The Arewa Youth for Peace and Security (AYPS) has advised the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) to focus on helping to stop the killings, rather than getting involved in partisan politics.

The National President of the group, Salisu Magaji, gave the advice in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.

Magaji expressed concern over a statement credited to Garus Galolo, the Benue State Chairman of the association, asking Senate President Bukola Saraki to resign from office or he would be forced to do so.

He noted that Saraki was elected by senators and only two-thirds of the entire lawmakers could remove him from office as stipulated by law.

“They should restrict themselves to the constitution of Miyetti Allah. Saraki is a Nigerian and he remains the President of the Nigerian Senate as elected by the senators.”

Magaji wondered if the association was now a political group to be talking about forcing Saraki out of office.

“Do they not know he was elected as the Senate President by senators and that only two thirds of the entire senators can remove him from office as stipulated by the constitution of Nigeria?

“We would like to think that this chairman of Miyetti Allah in Benue State does not understand the rudiments and essence of politics.

“So, let him concentrate on how to stop the killings in Benue State and desist henceforth, from talking about politics because Miyetti Allah is not a political group.

“He should desist from heating up an already fragile polity. Our laws are clear on how to remove a sitting Senate President.

“This attempt at resorting to unconstitutional means, as advocated in some quarters, does not mean well for our democracy and ultimately, the stability of our nation,” Magaji said.

Meanwhile, Baba Uthman Ngelzarma, the National Secretary of MACBAN, had in a statement urged the public to disregard Garus Galolo’s position, saying that he spoke in his personal capacity and had no mandate to speak on behalf of the association.

Ngelzarma, in the statement, said: “Miyetti Allah is a non-partisan association with no interest in the political terrain and we couldn’t meddle into the affairs of political actors, thereby compounding our already obvious challenges.

“I, therefore, urge all and sundry to disregard this statement. This statement is not from MACBAN and should be disregarded in its entirety.

“We take exception to this statement and Garos Gololo is entirely on his own and will be sanctioned accordingly. We cannot afford to add up to the many challenges we are confronted with.

“I’m therefore appealing to the general public to disregard this statement as it is coming from someone who doesn’t have the mandate of the association to speak on its behalf.”

Three people were burnt to death and five others injured in an accident on the Zariagi-Lokoja highway in Kogi, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Bisi Kazeem, who confirmed the development, said the incident occurred early on Thursday.

He explained that nine people and three vehicles–Toyota Carina, Scania Truck and Mack Tanker–were involved in the accident.

Kazeem said that one person escaped the accident, which he blamed on over-speeding unhurt.

“The deceased were burnt alongside the vehicles, while the injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja.”

He said that an FRSC rescue team, which arrived at the scene after the accident had embarked on removing the wreckage from the road.

The Okene-Lokoja-Abuja highway is classified among the deadliest road corridors in Nigeria.

No fewer than 17 million Africans left the continent in 2017 in search of greener pastures, a new report by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has said.

The ‘Economic Development in Africa’ report also said 5.5 million people moved to Africa from other continents while some 19 million international migrants moved within Africa.

“Overall, some 19 million international migrants moved within Africa, and 17 million Africans left the continent during last year. The continent was also the destination for about 5.5 million people from outside,”

the report found.

It said the large-scale migration of people within Africa tended to boost growth and lifted the continent’s whole economy, urging the world to dispel misconceptions and “harmful narratives” targeting migration.

The report also said cross-border movement offered “a chance for a better life, with the social and economic benefits extending to both source and destination countries, as well as future generations”.

It has just been reported that Nollywood actress Aisha Abimbola, popularly known as Omoge Campus, is dead. She died on Tuesday, May 15, but family members are yet to reveal the cause of her death.

The sudden death of the actress was announced by her colleague, Bisola Badmus, on Instagram. Badmus wrote, “Unquestionably God RIP Omoge Campus.”

On Wednesday too, May 16, she shared the picture of the deceased, writing, “Gone so soon RIP omogecampus.”

The police in Gombe on Tuesday charged 50-year-old Samaila Zakari at a magistrates’ court with raping and impregnating his 15-year-old daughter.

In the First Information Report, the police said Zakari of Deba town in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, committed the acts on May 2 and May 8.

The prosecution said that about 10pm on the mentioned dates, the accused took his biological daughter to his matrimonial room and had canal knowledge of her without her consent.

The prosecution further stated that the girl was currently carrying a two-months-old pregnancy for her father.

The prosecution said the accused committed incest and rape by his action contrary to section 390 and 282 of the Penal Code.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges before the magistrate, Mr. Dorabo Sikam.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Baba Shekari, asked for the adjournment of the case to enable the police to complete their investigation.

The magistrate adjourned the case until May 21 and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody.

Governor Nasir Ahmad El Rufai was in Birnin Gwari Local Government today, to condole with the residents over the unfortunate killings in the area by armed bandits.

Malam El Rufai visited the Emir’s palace and Gwaska village where scores were killed in an attack on Saturday.

The spate of insecurity in Birnin Gwari has been a source of great worry to Governor El Rufai. In his first week in office as Governor, He conducted an aerial surveillance of the Birnin Gwari axis back in 2015.

The Kaduna State Security Council led by Governor El Rufai also held a meeting in Birnin Gwari in 2016 in its bid to end rural banditry in the Birnin Gwari area. The Administration is working closely with the Federal Government and Security Agencies, to flush out armed bandits and other criminal elements in the state.

This engagement has yielded positive results as President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of a permanent batallion of the Nigerian Army in the Birnin Gwari area. The Inspector General of Police has already announced the creation of the Birnin Gwari Police Area Command and two new Divisional Police Headquarters.
