Crownvilla: Why not eat your cake and have it? I beleive mortgages are the next big money earner in Nigeria. How many Nigerians do you think, would jump at the chance of owning their own homes via a mortgage?

This market is an untapped goldmine!!!!!!!

Back to your question, why not invest in real estate via the Stock Exchange. Right now there is only one listed mortgage firm on the NSE, namely, Union Homes. Effectively, if you buy shares in Union Homes you are killing two birds with a stone, investing in real estate and shares in one fell swoop. grin grin grin

LBIC recently did a PP, I suspect their shares will head for the moon whenever they are listed. A few other mortgage firms are rumoured to be close to a PP or full listing on the NSE.

Really? So why hasn't the price of Union Homes reached the sun or mars yet?

democrats and republicans are totally different.their ideologies totally differ.just a few examples

democrats are pro gun control but republicans arent

democrats are pro-choice while republicans are pro-life

democrats believee the rich should pay their fair share in taxes.they believe a robust middle class is what drives the economy.republicans believe corporations and rich individuals should receive tax cuts that will encourage them to remain in business and create jobs

democrats are advocates of small government

democrats believe in more funds for domestic affairs as against defense while republicans believe the DOD should always get more than it demands for

democrats are for universal healthcare while republicans believe the rich should pay more so that the poor should have health insurance

democrats are for a more relaxed approach on immigration.republicans are for tightening of the borders.

democrats believe isreal should return to its pre-1967 borders, republicans insist isreal should retain the lands.

besides americans have other choices.there are other parties and there's independent candidacy

Really? When did democrats become advocates of small govt? Republicans are advocates for small govt.
Computers / Re: Why Are Apple Laptops So Freaking Expensive? Really? by hispy99(m): 7:40pm On Jun 30, 2012
ekt_bear:

Any HP that costs the same as a Mac will absolutely murder the Mac in terms of specs.

All I know is, Apple is a wonderful STOCK to own (and I say this as an Apple shareholder).

But for the same reason they are wonderful for investors, they are not a company a budget-conscious person should be looking to buy major hardware from.

Is it all about specs? Yes, any HP that costs the same as a MAC will absolutely murder a Mac in terms of specs, but what about reliability? I have used an HP(approx $1,600), DELL (company provided) and Toshiba (approx $1,600). I had actually sworn never to buy an HP after seeing the HP of a friend crash after about a month of use in 2002! However, the tech person at my place of work convinced me to buy one in 2006 as HP had improved. What happened? My HP fell apart after 3 months; the letters on the key board first started falling off, next it was the speakers that went out, then the screen began to separate from the main body (my wife bought a similar HP and the same thing happened to her own, apart from the letters falling off her keyboard). Then after about 18 months, the HP crashed (My wife's crashed after 2 years).

My Toshiba held up better than the HP; after about 6 months I noticed a green line that split my screen into 2. I got it fixed and then it was the battery. I changed it and then after 2 years, it began showing symptoms it was going to crash, which it did after another 3 months.

My DELL? Don't even get me started, I used it for 3 months and parked it under my office table. I haven't touched it since then.

I finally convinced myself to buy a a MacPro ($2,300) almost 3 years ago and guess what? I have not had ONE single problem. Not One. My wife got hers 2 years ago and guess what again? Not ONE single issue (apart from her machine being slow at some point, which was due to the fact that she was not updating her OS patches. Once we updated her Mac's OS, it worked just fine).

Needless to say, I am never going back to a HP or Toshiba. I would rather pay $2300 and use my laptop without issues for 3-4 years, than buy a HP for $1600 and change it every 18 months. The apple OS is also a lot stable than Windows. Does my Mac freeze sometimes? YES, but very infrequently. I can't remember the last time I had to reboot my Mac because it was not responding. I can't say that for any windows machine.

Winning elections is a popularity contest - that is why ACN is in charge in Lagos state. There was a golden opportunity to form an alliance with ACN and beat the PDP. As this country's political landscape is today, no party can displace the PDP -label them Poverty Dev Party if you like! MAYOWAAK:

Nigerians made a mistake not electing Buhari –El-Rufai

So, why do you think Jonathan lacks the political will to deal with them?

[Because they financed his election. But Buhari would have sorted that out. That is the first thing to do. Now, while you are paying the subsidy, even one quarter of what you are paying is a lot. General Buhari's administration would have ensured that within 12 months all the refineries are working at full capacity. His administration would have built the fourth refinery that will bring our domestic production to the point that we don't need to import a single drop of petrol. And once we can produce our petrol from our own crude oil, at out own cost, we can sell it at any price we like. That is what Buhari's government would have done. Nigerians made a very big mistake for not electing Buhari, and they are learning every day. Many people have told me that they voted for Jonathan and they are regretting it now.
There is no question of Buhari withdrawing subsidy because he has been Petroleum Minister, Chairman of Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) and so on. He built three out of the four refineries we have in this country. And he built that out of patriotism to ensure that we can produce domestically. So, the question of withdrawing subsidy would not even be on the table.

http://sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2012/jan/08/national-08-01-2012-005.html

Yes, Buhari would have set the price at 40kobo/liter sef. I wonder why Obasanjo, whom he served under did not do all these wonderful things?

GenBuhari:

You seem to have difficulty assimilating information.

First off, I said I doubted Abacha looted from Nigeria, doubted being the operative word here.

Do not forget he also had adventures in  Sierra Leone and Liberia and may well have been handsomely personally rewarded for his intervention in the diamond rich country.

I said that even though it was reported that money was recovered from foreign banks, allegedly from a bank account belonging to Abacha, Obasanjo has not been able to demonstrate to Nigeria where this recovered money is.

There can be a number of reasons for this;

1) There was not any money recovered and press were delibrately fed with information that Foreign bank refunded the money.

2) The money was planted in the foreign account by Babangida, to add credence to their plot to frame Abacha, hence reason why money was never paid into treasury coffers.

3)The money was recovered  but looted straight away

I think that scenario 1) is very probable as it is clear that Babangida /Obasanjo had set out to frame Abacha, otherwise they should not have had any reason  to probe the  one of the best performing  governments (economically) in nigeria's histo

Some questions for you to ponder:
Why was it that when Swiss legal team came to Nigeria to collect evidence about the money that Obasanjo was saying Abacha had looted , nobody turned up to meet them and they had to return to Switzerland after 2days of waiting.

So he used Nigeria's resources, money, army, navy, airforce to intervene in Sierra Leone and Liberia and yet he might have been personally handsomely rewarded? Did he use his own personal money to execute the war?

Obsasanjo should physically show you the dollars abi?  The swiss govt that said they returned money was speaking rubbish?  You were the one that planted the money on behalf of IBB?

You are a joke.

Career / Re: Does GPA Really Matter In The Labour Market? by hispy99(m): 4:10pm On Aug 11, 2011
Anvaller:

CGPA is nonsense.

It is only the case in Nigeria because there are few jobs. In developed countries where they have competent hands in all fields, do they ask CGPA?

I remember when I went for my Job interview, all they were concerned about is my work experience and my attitude to work. Can you work with a team, can you work in a multicultural environment? How well can you manage stress? How soon do you plan to marry? Can you work extra hours, Are you prepared to make international travels etc. These ppl were never concerned about my CGPA.

They really hate theory. Even those that are working in research laboratory dont ask CGPA, once you have a certificate showing that you are graduate of microbiology or whatever, then whatever mark you get does not matter, they assume that your knowledge is sufficient to perform in the laboratory. They believe in the quality of their education.

The Nigerian system never allow students with lower grades to believe in themselves which makes me sad. I say it again, in most cases, those grades does not really matter, it is a shame that we are making it a big deal in Nigeria. Let the government provide jobs and it will die naturally.

In some case, it matters. If not, there will be no need for folks to state their CGPA on their resumes.

I wont mention any names in this post but I'll offer some clarification. I'm a new grad with less than a year of experience so my knowledge of such economics may be basic to say the least, however, the disparities are as apparent as black and white.

The demeanor at which some responses are written can only come from the frustration of being underpaid and cheated out of rights, somehow you find solace in making excuses for the situation.

lastly, The intent of my original post was to ask the "question", "Why are professionals underpaid in nigeria?", Thanks to those who offered reasonable and direct "answers" to help me better understand the situation.

As for those that cannot answer simple question, pls return to primary school and gain basic "english comprehension"

my point is not too use the GEJ defense aka the "they are doing it too" defense. we shouldnt be bothered what other countries are paying thier professionals only if it is a source of positive influence to pay and treat our professionals right.
im saying this to say that those professionals that may be earning "peanuts" abroad are not the ones we should be trying to emulate if we want to move forward and be a financially empowered population.

I agree that we should aspire to earn better wages. However, given Nigeria's current situation, there's no way someone in Nigeria should expect on average to earn what his counterpart in the U.S earns. We are still a long way off before that will happen.
