Politics / Borno Residents Caution FG Against Dialogue With Boko Haram by HENRYVENRY: 11:47am On Jul 06, 2015 |
Some residents of Borno on Monday cautioned the Federal Government against rushing into dialogue with the Boko Haram insurgents as a way of ending their violent campaign. Those who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri on Monday advised government to concentrate on military action against the insurgents. Shieikh Musa Usman, a Maiduguri based Islamic scholar, advised government to equip the military with the necessary weapons to face the insurgents rather than considering dialogue option. Usman said, “We heard in the media that government was considering a dialogue option with the insurgents following the recent spate of attacks in the North east. “Why should government dialogue with individuals who are only interested in killing and maiming innocent people? “Is government saying that it cannot continue with the current anti insurgency war or what? “Why must we be talking about dialogue when our neighbours are already dislodging the insurgents from their countries?.” Usman urged government to copy from the recent actions of the Chadian and Nigerien Governments in dislodging the insurgents from their countries. Malam Goni Yahuza, another scholar said that negotiating with the insurgents was a sign of weakness. “I do not support the idea of dialogue with Boko Haram because there is nothing to dialogue about. “In the first place, I do not think that the group has something to talk about apart from violence”, Yahuza said. He added that government must deploy all resources available in ending the insurgency within a reasonable time. “I believe that the Nigerian military has all its takes to crush the insurgents, what they need is proper motivation for the task. “Government must strive hard to ensure that it puts an end to the insurgency in a short while,” Yahuza said. Alhaji Mohammed Mala, a businessman, commended the gallant efforts of the Nigeria military in fighting insurgents and urged them to do more. http://www.punchng.com/news/borno-residents-caution-fg-against-dialogue-with-boko-haram/ |

Politics / Obama’s Grandmother To Cook For President On Kenya Trip by HENRYVENRY: 3:06pm On Jul 03, 2015 |
President Barack Obama’s Kenyan grandmother, known as Mama Sarah, vowed Friday to cook a traditional meal for her grandson when he visits the East African nation, the birthplace of his father, later this month. “With regards to what food I will prepare for Barack on his visit, I will prepare all the traditional food available,” she said, speaking her Luo language through a translator on a visit to Nairobi. She tempted him with the offer of dishes including fish, chicken and maize porridge. “It does not matter whether Barack is a senator or a president,” she added. “He will have what I have prepared for him.” Mama Sarah was the third wife of US president’s paternal grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama, and lives in the small village of Kogelo in western Kenya which is home to a number of the president’s relatives. She said she had asked him to travel to Kogelo “to pay respect to his father’s grave”, but it was not clear if Obama was scheduled to travel outside the capital Nairobi. Obama’s late father was born in Kogelo and grew up there before travelling abroad to study, where he met Obama’s American mother in Hawaii. Although Mama Sarah is not a blood relative, Obama calls her “granny” and has visited her in the past. It will be Obama’s fourth visit to Africa since becoming US president, but his first to Kenya since taking office in 2009. A presidential visit to Kenya had been put on ice while President Uhuru Kenyatta faced charges of crimes against humanity for his role in 2007-2008 post-election violence. The International CriminalCourt has since suspended that prosecution, citing a lack of evidence and Kenya’s failure to cooperate. After Kenya, Obama then travels on to neighbouring Ethiopia, where he will become the first sitting American leader to visit. Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa also hosts the headquarters of the African Union, the 54-nation continental bloc. Africa’s second most populous nation held a vote in May that was described by many independent observers as flawed. Ethiopia and Kenya have both been on the frontline of the fight against Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-allied militia Shebab, and have been important security partners to Washington. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/obamas-grandmother-to-cook-for-president-on-kenya-trip/#sthash.j7dXzGoK.dpuf |

Politics / Edo Idps To Undergo Vocational Assessment – NABTEB by HENRYVENRY: 2:52pm On Jul 03, 2015 |
As part of efforts to empower Nigerians with technical skills for self-reliance, the National Business and Technical Examinations Board has said it would conduct certificate examinations in selected vocational areas for victims of the insurgency at an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, on completion of the acquisition of technical skills. There are over 900 internally displaced persons in the camp, managed by the International Christian Centre for Missions, a religious organisation, many of whom are children, while the insurgents continue to terrorise the North Eastern part of the country. The Deputy Director, Research and Quality Assurance of NABTEB, Mr. Olabode Ibidapo, who disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Benin, explained that the examination body had identified major areas of assessment through a committee set up by its management board to provide vocational assistance to the displaced persons. He said although the centre was not a formal school setup, the board could assist the IDPs with the examinations to test the skills they have acquired at the camp. Ibidapo said, “The Registrar/Chief Executive and management set up a small committee to visit the centre and tell management if there are ways NABTEB can collaborate with the IDP centre and other government organisations. We visited the centre on Friday, Saturday and on Monday. “We are aware that some of the IDPs must have had one academic pursuit or the other and there were those who were on an apprenticeship scheme. But because of the crisis, they hurriedly left. “So, we felt that there should be a way where NABTEB can come in and assist them. We saw that some of them had been acquiring skills, we saw equipment for garment making and craft practice.” He also noted that the committee had written its report bothering on areas of assistance as requested by the operators of the centre, which he said could not be made public because it was yet to be considered by the management of the board. http://www.punchng.com/news/edo-idps-to-undergo-vocational-assessment-nabteb/ |

Labour unions in Osun State have warned Governor Rauf Aregbesola to stop the plan to cut workers’ salaries by 50 per cent. The Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, who led other labour leaders to address journalists on the issue said on Friday that the decision would lead to an unimaginable chaos if it was not rescinded. The workers said although the state government had not written to inform them officially about the pay cut but they said failure to stop the plan would be met with a very stiff opposition from the workers. According to him, the state government has concluded plans to start paying workers the new rate starting from January 2015. Adekomi said pensioners were paid 50 per cent of their pensions for November 2014 whereas the state government promised to pay them one month during the last meeting. The NLC chairman stated that the salaries of the majority of the workers could not provide their basic needs, saying slashing the pay by 50 per cent would send many of them to their early graves. Adekomi said, “It’s sad to inform the public that government had resolved to cut the salaries of public servants in Osun State by 50 per cent from January 2015 and we want to unequivocally say that it is unacceptable to the entire workforce in the State of Osun. It is satanic, wicked and suicidal for any government to arrive at this position after he had failed in his constitutional responsibilities for the past eight months. ” Never will the workers accept this. The situation the state government found itself was a product of its systemic failure and any attempt to cut the salaries of workers in the state by one per cent will be vehemently resisted and will lead to unimaginable chaos.” Adekomi said the entire workforce in the state had been loyal to the Aregbesola administration but expressed surprise at the decision of the governor to slash the salaries of workers without negotiating with them on it. Asked if the workers would accept pruning of the workforce if the government decided to toe that line, the NLC chairman said the workers would insist on getting all their salaries and gratuities before such policy could be implemented. The press conference was punctuated with anti government songs by workers present calling the governor unprintable names. The NLC boss added, ” We want to place on record that as a direct result of the failure on the part of the government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility, we had lost a couple of workers in the cold hands of death, while the chairman of pensioners in the state, at a meeting with the government on Tuesday June 20, 2015, confirmed that 350 deaths were recorded among pensioners in the last four months.” The state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Wakeel Amuda, said workers should be ready to participate in a massive protest anytime soon if the government failed to rescind its decision of the pay cut. Efforts to get the reaction of the governor to the salary cut were unsuccessful. Telephone calls to the governor’s media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, were not answered. http://www.punchng.com/news/salary-cut-ii-lead-to-chaos-workers-tell-aregbesola/ |
