Education / UI Bans 'Skimpy' Dresses by jackbauer: 7:07am On Jul 05, 2007
The University of Ibadan has banned‘skimpy’ and revealing dresses among its female students.

It has also taken steps on eradicating cultism by asking its students to sign an undertaking not to belong to any unregistered group in the institution.

At the orientation programme for new students of the Distance Learning Centre of the university on Wednesday, the students were given a code of ethics and dress code.

According to the code, all female students are expected to dress decently and avoid revealing clothes.

“Anything tight, scant, backless, see through, low in the neckline or revealing the midriff is immodest and unethical and will not be allowed,” the students were told.

Male students were also told to abstain from wearing ragged or torn jeans as well as earrings. They were told that braiding of hair by men would not be allowed.

All the students signed an undertaking that they would not join any cult; while those who were already members of a cult group were given the chance to renounce.

They were told that anyone later found to belong to any cult would not only be dismissed, but also prosecuted
Education / ASUU Suspends Strike by jackbauer: 1:09am On Jul 02, 2007
The President of ASUU, Dr. Abdullahi Sule-Kano, said the National Executive Council of the union took the decision following intervention by President Umaru Yar‘Adua, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Patricia Etteh, and the Senate.

Sule-Kano, who spoke at a news conference in Abuja on Sunday also said that the decision to suspend the strike was in recognition of the intervention by other well-meaning Nigerians and traditional rulers.

He, however, warned the government against reneging on its promise to revamp the university system.

The ASUU president said, “Given the assurances, the pleas of our students and parents, the National Executive Council of our union, at an emergency meeting held on Saturday, June 30, at the University of Abuja, resolved to suspend the current industrial action effective 12 midnight of Sunday, July 1. All lecturers are to resume all academic activities accordingly.”

The ASUU leader said the union noted particularly the firm signals emanating from the government to reinstate the 49 lecturers of the University of Ilorin.

The lecturers were sacked in violation of the non-victimisation clause in the 2001 FG-ASUU Agreement, which was a result of an out-of-court settlement.

Sule-Kano added that the union took cognisance of the assurance of the government to employ the principle of collective bargaining, and to address the rot and brain drain in the universities by establishing internationally-competitive standards.

He said the government also indicated interest in the peculiarity of the work of university scholars and the need to remove them from the civil service framework, especially as it relates to pensions and consolidation.

He said that the government equally showed a firm signal to improve on the funding of the university system through increased budgetary allocations and exploitation of extra-budgetary sources of funding.

The ASUU boss said that in weighing the interventions, “the NEC particularly considered as serious, the pronouncement of the President on the srike and his assurances to resolve the issues in the interest of education and development of Nigeria.”
