...and that's down to mismanagement. Power subsidy has replaced petrol and is always rising. Even in darkness. That is corruption. Govt increased the rate and most customers are paying the rate so what is the point of increasing subsidy? It shows you that wherever the money is, corruption will always be there and the solution is to eliminate corruption.

THE CAUSE of CORRUPTION is subsidies and government ownership of productive assets & companies.

EVIDENCE -

compare corruption in private and government universities.

compare corruption in the telecoms BEFORE and AFTER privatization and deregulation of the sector.

You mentioned forex subsidy. Round tipping is a form of corruption facilitated by forex subsidy and regulated price.

In the USA the major form of corruption in the crude oil and natural gas sector involves ALLOCATION of wells located on government owned lands. Look up USA BLM oil leases scandal OIG report.

Anyone that doesn't understand these truths just doesn't want to.

Forex subsidy was unsustainable and there was no way out.

ALL the subsidies are unsustainable...forex, electricity, rice, university education and health, railways and NIPOST and NTA & FRCN, pilgrimage...these are STILL being paid.

The worst part is they don't achieve any goals of the subsidy, only poor quality and scarcity.

Nigeria must scrap ALL subsidies. And STOP printing naira at rates above productivity. In fact the best thing would be to adopt bitcoin in order to eliminate inflation. Or maybe gold backed digital asset of some sort.

Omoawoke:
That’s our Kemi!!

Kemi to the world!

As long as she identifies as Yoruba, all her sins are forgiven

Who exactly is the fool?
Someone who did not bother to check his history and swallowed without a single thought all that was fed to him through indoctrination from birth? You are the biggest fools to ever exist in and out of the galaxy.

Your Jesus is white, your Mohammed is Arab, but you curse your ancestors as evil, yet you are a replica of your ancestors.
Claim Abraham and Noah and Judah from now till the world ends as your ancestors, you will forever remain a black slave who look nothing like them.
You justify your colonization and slavery and thank them for enslaving you. You and your likes are irredeemable fooolllsss

Before they brought their religion to colonize you, we knew God already in Africa. They took your own from you and gave you theirs to control your head. Centuries later, you are still here talking trash. And you open your dirty mouth to call someone a fool for not following your delusions ? How dare you!

Come, Oga Gerrard, this guy you're quoting would find more in common with me than with you. The MENTAL SELF ENSLAVEMENT is worse than anything Europeans and Arabs did to us. You mourn the evils of colonialism but 99% of Black Africans continue to embrace it today, especially on Fridays and Sundays grin

Everyone knows about the evils done in the Congo. About as bad as what the wonderful Chinese are doing to the Uighurs today....TODAY, not decades ago. TODAY.

Besides, the Anglo did better than most. At least they were the FIRST nation or tribe in recorded history to outlaw slavery and they did it in the course of their colonial projects. For the record - just in case this ever comes up again - NOTHING done by ANY OTHER RACE OR NATION will be worse than what Black Africans have done in by selling THEIR OWN KIND into slavery. That is my answer to EVERYTHING about colonialism.

To make it worse, the descendants of the slave sellers are now competing with their victims for the meagre reparations given by the buyers.

Read the sentence above again, process it and then come tell me with your full chest that Europeans did us bad. Abeg no de shame me.

Colonialism is evil but African self depradation and inferior intellect is much worse. Name ONE TRIBE or COUNTRY that disproves the statement.

1) They should be careful not to antagonize who? The US should go to blazes. If those two countries decide to deal with Trump, the Republicans would lose the midterm elections big time. The next Democratic president would win with greater than 81m votes. People were fed up with his divisiveness and incompetence during his previous term. The mishandling of the pandemic was the very embodiment of his administration.

2) You seem to think that Trump is intelligent. He isn't. His love for tariffs is simply one of them. He doesn't even know the implication of tariffs. He doesn't think things through

3) Illegal immigration into America through the Mexican border has dropped dramatically. Mexico simply prevents them from entering into Mexico in the first place. I trust Trump will steal the credit for it. He is fond for such.

4) Inflation too has dropped considerably.

5) You know what? I won't say anything further, but when the shit hits the fan, don't say I didn't warn you.

shocked shocked shocked

1) President Sheinbaum of Mexico already STOPPED two migrant caravans heading to the USA immediately Trump became President. The man isn't even in the White House and the Mexican President has her panties in a wad and clutching her pearls. She issued a statement the other day that she doesn't believe in closing borders....but this is just the start. At least TWO Trump advisers or nominees have stated they will push to declare Mexican drug cartels TERRORIST organizations in order to justify sending special forces into Mexico.

Nooooo, Mexico had better be careful. The USA can invade Mexico and destroy the top 5 Mexican cities and NOTHING will happen, but no need to go that far. They don't want the tariffs, they're already begging. Anyone can Google all the things I've mentioned here. Everyone pay attention, Mexico will get in line or pay a heavy price.

2) Mr Trump is intelligent enough to get elected President of the USA.

3) This one is fuuuunnnnyyyyyy!!!! What an indictment of the Biden-Harris Admininstration!!!! Illegal migration has dropped in the last 6 months, that is true.....BECAUSE THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN was in progress. Meaning they could have stopped this disaster ANY TIME in the past 4 years. I've repeatedly posted this NY Times article, everyone should read it.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/11/briefing/us-immigration-surge.html

The Biden Administration and border czar VP Harris stood by and allowed THE LARGEST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION WAVE in the history of the USA, bigger than ANYTHING ever witnessed in the entire history of the Republic. And only saw fit to stop it when it was time for re-election. grin

4) The latest inflation numbers show inflation went up. Anyone can check the numbers, they're released once a month.

5) No matter what happens, Trump and a right wing Republican government is better than anything the Democrats have to offer.

Just on crime alone, this election will bring relief. Do you read what's been going on in Blue States since 2019 or so? Dear Sir, California LEGALIZED theft of property below $1000, you could break into a car and steal the radio or other property in the presence of police and they couldn't arrest!

There are MURDER CASES committed on video in California where the Democrat District Attorneys declined to prosecute as major crimes. The Jasper Wu case is the glaring one that led to the defeat of the Oakland District Attorney. Look it up!!! Come on man, that's insane! In Blue State New York City, the District Attorney has a rule on file that ARMED ROBBERIES will not be prosecuted as felonies (serious crime) if the victim isn't hurt.

This trend was the same in ALL the Blue States.....California, Washington State, Illinois, New York, for whatever reason these Democrat states simply REFUSED to prosecute crime. Why? The thing is just craazzyyy!!!! People were strolling into major retail stores with large bags, loading up and walking out and police would refuse to come and even take a report. What the HELL? And these same States severely discouraged their citizens from carrying guns to defend themselves. Wetin be that abeg?

Where do you live? Just do an internet search and dispute anything I've written here.

Noooo, the USA was overdue for CHANGE and not the type APC gave to Nigeria.

Good Luck to Nigerians.

How will the prices of groceries come down when you plan to place a tariff of 25% on Mexican imports, a major source of your agric products? I am certain my food products from Canada as well which may face tariffs of 25% as well.

In addition, he wants to deport the very people in America that do the backbreaking farm work that locals shy from. This will definitely shoot up the price of food and not bring it down. Deporting them would lead to a severe labor shortage on farms, and processing factories.

The only way he can bring the prices of groceries down is to heavily subsidize the farmers which defeats his goal of making government smaller. He will only resort to this so as not to lose face.

The man does not know what he is doing. Biden scored a jaw dropping 81m votes in 2020, to beat Trump because Americans were fed up with his antics. His disastrous handling of the pandemic was the best embodiment of his 4 year rule.

His bad policies so overshadow his good ones.

The next four years would be disastrous for the world and its economy.

Oga if Trump is such a disaster and Biden is so good, the USA voters who experienced BOTH had a chance to make a choice.

Maybe the 2nd Term of President Trump becomes a disaster. Until then, we can agree that THE PEOPLE made their choices based on their experiences and interests. It's really that simple.

Thanks.

You like many others are simply mesmerized by the cult of this man, the same way many were with Buhari.

He does have some good policies but his bad ones so overshadow the good ones that it will be one step forward, and 10 backwards.

I even blame Canada and Mexico.

You don't correct your enemy when he is making a mistake.

Canada & Mexico had better be careful in how they antagonize the USA. Mexico in particular, the USA might resort to MILITARY ACTION to stop all the ciminality at the border, as in a full scale invasion. Anyway their President Scheib or whatever already buckled and started stopping migrant caravans. They know better than to mess with President Trump.

President Trump imposed tariffs in his first term. Inflation was NOT a problem during that first term. Anyone can look up the records. FACT.

Biden didn't revoke the tariffs, they're still in place. They've not been cited by any official stats or credible data keepers as a major source of inflation. Instead we know the major source of inflation was the reckless printing & spending of money using Covid as an excuse. Also Biden started restricting energy supplies. This is factual, anyone can look up the CHART of inflation and also petrol prices, they trended higher IMMEDIATELY Biden took office.

I posted a link to a New York Times story that everyone should pay attention to. It turns out that the 4 years of the Biden Presidency is now officially rated as having the HIGHEST LEVELS OF IMMIGRATION, legal and illegal, in the history of the USA. Higher than the Ellis Island immigration period. This is astounding....and the American people knew it and could sense it. They complained and were called RACIST.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/11/briefing/us-immigration-surge.html

I believe it's an open article. People should please read it and more importantly, the comments from readers, most seem to be liberals.

Illegal immigration is a crime. Why would anyone vote for a party or government that tolerates crime? That doesn't make any sense. It's crime....crime is wrong, why is this hard to understand? This isn't just about ILLEGAL immigration though, same thing applies to OTHER crimes.

District Attorneys were refusing to prosecute MURDER cases, some of which were caught on video....clear cases of murder. Hellllooooooo!!!!!

Why would a State Government LEGALIZE shoplifting as happened in California? That's INSANE!!!!! They made it OK to rob retail stores and steal from cars in California, the video is all over the internet. Nordstrom, Whole Foods and Walgreens were shutting down stores and they explicitly blamed crime as the reason!!!! This is why so many in that deep Blue state voted for Republicans...in California!!!

Back to tariffs. Nobody knows what will happen. At the New York Stock Exchange last week, Mr Trump announced he was going to cut corporate taxes from 21% to 15% but only for corporations that produce in the USA. Let's give him a chance. If the American people can live with a regime that legalized crime and suppressed energy supplies, whatever Trump does should be a breeze. They've seen worse.

Trump gained in almost all states, all demographics. Its simply yes we heard you but we trust trump more than you

I love the Trump & Republican gain among Blacks, from 2016 they DOUBLED their share of the Black vote to around 15%. So much for racism.

The vote in California, Illinois and New Jersey is a sign of the times. California had the BIGGEST RIGHTWARD SHIFT in the country. Anyone can go online and check the news. Ten counties in California flipped from Democrat to Republican. The biggest concerns in Cali were immigration and crime.

They voted out TWO Democrat big city District Attorneys (Los Angeles & Oakland) who were soft on crime. The one in Oakland initially declined felony charges for several Black teens who had a street shootout among themselves and murdered a 2 year old Asian kid !!!! Even till today she still refused to apply full charges.

California LEGALIZED shoplifting and theft. It took a REFERENDUM to make it a crime to steal something worth less than $1,0000. And the Governor opposed the referendum. It's insane. Why would anyone vote for people who push those policies? Nonsense.

Even after paying off my mortgage, the government can still seize my house and land if I don't pay my yearly $5200. The annoying part is that it increases by like $200 every year.

And Lord help you, if you go and build swimming pool or have a nicer back yard or use nicer finishings like coffered ceiling, pot lights, crown mould e.t.c Your property will be re-evaluated and the taxes increased again. cheesy

1)We pay taxes hoping it will be for the common good. If paying a lil bit higher price will improve the quality of life, why not.

2) wrt immigration and drug trafficking a lot of families have suffered Federal money is wasted on criminals, handouts to illegals and their jail upkeep.

3) Its not possible for govt to do everything without a small price to pay.

1) As with a lot of policies that go wrong, the best thing is not to fix what isn't broken. The major error of USA trade policy was allowing China into the WTO or granting them MFN in the 1990s. It was a collosal mistake.

Tarriffs are generally a bad policy. However it seems the USA is under siege so anything goes
There are Trump Tarriffs from 2016 that were never removed and are STILL IN EFFECT today.
Americans may also be willing to pay the extra prices. Time will tell.

2) The USA needs to drastically reduce immigration, especially from 3rd World and undeveloped countries. The immigration system has been GROSSLY ABUSED. For example, the statistics show that over 50% of immigrant headed households are on some kind of federal welfare. That's outrageous.

The emphasis should be on a closely monitored GUEST WORKER program of the kind that exists in Saudi Arabia. Such programs already exist in the USA, they can be expanded.

3) Too much government is bad. Leave people alone to live their lives.

In Sweden the government gives each and every child an allocation of money to choose where they want to go to school. Last I read over 55% of Swedish families use that money to put their children in PRIVATE SCHOOLS.

But Bernie Sanders & AOC and the Democrats fight tooth and nail every year to suppress private schooling in the USA. They want to be like Sweden though. Yes they do.

With due respect, I find your bolded comment very distasteful. There are lots of brilliant young Nigerian students who got into highly sought courses with hardwork, grit and sweat.

Sometimes, one talks to the average Nigerian elder and you understand why Nigeria has been economically comatose all these years.

Anyways, some things are better left unsaid.

#ThinkingOutLoud.

It's always good to share knowledge. If you have any systematic analysis you can share as to why Nigeria is economically comatose, it would be good to put it out. Everyone will claim to make it through University in Nigeria by hard work, yet everyone KNOWS the corruption, cheating and nepotism is widespread and acceptable part of the culture.

The whole Nigerian schtick of using exceptionalism as a substitute for the norm is sickening. The migration argument brings it out full bore.

Comment - UK & USA are better places for Nigerians to succeed.

Nigerian Argument - but Dangote, Agboola and Don Jazzy made it in Nigeria!

Nigerians make all claims to academic achievement but there's very little they've contributed to the world that has made large scale change or improvement to human life. grin Living in Houston presented opportunities to challenge Nigerian oil & gas engineers on this. Some of the conversation is laughable, not worth reporting here. Similar to the typical Unilag or UNN educated lawyer who will claim Nigerians can own land in Nigeria.

Observers can only go by results. The outcome of Nigerian education is clear.

Black Americans were sold into slavery by Nigerians and achieved full rights of USA citizenship in 1964. They have the most wealth and highest HDI of any national group of Negroes on the planet.

Black South Africans got freedom and self rule in 1990. They're the richest and have highest HDI of Black Africans on the Continent.

Nigeria got independence in 1960 and has achieved the distinction of being the Poverty Capital of the World since snatching that honor from India in 2018. grin

While she was a woman of heroic accomplishments, Margaret Sanger had some beliefs, practices, and associations that we acknowledge, denounce, and work to rectify today. Her life story provides a portrait that is bold, fascinating, formidable, human, complicated, and flawed.

Why the discomfort with her legacy? Anyone can search the internet and find out. Planned Parenthood know Margaret Sanger was a well known eugenicist or whatever that believed that Negroes should be wiped out and advocated abortion as a means to promote that genocide. It's beyond any debate, it's fact....except for those who believe that TRUTH IS A DISTRACTION.

That’s why I don’t argue with men about abortion.
Sorry to the supportive guys out there but even when some guys mean well or are neutral like Ibe claims he is, you can’t get them to make the necessary connections on why it’s critical to women’s health and future.

He’s providing stats to show that planned parenthood gave more abortions to black women as if to say it’s a national conspiracy. These women weren’t forced.

I’m sure he knows that;
1) a lot of low income communities use planned parenthood for general gynecological care including preventative care.
2) majority of black women grew up in low income communities hence it makes sense if they’re the ones being served more by this organization. Doesn’t mean other race of women in other communities aren’t getting abortions in their communities.

I’m sure if he tried just a little, he would be able to make the connection between access to planned parenthood and the rising number of black women who’ve been able to get out of the hood by completing high school and graduating college without unplanned pregnancies holding them back.

Planned Parenthood was founded explicity as an organization to promote the genocide of Negroes using abortion. There's no controversy.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

The reason Sweden doesn't need a minimum wage, and has a higher income, is the density of Union memberships, which is at 69%, compared to the USA that's only at 10%. Meaning majority of workers are part of a union there.

This has the effect of having a stronger collective bargaining power by workers, to the extent that even the minority of non unionized workers benefit from it.

You can see something to a similar effect in the USA if you compare the income of Unionized workers, to non unionized workers.

That's a good point but not there's an even more basic thing in play. Sweden wages higher than USA? Hmmm. Maybe, I'll look and see.

Sweden is what it is because it's homogeneous and the effectiveness of their Labour unions results from that. If unions are so widespread in Sweden how come they don't fight tooth and nail to reduce the heavy taxation of wages?

In the USA where labour unions represent fewer people, wages are taxed comparatively less. In fact workers at the lower end, say the bottom 20% pay zero taxes in the USA and in fact get a rebate.

Labour Unions in diverse nations tend to be notoriously ineffective. Any reading of the history of USA labour unions can confirm this. Latest union strike in USA was by the ILO....

Ditto for Nigeria. The labour unions are COMPLETELY CORRUPT, they're actually controlled by Organized Crime and used for extortion.

That's the usual outcomes of labour unions in a diverse nation. Similar to transport, academic and other unions in Nigeria.

Liberals loooove Sweden but don't want to do the things that have made Sweden a high HDI nation.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Should we give a flat tax a try to everyone from poorest to richest pay a flat percentage? I am sure you will say no. You want some people to pay more and not you?

The lopsidedness of the progressive USA tax system is astounding.

Sweden, the country that USA liberals love soooo much, has a REGRESSIVE tax system. They tax labour heavily and give invesors a soft touch. Sweden doesn't have a minimum wage law.

It has the effect of encouraging investment which leads to higher incomes.

Good Luck to Nigerians.

Nowadays the tide has turned and the private schools are better. If you have money and are to send your kids to school in Nigeria today, probably a private school will be preferred over a FGC or a Federal University

Would you care to speculate why the tide turned? Despite much better Federal funding?

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Mr Ibe,

I have read your posts, especially on the breakdown of basic economics, and all I can say is: well done! You are a good, mellow and thoughtful teacher. Some of us would have been pissed since in a bid to re-teach secondary school economics to grown adults. It is funny how some people malign capitalism yet use the results of its system and work in profit-oriented organisations. This is similar to those who champion open borders but would kick against Fulani herdsmen domiciling in their communities.

Well done!

Seriously, I've tried to teach myself to mellow down and do logic and facts only. As you've said repeatedly, Black Africans are natural socialists grin

I don't know everything, I know that much for sure. Most people are just who they are, they rarely change.

I think I'm much older than you and I didn't know half of what you know at your age. shocked Sometimes the thing de vex me sef, for real.

Given the addiction to melons & chicken thighs that is usual at younger ages, I don't know how you got to think about any of this.

grin

Good Luck to Nigerians
