A man identified as a USA federal air marshall has been quarantined in Houston after he was injected with a syringe full of an unknown substance inside Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, Nigeria.

The man reported the attack, which occurred in an unsecured, public area of the terminal, and the FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating.
The man was able to board United Flight 143 and landed in Houston early Monday morning where he was taken for medical testing

According to ABC News, the man was standing with a group of other air marshals when an assailant injected an unknown substance into the back of one of his arms. The assailant ran off and could not be located after the attack.

The federal air marshall, who has not been named, was immediately quarantined and screened on-scene for Ebola virus, 'out of an abundance of caution,' according to the FBI. The federal air marshall did not immediately display any signs of ill health and was allowed to board the flight he was scheduled to work on.

The syringe was recovered and also taken aboard the flight to be tested in the United States.
U.S. federal air marshals travel incognito, so the assailant would not have been able to identify the victim as a U.S. federal law enforcement agent from his appearance.

'While there is no immediate intelligence to confirm this was a targeted attack, this is our reminder that international cowards will attempt to take sneaky lethal shots at our honorable men and women abroad,' Jon Adler, the national president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, said, reports ABC News.

Joan Rivers has died in a New York hospital today, a week after suffering cardiac arrest during a medical procedure, her daughter said. "She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends," Melissa Rivers said in a written statement.

Rivers, 81, had been on life support at Manhattan's Mount Sinai hospital, where she was taken after she stopped breathing at the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic last Thursday.

The legendary comedienne was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital a week ago after going into cardiac arrest during an outpatient procedure on her vocal chords at another clinic, which is now under investigation.

She has been at the center of American entertainment since her breakthrough in 1965 when she broke through on the Tonight Show. The mother of one, daughter Melissa, and doting grandmother to Melissa’s son, Cooper has most recently hosted Fashion Police on the E! network.

'It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,’ Melissa Rivers said in a statement released to the press Thursday.

‘She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

Senegal has recorded its first case of Ebola in an outbreak that is ravaging its West African neighbors, the Ministry of Health said today. The infected person is a young man from Guinea, Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters.

Guinean health services had reported on Wednesday “the disappearance of a person infected with Ebola who reportedly travelled to Senegal”, Senegalese health minister Awa Marie Coll-Seck said.

She said the infected patient was a young Guinean man who was immediately quarantined at a Dakar hospital, where he was in a “satisfactory condition”.

The minister said “plans were being reinforced to prevent the disease from spreading from this major case”.

The patient is a university student in Conakry who had disappeared three weeks ago from the Guinean capital. Authorities are trying to piece together where he went, and all the people he encountered.

It is the first case of Ebola in Senegal, which has claimed more than 1,500 lives in four other west African nations — Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria.

The World Health Organization has warned that the outbreak is worsening and offered new evidence of its acceleration Friday, saying the past week has seen the highest increase of cases since the outbreak began.

The U.N. health agency has warned that the disease could eventually infect 20,000 people, and unveiled a plan Thursday to stop transmission in the next six to nine months.

Reports have emerged today tracing the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa to one female herbalist in Sierra Leone who claimed she could cure victims of the disease.

The outbreak need never have spread from Guinea, health officials revealed, except for a herbalist in the remote eastern border village of Sokoma.

'She was claiming to have powers to heal Ebola. Cases from Guinea were crossing into Sierra Leone for treatment,' said Mohamed Vandi, the top medical official in the hard-hit district of Kenema.

'She got infected and died. During her funeral, women around the other towns got infected.'

Ebola has killed more than 1,350 people since it emerged in southern Guinea at the start of the year, spreading first to Liberia and cutting a gruesome and gory swathe through eastern Sierra Leone since May.

Beyonce has given fans an early Christmas treat by releasing her new album today with zero notice. The album called Beyonce was released on iTunes and features Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Her speech about feminism and the roles women play in the society were used in the track.

The self-titled album has 14 new tracks including guest mumbles from daughter Blue Ivy on Blue as well as contributions from Jay Z, Kelly Rowland, Frank Ocean, Drake, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Michelle Williams, Justin Timberlake, and Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche.

"I didn't want to release my music the way I've done it," Beyonce said in a press release for the record. "I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There's so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready and from me to my fans."

The new album also has a video for each track, including footage filmed in Sydney.

A former Nigeria international and former Premier League star has been arrested over shock match-fixing claims.

Ex-Portsmouth star Sam Sodje and his brother Stephen were held by cops investigating football corruption.
The arrests came after Sodje, 34, was filmed claiming he could arrange for players to pick up yellow cards in exchange for cash.
Nigeria-born Sodje demanded £30,000 for a booking and £50,000 for a player to get a red card during a match.

He even claimed he punched a player in the groin during a match to be deliberately sent off - and pick up a £70,000 bung.
The former Reading and Brentford defender also boasted that he could rig Premier League and World Cup games.
He said some African players could be easily tempted because they do not get paid much to represent their national teams.

The brothers were arrested by detectives from the National Crime Agency at their homes in Abbeywood, south London.
Cops were seen carrying away evidence, including a desktop computer, from Stephen’s £120,000 home.

Oldham Athletic star Cristian Montano, 21, was also filmed discussing match-fixing in the sting.
He was caught on tape apologising for failing to pick up a booking for cash during a game.
Another of Sodje’s brothers, Akpo, 33, who plays for Tranmere Rovers, was also captured discussing spot-fixing.

A third man was arrested in connection with the case today but police refused to reveal if it was Montano or Akpo.

Sodje told an undercover investigator that he had “sorted” one former Premier League player to deliberately pick up a booking.
He said the star, who cannot be named, received £30,000 in exchange for the yellow card during a Championship match.

“This guy came to meet me at my house and it was sorted,” boasted the former Nigeria international.
“That’s how easy it is - it’s nothing. The booking one is easy. You just push someone, swear at the referee, kick the ball away.

“A yellow card is a standard thing. No one would even be suspicious.”

Sodje allegedly demanded a Rolex watch and a Range Rover for acting as “fixer” for the dodgy deal.
He said he picked up £70,000 after deliberately getting sent off while playing for Portsmouth earlier this year.
The player received a red card after punching Oldham’s Jose Baxter twice in the crotch.

Sodje also claimed he could rig Premier League games and had discussed match-fixing with several top names.

Montano was filmed apologising to Sodje after failing to get booked in the first half of a clash between Oldham and Wolves.

An NCA spokeswoman confirmed the arrests and said they were working closely with the FA and Gambling Commission.
“Three people are in custody and are being questioned by NCA officers,” she said. “We cannot comment further at this stage.”

“Our black women are getting weaves trying to be something and someone they are not. Be real with yourself is all I’m saying” said Pastor Aamir.

Pastor Aamir admits he was raised in a strict household. His mother and father are members of the Islamic faith. At 39 years old, he leads a congregation whose average age is 22.

The diagram shows how wearing high heels places excess force on the inside of the knee - a common site of osteoarthritis among women.One study found that knee joint pressure increased by as much as 26 per cent when a woman wears heels.

The height of your heels and a narrow toebox can create a thickening of tissue around a nerve between the third and fourth toes, which can lead to pain and numbness in the toes called Morton's neuroma.

Consultant podiatrist Mike O'Neill, from the College of Podiatry, recently warned that squeezing feet into smaller shoes can also cause long-term damage including arthritis, stress fractures, and trapped nerves, which may even require surgery or steroid injections.

The research also highlights an issue they have dubbed 'pump bump'- caused by the rigid backs or straps of high heels which irritate the heel and create a bony enlargement also known as Haglund's deformity.

Ankle injuries are also a huge cause for concern as high heels impair balance and a wearer is therefore at greater risk of falling, which could lead to a sprained or broken ankle.

And it seems that younger women are most at risk as a study found that the younger the woman, the higher their heels.

Roughly 20 per cent of those aged 18 to 24 own a pair of six-inch high heeled shoes. This compares with 10 per cent of those aged 25 to 34 and just 3 per cent of 35 to 44 year olds.

And it isn't just your feet and legs that are suffering as a result of vertiginous footwear.
Spindly stilettos also put strain on your posture by pushing the centre of mass in the body forward, taking the hips and spine out of alignment, as well as putting excess pressure on the forefoot.

Mr O'Neill said: 'There's absolutely no doubt women who wear high heels are putting themselves at risk of permanent injury in the name of fashion. Given a choice between a stylish pair of shoes or nice feet, many will go for the stylish shoes.


'However, the higher the heel, the more they tilt your body forward and the more you have to lean back to compensate. This can put your pelvis out of alignment and cause compression of the spine.

'High heels ram your foot forward, which squishes your toes together and can cause ingrown toe nails, rough areas of skin, blemishes, and calluses.
'And because your toes are squashed, the moisture gets trapped, causing soggy toes, which is a breeding ground for athlete's foot.'

Nigeria’s commercial capital, LAGOS, is on the verge of joining the country’s oil-producing states with the discovery of crude oil in commercial quantities in the coastal state.

Yesterday, Afren Plc and its partner, Lekoil Limited, announced significant oil discovery offshore Dahomey Basin in Lagos, according to the London Stock Exchange.

In separate announcements, the partners said they discovered a significant light oil accumulation based on the results of drilling and wire line logs from a high impact Ogo-1 well, located on the Oil Prospecting Licence, OPL 310 offshore Nigeria.

Afren is optimistic that the discovery is likely to be significantly higher than the anticipated 78 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe), which encourages search to further high potential zones.

The discovery is subject to the authentication of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), which is expected in two weeks.

If certified and the partners produce the first barrel of oil, Lagos will become the 11th oil producing state in Nigeria, a club Anambra State joined recently. It will also boost the economy of Lagos, which currently generates about N29 billion internally every month.

The other oil producing states are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Abia, Imo, Edo and Cross River.

Geological studies indicate that the Dahomey Basin is a combination of inland/coastal/offshore basin that cuts across some West African countries including Lagos, Nigeria as well as Southeastern Ghana, Togo and the Republic of Benin.

The basin is said to be separated from the Niger Delta by a surface basement popularly called the Okitipupa Ridge.

“The Ogo-1 well has been drilled to a total measured depth of 10,518 ft (10,402 ft true vertical depth sub sea), and has encountered a gross hydrocarbon section of 524 ft, with 216 ft of net stacked pay.

“The well was targeting 78 mmboe of gross P50 prospective resources, but based on evidence to date, targeted resources are likely to be significantly in excess of previous estimates,” Afren said in a statement made available to Vanguard.

The company added that “further evaluation using wire line log analysis is currently underway prior to extending the well to a total measured depth of 11,800 ft (11,684 ft true vertical depth sub sea) to target further high potential zones.”

Michael Jackson's daughter Paris rushed to hospital after 'attempted suicide'
Paris Jackson was rushed to hospital in the early hours of Wednesday amid reports of an attempted suicide.

Her mother Debbie Rowe is understood to have confirmed the reports to Entertainment Tonight and said the 15-year-old is currently at a Los Angeles hospital.

A lawyer for Katherine Jackson, Paris’ grandmother, also appeared to confirm the suicide bid.
'She's suffered with the loss of her father,' the lawyer told the New York Daily News. 'But we don't know what she was exposed to that precipitated this.'

Paris, the daughter of the late Michael Jackson, was taken from her Calabasas family home on a stretcher at around 2am and conveyed to a nearby hospital, according to TMZ.

The website said the caller reported a possible overdose - although another source said the teenager had cut herself multiple times on one of her wrists.

The incident unfolded just hours after the teenager posted a series of alarming messages on Twitter.

Around midnight she recited the sorrowful Beatles’ song Yesterday to her million plus followers, writing: 'Yesterday, all my troubles seem so far away, now it looks as though they’re here to stay.’

An hour previously, she posted: 'I wonder why tears are salty.'

The 911 call came in at 1.27am local time, according to TMZ and the website reports Paris is now 'doing ok'.

Paris’s mother Debbie told Entertainment Tonight how her daughter is going through a difficult time at present and 'has a lot going on'.

The teen was listed as a potential witness in a massive lawsuit currently being brought by the Jackson family against AEG – the concert promoters behind her late father Michael’s doomed tour This Is It.

The Court of Appeal in Lagos today set aside the N25 million compensatory damages earlier awarded Lagos comedian, Babatunde Omidina " Baba Suwe " over a prolonged detention by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) last year.

In the ruling, the Court of Appeal re-affirmed the right of the NDLEA to investigate, arrest, detain and prosecute drug suspects as long as the agency acts within the law.

The court said the NDLEA had not violated Mr. Omidina's rights because it sought and got court orders from the federal high court to keep him in custody after the arrested him on the suspicion that he had ingested hard drugs.

The Court of Appeal came down heavily on the Lagos High court judge that awarded the damages against the NDLEA, describing the decision as oppressive and burdensome to an agency of government carrying out its statutory duties.

Baba Suwe's attorneys led by civil rights activist, Bamidele Aturu, has vowed to take the matter before the Supreme Court.

LinkedIn just changed its privacy policy and user agreement and now explicitly bans escorts from using the site to get clients. The new user agreement states that you must not: “Create profiles or provide content that promotes escort services or prostitution” even if prostitution is legal where you live.

LinkedIn has always prohibited “unlawful” profiles and that this change in its user agreement just makes prostitution more explicitly prohibited, since prostitution is legal in some parts of the world.

If you thought that this change in policy was perhaps just some sort of formality, think again. There really are prostitutes using LinkedIn to make connections. A quick search reveals there are a whole lot of “escorts” and professionals who offer “nude massage.”

Not only can you list “prostitution” as a skill, you can list a whole lot of other unsavory skills like “rape,” “shoplifting,” “gangs,” “manslaughter,” and “drug trafficking.” People can also endorse you for those skills. It should be noted that many of the people who list “prostitution” in their skills are people working to combat prostitution and human trafficking.

Angelina Jolie has revealed she has had a preventative double mastectomy after tests showed she had an 87% chance of contracting breast cancer.
The actress made the decision to undergo the procedure in February after learning that she is a carrier of the BRCA1 cancer gene.

The 37-year-old's mother Marcheline Bertrand died at the age of 56 from ovarian cancer, which Angelina revealed she has a 50% chance of contracting.

Writing in an editorial piece entitled 'My Medical Choice' in the New York Times, Angelina said: 'My doctors estimated that I had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.
'Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65% risk of getting it, on average.

'Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.
'I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.

'My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer

WHAT IS A PREVENTATIVE MASTECTOMY?
Preventive mastectomy is the surgical removal of one or both breasts. It is done to prevent or reduce the risk of breast cancer in women who are at high risk of developing the disease.

In a total mastectomy, doctors remove the entire breast and nipple, while in a subcutaneous mastectomy, the doctor removes the breast tissue but leaves the nipple intact.

Existing data suggests that the treatment may significantly reduce the chances of developing tumors by about 90per cent.

Many choose to have breast reconstruction to restore the shape of the breast following surgery.

Sir Alex Ferguson has announced he will retire as Manchester United manager after 27 years at the club, moving upstairs to be a member of the board. It is a day that will redefine the landscape of British football.

Announcing the news, he said: 'The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.

'It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. Everton manager David Moyes has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed the Scot while Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is also among the favourites to take over at Old Trafford.

The announcement of Ferguson’s decision to quit came after intense speculation following a golf match between United players and coaches at Dunham Massey on Tuesday.

Ferguson has long been planning for his succession and has consistently cited his health as the decisive factor in the timing of his retirement. He had a pacemaker fitted in 2004 and United confirmed last week that he would undergo hip surgery in August.

David Gill’s decision to stand down as chief executive this summer also sees Ferguson lose a close ally within the club and there have been suggestions that he came close to quitting at the end of last season losing out on the Premier League title to rivals Manchester City.

Ferguson won his 13th league title this year and has previously expressed his regret over announcing his retirement before the end of the 2001-02, which he felt led to poor on-pitch performances and resulted in a U-turn after he had a change of heart.

You may soon have to pay to watch videos on YouTube.

The video site, owned by Google, is set to launch a paid-for subscription service later this week that will charge users to access content on some of its specialist channels.

According to reports in the Financial Times, a single-channel subscription is expected to cost £1.28 ($1.99) a month and will apply to as many as 50 YouTube channels.

Paying customers will be able to get access to exclusive videos, TV shows and films from select specialist channels.

Paying a subscription may also remove adverts from free videos.
YouTube revamped the site and introduced channels in December 2011.
In October 2012, the site launched 60 partner channels, including BBC Worldwide On Earth, ITN, the Jamie Oliver Food Channel and Mixmag TV.

Other partners include Channel 4 and Film 4, Howcast and The Onion.
It is not yet known which of these partner channels will be included in YouTube's subscription service when it launches.

A 'person familiar with the plans' told the FT that the channels will show archived content or exclusive previews and clips.
The extra money is also expected to fund new TV and film shows that will be shown exclusively online.

Paid-for subscriptions are an alternative way for YouTube to make money, in addition to its advertising revenues.

The new channels have helped expand YouTube’s audience to 1bn users who watch 6bn hours of video each month.

You can already subscribe to get updates from channels for free.

YouTube hasn't confirmed the paid-for subscription plans, but a Google spokesman said: 'We're looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our creators with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer.'

Rumours about paid-for subscriptions began in January when AdAge reported YouTube had been in touch with a 'small group of channel producers'.

A woman has been left a multiple amputee following back-alley cosmetic surgery that went horrifically wrong.

April Brown suffered life threatening infections after having silicone implants injected into her buttocks.

The procedure was carried out by an unlicenced practitioner in Los Angeles, she said, with complications leading to several stints as a hospital inpatient.

Brown now hopes to become a motivational speaker having survived her ordeal

It was during those hospitalisations that she suffered the agonising infections.
‘I got the butt implants eight years ago,’ she told NBC. ‘For five years, I lived in pain. Excruciating pain.’

The mother-of-two said that the back-alley procedure was carried out at a ‘pumping party’ by a back-alley doctors.

‘They call it medical grade silicone,’ she said, ‘but a lot of it is industrial grade silicone.’
Last year Brown’s health deteriorated to the point that she was left with no choice but to have all of her limbs removed.

Once a cosmetologist and fashion designer, Brown hopes to get through her devastating ordeal and begin a new career as a motivational speaker.
She said she credits her words of her family and friends for giving her the strength and will to survive, adding: ‘We don't validate each other.

'We really don't know how our friends feel about us, unless we have very expressive friends.’In the past year, several cases of illegal butt-injections have come up.
Among the notorious figures was Kimberly Smedley, 45, who pleaded guilty in March to charges she operated an illegal butt-injection practice out of hotel rooms in Baltimore, Washington, Detroit, Philadelphia and New York.She kept the silicone in a water jug for the procedures - and used 'super glue with cotton balls to prevent silicone leaking out' of the women's flesh.

Smedley was investigated last year after one woman fell seriously ill from receiving silicone injections.
She was arrested at a hotel in Washington D.C. as she was preparing to see customers for treatments.

Smedley, who faces five years in prison, will be sentenced in July.
Illegal silicone injections, often used by sex workers and those in the transgender community to alter their appearance, are incredibly dangerous and can even be life-threatening.

A HEARTBROKEN dad cradles his 18-month-old daughter, who suffers from a rare disorder which has caused her head to swell up three times its normal size.
Roona Begum, from Agartala, in north eastern India has hydrocephalus - a build up cerebrospinal fluid inside her skull.

Sufferers experience loss of coordination and speech and in long-term cases it can result in mental disability and death.

A treatment is available, in which doctors drain the fluid, but it isn't available on India's version of the NHS.

Roona's dad, 26-year-old Abdul Rahman, earns less than £2 a day working in a brick factory and can't afford to pay for her to be treated privately.

India's rural development minister bitterly criticised the country's public health system in a speech last November - claiming the government was failing to provide enough help for the poor.

Former British prime minister, Baroness Margaret Hilda Thatcher has died after suffering from a stroke. Mrs. Thatcher's death was announced today in London by her spokesperson, Lord Bell.

The former PM was 87 years old and is survived by Mark Thatcher and Carol Thatcher.
