Politics / Nigeria @60: Not Yet Uhuru For Our ‘diamond’ – By Sola Adeyemo by ireportnews: 7:55am On Oct 01, 2020
On October 1st every year, Nigerians gather in celebration of her independence. It was in 1960 the curtain of freedom was raised in the theater of liberty and the road that leads to democracy and self-determination was laid bare for the people of the new nation.
The early leadership at the helm of governance built on the successes of the 1960 groundbreaking and marshaled the country into a republic in 1963.
The emblematic feat to take Nigeria into a federal republic three years after taking sole responsibility of her people and future was clear evidence of the roadmap the early leaders had designed. That roadmap from available testaments gave rise to a lot of hope and faith that the largest black nation on earth, a symbol of the black race was positioned for grace and grandeur in no distant time.
Nigerian leaders since independence in 1961 to present day
But in subsequent years, the administration resorted to low-key events.
Starting with the Jonathan administration, rather than the usual public showpiece, the government resolved to hold a strictly military event tagged Presidential Change of Guards at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa. Interestingly, when President Muhammadu Buhari came on board in 2015, he sustained the new culture.
On Thursday, the 1st of October 2020, the change of guards is expected to hold inside the Presidential Villa in the morning while an anniversary dinner will hold later in the day.
Both events are expected to hold within the Presidential Villa. The programmes outlined for this year’s anniversary will continue on Friday with a Jumat service and lecture as well as an interdenominational church service on Sunday.
ANALYSIS: 12 ministers Buhari retained in previous portfolios
Regardless of whether the mode of celebration the government intends to adopt, the most pertinent question remains whether Nigeria has fared well in 60 years of her existence as an independent nation.
SECURITY
Nigerians cannot boast of a secured country in the 60 years of being an independent nation. The national security architecture has been confronted by global security challenges, like terrorism, militancy and kidnapping and it has fallen under the weight.
The country is compounded with a plethora of security challenges. One of the vital problems with the security sector in Nigeria has been funding and lack of personnel. For example, the United Nations’ ratio is 1 policeman to 400 persons, but in Nigeria, there is less than 300,000 policemen for almost 200 million people and almost half of that number of policemen are attached to VIPs.
The first military coup in Nigeria and how it changed the country
And in this day and age when security is technologically-driven, the country, to a large extent, still relies on crude methods to detect and maintain law and order. And while lack of funding is a major issue, corruption within the national security apparatus has compromised whatever standard is expected to be upheld.
The primary responsibility of the government as enshrined in the constitution is to ensure the protection of the lives and property of the people. When security becomes a scarce commodity, development whether economic or political becomes a nut to crack.

In tackling the country’s security challenges, it’s necessary for the security chiefs to desist from the politicization of security issues. “Our security chiefs should also stop politicizing the security sector to impress the political leaders. The war against Book Haram especially has suffered many setbacks in over a decade of efforts to decimate the group.
HEALTH
The health sector has been in a comatose state for a very long time and it has worsened over the years that even the turn of democracy could barely save it especially from brain drain.
The government, to say the least, has not channeled the required effort into personnel welfare and health infrastructure. The a need for more concerted efforts both on the parts of the government and medical practitioners in order to improve the sector’s fortune has always been the unanswered question.
Evidently, the health sector hasn’t fared so well because all veritable indices have not shown any improvement, hence, the need to reposition the health sector by the government.
Nigeria used to attract many visitors seeking health treatment in the early fifties and sixties during the closing stage of colonial rule. However, since self-government took control, the quality of health delivery has snowballed into a terrible state so much so that Nigerian elites now troops into foreign lands on medical tourism.
EDUCATION
The state of the quality of education has been described as sickening in many quarters. And that would be putting it mildly. Most Nigerian graduates who are the products of the failing system are evidence of how horrendous the academic standard has fallen compared to the colonial and post-colonial era.
After the mid-90s, the educational standard of many national institutions began to buckle under the weight of neglect and corruption. Nigeria has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children and the government failed in fixing the situation.
Strike action by academic staff of Nigerian institutions has marred whatever is left of the Nation’s and many has come to still distorted academic calendar due to industrial action vu both academic and non-academic staff as normal.
ECONOMY
Beating recession and bouncing back, Nigeria’s economy situation is a tale of unending trials plenty errors.
Per capital income has reduced compared to decades ago, the naira fallen lower than it has ever been as much as the cost of living and prices of goods and commodities.
Recently Nigeria overtook India to become the poverty center of the world, having the highest concentration of poor people living below $2 a day.

Health / The Raging ‘‘third World War’’: Why Covid-19 May Defeat The Contractual Rights O by ireportnews: 5:26pm On Apr 28, 2020
No one envisaged it. Nobody saw it coming. The rage of the Covid-19 has been quite phenomenal in all ramifications. The big bull is here; the all-powerful Coronavirus and its deadly fangs have unleashed untold fear, terror and hardship on all of us. From the Americas to Asia, from Europe to Africa and from Australia to Oceania; Covid-19 has swept through the seven continents of the world like a deadly hurricane. Right now, it’s only because the Antarctica is aloof and not habitable for human beings, that’s why this daredevil cannot touch it.
It’s an understatement to say that this Wuhan-born virus has wreaked untold havoc on our world and its devastating effects may take the whole world about five years to mop up, according to experts. But what is it…what is Coronavirus or Covid-19 as it’s been renamed lately?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Medical experts have affirmed that the virus can be transmitted from person to person, usually after close contact with an infected patient, for example, in a household, workplace, or health care facility.
Coronavirus outbreak has negatively impacted on global economy in a very shocking way and world renowned economists, groups, rating agencies, business schools and top ivory towers have all been taken aback by the ravaging powers of this raging storm. According to World Economic Forum, “The shock to the global economy from COVID-19 has been both faster and more severe than the 2008 global financial crisis (GFC) and even the Great Depression. In those two previous episodes, stock markets collapsed by 50% or more, credit markets froze up, massive bankruptcies followed, unemployment rates soared above 10%, and GDP contracted at an annualized rate of 10% or more. But all of this took around three years to play out. In the current crisis, similarly dire macroeconomic and financial outcomes have materialized in just three weeks. Politics / Why Oshiomhole Is Losing Grips In APC by ireportnews: 2:20pm On Jul 28, 2019
That the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) arguably the largest political party in Africa, Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole is embattled at the moment is no more a news.
But, what is actually unknown to many, most especially those who are not privy to the political structure of the APC and the day to day leadership tactics of the party is why the former Edo State governor is under attack from party faithfuls and why he is fast losing the grips in the party’s hierarchy.
It could be recalled that few months back, precisely March 2019, the crisis bedeviling the party reared its ugly head when a section of the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) demanded the resignation of the Iyambo, Edo born ex-Labour activist and politician.
Then, the Deputy National Chairman (North) spoke on behalf of some of his colleagues and blamed Oshiomhole’s leadership style for the setbacks being encountered by the party.
According to Shuaibu who fire the salvo said and I quote “In advanced democracies, people who fail to add value or build over and above what they met on assumption of duty, show some civilized examples; they honorably bow out,” Shuaibu said.
Back then, Oshiomhole was accused of taking unilateral decisions without inputs by the NWC. Shuaibu also said Oshiomhole’s high- handedness, besides depleting the ranks of the party also led to the Supreme Court’s verdict then which upturned the party’s electoral victory in Zamfara State thereby paving the way for Mohammed Bello Matawalle of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) who initially lost to the candidate of the APC to emerge governor of the State.
It was also reported then that the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South-South) Prince Hilliard Eta also corroborated Shuaibu’s stand stating that it was unfortunate that Oshiomhole single-handedly damaged the solid groundwork through his actions, inactions and poor judgment. He also asked Oshiomhole to honourably step aside.
Recall also that the ruling party, APC had 23 States in 2015 but after the 2019 elections, the party lost seven out of these States.
Additionally, prior to the 2019 elections, APC had 60 senators but at the end of the polls, the number declined to 57. According to the section of the NWC, what this scenario means for any APC Senator to emerge AS a presiding officer in the red chamber, he must go and kneel down before PDP senators, clamouring and begging for their support.
This was part of the reasons party chieftains challenged the continuous staying in office of Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of the party.
Not done yet, Oshiomhole also went for the jugular of topmost chieftains of the APC including former governors Rochas Okorocha and Ibikunle Amosun. Oshiomhole accused Okorocha of being inimical with the truths on the situation in the party. Before his attack on the former Imo governor, Oshiomhole was accused by Amosun of conniving with some of his cohorts to hand over Ogun State to “a gang of expansionists”.

Politics / X-raying Tinubu Chances Of Emerging Nigeria's President by ireportnews: 1:56pm On Jul 28, 2019
Theoretically speaking, the 2019 general elections averagely conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which gave the incumbent President Muhammadu BuharI a second term of another four years should not be over celebrated by Nigerians. This is because, looking at it from a laysman’s eyes, Buhari has the back-up of strong-willed, popular and well-respected,politicians who control the medulla oblongata of their supporters even at the expense of the supporters’ wills. One of the pillars that supported the president and his second term ambitions firmly is Asiwau Bola Ahmed Tinubu, national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Prior to the elections, the Jagaban of Borgu did all within his capacity to campaign vigorously for the President’s victory over his main and major opposition candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. </p>

As the man in the face of this piece, Asiwaju Tinubu is being rumoured in certain segment of the country to be mulling the idea of gunning &nbsp;for the coveted number one seat of the Akinola Aguda House in Aso Rock, Abuja. Though, Asiwaju has not formally come out to declare to Nigerians his intention to run for the country’s number one plum job, the intensity with which many of his admirers and “haters” alike have been discussing and going about the issue have so far generated heated controversies and debates in the political space of the nation and beyond.

Recall that at the emergence of Nigeria’s nascent democracy back then in 1999, Asiwaju Tinubu was the only progressives governor in the entire South West and he faced a lot of discriminations most especially from the Olusegun Obasanjo-led Presidency. At a point, OBJ seized Lagos State revenue for years but Asiwaju devised alternative techniques to weather the storm of OBJ. He (Asiwaju) knew that Lagos State is like a country and could survive even without any support from the central. Asiwaju was able to stand firm on his decision never to dance to the tune of OBJ and his PDP cohorts who wanted to “control his mentality”. Won’t such a man with rare sterling political qualities and courageous leadership traits do better in Aso Rock if given a chance?

While many are confidently beating their chests that Asiwaju Tinubu would never think of contesting for the presidency, &nbsp;some Nigerians in their own best opinions believe that the 3rd democratically elected governor of the Centre of Excellence remains the best man for the job, if he decides to throw in his cap in the presidential battle ring come 2023 – this is if the presidency is zoned to the South West. However, judging by the public opinion and feelers being scooped from those in the know and close political watchers and strategists, Asiwaju Tinubu stands tall in overcoming all obstacles and rocks of Gibraltar that may stand his way during the 2023 polls. You may want to ask why? Well, one must not conclude on what perhaps may not be conclusive as yet; people should learn to belief in the policy of “never say never” in democracy or anything they do not have personal or direct control over in life.
To be candid, democracy is strictly about the game of electoral numbers and the votes and wishes of the majority and not the minority. That’s why it is often said that, in democracy, the minority will have their say, but the majority will always have their ways, except if it’s not under a free and fair electoral contest. If this statement above could be put into consideration, then Tinubu may emerge as Nigerian’s 14th President/Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces….or he may not. If it is the wish of the Nigerian masses, most especially majority of eligible voters of the country that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is their desired candidate for the presidency, so shall it be.
