Is there any reservation for/against any particular medical cover scheme at the SAembassy in Lagos for a study permit application?
In other words, which medical cover should I purchase Compcare, Discovery, ABSA, or Momentum?

Am I supposed to lodge a study permit application at the embassy or the VFS centre in Lagos?

Thanks, in anticipation!

Momentum happens to be the most popular amongst students. That was what I used by the way.

Hello guys.

Please, can someone in SA help confirm if Stanbic bank MasterCard can still be used to withdraw cash from ATMs in SA.

This is a very good field and its highly needed in SA, but getting scholarship from scratch is a tough call. Its possible but it is tough. The only scholarship that comes to mind is NRF and you can only apply after you are registered in school. Truth is I advise people to go to top schools like UCT, Witts, Stellinbosch or UP. You need to chase career first before scholarships, you have a better standing world wide if you go to top schools especially UCT or Witts. Chase a good school first before scholarships, based on who your supervisor is you can get funding too. Pls run away from black supervisors in all these schools especially a Nigerian supervisor, who supervises you also matter, for funding, publication and career wise. I know what am saying. Also try and do 1 year course work and one year research, a lot of foreigners get it wrong by doing research only, your coursework puts you on a higher pedestal, if you can have a good grade in course work, you can have an SA transcripts, you can apply for jobs with your transcripts and other things, let SA know that you are good because thats the only thing to show people that you are academically sound. Sholarship or not pls come to SA with this degree, i guaranty u a bright future in SA in max of 2.5 years, and u can easily relocate but choose a very good school and supervisor

@Staggerlee, you forgot to add UKZN. That university has one of the highest research output in SA and is currently the 4th best in SA.

Yes, it has to be a government owned hospital.

Not in SA, M in SA is medicine, in the US it stands for Mathematics. Mathematics in SA is categorised under sciences

Please have a look at this article by a South African agency.

Hi everyone..

wanted to ask.. for the study permit? the medical forms to be filled, does it have to be done at a government hospital?

Yes o, the medical form has to be filled, signed and stamped by a medical officer. The radiological report has to be filled by a radiologist.

I compared Critical skill visa to exceptional skills, critical skills is much harder to get please try and comprehend my grammar. Can someone that studied Political Science or Human Resources or Business Admin or IRPM or English and many other courses get Critical skills, all the guys here that have critical skills are all engineers. if you are not in STEM (Science, Technology,Engineering or Medicine) forget critical skills. I think you just a beef person. I will pass

Bros, the ''M" in STEM stands for mathematics.

It actually depends on what country you are in. In the UK , it's gonna go left while in the US, right. The reasons are that the driver's door is at the other side and the different driving regulations for both countries will determine where the steering will is located. Definitely right in naija.

In the same class of reasoning I dare tell you that engineering is not as physical as you see it . take for example analysing electromagnetic wave in free space is crazy but fact oriented .

I have a elder brother that studied mathematics and I can tell you I am no match with him when it comes to maths but I can tell you I will solve many of the maths he can give solution to.

My good friend, you just displayed a weakness inherent in math capabilities of a lot of engineers. Maths ain't about solving problems, its all about understanding concepts involving numbers, space AND quantities. A mathematician's prerogative is not about how to utilize these concept. We are more concerned about their existence, structure and implications.

Mathematics Is abstract, statistics is practical and applicable to life situation.. we collect data, analyse d data, interpret d data n dish out a conclusive result based on d analyzed data.. I wud rather be a statistician Dan be a mathematician..

Dude, not all statistics is practical. Have you heard about advanced probability theory? What you apply in this branch of Statistics is mostly concepts from Measure theory and Functional Analysis.

Okay let's both get it clear . mathematician we all know can give you how one plus one becomes two, engineers on the other hand care much about not just seeing one plus one as two but how applicable this addition could effect its surroundings .

The reason why engineers don't dig in to mathematics from scracth like you do is apparently because we have got resistor , capacitors gears etc to research about .
I don't know where π ÷×√ came from the same way you don't know how resistors capacitors and diode are machined to give you that phone you are using to claim dominance .

Thank you

At least, you are honest. i'll give you that. I dare say you need to expend a lot more brain power to study maths especially in the advanced levels. The reason is not far from the fact a lot of what you do as a mathematician is conceptual. Mind you, i ain't talking about the crap they teach in undergrad classes.

Why don't you start and mind less if I will comprehend or not . if you have got point to prove , prove it and stop this show of chest beating .

Using Z transforms as an example, a mathematician is not interested in how you apply this to the study of electrical signals, we are more concerned about the nature of their region of convergence etc etc. A concept I believe is alien to most Naija engineers.

A typical mathematics student. If you must brag about topics in mathematics don't brag with differential equation Laplace transformation, fourier series , these are topics meant for engineers .

Abeg brag with maths we I never do before.

The funny thing about your statement is that, if I'm to start a conversation with you involving differential equations, Laplace transforms, Fourier transforms, Fourier series and Z transforms, you prolly wouldn't understand shit about what I am saying.

Teach them those topics and they will show you even better ways to solve them.

Well, if you glance through the Mathematics department website at the university of Harvard, there is a statement in there that goes thus "Note that no one can teach you mathematics, all we can do is guide you", or something like that sha.

As an aside: due to the many years an average Nigeria trained engineer spends learning crap maths, it is extremely difficult to condition their minds for real mathematics, where your computational abilities or lack of it makes no difference. I am a student of Descartes and for that reason, i believe maths is more of an art. Oh, how I love those elegant greek symbols such as: epsilon, delta, lambda, alpha, beta etc. Beautiful, I say.

Engineering students are mathematicians......they can solve better than maths students most times. Tell me that aspect of maths that we engineers don't use in analysis, is it matrix, permutation n comb, Lagrange method of interpolations, differentiation n integration, mathematic which covers bending moments n shear forces, Laplace transforms n fourier series, statistics(bernoulli eqn, poissons, measures of disperssion, measures of central tendency etc),trigonomery, linear equations n simultaenous linear equ, polynomial equ, partial fractions, graph plotting, linear algebra, complex numbers, hyperbolic functions, determinants, probality, ode(ordinary differential equ), n many more but I know some mathematics topics are strictly for maths students but just gv d same topic to engineers n they will pieces it. NoTE: I av seen a maths student reads maths text with dictionary, I don't kn what he's actually doing with it, I av also seen d same guy reading a novel with a calculator......are all of them maths students? No offence though

Bros, no vex. Have you heard about Eilenberg-Steenroid axioms for homology theory?

Well, if what engineers do is calculation, then you ain't no better than a calculator.
