Nothing is impossible, only if you believe “. These very words kept ringing in my head like an iPod stuck on replay as I alighted the fare which brought me to the confines of the University of Benin, Benin city. Though the phrase was popular, hells! it was almost a cliche at the time, but something about the voice of my dad when he said those words to me, gave me a somewhat ” challenging feeling”. I have always performed well right from time immemorial, I never fell short of the first 10 brightest students in my primary school, at a point I thought I was the best student in the world, but I was later gonna discover that life in the university is a different ballgame. I came to learn that the previous knowledge I garnered from my sec school had little or nothing to do with anything. I came to terms with the fact that in sec schools “we were taught knowledge not how to study”. I remember coming back home every day from school with my uniform virtually tattered and looking scraggy, only to pounce on whatever I find in my mom’s cooking pot and then run off to play soccer. I never had quality time for my books cos I always felt that prior to the exams I could easily scan through my notes and go In to take examinations from which I always came out successful. Little did I know that I was paving way for my impending doom. I got admitted into the famous uniben, and like every other freshman that year, I hoped to make good grades after my first year. Sadly, I got caught up in The euphoria that preceded my admission and failed to study. My earlier stated hope looked set to crumble not until I met a friend, whom I owe my reignition. This dude changed my mindset and set me back on the right course. Soon enough, I found myself attending tutorial Sessions, going to library( though I spent a bulk of my time here sleeping), and joining reading groups. To sum it all up, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for me. I finished my 100l academic session with a CGPA of 4.89. I’m not trying to intimidate you with my GPA, I’m trying to tell you that yours can be better! Yes, you can finish your 100l in any federal university with a CGPA of 5.0. This would be a solid start to an eventual first class honour. But “nothing lasts that comes easy”, hard work doesn’t kill, its the GUILT of doing nothing that kills. Don’t enter the university with the mindset of ” I’m naturally intelligent, hells I can pass any examination without studying”. Granted, you could be “naturally intelligent” but you would certainly find urself with carry-overs in as many courses. Don’t deceive yourself!
