I was speaking with a young man one day and while we were discussing, I could see he was depressed and feeling stuck in a job he doesn't get much from. He felt he has not achieved anything. I asked him, "If you were given one million naira now, what would you do with it?" He was silent for a while after which he said, "I don't know." I made it clear to him that his major problem then was clarity about his goal and not capital for business like he thought. If he got the capital in the state that he was, he was more likely to waste it.

Before you can talk about achieving something, you ought to be clear about what it is you want to achieve. What you want to achieve should be related to the future you want to have, hence, you also have to be clear about your desired future.

If you do not understand where you are and where you are going, you are most likely not attempting the actions that will make your life as valuable as possible. Consequently, things will be happening to you - things that are not so good. Rather than that happening, you can make things happen and I can help.

I have designed an exercise, the Meaningful Future Exercise (MFE), that helps you come up with a vision of the future you will like to have. Inclusive in this future are goals related to your future. In the exercise that involves series of steps, you will also come up with strategies to achieve your goals.

Life is suffering

"Life is joy." You must have heard that.

But life is also suffering and not talking about suffering does not exclude you from experiencing it. If you are reading this text, you must have experienced suffering. You may even be suffering now.

Those not suffering now can have themselves or their loved ones suffering later. This is not a wish. This is how life goes.

Life is suffering. We suffer not just because "politicians are corrupt" or "the system is rigged" or because in one way or another, you and I can refer to ourselves as victims. A good amount of suffering is guaranteed because we are humans.

School is hard. So is work, raising children, sickness, and death.

If you have not suffered at all raise your hand.

Drop Ideologies

What is an ideology?

It is a simple idea that comes is the guise of philosophy or science and claims to explain the complex problems of the world and offer solutions that will solve them.

An ideologue is someone who claims to know how to make the world a better place before he sets his own life in order. The identity of a warrior which their ideology gives them helps cover the chaos within them.

Ideologies are not true knowledge even as they claim to be. Ideologues in power are dangerous. The twentieth century is filled with the horrors ideologies can bring. We can't afford to have another experiment with ideologies and ideologues.

When the ideas of ideologues fail to fly, they do not blame themselves but blame everyone who sees through the simplification that accompanies their ideologies.

Flee from ideologies.

One out of three people that should be employed is not employed.

Let us help ourselves the way we can.

If you have been reading motivational books for sometime but have not achieved anything worthwhile, you may want to consider leaving motivational books.

Whatever is based on positive illusions won't take you far. Rather than positive illusions, go for what will make your life more meaningful.

Life is hard. There are things that want to do you in. But if you have meaning, you are predisposed to be the hero you are meant to be. A hero that confronts chaos to bring order.

Why Rules?

People may not like rules. "Why rules? We don't want to be restricted. We want to be free to do whatever we choose."

But the story of the golden calf in the Bible teaches us something deep and true you may not have realized. The people, in exercising their freedom, allowed their unregulated behaviour to make them worship a man-made golden calf.

If you leave yourself to uninformed judgement, you are most likely to aim low and worship things that are beneath you. Your animalistic tendencies can take over in an uncontrolled manner. There is nothing freeing about becoming a slave to your passion as a result of no rules.

For your own good give yourself rules if you have none. If you are not able to do that you may want to get rules from intelligent, well-informed, productive individuals living a meaningful life. Good rules raise your standards as they elevate your gaze.

The best rules do not restrict you but helps you in living a richer, fuller, and freer life.
