Speaking during a visit to the Director, Mrs. Magdalene Leo, president of CoT, disclosed that their choice of Dr. Thomas as grand matron is because of her impactful mentorship of women and young people, and time-tested credibility as a beacon of hope for Ibeno community. The Forum further described her as a "friend of widows, not only in Ibeno land but across other local government areas of the state", and a "woman who gives strength to those without strength". As stated by Mrs. Leo, parts of the Forum's aims are to enhance rapid community development and fast track women empowerment. It will also seek ways to foster unity and love by preaching peaceful co-existence, as well as mobilizing women to play greater roles in politics and governance. To give it a solid footing, the president disclosed that plans are underway to have it registered with relevant authorities. She described their objectives as noble and praised their courage to find ways to break free from their limitations, encouraging them to always speak up and be heard. With the group having its own finances, it can make independent decisions on issues that affect their communities, the local government area, state, and country in general, she submitted. •••Makes Case for Akwa Ibom as Commission’s Headquarters Philanthropist, politician, and Managing Director/CEO of Abaringo Nigeria Limited, Dr. Abasiono Okon, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing into law the bill establishing the South-South Development Commission (SSDC). Speaking with reporters from his Abuja base, the Ikono-born businessman described the move as a "good omen and a welcome development," noting that it would ensure balanced development across the region. The former House of Assembly aspirant for Ikono State Constituency particularly commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his strategic role in making the SSDC a reality, stating that Akpabio’s tenure has ushered in a new era of legislative-executive harmony that is yielding tangible benefits for all parts of the country. Dr. Okon emphasized that with the SSDC now in place, all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria have dedicated development agencies to address their regional infrastructural and economic challenges. He dismissed concerns raised by some quarters over the existence of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), arguing that both interventionist bodies have distinct mandates. "The South-South region is the economic heartbeat of the nation, producing the oil wealth that sustains Nigeria. There is nothing wrong with having both SSDC and NDDC working in synergy to fast-track development. While the NDDC covers nine states, SSDC is specifically for the six South-South states, ensuring a more focused approach to development," he said. Addressing the debate over the location of the SSDC headquarters, Dr. Okon strongly advocated for Akwa Ibom State. According to him, beyond political considerations, Akwa Ibom stands out as the most suitable host state due to its security stability, clean environment, and infrastructural readiness. "In all fairness, Rivers State already hosts the NDDC headquarters. Akwa Ibom, with its zero-security concerns, serene environment, and excellent infrastructure, is the most strategic and deserving choice for the SSDC headquarters," he submitted. Meanwhile, the signing of the SSDC Bill by President Tinubu has been widely applauded across the South-South, with many stakeholders optimistic that the commission will drive rapid infrastructural and human capital development in the region.

Those who didn't clap when Uwemedimo Nwoko, SAN handed over as the 5th International President of Ati Annang Foundation on Saturday , 15th March, 2025 are perhaps those who didn't know the gravity and import of a harmonised orthography to a people or tribe. Luckily, the majority of the over one thousand participants at the handing over ceremony understood that the administration of the 5th had killed a giant elephant, so the ovation that day was deafening. Even those who hitherto didn't know the history recorded by the accomplishment of the Nwoko led EXCO, got a free lecture from the goodwill messages of dignitaries like Governor Umo Eno who was the Special Guest of Honour on the occasion. "You have saved the Anaañ language from extinction", says Governor Umo Bassey Eno who was represented on the occasion by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi. Remarks by Senator Eyakenyi was a commendation to the formal presentation of the Harmonised Orthography of Anaañ language made possible by the Uwemedimo Nwoko Presidency of Ati Annang, a leading Sociocultural group in the Annang nation. In addition to the presentation of the Harmonised Orthography, the Nwoko led team also presented both the curriculum and the teacher's guide for the teaching of Anaañ language in schools which were the core compositions of the Annang Language Development Projects (ALDP). With the Completion of the Annang Language Development Projects by Nwoko's presidency of Ati Annang, the Annang nation has fulfilled all the requirements to grow from being a dialect to be recognised as one of the recognised languages spoken in Nigeria. Apart from now being a recognised language in Nigeria, the completion of the Annang Language Development Projects by the Nwoko led administration will now make it possible for Anaañ language to be taught in schools, thereby safeguarding and protecting the language from going into oblivion, a feat that got the Itai Afe Annang V, Obong Blaise Awakama dancing. "Motanda doesn't dance but he danced on the day Namondo was found ", said Obong Blaise Awakama as he started dancing. The revered monarch was referencing the classic MOTANDA OYOM NAMONDA to say that even when he is not known to be a dancer, that the presentation of the Harmonised Orthography called for dancing. Obong Blaise Awakama thanked Uwemedimo Nwoko, SAN for delivering on the project which was championed by Afe Anaañ, the highest Sociocultural body in the Annang nation. 24th June, 2017 was the day Afe Anaañ handed over the Annang Language Development Project to Ati Annang Foundation. In July, 2017, a four-man team comprising, Dr Arnold Udoaka, Dr Itoro Michael, Dr Gloria Inyang and Barr. Aniedi Akpabio set the ball rolling by meeting the officials of the Nigeria Educational and Research Development Council (NERDC), the body responsible for the standardisation and regulation of languages in Nigeria. That meeting gave birth to series of consultations at different levels and high-powered workshops by NERDC, the regulatory Agency for Language Development and Curriculum for Basic and Senior Secondary Education. Since 2017, unquantifiable work has been committed to the realisation of the Annang Language Development Projects but the Nwoko led Ati Annang made it the priority of their administration when it came on board in February, 2022, ensuring that the project was completed within the lifespan of the tenure which ended on the 15th of March. Speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Educational and Research Development Council (NERDC), Dr. Chima Egbujuo recalled how Mr Nwoko called him over the project shortly after he resumed office as the President of Ati Annang in 2022. "This president is a very humble man. I didn't even know that I was speaking to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria when he first called me to solicit for my support towards the realisation of the Harmonised Orthography for Anaañ language. This project would never have been possible without his commitment and hardwork". All the speakers on the occasion, especially the Chairman of the Occasion, Barr. Paul Usoro, SAN and the Commissioner for Education of Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Ubong Umoh commended Barr. Nwoko for the realisation of the Annang Language Development Project. "A language grows from culture to civilization when it becomes exportable and the only way a language can be exportable is when it has been developed enough to be taught in schools. With this harmonised orthography and curriculum, Anaañ language will not only be taught in schools in Akwa Ibom State, it can also be taught all over the world. As commissioner for education, I will give it all the support required for the teaching of Anaañ language to begin in the next academic year", the education commissioner vowed. Other education stakeholders such as DIG Udom Ekpoudom who is the proprietor of Tower of Ivory Schools and Senator Emmanuel Ibokessien who is the proprietor of Ritman Schools, pledged to include Anaañ language as one of the subjects to be taught in their schools. They commended Barr. Nwoko for working towards to the the realisation of the project. In his speech, Barr. Nwoko took a trip down memory lane to highlight some efforts made towards the realisation of the Harmonised Orthography while commending the members of the project committee, members of his EXCO, Stakeholders of Ati Annang and the leaders of Annang nation. " On the 23rd April, 2024, I was privileged to head a high-powered delegation of Ati Annang Foundation to the NERDC at Abuja...The resolution at that meeting galvanized the project at top speed and led to the approval and printing of the Harmonised Orthography. This was followed by a workshop organised by the NERDC and Ati Annang Foundation in Uyo. The products of that Workshop were the approval of the Curriculum and the Teachers Guide. That is why we have this historic ceremony today". For their supportive roles, Barr. Nwoko thanked the leadership of NERDC, the project committee led by Prof. Imelda Udoh, his predecessor, Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian ,BOT Chairman of Ati Annang, Sir Emem Akpabio and the State Chairman of the PDP, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Akpan. Others who got Mr Nwoko's commendation were, Emmanuel Enoidem, SAN, Engr. Etido Inyang, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, Hon. Utibe Nwoko, Hon. Aniefiok Nkom, Hon. Mrs Ime Charles, Hon. Gideon Uwah, Hon. Uyo Ukpana, Hon. Ntiedo Udosen, Hon. Monday Festus and Hon. Simon Dominic.

By Henshaw NYONG I recently found myself in a conversation about a gentleman I only knew from a distance. The people in that discussion spoke highly of him; how much he is loved, how deeply respected he is, and how he has done so much without making noise about it. Normally, I don’t get easily swayed by such praises. Not because I am skeptical, but because I believe true greatness should stand the test of independent scrutiny. However, I have a friend, Atuekong Paul Bassey, who always tells me that I am positively stubborn. His reason? I don’t just go with the flow. I don’t jump on bandwagons. I don’t let sentiments dictate my judgment. Instead, I take my time, do my research, and form my own conclusions. And that is exactly what I decided to do - dig deeper and find out for myself what many people probably don’t know about Senator Aniekan Etim Bassey, who was sworn into the 10th Senate in June 2023 to represent Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District. In that conversation I stumbled upon, one question kept coming up: What has he really done since he went to the National Assembly? Before putting this piece together, I had to understand the reality of the legislature. I realized that some lawmakers have been in the Senate for five, four, three, or two terms. These are the ranking Senators; the first-choice names for major positions and committee chairmanships. Meanwhile, first-time Senators are often viewed like the youngest child in a typical Nigerian home. When something is being shared, the firstborn takes first, the second follows, and the youngest either waits or gets forgotten. For a first-time Senator, breaking through that system is not a walk in the park. You have to fight for relevance, work twice as hard, and push through the barriers of seniority. But has that stopped Senator Aniekan Bassey? I had to do my own findings, talk to people who would rather not be quoted, visit places, and ensure that whatever I put out was factual. And what I discovered? Quite revealing. I found out that even before becoming a Senator, Aniekan Bassey was already changing lives through his RHAB-YESS Foundation - the Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey Youth Entrepreneurship Support Scheme. Through this initiative, he lifted young people out of poverty, offering grants ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦1 million to support their businesses. Some politicians in our state thrive on past glory, but he isn’t one of them. As a strong disciple of the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D., his projects and programmes are in line with the ARISE Agenda. I found out that within his first three months in office, he had furnished at least one school per Local Government in the nine LGAs (Uyo, Nsit Ubium, Uruan, Ibiono Ibom, Itu, Etinan, Ibesikpo Asutan, Nsit Ibom and Nsit Atai) of his district with modern classroom tables, chairs, books, school bags, and at least five computer sets per school. I discovered that roads had been tarred and fitted with streetlights in several communities across the senatorial district. I spoke with some people who confirmed that sound and clean cars had been donated to constituents to aid their movement. I verified that at least one health centre per Local Government was set to receive essential drugs and supplements, because to him, the health of the people is non-negotiable. I traced details of an ₦800 million RHAB-YESS Mega Empowerment between August and December 2024, which has provided quarterly training for beneficiaries in all nine LGAs. Each beneficiary received between ₦200,000 and ₦500,000 to support their businesses. I confirmed that over 32 people have already gained Federal employment through his facilitation. I visited some locations and saw firsthand the solar-powered streetlights installed in Akpan Etuk Street, Udosen Uko Street, Itiam Etuk Ekpat by Nesman Filling Station, a greater part of Shelter Afrique, Uyo Club, Osongama, and several other locations across the Senatorial District. I found out that 500 youths have been trained and empowered with digital skills. Free medical outreaches have been carried out across the district. Over 10,000 educational kits have been donated to schools in all nine LGAs. More than 100 desktop and laptop computers have been distributed to schools. 100 rural women have been empowered with agro-inputs. 100 businesses have received development grants. Community roads have been constructed. Boreholes have been provided in rural areas and communities. 2,000 JAMB forms have been given already to students. Overseas scholarships have been awarded to brilliant but indigent students. However, unlike some politicians who thrive on media noise, Senator Bassey allows his work to speak for him. He doesn’t crave attention or make a fuss about his achievements. Perhaps that’s why many don’t even realize the weight of what he has done within a short time in office. But as someone who, according to my friend Atuekong, doesn’t follow bandwagons, I had to dig deep to uncover these facts. And the more I searched, the clearer it became - Senator Aniekan Bassey, Ph.D, isn’t just another name in the Senate; he is a force and is shaping the reality of representation. But this is just the beginning. In the next part, we’ll look beyond his direct interventions and focus on his core legislative responsibilities - bills, motions, and advocacy shaping national policies. Because if you think you already know everything about Senator Aniekan Bassey, then you probably don’t know enough...!

The Member representing Ikot Abasi/Mkpat Enin/Eastern Obolo Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Uduak Odudoh, has once again facilitated federal civil service appointments for his constituents. The latest appointments, which add to his series of interventions, have been described as yet another step in his relentless effort to secure opportunities for the people of his constituency beyond legislative duties. At a breakfast meeting with the newly appointed federal civil servants at his residence, Hon. Odudoh urged them to uphold the renowned diligence and commitment of their people, emphasizing the need for excellence in their respective roles. The Ikot Abasi born National Assemblyman, who reiterated his commitment to securing more opportunities for his constituents, emphasized that true representation is about improving lives, not just making laws. “This is my way of making sure my people are not left behind in federal employment. Why We Oppose College of Education’s Conversion to University – COEASU The College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Afaha Nsit Chapter, has explained the reasons behind its opposition to the conversion of Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, into a University of Education. In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Brain E. Sunday, on Monday, the union clarified that it is not against the upgrade but insists on being part of the process to safeguard the welfare of its members. The statement noted that COEASU had, on February 5, 2025, written to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, requesting that the bill for the conversion be put on hold to allow academic staff to make necessary contributions. “It is unfortunate that our letter has been misinterpreted, leading to various speculations and reactions. For clarity, we are not against the proposed conversion. However, as key stakeholders, we must be allowed to make inputs to ensure that our rights, welfare, and entitlements are well protected,” the union stated. COEASU maintained that while the transition to a university is a welcome development, the interests of lecturers and other staff must not be sidelined in the process.

By Otobong Sampson A fractious Europe before his emergence as Minister-President of Prussia and subsequently, as first Chancellor of the German Empire had gone for long without an influential negotiator in its diplomatic sphere — one who could also compel peace upon the Continent. Peace had eluded the continent and its leaders at the time could not figure a solution to the incessant strife. For two decades, Otto von Bismarck, as German Chancellor, held together a continent which was riddled with unending conflicts and bitter wars. He successfully secured and preserve the peace of Europe in those years. The most prominent of his works without a doubt was the unification of Germany, bringing together the over 300 disparate German states into a single whole. This force of unity gave Germany a new status in Europe. Equally significant, was his preservation of peace in the continent for twenty years. So important were Bismarck's works in Europe that there is a fertile perspective that exist till now that were he to be alive by 1914, the war that began in Europe and assumed a global dimension would never have happened. Governor Umo Eno has emerged as the modern day Bismarck, playing the roles of a conciliator and peacemaker in Akwa Ibom State. So adroit is he that the lines of fiery partisanship, hitherto deep and visible, have been blurred almost into non existence. Where it exist, it is because brothers have to play politics. Across Nigeria today, Pastor Eno stands out shiningly as the totem of peace in a society that has often found itself soaked in waters of political bitterness and buried in a race of tribal supremacy. As Governor, he has mended the cracks in brotherhood and neatly grouting whatever crevices are left. He is welding back the bond of oneness. His every action and decision mirrors a man who seeks peace for all — and with all. Peace sustains existing developments. Peace drives new developments. In acknowledgment of this and other of his efforts, President Bola Tinubu last year in his Democracy Day Speech in Abuja gave him a generous mention and praised his efforts in governance and leadership. Senate President Akpabio has several times described the governor as a man of peace who continually seeks peace. In one such remark, he had said Governor Eno has a spirit of unity, "an apostle and disciple of peace". Atuekong Don Etiebet, elder statesman and national chieftain of the All Progressive Congress recently visited Oruk Anam Council to inspect the first 100 days strides of the Council chairman — an elected official of the Peoples Democratic Party. Other prominent figures and subalterns of the All Progressive Congress have commended and identified with the non-discriminatory, inclusive and unity-building governance model of the Governor. During the yuletide, the Akwa Ibom chapter of the APC received Christmas package from Governor Eno. The Senate President, commending the genuine spirit of unity shown by the governor, made a reciprocal gesture days later to Akwa Ibom PDP. In the new Akwa being constructed by Governor Eno, members of the PDP and supporters of his government can publicly identify with their brothers who belong to another party in their moment of glory and time of despair without fear of blacklisting. When anyone else would drive on the lane of power arrogance and easily slip into ideologies of self-justification, this significant ideological shift championed by the state's leader resonates loudly with the founding objectives of Akwa Ibom. So far, Governor Eno has been impressive in his efforts at leadership renaissance that takes its model after the patriotism of precolonial leadership. In that era, it was the peace amongst brothers and the force of unity that made the difference. Beyond the state, he is showing across Nigeria how it can be done again.

Contrary to recent criticism labeling Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo as a non-performing Minister, data from the Ministry of Gas (State) paints a different picture, highlighting significant achievements since he was sworn-in This independent report from painstaking findings divulge that since the inauguration of Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo as the Minister for Gas (State) and a pioneer Minister, the Ministry has achieved major successes in areas such as ending gas flaring, stimulating gas-based jobs, LNG policy development, encouragement of local content, and several other areas. The main achievements are: 1. PROMOTION OF GAS FLARING REDUCTION IN THE NIGER DELTA: This has led to cleaner air and healthier communities in the region. Ekperikpe Ekpo's commitment to ending gas flaring in Nigeria aligns perfectly with President Tinubu's recent signing of the Paris Accord, a global agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By working to end gas flaring, Ekpo is addressing a pressing environmental issue and supporting the country’s broader efforts to transition to a more sustainable energy future. 2. RESOLVING ISSUES RELATED TO THE GEOMETRIC POWER PLANT IN ABA AND THE BRASS METHANOL PROJECT: Ekperikpe Ekpo's hands-on approach is eloquent proof to his ability to solve complex problems and drive projects to completion. It was on Ekpo’s table that the over 20-year issue with the Geometric Power Plant in Aba was resolved, leading to constant power in Aba. 3. ADDRESSING LONGSTANDING GAS DEBTS OWED BY ELECTRICITY GENERATING COMPANIES (GENCOs): Ekperikpe Ekpo's efforts have been crucial in stabilizing the gas supply chain in Nigeria, preventing potential disruptions that could have affected the entire country. Electricity companies have owed gas companies since 2011, and Ekpo's intervention prevented devastating consequences for the country. 4. JOB CREATION THROUGH GROUNDBREAKING PROJECTS: The impeccable leadership style of Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo in the gas sector is set to create jobs, with several "life-changing" projects expected to add over 100,000 jobs to the Nigerian labour market over the next three years. These projects include the AHL Gas Processing Plant, ANOH Gas Processing Plant, the 23.3km by 36 inches ANOH-OB3 Gas Pipeline, the 50,000 metric tonne LPG Terminal in Onne, Rivers State, the Optimera Natural Gas facility in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos State, and the 20,000 metric tonne Windek Energy Limited LPG Depot in Atabrikang, Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State. 5. DIPLOMACY AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS: As the Minister of State for Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo has demonstrated remarkable diplomacy and international relations skills. The Nigeria-Morocco transnational gas pipeline project is a testament to his ability to navigate complex geopolitics, engage with multiple stakeholders, and craft a mutually beneficial agreement. This project is set to revolutionize Nigeria's gas industry, providing access to new markets, fostering economic growth, and establishing Nigeria as a major player in the international gas market. The successful execution of this project would be a significant milestone in President Tinubu's administration. What's more! Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo is a visionary leader whose commitment to sustainable economic growth, environmental preservation, and international cooperation is transforming the Nigerian gas sector. His achievements in stabilizing the gas supply chain, addressing longstanding debts, creating jobs, and driving international collaboration are nothing short of remarkable. Under his stewardship, Nigeria is poised to become a global leader in the energy market, providing cleaner and more efficient energy solutions, while also creating opportunities for economic development and job creation. Hon. Ekpo's awe-inspiring performance are clear evidence that demonstrates 'res ipsa loquitur' - the facts speak for themselves!!!

Icon Group Warns AKSG to Maintain Status Quo Ante Until Determination of 3 Pending Lawsuits Top hospitality outfit Icon Hotels Group has told the Akwa Ibom State Government to maintain the status quo ante on the management of the state’s 5-star hotel until the determination of the three pending suits in different courts in Uyo and Calabar. In a Caveat Emptor made available to TheMail on Monday, the group stated that it is aware that the state government is currently sourcing a substantive manager for the Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort, formerly Le Meridien Hotel. There are pending cases in the State High Court, Federal High Court, both in Uyo, and the Court of Appeal in Calabar involving both parties. The court cases are occasioned by an alleged breach of contract on the part of the AKSG, where the government abruptly ended the management contract it signed with Icon Group. In the Caveat Emptor issued on behalf of Icon Group by its legal representative, Abu Samson Esq. of Abu Samson & Co, 29B Colorado Street, Ministers Hill, Maitama, Abuja, the hospitality outfit warned that anyone or company who intends to show interest in taking over the management of the Ibom Hotels & Golf Resort in a substantive capacity would be doing so at his/her/their own peril. “It has come to the notice of our client, Icon Hotels & Resort Nigeria Limited, that despite pending court matters challenging the purported termination of the management contract agreement executed between the Akwa Ibom State Government and our client, the Akwa Ibom State Government is actually sourcing a substantive manager for the said hotel while the suit is pending in court. “Parties and counsel were duly served all court processes, and parties have also taken steps by exchanging pleadings and are presumed to understand the principles of law that they cannot take further steps in negotiating, appointing, and executing another contract with another substantive manager for the hotel until all matters are dispensed with,” the Caveat Emptor reads.

Why Akwa Ibom NMA Chairman and Vice Chairman were Impeached The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State chapter, has given reasons why Dr. Emem Abraham, the Chairman, and Dr. Aniekan Utuk, the Vice Chairman was impeached during Ordinary General Congress held on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the NMA Secretariat, Kilometer 8 Nwaniba road, Akwa Ibom State. The ousted chairman, Dr. Abraham, and his executive were sworn in on July 16, 2022, and were supposed to serve until July 17, 2024, before the impeachment on charges of abuse of office, misuse of funds, and high-handedness. In the wake of the impeachment, a motion was put forward and accepted by Congress to appoint Dr. Usenobong Morgan, the Association's Secretary, as the Acting Chairman. This decision was ratified by a vote of 61 in favor and 13 against. Giving a briefing to the press on Monday, June 3 at the Doctor's Mess, Dr. Morgan revealed that the impeached Chairman and Vice Chairman were removed from their positions after five months of running the NMA Akwa Ibom State without a budget while spending millions of naira. Furthermore, they presented a financial statement for a free medical outreach that only accounted for six million naira out of a total of thirty-four million naira. Dr. Morgan also listed other reasons for the impeachment, including violations of the NMA National Constitution and Akwa Ibom State Bye-laws, unjustifiably removing members from the association's WhatsApp group, discrepancies in committee reports, failure to provide income details for the NMA Creche, high-handedness, impersonating the Secretary in official communication, and illegally suspending key figures within the association. Additionally, Dr. Morgan called for the immediate withdrawal of privileges and recognition bestowed on the impeached Chairman and Vice Chairman, emphasizing the importance of informing the public about the leadership changes within the association. "As the Secretary of the NMA, I have assumed the role of Acting Chairman following the impeachment of the Chairman and Vice Chairman. I am here to notify everyone that this change has occurred and to request that, in accordance with the congress resolution, all forms of recognition and privileges conferred upon the suspended individuals should cease and be withdrawn, as the congress has appointed me as the Acting Chairman," he stated.

Demolition: Residents of former Nitel close lead protest to Government House ...as stranded widows, tenants call on Gov. Umo Eno to revisit area Residents of the former Nitel close along Brooks Street in Uyo have decried the sudden eviction notice and demolition of properties by the Akwa Ibom State Government. The protesters staged a peaceful demonstration at the entrance of the Government House in Uyo on Saturday, June 1, 2024, saying that some people alleged to be from the State Ministry of Lands and Water Resources came out to write inscriptions on the walls of their buildings which reads: " Remove, Govt Land " on Friday, 31 May 2024. The protesters who are residents of Nung Uyo community, Offot Clan of Uyo LGA (along Brooks street) expressed shock that they are asked to vacate their houses within 24 hours, having lived in the community for many years, paying rent to their respectively landlords without any issues of illegalities on the said land. They queried the hasty moves by the Ministry of Lands without any official notice or given ample time to plan their relocation or discuss compensations with the Akwa Ibom State Government. The residents call on Governor Umo Eno, being a compassionate leader to please revisit the matter to hear their plea and save them from becoming homeless. Demolition of the old Nitel Building has been partly done with a part left in ruins and debris, while many adjoining houses have been earmarked for demolition.

REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS OF HENSHAW-LED ADMINISTRATION IN OKOBO* By Comrade Henshaw Essien & Atuekong Paul The tradition of commemorating the first 100 days in office finds its roots in President Franklin D. Roosevelt's tenure in the United States. Assuming office in 1933 amid the Great Depression, Roosevelt set a precedent by swiftly addressing challenges and delivering tangible improvements to the lives of Americans. Since then, this benchmark has been applied to nearly all political office holders, including Presidents, Governors, and Chairmen of Local Government councils, serving as a yardstick to gauge their early achievements and commitments to governance. In Okobo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, Chairman of the Transition Committee, has not only met but surpassed expectations within his first 100 days in office. The achievements of this great Okobo leader encompass impactful initiatives in rural road grading, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and peace-building, showcasing exemplary leadership and unwavering dedication to the welfare of Okobo people. Addressing newsmen who visited the Local Government Council Secretariat at Okopedi on a fact-finding mission on Monday, Hon. Engr. Henshaw used the occasion to debunk all yellow journalism reports in two newspapers about him and Okobo Local Government, stating that they were all falsehoods. The council boss emphasized his excellent relationship with stakeholders of Okobo, his Transition Committee members, and all staff of the council, stating that he operates with each Okobo person as if they were his family members and would never shortchange anyone. Flanked by principal officers in the council, the Head of Service, Directors, and all members of his Transition Committee, the former councillor told journalists that the first thing he did as chairman was to meet with stakeholders, royal fathers, and chiefs in the area to inform them of the planned grading of roads in all the wards. According to him, he had allowed all supervisors, representing their respective wards, to take the grader to their wards, saying, "To the glory of God, most rural roads across all our wards have been graded." Henshaw observed that one of the most treasured achievements of his administration is the ongoing construction of the Okobo Local Government Legislative Chamber, which he said would be completed with state-of-the-art facilities and in line with best practices. Regarding transparency in governance, the Okobo Chairman mentioned that his administration is like an open book since he is holding the office in trust for his people. He emphasized that there was no project he embarked upon without discussing it at the Finance and General Purpose Committee (FGPC), where all members have their inputs. Concerning rural transformation, the civil engineer-turned politician stated, "I come from an area where we haven't had access to clean water for decades, the only one we have, I gave to them when I was a councillor." He noted that his 100 days in office have witnessed transformation in this area, providing clean water to villages that previously had none. In agriculture, the council boss said his administration had since taken stock of the needs of farmers in the area and concluded plans to invest massively in plantations, where they will donate hundreds of thousands of suckers across all the wards to generate substantial income for the entire local government and for export. Regarding health, Engr. Henshaw mentioned plans to conduct medical outreach and surgeries for at least 500 Okobo people. In maintaining peace and security in Okobo, Hon. George Henshaw emphasized his efforts to ensure unity and cohesion, stressing that the hitherto fragments and factions were a thing of the past in Okobo. On the lingering communal clash between Amangmong and Okopedi, Henshaw hinted that peace had since returned to the warring communities. Though a huge sum of money has been channeled to permanently cease the communal clash, the chairman said he was happy and that his administration has also opened the road that was causing the fight and concluded plans to bring an illustrious daughter of Oro Nation; Deputy Governor of the State, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, to come and plant trees in the problem area. He used the occasion to thank the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for initiating the construction of the 13.5km Okopedi-Oron-East Way road with an 80-meter span bridge, a project he said was crucial for Oro Nation's connectivity and economic growth. Henshaw also eulogized the State Chief Executive for his people-centric leadership and exceptional performance, pledging the support of his people to the ARISE agenda. Collaborating with the council boss, the Supervisor for Information, Hon. Dennis Antigha, who spoke on behalf of all members of the Transition Committee, exonerated the chairman from false allegations in the media, stressing that Hon. Henshaw is the best chairman the area has ever had. Meanwhile, the high point of the event was touring and showcasing some of the projects embarked upon by the George Henshaw-led administration within his first 100 days in office.

...Scores Ibiono Ibom Local Govt High on Performance By TheHILL Reporter & Atuekong Paul As eulogies and commendations continue to pour in for the people-centric leadership and exceptional performance of Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, the Secretary of the Ibiono Ibom Local Government Transition Committee, Hon. Asuakak Umoh, after being satisfied with the awe-inspiring performance, stated that Eno deserves a second term. The Ibiono Ibom Council Secretary dropped this hint on Friday at Okoita while answering questions from newsmen during an inspection tour of ongoing projects embarked upon by the Hon. Nsikakabasi Ukobot-led administration. Giving his fair assessment of the Umo Eno-led government, nine months since assuming office, the Council Scribe observed that the gargantuan achievements, projects, and programmes in Ibiono Ibom, in particular, and the other 30 Local Government Areas of the State, show that the Governor came into office prepared. Hon. Umoh lauded Pastor Eno for awarding a massive Ring Road construction from Julius Berger yard in Idoro Uyo to Ibiono Ibom, which cuts across many villages in Ibiono Ibom to Hensek Integrated Services. He said that the people of Ibiono Ibom were grateful that there is indeed a governor who understands their plight regarding bad roads and goes all out to solve them. According to the Council Secretary, Pastor Eno has also mobilized the road construction giants, Westgate Global Trust, to the site, expressing happiness that the Cardinal Ekandem Road was ongoing at the fastest speed with quality job done as well. He noted that the Umo Eno administration will soon provide the Ibiono Ibom people with a state-of-the-art General Hospital at Okoita, a massive Skill Acquisition Centre at Ikot Ada Idem, a Model Secondary School at Ikot Ekop, among several other projects. He stressed that Ibiono Ibom has never fared this well under any administration in the State since its creation, and for these reasons and more, the people, according to him, have assured to massively support the Umo Eno-led government to the end, and will be the first to contribute money for Pastor Umo Eno's re-election forms. Answering a question from a reporter, Hon. Umoh opined that the Ibiono Ibom Local Council has achieved more than any other council since their swearing-in in December 2023. He thanked Gov. Umo Eno for the rare opportunity and the Hon. Nsikakabsi Ukoobot-led administration in Ibiono Ibom for championing superlative performance, to the admiration of all in Ibiono Ibom. The Former Councillor observed that the Council Chairman, with the support of principal officers and the entire members of the Transition Committee in Ibiono Ibom, has recorded tremendous success in all important sectors, namely, Agriculture, Education, Human Capital Development, Infrastructure, Rural Development, amongst others. In agriculture, Hon. Umoh mentioned that the council is distributing seedlings to farmers for free as the farming season kicks off, aiming to eradicate hunger from the local government. He also listed achievements within the first 100 days in office of the Ukobot-led administration in Ibiono Ibom, including the flagging off of medical outreach for Ibiono Ibom people, opening of a Cooperative for women of Ibiono with seed fund, ongoing construction of a civic centre at Idoro Community in the Northern part of Ibiono Ibom, grading and provision of access road to the people of Ikpanya, whose roads are in deplorable condition, making it easier for them to use the road for farming and other engagements. Other achievements include the renovation of the Council Secretariat, which was in a bad state after its construction more than two decades ago by the first administration in the area, equipping offices of principal officers, as well as completing the fence at the Council Secretariat. In education, the Council Secretary said a large number of Ibiono Ibom students are currently being trained in ICT, while those seeking admissions into universities have been given free JAMB forms with all expenses paid for by the Council and a substantial amount given to the Ibiono Ibom Students Worldwide Association to help them focus on their studies. Hon. Umoh mentioned that the current administration is also investing massively in environmental sanitation as it has embarked on massive desilting of drains at Okoita, even as over 200 youths who own SMEs are currently receiving substantial amounts from the local government to put into their businesses to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal. Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Ibiono Ibom Local Government Transition Committee, Hon. Asuakak Umoh, expressed gratitude to the Umo Eno-led administration in the State for the massive support given to all Local Government Councils in the State, which has enabled Ibiono Ibom to deliver massive dividends of democracy within 100 days in office to her people. He promised Ibiono Ibom people's support for his ARISE agenda at all times.

2023 Poll: Atiku is the conviction for a better Nigeria - James Iniama Mr. James Iniama is a staunch supporter and believer in the ambition of Waziri Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Hear him - "Waziri Atiku Abubakar and PDP will take over power at the Aso Rock after 2023 general elections in Nigeria". Iniama is a member of the PDP Presidential campaign Council. In this exclusive interaction with UDEME UTIP, the renowned Estate Surveyor and Valuer who was in the race for the soul of Akwa Ibom State until May, 25, 2022, expressed optimism that Atiku will be declared winner of the 2023 presidential election come Feb. 25, 2023. Excerpts: You are known as a close ally of the PDP presidential candidate in the February 25 election, Waziri Atiku Abubakar over the years, What would you say has sustained the relationship? Well, I will not lay claim to monopoly of friendship with Waziri Atiku Abubakar because I am fully aware that he has a multitude of friends across the length and breadth of the country and beyond. He has political friends, social friends, businesss friends and men of renown as friends. He keeps international friends. He makes friendships out of his philanthropic services to humanity. He has made friends because of his flare for educational investments and development. So, Waziri Atiku Abubakar is a man who keeps relationships and he has a knowledge of the men who come to him and the relationships go a long way. For the number of years I've known him, I can say as well that he is faithful to his relationships with them. So I would say that one of the things I have found endearing about him is that he is not a uni-directional individual. Atiku Abubakar is a business man and as you very well know, I am a business man. He is a politician and I enjoy politicking. Atiku is a leader and I love his Leadership style. You will find out as well in Atiku Abubakar's leadership style, that he is a very loyal follower. So for these years I have known him, I don't find anything that is discriminatory and offensive about him or anything that is particularly personal about him. He is a man that gives his life in the interest of all. With those bits I've found about Atiku, I have loved to work with him. I first got to know Atiku on the platform of the People's Democratic Movement [PDM]. I won't be vast with details on the founding of this movement, but I know that Late General Yar' Adua and his friends were the founders, and Atiku Abubakar was there. I met him again when he became Vice President of this country. I have been part of his political life and activities. There has been every reason why I will just stick to our relationship. For all of us who seek leadership in this nation, the focus is the service of Nigeria and if there's anything contrary to the nation or country Nigeria, then that aspiration doesn't have value. You will find with Atiku Abubakar that his burden and resolve is all about a great and better Nigeria. His leadership agenda has always been geared towards the common good of the nation. Those are some of the things I've found about him and his every political movement. When we founded Advanced Congress of Democrats [ACD], I was there, and when the negotiation was held to merge ACD with AD to found Action Congress [AC], I was with him. Do not forget that he contested the presidential election on the platform of Action Congress. I was gladly there with him and of course, that is when I was the governorship candidate of AC in Akwa Ibom State. So for me, there is every reason for me and approximately the 200 million Nigerians to find Atiku Abubakar trustworthy and deserving of the presidency of this country. He fits it. He has contested a few times before now but couldn't make it to Aso Rock, what gives you the hope that your friend would have a chance this time around? People have passions and dreams and as I said, I have known Atiku Abubakar. He is a man who lives by his convictions, he has lived by the dream he has of a new Nigeria and he is driven by this dream and it is not to question what the chances are. He is the President. 29th February will tell. Atiku Abubakar has made bare his dreams for Nigeria to Nigerians backèd by a very capable presidential campaign council and Nigerians have heard him clearly. I have heard him clearly and I can tell you; never have I been more convinced than I am today that he is the next president of Nigeria. I had told you that I have known Atiku for many years. I have known him to be a man who has purpose, I have known him to be focused and unyielding on issues he believes in. He is unwavering. I know he carries the dream of the new Nigeria and if I find a man who Identifies with the dream of the Nigerian people, that is the person who deserves the support of the Nigerian people. He is a worthy servant. Did you follow his campaigns and interactions closely? He did not only outline the Nigerian challenges, but went ahead to profer solutions. If you ask me, Atiku Abubakar is the president of Nigeria beginning 29th May, 2023. It is not an issue for questioning, even if we have to put the plans and programmes of other candidates for the people on a scale, Waziri Atiku Abubakar towers above all. Nigerians must not be driven by the sentiments of statistical data rhetorics that are inapplicable to our circumstances. We appeal to Nigerians to listen to the realities of issues brought to the table by Presidential candidates. We must not be taken advantage of on account of the woeful state of affairs. Let's look at the knowledge and the ability of the respective Presidential Candidates to address those challenges. I haven't heard these presidential candidates tell us in clear terms how they want to confront insecurity, food insufficiency, how they plan to deal with the industrial problems of the nation. Only Atiku does It is not enough to tell me you will make Nigeria a productive economy... but How? Some people told us in 2015 presidential election campaigns that they will make the Naira to be at parity with the dollar. That has not happened. Rather, things are getting worse. I have heard my presidential candidate and by the grace of God the next president of Nigeria tell me the how. That candidate is Waziri Atiku Abubakar. He is the president. You're from the South-South region of the country and it is obvious that your people, some leaders of your party to be specific, are not comfortable with another Northern president after President Buhari. They had wanted a Southern president. How would you reconcile that or do you share in their emotions? When you say my people, I am sure you are talking about the South and political leaders or the leadership of the PDP from the South. The Leadership of the PDP went into a negotiating room even before the primaries of the political Parties. We don't know what they negotiated and what transpired at negotiation. If they were very clear as to what they negotiated or did not agree on, we will not be hearing and seeing some of the things we hear and see. If they were unanimous in disagreement with what they negotiated, I mean somebody like Governor Udom Emmanuel, we know him for his character, won't stand down and accept the chairmanship of of PDP presidential campaign council, the governor of Delta state will not accept the Vice Presidency of this country. You see, these are men of principle. You go into a negotiating room and the negotiation collapses, then you will need to let your followers understand what you negotiated and agreed on. But the issue that became a screamer is the resignation of the National Chairman. We don't mind Atiku Abubakar continuing as our presidential candidate; that is what we heard in the streets. We are talking of the presidency of Nigeria. I would have been satisfied if we were firm to say no to the participation of a Northern PDP Presidential Aspirant in the party primary. For me, I have assumed that the South-South political Leaders in the PDP opened the door to the Presidential Aspirants of the North. Thereafter, we found ourselves box and can't do otherwise. We are loyal followers ànd we remain in the party to follow. Do you think the activities of the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike could have negative effect on the presidential ambition of Atiku Abubakar and by extension PDP? Well, I don't know what Governor Nyesom Wike is doing. I don't live in Rivers State. I am a member of the People's Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State and not in Rivers. Whatever he is doing I concede to him that he is a leader and has the right to act as he deems fit. But I also like Nigerians to be conscious of the fact that the people of Rivers State have their understanding of what they want in Nigeria and the election of the 25th of February 2023. They are politically enlightened so they won't be led otherwise in the exercise of their franchise. We cannot for the time being say that it will be positive or negative but we are sure that our party will win even in Rivers State. As an entrepreneur, you are in position to advise your friend whom you are so optimistic is the next president of Nigeria: what would be topmost on your priority list, considering the policies that will make Nigeria work again? If I'm given an opportunity to talk with my Presidential candidate, I will say as a priority, let's confront insecurity head on. As a young man in this country, I used to drive alone at night from Calabar to Kaduna and from Calabar to Lagos without the fear of bandits, kidnappers, etc. But all that changed. I would advice him to confront insecurity head long I do not know anybody that said "If I perish, I perish" and perished. Damn everybody and interests. He has to confront it in all the states. Let us have peace and security in this nation so that lives will return to normalcy. Again what I will say is that we must make deliberate policies that stimulate the micro and small scale enterprises. We must be deliberate in the programs that stimulate agricultural investment. We must not look at the mono economy again. Thankfully there is a diversification of our economy in recent times but we must give life to it. I believe when we do these and secure safety to life and property, people are happy and they are moving freely for their businesses, we will begin to return to the days of Glory. But listen to this I will tell my president we must de-emphasize ethnicity, tribalism, nepotism and religious bigotry in our national lives. These have killed Nigeria. Everything we do today is seen in the prism of what village you come from, what ethnic group you come from, ŵhere and what you worship. We must insist on remaining a secular. It is our secularity that should be non-negotiable. Let's begin to look at competence. Those are the few things I would tell my president. In Akwa Ibom State specifically, Atiku Abubakar is accused of masterminding the liquidation of the Aluminium Smelting Company, Ikot Abasi and NNMC, Oku Iboku. As a business man, what do you think is the implication of this? The site of NNMC and ALSCON leave me bitter most of the time. Do not forget that NNMC is right in my backyard. Incidentally, the businesses of government are marked SECRET, and facts surrounding them are hearsays. I am unable to responsibly comment on the privatisation debate and I doubt very .much that it will impact our electoral fortunes. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was the president when Atiku Abubakar was the Vice. Obasanjo has come out on several occasions to caution Nigerians against trusting his former Vice with the number one office in Nigeria, Do you want to fault the former president sir? This same President Olusegun Obasanjo endorsed Waziri Atiku Abubakar in 2019, didn't he? He endorsed this government of APC that has failed us woefully. How does the same man deny a man he endorsed previously? I would love all Nigerians to look up to God who knows it all. We are only men. We know in parts. The approximately 200 million Nigerians arebat liberty to think and make their choices in life; each Nigerian has the free will to adopt his or her preferred candidate and vote as you please. But, to think we are in a Nigeria that is anymore going to be influenced by the choice of the political leaders is an error because these leaders failed us woefully in their endorsements previously. So, I don't need to worry my head over such cautions. Sir, what do you have to tell Nigerians out there concerning Saturday, 25th February, 2023? Well, I would say that up to this moment, I will commend the Independent National Electoral Commission. I will also say we have the Electoral Act 2022 that is helping in at least smoothening the rough edges of our political process. We are not there yet. I was born in this country before it became an independent nation and I have not been able to find comfort anywhere else in this world except Nigeria. There is no country we have been given by God like Nigeria, Nigeria is ours. We all have equal rights to this country. Please love Nigeria, guard the affairs of Nigeria jealously. On the 25th of February, go out and vote for that candidate you know will take this nation out of the present darkness. And I have spoken about Waziri Atiku Abubakar as the only presidential candidate that resolve the current Nigeria crises. That is my conviction. That is what I have to say. Atiku fits it. You have not spoken about Akwa Ibom State and the forthcoming elections. What are the chances of PDP in the face of litigations and the growing presence of the other political parties? The position of Akwa Ibom State is very unique. God has favoured PDP in Akwa Ibom State and we are confident all the PDP candidates will be returned elected.

*NDUESE ESSIEN AND HIS SATANIC VITUPERATION AGAINST EPHRAIM INYANG* By Bright Assam Jnr. As adults, we have learnt vital lessons in life which sometimes we tend to reflect upon in the course of our daily interactions with people of all colours on earth. One of such lessons is - SILENCE IS THE BEST ANSWER TO A FOOL. However, in as much as one might be entitled to his opinions which he owes nobody an apology for any reason whatsoever, he must in every respect make sure those opinions remain within personal jurisdictions, but in a scenario where such opinions have the tendency to influence or distort the thinking of others or affects their wellbeing, then such a person cannot and will never said to be entitle to such opinions. *When people foolishly voice out their opinions to influence the psychology of the gullible few, then it becomes imperative to call them to order for the good of all and sundry* . This prompted the need to call Chief Nduese Essien, a 75 years old native of Nta Isip-Ikot Ibiok, Eket Local Government Area, to order over his recent satanic ejaculation against the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Works, which has Akparawa Ephraim Inyangeyen as the Commissioner. The fact is that, ignorance is communicable and once an ignorant person releases the pheromones of his ignorance with pride, the gullible ones could be tempted to emulate him and in no time, the spread of ignorance becomes imminent. Therefore, it will be heinous not to call Nduese Essien to order, if nothing, to at least lower the spread of his foolishness and attack on the Ministry of Works and by extension, government of Akwa Ibom State. I listened to the recent radio interview Nduese Essien granted on Planet Fm and read a news items on the social media with dismay and at the same time pity the way the former Federal Lawmaker’s half baked-truths and vexatious fallacies derided the state Commissioner for Works, Akparawa Ephraim Inyang which perhaps catalyse the adrenaline to dilute his gross verbal stupidity and educate him a little bit. *NDUESE ESSIEN'S SATANIC LIES*: The short Nduese claims that the Commissioner for Works hates his (Eket) people and has no respect for anyone. Nduese further said that thing that is giving him migraine is that Ephraim is the one who counts the properties to be demolished to make way for road construction, Ephraim is the only one who determines the value of the properties and does the payment alone. What an illogical, fallacious and senseless claim. Well, it is obvious that the garrulous former Minister is either blind to the reality on ground in the State or is outrightly mischievous. The truth is that Mr Ephraim Inyang-eyen, has ensured that absolute sanity was restored to the process of payment of compensation since he was appointed Commissioner for Works. Since assumption of office and till date, the Ministry has two stages of valuation; having a private Valuer and a government Valuer who would value independently before the Ministry will come to a compromise after assessing the two Valuers’ records. After choosing the record, the Ministry will then appoint a financial consultant to pay the compensation to properties owners to avoid miss management and cut out third parties who defrauded the system before now. During the payment process, each beneficiary must come to collect his/her cheque or cash with a nationally acceptable Identity Card alongside two (2) copies of passport photographs. If it is a family property, the family will write the Ministry of works that they have conceded the power of attorney to one of them to act on behalf of the family hence giving powers to the Ministry to issue the cheque in the name of the family member. This procedure has reduced drastically controversies and litigation against Government as wrong people are not paid the compensation of others and where the Valuer has built in fictitious names of beneficiary without existing properties, such claims, if noticed will be returned to the coffers of Government. Here, Nduese Essien has goofed! *WHY NDUESE ESSIEN RUNS AMOK*: Ephraim Inyang-eyen has gone against the warped norms established in the past where monies meant for compensation were inflated, dismembered and shared like the 'Christmas cow'. To Nduese, this is an unpardonable abomination. How dare Ephraim not handover the compensation monies to us the stakeholders of Eket to handle? Does he know Eket people better than me? The list of questions is endless. With this rare transparency and honesty by a politician in a clime that has no respect for morality and godliness, Ephraim Inyangeyen should be ready to get detested, abhorred, and blackmailed. But how comforting is it to note that, Apostle Paul in his second letter to young Timothy as recorded in the Bible book of *2 Timothy 3:12* had foretold that “ *everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted* ”! However, no matter the recent campaign of calumny and tissue of lies by Nduese Essien, the educated people of Akwa Ibom know that the destructive media war and demonic falsehood against Commissioner Inyang-eyen will never be attractive to neither the governor nor sane Akwa Ibomites; hence they always wave the destructive blackmail with the back of their hands. What Nduese Essien needs to understand is that he cannot bring Ephraim down, not even his ogboni fraternity cult can. I however pity those who see Nduese as a role model, because all they will be gaining from their role model is gross ignorance, hypocrisy, irresponsibility, and a large chunk of dedicative immorality. Calling anyone nduese essien in Akwa Ibom today, is a cool and polite way of saying that person is *MORONIC* Assam wrote from Effoi in Eket LGA.

Understanding Akwa Ibom's 2019 Budget (1) *Otobong Sampson, Uyo* *November 19, 2018* Christened 'Budget of Industrialization and Poverty Alleviation,' Akwa Ibom Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 laid out his administration's plans for the state for the 2019 fiscal year. A total of 670.718 billion naira is the proposed budget size. 445.936 billion naira is earmarked for capital expenditure, Consolidated Revenue Fund Charges is pegged at 127.686 billion naira while recurrent expenditure will take 97.096 billion naira. The budget is set with projection at sixty dollar per barrel international oil price, production rate of 2.3million barrels per day and a forecasted exchange rate of 305 naira to one US dollar. This is in alignment with the computations of National Budget Benchmark. Between November 5 and 11, oil price in the international market fluctuated between the opening prices of 56.02 dollar and 62.99 while closing prices were between 56.46 and 63.10. So 60 is a decent projection even with surging market volatility. The Industrialization and Poverty Alleviation Budget guided by the International Public Sector Account (IPSAS) could not have come at a better time. It seeks basically to build on the economic momentum of the moment and to consolidate on the huge gains of the last three-plus years. The 2019 budget is expected to concretize government industrialization efforts, create more jobs and drive the policy to a logical conclusion. In line with the administration's five point agenda, the estimates indicate a bold resolve to reduce poverty levels, stimulate wealth creation and generate employment opportunities. The gap between capital expenditures and recurrent can only mean one thing: the administration is navigating the steering of development in the right direction. Agriculture will play a vital role in the success of the 2019 budget. The sector is to enjoy generous funding with the sum of 13.064 billion naira. The expansion of this sector by the Udom administration has contributed in no small measure to the industrial growth of the state and its blossoming economic activities. In Nigeria, agriculture still leads in sectoral ranking and remains the biggest labour employer. In Akwa Ibom, about 75% of the people either live on or are supported by agricultural endeavours in an economy that's largely agro-based. Government has made conscious efforts and developed sustainable strategies to re-direct the state's focus away from crude oil to agriculture. From cocoa, rice, tomato and cucumber cultivation; the coconut plantation for its oil, animal production and husbandry and several others, government is making the sector both attractive and rewarding. For health, the 18.021 billion proposed sum validates the assertion that the governor has given special attention to the health needs of his people since he assumed office in 2015. It is a significant increase from last year's 8.210 billion naira budget. It is important to state that the administration runs free medical services for children under the age of five and for pregnant women too. There are other myriad intervention actions by government. Recently, the governor inaugurated a 88year old hitherto abandoned general hospital in Ituk Mbang, Uruan. This action was quickly followed by an equally tastefully renovated and well equipped general hospital in Oruk Anam. So far, five general hospitals including St. Luke in Anua, Etinan General Hospital and Ikono General Hospital have been resuscitated to function maximally with state-of-the-art medical equipments to meet the health needs of the people both in the rural areas and urban centres. The hospital in Uruan, fully digitalized like the others, has the biggest accident and emergency department because of its proximity to the state capital. Other such centres are undergoing renovation and rehabilitation in Ikot Okoro, Eket; Okobo and Oron. A saying goes: health is wealth! This understanding has ensured the present administration continues to develop and implement programmes and policies, as well as, undertaking other necessary actions that will further enhance the state healthcare delivery system for effective, efficient, affordable and even free health services. The education sector will enjoy more funding too with an increase of about five billion naira compared to 2018. While the government has shown sufficient commitment in this sector, it understandably faces new, rising challenges. It has remain undaunted in conquering these challenges, however. From infrastructures to teaching personnel; training and re-training of educators; facilities, equipments and materials that drive 21st century education, the sector has witnessed monumental strides under Governor Emmanuel. The days ahead can expectedly be brighter in a state in which over 450 public schools have been renovated and completely transformed, over 5000 new teachers employed and free education offered, including payment of WAEC fees for students, that gulp more than 600million naira yearly. Education is the driver of modern development and builder of societies. This explains why Governor Emmanuel has committed so much resources into the foundational education of Akwa Ibom's future leaders as well as investing significantly in state-owned higher institutions. These include; Akwa Ibom State University, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, and College of Education, Afaha Nsit. Only recently, the Afaha Nsit College became a degree awarding institution.

EXPOSED! How Nsima Ekere, Akpabio Engineered Ikot Ekpene Defections *...PDP Defectors Forced To Swear To Fetish Oath in Ukana For Car, Millions* Story by Nsikak Umana Startling revelations have emerged as factors that ensured the defection of two former ward chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ikot Ekpene to the opposition All Progressive Congress in the last one week. First to defect from the PDP to the APC was Mr. Ndifreke Ekum (Alias Udoudo) of Ward 1. He was joined days later in the opposition party by his counterpart in Ward 6. Both of them were given brand new SUVs and several millions of naira for switching allegiance. Pictures of the cars were trended on social media with Barr. Ibanga Akpabio, a cousin to Senator Akpabio posing respectively with each beneficiary. However, sordid details of the defection deals came to the fore when a serving PDP councillor in Ikot Ekpene was invited to the Ukana home of Senator Godswill Akpabio in Essien Udim for a meeting. Present at the meeting were former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, Nse Ntuen - Member representing Essien Udim State Constituency, Barr. Ibanga Akpabio, SUPOL Idoreyin Akpabio and Uyo Nathaniel, Chief Security Officer to the Managing Director of NDDC, Mr. Nsima Ekere. Ekere is Akwa Ibom APC governorship candidate for the 2019 election. During the meeting, the councillor was told that his defection was important to them so they (APC) could get at least three other councilors from Ikot Ekpene to also join them in APC. Right before him, the sum of two million naira was pulled out from a big Calabash in Ukana for him. He was also told a brand new car would be immediately given to him if he agreed to place his hand on the Calabash and swear to oath of loyalty. The oath administrator was Idoreyin Akpabio, a serving Superintendent of Police and a relative of former Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio. Apparently aware that the money was fetish with deadly consequences, the councillor rejected the cash and car offer and asked those in the meeting to allow him get home first and lure other councilors (his colleagues) in the PDP. This was to ensure that left the venue in safety as he was beginning to fear for his life. The conveners of the Ukana meeting granted his request but insisted on him taking twenty thousand naira for 'transport money'. Still, the councillor rejected the money and pleaded to be given some time to convince some of his colleagues so he won't be defecting in isolation. Last week, confiding in a close source on why he abandoned PDP to join APC, Mr. Ndifreke Ekum (Udoudo), the former Ward 1 chairman had squealed that he found himself in a place and position he couldn't argue or turned down the offers that were made him by prominent members of the APC. It can be confirmed that he swore to the diabolical Calabash in an oath of loyalty as insisted by his 'benefactors'. A top party man of the All Progressive Congress had, while commenting on Ekum's defection disclosed that a brand new SUV, three million naira cash and a cheque of two million were offered as bait to win over the former PDP ward chairman. Ekum was reportedly driven to a car stand by Barr. Ibanga Akpabio after funds were made available by the Managing Director of NDDC and APC governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom, Mr. Nsima Ekere and asked to choose an SUV of his choice. |

Senate: Why PDP Should Run With Dr. (Mrs) Akon Eyakenyi In few days, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would decide who gets its nod to contest the 2019 Senate election for Eket Senatorial District. As aspirants generally prepare to face the nomination hurdle of the party, anxieties expectedly have heightened. For election to the red chamber of Nigeria's national parliament as it concerns Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, one aspirant has markedly stood out as an ideal candidate who is best suited for the job. Dr. Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi, a former federal minister and her candidacy appeals more both to the delegates of the party and the electorate. Unlike the other two districts of Akwa Ibom, the District of Eket has since the advent of the present democratic dispensation in 1999 established and maintained a commendable political design that encourages gender equality and promotes gender equity for the office in contention. It is an unwritten yet firm procedure. It is understandable then if the people of the District have come to regard it as a norm. Beyond these considerations, she has campaigned the most and effectively too, touring not only the three federal constituencies that comprise the District but also its twelve local government areas. She has 'preached' the message of Governor Udom Emmanuel's reelection vigorously and with fierce passion in the process. She has built critical bridges across party lines that are capable of giving the PDP victory in the general election. In Eket federal constituency, her efficient campaign has secured about ninety percent of delegates' votes based on research and poll. In Ikot Abasi federal constituency, she has sealed it at ninety five percent. In Oron her home constituency, beyond ninety percent of delegates queuing behind her, Oro elders are also backing her for the job. It would then be unjust, unfair and rather cruel to shove her aside and stop her emergence as the candidate of the party on grounds of gender. Leadership conscription should focus more on values, above other variables. Akwa Ibom should discourage a system that attempts to be vicious in its psychological treatment of women who dare to aspire for political office. The former minister though has manifested admirable capacity for survival over the time. Approachable and easily accessible, it was on these considerations that she was adopted and generally accepted as the candidate of preference across board in the three federal constituencies in a meeting that was well attended by elders and party stakeholders in the District. For all reasons, our society must inhume permanently the crass exhibition of gender discrimination in politics and not give it any gloss of rational defense. Our women must not be compelled to accept the notion of male dominance or superiority in politics. Dr. Mrs. Eyakenyi is bold, pleasantly tough, astute and cerebral. These are the stuffs worthy senators are made of. |
