Education / Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Pre-degree Admission Form For 2023/2024 Is Out! by InsideOAU: 5:31pm On May 12, 2023
The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) invites qualified candidates to her 2023/2024 academic session pre-degree programme admission exercise. OAU pre-degree programme normally runs for two (2) contact periods, both within nine (9) calendar months.

OAU Pre-degree programme is designed to be an intensive coaching curriculum aimed at preparing senior high school graduates (senior secondary) for university education.

Given the prevalence of deficiencies students carried over from secondary schools, OAU Pre-degree programme helps students deal with the setbacks that often accompany such circumstances by providing them with a good head-start which will facilitate superior academic performance in the university.

OAU Pre-degree Background

With the introduction of the course unit system in Nigerian Universities in the 1977/78 Session the concessional examination was abolished in 1978 and admission to Universities became centralized through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Well, over one million applicants seek admission every year into universities which now have a capacity of about 250,000. The competition is quite stiff and good preparation will result in better performance by the students.

This background establishes the need for a Pre-degree Programme in the arts and the sciences that would serve as a platform to equip prospective students for university admission, give them a good head-start, and promote superior studentship in the university.

OAU Pre-Degree Philosophy

In accordance with the vision and objectives of the University, it is believed that the Pre-degree programme will promote individual self-development and remedy the deficiencies carried over from the secondary school in the ability to speak, read and write and to receive instruction in order to successfully undertake a university programme.

OAU Pre-Degree Programme Structure

The Pre-degree programme is an intensive coaching curriculum to prepare high school graduates for university work. The courses of study which are those of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subjects include English Language which is compulsory for all students, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Government, Literature in English and Religious Studies. Students are required to choose three (3) subjects in addition to English Language . The curriculum is structured into two contact periods each of 18 weeks with four contact hours per week for each subject. There is a three-week break between the first and second contact periods and one week of examination at the end each contact period.

Programme Description

The programme is an intensive coaching curriculum aims at ensuring adequate exposure to fundamentals of concepts and preparation of eligible students for University admission and a good head-start for University work. The courses of study which are those of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subjects include English Language which is compulsory for all students, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Government, English Literature and Religious Studies. Students are required to choose three subjects in addition to English.

An overall score of 60% and above in the examinations and continuous assessment (comprising regular tests, assignments and the end of Contact period examination) is required to be qualified for consideration for admission into Year 1 of the relevant degree programmes of the University. Admission is based strictly on merit and entry requirements and in proportion to the admission quota of the University for the various Faculties.

It is worthy of note that the O. A. U. Pre-degree programme, as presently operated, surpasses the minimum expectations of quality as approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The programme also promotes individual self-development and remedies the deficiencies carried over from the secondary school in the ability to speak, read and write and to receive instruction in order to successfully undertake a University programme.

Students are admitted into the Pre-degree programme under the following broad options and subject combinations:

Education / Oauhistory – How The Famous “motion Ground” In OAU Got Its Name by InsideOAU: 2:43pm On Apr 10, 2023

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M0EmVV6_Tc&t=5s

Obafemi Awolowo University remains one of the best universities in Nigeria and in the world at large, especially when it comes to unmatched architectural complexities. Take a look at some astonishing structures, including but not limited to these structures with names called, Senate building, Spider, Pharmacy building, AJOSE LECTURE Theater, Natural Museum, and so on.
Apart from its unique structures, there are other breathtaking layouts, gardens, and the likes which are most pleasing to the eyes and for relaxation. One notable place in OAU which is cool to relax and popular is the OAU motion ground. Virtually every single OAU student and staff knows about motion ground considering its reputation and location. Everyone knows it’s called motion ground, but only a few actually know why? If I may ask, do you know why? If you don’t, I will tell you the story behind it.

Let’s take you back to the 90s, the white and black era, Afro hair culture, long and baggy trousers, and any other old-school lifestyle you can think of. This period goes close to 30 years after the inception of the university.

So, back in the days there was this special camera that could take pictures when people are in motion, walking, running and performing certain actions. The camera was very popular and was always around what is now called motion ground today.

Ladies happen to love the camera so much, you know, ladies love to get themselves behind the lens to show their beauty. They were also the best customers for the camera as they purchased it a lot. So, similar to when an average person passes through motion ground today and the passport vendors keep calling “passport, passport, passport” and trying all ways to persuade you to get a passport so also, so it was called, “motion, motion, motion…” Hence, the name motion ground today.

Now that you know the true story behind motion ground, so if you’ve ever wondered the reason behind the name, let’s know what reasons you’ve thought of in the comment box below, we’ll love to hear from you.

Education / The Untold Story About July 10, 1999 On OAU Campus – Afrika’s Bravery by InsideOAU: 3:18pm On Jul 10, 2022
July 10 is one of the most popular dates on OAU campus, infact if as an OAU student you have no idea what July 10 is, I think your studentship should be questioned. That date should always ring a bell, everywhere you go.

Why is July 10 so popular? Why is everyone talking about July 10, why do we post candles on this day? Sit back and enjoy.

We are celebrating our fallen heroes, George Iwilade popularly known as Afrika, Yemi Ajiteru, Eviano Ekelemu, Babatunde Oke and Efe Ekede. The heroes we lost to the battle of Cultism on OAU campus.

Everytime you see OAU students bragging about walking 2am in the morning without fear, remember, these 5 people died for them. Whenever OAU students voice out in the face of oppression, they don’t want to be cowards, we didn’t lose our five heroes to be cowards.

What led to The July 10 killing?

Without March 7, 1999, there might not be July 10, 1999 killing.

On the 7th day of March, 1999, nine members of cult were arrested by the students’ union in a boy’s quarter of the residence of a university staff on campus. Many dangerous items and uniforms were found in their possession which included submachine guns, AK 47, an axe, ammunition, dagger and local firearms. They confessed to their crime and the student leaders handed them over directly to the police for prosecution (after informing the university authority).

The accused were later charged to the Ile-Ife Magistrate Court on the 23rd day of March, 1999. But, in what could be described as the fastest criminal trial ever, the Magistrate found that the accused had no case to answer and discharged them but ordered that the sub-machine guns, AK 47 and other ammunition seized from them be transferred to the Police armourer and the remaining exhibits were destroyed. The students’ union were not informed by the police, the university was not involved and only the Investigating Police Officer gave evidence.

Who is Afrika?

Afrika, a vibrant and active comrade in the Great Ife Students’ Union who was also the Secretary General of the Union was massacred, the other four died due to gun shot injuries, but our Afrika was butchered.

Series of events before the black day

According to eye-witness reports, some days to the incident, every street light that led from campus gate to academics and halls of residence suddenly stop working. After the incident, the management claimed the streetlights were destroyed. The security unit as well as the management feigned ignorance (if you know OAU campus, you’ll know no one can destroy the street lights from campus gate to academics without getting caught, it’s very impossible)

Few days to the incident as well, a huge amount of money was withdrawn out of the institution’s account, without proper records. The bursar who initiated the withdrawal claimed to have disbursed the funds N350,000 (Imagine, 350k in 1999) for “security needs” and the funds were handed over to the Vice-Chancellor’s right hand man, Femi Idowu. During inquiry, one of cult boys, Efosa Idahosa confessed that they received that amount from the University. Remember, Wale Omole, the then VC was suspected to be a godfather to cultists.

The black day – July 10, 1999.

July 10, 1999 was a black day in the history of Great Ife, the entirety of Great Ife mourned!

The day of the incident, Afrika, who was supposed to be inducted as a Kegite went to rest after a long week, he instructed people around to wake him when induction starts properly. Females used to have access to every halls of residence, regardless of time, in the middle of the night, a student suspected to be working for Wale Omole rushed into Awo hall to inform Afrika and Olanrewaju Adeleke popularly known as Legacy (the then Students’ Union President) that a strike was about to happen, Afrika was dead asleep, Legacy was no where to be found, she ran back to her hostel.

If you’re really familiar will halls of residence, you will know that 4 people in a room in male hostel is almost impossible. Afrika had slept with a squatter they called friend, not knowing he was a spy for Wale Omole, as soon as the strike was about to happen, the squatter ran to Fajuyi hall and left Afrika all alone in the room. The shooting started from the lawn that leads to rooms that was where the remaining 4 were killed and Afrika, in the room.

Lanre Legacy’s alleged disappearance

Lanre Legacy didn’t disappear as claimed by many stories, he was held back by a friend when he wanted to rush out, that was what saved him from the death that came knocking, Legacy saw the killers even though it was dark and late. According to him, he still saw one of the masterminds of the attack sometime in 2018 at the airport.

After the black day…

The case was reported in the police station, but unfortunately, the cultists had the backing of the powers and principalities and they were discharged and acquitted alongside Wale Omole.

The death of Afrika shook the whole country that people came from far and near to Ile-Ife in mourn and demand justice. Well, the deed has been done, our heroes have fallen, but they live forever!

We join the entirety of Great Ife in remembering our heroes that didn’t die in vain.
Wherever you are always Say No To Cultism.

This story was written based on what the Author can remember after listening to Olanrewaju Adeleke (Legacy), Students’ Union President 1998/99 testimony at the 19th year remembrance of the 5 heroes.

Education / Osun Worshippers Storm The Senate Building To Protest Against The New VC by InsideOAU: 1:26pm On Mar 21, 2022
Following the appointment of the New VIce chancellor,Professor Simeo Bamire, there has been an uproar among Ife indigenes. They claim an Ife indigene has never emerged as the Vice chancellor of the university and for this reason, they decided to put up a dramatic protest. We could recall that the protest began the very minute Professor Simeo Bamire was appointed as the new VC .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtCSHEOu000

As seen in the video above , ife indigenes aren’t here to joke. After various forms of protest they have finally aggravated the situation of things by summoning the gods. For a moment we thought , the legendary film maker Kunle Afoloyan was shooting another Epic Yoruba drama or probably dramatic arts students were staging their rehearsal openly. Unfortunately this is no movie, but a real life situation.

Earlier today , Inside OAU Media reported that ife indigenes blocked all gates and aren’t allowing anyone in or out of campus . We implore everyone of us to stay at our various places of residence till everything dies down.

UPDATES ABOUT HERITAGE AJIBOLA

Heritage Ajibola, the Linguistics and African Languages student who accidentally fell into the soakaway this afternoon at Bver Hostel, Maintenance Hostels, is confirmed dead!

This incident is highly unfortunate. The Union mourns her. May her soul rest in peace. May God give her family, friends and course mates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

It must be noted that Heritage's death was avoidable if the soakaway system was properly constructed and covered. It is saddening that this has happened despite the huge amounts of money paid by students for rent. The Management of the Hostel must answer for the death of Heritage. The Union is immediately demanding justice for Heritage, with a view to forestalling a possible reoccurrence of this.

Education / Re: 2021 UTME: JAMB Urges Candidates To Complete Registration June 15 by InsideOAU: 8:32am On Jun 14, 2021

Education / 2021 UTME: JAMB Urges Candidates To Complete Registration June 15 by InsideOAU: 8:30am On Jun 14, 2021
The UTME candidates who have not registered but have secured the profile codes and initiated the registration process are expected to visit specially designated registration centres to complete the registration.

Following the announcement of another two-week extension of registration deadline for candidates who had commenced the registration process for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) before May 29, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged the cleared applicants to complete their registration before June 15.

The examination body, in a statement issued on Monday morning, said from 12 noon on Monday, the details of the special centres where the affected applicants will complete their registration would be sent to them through their mobile lines.

The statement, which was signed by the examination body’s head of public affairs and protocol, Fabian Benjamin, also noted that the same message would be available on JAMB’s website for the concerned applicants.

It, however, noted that only the applicants who have successfully secured their profile codes should expect the message, adding that those whose profile codes were yet to be generated have had their details forwarded to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

NIMC is the body in charge of the creation of the unique identity number which has been made a mandatory registration requirement for 2021 UTME.

The statement by JAMB is reproduced below:

COMPLETION OF 2021 UTME/DE REGISTRATION FOR CANDIDATES WHO DID NOT REGISTER WITHIN THE STIPULATED TIME AND THE EXTENSION PERIOD

At the end of the period originally scheduled for the 2021/2022 UTME/DE registration on the 15th May,2021, the registration period was extended by another two weeks up to the 29th of May, 2021 to accommodate candidates who, largely due to issues related with newly introduced pre-requisite of National Identification Number(NIN) could not register.

Additional extension of two weeks was made to compile the list of all prospective candidates who for any reason were unable to register.

Education / Two OAU Students Commit Suicide by InsideOAU: 4:05pm On Apr 20, 2021
The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community has been thrown into mourning mood following the death of two undergraduate from the faculty of Administration.

A 200 level student of Business administration Department, identified as Emmanuel, allegedly drank a poisonous substance called “sniper” to end his own life.

Inside OAU media gathered that the deceased was rushed to OAU health centre via an ambulance, but he was brought in dead; had given up the ghost.

It was also reported that another part 4 student of OAU, from the department of management and accounting, faculty of administration, whose name hasn’t been known yet, committed suicide earlier today and was rushed to the health centre. Unfortunately, his life was also lost in the process.

This has led to a protest on OAU campus this morning as students find it very strange and sudden.

The entire member of Inside OAU Innovation expresses our condolences to the family of the deceased, course mates and the students of OAU campus. May the Lord grant the ability to bear the loss.

These are breathtaking pictures of arguably the most beautiful campus in the whole of Africa . A campus filled with life action of so many students passion. While some students walk on their campus streets with fear of cultist attack we stride with great pride guided by the phrase “Say No To Cultism” a fight well fought along with a dream well sought after which earned us our peace. It aint about the learning alone but the fun that comes with a well balanced social life under the intoxicating influence of a rich culture.. Despite our struggles we’ll forever remain humble and will remain strong(or never crumble) like our concrete walls.
