Why are you surprised?

Most Nigerians are creationists. As far as they are concerned, the earth is roughly 6000 years old. All available evidence to the contrary does not matter to them.

Education / Re: Why Is Any Number Multiplied By Zero Equals To Zero? by iWise(m): 3:16pm On Jan 14, 2021
It's a consequence of the fact that the set of all real numbers together with the binary operations "+" and "*" is a ring with unity - that is, a ring that has a multiplication identity (rings are some of the most basic algebraic structures). 0 is the additive identity in this ring and 1 is the multiplication identity,, and every element has an additive inverse - if a is an element in this ring, then -a is its addive inverse so a+(-a) = 0.

For example -1 is the additive inverse of 1, so

1+(-1) = 0.

Suppose b is an arbitrary real number, then by distributive property of a ring,

b*0 = b*(1+(-1)) = b*1 + b*(-1) = b +(-b) = 0.

Thanks for this, a BSc (Mathematical sciences) with 2.1 (3.9 CGPA) (graduated from Nigeria, with 6 years experience as a Statistician in Nigeria, can he apply for PhD directly in Computer science or Statistics

I cannot speak to your chances of getting into a PhD in computer science program - don't know much about those. With regards to PhD in statistics, it depends on the competition for the available slots in the universities you're considering. Your 6 years experience as a statistician is definitely a plus.

The only time he may have issues is if he goes for a PhD in a field for which he does not have sufficient undergrad preparation. The first 2 years is usually Masters-level stuff. I get your point sha cos American schools (especially top ones) can be really intense as they give you no breathing space.

I am in the STEM field...

Data science and my degree is from a European country...

I have some time left before I am made to leave and I was considering the USA doctorate

I'm not sure there are a lot of stand-alone PhD in Data science programs in the US, so I'll be assuming that in general they are housed within the Statistics program. Under this assumption, the only hard math (hard being relative) you will be required to take is measure theory - it can get a bit nasty if you're not given to abstract reasoning. So I think it's safe to proceed to a PhD program with your European BS.

Pls I have a bachelor with a first class...

Can I apply for PhD with it?

I don't understand how it works without a masters

It depends on the school and the program you're interested in.

From what I gather, most programs in the US will allow you enrol in a PhD directly with a BS. I personally do not recommend it if you're interested in a very complex program such as the types you'd find in Physics or Maths or Chemistry, say - unless of course, you got your degree from a US or Canadian or Western Europe or Chinese college (this list is not exhaustive). For all programs in Engineering, Statistics etc, you shouldn't have much of an issue adapting. Please be mindful that I am writing from the perspective of a STEM graduate.

If there is anyone who have been admitted or knows anyone that has been admitted into the engineering program should please share their profile. Thanks

If indeed he was denied admission due to low GPA, it must be the case that his GPA from his last 60 credit hours did not measure up. Overall GPA is of little import when it comes to graduate admission.

Entry scores are usually lower than 320, that should tell you a lot about the number of applicants scoring that high. I did an exhaustive search of this a while back for Electrical Engineering, less than 25 of the top 164 schools in my list requested for GRE scores >= 320 and they're all in the top 30 ranking.
I know mean is not a reliable measure and so does every person who has taken an intro class in statistics. I wanted to comment earlier about skewed data, but it will only lead to more argument. If the minimum score is 130 and the average score is 144.9 and 145.8, what percentage of people can you assume scored above 320?

P.S. Of course, it is trivial. Are we supposed to be exhibiting our statistical prowess here?

I'm not exactly arguing with you, i just needed you to provide clarity on why you made that assumption.

On a different note, it might interest you to know that there are departments in schools outside the so called "top 30 rank" with scores atleast equally as high. I know a certain university which runs a certain program with more than 80% of its intake last fall scoring above 320.

PS. The basis for the initial discourse was that the instigator claimed that a score of 320 is unusual for Nigerians. Having noticed that his objective was to cast Nigerians as inferior to some other people, I then provided the rebuttal that, based on the data he provided, a score of 320 is unsual for any country that takes part in the test thereby rendering his claim trivial.

This discussion hardly qualifies as exhibiting "statistical prowess".

Topiipii:

The admit person is right, 320+ is unusual. Our average scores are 144.9V and 145.8Q from the 2018 report. The 2014 and 2016 reports were just a little bit better.

https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/snapshot_test_taker_data_2014.pdf page 20 (24 of 72)
https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/snapshot_test_taker_data_2016.pdf page 20 (24 of 72)
https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/snapshot_test_taker_data_2018.pdf page 20 (24 of 73)

I took the liberty of plotting the values from the 2018 report and checked to see what percentage of people scored in the range 155-165 for both Quant and Verbal.
Verbal:
Mean: 144.9, Standard Deviation: 7.4, P(x>155) = 0.08615, P(x>160) = 0.02065, P(x>165) = 0.0033

Quant:
Mean: 145.8, Standard Deviation: 7.8, P(x>155) = 0.1191, P(x>160) = 0.03434, P(x>165) = 0.00692

Total number of test takers: 6,861

Less than 1% of test takers scored more than 165 for both sections and 8.6% and 11.9% scored above 155. How is 320+ not rare?

For anyone interested, I plotted the curves at:
https://homepage.divms.uiowa.edu/~mbognar/applets/normal.html

You can't just assume normality. Did you verify that the data is indeed normally distributed? An easy way to do that would be to plot a histogram.

Again, if you look at the data cited by the person of interest, the spread for Nigerian quant scores is 7.9. This automatically tells you that the mean value is not a very reliable measure of central tendency here - the median will provide a lot more insight. The same can be said about almost any other country in that report. This is why I concluded that his hypothesis is rather trivial.

Once again, the idea of measuring a person's or a group of persons' performance using a comparison to averages is rather silly. What one should be more interested in is the entry cutoff at a majority of schools who require the test score - if a school tells you a certain score is good enough then it is by default good enough, so the argument of performing below average becomes rather "academic".

Naija average is not only less than global average, it is less than Africa's average, by a whopping 35! Hope this is wrong sha, just hope this is wrong.

My point is the word "average" is abused a lot by non statisticians/mathematicians. His use of average in that statement is meaningless from a statistical point of view because scoring below average does not imply you did poorly. Scoring below a standard like a cutoff on the other hand means one did poorly. I'm just trying to correct his/her use of a technical term.

There's no point arguing with folks who use the sample size of their elite friends as the norm. You're absolutely right. My GRE was 330+ (converted from old scale) and I had 740+ on GMAT, but I know full well that most Nigerians find those exams very challenging. So it will be foolhardy of me to say Nigerians perform well as a whole. The average GMAT score for Nigerians is far below average compared to the rest of the world, and this statistic is from GMAC. I saw it some years ago. Don't waste your time arguing. It's the same way some people say that there is money in Nigeria or that Nigerians are rich.

For someone who's trying really hard to use statistical terms, you sure did shit the bed on this one. How can you assert that Nigerians score below average in an exam? What is the definition of average? If you're thinking what i am thinking, I guess the more appropriate phrase would be Nigerians on average score below standard.

It is unusual (less so for engineering and medical guys/girls, but more unusual for others). I believe you smart enough, so I will be objective with you.

First, go through this whole thread. Tell us how many Nigerians have 320+ in GRE. If you say there is nothing unusual, then your answer should be around 10% or more.

Go and look at ETS GRE analysis, historical analysis of GRE scores by country. The mean and standard deviation will tell you something. Compare that to China and other countries, then throw away pride and come back here to report to those who seem to be ignorant of this.

To reiterate, based on past scores, it is unusual to see a Nigerian score 320+. Yes, we always want to claim we sabi, but this is a sad part that we need to acknowledge and improve on. By Nigerian, I mean Nigerian who did primary, secondary and university in Nigeria. I don't mean outside of Nigeria as I know several who did undergrad education in the US and have no problem smashing GRE.

You're making the unsubstantiated claim that the majority of Nigerians who write the GRE are members of nairaland and also report their scores on nairaland.

Modification: I just went through the report for 2014. If it's anything to go by, scoring 320+ is rather unusual for all countries whose citizens wrote the GRE so by implication unusual for Nigeria. I concede you have a point. I think its also fair to state that your point is rather trivial given that all countries represented in the report had an average score less than 320.
