Celebrities / The Art Of The Nonsense Remix: The Case Of Davido And Osinachi by investigator: 2:09pm On Feb 02, 2016
Article written by entertainment journalist, Chilee Agunana

The remix has always been a popular part of the music industry and adds a different flavour to an already good song or gives a new lease of life to a song that initially did not perform so well. A remix simply means another artist’s version of a song where he or she must have added something to it. And while the remix mustn’t necessarily be better, it largely involves an ‘addition’ to the original song rather than removing ‘something’ from it.
That being said, some of the songs remixed in this country in recent times have actually removed `things’ from the original songs and one xample of this is Davido’s remix of Humblesmith’s Osinachi.
The young singer had already introduced himself to the Nigerian music audience with Chairmo and then in August 2015 dropped a career-defining single which he titled, Osinachi, featuring Phyno.
The song was an immediate hit and the fact it combined excellent Hip Hop elements with didactic lyrics was a plus and in that regard somehow similar to Korede Bello’s Godwin which led to the latter’s controversial invitation to some church programmes. Osinachi had an even cleaner claim to church performances but Humblesmith may have closed that door by allowing Davido to burden it with his Dubai- infected baggage.
Osinachi, an Igbo word, literally means ‘It’s from God’ and can be figuratively adapted to mean `Destiny’ or ‘blessing’. It’s also a beautiful name which many parents have gladly bestowed on their offsprings just like Godwin. A look at the original lyrics makes for an interesting read and further highlighted the very essence of the song as originally composed:
Plenty people don dey ask, Na which baba do the jazz, Say the baba do well for me oh, Now my life don better Not because I suffer pass Not because I pray and fast No be osho no be jazz, okwa chinenye
Also look at Phyno’s verse with some loose translation provided in brackets:
Ibe, ekene kenelum olisa bi ne nu igwe (Greetings to God in heaven) Daddy ne mezi nu m obi oma (Daddy has made me happy) Nwanne inee aya, n’ime ndum o (Brother if you look into my life) Iga fu na chukwu emego nu aka boys achaa (You will see God has blessed boys) God I dey beg you don't leave me oh Okwa ikwelu nkwa si na ima rapum oo (Remember you promised you won’t leave me) Baba obi ni'gwe o-oo-o (Father in heaven) Wee simu golibe oooo (Told me to enjoy) Hey, nwanne okwa ima na oke chineke di okpotopo (Brother you know God’s grace is big) Amamihe gi kam choro (I want your wisdom) Maka m di ogogoro (Because I’m empty) Some dey think say na jazz how the boy came up fast Mana ha maro na ngozi gi na di ogonogo (But they don’t know you blessing is long) Okwa, everyday nne kpe ekpere (I pray every day) Chineke iwee nyemu the reason m ji enye ekele (God you gave me to give thanks) Now m nanwuli with my family and friends (Now I’m rejoicing with family and friends) Ayin n’eme the money down ka (We are doing the money down like) Nwanne oburo jazz (Brother it’s not jazz)
The lyrics of Davido's remix is a sharp and confused contrast that not only presents a total deviation from the initial spirit of the song but also reduced it to a platform for advancing some personal issues which is a complete let-down to such a beautiful song.
My humble father sinachi My loving daughter sinachi mo My baby mama sinachi Dele Momodu sinachi mo No be by force to go Dubai Abi na wetin cause the fight And I just dey my own dey laugh eh Because God dey my side They want to take away my favour They want to spoil my career Them no know say I get flavour You fit ask Nabania I forgive and forget Baba God knows the best My papa just buy jet And about to take off everywhere oh
Humblesmith in allowing this remix may have mortgaged his immediate progress for a few coins from the Omo Baba Olowo as this remix has stunted his immediate growth because, one, it removed attention from the main song which was doing marvellously well and redirected it to Davido. Secondly what Davido brought to the song was immediately expendable as the Baby mama drama while being stupidly negative and shouldn’t even come close to a song like Osinachi, it died once Davido moved on from it and in this sense, the Sony signing immediately took over the Davido narrative and Humblesmith is now left with the few Judas coins he made from betraying such a good song.
Apart from being one of the most hardworking and talented artists in the country, Davido is also one of the most mischievous—scheming out one publicity scheme (positive and negative in same measure) immediately after the other, and the narrative of Humblesmith’s career as regards the traction he would have gained from his hit song has now been subsumed in the shenanigans of an already made act.
This is the danger ‘upcoming’ acts face when they excitedly allow bigger artists to buy into their arrival and remix their already successful songs.
This happened to Kiss Daniels when he allowed Davido once again and Tiwa Savage to guzzle up whatever attention and goodwill he had garnered with his hit, Woju, and his successive attempts to resurrect that success with new singles using virtually the same beat, have largely failed.
Another sad case is Oritsefemi whose struck gold with his version of Fela’s, Double Wahala, but he then allowed a fading D’banj to hijack his song.
Not to mention what D’banj also did to Iyanya’s Kukere but by then, Iyanya had already exhausted the song’s goodwill and revenue, so D’banj’s remix never really affected the success of the song or Iyanya’s progress.
A new ‘upcoming’ artist is supposed to ride on the back of the success of the older artist he features in his song, not the other way round. Naeto C did it for Davido and Phyno has already done it for Humblesmith on the original Osinachi track, so there was no need for this remix, not at this time.
Humblesmith is no doubt a good artist and would most definitely release other good songs who knows how long it will take fortune to smile on him again with another hit seeing that he humbly threw away the `Destiny’ already given to him?

Politics / Obasanjo Writes Letter To Saraki And Dogara, Criticize Them(read HERE) by investigator: 2:14pm On Jan 27, 2016

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has written a letter to the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara criticizing them over the reported plans to buy more cars for each Senator to carry out their legislative duties. In the letter dated January 13th, Obasanjo stated that it was insensitive of the legislators to think of buying more cars considering the critical state of the Nigerian economy. Full text of the letter after the cut…
Distinguished Senator Bukola Saraki
President of the Senate Federal Republic of Nigeria
Senate Chambers Abuja.
Honourable Yakubu Dogara Speaker,
House of Representatives,
National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

It is appropriate to begin this letter, which I am sending to all members of the Senate and the House of Representatives through both of you at this auspicious and critical time, with wishes of Happy New Year to you all. On a few occasions in the past, both in and out of office as the President of Nigeria I have agonised on certain issues within the arms of government at the national level and among the tiers of government as well. Not least, I have reflected and expressed, outspokenly at times, my views on the practice in the National Assembly which detracts from distinguishness and honourability because it is shrouded in opaqueness and absolute lack of transparency and could not be regarded as normal, good and decent practice in a democracy that is supposed to be exemplary.

I am, of course, referring to the issue of budgets and finances of the National Assembly. The present economic situation that the country has found itself in is the climax of the steady erosion of good financial and economic management which grew from bad to worse in the last six years or so. The executive and the legislative arms of government must accept and share responsibility in this regard. And if there will be a redress of the situation as early as possible, the two arms must also bear the responsibility proportionally . The two arms ran the affairs of the country unmindful of the rainy day.

The rainy day is now here. It would not work that the two arms should stand side by side with one arm pulling and without the support of the other one for good and efficient management of the economy. The purpose of election into the Legislative Assembly particularly at the national level is to give service to the nation and not for the personal service and interest of members at the expense of the nation which seemed to have been the mentality, psychology, mindset and practice within the National Assembly since the beginning of this present democratic dispensation. Where is patriotism? Where is commitment? Where is service? The beginning of good governance which is the responsibility of all arms and all the tiers of government is openness and transparency. It does not matter what else we try to do as long as one arm of government shrouds its financial administration and management in opaqueness and practices rife with corruption, only very little, if anything at all, can be achieved in pulling Nigeria on the path of sustainable and enduring democratic system, development and progress. Governance without transparency will be a mockery of democracy.

Let us be more direct and specific so that action can be taken where it is urgently necessary. A situation where our national budget was predicated on $38 per barrel of oil with estimated 2 million barrels per day and before the budget was presented, the price of oil had gone down to $34 per barrel and now hovering around $30 and we have no assurance of producing 2 million barrels and if we can, we have no assurance of finding market for it, definitely calls for caution. If production and price projected on the budget stand, we would have to borrow almost one third of the 6 trillion naira budget. Now beginning with the reality of the budget, there is need for sober reflection and sacrifice with innovation at the level of executive and legislative arms of government. The soberness, the sacrifice and seriousness must be patient and apparent. It must not be seen and said that those who, as leaders, call for sacrifice from the citizenry are living in obscene opulence. It will not only be insensitive but callously so.

It would seem that it is becoming a culture that election into the legislative arm of government at the national level in particular is a licence for financial misconduct and that should not be. The National Assembly now has a unique opportunity of presenting a new image of itself. It will help to strengthen, deepen, widen and sustain our democracy.
By our Constitution, the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission is charged with the responsibility of fixing emoluments of the three arms of government: executive, legislature and judiciary. The Commission did its job but by different disingenuous ways and devices, the legislature had overturned the recommendation of the Commission and hiked up for themselves that which they are unwilling to spelt out in detail, though they would want to defend it by force of arm if necessary. What is that? Mr. President of the Senate and Hon. Speaker of the House, you know that your emolument which the Commission had recommended for you takes care of all your legitimate requirements: basic salary, car, housing, staff, constituency allowance. Although the constituency allowance is paid to all members of the National Assembly, many of them have no constituency offices which the allowance is partly meant to cater for. And yet other allowances and payments have been added by the National Assembly for the National Assembly members’ emoluments. Surely, strictly speaking, it is unconstitutional. There is no valid argument for this except to see it for what it is: law-breaking and impunity by lawmakers.

The lawmakers can return to the path of honour, distinguishness, sensitivity and responsibility. The National Assembly should have the courage to publish its recurrent budgets for the years 2000, 2005, 20 10 and 2015. That is what transparency demands. With the number of legislators not changing, comparison can be made. Comparisons in emoluments can also be made with countries like Ghana, Kenya, Senegal and even Malaysia and Indonesia who are richer and more developed than we are. The budget is a proposal and only an estimate of income and expenditure. Where income is inadequate, expenditure will not be made. While in government, I was threatened with impeachment by the members of the National Assembly for not releasing some money they had appropriated for themselves which were odious and for which there were no incomes to support .

The recent issue of cars for legislators would fall into the same category. Whatever name it is disguised as, it is unnecessary and insensitive. A pool of a few cars for each Chamber will suffice for any Committee Chairman or members for any specific duty. The waste that has gone into cars, furniture, housing renovation in the past was mind-boggling and these were veritable sources of waste and corruption. That was why they were abolished. Bringing them back is inimical to the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians. The way of proposing budget should be for the executive to discuss every detail of the budget, in preparation, with different Committees and sub-Committees of the National Assembly and the National Assembly to discuss its budget with the Ministry of Finance. Then, the budget should be brought together as consolidated budget and formally presented to the National Assembly, to be deliberated and debated upon and passed into law. It would then be implemented as revenues are available.

Where budget proposals are extremely ambitious like the current budget and revenue sources are so uncertain, more borrowing may have to be embarked upon, almost up to 50% of the budget or the budget may be grossly unimplementable and unimplemented. Neither is a choice as both are bad. Management of the economy is one of the key responsibilities of the President as prescribed in the Constitution. He cannot do so if he does not have his hands on the budget. Management of the economy is shared responsibility where the Presidency has the lion share of the responsibility. But if the National Assembly becomes a clog in the wheel, the executive efforts will not yield much reward or progress. The two have to work synchronisingly together to provide the impetus and the conducive environment for the private sector to play its active vanguard role.

Management of the budget is the first step to manage the economy. It will be interesting if the National Assembly will be honourable enough and begin the process of transparency, responsibility and realism by publishing its recurrent budgets for 2016 as it should normally be done. Hopefully, the National Assembly will take a step back and do what is right not only in making its own budget transparent but in all matters of financial administration and management including audit of its accounts by external outside auditor from 1999 to date.

This, if it is done, will bring a new dawn to democracy In Nigeria and a new and better image for the National Assembly and it will surely avoid the Presidency and the National Assembly going into face-off all the time on budgets and financial matters.
While I thank you for your patience and understanding, please accept, Dear Senate President and Honourable Speaker of the House, the assurances of my highest consideration.
Yours sincerely, Olusegun Obasanjo

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Dead Or Alive Not My Business – Okorocha by investigator: 10:40am On Jan 22, 2016

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has denied reports flying in the social media that he called for the hanging of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The governor, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwemeodo, denied knowing Nnamdi Kanu.

He said: “I read about him (Kanu) on the pages of newspapers like every other Igbo man or Nigerian. Whether he lives or dies, does not have any value to add to me.”

The spokesman said if Kanu dies, he (Okorocha) cannot become director of Radio Biafra or IPOB leader. He said those after Okorocha do not know how to approach their media war against him.

“They have no direction. They have no materials. They lack the moral strength. They also lack the spiritual muscle and that is why they will continue to misfire,” he said.

He said that since 2011 when Okorocha became governor, he never attacked or insulted anybody or any group because his Godliness and orientation do not warrant him to do such things.

“In Imo, the elite gave him (Okorocha) all sorts of names, including ‘Alhaji in Douglas House’, yet, Imo people voted massively for him in 2011 and in 2015 too. And if there could be room for third term, they would have also voted for him.”

Crime / Lagos Prophet Sets Member Ablaze In Church, Says God Asked Him To Do So(photo) by investigator: 10:22am On Jan 19, 2016

A woman simply identified as Madam Bosede was burnt beyond recognition after a prophet in her church, the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) on Unity Street in Abule-Egba in Lagos, set her ablaze while trying to show that he was a true man of God during his sermon last Sunday January 17th.

According to The Nation, the prophet while preaching, said he heard the “spirit of God” tell him that he was in their midst and that that if he sets the woman ablaze, nothing will happen to her. He called up the woman, asked for Kerosene to be poured on her right in the church and then struck a match stick. Unfortunately, she started burning. Narrating what happened, Bosede said

“Our prophet said the spirit of God whispered to him that I would not burn if he sets me on fire. When I came out, they poured kerosene on my body and set me ablaze. But, unfortunately, I was burnt beyond recognition and before the other church members could get water, the deed had already been done.”he said Speaking on the incident, the prophet said he clearly heard a voice instructing him to set a member on fire to prove and confirm that God was in their midst. “I heard the voice clearly, but I don’t know what happened after we set fire on her. God has been speaking to me since and it has been working, so I wonder why now,” he said. The victim is currently lying critically ill in the hospital. Meanwhile some members of the church have sworn never to go back to the church again “We cannot worship here again. Who knows who the spirit will ask him to burn next.”one of them said A resident of the area identified as Irene Ohekina said: “I don’t pity her; she was the one who allowed herself to be deceived by the prophet. Why did the prophet not try the fire on himself or any of his family member?” Another resident simply Nkechi said for the prophet to have given such instruction, it must have come from God, adding “I believe it’s the sins of the victim that made her burn, the prophet of God could not have lied.”she said

Politics / I Leaked Sanusi's Private Letter To Jonathan - Amaechi Confesses by investigator: 12:10pm On Jan 16, 2016

Celebrities / How Wizkid Broke “bottle” On Dammy Krane’s Head At Quilox Night Club On Thursday by investigator: 9:18am On Jan 15, 2016
Only yesterday Dammy Krane apologized to Wizkid and his fans for calling the starboy a Thief & bi*ch a few days ago. Following that apology he also revealed that Wizzy stole slangs and song ideas from him.

Well it seems Wizkid did not accept his apology because in the early hours of this morning a fight ensued between the two at Club Quilox in Lekki and according to our reputable source, Wizkid allegedly broke a bottle on Dammy Krane’s head!

The pair attended last night’s All Black Party which was hosted by footballer, Obafemi Martins and things sort of escalated between the two leading to a bottle being broken on Dammy Krane’s head by Wizkid.

According to the publication:-

A source said, ‘When Wizkid enterted the club, it seemed he saw Dammy Krane but didn’t go to meet him, then about 15 minutes later, it seemed Dammy was showing him some attitude, then Wizkid went to meet him. The next thing we saw everywhere had scattered.

Wizkid broke a Remy Martins bottle on his head before bouncers separated them’. Arrrgh… I guess you know how thick that Bottle is?

Multiple eye witnesses say Wizkid clearly attacked first before bouncers tried to separate them. Then the club owner Shina Peller waded into the fight as well.

The club owner, Shina Peller intervened and took both parties into his office to settle the matter.

Well…damn! 2016 is definitely the year of beefs! I never thought they would have take this to this extent.
