Happy New Year! I am glad you made it into 2016. It’s just six days into the new year and I have been fortunate to listen to two different versions of discussions on New Year Resolutions. Well, I did an article on New Year Resolutions last year, you can read it here.

Moving on to the subject of discussion without further ‘paparazzi’, here are reasons you should not date a guy who reads.

Romance / 10 Places To Meet The Hottest Chic In Lagos by HelenaMag: 9:57pm On Dec 06, 2015
So a friend of mine conjured up this article, it's quiet funny, one of such a kind I have never written about. I want you to air your opinions, are these places is a "yay" or a "nay"? She included "Churches"....Lord have mercy....lol

Here it goes:

I recently read an exciting article someone put up about the best places to snag a rich husband in Lagos and I thought it would be nice to give tips on where to spot the coolest girls as well. A male friend once asked ‘’Is getting a girl with some finesse too much for a brother to ask?” the answer is NO, you just haven’t been going to the right places. If you are really tired of rolling with the razz bunch and you are craving an ajebota girl (an elegant and classy lady), you are one lucky young man, as I’m about to do a classic review of the coolest spots to meet the hottest chics in Lagos.

Eko Hotel:
It is one of Lagos’ most prestigious hotel. The five star hotel which is located in Victoria Island features about seven exquisite restaurants and bar. Several events, concerts, movie premieres and exhibitions are often held at EXPO Hall and Convention Centre of Eko Hotel. These concerts are usually attended by several girls, just remember to take your wallet because you are gonna be needing it.

You remember my previous post right? Where I told you I have been chosen as a Chief Bridesmaid. Thinking back to it, I was not really chosen, it has always been my entitlement and I have looked forward to this time for the past twenty something years of my life.
I told you of so many responsibilities I had on my shoulders and how I was to respond to the beck and call of the bride.

Well, if you hadn’t read Memoirs of a Chief Bridesmaid – Part 1, then you should read it here.

I just organised one the the most important events for the bride last Saturday – the bridal shower and I am going to be telling you about it.

Celebrities / Synopsis From Ben Carson: Let’s Get Some Inspiration From His Story #inspiration by HelenaMag: 11:57am On Oct 30, 2015
You may probably have heard about the Ben Carson story. I met him in 2011 and was overwhelmed by the amount of crowd he pulled from far and near, people who came to hear him speak. It is amazing to see how a man who his classmates thought little of from the beginning turned out to be great. Not just the rich-type of greatness but someone who has saved lives and restored joy to many homes.

Get Inspired

From the class dummy to the “student with the highest academic achievement” on to become one of the world’s renowned Neurosurgeon.

During his days as the resident doctor at Johns Hopkins, there was an emergency and no doctor to attend to the patient, Ben was reluctant to operate because it was illegal for him to do so without an attending physician present.

He did anyway because a life was at stake, he did well and the patient survived. That marked the beginning of greater things to come for him.

It’s scary, you do not think you can but then God gives the chance to prove your worth to the world and let them see what you are capable of.

Ben did not become a Neurosurgeon by sulking on what people thought of him; instead he studied hard and worked towards achieving his dreams. There is nothing impossible; all you need is the determination to succeed.

Second chances

At a point in Ben’s life, he missed his way, he got mixed up with bad group of friends and threatened his mum with a hammer. But a near life changing occurrence jolted him back on the right path – when Ben stabbed his friend below the belly button but his belt saved him by breaking the knife instead. Now that’s a second chance. If he had succeeded in stabbing his friend, continue reading http://www.helenamag.com/2015/10/29/synopsis-from-ben-carson-lets-get-some-inspiration-from-his-story-inspirationthursday/

Romance / Love Vs Marriage (religion & Compatibility) – Part 1 by HelenaMag: 5:23pm On Oct 26, 2015
Love transcends all things, but then, is love enough for a marriage? For most, having a different religion, even denomination, is a big red flag to start a relationship let alone marriage.

In a case where a husband has a different religious view from the wife, it is believed that one partner will be forced to join the other religion – usually the wife. Later in the marriage, both partners will come to realize there is no common prayer/religious ground, interests will clash, they will both start questioning each other’s belief and try to win/pray the other is converted.

Questions: What would it feel like if you cherish Christmas Eve in church and you are there alone without your spouse? Or cannot attend Church marriage seminars/dinners with your spouse? What happens to your children? Whose religion would they adopt? Or will they have to shuffle between?

Many go into marriage (even when they have different religious beliefs) with strong conviction that it is no big deal not until issues surrounding their religious views start arising in the home.

Fact is, if you both love each other enough to want to be married, then one person must be willing to forgo his/her religion for the other, so there can be harmony. If you think I speak trash, then maybe I truly do, but if only you are able to answer those questions above.........

Jobs/Vacancies / Job Seekers And GNLD by HelenaMag: 4:02pm On Oct 26, 2015
If you never had a job waiting for you right after graduation and you spent couple of months seeking a job (or you are presently still seeking) especially online, then GNLD will not be a new acronym, though you may have never thought to find out the full meaning.

A lot of graduates get their first few job interview invites from a GNLD company asking for the services of a “Business Development Executive” or some other general related job roles. Most graduates who have attended these interviews tag these companies’ scammers and fraudsters due to their mode of business operation.

Graduates have narrated stories of interviews which they often tag unfortunate. Let’s take a quick look at what GNLD stands for.

Fashion / The World Most Expensive Handbag: THE BIRKIN by HelenaMag: 10:49am On Oct 23, 2015
The large highly priced tote was created and named after the English born actress and singer Jane Birkin who spent many years in France. On a flight she shared with the CEO of Hermes, Jean Louis Dumas from Paris to London, she complained about her struggle to find a functional leather bag suitable for the weekend and how she opted for her straw basket. With this in mind, Dumas took three years to design a bag that reflected Jane’s taste and style.

This encounter spurred the birth of the iconic Birkin Bag.

Hello Nairalanders,

Here is one thoughtful write up from helenamag.com

When life gets tough, remember that there are millions out there who would be lucky to be in your position…

When you worry about buying new clothes for a celebration, remember millions out there wear rags and has never being invited to a celebration…

When you worry about buying the latest shoes and clothes, remember millions are out there worrying if they would live through a sickness…

When you worry if you should have bread or rice for breakfast, remember millions don’t have a choice, they don’t have any food…

When you worry about moving to a bigger apartment, remember millions do not have a home, they have never had one…

When you cry so much over a heartbreak and it wrenches you apart, remember millions loose families and loved ones, who they will never see again…

When life gets tough, when you worry over trivial things, you should remember you are in a better position than millions of people around the world…

When life gets tough, when you worry, think of this happy face that still smiles despite how tough life has been and he should have worried…

Romance / Gender Inequalities In Relationships (women Issues) by HelenaMag: 4:26pm On Oct 19, 2015
Women, we can be very sweet, loving caring and adorable, if you know the right buttons to press. Like I treated earlier -“Gender Inequalities in a relationships (Men Issues)”, I’m going to be treating this topic objectively. In the men issues, I accused some men of being dominant and overly controlling, I have gotten some feedback that women bring these upon themselves, allowing men to treat them so and it has been regarded as part of norms right from time.

Well ladies, here is the gist, if you don’t want to be a submissive or better yet his lapdog, you need to start acting otherwise, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying do not respect your man and pamper him, but you need to set somethings straight from the start, no pretentious acceptance of his nasty and unruly behavior towards you or others (a man who truly loves you will not behave nasty and unruly in the first place, except he has some real issues I’m going to leave for the psychologists to name, because I’m not one).

But before you set things right ladies, you need to check yourself for some top red flags and nasty attitudes some women portray, if you want a man to treat you better, you need to get rid of attributes like these ones below:

Romance / Gender Inequality In Relationships (men Issues) by HelenaMag: 2:31pm On Oct 19, 2015
It shakes me that though we are in the 21st century, many men still think like our forefathers, where a woman is seen as a submissive and they dominant. Many have justified their actions with the verse of the bible that says “wives submit to your husband…”

Most men are always trying to dominate the relationship – their words should not be questioned and his woman is not to interfere in his personal life, for him cheating on her is a normal thing for a man to do and an apology should do, they justify by saying “all men are born promiscuous.” But if his woman dares to be just a friend with another man, she is seen as flirtatious, he would let hell loose and tell her to break off any contact with her male friends.

Brides to be, so let’s talk about this and if you are married well, let me ask, would you have done these?

Wedding ceremonies today have gone beyond the regular exchange of vows and gathering of family, friends and well wishers to wine, dine and bid the newlyweds farewell to the beginning of a new life together.

There are so many trends that have been incorporated into wedding ceremonies, starting fromthe theme of the wedding, decoration and surprises usually in store for the audience (I heard of a wedding where the bride and groom came in from an underground at the reception instead of the normal aisle).

Every bride wants a unique act that will make her wedding not-soon-to-be-forgotten and go viral on the social media.

Few brides have long abandoned the thought and symbolic representation of a white dress to walk down the aisle. Bridesmaid now wear black, I see brides on sneakers, coloured dresses and jumpsuits. Here are some pictures:

Career / Women In Power by HelenaMag: 10:05am On Oct 15, 2015
It’s no news women are highly sensitive species and though we are different in our own way, we have some traits we portray while in a managerial position. Gone are the days when a man is the only one seen legible to handle a managerial position due to the long instilled archaic beliefs our forefathers almost made permanent, but it’s good news we are past that era now.

With a lot of women empowerment programmes and campaigns, we are now handling positions we were not privileged to in the earlier era.

But then, there is also the problem of some traits getting in the way of handling situations that arise while being in the managerial position – relationships with subordinates.

Romance / Best Way To Break Up: Should You Have A Date Before The Call Off? by HelenaMag: 9:58am On Oct 15, 2015
I was discussing with a friend some weeks back and she was not sure how to end a relationship she had gotten over months before now, she said things like “he’s a nice guy”, “I don’t want to hurt him”, “he should read the signs that things are not the way it used to be” and a couple of other things. Well some people are bad sign readers or they would just ignore the signs till you spell it out plainly. After coming to terms the best way was to talk about it with him, then she ended it with “maybe we should go see a movie first then we will talk about it after”, oh yeah, that’s where the idea of this particular topic came from.

I mean why should you gently rub a person’s back when you intend to shoot them, well maybe my comparison is quiet grave but then, it’s quite synonymous. That is just one of the most heart wrenching breakup acts, it’s like giving hope to a person then snatching it away.
