OnePlus warmed up the crowd a few weeks ago by announcing its three year, $150 million partnership with legendary camera maker Hasselblad. Hasselblad cameras flew on Apollo 11 to the moon, now they come equipped on the latest Snapdragon 888 flagship.

The OnePlus 9 Pro introduces Fluid Display 2.0 and Warp Charge 50 Wireless charging. It also has a bespoke Sony IMX789 image sensor in its main camera. The vanilla model has its own upgrades.

OnePlus 9 Pro

The headlining feature this generation is the camera that Hasselblad helped develop and the OnePlus 9 Pro has the best version. On its first go-around in the smartphone segment, the Swedish camera maker focused on improving the color science of the two phones.
The main camera uses a IMX789 sensor that was co-developed with Sony. It’s a large 1/1.43” sensor with 1.12 µm pixels, 48MP resolution. It features the latest camera technologies, including dual native ISO, Digital Overlap HDR (DOL-HDR) and 2x2 on-chip lens (OCL). And OIS, of course.This sensor can produce 12-bit RAW images. The dedicated Hasselblad Pro Mode in the camera app will help you fine-tune your photos for a natural look and feel. The main sensor can also record 8K video at 30 fps as well as 4K at 120 fps. There’s a 2MP black & white camera on board meant to assist the main camera with monochrome shots.

The ultra wide-angle camera boasts another Sony sensor, the 50MP IMX766. The 1/1.56” sensor sits behind a freeform lens, which reduces distortion near the edges to 1% (compared to 10-20% for a typical lens). This camera has an autofocus system that allows it to shoot macro photos at just 4 cm distance.

This phone skips the periscope, equipping a standard telephoto lens instead. It offers 3.3x optical magnification (77 mm), bringing ever so slightly closer to the action than 8 Pro’s 3x lens. The 8MP sensor in that one has 1.0µm pixels and OIS.

The new Fluid Display 2.0 makes its debut with the OnePlus 9 Pro. It’s a 6.7” LTPO panel, which promises up to 50% power savings in general usage. This efficiency stems from the ability to adjust the refresh rate from the top 120Hz (for a smooth UI) all the way down to 1Hz (used when reading text or showing the Always On Display). The display can adapt to its content too, e.g. run at 24Hz for movies or 90Hz for Fortnite.

The 1440p+ display is built using the E4 emitting material and native 10-bit color depth. It has ambient light sensors on the front and back so that it can automatically adjust its color temperature. All of this earned it an A+ score from DisplayMate. The display is quite bright too, peaking at 1,300 nits.

The 120Hz refresh rate is backed by touch sampling rate of 240Hz, which improves response times when gaming. Speaking of gaming, let’s look at the chipset.

The OnePlus 9 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 888, of course, paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The new Cool Play setup is based on the 8T cooling solution, but with a larger vapor chamber, thicker graphite sheets and more copper foil for a higher capacity to pull heat away.

The phone comes with 8GB of RAM as standard, but you can upgrade to 12GB. Base storage is 128GB, with a 256GB option. Check the bottom of this article for a table with the prices.

Besides a new display, this phone also introduces Warp Charge 50 Wireless. The new wireless charger is bought separately and offers two coils so the 9 Pro can be charged vertically or horizontally (say, while you’re watching a movie). A full 1-100% charge takes only 43 minutes.

But if you are really in a hurry, then you can just use the Warp Charge 65T wired charger that comes with the phone. It’s twice as fast as the 8 Pro charger – 1-100% takes 29 minutes, 8 Pro’s 30W charger only gets to 50% in that time. Also, you can use this to charge other gadgets that support SB Power Delivery: a laptop, a power bank, a Nintendo Switch, etc (PPS is supported).

Finally, a bit about the phone’s hardware. It has an aluminum frame sandwiched between two panes of glass. The front is a curved pane of Gorilla Glass, the back has several options. The new hero color is Pine Green with a soft double-layer matte finish. Morning Mist shows a silver-to-black gradient and Stellar Black has a frosted finish that recalls the trademark sandstone look. The body is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance.

OnePlus 9

The OnePlus 9 gets a parred back version of the Hasselblad camera. The main module switches to the older IMX689 sensor – it is still a 1/1.43” 48MP sensor with 2x2 on-chip lens, dual native ISO and 12-bit RAW output. DOL-HDR is replaced with traditional HDR.

OIS is gone and while the camera keeps the 8K 30 fps mode, it loses the 4K 120 fps mode (it tops out at 4K 60 fps). The Hasselblad Pro Mode is still on board, despite the sensor change.

The good news is that the 50MP ultrawide camera is the same – same IMX766 sensor with freefrom lens and ability to shoot macro photos at 4 cm. The 2MP monochrome camera is still on board, but the biggest loss of going from Pro to vanilla is that you get no telephoto camera.

The vanilla OnePlus 9 has a first generation Fluid Display, meaning it has 120Hz refresh mode, but it is not adaptive. It’s a flat 6.55” AMOLED panel with 1080p+ resolution, just as we saw on the 8T. It did still earn an A+ score from DisplayMate, though, as it is HDR10+ certified and tops out at 1,100 nits of brightness.

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset with the new Cool Play cooling system. The phone is equipped with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage with the same configuration options – 8/128GB and 12/256GB.

The vanilla model also comes with a 4,500 mAh battery and a wired Warp Charge 65T (1-100% in 29 minutes). This is the first non-Pro model of the family to feature wireless charging (region dependent), though it only supports 15W Qi charging. Note that only the North American and European versions have this.

Both OnePlus 9 models feature dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, plus upgraded haptic feedback motors. Both models use the same selfie camera – 16 MP sensor (IMX471, 1.0 µm), fixed focus f/2.4 lens.

The OnePlus family expanded last year with the introduction of the Nord series, now it expands again with a phone that sits between the Nord mid-rangers and the main flagship series. We have some bad news, however: there's no R in India, but the 9R will be available only in India.The OnePlus 9R is powered by the Snapdragon 870, a revamped version of the chip that powered the 8T. In fact, the story of the 9R is very similar – it’s last years hardware spruced up for 2021.

The phone has a 6.55” Fluid AMOLED display with 1080p+ resolution and an HDR10+ certification. The display has a 120 Hz refresh rate and a 240 Hz touch sampling rate.. This one is a flat panel, just like the ones on the 8T and vanilla 9.

The camera is also lifted off the 8T, starting with the main module with a 48MP sensor (IMX586, 1/2”, 0.8µm) and Optical Image Stabilization. It is joined by the 16MP ultrawide camera (123º lens, IMX481 sensor), the 5MP macro and 2MP monochrome cameras. The phone can record 4K video at 60 fps and capture slow-motion clips (240 fps at 1080p, 480 fps at 720p). It also features Video Portrait mode and EIS on top of OIS for extra smooth footage.

OnePlus has positioned the 9R as something of a gaming phone. The Snapdragon 870 GPU is easily more powerful than those of mid-range chipset. The chipset is kept cool by a vapor chamber.

For the battery, OnePlus used its favorite system – a 4,500 mAh battery combined with Warp Charge 65, matching the new OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. No wireless charging here, however. Still, plugging in for 15 minutes will top up the battery enough to last you the whole day. A full charge takes 39 minutes.

Additionally, the phone boasts stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos (no 3.5 mm jack, though). It will be available in Lake Blue and Carbon Black colors.

The OnePlus 9R will be available in 22 days and it will come in two configurations, starting with the base model with 8/128 GB memory and a INR 40,000 price tag ($550/€465). The other version has 12/256 GB memory and costs INR 44,000 ($605/€510).

New data shared by IDC for the Japanese market shows not only that Apple is the number one phone brand in the country but also that the Cupertino-based tech giant has absolutely no rival locally.

The Q4 figures indicate Apple has managed to secure a market share of no less than 52.6 percent, which means more than 1 in 2 phones sold last quarter in the country was an iPhone.

And more surprisingly, Samsung wasn’t the runner-up, with Sharp actually getting the second place with a share of 12.4 percent. Kyocera was third, followed by Samsung with just 6.8 percent of the sales.

The mobile market in Japan reached 11.4 million phones last quarter, and this represents a 10.6 percent year on year growth for the entire industry. Apple sold over 6 million iPhones.
Apple also number one worldwide

Data shared by Gartner for global sales in Q4 2020 shows Apple has also managed to surpass Samsung and eventually become the number one phone maker worldwide.

“The launch of the 5G iPhone 12 series helped Apple record double-digit growth in the fourth quarter of 2020. Apple surpassed Samsung to retake the No. 1 global smartphone vendor spot. The last time Apple was the top smartphone vendor was in the fourth quarter for 2016,” Gartner explained.

Apple sold 79.9 million phones worldwide to secure a share of 20.8 percent, while Samsung was the runner-up with 62.1 million sold units and a 16.2 percent share.

“The sales of more 5G smartphones and lower-to-mid-tier smartphones minimized the market decline in the fourth quarter of 2020,” Anshul Gupta, senior research director at Gartner, explained. “Even as consumers remained cautious in their spending and held off on some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and pro-camera features encouraged some end users to purchase new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones in the quarter.”

Telegram has just released a new major update for its messaging app on iPhone and Android, and this time the parent company has included some pretty big new features.

First and foremost, beginning with this new version, the option to auto-delete messages is available in all chats, not just in secret chats.

The setting to automatically remove messages in secret chats has been around since 2013, but starting with this update, users can enable it in all chats, as they are allowed to configure if they want the chats to be cleared after 24 hours or 7 days after sending.

This new version also introduces widgets for both iPhone and Android.

“On Android, chats and messages in the widget will always be up to date, and you can further expand the widget to take up more of your screen. On iOS, widgets will only get fresh data occasionally and can't be expanded – this is due to system limitations,” the company explains in the official release notes.

This update brings expiring invite links, which you can configure to no longer be available after a specific duration, number of uses, or both. In addition, you can also create links in Telegram using a scannable QR code, with the app to take care of everything for you.

Telegram now comes with unlimited member support for groups.

“Telegram groups allow up to 200,000 members to exchange messages, media and stickers. Groups that are close to the limit can now convert into Broadcast Groups that allow unlimited members. Converting to a Broadcast Group makes it so that only admins can send messages, but members can still join voice chats,” the parent company explains.

And last but not least, there are new animated emoticons that make chats even more exciting after the latest version is installed.

Microsoft has officially announced Office 2021 for consumers and small businesses, with the launch projected to take place later this year.

The big news, however, is that this next version of the productivity suite would be offered with a one-time purchase option, which means customers who don’t want to get a subscription will be able to buy Office in the traditional way.

However, worth knowing that the non-subscription version misses out on the new features that are added at a later time, though Microsoft will obviously offer support with patches and bug fixes.

The company says Office 2021 will be supported for five years.

“We also plan to release Office 2021 for personal and small business use later this year. Office 2021 will also be supported for five years with the traditional “one-time purchase” model. We do not plan to change the price for these products at the time of the release. We will announce more details about new features included in Office 2021 closer to general availability,” the company said.
Launch later this year for macOS and Windows

Office 2021 will be available for both 32- and 64-bit systems and will arrive with dedicated Windows and macOS versions.

Microsoft has already confirmed another one-time purchase version of Office is coming in the future, so the company is projected to share more information rather sooner than later.

“To fuel the work of the future, we need the power of the cloud. The cloud is where we invest, where we innovate, where we discover the solutions that help our customers empower everyone in their organization—even as we all adjust to a new world of work. But we also acknowledge that some of our customers need to enable a limited set of locked-in-time scenarios, and these updates reflect our commitment to helping them meet this need,” Microsoft explains.

An official support document for the upcoming Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser got leaked this week, providing us with an early look at some of the specs of the first preview build.

By the looks of things, this early version of the browser would only run on Windows 10 64-bit.

Microsoft said in late 2018 when announcing the migration from EdgeHTML to Chromium that Microsoft Edge would eventually be offered to users on other operating systems too, including Windows 7 and macOS. However, it looks like the first preview build would only run on Windows 10, with Microsoft most likely planning to roll it out to everyone else at a later time.

Details as to when Microsoft could publish the first build of Microsoft Edge aren’t available right now, but given that leaks are currently surfacing at a much faster pace than before, there’s a good chance its release is just around the corner.
