Culture / Full History Of Benin Kingdom In Nigeria by Historianbeez: 3:02pm On May 25 |
Full History of Benin Kingdom In Nigeria The origins of the Benin Kingdom date back to the 11th century, although some scholars argue it could be earlier. According to oral tradition, the Edo people, who founded Benin, migrated from the southern part of Nigeria. By the 13th century, Benin had become a powerful state under the rule of the Ogiso dynasty. This period is notable for the establishment of a centralized political system and the development of the city of Edo, known today as Benin City. One striking aspect of Benin's history is its artistic achievements. I believe the kingdom's bronze and ivory works are among the most impressive in the world. These artifacts, created using sophisticated metalworking techniques, depict a wide range of subjects, from royal figures to scenes of everyday life. British explorers and traders, upon encountering these works in the late 19th century, were astounded by their complexity and beauty. Many of these artifacts now reside in museums around the world, serving as a testament to Benin's advanced craftsmanship. From a general point of view, the Benin Kingdom's political structure was equally remarkable. The Oba, or king, held supreme authority, supported by a council of chiefs and nobles. This hierarchical system ensured efficient governance and the maintenance of law and order. The kingdom's ability to manage its affairs effectively contributed to its longevity and prosperity. The 15th century marked a significant turning point for Benin. Under the rule of Oba Ewuare the Great, the kingdom expanded its territory through military conquests and strategic alliances. Ewuare is credited with fortifying the city with massive walls and moats, making it one of the most fortified cities of its time. These walls, described by early European visitors, were considered one of the world's greatest engineering feats. However, the arrival of Portuguese traders in the late 15th century introduced new dynamics to the kingdom. While it opened doors to European goods and firearms, it also set the stage for future conflicts and exploitation. The transatlantic slave trade, which began in the 16th century, had devastating effects on the region, including Benin. Despite these challenges, the kingdom managed to retain much of its autonomy and cultural identity................................ Do you find it interesting ?
