Sports / Neymar’s PSG Transfer Has Altered The Market Forever – Mourinho by hiybee(m): 1:28pm On Sep 06, 2017
ose Mourinho says Neymar’s move to Paris Saint-Germain has “changed everything” in the transfer market and believes Manchester United saved themselves tens of millions by getting their business done early.

PSG stunned the football world last month when they agreed to meet the Brazilian star’s £198m buyout clause to lure him from Barcelona, shattering the previous world record fee of £89.3m paid by Manchester United for Paul Pogba last summer.

Barcelona then followed that up by paying an initial fee of £97m to Borussia Dortmund to sign Ousmane Dembele, with a further £38m payable in add-ons, bring the total potential fee to £135m.

PSG then pulled off another major coup by signing Monaco’s teen sensation Kylian Mbappe on an initial season-long loan, with the Parisians set to make the transfer permanent next July for a fee understood to be worth £166m.
United were by no means conservative in their spending this summer as they splashed out £39.5m on Victor Lindelof (£30.7m up front with a further £8.8m in add-ons), £90m on Romelu Lukaku (£75m up front with a further £15m in add-ons) and £40m on Nemanja Matic, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic also re-signed on a free transfer.

That is a total spend of up to £169.5m but Mourinho believes United saved themselves a lot of money by completing their transfer business in July.

“I think we were very clever,” Mourinho told The Times. “We thought that something could happen that could change the market forever.

“Normally the last part of the market is less expensive, but this season, after Neymar, everything changed – and changed for the worse in terms of prices.

“I think Lukaku on August 31 would have been £150m. Matic would have been £60m or £70m. Neymar changed everything.

“If the biggest transfer in history had still been Paul Pogba, I think Philippe Coutinho would now be in Barcelona at £101m.

“People look at the £200m figure now. Now the players of £20m became £40m, the players of £40m became £60m and everything changed.

“Lukaku and Matic, now, would have cost us £200m in total. But because we did it in the first part of the summer, it was much less. I think we did well in financial terms and well in preparation terms, getting them before the season started. That is not crucial but it is important.”

Politics / Jonathan, CJN, Fayose, Bello, Okonjo-iweala, Ex-govs Under EFCC Probe by hiybee(m): 1:21pm On Sep 06, 2017
Names of some high profile individuals being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have been revealed.

The Punch, in a report, said a list it obtained contained the names of Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen; Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State; his predecessor and the current Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; and the immediate past Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The names are in the list of high-profile cases involving over 100 politically-exposed persons and top-ranking public officers still being investigated by the EFCC as of August 2017.

The list was recently sent by the EFCC to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Among other notable names on the list are the incumbent Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, and his predecessor, Captain Idris Wada.

Other former governors on the list include Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, who is now the Senate Minority Leader; Jonah Jang of Plateau State, the Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District; Senator Ali Modu Sherriff of Borno State, the sacked National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party; and Chief Lucky Igbinedion of Edo State.

There are also some ministers who served in the Jonathan administration, including the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke; AGF and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN); a Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed; Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, who is now the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District; and a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe.

Alison-Madueke’s husband’s name, Real Admiral Alison Madueke (retd), former presidential spokesmen, Dr. Reuben Abati and Dr. Doyin Okupe are also on the list.

Other prominent high-profile persons on the list are a former Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Dikko; a former acting Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus; Colonel Bello Fadile (rtd), who served under the immediate past National Security Adviser, retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki; the incoming Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdu Kafarati; and Justice Mohammed Tsamiya, who was recently retired compulsorily by the National Judicial Council.

Recall that Malami last week has announced plans to create a central body that will coordinate all criminal prosecutions in the country.

Malami revealed the policy reforms that will give his office more powers over EFCC.

The new body, to be inaugurated in October, will comprise a Coordinating Centre for all federal government criminal justice agencies as well as an investigation unit.

The minister said the coordinating centre has become “eminently necessary” because of lack of effective cooperation and collaboration among the criminal justice and security agencies in Nigeria.

He explained that the centre will “Promote and enhance quick and easy coordination of all federal criminal cases within the Federal Republic of Nigeria;

“Enable the Office of the HAGF to checkmate abuse and or proliferation of criminal cases in Nigeria;

“Facilitate centralization and easy access to information for a robust and effective criminal justice system in Nigeria;

“Address such anomalies that leads to consistent rejection of vital/relevant evidence in the course of prosecution;

*Whittle down of the probative value of such evidence owing to inappropriate investigation.”

The unit, he said, shall coordinate and form part of every investigation in Nigeria for a robust investigation and successful prosecution of such cases.

The core function/mandate of the Investigation Unit shall consist of the following:

“To advise every security agency carrying out investigation on the best lawful and admissible means of such investigation for effective prosecution thereafter;

“To actively form part of every sensitive and important investigation, as a synergy to successful investigation and prosecution of such cases;

“To ensure that every evidence obtained maintain the nature, value and form admissible in law court;

“To ensure that every investigation is comprehensibly and conclusively conducted;

Agencies that will come under the supervision of the coordinating centre include Department of State Services (DSS); Nigeria Police Force (NPF); the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC); the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Others are the National Agency for the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP); the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA); the Directorate Military Investigation (DMI); and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

At least 23 Nigerian universities have adopted the 120 cut-off mark recently introduced by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB.

The universities, mostly private, are among the 168 universities in Nigeria whose cut-off marks were released in a document PREMIUM TIMES obtained from JAMB on Friday.

The universities that adopted the 120 cut-off point include:Achievers University, Adeleke University, Caleb University, Fountain University, Caritas University, Novena University, Renaissance University, Ojiagu-agbani University, Evangel University, McPherson University, South Western University, Samuel Adegboyega University, Wellspring University, Western Delta University, Wesley University, Summit University, Edwin Clark University, Hezekiah University, Kings University, Arthur Javis University, Crown Hill University, Clifford University and Coal City University.

JAMB had on August 22 announced the 120 cut-off peg for universities following a policy adopted by vice chancellors, provosts, rectors, admission officers, registrars and other stakeholders in the education sector.

Universities were, however, at liberty to increase their cut-off marks, with majority doing so.

The new minimum cut-off point for universities had received lots of flak from parents, civic right groups, and students.

According to the list of adopted cut-off marks, the Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Lagos, University of Benin and University of Nigeria, pegged their cut-off point at 200.

Lagos State University according to the list is the only university that fixed its cut-off point at 190.

Islam for Muslims / Nigerian Hajj Pilgrims Death Rises To 14 by hiybee(m): 12:41pm On Sep 05, 2017
The number of Nigerian pilgrims who died during this year’s Islamic pilgrimage has risen to 14, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, has said.

The commission also said one of its staff, who died as a result of an illness, was among the victims.

This was revealed Monday by Nigeria’s head of National Medical Medical Team, Ibrahim Kana, at a briefing by the commission after a meeting of its management in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

“Total mortality at at September 4, is 14, while, seven were pre-Arafat with two pilgrims from Kaduna and one each from Yobe, Kogi; Kebbi; Katsina and the FCT; seven were post-Arafat, with two pilgrims from Kano (one international); and one each from Osun, FCT, Zamfara, Katsina and one NAHCON legal adviser,” Mr. Kana said.

The head of the medical team also said among the post-Arafat deaths, two occurred in Mina.

He said Muna/Arafat outing in this year’s hajj “was welcomed by scorching heat with temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius, thereby causing a lot of hardship on Nigerians and pilgrims in general.

“That resulted in early exhaustion, dehydration and even some developing heat stroke.”

He said the Nigerian medical team was on hand to offer medical and emergency ambulance services to the pilgrims.

“This led to reduction of suffering and prompt evacuation and referral to nearby hospitals in Arafat, Muzdalifa and Muna.

“Several cardiac resuscitation measures were conducted which saved some lives.

“We are also grateful that no outbreak of any disease was recorded in the Nigerian tents, even though the medical team was in hand providing services through the 25 clinics established inside many state tents. Over 6000 consultations were carried out,” he said.

Mr. Kana said the total number of consultations for Nigerian pilgrims as at Monday stood at 19,504 with 90 referrals to other hospitals.

IDB Slaughters 15,601 Sacrificial Animals for Nigerian Pilgrims

Meanwhile, the Saudi project for the utilisation of hajj meat, known as Adahi, which is managed by the Islamic Development Bank, IDB, has facilitated the slaughter of 15,601 sacrificial animals for Nigerian pilgrims during this year’s hajj.

The ritual was performed on behalf of those Nigerian pilgrims whose collections were made through JAIZ Bank, which was appointed by Nigerian hajj authorities and IDB as the sole collector in the country for the sacrificial animals.

Representatives of JAIZ Bank, along with Nigerian hajj officials, visited the slaughterhouses complex in Mina near Makkah during the Hajj days and were conducted round to witness the slaughter.

This is the third successive hajj season that JAIZ Bank handled collections for the hajj sacrifice, following its appointment as the sole agent in 2015 to collaborate with IDB to perform the ritual on behalf of Nigerian pilgrims.

Interested Nigerian pilgrims paid for their sacrifice animals through the bank, and subsequently the slaughter was handled by IDB at the Mina slaughterhouses.

The Adahi Project was established in 1983 to oversee the slaughter of sacrificial animals for hajj and other Islamic rituals. The project aims at serving pilgrims by providing livestock that meet Shari’ah and health requirements, and also help to make the meat available to beneficiaries around the world.

Since inception, the project has distributed around 20 million animal carcasses among the needy within Saudi Arabia and in 27 other countries.

Two members of staff of the Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, have been suspended for allegedly diverting tuition for private use.

The Rector of the institution, Dr. Silas Gyar, made this known yesterday when the state Commissioner for Education, Ahmed Aliyu-Tijjani, paid a visit to the institution.

He said, “The institution, in a move to curb indiscipline and misconduct, has suspended two members of staff accused of diverting school fees.”

Noting that investigation by a committee headed by the chairman of the Governing Council of the polytechnic, Dauda Ishaku, was still ongoing, he added that “four other staff members were suspended and later reinstated pending the final report of the committee.”

While calling on the state government and philanthropists to support the institution, Gyar listed the challenges of the school to include the non-accreditation of some of its courses, obsolete equipment as well as shortage of manpower and infrastructure.

He also appealed to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to allow the school access to the special intervention fund for development.

Aliyu-Tijjani, in his remark, assured the rector that the government would continue to invest in the education sector and provide facilities for institutions of learning.

While calling for a special intervention fund for the institution, the commissioner added that the government would assist the school by providing an engineering laboratory.

Politics / Anambra Guber: Kanu Working For APC – Uwazuruike by hiybee(m): 12:24pm On Sep 05, 2017
The founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has said opposition of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Indegenous People of Biafra is aimed at favouring the All Progressives Congress (APC) to edge out Governor Obiano through destabilisation.

The MASSOB leader who claimed the plot to deny Governor Obiano second tenure is being arranged by the security agencies, using Kanu also accused the Federal Government of using Kanu to destroy Biafra.

Uwazuruike spoke in the current edition of The Interview, accused Kanu of working hand-in-glove with the security services to destabilise the struggle for Biafra, starting with the forthcoming November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.

“Nnamdi is fighting against Biafra,” Uwazuruike said. “The security agencies have seen Nnamdi as somebody with a high value that they can use. They heard him shouting on radio and they approached him and he accepted to work with them.”

He continued, “No election in Anambra State is aimed at favouring the All Progressives Congress (APC) to edge out Governor Obiano through destabilisation; that’s the only thing and it’s being arranged by the security agencies, using Kanu.”

The MD/Editor-In-Chief of The Interview, Azu Ishiekwene, described the current edition as “a rare insight into the complex and troubling identity politics confronting the country.”

The MASSOB founder said it was regrettable that his efforts to achieve Biafra by peaceful means were being sabotaged by Kanu who has been hijacked by security agencies and some pay masters he refused to name.

In the interview, Uwazuruike said, “I know the mansions that Nnamdi Kanu and people like him have abroad…let Kanu keep disgracing himself like he’s doing now, because I know he’s being funded and I know those funding him.”

He described Kanu’s arrest and bail conditions as a set up, wondering why a man who was released on health grounds has not visited any hospital since his release from detention.

He criticised the Muhammadu Buhari administration for lacking the capacity to govern, saying, “APC won an election but didn’t have a plan to govern.”

Uwazuruike said former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, rigged President Goodluck Jonathan out of office, adding that, “If Jonathan had remained the president of Nigeria till today, the US dollar would not have exchanged for more than N50. Nigeria will still beg Jonathan to come back.”

Also in this edition, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, reflects on his recent legal battles with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission; while development activist, Furera Isma Jamure, provides some insights on her efforts to raise role models in the North.

NYSC / No Payment Of N75,000 To Former Corps Members – NYSC by hiybee(m): 10:08am On Aug 14, 2017
The National Youth Service Corps has debunked reports that the agency has launched a portal for payment of N75, 000 to former NYSC corps members.

This was made known by the NYSC in a press statement on Saturday.

“The attention of the NYSC Management has been drawn to publications with the above caption by some online platforms,” the NYSC said.

The agency said a blog called “Safe Job” and “Vanguard News”, cited a purported passage of bill on payment of stipends to ex-Corps members by the Senate, and published information claiming that the NYSC Director-General had launched a portal for the payment of the said stipends.

Sports / Cristiano Ronaldo Deserves Lengthy Ban For Pushing Referee As Barca Flop Without by hiybee(m): 9:54am On Aug 14, 2017
The Portuguese could be set for a long suspension after shoving the referee, while the Catalans clearly missed their recently departed Brazilian

Cristiano Ronaldo was the hero and also the villain. The Portuguese forward started the Spanish Supercopa Clasico on the bench, but he will dominate the headlines following his great goal, a ridiculous red card and then a petulant push on the referee that should see him handed a lengthy ban.

This was the first Barcelona match of the season, the first under Ernesto Valverde and the first since the departure of Neymar. Over in France, the Brazilian was making his debut for Paris Saint-Germain against Guingamp and impressed with a goal and an assist.

<<<<<

The manner of Neymar’s departure means he is not a popular player at Camp Nou now, but Ronaldo remains much more disliked by Barca’s supporters and, left out of the starting line-up, he was greeted with loud boos when he started to warm up early in the second half.

Those became almost deafening when he finally made his entrance for Karim Benzema after 58 minutes. By that point, Madrid were a goal up after Gerard Pique scored past his own goalkeeper, but Lionel Messi later levelled with a controversial penalty after Luis Suarez initiated contact with Keylor Navas.

It looked like a dive from the Uruguayan and Madrid’s defenders were furious, but it was perhaps somewhat clumsy from Navas as well with the ball heading out of touch. In any case, there was much more drama to come.

Ronaldo silenced Barca’s fans with a superb strike which nestled in the top corner, before taking his shirt off and holding it up to the crowd as Messi had done at the Santiago Bernabeu back in April. That brought a booking and just two minutes later, he was sent off after the referee adjudged he had dived in the area in an attempt to win a penalty,

The decision was definitely harsh, but Ronaldo’s reaction was unforgiveable. The Portuguese pushed the official in the back before walking off and the incident will definitely feature in the referee’s report following the match.

Unfair or not, it is simply unacceptable to push the referee and the Portuguese could now be in for a lengthy ban. By way of comparison, Italian forward Paolo Di Canio received an 11-match suspension for pushing the referee in action for Sheffield Wednesday in a Premier League game back in 1998.

Ronaldo is unlikely to be given such a long ban. However, his actions were inappropriate and unacceptable from a professional player of his standing.

Madrid went on to win 3-1 after Marco Asensio hit a stunner late on and the result raises serious doubts over Barcelona this season, especially with Neymar now departed, no replacement brought in, Andres Iniesta unable to last for 90 minutes and new signing Paulinho unlikely to transform the team’s fortunes.

Article continues below

For Real, Ronaldo’s push marred what was a great win and he now he has to wait to hear about his ban, although he is certain to miss Wednesday’s second leg. In the meantime, it already looks like it could be a long season for Barcelona.

Politics / PDP Attacks Osinbajo, Calls Him A Figurehead by hiybee(m): 9:46am On Aug 14, 2017
The main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, says Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is not in charge of the country.

It said actions taken by the Acting President had shown that power was not handed over to him contrary to the claim by the Presidency that ailing President Muhammadu Buhari ceded power to him (Osinbajo) before leaving Nigeria for London on medical trip more than 90 days ago.

Spokesperson for the party, Dayo Adeyeye, who spoke with one of Punch correspondents on Sunday, wondered why the Acting President had refused to assign portfolios to the two ministers that were sworn in more than two weeks ago.

Adeyeye, who was a former minister of state for works, observed that the action of the Acting President indicated that he was just a figurehead.

He said, “The Acting President is not in charge of the country. He is not in charge of anything. This is why nothing is moving forward.

“How do you explain a situation where two of the ministers who were sworn in after much pressure from the people and the National Assembly have not been assigned portfolios?

“He is not in charge. He is a mere figurehead and cannot do anything. The cabals are still in charge. That is why nothing is moving forward in this country.

“The two ministers are just idle. They have no offices, nowhere to resume to and nothing to do. What is the essence of their being sworn in then? They are ministers without portfolios.

“It is a constitutional breach on the side of the government because each state ought to have a minister each. Now, these two states had been without ministers for long and after you reluctantly appointed them, you refused to give them offices. “

The ministers are Prof. Stephen Ocheni from Kogi State and Mr. Suleiman Hassan from Gombe State.

Twenty days after Osinbajo administered the oath of office on the ministers, they have yet to be assigned portfolios.

Adeyeye said it was apparent that the All Progressives Congress was not ready to rule, adding that it won the 2015 presidential election in error.

He asked Nigerians to be patient, adding that 2019 would soon come when new elections would be held.

Politics / PDP Will Reclaim Power In 2019 Says Former President by hiybee(m): 2:27pm On Aug 13, 2017
Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Abuja announced that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had returned from limbo and will reclaim power in 2019.
Jonathan made this known in his address at the party’s special national convention.

<<<<<
He said that the party’s achievements while in power would rekindle the confidence of the electorate to vote it back in power in the 2019 general elections.

“The party is indeed back to reclaim its prime position as the party to lead Nigeria to greatness. As a human institution, we cannot claim to be perfect and as a political party, our accomplishments up to 2015 are clear for every Nigerian to see,’’ he said.

Jonathan said the achievements of the party while in power is evidence that PDP is a party of vision and accomplishments.

Highlighting achievements of the party, he said that elections conducted from 2011 by the government controlled by PDP met globally-accepted standard.

“We succeeded in doing that because of the leverage and the autonomy we gave to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). PDP is a party that wants to place Nigeria in a position to compete favourably with other countries,’’ he said.

On the economy, the former president said that PDP provided focused leadership through institutional and sectoral reforms which impacted positively on the country, especially in the last four years of our tenure.

“We tamed inflation at a single digit, maintained price stability, and drove the economy to become the largest in Africa. We also made Nigeria to be the number one foreign direct investment destination in the continent,’’ he said.

According to him, in 2012, PDP ensured that prices of food remained stable in spite of flood which affected 50 per cent of farmlands along the flood plains of river Niger and Benue.

Jonathan said that the country was able to regain its goodwill internationally because PDP pursued programmes and policies that were not only rewarding but were copied by other countries across the globe.

“We can recall that our agricultural transformation agenda transformed key agricultural value chains, boosted local production and created a new generation of young commercial farmers.

The introduction of electronic wallet checked corrupt practices in the distribution of fertilizer and enabled farmers to get fertilizer like all other agro inputs.

In the same vein, the YouWinprogramme empowered a crop of young Nigerians to go into entrepreneurship and in turn employed others,’’ he said.

Jonathan said that though his administration did not block all the loopholes, it came up with strong innovations to fight corruption.

According to him, we introduced the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and the Treasury Single Account (TSA) which has helped to reduce corruption.

“Government is run by policies, the creative thinking, brains in the executive council and in the civil servants were harnessed to get to where we are. If elected in 2019, PDP will fight poverty and ensure that food prices are reduced,’’ he added.

He urged Nigerians to partner with the party to restore good life in the country.

Education / DELSU Disclose To Conduct Aptitude Test For 2017/2018 UTME/DE Canididates by hiybee(m): 11:01am On Jul 21, 2017
Delta State university, DELSU Disclose To Conduct Aptitude Test For UTME/DE Canididates seeking admission into the university for the 2017/2018 academic session.

The Registrar of Delta State university (DELSU) has disclosed that it will conduct an aptitude test for utme and DE candidates applying for the 2017 admission into undergraduate prHe however stated that the aptitude test the school is going to conduct is quite different from the one conducted by JAMB and it will be computer-based.

When asked to state the difference between the computer based test the school is going to conduct and the Post-UTME test that was abolished by JAMB last year, the Registrar told newsmen that the Federal Government did not scrap post-UTME test.

He explained: “It is the same agency of the government that said ‘you can select your students’.

“Twenty-six thousand candidates applied to DELSU; how do you select, may be 5,000 or 6,000? There must be some kind of uniform test to assess them.

“Last year, we asked them to submit their secondary school results and we graded them. Do you know that people claiming to have ‘A’s in their results could not write their names?

“Some of them had forged results. We went to the internet and discovered that somebody who claimed to have scored 300 in UTME had just 120.

“So, if you use that type, you won’t get the best; that is why there is some kind of a little aptitude test for them.”

Regarding the N5000 candidates are expected to pay for the screening as against the 2,500 approved by the federal Government last year, he said that the N5000 is to cover the cost of the aptitude test as the schools is not in good financial position to cover the cost.

He mentioned that the school need money to get materials for the test, pay those that will administer the aptitude test and mark it as well as service its computers and develop the software for the test.
