for the game as he is still recuperating from a muscle injury.
