Health / How Rich Or Poor You Are May Determine Your Health by Jahelastic(m): 6:26pm On Nov 28, 2016 |
A group of researchers have shown that your social status — that is, how rich or poor you are — will also determine how healthy you’re likely to be The scientists, led by an Assistant Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology and Biology at Duke University, Jenny Tung, warn that the difference in life expectancy between the rich and the poor is estimated to be 14.6 years. In other words, the richer you are, the more likely you are to live long. The group of scientists who carried out the research at the Yerkes National Primate Research Centre of Emory University, United States of America, conclude that poverty has the tendency to destroy or alter a person’s immune system. The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body. One of the important cells involved are white blood cells, which combine to seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances. The researchers warn that in America, for instance, people in the lowest socio-economic bracket are more prone to heart disease and diabetes. “Several factors are responsible for this, though; and they include disparity in access to medical care and differences in habits such as exercise, diet, and smoking,” the researchers note. They assert that it is becoming evident that the chronic stress of life that the poor are generally exposed to can negatively influence the way in which the immune system functions. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/how-rich-or-poor-you-are-may-determine.html?m=0

Crime / We Are Conductors By Day, Robbers By Night – Suspects by Jahelastic(m): 11:30pm On Nov 26, 2016 |
Two bus conductors, 22-year-old Lateef Sodiq and 21-year-old Tunde Lawal, have been nabbed by men of the Lagos State Command after robbing a motorist of his Honda saloon car. The duo are members of a car-snatching gang operating in Lagos. According to the suspects, they “supplement” their work as bus conductors with robbery. Sodiq told our correspondent that he was arrested in a bus by men of the Alakara Police Division, Lagos, who were already on his trail without his knowledge. He said that on Wednesday, after concluding his bus conducting duty, he went to meet other members of his gang and they snatched the Honda at Sabo area of Yaba, Lagos and dumped the driver of the vehicle at Obanikoro along Ikorodu Road. He said, “We did not beat the owner of the vehicle, we just asked him for the security codes of the car. “This is the second time I would follow the gang to snatch a vehicle. I was given N50,000 the first time my gang took me along on an operation. Our leader is called Coded. He has not been caught since he ran way. “I have been an armed robber for just one month. I came to Lagos from my state, Kwara, last year when I could no longer stand the farming business my father forced me into when he could no longer sponsor me to school. “Now, I really feel bad about what I have done. I regret my life now. By the grace of God, if I am released, I will run back to my village immediately.” Sodiq said he was not educated beyond primary school. “When I finished primary six, my father did not have money for me to continue schooling,” he said. Lawal on the other hand, explained that he thought robbery would be an easier job than his normal bus conducting work. “My work as a bus conductor is a tough job. that’s why I decided to join the robbery gang. But now, I know better, the problem in robbery is worse. I wish I can just be released to go back to my conductor business,” he said. Lawal explained that he was introduced to the gang by Sodiq. According to him, the gang gave him the duty of ransacking any vehicle they snatched and gathering every valuable found in such vehicles. “I don’t hold a gun, all I did was gather money, phones and other valuables,” he said. The Oyo State indigene said he did not know other members of the gang except Sodiq. He said the first operation he participated in, they were almost arrested when the police chased them but they escaped. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, has said efforts were being made to arrest other members of the gang. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/we-are-conductors-by-day-robbers-by.html?m=0 1 Like

Politics / Corruption Has Made Governance Difficult, Says Gowon by Jahelastic(m): 8:12am On Nov 25, 2016 |
A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), said in Kaduna on Thursday that corruption had made governance in the country difficult. He, therefore, argued that the war against the menace must be decisive. Gowon spoke at the Northern Nigeria Stakeholders’ Town Hall Engagement organised by CITA- NGO at Arewa House, Kaduna. The former Head of State noted that corruption was responsible for the deterioration of the quality of infrastructure, healthcare delivery among others in the country. This, Gowon noted, had robbed the government of the respect and loyalty of the citizens and eroded the authority of the state. Gowon stated, “Truth be told, the fight against corruption is a fight that we must overcome, we must win it and win it decisively. “Corruption has also caused deterioration in the quality of infrastructure, healthcare delivery and education among others.” The former Nigerian leader said the current economic situation facing the country was one of the most troubling economic crisis ever. He added, “I believe that the troubles and problems we have gone through in the past few years have helped Nigerians to see more clearly the difference between a self-sustaining economy and one that relies totally on a wasting asset such as oil.” The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, who was the guest speaker at the event, said the path to growth and prosperity “is investing in basic infrastructure like roads, airports railways and information technology as well as enhancing fiscal policy more than ever before.” Emefile, who was represented by the zonal director of the CBN in Kaduna, Alhaji Ahmed Gusau, said the agricultural sector remained the backbone of the nation’s economy. He said the apex bank had committed N23bn in the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme with active participation across 14 states of the federation. “We are gratified that the CBN’s borrower’s programme, together with other initiatives like Commercial Agricultural Scheme and NIRSAL are proving to be successful in several states,” he said. In his remarks, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki , noted that the role of the CBN in charting monetary policy direction and its economic management role were difficult to understand. The Senate President, who was represented by a former governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wamako, said that the Senate was working to create appropriate legislative interventions to resolve the issues of obsolete regulatory and legal frameworks in the system, reduce cost of doing business, improve investor confidence and reduce obstacles associated with doing business in Nigeria.” https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/corruption-has-made-governance.html?m=0

Politics / Obasanjo Is Grandfather Of Corruption In Nigeria –reps by Jahelastic(m): 7:26am On Nov 25, 2016 |
For describing the National Assembly as being peopled by a gang of unarmed robbers, the House of Representatives has lashed out at ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, calling him the grandfather of corruption. The Reps described Obasanjo as the most corrupt Nigerian that ever held a public office, adding that he, however, saw himself as the only clean human being. Specifically, the House called Obasanjo the “grandfather of corruption” in Nigeria. It added that a reason Obasanjo would never like the members of the National Assembly was the fact that they foiled his third term ambition in 2007 after taking his money and displaying it publicly to put him to shame. The House accused Obasanjo of churning out outright lies and mischievous innuendos against the National Assembly. On Wednesday, Obasanjo had attacked the legislature on several fronts, including their salaries/allowances and the alleged diversion of constituency projects. He had stated, “Once you are a member, you are co-opted and your mouth is stuffed with rottenness and corruption that you cannot opt out as you go home with not less than N15million in a month for a senator and N10m a month for a member of the House of Representatives. The National Assembly is a den of corruption by a gang of unarmed robbers. “If the judiciary is being cleaned, what of the National Assembly, which stinks much worse than the judiciary? Budget padding must not go unpunished. “It is a reality, which is a regular and systemic practice. Nobody should pull the wool over the eyes of Nigerians. Ganging up to intimidate and threaten the life of a whistle-blower is deplorable and undemocratic.’’ But, speaking through its Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, the House said Obasanjo first introduced corruption to the legislature in 1999 when he felt he must bribe legislators to have his way on every issue. On corruption, Namdas noted, “Undoubtedly, former President Obasanjo is understandably angry with the National Assembly as an institution, having foiled his ambition for a third term in office even after trying to corrupt the members with a bribe of at least N50m each. “Lest we forget, the person who introduced corruption to the National Assembly is Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. He birthed the 4th Republic National Assembly with corrupt practices from day one; indeed the first day of the Republic. “He bribed the PDP, ANPP and AD legislators on their inauguration in 1999 to vote against the majority candidate of the PDP, (the late) Dr. Chuba Okadigbo. That was how Senator Evan Enwerem became the Senate President. “Have we forgotten the sacks of money displayed on the floor of the House of Representatives, being bribe money paid by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to some honourable members to impeach the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Ghali N’abba? “Have we forgotten that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo used his position as President to extort businessmen and contractors to build his presidential library? “The list of his corrupt acts while in office is endless. Unquestionably, he is the greatest corrupt person ever to hold office in Nigeria. He remains the grandfather of corruption in Nigeria and lacks the moral authority to discuss corruption or abuse of office in Nigeria as he remains the most corrupt Nigerian on record.” On the allegation of budget padding and abuse of constituency projects, Namdas said the former President, like other Nigerians, should appreciate the responsibilities of the legislature, which he claimed needed additional funding. He explained, “He claimed that the National Assembly’s budget is very high, when by all standards, the National Assembly is grossly underfunded and is hampered from effectively and legitimately carrying out its constitutionally-assigned functions.” The House also observed that Obasanjo had started attacking President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that he was on a familiar path of discrediting any government that would not do his bidding. “It is unfortunate that he has started his very familiar method of bringing down governments. He did it to Alhaji Shehu Shagari, he did it to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, he did the same to Gen. (Ibrahim) Babangida; and he attempted to bring down (the late) Gen. Sani Abacha before he imprisoned him for treason. “He made frantic efforts to derail the government of (the late) President Musa Ya’Ardua when he couldn’t use him. He supported President Goodluck Jonathan, but when he refused to take his dictation, he turned against him. “He supported President Buhari, but since he has sensed that Nigeria is having economic difficulties under him, he has pounced to derail his government.” Calling the former President a “blackmailer”, the House noted that all the issues he raised against Buhari publicly could have been discussed privately with the President since he had unfettered access to Buhari. The Senate on Thursday kept mum on Obasanjo’s recent verbal attack on the National Assembly. Several leaders and members of the upper legislative house declined to reply the ex-President. The Majority Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, who described Obasanjo as a father, said the ex-president would not be engaged in a media war. He said, “I don’t want to take issue with my father. You cannot take issue with your father on the pages of newspapers.” IYC, Mohammed back ex-President But the Ijaw Youth Council and the convener of the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, supported the former President. The National Publicity Secretary of the IYC, Eric Omare, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said, “I think Obasanjo only stated the obvious and it is commendable. Nigerians are tired of Buhari’s excuses, while Nigerians are dying of hunger as a result of his poor economic policies.’’ https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/obasanjo-is-grandfather-of-corruption.html?m=0

Politics / Attempts To Force Me Out Will Break APC – Timi Frank by Jahelastic(m): 6:24pm On Nov 24, 2016 |
Embattled Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Timi Frank, has said the attempt to force him out of the party could spell doom for the APC. Frank said this in Abuja, on Thursday, in response to news that the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee of the party on Wednesday upheld the recommendations of a panel set up by the South South Zone of the party. The panel had recommended for his immediate suspension and subsequent expulsion from the party for making disparaging comments about the party and its chairman in various news outlets over time. Frank threatened to sue the party’s National Chairman for contempt of court since according to him, the latest pronouncement was in contempt of a subsisting court order asking both parties to maintain status quo ante. He challenged the party hierarchy to make public minutes of Tuesday’s NWC meeting where the said decision to uphold the recommendations of the panel was taken. In a statement he personally signed, Frank said, “Any attempt to suspend or expel him from APC will break the party. “I dare the National Chairman to convene NEC meeting and see who will be removed between two of us.” He also said, “The claim by one of Odigie-Oyegun’s foot soldiers, (Mr.) Oji Ngofa, that NWC had taken a decision to hold on with the report of a kangaroo zonal committee that recommended my suspension was a blatant lie. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/attempts-to-force-me-out-will-break-apc.html?m=0

Nairaland / General / Man Punches Baby In The Face After ‘mistaking’ Her For A Doll by Jahelastic(m): 5:36pm On Nov 24, 2016 |
A man who punched a newborn baby in the face has been ordered to pay £100 compensation to the girl’s family after being found guilty. David Hardy, 64, approached five-day-old Elsie Temple in the biscuit aisle where he thumped her while she lay in her car seat. Her sister, Libby, seven, was so distressed by what she saw that she asked her mother ‘is she going to die?’ However he has been found guilty of common assault. He will also have to pay £1,400 in costs and fines. District Judge Sam Goozee said: ‘I’m satisfied you struck out with the intention and knowing Elsie was a baby, not a doll.’ Elise’s mother, Amy Duckers, broke down as she spoke about what happened. ‘He’s rushed over punched her in the face, in the head,’ she told the court. ‘He’s rushed over. He didn’t even look at my pram. He’s kind of lashed out. She described Hardy as having a clenched fist. She said that he didn’t say anything but Elsie started crying immediately. She described her older daughter, who had been hanging onto the rear of the trolley, as ‘hysterical’. ‘I have just gone in complete shock and Julie has looked at me and was like “has this just happened? Did that actually just happen?” I can’t even tell you how I felt. I just went numb. I didn’t know what had just happened myself. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/man-punches-baby-in-face-after.html?m=0 1 Like 1 Share

Due to the economic downturn, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has slashed price regime of houses under Lagos Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme, Lagos HOMS, to allow residents apply for the scheme specifically when rent-to-own scheme commence December 9. Vanguard gathered that the scheme which commenced under the previous administration was yet to be fully subscribed, even with the introduction of raffle and other strategies earlier. With the reduction, two-bedroom flat, which was N7.2 million has been reduced to N3.5 million, while the one bedroom reduced to N2.3 million. Also, the room and parlour unit has also been reduced to N1.5 million. Ambode, who announced the review in prices while inspecting Sir Micheal Otedeola Housing Estate in Odoragunshin, Epe and other ongoing construction within the axis on Monday, added that over 1, 000 additional housing units have been injected into the pool of housing units earlier provided by the state government. He explained that due to economic recession, his administration felt the need to review the housing policies, saying it was the reason for the new policies which we aimed to ensure that housing is affordable to Lagosians. Commissioner for Housing, Gbolahan Lawal, stated that the social welfare policy of the present administration in the face of the current economic downturn necessitated the need for the rent-to-own policy. Meantime, Governor Ambode yesterday said the much awaited Health Insurance Scheme of the State would commence in early 2017, expressing readiness to partner with key players in the sector to use insurance to grow the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Lagos. Speaking at the commissioning of the new WAPIC Insurance Corporate Head Office, located on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, he said there was no question about the strategic importance of insurance to any economy, noting that his government was open to policies and initiatives that would make the sector to thrive in the state. Earlier in his welcome speech, Chairman of WAPIC Insurance, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede said from his trips across Africa, there has never been any public functionary like Governor Ambode who understands the importance of the insurance sector, saying that the knowledge came out of the deep understanding of economics and the fact that insurance is the most important economic sector of the world according to modern day reality. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/recession-ambode-slashes-prices-of.html?m=0

Former Vfl Wolfsburg striker and ex Nigeria International, Jonathan Akpoborie has defended the invitation of the Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Zambia and Algeria, stating there are no players around, with similar qualities to fill in the Midfielder’s boots. The 29-year-old star has yet to feature for his EPL club, Chelsea FC, this season but Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr deems it necessary to include the player in his plans. Akpoborie said that Mikel’s importance to the Eagles was evident in the team’s victories against Zambia and Algeria, in the World Cup qualifying matches. According to Akpoborie, though his game play may slow his mates down, Mikel plays his role well. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/no-player-with-mikels-qualities-in.html?m=0

Education / ASUU Strike: Students Beg FG For Quick Resolution by Jahelastic(m): 3:36pm On Nov 22, 2016 |
Some students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka have appealed to the Federal Government to urgently look into grievances of striking lecturers to forestall incessant strikes in universities. The students made the appeal in Nsukka on Tuesday while reacting to the ongoing warning strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The President of the Students Union Government in the university, Mr. Emmanuel Chukwu, pleaded with President Muhammad Buhari to urgently resolve the crisis between the Federal Government and ASUU. Chukwu said that this had become necessary in order to prevent disruption in the academic calendar of universities in the country. Miss Amarachi Okafor of the Department of Psychology urged the Federal Government to dialogue with ASUU not to allow the strike snowballed into an indefinite one. Okafor also pleaded with ASUU to consider the plight of students who would be spending extra years in the university, especially in this period of recession. She said, “The longer the strike lingers, the more the rate of crimes will increase and parents will be paying more for extra years spent in school.” Another student, Mr Emmanuel Ochi of Mass Communication Department pleaded with ASUU to consider the interest of students in order not to constitute a setback to their academics. She said, “I want the Federal Government and ASUU to resolve their misunderstanding amicably in the interest of students and tertiary education in this country. “Students have suffered enough over incessant strikes and we do not want a repeat of what happened in the last administration by ASUU.” Academic activities have continued to be paralysed at the UNN over the warning strike by ASUU. The chairman of UNN-ASUU chapter, Dr. Ifeanyi Abada, said that academic activities were grounded in the university in compliance with the directive by the National Executive Committee of ASUU. He said, “NEC made efforts to resolve this issue with government but it remained unyielding because of its insensitivity to issues concerning education. “Since government failed to do the needful, ASUU is left with no option than to proceed on a one week warning strike and failure to meet with our demands we will go on an indefinite strike.” Abada said that ASUU was not taking it lightly with government on issues raised, especially the demand that universities be exempted from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy. He said, “The strike compliance in UNN is total, no lectures, no examinations no departmental and faculty meetings as members will not participate. “UNN chapter will not renege on the directive of the national body till government addresses all the issues raised. “Our monitoring team is moving round and any lecturer found teaching will be sanctioned accordingly.” NAN https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/ASUU-strike-students-beg-fg-for-quick.html?m=0

Nairaland / General / Prostitute Stabs Man Who Offered To Pay For Sex With Boiled Egg by Jahelastic(m): 7:36pm On Nov 21, 2016 |
A prostitute in Zimbabwe beat a punter around the head with a beer bottle after he offered to pay for sex with a boiled egg, the DailyMail UK has reported. Moses Mushonga, 28, walked up to the young lady of the night in the town of Mvurwi in Mashonaland province. Firstly he manhandled her, leaning into her bra and touching her breast. This did not endear him to the 23-year-old, called Chipo, but to add insult to injury he then tried to haggle with his only asset. Mushonga told her he had just spent his last bit of money on buying two boiled eggs, which cost 0.25 Zimbabwe dollars, the equivalent of less than a penny or a cent. Sadly he had already eaten one too. Insulted by his attitude, Chipo flew into a rage, hiting hit him with the beer bottle, and then punched him in the face, before knocking him out. When he came round Mushonga was bleeding heavily from his head. He told local media: ‘She could have just said no.’ Chipo, who was not charged by police, said she simply felt he needed to be taught a lesson about respect. Earlier this year the Weekend Post newspaper in the capital, Harare, reported that the economy was so bad that sex workers had reduced their prices to 0.8 Zimbabwe dollars – equivalent to half a loaf of bread. But they clearly draw the line at a boiled egg. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/prostitute-stabs-man-who-offered-to-pay.html?m=0

Politics / Senate Uncovers Govs, Minister’s Imported Luxury Cars In Lagos by Jahelastic(m): 1:07pm On Nov 20, 2016 |
There are strong indications that influential Nigerians, including a serving governor and a minister, are among owners of about 1,500 exotic vehicles parked in the Volkswagen Yard, on the Mile 2-Badagry Expressway in Lagos since 2015. Another governor from the South-East (name withheld) has also been identified as the owner of 15 Sports Utility Vehicles intercepted and impounded by officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and parked in the agency’s office in Ikeja. The Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff, led by its Chairman, Hope Uzodinma, had visited the VON premises last week on oversight assignment when it discovered that the place looked deserted with disused equipment in its assembly plant. The officials of the company, who had earlier declined to open the store to the lawmakers for inspection, were forced to grant the visitors access into the warehouse when the lawmakers threatened to force the door open. The senators, who were there in company with security operatives and officials of the NCS, saw no fewer than 1,500 pieces of various models of Volkswagen products and other brands of vehicles in the warehouse. SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that the senators were curious when they found out that there were port tags on the vehicles, indicating that they were imported. One of the lawmakers told one of our correspondents that his colleagues were not convinced by the explanation offered by officials of the company that the firm did not abuse the auto policy introduced by the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration with its action. The senator added that the team discovered that about 15 Sports Utility Vehicles, on the premises of the NCS office in Ikeja, Lagos, which were impounded by the service when the dealer attempted to evade payment of duty, belonged to a serving governor in the South-East. He said the vehicles carried Federal Government’s official number plates in an attempt to deceive officers of the customs service. Uzodinma had alleged in an interview with journalists in Abuja that there were indications that the company was not assembling vehicles in Nigeria as it claimed. He stated that his committee discovered different vehicle brands in the company’s warehouses which were already assembled before they were shipped to Nigeria. The Managing Director of VON Automobiles, Mr. Tokunbo Aromolaran, however, refuted the Senate claim that the company was sabotaging the country’s economy. Aromolaran said, “The Chairman of the Senate Committee, in company with about 30 people, comprising senators, officers of Nigeria Customs Service, journalists and police officers, descended on the VON premises on October 28, 2016, without prior notification. “They were given free access to our plants and warehouses, and found nothing other than what you would expect to see in an auto assembly plant – an inventory of vehicles assembled, awaiting delivery. “We also confirmed that applicable duties were paid at the ports when the components were imported into the country. He said, “All applicable duties and levies on Volkswagen vehicles stored at VON have been paid to the NCS (SKD vehicle kits and fully built units). This can be verified by the service. Uzodinma, however, told one of our correspondents on Saturday that the committee was convinced that VON was sabotaging the nation’s economy, adding that a public hearing would be organised soon to unravel the alleged sharp practices. The Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, said the affected vehicles had remained under NCS custody because duty was not paid on them. Adeniyi stated, “There are no separate laws for top government officials or highly-placed Nigerians. The laws are the same for everybody and the laws specify that all imported vehicles attract duty. If duty was not paid, the vehicles cannot be released.” He, however, added that if the owners paid the required duty, the SUVs would be released. On the 1,500 vehicles found in the premises of Volkswagen, Adeniyi said, “I do not have details of that development.” https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/senate-uncovers-govs-ministers-imported.html?m=0

Nairaland / General / Mmm-nigeria Donates N5m Relief Materials To Idps by Jahelastic(m): 8:30pm On Nov 19, 2016 |
‘MMM-Nigeria’, a community of mutual financial aid and donations, on Saturday donated relief materials worth N5 million to two Internally Displaced Persons camps in the Federal Capital Territory. The gesture was part of the community’s humanitarian week tagged ‘MMM cares’ to mark its first anniversary. The Gwoza and Bama IDP Camps located in Durumi area and the New Kuchingoro IDP camp were the two beneficiaries of the relief materials. The group also donated clothing, drugs, and educational materials to the pupils among them. A Guilder in the ‘MMM Community’, Mr. Seyi Bello, said the donation was motivated by the desire of the group to affect the society positively, especially the less-privileged. He said, “We are marking our first year anniversary and we have decided to come and celebrate it with our brothers, mothers and children in the camp. “As a community, we do not only provide help to our members, we also extend that to the larger society as part of our social responsibility. “In these times of economic challenges, the IDPs are the ones that need help and support more than any other person; that is why we visited them today,” he said. Bello explained that besides providing help and donations to its members, humanitarian service was a flagship programme of the group. He said that the relief items were bought from free-will donations of members in their quest to touch lives positively. He said, “The N5 million was raised from voluntary donations my members in the FCT. “That is what defines us as a community of people providing financial help to each other on the principle of reciprocity and benevolence. “In MMM there are no lenders and no debtors. One participant asks for help, another one helps.’’ Bello appealed to individuals, groups and corporate bodies to always remember the IDPs across Nigeria, since government alone would not be able to provide for them adequately. He said, “They are our brothers and sisters who have left the comfort of their homes and are now struggling for survival here. “No matter how little, let us always extend a hand of help to them to complement what government and other donors are doing.” The General Secretary of the IDP camp at New Kuchingoro, Mr. Enoch Yohanna, who received the items, expressed gratitude for the gesture which he described as `timely.’ He said, “The Christmas season is very close; we thank MMM-Nigeria for bringing these items to us. “We hope to share them satisfactorily among us for everybody to be happy and have a happy Christmas celebration.” The visit to the IDPs camps was preceded by a two-hour environmental sanitation by members of the group on Nyanya/Mararaba route, a suburb of the FCT. Members of the group came out in their numbers to clear garbage from drainage and streets in the area. (NAN) https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/mmm-nigeria-donates-n5m-relief.html?m=0

Education / Malpractice: WAEC Bans Imo Schools, Derecognises 28 Others by Jahelastic(m): 9:40am On Nov 18, 2016 |
The West African Examinations Council has barred two secondary schools in Imo State from registering as an examination centre or presenting their pupils as candidates in any of its examinations for a period of five years. This is just as 28 other schools across the country have been derecognised for two years for engaging in examination malpractices. The Head, Public Affairs of the council, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, said this on Thursday in a telephone interview with our correspondent. Ojijeogu, who declined to name the affected schools, added that a supervisor was assaulted in one of the Imo schools, noting that WAEC officials were “locked out for more than 30 minutes in the second school obviously to perpetrate examination malpractice.’’ Explaining the difference between derecognising a school and withdrawing the recognition given to a school, Ojijeogu said the one which had been derecognised by the council could still be used as an examination centre but without the participation of its teachers as invigilators, while a school whose recognition had been withdrawn could no longer be used as a centre nor have its teachers participate as invigilators for a period of five years. He said, “We don’t usually name the schools because we refer to them by their centre numbers. For the derecognised schools, examination can still hold in the school but we will not use their teachers as invigilator. There are 28 of those schools across the country and they can still reapply after two years, telling us what they have put in place to prevent a recurrence of examination malpractice.” https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/malpractice-waec-bans-imo-schools.html?m=0

Nairaland / General / Why We Bought N3.6bn Exotic Cars During Recession – Reps by Jahelastic(m): 8:47am On Nov 18, 2016 |
The House of Representatives on Thursday defended its decision to buy exotic cars for its 360 members at a period the country’s economy is in recession. It said lawmakers must have a means of mobility while carrying out oversight duties over Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government. The House will spend at least N3.6bn across 24 months to complete payment for the luxury vehicles supplied by the Kaduna-based Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited. The PUNCH had reported exclusively on Monday that the firm had already delivered 28 units of Peugeot 508 series to members in the first batch of 50 cars. A total of 360 units of the exotic automobile would have been delivered by January 2017. The Deputy Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Jonathan Gaza, while defending the procurement of the cars on Thursday, said that recession would not stop lawmakers from performing their legislative duties. He argued that in a recession, both the executive and legislative arms of government were expected to work even harder to find urgent solutions to challenges facing the country. Gaza noted that while working during recession, members were not expected to trek to the premises of the MDAs for oversight duties. He added, “In a recession, we will all put on our thinking caps. We are working; these are committees’ cars and they are not the personal property of members. “When you came here today, how did you come? Did you walk down to this place (National Assembly) from your house? “If a member is going to visit an agency, will he trek there? “We need materials, computers, stationery, cars; these are all for work.” Asked to comment on whether the National Assembly would approve Buhari’s bid to take a loan of $29.96bn, Gaza replied that discussions were ongoing between the two sides. The lawmaker said no conclusions had been reached. He also declined to speak categorically on whether the government had begun making releases for the constituency projects of lawmakers. The constituency projects of senators and members are worth N100bn in the 2016 budget of N6.06tn. The refusal of the government to fund the projects is reported to be one of the sore points in the relationship between Buhari and the National Assembly. But, when asked a direct question on the issue, Gaza parried it. “We don’t release money for constituency projects. Our work is to pass the budget and we passed the 2016 budget. It is the responsibility of the executive to release funds for projects. “Also, the money is not paid into our pockets, we don’t touch it,” he replied. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/why-we-bought-n36bn-exotic-cars-during.html?m=0

Romance / How Toxins Affect Your Sexual Energy by Jahelastic(m): 10:50am On Nov 16, 2016 |
Studies have shown that men who engaged in regular physical activity lowered their risk of experiencing sexual dysfunction. Remember, when using exercise as a drug, it’s important to vary your routine. Also optimising your diet based on your body’s unique nutritional type will help your libido. We each have a unique nutritional type with varying demands for the ratios of macronutrients (fats, proteins and carbohydrates) to function optimally. When you are eating the foods your body was designed to eat, you will notice improvements in every aspect of your health. Some people do better eating mainly proteins, some do better eating mainly carbohydrates and some do better eating a combination of proteins and carbohydrate. You will need to do tests to find out which metabolic type you are. Consider using choline and vitamin B5 supplements. The neurotransmitter that triggers the sexual message, in both men and women, is acetylcholine. With too little ACH, sexual activity goes down. One way to safely and effectively enhance ACH levels in your body is to take choline supplements (1,000-3,000 mg) and vitamin B5 (500-1,500 mg). According to a study on the impact of sex on stress, as measured by blood pressure levels in stressful situations, sexual intercourse may be one of the best ways to calm your nerves. Researchers asked nearly 50 men and women to maintain diaries for two weeks regarding how often they experienced full blown intercourse, masturbation, or sexual activity that excluded intercourse. Afterward, patients were given tests measuring their stress levels involving public speaking and solving math problem aloud. Those who had intercourse enjoyed the most relief, as their blood pressure levels normalised faster than the other groups. And, the beneficial effect lasted for at least a week. People who had abstained from any kind of sex, however, had the highest blood pressure response to stress. It seems clear that healthy sexual relationships can be a powerful way to get rid of the jitters before that big business meeting. One possible reason for the effect could be the “pair bonding” hormone oxytocin. Sexual desires, as well as orgasm, are controlled by various influences on the brain and nervous system. Researchers have revealed many similarities between men and women; contrary to popular belief, for example, visual stimuli spur sexual stirrings in both. Brain imaging studies show that achieving orgasm involves far more than merely heightened arousal. It requires a release of inhibitors, culminating in a shutdown of the brain’s centre of vigilance in both sexes, and a widespread neutral power failure in women. Lose weight Being fat can have a negative effect on your sexual desire and satisfaction. New research shows that if you are fat and can lose about 13 per cent of your body weight over two years you can feel more sexually attractive and have greater sexual desire. So you don’t need drugs to have a better sex life. Losing a bit of weight may just do the trick. To really lose weight, it is helpful to treat exercise like a drug. When trying to lose weight gradually increase the amount you are exercising to 60 to 90 minute a day. Initially, the frequency is daily. This is a treatment dose until you normalise your weight or insulin levels. Once it has normalised, you will only need to exercise three to four times a week and include more anaerobic, speed work and strength training, as these are major keys to staying healthy. You should exercise hard enough so that it is difficult to talk to someone next to you. When you are exercising that hard, your cardiovascular system is under such a significant amount of stress that the mere act of talking, makes you unable to provide your body with enough oxygen. However, if you cannot carry on a conversation at all, then you have gone too far and you need to decrease intensity. And diet is just as important for weight loss. Remember, the foods that may be healthy for you, and vice-versa. Thus, eating according to your specific nutritional type is the proven way to ascertain which foods work best for you. That is some people are healthier eating more protein, some people more healthy eating more carbohydrate and some people need both protein and carbohydrate. If you tend to put on weight easily you are likely a protein type. Also, controlling your insulin levels is important to optimize your health. You see, when you eat grains and sugar your insulin levels increase. When insulin levels increase, you are telling your body to store carbohydrates as fat and not to release any of the stored fat. (This makes it impossible for you to use your own stored body fat for energy.) so the excess carbohydrates in your diet not only make you gain weight, they make sure you keep that weight on. By cutting grains and sugars from your diet, you will not only tame your weight but also fight illnesses. Sex has also been found to boost self-esteem and improve intimacy in your relationship. This is because sex and orgasms result in increased levels of the hormone oxytocin – the “love” hormone – that helps you feel bonded to your partner. As oxytocin increases, so do hormones known as endorphins, which in turn lessens feelings of pain related to everything from headaches and arthritis to symptoms of PMS. It can also help you to get a better night’s sleep. It may sound tongue-in-cheek to recommend more sex as an important health tool, it does appear that is the case. If you are fortunate enough to be in a mutually monogamous relationship, frequent sex is an excellent way to improve your health and even prevent future disease. “Frequent” is all relative, of course, and although the above study counted twice a week as frequent, other studies have found that having sex even once a week can benefit your health in many ways. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/how-toxins-affect-your-sexual-energy.html?m=0

Phones / Five Best Smartphone Camera-focusing Techniques by Jahelastic(m): 12:52pm On Nov 15, 2016 |
Going by the experience of Huawei Nigerian workers using P8 and P9 smartphone brands, one of the first rules of photography is that the subject should be sharp. Excited about how Huawei has changed their world of photography, they say that most modern digital cameras offer a number of ways of achieving sharp photos. Here is a look at how to select the autofocus (AF) point and which focus mode to use. Tip 1: Manual focus Although nearly all modern digital cameras can focus the lens automatically (the Leica M9, Leica M9-P and Leica Monochrom being notable exceptions), they also allow you to focus manually. Manual focus is a particularly good option with macro photography because many cameras struggle to lock onto very close subjects and the lens ends up hunting (moving in and out of focus) every time the shutter release button is depressed. It is far less frustrating to switch the camera (or the lens) to manual focus and do the job yourself. Live View technology makes manual focusing very easy because it is usually possible to enlarge the image on the screen so that you can see the precise spot that you are interested in, and then adjust the focus until it is perfectly sharp. In Nigeria, Huawei has spent about $500, between 2015 and 2016, teaching Nigerian youths how to use smartphone cameras and get a better experience. A Nigerian professional photographer, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, says, “Through the Huawei project, especially on Huawei P8 smartphones, the company has taught its Nigerian workers and other Nigerians how to be economically empowered through photography.” Tip 2: Single shot autofocus Often abbreviated to single autofocus or single AF, this camera focus option sets your camera to focus when the shutter release is depressed halfway and to keep the lens focused on the selected subject until the shot is taken and the button is released. If you need to refocus, you have to lift your finger off the shutter button and then depress it a second time. “Single focus mode is useful for static subjects such as still life and landscapes,” Amadi-Obi said. Tip 3: Continuous autofocus Huawei says that when this camera focus option is selected, it will continue to focus the lens as long as the shutter release button is half-pressed, or the AF button is pressed. “This makes it a very good option when photographing moving subjects because the camera will adjust the focus distance as the subject moves,” it says in a statement. However, advanced cameras such as the Canon EOS 7D and Nikon D7000 have options that enable you to specify which AF points the camera will use to track the subject as it moves about in the frame. Some even allow you to specify how quickly the camera should respond to changes in subject distance to avoid the subject going out of focus when a stadium pillar, for example, momentarily blocks the view. When using continuous AF, it is usually brilliant to set the starting AF point manually so the camera knows what the target is before it starts to track it. If you like shooting sport or fast action, then make sure you check out your camera’s continuous AF options. Tip 4: Automatic focus point selection When you are focusing automatically, you need to have the active AF point over the subject in the viewfinder to get it sharp. Broadly speaking, there are two ways of selecting the AF point using this camera focus technique. The easiest is to let your camera decide for you and use the automatic AF selection point option. In many situations, the camera will do a decent job and this is a useful option when you don’t have much time to get the shot. However, your camera will usually try to focus on the closest object near the centre of the frame and it’s not usually very good at pin-pointing smaller subjects or fine details. For this reason it’s often better to set the AF point yourself. Tip 5: Manual AF point selection Setting the AF point yourself gives you the maximum level of control over where your camera focuses, and it is a good option for landscape, still life and portrait photography when you have time to operate the necessary camera controls. Setting this camera focus option is usually done by pressing the AF point selection button and then using the navigation controls to select the AF point you want while you look through the viewfinder. Once you reach the AF point that is over your subject, you’re ready to focus and take the picture. In some cases, you may be able to set the navigation controls to select the AF point directly without the need to press a button beforehand, but this can be at the expense of their usual shortcut functions. Nairaland / General / To Fg And House Of Rep. On Mmm Nigeria by Jahelastic(m): 8:31am On Nov 12, 2016 |
The news about MMM have been on rampage, flying up and down and published by Nigerian news papers on the 9th of November, 2016 that House of Representative met and their agenda was how security agencies (EFCC) will arrest "Movrodi Mondail Moneybox" popularly known as MMM promoters. House of Rep described the scheme as a "scam" and warned Nigerians not to be carried away by the "mouth-watering" returns on investments. The house directed EFCC, other security agencies and CBN to take urgent steps to halt the scheme before many Nigerians would become victims of the scam. Dear House of Rep., with due respect sir / ma, this program (scheme) called MMM is not an investment company as you people have called it. This is a community or ordinary people, selflessly helping each other. The goal of the platform is not the money. The goal is to destroy the world's unjust financial system and hardship you Government are making us pass through. You people at the top and in power calling your self our leaders because we Nigerians know we have no leaders, have really failed us and you keep failing us every day. This is a community platform that have been designed for we masses to help each other, not to do business and we are really relief of poverty with the 30% we collect on our spared money at the end of 30days. Yes we may not be bellyful but at list we are not hungry again the way you people have been making us hungry. Why are you having meeting against masses happiness after-all you people are enjoying and training your family with our money and we can fight for ourselves but remember, there is God oh! How is MMM affecting you at the top? Or is it because you people are unable to collect Tax and VAT from them that's why you're beefing them and we that are doing it? So you people have seen that Nigerians that are coming to you for help and assistant, money, food, shelter and jobs have reduced that's why you're not happy again. Be inform that Nigerians are getting wise every day and God is guiding and protecting us. You gather together t do meeting about MMM and you'll still collect allowance for seating when so many issues are there for you to help us look into and ways out of it. Issues like; - Education - Economy - Roads - Shelter for masses - Electricity - Job for for the youths ( Leaders of tomorrow ) and so on but no, you are not doing that. If the country economy is good, who will be looking for short cut to make money or to be happy? Different types of lottery are in the country collecting people's money any how, notting have been done about it just because you looked at it that people are playing it at their own risk. Please, same thing applies to MMM, people are putting their money there to help others since we have no one to help us. Electricity will give me light for just 15 minute to 30 minute in a day and at the end of the month they will bring bill of N10,000 up ward, what have government done about it please? Notting can be done about it because it's their own. About our network operators, one will load Some amount of credit on the phone and the credit will just be disappearing without using it for any thing or in a case where by you send messages to to people, the messages will not be delivered and still you will be charged or a case whereby they just activate you for what you didn't request for it and they do remove your credit. Please what have government done about it? What have been done about banks that you will take your own money there to save and they will still charge you for some amount of money which they call "stamp duty" and at the end of the day they will still use our money for business and make profits from our money but give us kobo as interest at the end of the month, what have government done? In Nigeria, we are very wise now and use our own money the way we want it not your own money. Even our own money in government purse is been called national cake and can be eaten by them at any time without even accounting for it. So many billions of naira have been recovered from looters but wasn't used to reform the nation's economy. Only late Abacha's loot can do a lot and go a long way by using it to reform and restructure our country. Landlords and landladies are there making life miserable for the tenant, saying after all it's their own money they use in building their house but still government is not helping the masse at all. A very big thank you to the formal Head of State then, the person of "Mr Jakande" who helped masses then with the estate he built. Am so happy that my parent benefited from it and many people at a very low and cheap amount of money. He even helped his staffs then by borrowing them some amount of money to be able to secure a flat then. God will continue to bless you and you family. So many graduates out there seeking for jobs but no way out, politicians keep putting their family and their love one there, how do you want the graduates to survive? Pls leave us with our MMM as they make us smile and happy always and you people should just continue spending the nation's money any how. The Holy Bible says "Behold, I come quickly and my rewards are with me to pay everyone as they have worked" says the Lord God! Mavrodians, with MMM, we'll change the world. https://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/to-fg-and-house-of-rep-on-mmm-nigeria.html?m=0

Nairaland / General / Re: MMM To Be Shut Down By The Federal Government by Jahelastic(m): 7:12pm On Nov 09, 2016 |
At times I laugh when people say FG will shut down MMM as if mmm is one shop at ebutte-meta, oyingbo or Alaba market, as if MMM is one company at Agbara industrial estate. My take, if FG can not stop u from browsing the internet, they can't stop u from access and runing ur mmm account. Let me shock u. MMM program is not a program that started yesterday. it has survive tougher periods than this. It passed through fierce fire, yet it came out refined, crystal sparkling and purer than GOLD. your own MMM can only stop when you as a participant stop to participate. Clever sergey mavrodi saw the feature and designed MMM not to depend on anybody to survive. So, with this Strength of MMM, it is possible for MMM to stop existing in a country but mmm can never stop being in existence. Remember there are over 7billion people all over the world. Your country is just a fraction. In short who u be? Also it is possible for only you in ur country to be the only one doing mmm. That is why we have the Bitcoin which connect u to global bank and every other people in other part of the world doing mmm. If u think u don't want to continue with mmm because of what u heard, I beg park well, and let people that dare big things take the center stage of the new financial revolution that bridge the cap between the rich and the poor. The battle of life maybe for everyone, but those that conquer their fears and dare big things are called achievers. In conclusion, always remember this, with or without you mmm will achieve it's goal which is to raise multi-millionaires, why don't u face your fears today, join us in the battle for financial freedom and be counted among the self-made millionaire courtesy of MMM. Nobody can stop u from achieving what u desire except you stop urself. Together we can do alot. |
Politics / BREAKING: Trump Elected US President by Jahelastic(m): 9:24am On Nov 09, 2016 |
Donald Trump stunned America and the world Wednesday, riding a wave of populist resentment to defeat Hillary Clinton in the race to become the 45th president of the United States. The Republican mogul defeated his Democratic rival, plunging global markets into turmoil and casting the long-standing global political order, which hinges on Washington’s leadership, into doubt. Hillary Clinton has conceded the hard-fought presidential contest to Trump when she called the 70-year-old maverick Republican tycoon to congratulate him. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/breaking-trump-elected-us-president.html?m=0

Foreign Affairs / US Election: Trump Poised For Shock White House Win by Jahelastic(m): 9:07am On Nov 09, 2016 |
Billionaire populist Donald Trump, tapping into an electorate fed up with Washington insiders, was on the verge of a shock victory Wednesday over Hillary Clinton in a historic US presidential election that sent world markets into meltdown. State-by-state, one-by-one, the 70-year-old maverick Republican tycoon racked up victories in defiance of the forecasts of pundits and pollsters, before arriving within striking distance of the White House. Key races in Michigan and Pennsylvania remained to be called at 0630 GMT, but the 69-year-old Democrat’s supporters were in a state of shock and the markets did not wait for a concession speech to react. US futures markets fell five percent in after-hours trading, mirrored by falls in London and Tokyo as the news broke that the world’s greatest economy could soon be in the hands of an untested protectionist. The dollar tumbled against the yen and the Mexican peso slumped to a historic low against even the weaker greenback, on concerns that Trump might make good on his vow to build a wall on the US border. In New York, it was a tale of two poll-watching parties — as Trump’s supporters whooped it up in anticipation of a victory for his populist campaign, Clinton’s camp succumbed to silent, stunned grief. “It’s unbelievable. I didn’t know Trump was really going to pull it off,” said Glenn Ruti, a New Yorker who works in telecommunications. “I think he’s going to go all the way. The country wants change.” Attendees at Trump’s victory party at a Midtown hotel began chanting “Call it, call it!” In America as a whole, it was a tale of two countries — as Trump’s largely-white fan base celebrated a repudiation of free trade, open borders and diverse communities, liberals and minorities cringed. “It’s just unbelievable,” said 51-year-old Anabel Evora, who works for a non-profit and flew into New York as a supporter of Clinton’s historic bid to be America’s first woman president. “I am praying, and I am not religious,” she told AFP. “I am sad. I’m about to cry.” At the Mexican-American bar Campeon in Manhattan’s Union Square, the mood was one of disgust and apprehension. “If Trump wins, I am going to throw up,” said 27-year-old Amy Goldstein. Trump’s win, if confirmed, would halt Clinton’s quest to reach the White House for at least another four years — and instead confer the title of president on a man who has been accused by a dozen women of sexual assault and misconduct. “He’s so un-American. We’re outraged. It’s shocking. Racism, stereotyping by religion and sex,” said Kate Kalmyka, a 36-year-old lawyer. – ‘Drain the swamp’ – At the bar in the soaring Trump Tower, the Republican’s home base and headquarters, a well-heeled crowd cheered and chanted “Drain the swamp” — Trump’s anti-corruption slogan. “Without a strong United States of America, the rest of the world is in trouble,” declared Rina Corey. “We were saved once by Ronald Reagan and I think Donald Trump is in the same path. He’s a citizen and not a politician. We need him desperately.” In the Florida city of Miami, Cuban Americans — traditionally strongly pro-Republican — honked their horns and cheered as they gathered at the iconic Cafe Versailles in Little Havana. “We didn’t like the fact that the country was leaning socialist, we lost many jobs,” said 45-year-old Miguel Alejandro. “This isn’t the country I found in 1993 when I arrived by raft, when they received us with great excitement.” As of 0630 GMT Wednesday, Trump had won at least 25 states and 245 electoral college votes, just short of the 270 he needed, and had narrow leads in partial counts in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Both these states were won by incumbent president Barack Obama when he was elected in 2008 and re-elected 2012 as America’s first black president, and pollsters had expected Clinton to keep them. But an apparent collapse in Democratic support among white voters — not fully compensated for by increased Latino turnout — appeared to have doomed Clinton in blue-collar areas of America’s Rust Belt. – ‘Whatever happens, thank you’ – On the legislative side, the Republicans were on course to retain their majority in the US House of Representatives, according to network projections. Clinton and her husband former president Bill Clinton were holed up in their hotel, but she tweeted: “This team has so much to be proud of. Whatever happens tonight, thank you for everything.” Trump cast his ballot alongside his wife Melania in a Manhattan school gymnasium. “Right now it’s looking very good,” he told reporters — paying no heed to protesters who welcomed him with chants of “New York hates you!” The 2016 race was the most bruising in modern memory. Obama’s election in 2008 had raised hopes of uniting Americans. But the current contest has only highlighted the country’s divisions — and the fact that voters are not necessarily happy with their options. Exit polls by ABC News and NBC News found that both Clinton and Trump are seen as untrustworthy by majorities of voters, while most find Trump’s temperament unpresidential. Nairaland / General / I Hate When Women Reject Me"- Kenyan Man Who Was Caught Raping Neighbour's Goat by Jahelastic(m): 10:49pm On Nov 07, 2016 |
A man who was nearly killed by an angry mob after he raped a goat says he had sex with the animal because he was rejected by women. Gabrielle Simiyu was caught in the act by his neighbour late at night and almost lynched by villagers before police officers intervened and saved him. Outraged residents claimed it wasn't the first time the motorcycle taxi operator had violated farm animals in their village. They claimed the 26-year-old had previously engaged in sex acts with a cow and chicken. Simiyu was arrested after the female goat's owner, Richard Wanyonyi, heard bleating and checked his shed in the village of Nangwe, Kenya, on Friday night. He told KU TV : "I thought my animals were strangling each other so I tiptoed to the cow shed and flashed my torch. "I was shocked when I found the man but he ran away very fast. "Since it was at night I did not see him very well so I took the shoes he left behind and began a search in the morning." Mr Wanyonyi showed the shoes to other motorcycle taxi operators and they told him they belonged to Simiyu. Police saved him from being lynched by an angry mob. Kenyan media said Simiyu admitted having sex with the animal and pleaded for forgiveness. He said: "I have a serious problem and need help. Every time I approach a girl she refuses and it really pains me. "I am appealing to well-wishers to take me to a doctor or a specialist so the problem I have can be identified." http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/11/i-hate-when-women-reject-me-kenyan-man.html?m=0

Foreign Affairs / Reject Mean-spirited Trump, Obama Begs US Voters by Jahelastic(m): 10:22pm On Nov 07, 2016 |
President Barack Obama on Monday urged Americans to make history by electing Democrat Hillary Clinton to succeed him in the White House, and reject the “mean-spirited” politics of Donald Trump. “I ask you to do for Hillary what you did for me,” Obama told a rally in Ann Arbor, Michigan — the first of three he is holding for Clinton on the eve of the vote. “You have the chance to reject a coarse, divisive, mean-spirited politics that would take us backwards,” he said. “The chance to elect our first female president.” Michigan, normally a Democratic stronghold, has emerged as a crucial battleground this year, one that Trump, the Republican nominee, hopes will give him a path to victory. Obama reminded voters that his administration rescued the state’s dominant auto industry from the brink of collapse in 2008. “All that progress goes down the drain if we don’t win tomorrow,” he said, adding, “This race will be close here in Michigan, just like it will be in a lot of parts of the country.” “I want you just to focus, because the choice you face when you step into the voting booth, it really cannot be clearer. Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit to be commander in chief,” he said. “The good news is, you don’t just have to vote against something. You actually have a candidate who’s worthy of your vote. A candidate who is smart. A candidate who is steady. A candidate who’s tested. Probably the most qualified person ever to run for this office. The next president of the United States — Hillary Clinton!” Obama was to rally voters in Durham, New Hampshire later in the day before joining up with Clinton for a big, star-studded campaign event in Philadelphia. He admitted to experiencing some nostalgia campaigning for what he said was likely to be the last time in a while. “It’s not that often you’ve got a chance to move history in a better direction.
