Another woman, who converted her hair to drug courier has been arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

It has now become a new trend in drug trafficking, especially among women. The suspect, Vivian Metu, 39, who fixed 1.500 kg of heroine in her hair was among the suspected four drug traffickers arrested recently by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Two hundred and thirty wraps of substances, which are cocaine, weighing 3.440 kg, were ingested by the three male suspects, including an undergraduate.

They are Ezeamama Celestine, 38, who ingested 91 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.470 kg, Obasi Stanley, 24, who swallowed 76 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.140 kg and Ozonwechukwu Chinedu, 37, who ingested 63 wraps of cocaine weighing 830 grammes.
Vivian was said to have prepared the heroin in three black parcels and fixed them on her hair. She was arrested during the screening of passengers on Ethiopian airline to Guangzhou, China.
The single mother, who is a 2006 graduate of Economics at the Lagos State University (LASU), said she wanted to raise some money for medical treatment.

“I know that my friends and relatives will be disappointed, but I needed money for my medical treatment abroad. I am an international trader but I am suffering from cancer,” she was quoted as telling the narcotic agents. Reacting to the new method of concealing hard drugs in the hair by women, the Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, said the discovery was a further proof that traffickers were running out of method of drug concealment.

“This is not the first time that drug traffickers will conceal drugs in hairs. They are definitely running out of tricks due to our counter efforts. This is good for the country, as drug traffickers and their sponsors shall not go unpunished,” the NDLEA boss vowed.

Ugochukwu, an undergraduate studying in Italy, was nabbed during screening of passengers on Air France to Italy. He claimed to be a 300 level Agric engineering student at Padova University, Italy.
“I requested for financial assistance and I was told to smuggle drug and be paid 5,000 Euros. This is my first time and I agreed to smuggle drugs because of my education,” he said.

Celestine was arrested while he was trying to board an Iberia flight to Madrid, Spain, where he lived for over seven years. He told security men it was hardship that led him into drug trafficking.
“I have lived in Madrid since 2003 and I worked to sustain myself but when I lost my job in September, 2009 and things became tough for me. I ingested 91 wraps and was to be paid 2,500 Euros,” he said.

Chinedu said he went into the illegal business to settle his bills and to maintain his family in Nigeria. The suspect, who was trading in Alaba International Market, Lagos, before he travels to Brazil, said he got involved in narcotic to make ends meet. “I was in Brazil for over four years. I was to be paid N200, 000 for ingesting 63 wraps of cocaine,” he told his investigators.

Police arrest suspected fake insecticide manufacturers

Written by Olalekan Olabulo

Police, in Lagos State, have arrested three members of a gang that have, in the past past few years, been flooding Lagos and its neighbouring states with fake and adulterated insecticide products .

The three members of the gang were at the weekend arrested by officers from Ilemba Hausa Divisional police station after a raid on the gang’s hideout at Adededola Street Sabo Oniba , Ajangbadi area of the state.

The gang members , Frank Uba , Atumodu Akubue and Christian Agwu have since confessed their involvement in the illicit act of economic sabotage and risk to the lives of several millions of Nigerians .

The gang was in the habit of buying empty cans of used insecticide products and refilling the cans with counterfeit chemical substances through the aid of a gas cylinder and other equipment.

The image maker in charge of the state police command, Mr. Frank Mba while parading the suspects on Monday stated that policemen from Ilemba Hausa police station, while acting on intelligence information, invaded the premises , where the counterfeit products were being manufactured .

Mba further stated that equipments and other accessories being used by the gang including gas cylinders , empty cans of Raid Kill It , Baygon , Rambo Mobil and other insecticides and Easy On liquid spray starch were recovered from the criminal hideout .

Frank Uba, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune confessed to have actively participated in the illicit act but claimed that he was introduced into the “ business “by Otumodu, a friend of his.

The 25-year-old suspect , who claimed to be second-hand cloth seller in Ajangbadi while admitting that he was quite aware of the implication of the deadly business stated that he had not been paid any money , since he joined the gang.

Uba informed the Nigerian Tribune that the gang bought its can from Hausa scavengers at the rate of N30 per can , while the cartons were sourced from different markets in the state .

Mba stated that the police, as part of the efforts to ensure a comprehensive investigation of the activities of the hoodlums, had sent samples of the counterfeit products to laboratories to ascertain the health implications of the product.
