Liverpoolfc , iamdeclan, I was opportuned to visit an old friend who is currently doing his masters in anatomy at UITH ( UNILORIN) some days ago and the lecturer asked them what they intended doing after their Msc program. I was so surprised when many of them said they don't know. Even those that seemed to know were totally off point. Imagine an Msc student saying he wants to venture into business once he's done another said he wanted to continue his football career . Com'on, these are dreams you can achieve with your Bsc or even an SSCE certificate. The problem of many Nigerian graduates is that they tend not to have a defined career path which has really eaten deep into these category of people. Why stress yourself that far when you know you have no interest in the end product?

Now DAT ball part got me ROTFL... God dey oo.. its common truly but I tink its more amidst students and graduates from our part of education (BMS). I guess its cos students ain't informed abt what to do & dey are still waiting for a readily made job.. Enlightenment should do though dose masters students no try at all.

I would seriously like to relate with you titi. I'm also a graduate of physiology from unilorin but even if I have lots of regrets, I still thank God for my life. I just had to move on and focus on a totally different field. Prior to graduation, I had so many things on my mind, e.g doing ICAN, going for another undergraduate course in fields like economics etc. I had to start up a small business just to make ends meet. Physiology, anatomy and courses tagged under BMS is practically a waste of time and finance I must say because the labour market doesn't need you (yes I said so) because the jobs that are meant for BMS graduates are already being taken over by the so called ''doctors''. Little wonder you were denied studying chem path at Msc level. Come to think of it, if an MBBS holder should apply for chem path at Msc level, I bet my life they won't hesitate to admit such fellow.
Its so painful that people who fail to get admission to study medicine are being disposed off into physiology and anatomy and left to suffer for nothing and I keep wondering how many of this category of graduates do we need to keep producing every year. This is total brutality because we practically do what the MBBS holders do. The only difference between us is that at the end, we are given a ''useless'' Bsc degree while they get a very ''useful'' MBBS degree. A few things they do in clinical science too also makes up the little difference.
My advice to those coming behind is never accept any offer to study physiology or anatomy. You will waste four years of your delicate life thinking the future is bright for you but at the end, you would be full of regrets ( I don't pray for such for anyone). Secondly, don't be carried away by that statement people make these days ''this is Nigeria, you can work anywhere with any certificate''. My dear brothers and sisters don't be deceived, don't let anyone come and tell you that ''i know of someone that studied yoruba and is working in the bank''. Come to think of it, will you just carry your certificate in yoruba and your C.V and apply for a bank job? (in fact, the receptionist will just fling your documents away) This is near impossible and the only way it can be possible and work out is having a very good connection (which is what Nigeria is all about today) and the special grace of God.
Also, winners72 talked about taking JAMB again for a second degree. I must say that isn't a bad idea at all. Before graduation, I was so desperate to get out of physiology and do something better that I wrote JAMB in 100L, 200L and even 300L all of which didn't work out. And this year, just like winners72, I might be writing UTME again with kids i'm old enough to give birth to but such is life, you just have to move on and don't be down casted. The beauty about education is that it doesn't have limit. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who was in his 70's and went back to school sometimes last year isn't a fool. He knew what he wanted to achieve but however if you feel you don't want to take this step again, there are lots and lots of things you can venture into. You can take ICAN and within 1 1/2 years, if you do very well, you would be certified. The business and entrepreneurship world is also there for you.
Bottom line is bone your age, shun your status and look for something good to do. I seriously don't like it when people like titi or winners72 come here to say they've been looking for jobs for 3-5 years. If the jobs don't come to you then go to the jobs.... Oh did I ever tell you I once applied as a driver for a company here in lagos well thats another story for another day.

I don't tink returning to skul is a prob wen u have the finance and ur life is progressing. Obasanjo surely didn't return to skul for money. Yes, opportunist for graduate of physiology in their field is limited but I still bliv a graduate in any course will make it either by delving out of the field to oda field or by bringing revolution to it.Just lyk u said, businesses, entrepreneur and ICAN ain't left out. Going back 4 medicine is also an option for dose u want it.

I've been following this thread for a while and I feel its high time I commented. Physiology and Anatomy I must confess is a total waste of time and finance. Its just like someone seeking a degree in mathematics and another seeking a degree in algebra. Why would an employee attend to a graduate of algebra when he has a mathematician at his disposal? That's the case with BMS. The jobs that are meant for you guys are already occupied by the doctors. The way the discrimination is growing by the day is so alarming. I used to tell people then that its pays to study an easy course like French or human kinetics and come out with a first class and your life will be better than study anything as hard as BMS and remain frustrated for years. The best thing to do is to just branch out totally or go for a second degree. Even if you manage to get a job in a pharm firm like liverpoolfc, I'm sorry to say, how much will they be paying you. Anytime I remember the money I spent those days on my final year project as a physiology undergraduate , I always wanna cry because BMS in general is one of those courses where you spend a whole lot of money just to do final year project alone before you are being released to graduate.
BMS courses are not professional courses, rather they are study courses which are highly unrecognized and unfamiliar when I was in the university, anytime someone ask me about what I'm studying, I tell them physiology and they be like "Sorry did you mean psychology ?" and the next question that usually follow is "Alright then where can you work?
Dear brethren, let's not deceive ourselves, physiology and anatomy ain't worth it. It will bring nothing but frustration to your lives and in the present state of the Nigerian economy, you will just die for nothing and the birds of the air will joyfully feed on your carcass.

D problem with the BMS courses is known to virtually all now. D problem on ground is what is the way forward?? especially for graduates of the course who can't obtain a D.E cos dey graduated wit 2'2 and still avnt passed jamb after writing more dan once.

You are right bros, out of 7 of us currently undergoing training in M.Sc physiology in a Nigerian university, 6 of us are medical doctors and a physiotherapist. The simple explanation is that universities need medical doctors in Basic Medical Sciences in order to secure and maintain their accreditation to run MBBS programme. Without a sizeable number of medical doctors in departments of Human Physiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry and Pharmacology a university may loose accreditation to graduate medical doctors.
As suggested by many people above if you have a B.Sc kindly enroll for PG programmes, M.Sc and PhD. These ones have better career opportunity than those with B. Sc only.

I have a B.sc in Human Physiology from one of the federal universities in this country, and i can say outright that there is little professional niche for the basic medical sciences in Nigeria. I have personally never looked at my discipline as a meal ticket in itself, because right from when i was in school (i graduated in 2004), even doctors (MBBS holders) had started having their own challenges. I often looked at the kind of cars they drove and how they dressed and simply knew i wanted far more than that. So i started writing my IT certifications from 300L. Now i am almost 10 years in my field of IT, an esoteric field at that because it wasn't vastly popular at the time, and i see my colleagues who are now doctors now not even anywhere close to me in terms of earnings and standing... in actual fact, lots of them have gone either into research (overseas), into business or into administrative medicine because of the allure of the lucre... practice simply cuts it no more (ditto the strikes and protests etc in the health sector these days).

So what is my point?

1. Realize that little niche exists for para-medicine in this country

2. Go overseas if you can, para-meds have better working hours and really good pay there, especially in the US, UK and Asia

3. Get your Physiology/Anatomy certificate, and get an education with it, not just literacy. You will find that a little dexterity when applying the kind of mind that got you your degree in the first place to other disciplines will yield amazing results; and

4. Quit whining and start figuring out which of 2 & 3 you wanna do. Better to start late than never.
