Crime / I Was Drunk When I Raped My Daughter – Father by Jahelastic(m): 7:23am On Sep 30, 2016
A trader, Uchena Elumadu, 49, who allegedly raped his daughter in the Agege area of Lagos State, has said he was drunk the first time he raped her.

Elumadu said his friends made him drunk that night.

Our correspondent had reported that the Imo State indigene raped his first child at their home on Martins Street, new Oko Oba, Agege, each time his wife was not around.

He was said to have administered drug on her each time he slept with her  to prevent pregnancy.

Elumadu, who was paraded before pressmen on Thursday after he was arrested, said he had only raped his daughter twice.

He said, “I don’t know what came over me. I have only raped her twice. My wife doesn’t know I have been doing this. I first slept with her sometime last year.

“That day, I had gone for a naming ceremony and I was drunk. My friend had abused me that I always took non-alcoholic drinks and I should try a little alcohol. It was the little I took that made me misbehave.  The second time, I was in the house with my wife when I sneaked into the room and raped her.

“I was not the one that deflowered her. When I slept with her the first time and I asked why she was not a virgin, she could not answer me. I have committed a great sin and I have asked God to forgive my wrong.”

The state Commissioner of Police,  Fatai Owoseni, said the suspect would be charged to court.

Nairaland / General / Bullet Train With Snake On Board Makes Emergency Stop by Jahelastic(m): 12:17pm On Sep 27, 2016
An unlikely stowaway on a Japanese bullet train (shinkansen) forced the country's usually uber-punctual rail service to make an emergency stop Monday.

A female passenger glimpsed a brown snake wrapped around an armrest through the gap in the seats in front of her.

"We don't know how the snake got on the train, or if it was a wild or a pet snake," Haruhiko Tomikubo, a spokesperson for Japan Rail Central, told CNN.

"This isn't a normal occurrence either as you can't have pet snakes on trains."

The bullet train had left Tokyo for Hiroshima when the female passenger saw the snake. She immediately alerted the bullet train's conductor, who made an emergency stop at Hamamatsu city.

'Caught within a minute'

The police were on hand to capture the snake, which was around 1 foot (30 centimeters) long and believed to be non poisonous.

"We think that the operation went smoothly," Tomikubo, told CNN. "The snake was caught within a minute, and the bullet train arrived [in Hiroshima] without any delays."

While pet snakes are not allowed on board Japanese bullet trains, cats and dogs are. Owners must pay an extra charge and make sure they are kept in special pet boxes or cages so they don't disturb other travelers.

This isn't the first time that a snake has been found on bullet train, with a 3-foot-long (1 meter) Honduran milk snake discovered in 2011.

"Five years ago, a snake was found on a seat, but it was caught back then too," said Tomikubo.

"That time it was a pet."

Foreign Affairs / Saudi Cuts Ministers’ Salaries By 20 Per Cent by Jahelastic(m): 9:32pm On Sep 26, 2016
Saudi Arabia’s King Salman on Monday cut cabinet ministers’ salaries by 20 percent and reduced other state officials’ benefits in a continuing austerity drive to cope with lower oil revenues.

The 160 members of the Shura Council, who include 30 women, will see a 15 percent drop in their annual allowances for housing, furniture and cars, a royal decree said.

Council members are appointed by the king to advise cabinet.

The decrees which announced the measures did not say how much money would be saved.

Since 2014 global oil prices have collapsed by more than half, leaving Saudi Arabia with a record deficit last year.

The fall in the kingdom’s main revenue source led to unprecedented subsidy cuts and curbs on government spending.

In April this year the king’s son, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, announced the wide-ranging Vision 2030 plan to diversify the economy.

The effort also seeks a streamlined, more accountable administration.

Monday’s decrees ordered the government to “stop providing cars for senior state officials”. Telephone expenditure will also be curbed.

But front-line soldiers on the southern border with Yemen will be exempt from a ruling not to grant the military an annual bonus.

Sports / Tottenham Look For First Champions League Win In Moscow by Jahelastic(m): 8:39pm On Sep 26, 2016
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino said he hoped his side could overcome an avalanche of injuries to claim a first Champions League win this season against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

The Argentinian coach is already without England striker Harry Kane and will now also see Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Moussa Sissoko sit out the clash in Russia.

“The Champions league is a new competition for us and it’s important to have a strong squad for it,” Pochettino told a press conference Monday.

“We’ve signed several strong players to increase the competition in the team and now despite the injuries we’re still a competitive side.”

A win in Moscow is vital for Tottenham — currently second in the English Premier League — after their defeat by Monaco in the opening Champions League fixture.

“Now we need to improve our performance, we need to win tomorrow. It’s very important to get all three points. We know it will be a very tough game but in our minds we want to get three points.”

– Crowd fears played down –

CSKA coach Leonid Slutsky meanwhile insisted there would be no repeat of the Euro 2016 fan violence.

The Russian champions take on the Londoners in the first visit by an English side to the country since their respective fans clashed at the summer tournament in France.

“I believe that those English fans who come to Moscow to support their favourites will enjoy a high level of hospitality, not only at the stadium but everywhere,” Slutsky, who managed Russia at Euro 2016, said at a press conference.

“I’m confident that they’re in no danger. They have no reasons for fears.”

But Slutsky hopes his players won’t be quite so hospitable as they look to heap more misery on Tottenham.

“Of course we should be very careful in dead ball situations,” Slutsky said.

“The appearance of (Toby) Alderweireld, (Jan) Vertongen or (Vincent) Janssen in our penalty box will definitely be dangerous.

“But I don’t think that the dead ball situations will be the only or main threat in tomorrow’s match as Tottenham have a big group of skilled players in their attack and we need to shut them down.”

Last week, CSKA crashed out of the Russian Cup 2-1 away to Yenisei Krasnoyarsk, which put an end to their eight-match unbeaten run in all tournaments.

The Russian champions also dropped points at the weekend after being held 1-1 by Krasnodar.

Slutsky said playmaker Alan Dzagoev, who missed Saturday’s match with a persistent muscle problem, remains uncertain for the clash with Tottenham.

“We will finalise the decision on him in the morning (Tuesday),” Slutsky added.

Sports / Leicester Face Champions League Home Bow by Jahelastic(m): 8:22pm On Sep 26, 2016
Four months on from their astonishing 5,000-1 Premier League triumph, the stardust returns to Leicester City’s King Power Stadium in Tuesday’s first ever Champions League home game against Porto.

Leicester have made a faltering start to their title defence and after Saturday’s 4-1 loss at Manchester United, they have now lost as many league games — three — as in the entirety of last season.

But Claudio Ranieri’s men made a fine start to their maiden Champions League campaign, winning 3-0 at Club Brugge, and Tuesday’s game represents another new chapter in the club’s 132-year history.

“In Bruges it was a surreal feeling –- you walk out on a Champions League carpet, through a Champions League arch,” said winger Marc Albrighton, who scored Leicester’s opener in Belgium.

“It is something we are usually watching on TV and we are stood there all of a sudden and listening to that tune and going out to play in a Champions League game.

“It is surreal, but it makes you want more. It gives you that taste of it.

“We know it will be a fantastic occasion and if we can get off to a good start here at this stadium and build on that, we will put ourselves in a great position to go further in this competition.”

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel sat out Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford with a groin injury, but he is expected to play against Porto after training with the rest of the squad on Monday.

French midfielder Nampalys Mendy, however, remains sidelined with an ankle problem.

Ranieri will draw confidence from the presence in his starting XI of 28 million pounds ($36.3 million, 32.3 million euros) record signing Islam Slimani.

The Algeria striker scored six goals against Porto in six appearances for his former club Sporting Lisbon — including five this year — and was dubbed ‘The Dragon Slayer’ by the Lisbon club’s fans.

– Pereira fit –

Porto, nicknamed ‘The Dragons’, have never won in 16 previous visits to England — drawing two games and losing 14.

But they have missed just three Champions League seasons since the competition was re-branded in 1992 and are two-time European champions, making Ranieri wary of their pedigree.

“We have a lot of respect for Porto,” said the Italian, who reached the Champions League semi-finals with Chelsea in 2004.

“They are a more experienced team in Europe, they’ve played so many Champions League matches and are used to staying at the top of their league.

“In the last 10 years, they won six titles. We respect them a lot, but we’ll try to win.”

Porto are currently third in the Portuguese Liga, three points behind leaders Benfica, following a 3-1 home win over Boavista on Friday.

Porto went out in the Champions League group phase last year and new coach Nuno Espirito Santo made an inauspicious start in this season’s competition with a 1-1 draw at home to 10-man FC Copenhagen.

Porto followed it up with a disappointing 0-0 stalemate at bottom club Tondela in the league, but midfielder Danilo believes victory over Boavista has cleared away the cobwebs.

“There are no doubts that it was important to give a response to the last two slip-ups, one in the Portuguese Liga and one in the Champions League,” he said in comments published on the club website.

“We want to give a good response (against Leicester). We haven’t won yet and we need to recover the two points we lost at home.”

Uruguay right-back Maxi Pereira has been named in Porto’s squad after recovering from the leg injury he sustained in their Champions League play-off victory over Roma in August.

Nairaland / General / School- Leaver Rapes Four-year-old Girl In Her Brother’s Presence by Jahelastic(m): 11:37am On Sep 22, 2016
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old suspect, Bassey Johnson, for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl in the Idimu area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the school-leaver, who is also learning a trade, allegedly raped the girl, Fatima (pseudonym), when she and her elder brother went to watch a television in the suspect’s apartment.

The victim’s family and the suspect were said to be neighbours in the area.

Our correspondent gathered that on Sunday, around 9am, Fatima and her seven-year-old brother, Wareed, went to the suspect’s room to watch the TV.

It was learnt that while the two were in Johnson’s apartment, Wareed fell asleep.

The suspect was said to have raped the girl, after the brother slept.

A neighbour, who identified herself only as Adeyinka, said it was Fatima’s mother, who later discovered that the four-year-old had been raped when the girl continued to scratch her private parts.

She said, “Bass (Johnson) is very close to the girl’s family. They are neighbours and the children usually went to watch TV in his room. On that Sunday, the girl and her brother went into Bass’ room and while they were watching TV, the brother slept off.

“Bass thereafter raped the girl. The brother was sleeping in the room while Bass, who could not control his urge, raped the girl. After the girl came out of the room, the mother noticed that she kept crying and was scratching her private parts.

“When the mother checked Fatima’s private parts, she saw bloodstains and semen. When she confronted the perpetrator, the man confessed to the crime. That was how the matter got to the police.”

The matter was said to have been reported at the Idimu Police Division, and Johnson was arrested.

Our correspondent learnt that the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team had also stepped into the incident.

The DSVRT Coordinator, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the girl had been taken for a checkup, adding that  the Department of Public Prosecutions had requested for the duplicate case file.

She said, “The girl was taken to Rauf Aregbesola Primary Health Centre, where she was given post-exposure prophylaxis for free. The semen of the suspect was still in her pants as of the time of the treatment. The suspect ran away initially, but the girl’s father was able to arrest him through one of their neighbours.

“The matter was reported to us on Monday, and we are going to follow up on the prosecution. The girl has been treated. The DPP has also requested the duplicate case file.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the arrest, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Yaba.

She said, “The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has directed that the case be transferred to the SCIID.”

Nairaland / General / EFCC Freezes Patience Jonathan’s Personal $5m Account by Jahelastic(m): 11:22am On Sep 22, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has frozen Patience Jonathan’s personal account, titled ‘Patience Ibifaka Jonathan’, which is domiciled in Skye Bank Plc.

Impeccable sources within the agency told our correspondent on Wednesday that the move had become necessary due to the prima facie case established against the former President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife.

As part of investigations into alleged diversion against a former Special Adviser to ex-President Jonathan on Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa, the anti-graft agency had frozen four companies’ accounts in Skye Bank with a balance of $15,591,700.

However, before the EFCC could arraign the four companies in court, Jonathan’s wife deposed to an affidavit, claiming that the money belonged to her.

Despite Patience’s claims, however, the EFCC arraigned the four companies –Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited; Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Limited; Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited; and Globus Integrated Service Limited.

The companies pleaded guilty and the EFCC had already begun moves to ensure that the money is forfeited permanently to the Federal Government.

A detective at the EFCC told The PUNCH,“Recall that we had frozen the four companies’ accounts, which Patience Jonathan later laid claim to. We have been able to establish that the money was part of proceeds of crime.

“She had no evidence that the money in the four accounts belonged to her. All she had were platinum debit cards, which she was using to withdraw money and the cards are not evidence of ownership.

“Initially, we had traced $5m to her personal account, which we did not touch but I can confirm to you now that the $5m account, bearing Patience Jonathan’s name, has also been seized since she claimed that the monies in the company accounts and the one in her personal name all emanated from the same source.

“We are tracing other accounts belonging to Patience. It will interest you to know that despite all the letters she has written, she has never stated where she got the money from. She claimed to be a housewife and yet she has $20m.”

Patience had recently written a letter to the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, where she claimed that she needed the money for her medical treatment abroad.

She had also sued Skye Bank for N200m, accusing the bank of freezing her accounts unjustly.

In a letter written by her lawyers, Granville Abibo (SAN) and Co, Patience said, “It is noteworthy to emphasise that the said accounts, which were in US dollar denomination, were card-based accounts and our client is the sole signatory of these accounts.

“The said bank officials also assured our client that they will change the account names accordingly and issue to our client new credit cards for the said accounts which was not done despite repeated demands.

“However, our client has been operating the said accounts using the cards for her medical bill payments and purchases for her private purposes without any let or hindrance.

“Our client was therefore surprised when the said cards stopped functioning on July 7, 2016 or thereabout. Our client immediately thereupon contacted Skye Bank Plc through our solicitors. It was only then that the bank officials informed our client that the said accounts were placed on a ‘No Debit Order’ following investigations and instructions from your commission and this is without notice to our client by either the bank or the commission.

“It is in the light of the foregoing that we urge you to use your good offices to vacate the ‘No Debit/Freezing Order’ placed on the said accounts.”

Nairaland / General / Female Idps Engaging In Prostitution To Survive – Csos by Jahelastic(m): 6:19pm On Sep 20, 2016
The Network of Civil Society Organisations in Borno State has raised the alarm over the increasing rate of prostitution by female internally displaced persons in the state.

The Chairman of the CSOs, Ahmed Shehu, disclosed that displaced women and teenagers were engaging in prostitution in order to raise money to feed their families.

Shehu spoke at the presentation of the situational assessment of internally displaced persons in he North-East by a non-governmental Organisation, NOI Polls, on Tuesday in Abuja.

He noted that 60 per cent of female IDPs had suffered rape and other forms of sexual harassment, adding that many homes in Maiduguri and environs were now headed by teenagers whose parents had either been killed, missing or in Boko Haram captivity.

The activist stated that the development could worsen the high incidences of sexually transmitted diseases in the state.

Shehu said, “Many females were raped and killed while collecting firewood, particularly as they travelled farther from their communities. Many teenagers are heading their families now because their parents had been killed or captured by Boko Haram. The sad part of it is that many female internally displaced persons have gone into prostitution so that they can feed themselves.”

A Borno-based journalist, Mohammed Alfa, invited the anti-graft agencies to Borno State, “if they were serious about fighting corruption,” noting that foods meant for the IDPs were being diverted and sold by state government officials.

He alleged that some people had threatened his life for publishing a report on the nefarious activities going on in the camps, stressing that he was not frightened by the threat.

The NOI in its assessment, noted the cases of sexual abuse and rise in social vices in the camps and called on the government to address it.

It also affirmed incidences of corruption and sharp practices with respect to the distribution of relief materials donated to the IDPs.

“Majority of IDPs (93 per cent) attested that they don’t get most of the relief materials like food, clothes, medicines and so on, allocated to them by the government and donor agencies,” the report stated.

Nairaland / General / Cuddling And Kissing Kittens Can Kill, Scientists Warn by Jahelastic(m): 5:58pm On Sep 20, 2016
A study carried out and published in the in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases has said cuddling, kissing, and generally getting too close to cats, especially kittens can kill.

According to the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more people are getting seriously ill from Cat-scratch fever, a disease that directly comes from contact with cats that have fleas.

Cat-scratch fever is caused by a bacteria found in fleas. People get the disease from kitty scratches and bites.

The bacteria can build up in cats’ fur and make its way into your body through the nose, eyes, or mouth and Kittens are more likely than adult cats to carry the bacteria, so snuggling and kissing them can be very dangerous.

Those who have compromised immune systems have been severely affected. Many of them are children, because they love to play rough with cats.

The CDC therefore, recommends that as soon as you’re done petting your cat, wash your hands with soap and running water. Avoid kissing your cat’s fur, and don’t let your cat lick you, especially if you have open wounds. Don’t play rough with your cats, and don’t ever touch stray or feral cats. After all, cats sometimes can be finicky, and can lash out at you when you try to cuddle them.

Crime / Graduate Impersonates Bishop Kukah, Defrauds Oyedepo, Dantata, Others by Jahelastic(m): 8:03am On Sep 19, 2016
A graduate of Political Science, Jehu Kwasu, has narrated how he impersonated the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah and defrauded prominent Nigerians of millions of naira.

Kwasu said his victims included Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church Worldwide, who he claimed gave him N500,000; the Chairman, Honeywell Group, Oba Otudeko, N1m; Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, N500,000; businessman, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, N2m.

He allegedly collected the sums for Internally Displaced Persons.

He said, “I collected N500,000 from Otudeko, CEO, Honeywell: From Admiral Kanu, I got N500,000. I also got N500,000 from Bishop Oyedepo and N2m from Dantata. I also got money from Gen. Wushishi and others.

“I opened a Guaranty Trust Bank account in Bishop Kukah’s name. I registered a SIM card in my name, but used Bishop Kukah’s picture on my True Caller account, so that when I call, his picture would appear (on the recipient’s phone.)”

Kwasu, who is serving a two-month sentence in the Keffi Prison, admitted on Friday in Abuja that he realised over N5.7m.

Police sources said only N1.7m was found in his bank account, adding that the suspect spent most of the money he made on girls and hard drugs.

It was gathered that Kwasu, the son of late Anglican Bishop, James Kwasu, also exploited his father’s name, to extort money from the Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, when the latter was the Speaker, House of Representatives.

The 25-year old explained that he defrauded his victims by soliciting money on phone to cater to IDPs in the country.

The cleric’s son stated that he obtained a passport with the name, Mathew Hassah Kukah Jehu, and also opened an account with the GTB in the same name.

He said, “I called people on the telephone and told them I was Bishop Kukah. I used his picture on my True Caller account, so that when I called people, they would think he was the one talking with them.

“I also obtained a passport in Bishop Kukah’s name which I used to open an account with GTB. The money I realised was paid into the account and I used an Automated Teller Machine card to withdraw it.”

PUNCH Metro gathered that Kukah was alerted to the scam by some people close to him.

The cleric was said to have petitioned the police, which asked the bank to place a “no debit order” on the account.

Following his inability to withdraw from the account, Kwasu was said to have visited the bank to complain, where he was arrested.

Findings indicate that Kwasu had earlier been arrested and remanded in prison for impersonating Bishop Steven Akobe of the Anglican Diocese of Kabba, Kogi State, but was granted bail.

The police said Kwasu had also attempted to extort money from Senator David Mark, claiming to be Akobe.

“Mark said I should come for some money, so I sent my girlfriend. But she was arrested and I was taken to court and sentenced to two months imprisonment or N9,000 fine,” Kwasu stated.

It was gathered that the suspect, who had two female siblings, sold his deceased parents’ house in Kaduna for N10m and lavished the money on girls and a profligate lifestyle.

The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Mustafa, stated that Kwasu was arrested by the men of his command, after Kukah complained about his activities.

The CP said, “We received a petition from Bishop Kukah alleging that the boy had been impersonating him and extorting money from prominent people. So, my men went to work and were able to track the suspect and arrest him.  He is a habitual criminal and I would like to advise the public against responding to emails or phone calls from unknown persons requesting financial support for one cause or the other.”

Mustafa also called on the public to report every suspicious phone call and email to the police for investigation.

Phones / Five Ways Smartphones Can Help In Crime Fighting by Jahelastic(m): 7:39am On Sep 19, 2016
Here are five ways that you, or law enforcement agents, can use mobile  phones to fight crime:

1. Crime reporting: Mobile phones allow citizens to contact the police immediately and report crimes as they are happening. This can give law enforcement agents more accurate information and the ability to respond to criminal activities faster.

2. Evidence gathering: Since most mobile phones are equipped with cameras, bystanders can take photos or video of crime scenes and criminals. This evidence can be passed on to police or social media almost instantly, giving officers and the public the ability to identify criminals faster.

3. Evidence tracking: For the same reason, a mobile phone could be evidence in a crime. If a person’s mobile phone is stolen, tracking technology could expose the perpetrator. In addition, new smartphone technology, such as kill switches, can reduce the incentive to steal mobile phones in the first place.

4. Suspect tracking: Somewhat controversially, law enforcement agents can track a person’s movements using his or her smartphone. While this is frightening for privacy advocates, it can be essential to tracking known criminals, especially in kidnapping scenarios. Knowing exactly where a mobile phone is at a certain point in time can also help law enforcement agency recreate a person’s movements after the fact.

5. Officer policing: And, to the chagrin of many an officer trying to get away with murder, mobile phones can provide evidence of impropriety on the part of law enforcement personnel. Mobile phone video, from Eric Garner’s death to teenagers at a pool party, has been used to hold police officers accountable, and has hastened the spread of body cameras worn by officers.

Smartphones, used by citizens or police, can help reduce crime committed by citizens and police, given that all parties use them responsibly.

Nairaland / General / Man Abandons Wife In Hospital Over Unpaid N520,000 Bill by Jahelastic(m): 7:34pm On Sep 15, 2016
A mother of seven, Mrs. Uzoamaka Onu, 39, has been abandoned by her husband at the New Mayor Hospital and Fertility Centre, Nkpor in Anambra over a bill of N520,000.

The woman had stayed in the hospital for four months following the non- payment of the bill.

Uzoamaka, a food vendor from Okpoto community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi, told the News Agency of Nigeria that her husband had absconded and abandoned her to her fate.

She said that she had lived in the hospital for four months and every attempt to reach her husband had failed.

“My husband stopped visiting the hospital after I successfully underwent a surgery on my right breast,” Uzoamaka said.

She said she did not blame her husband for absconding because he had suffered a lot since 2013 when signs of cancer started manifesting.

“My husband sells rat poison and cannot afford the money to pay the balance and I think that is why he has run away.

“I am appealing to good spirited Nigerians to come to my aid and help me to get back home.

“My problem started in 2013 when I started experiencing excruciating pain in my body, specifically in my lungs.

“I started visiting patent medicine stores for solution, but unfortunately that compounded my problems.

“However, it was on the advice of some friends and family members that I decided to visit General Hospital, Abakiliki where I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Uzoamaka said.

She said she had visited the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for solution.

Uzoamaka said that she also went to the New Mayor Hospital and Fertility Centre where she had a successful surgery, leading to outright removal of her right breast.

She said that N750,000 was the total amount by the hospital management for the surgery, with her family paying N230,000, leaving the outstanding balance.

The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Ben Ossai, confirmed her story, describing the case as pathetic.

Ossai said that the woman’s right breast was in a deteriorating state and was emitting offensive odour due to the devastation the ailment had caused.

“We decided to perform a surgery on her to remove the affected breast,’’ he said.

Ossai said that Uzoamaka underwent a successful surgery and had long been discharged pending when her family would pay the balance of her medical bill.

“But for four months now, her husband has not visited and we suspected he has absconded,’’ he said.

Nairaland / General / South Africa Bans Anti-gay US Pastor by Jahelastic(m): 2:30pm On Sep 13, 2016
South Africa on Tuesday banned a Holocaust-denying, anti-gay American pastor from entering the country, after an outcry from rights groups over his characterisation of gays as “sodomites” and “paedophiles”.

Steven Anderson, who in 2009 infamously prayed for US President Barack Obama’s death, had planned a “soul-winning” visit to South Africa at the weekend.

But Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba declared the Christian preacher a “prohibited person” following objections over his “hate speech”.

“Steven Anderson and members or associates of his church are prohibited from entering the Republic of South Africa,” Gigaba said at a press conference in Cape Town.

“We have a duty to prevent harm and hatred, in all forms, against LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex) as against any other person in a democratic state,” the minister said.

Anderson has frequently courted controversy through his Arizona-based Faithful Word Baptist Church, which preaches a literal reading of the Bible.

A Holocaust denier, he prayed for the death of US President Barack Obama in 2009 over his pro-choice stance on abortion, and called the victims of the November 2015 attack on the Bataclan nightclub in Paris “devil worshipers”.

After the deadly shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando earlier this year, he said “there’s 50 less paedophiles in this world”.

And in an interview with a Cape Town radio station earlier Tuesday, Anderson called Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Anglican archbishop Desmond Tutu — a vocal supporter of the LGBTI community and whose daughter is lesbian — a “pervert… who goes around in a pink dress”.

An online petition against the planned visit to South Africa garnered over 60,000 signatures.

Responding to his ban in a Facebook post, Anderson said, “I feel sorry for people who live in South Africa.”

He said a planned visit to neighbouring Botswana, where homosexual acts are illegal, was still scheduled to go ahead.

Americans do not require visas to travel to South Africa, but Gigaba on Tuesday also revoked Anderson’s visa exemption status.

“If we find him at any of our ports of entry, we will detain and deport him,” said Gigaba.

“We don’t want him in this country.”

South Africa is one of the few countries in Africa that recognises gay rights and the only one that allows same-sex marriages.

Nairaland / General / Mortgage Firm Promises N1.5m Houses For Nigerians by Jahelastic(m): 11:07am On Sep 13, 2016
The Nigerian Mortgage Refinancing Company on Monday said it was ready to refinance a one-bedroom apartment for the citizens at a cost of N1.5m in any part of the country.

The Managing Director, NMRC, Prof. Charles Inyangete, made the pledge during a press briefing on the African Union Housing Finance Conference to be held on Wednesday in Abuja.

The NMRC was inaugurated on January 16, 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan to assist in making access to housing finance more affordable to Nigerians.

Since then, the agency has refinanced hundreds of housing projects with the injection of over N6bn liquidity into the housing market.

It is presently evaluating about 5,000 mortgages for the housing sector.

Inyangete said while the country had a huge housing deficit, the NMRC was conscious of the fact that through technology, the cost of owning a house in any part of the country could be reduced.

He said the need to start making houses more affordable for Nigerians was born out of the conviction that by 2050, about 106 million citizens would be regarded as low-income earners.

He added that by 2050, about 2.4 billion of the world’s population would not be able to cope as most of them would have been financially overstretched.

Inyangete said with the mandate given to the NMRC, the agency would provide more liquidity to the housing market.

This, he added, would assist in addressing the inequality that had been created as a result of the housing deficit.

He said, “There are a lot of initiatives that have been planned by the government to address the problem of affordable housing in the country. The issue of affordable housing is being addressed from a holistic perspective. We are ready to refinance houses for Nigerians for as low as N1.5m and we hope that we can use technology to achieve that.

“Prices of houses in Nigeria are very high and we need to build sustainable houses for the low and middle-income earners. We don’t have to build houses with materials that are imported.”

Also speaking at the briefing, the Chairman of the Board of the AUHF, Mr. Oscar Mgaya, said the conference would be attended by over 170 participants from 23 countries.

He said the conference would also serve as an advocacy platform to bring to the fore the need for the government to make the issue of housing a priority.

Nairaland / General / Why I Will Not Like To Serve As Minister Under Buhari – Okonjo-iweala by Jahelastic(m): 10:39am On Sep 13, 2016
Immediate past Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has affirmed that she would not serve in the current government of President Muhammadu Buhari, even if invited.

Okonjo-Iweala made this disclosure on Monday during a programme aired on Al Jazeera, The Stream.

According to the former minister, it would be better to allow those managing the economy now to do the best they could, stressing that there could be solutions to the present economic decline in the country.

She said, “One of the things you learn as you get wiser is to talk less as you grow older. I have spent my time contributing to the country. It will be better to leave those managing the economy to do what they know how to do. There can be solutions.

“I am not a typical politician. I went in as a technocrat. I think on the continent we have seen a period when the economy was doing well. In the last two years, we have been experiencing challenges.

“We need to focus on the basics, which are macro-economics. You must get the fundamentals like having a stable exchange rate and having inflation under control. I served my country for seven years and it was a great honour. The second time was very tough but it is still an honour.

“I am not the only person who is a repository of knowledge. There are other people who can equally try their hands in running the economy. I will advice young people not to wait for employment. They should create jobs to employ six people or more.

“During my time in government, we had a programme called ‘You Win’ designed to support young entrepreneurs.

“The whole idea was to have a business plan competition. The idea was that they should create jobs. And each created nine to 10 jobs. The World Bank did an evaluation of it and found it good. I do believe that the government should come in.

“We started a peer to peer mentoring. Now, one of the things I want to say is that creating employment is not only about struggles, it is about managing success.”

Speaking on the anti-corruption war during the two regimes in which she served, Okonjo-Iweala said: “It was a very tough fight. I must thank my team. You don’t do it alone. I had the support of an economic team in the Ministry of Finance. It was tough because at the end of the day, you need to have some principles.

“The average life span of a Finance Minister is two years in a country. No one likes a Finance Minister because it is the business of saying no. It is very difficult and challenging. It was interesting for me. I wish I had seen myself as wielding power.

“All I saw was the job because I was seeing myself working for the country.”

Nairaland / General / Student Confesses To Cheating In WASSCE, Withdraws From UNILORIN by Jahelastic(m): 1:56pm On Sep 12, 2016
Authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State on Sunday said that they had accepted the voluntary withdrawal of a student, Jephtaph Abolarin, from the institution.

Abolarin, a 300-Level Sociology student, had written to the university confessing to cheating during his West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

Abolarin, who claimed he had become a ‘born again’ Christian, said continuing his university education, using an unmerited certificate was unjust and immoral.

He wrote the letter to the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, on August 5, 2016.

According to him, he wanted to withdraw from the school because he got his WASSCE through examination malpractice.

Reacting to the letter on Sunday, the university Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, confirmed the withdrawal of the student.

Akogun, who noted that the Senate of the university had accepted the withdrawal letter, added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity.

The VC, Akogun added, wished Abolarin well in his future endeavour.

Part of Abolarin’s letter to the DVC read, “Just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain that a career that is built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse. All through my secondary school days, I was just a church ‘goer’, without genuine salvation and the fear of God. As a result, I got my WASSCE result through examination malpractice.

“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which called for repentance and restitution.

“Sir, with deep conviction, I have  realised that there is no point building my academic career on a faulty foundation; since the WASSCE result I got through malpractice is the basis in which my admission into this university was anchored.

“Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from the university and start all over again.”

Nairaland / General / My Relationship With Onyeka - KSA by Jahelastic(m): 9:35am On Sep 10, 2016
The song, Wait for me, by Onyeka Onwenu and King Sunny Ade, would remain evergreen and of course, many years ago, so many people believed that the duo would have had one or two things going on between them for them to have released such song.

However, KSA, as Sunny Ade is fondly called, during a press parley on his 70th birthday, said there was nothing between him and the Elegant Stallion, Onyeka.

According to KSA, the song was just a gimmick to drive home a message for a healthy relationship among the youth back then.

My relationship with Onyeka –KSA

“I didn’t have any crush on Onyeka then. Even before that song, we had recorded some songs together. She was (and still is) just a colleague. She is a good woman. We did that song just for us to teach the young people the essence of having a healthy relationship,” he said.

And even at the moment, KSA, who has many wives, said he is not ready to take another.

“Haba! How can I take another wife? Is that a curse or are you praying for me? I am not ready for any new wife,” he said.

Even as he is not ready to take another wife, KSA said he has a lot of reasons to thank God.

“It is just by his grace that He has made it possible for me to live up to this age. He alone has given me strength to perform. I love what I do and that is why I can never be tired. I came back from the US and I was told I had to perform somewhere and I went. I am never tired and my age will not slow me down,” he said.

And in fact, the juju icon said he is all set to roll out the drums to celebrate this milestone.

“My birthday celebration is usually a one-week affair. But this year’s birthday is different; the celebration will go on till the end of the year.”

“I started the celebration with special prayer from the general overseer of my Church, Pastor (Enoch) Adeboye.  Later this month, there will be a gospel music concert in my home in Ondo. And on my birthday, which is on September 22, my children will celebrate me. I will also visit orphanages. There are so many activities lined up. I belong to well over 70 clubs and each of this club wants to celebrate me. But the grand finale will come sometime in October with a concert where so many foreign artistes will perform,” he said.

About his US trip, KSA said he could not travel to the US few years ago because his band members were not issued visas.

“That was just the only reason and it wasn’t as if anything bad happened. The embassy had technical issues at that time. So when we went for our visas this year, everybody got. We had to travel to the US and we toured so many states for our fans over there to know that it was not our intention to disappoint them back then,” he said.

KSA also used the opportunity to talk about the case he won against African Songs where he was awarded N500m in damages; KSA said he had yet to receive the money from the record company.

“I have not seen the money and I have yet to receive my master tape. That is even more important to me than the money. I learnt they have appealed the judgement so I cannot talk much on it,” he said.

Nairaland / General / Bleak Sallah As Muslims Prioritise School Fees Over Rams by Jahelastic(m): 9:01am On Sep 10, 2016
Bleak Sallah awaits many Muslims across the country as the festival is holding a few days to a new academic session.

Findings show that many Muslim parents have opted for low key Sallah celebrations and will prioritise their children’s education and payment of their tuition over merriment and the buying of rams.

Many of the Muslim faithful, who spoke to our correspondents, said they would be celebrating the festival indoors with their families because of paucity of funds and hike in the prices of goods.

For instance, in Akure, Ondo State, the average lowest price of ram is N30, 000 as against N10, 000 in 2015 at around the same time.

One of our correspondents reports that the prices of some food items have increased by over 100 per cent as a bag of rice that was sold last year for N10, 000 now costs N21, 000.

A federal civil servant, Mr. Tunji Adeniran, said he would not buy rams for the festival because doing that would affect the payment of his children’s tuition.

He said, “We have not been paid salary for August and I have no money in reserve. But even if I get paid before Monday, I will use the money to pay for the school fees of my children who will be resuming next week.”

Another resident of Akure, Alhaji Muritala Olabisi, said for the first time as a family man, he would not be buying rams for Sallah celebration.

He said, “I only intend to go to the Eid praying ground on that day and return home to my family.

“It is very unfortunate that we are experiencing a period like this; this has never happened to me before. Life is so tough for the people. The little money I have now cannot be spent on celebration. In few days from now, schools will resume and I have to pay my children’s school fees.”

In Lagos, the story is the same as many Muslims also lamented the effect of the economic situation on their finances.

A ram that cost N50, 000 in the metropolis around Sallah period in 2015 now costs about N80, 000.

A resident businessman, Alhaji Akanni Yusuf, who bought two rams for Sallah in 2015, said he would not be buying any this year.

Yusuf said his priority was paying his children’s tuition, which was over N350,000.

“By this time last year, I had bought two rams at the rate of N45,000 each, clothes for my children and the house had been stuffed with drinks, but I have decided not to buy anything because of the economic situation and my financial obligations.”

“My three daughters will be resuming school a week after Sallah. Their new tuition is N350, 000. This is apart from books and other materials they will need,” he said.

Muslims that are civil servants in Osun State said Sallah would be celebrated in low key due to the financial challenges facing the state and its people.

The Chairman of the Osun State wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Mr. Wakeel Amudah, told one of our correspondents in Osogbo that although the state government paid half salary for June, many teachers would not get anything from their salaries because their banks would have deducted all of it to service their loans.

He said, “I have not bought any ram now. I don’t know how it will be done. So I can tell you that the celebrations will be low key in Osun State.

“The half salary for the month of June has been paid but the money is not leaving the banks because many won’t get a dime from it. The banks would have used the entire money to service the loans taken by workers.”

Traders, Mrs. Moriyeba Jamiu and Mrs. Fatima Olootu, said they were not making any preparations for the Sallah, adding that there were more pressing issues to spend money on than the festival.

Against the background of current economic challenges in Nigeria, many Muslim faithful in Katsina State said Sallah celebrations would be low key this year.

Many Muslims, who used to slaughter the symbolic rams during the annual festival, told one of our correspondents that they would not buy rams this year.

It was observed that many ram traders had relocated from the popular ram markets at Mayardua, Mashi, Dankama, Charanchi and Batsari to major streets in Katsina city with a view to getting more patronage.

However, despite their efforts, the ram traders said they were recording low sales.

One of them, Salisu Yesufu, said he sold average of two rams weekly, adding that many people have been complaining about paucity of funds.

A parent, who is a civil servant, Mallam Musa Funtua, said, “We cannot afford to buy any ram because of the situation in the country. But for Muslims, buying rams for Sallah is not compulsory and people should not borrow money to do so.”

When one of our correspondents visited the ram market in North Bank, Makurdi, a ram dealer, Ibrahim Sule, said the customers had been complaining about lack of funds.

He added that after much haggling over the prices of rams; customers would turn around and leave.

Alhaji Adam Musa, a beans seller, said, “Economically, the situation is not encouraging; spending during this period is hard. Last year, the economy was better and you know that schools will be resuming and children will be returning to school. So, even me, I will not buy ram this time but use the money with me to pay my children school fees.’’

Another Muslim, Abba Bello, said a week to Sallah last year, he had bought more than three rams but lamented how he was unable to buy any this time around due to the economic crisis.

Bello, however, appealed to the government to breathe life into the economy.

In Kwara State, many Muslims also expressed concern that the Sallah celebrations would be bleak as a result of financial constraints and high prices of rams and food items like rice, onions, and groundnut oil.

A civil servant in the state, Alhaji Bolaji Ajibade, claimed that this year’s Sallah would be the worst that he would experience.

Another Muslim, Alhaji Muyideen Ishaq, said he had decided to kill two chickens to celebrate Sallah with his family since he could not afford to buy a ram.

He said he would only visit the praying ground and return home to his family on Sallah day.

Also, Alhaja Simbiat Ambali, said she would only cook for her immediate family as against her previous practice of cooking for extended family members and friends since she could not afford such lavish merriment.

She also said she would not take her children to fun centres so as to save some money to buy their school uniforms and pay part of their school fees.

Investigations by our correspondent in Ilorin revealed that small sized rams now sell for between N40,000 and N50,000; medium sized rams go for between  N65,000 and N70,000; while big sized rams sell between N120,000 and N140,000 as against last year when small sized rams could be bought at a price between N25,000 and N30,000; medium sized ram (between N35,000 and N40,000); big sized rams (between N50,000 and N60,000).

In view of the harsh economic crisis in the country, Muslims in Delta State said this year’s Sallah would witness a low-key celebration.

As of Friday morning, many Muslims in the state said there was no hope they would cook, let alone kill any ram to mark the event.

Our correspondent, who visited the ram market situated along the Benin/Effurun Expressway and the Effurun market in Uvwie Council Area of the state, observed a significant rise in the prices of goods and food items.

The situation was not different at the Igbodu market in Warri South.

A bag of rice which sold for N12,000 this time in 2015 now goes for N22,000. A gallon of palm oil now sells for N2,000 as against N1,200 six months ago.

A Muslim cleric and a store owner at Igbudu market, Alhaji Musa Sadiq, said, “I know many people with numerous problems. Nigerians only feel the impact of government policies during celebrations. Prices of foodstuff have gone up. The non-payment of workers’ salaries has made things difficult for those of us celebrating.”

Chairman, League of Imams and head of the Muslim community in Delta State, Mustapha Ahmed, also said this year’s Sallah celebrations would be low-key.

Also in Kaduna, the traditional title holder of Ciroman Laduga in Kachia, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Alhaji Ibrahim Bayero, lamented the effect the economic crisis will have on this year’s Sallah celebrations across the country.

Bayero noted that he used to buy a ram for his aged mother for Sallah, but regretted that he could not afford such luxury this year.

He said, “There will be no celebration at all; the situation now really shows that people are suffering.”

Phones / U.S. And Samsung Tell Galaxy Note 7 Owners: Power Down Now by Jahelastic(m): 8:14am On Sep 10, 2016
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Samsung are urging owners of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphones to stop using the devices while they work to formalize how a recall will work.

The warning comes a week afterSamsung (SSNLF) announced a voluntary recall of 2.5 million phones worldwide because of a battery problem believed to affect 0.1% of all devices. Some customers reported that their Note 7s caught fire.

A government recall would outlaw the selling of the phone. In its statement, the agency asked owners of the Note 7 "to power them down and stop charging or using the device" in the meantime.

Details on an official recall will come "as soon as possible," the agency said.

Tim Baxter, president of Samsung Electronics America, said the company is collaborating with CPSC and its carrier partners to ensure all Note 7 users are alerted.

Samsung, based in South Korea, has been offering U.S. customers a different phone, the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge, and a $25 gift card or bill credit.

Following the U.S. announcement, Samsung on Saturday advised Note 7 owners in South Korea to stop using the devices. It urged them to visit their nearest Samsung service center where they will receive a different phone.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the advice is being extended to the other eight countries where Samsung is recalling the Note 7.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday warned airline passengers to not use or charge their Note 7s on board an aircraft and not to stow the phones in checked baggage.

Nairaland / General / Breakfast Mistakes You Need To Avoid by Jahelastic(m): 2:46pm On Sep 06, 2016
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but what people do not know about this meal is that if they skip this meal, it could have an adverse effect on their weight. Akansha Jhalani, Registered Dietitian and health blogger at Beyond The Weighing Scale, helps you decode the myths associated with breakfast, so that you enjoy the most important meal of the day in a healthy way.

Juicing your fruit: When you start your blender to juice oranges,  remember that this process causes the fruit to lose most of its vitamins, minerals and fibre. Instead, replace your juice with a glass of water and a whole fruit. It will save you some extra calories.

Eating a baby size breakfast: Eating whatever you want cannot help you escape from those extra calories. It is a common myth that eating whatever you wish after a long gap of fasting will not make you gain weight. Oily parathas, waffles, leftover dinner can lead to extra calorie consumption.

Beware of breakfast treats: The tempting doughnuts and muffins can cause as much as an entire meal’s caloric consumption. When placed in front of you, take a deep breath and realise that you have set healthy lifestyle changes and politely decline.

Monitor your caffeine intake: One cup of coffee or tea could help boost your mood and metabolism, but avoid drinking multiple cups of coffee. This can cause sleep deprivation and coffee add-ons can reflect on your body in a bad way.

Unhealthy breakfast: Eat a fist full of nuts, a bowl of cereal and a whole fruit instead of chocolate pancakes, muffins and mayo sandwiches. High calorie and high fat items can cause a sugar spike and recurring spikes could cause health issues.

Thinking breakfast is not important: Even if you feel full from the previous day’s dinner or are in a rush, make sure you eat a quick breakfast. Skipping breakfast slows down our metabolism and makes us feel lethargic. A slice of whole-wheat toast, a fruit or a fist full of sprouts can do the trick.

Avoid breakfast buffets: Buffets and large breakfast spreads could make you eat more than you need. Do not stuff yourself silly by opting for sugar coated cereals, doughnuts and fruit cocktails. Instead, choose egg preparations, leaner meats, oats, wheat flakes and milk.

Gorging on food early in the morning: Have a glass of luke warm water, first thing in the morning. It helps to keep you hydrated, aids digestion, cures gastric ailments and gives you a feeling of fullness.

Not eating a healthy breakfast: Try and eat a healthy breakfast like green tea with a lemon wedge, oats with half a banana/ an egg preparation with an orange and whole wheat toast.

Nairaland / General / Nigerians Are Hypocrites, They Condemn Me For Wearing T-shirt But Hail Zuckerber by Jahelastic(m): 10:14am On Sep 06, 2016
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has reacted to some state and burning national issues.

In his regular #FayoseSpeak series, the governor disclosed that he will be going round the local governments to monitor workers to ensure they resumed at their offices.

Speaking on the state of the economy, he said “If your salary is N100,000, know fully now that you are collecting N50.000 all because of the economy recession in the country, what you are buying in market is now times three of the initial price.

“Soon there would be free health care across the state because majority couldn’t afford hospital bill due to the current economy recession.

“LG autonomy is a must and there is no going back on it here in Ekiti because the LG must be allowed to function.

“Because of bad state of the country’s economy, a lot of Nigerians can no longer afford medicare. People are now going to spiritualists to seek treatment for their ailments.

“Whatever I do, they will condemn. When I wore T-shirt to the House of Assembly, they said I didn’t dress properly. But when the Facebook founder came to Nigeria, wearing T-shirt and jeans, they hailed him. They said he was humble. Hypocrites, that’s what they are.

“They are worried because what they failed to do, I am doing and they will remain in that state of worries.

“I declare whatever comes to Ekiti from the Federation Account every month and technology has even made it compulsory for leaders to be transparent. If I don’t tell Ekiti people what their monthly income is, they can always get it on the Internet.

“On Ekiti State at 20, I want to thank God specially. When Ekiti was 10, I was the governor, I’m also governor when Ekiti will be 20.

“Ekiti people should come out and x-ray those that have ruled this State and tell the world who impacted most on the state.

“Of all the governors put together, Fayemi got the highest fund. His govt got more money than Adebayo, Oni and my govt put together.

“Most of the landmark projects in Ekiti State were done by me.

“Since 2014 October that I assumed office, we have not had any political killing in Ekiti.”

Nairaland / General / Why We Arraigned Man Who Named Dog Buhari – Police by Jahelastic(m): 8:02am On Aug 30, 2016
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Abdulmajid Ali, says the case of Joe Chinakwe, who named his dog Buhari, has no connection with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The AIG said the man named after his neighbour’s father and not the President.

He said Chinakwe was not arraigned for naming the dog Buhari, but for inscribing the name on both sides of the dog and parading it around the Ketere area of Sango Ota, in the Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, adding that his behaviour was capable of causing a breach of the peace.

Chinakwe, who had been released on bail, was arraigned after his neighbour, Halilu Umar, whose late father bore Buhari, reported him to the police.

In a statement on Monday, by the zone 2 command spokesperson, SP Muyiwa Adejobi, the AIG, stated that the case was misconstrued as an attack on the President.

The statement read in part, “The case has nothing to do with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Mohammad Buhari, but with one Alhaji Buhari, the biological father of the complainant, Alhaji Halilu Umar.”

“It is fundamental to state that the man was not charged to court for christening his dog Buhari, but for the behaviour of the suspect and  circumstances surrounding  the matter when Mr. Joe (Chinakwe), who had been having conflicts with his neighbour,(complainant) named his dog Buhari, his neighbour’s father’s name, inscribed  Buhari on both sides of the said dog, and started parading the dog with swagger among his neighbours and traders who are mostly northerners.”
