Health / Surviving Ramadan Healthy by Grandcereals: 10:45am On May 08, 2020
Ramadan is here again, kudos to Mothers and everyone out there, doing your best to ensure your families have the best nutrition options during this fasting period while working on increasing spiritual connection with the supreme being.

What you eat, or choose not to eat, during Ramadan makes a big difference to your energy levels. Your spiritual and physical well-being is critical here. After fasting all day, there is often a temptation to over-eat and load up on sugary beverages during Iftar and Suhoor, but you could be doing yourself a disservice if they are unhealthy.

Iftar and Suhoor meals should be well balanced and contain items from each food nutrient group, such as Grain Cereals (Fibre), vegetables, Protein (such as Chicken, Fish, Meat), dairy products and fruit.

Fasting in the month of Ramadan can improve one’s health, but only if healthy. Carefully pay attention to the selection of food items you consume during Suhoor and Iftar. It is also important that the food you consume keeps you hydrated. Ensure you drink as much water or fruit juices as possible between Iftar and bedtime to avoid dehydration.

During Ramadan break your fast with excellent light foods like cereals (Grand Cornflakes) and low fat-milk that keep you active and gives you instant energy to make you feel rejuvenated after the long-hours of fasting. Grand Cornflakes helps your body feel satisfied.
Eggs, Chicken, and fish are high in protein and other nutrients. They not only help you to stay full for longer but can be made in several ways to suit your tastes. They are excellent for Suhoor (Morning Food).

A healthy family is a happy family, ensure you stay on the healthier side of life. The best decision you can make this Ramadan is to keep your body healthy. Arguably, most people are desirous of staying healthy and keeping their hearts in good condition but not everyone understands what to do not to stress the heart! Grand Pure Soya Oil is 100% made from Soybeans which is Cholesterol Free and contains Omega 6 to prevent heart attack and deaths from coronary heart diseases, it doesn’t congeal or sleep, doesn’t foam or fume. Grand Pure Soya Oil doesn’t add any artificial taste to your meals.

Agriculture / How To Overcome Heat Stress In Poultry Production by Grandcereals: 2:03am On May 05, 2019
One of the keys to the success of poultry production and farming is the provision of a clean environment regardless of the weather condition.

Heat stress in poultry birds is a situation whereby birds have difficulty balancing body heat production. Which can be overcome by doing the following.

Sufficient ventilation, air and cooling systems should be provided to facilitate air circulation so that they wont be panting.

Shades from tall trees and veranda will help to reduce direct exposure to sun.

Ensure proper litter management to reduce heat emanating from buildup litter.

Clean, fresh, cool drinking water should be provided at all times

Additional drinkers should be provided where necessary.

Be very vigilant in order to identify abnormal discomfort in your poultry birds early.

Water tank should be placed under a shade away from direct sunlight perhaps automatic water supply is better.

Perhaps reduce body heat by putting fewer birds in each pen/cage.

Keep your birds calm, don’t allow other pets like dogs, cats etc to frighten or disturb them.

Cleaning their pen or turning their litters should be done in the morning to reduce heat stress.

Some signs of Heat Stress includes
wings spreading , stupor, staggers, terminal convulsions, slowness, cannibalism, Light body weight, rough skin, Increased output of urine, increase thirsty, uneven growth and egg weight decreases in some cases.

Should you notice any of this, call your vet and if you need the most profitable feed for your Poultry, Fish, Pig and Ruminants. Call Vital Feed on 070 0000 0999 or send a mail to info@grandcereals.com

Health / Breast Cancer Awareness Month by Grandcereals: 5:20pm On Oct 12, 2018
Breast Cancer Signs and Symptoms
Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel is an important part of breast health. Finding breast cancer as early as possible gives you a better chance of successful treatment. Sometimes a breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes under the arm or around the collar bone and cause a lump or swelling there, even before the original tumor in the breast is large enough to be felt. But knowing what to look for does not take the place of having regular mammograms (screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms)  and other screening tests. Screening tests can help find breast cancer in its early stages, before any symptoms appear.

symptoms of breast cancer include:
Skin changes, such as swelling, redness, or other visible differences in one or both breasts
An increase in size or change in shape of the breast(s)
Changes in the appearance of one or both nipples
Nipple discharge other than breast milk
General pain in/on any part of the breast
Lumps or nodes felt on or inside of the breast

is breast cancer only for ladies?
Breast cancer in men is rare, but it does happen. Less than 1% of all breast cancers occur in men. For men, the lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.

When to see a doctor
Don’t panic or be fearful when you notice breast changes. However, be proactive about your health and visit a doctor to determine the cause of any breast symptoms. Each of the six changes listed above can warrant a visit to the doctor, especially if these changes do not seem to relate to one of the following:
the menstrual cycle.
Injury.
previous illness, such as a breast infection.

Health / World Heart Day 2018 by Grandcereals: 3:12pm On Sep 26, 2018
World Heart Day takes place on 29th September every year. The day is part of an international campaign to spread awareness about cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke prevention. This year’s global campaign theme is MY HEART, YOUR HEART. It’s about saying to ourselves, the people we care about and individuals all around the world, “What can I do right now to look after MY HEART… and YOUR HEART?”

High blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels, lack of exercise and unhealthy diets are all factors which can trigger heart diseases and increase the risk of premature death. World Heart Day was conceived to instill the message that if heart problems can be identified early enough, many heart problems can be prevented.

The main purpose of the campaign is to improve health nationally by encouraging positive lifestyle changes, enlightening and educating people on ways to keep their hearts healthy at all time. One major aspect which causes heart problems is carrying excess weight on the body. On World Heart Day, events like walks, runs, concert and sport activities take place globally to promote healthy lifestyles and healthy hearts.

Pets / World Rabies Day 2018 by Grandcereals: 11:51am On Sep 26, 2018
Rabies is a viral disease that causes swelling in the brain of warm blooded mammals. It is most frequently transmitted by a bite, and can cross between species; such as from dog to human. It is one of the most dreaded diseases in the world. It causes the most human deaths of all zoonotic diseases (diseases which can be spread between animals and humans). This year marks the twelfth year of bringing the global community together to fight against Rabies. The theme for this year is “Rabies: Share the message, Save a life”.

This campaign had since emphasized on three important points: Educate people on what Rabies is (education); Create awareness on how to prevent/reject rabies (Eliminate); and end Rabies by 2030 (Eradicate).

Tips to reduce the risks of contracting rabies:

Vaccinate your pets against rabies

Do not handle wild or stray animals to avoid being bitten Contact your vet doctor when your dog starts acting strangely.

Always seek medical attention if you’ve been bitten by a dog.

If a strange or wild animal bites your pet, contact your veterinarian immediately to determine if your pet needs medical intervention. The best way to avoid rabies is to vaccinate your pet.

Key facts from WHO

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable viral disease which occurs in more than 150 countries and territories.

Dogs are the main source of human rabies’ deaths, contributing up to 99% of all rabies transmissions to humans in countries where dogs have the disease.

Rabies elimination is feasible through vaccination of dogs and prevention of dog bites. 40% of people bitten by suspect rabid animals are children under 15 years of age.

Immediate, thorough wound washing with soap and water after contact with a suspect rabid animal is crucial and can save lives.

WHO, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) have established a global “United Against Rabies” collaboration to provide a common strategy to achieve “Zero human rabies deaths by 2030”.

Business / How To Get Ready For Back-to-school by Grandcereals: 10:36am On Sep 06, 2018
Back-to-school period can be very stressful depending on how you planned it. There are several things to do like shopping, schedules to keep, people to meet and appointments to make. Not to mention your child’s nerves about or resistance to the big day. We are in information age, technology has made things easy, here are some tips that will better prepare both you and your children for the inevitable disarray – and beat the fall blues while you’re at it.
PREPARE THE CALENDAR
Preparing a healthy meal is one thing and getting the children into routine is another thing, but parents need to settle into the new schedules as well. A helpful tip is to prepare the calendar as early as possible and hang it in a common area. That way, everyone in the house gets used to the idea that there are a million things to do, just around the corner! It will leave you feeling accomplished and ready.
VISIT THE SCHOOL WITH YOUR KIDS BEFORE RESUMPTION TO GET THEM FAMILIARIZED
Every child’s biggest fear is getting lost on the first day (Resumption day) – especially for kids entering a new level or school. A great way to ease their concerns is to take them there ahead of time. Walk the halls and get familiar with the settings. This will help both of you feel more prepared for a big day. This is particularly useful if your child already has their schedule, as they can find their locker and classroom colors changes.
SAVE MONEY WITHOUT LOSING TIME
Look to shopping / e-commerce website such as “UACNMARKET” to help you find the things you need at a reasonable price and reasonable time. Finding coupons and running store to store can be a real headache, but getting technology to get the work done for you is a major perk of today’s digital-age. Never underestimate the power of technology, it can really lighten the load so you have the time and energy to focus on your children’s back-to-school nerves!
RE-ESTABLISH ROUTINE
This is a must to do. During the long holidays there are journeys, special sleep-overs and everything else that gets in the way of keeping a routine. When the fall rolls around, kids struggle to settle into proper eat-times, play time and bed-times. Starting this ahead of time will mean that by the time school starts, they will have normalized the routine. Of course, the struggle will still be there, but hopefully the worst of it will be over and done with.
GET THEM EXCITED FOR SCHOOL
Encourage them with books that comprise of school themes, school environments, coloring, school settlings and friends at school. This will remind them that going to school is expected and at the same time remind them that learning can be fun. Emphasize school days as mini adventures and point out that some of their favourite characters are school-kids as well.

START A NEW TRADITION
Someone in the house has the back-to-school blues? It could be a child, or a parent, or both. To beat the blues, create a new tradition that will begin when school does, and this will give everyone something exciting to look forward to. Be it picking out a breakfast cereals as gift for teacher or something more regular like special Monday breakfasts cereals (Grand Cornflakes) just be sure it’s something the family can do together.
CONTINUITY MATTERS
After resumption, carefully follow up with them to ensure some basic things are right and ensure to choose clothing the night before school day, designate one place for clothes to keep house clean, keep shoes organized, make sure that your kids complete their homework before they go to bed, keep backpacks fully stocked so that they aren’t starve in school and organize your own items.

Agriculture / Best Feeding Practice For Cat Fish. by Grandcereals: 4:01pm On Aug 02, 2018
Feeding in catfish farming is the most important task in fish farming towards a profitable catfish production. This is because, during feeding, the farmer get to observe the general welfare and growth of the fish, identifying the ones that might be ill or not growing properly, since their response to feeding might differ.

The feeding behavior of the fish is often a clue to the health of the fish and its response to the conditions and environment of the pond. Good experience in the behavior of fish should enable the person to properly observe them during feeding and also give the right feedback.

Regarding catfish feeding practices, there is no one standard practice that should apply to all farms. Every farm is peculiar and feeding practices should be based on the situation of the farm. Base on the size of the pond, you might want to feed the fish by training them to converge at a spot for a small pond (Spot Feeding) and at multiple spots for a larger pond, or you can choose to spread out the feed (Disperse Feeding) to reach every area of the pond for the fish to eat at whatever spot they choose.

No matter the feeding style you choose to employ, it is appropriate to use what will be suitable for your pond size and fish age. Experts would recommend the use of floating pelletised feed for profitable return, where a portion is used to groom the fish. Most farmers prefer using floating feed as it helps the farmer check the fish’s activity and their general condition as it reduces wastage of feed and many other benefits.

Other fish feeding practices to note are highlighted below:
The usual practice is to feed the fish is twice daily. More than twice might lead to water pollution among others.

Avoid underfeeding the fish or skipping daily meals in order to avoid cannibalism, poor growth.

Always use good quality feed. Don’t choose a brand of feed because it is cheaper. Go for a fish feed that is highly nutritious and best suits your farming style.

If you notice any sign of disease and an increased death rate of the fish, you should quickly consult your Veterinary Doctor to check the exact situation that had led to such circumstance

For good profit for your business, avoid wasting feed via over feeding.
