Crime / Re: 22-year-old Notorious Criminal Rearrested After Escaping From Prison. Photo by Jalingo767(m): 10:21am On Feb 02, 2019
HitNigeria:
A 22-year-old herder, Ibrahim Umaru, has been rearrested by the police after he allegedly escaped from prison custody where he was serving a five-year jail term for unlawful possession of firearms.

Umaru, who reportedly joined a robbery gang after his escape, was apprehended recently in Asaba, Delta State by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team.

It was learnt that Umaru was caught with an AK-47 by a police patrol team sometime in 2014 when he led his cows to graze on a bush along Ogwashi-Uku Road, Delta.
He was said to have been charged to court with illegal possession of firearm – an offence to which he allegedly pleaded guilty.

It was gathered that the father of two was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and was kept at the Ogwashi-Uku Prison. It was learnt that in 2018, warders led Umaru and some prisoners to clean the prison surroundings when he escaped.
He reportedly joined a robbery gang some months later and participated in an attack on a filling station in Asaba. Following a report to the police about the attack, IRT operatives launched a manhunt for the gang.

A police source said Umaru, after escaping from the prison, fled to Sokoto and later relocated to Kwara State.
The source said Umaru thereafter moved to Zamfara State, where he allegedly took part in several armed robberies, cattle rustling and kidnapping.

The source said, “Umaru was first arrested in 2014 when policemen on patrol accosted him as he was leading his cows to graze along Ogwashi-Uku Road. They searched and found a gun on him. He was charged with illegal possession of firearm and was taken to court. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison. He escaped from the prison last year and later joined some bandits and cattle rustlers in Zamfara.

“He later returned to Asaba, Delta State with an AK-47 which he used in terrorising residents and business owners. Operatives acted on a tip-off and trailed him to a forest where he was arrested and the gun was recovered from him.”

The suspect, who hails from Sokoto State, in his statement to detectives, explained that he was recruited by one Buhari Daji to become a cattle rustler in Zamfara, noting that he relocated to Delta after the kingpin was killed.

He said, “My father taught me how to rear cows. There were 33 cows in my care. In 2014, some policemen stopped me around Ogwashi-Uku and searched me and my cows. They found a locally-made gun on one of the cows. I was taken to a police station and charged to court where I pleaded guilty. I was sentenced to five years.

“One day, I was taken out of the prison to clear grass within and outside prison premises and managed to escape. I had N200 on me and I hailed a cab that took me down to Mariam Babaginda Road, Asaba. From there, I approached a truck driver and I explained my plight to him.”

He said the driver took him to his hometown in Sokoto where he spent five months before he left for Kwara State, where a friend linked him up with Daji in Zamfara.
Umaru added that when he got home, he met his mother very sick while his father was dead.

“I went to join Daji’s gang in Zamfara and he gave me a gun. I worked once for him, then I brought the gun to Asaba and I linked up with one of my friends known as Baba. He suggested that we should rob a filling station along Ibuzo Road. We went there at night. I was on my way to Baba’s house one month after the operation when policemen arrested me with the gun,” the suspect added.

Politics / Re: Federal Government To Establish Entrepreneur Bank – Osinbajo by Jalingo767(m): 10:05am On Feb 02, 2019
pre5:
Federal Government To Establish Entrepreneur Bank – Osinbajo

Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo disclosed this while addressing the All Progressives Congress (APC) rally held on Friday at Nsit Atai Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

Osinbajo said that the bank, when established, would give loans to youths and women at very low interest rate to improve their businesses.

He told the party supporters that when APC in 2015 promised to provide jobs for five million Nigerians, the opposition party did not believe, he however stressed that the party had delivered on its campaign promises.

N-Power is only the beginning; we are starting something called the entrepreneur bank. That bank is for giving loans to men and women like this in N-Power who have a plan for the future.

The loans will be given to them at very little interest rate so that they can start their own businesses, and so that they can make progress.

When we said in 2015 that we will start N-Power, they said it was impossible, that how can you employ five million people? But we have done it.

We said we were going to do home-grown school feeding, today we are feeding 9.2 million children all over Nigeria.

They say it is impossible but home-grown school feeding is here. Home-grown school feeding used 6.8million eggs in one week and we are expanding it.

If you are a young man or woman here and you vote for PDP, know that you are living in the past, every young man or woman must go to the next level.

If you have voted PDP in the past, apologise and say we are going to the next level.

I cannot remain on the same level. The next level is where it is happening. Everything we said we will do, we have already done and we will do more, Osinbajo said.

The vice president urged Akwa Ibom people not play opposition, stressing that the state was strategically positioned for development.

According to him, palm oil being abundant in the state when properly harnessed, would replace crude oil and boost the its economy.

We have found here palm oil which will be a replacement for crude oil, so we are going to be number one in this local government. That is one of the reasons that you must join the Federal Government under the APC.

Akwa Ibom should not be in opposition, no reason. There is every reason for youto join so that you become part of the next level.

All of the young people who are here, the government of President Buhari is determined to make sure that not only do you have jobs, you have quality jobs.

That is one of the most important things we are doing. That is why you must support APC, he said.

Earlier, the APC governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom, Mr Nsima Ekere, assured that the Federal Government that the state had resources to replace crude oil with palm oil.

Ekere said that when crude oil was no more Akwa Ibom palm oil would sustain the nations economy.

Mr Vice President, as you are going, take the message the message to the president that when crude oil is finished, we will sustain the economy with our palm oil, Ekere said.

Sports / Re: Suarez Speaks On Neymar Returning To Barcelona by Jalingo767(m): 9:40am On Feb 02, 2019
Nairatrenders:
Barcelona striker, Luis Suarez, has said he would welcome the return of Neymar, but admits that any move to bring the Brazilian back from Paris Saint-Germain would be “complicated”.

Neymar took the decision to take on a new challenge in the summer of 2017.

PSG paid a record-breaking €222million, to buy the 26-year-old, who scored 105 goals during his four-year spell at the Nou Camp.

Suarez, who flourished as part of the fearsome ‘MSN’ frontline which also included Lionel Messi, admits he would like to have Neymar back alongside him.

The Uruguayan is however not convinced that a deal could be done.

“In football, I always say that you never know what can happen.

“Today he is enjoying himself immensely in Paris. It is clear he has objectives there.

“But obviously as a strike partner, friend or fan I always want the best by my side. But it is something hypothetical and impossible to predict.

“He is a player that makes a difference.

“But you also have to be aware that the decision you made at the time of leaving was as complicated as it would be now if you decided to return,” he told Sport.

Romance / Re: Update On 15-Year-Old Girl Who Married A 56-Year-Old 'Demented' Man In Anambra by Jalingo767(m): 9:30am On Feb 02, 2019
ELVISHOT:
We have more details about the 15-year-old who was married off to an allegedly demented man from the wealthy Igwilo family in Ozubulu community in Anambra state.

Activist, Prince Harrison Gwamnishu, who visited Anambra state after the story went viral, said the said girl is from Ihiala community and is actually 15 going on 16.

Harrison in an interview with LIB, said the girl is from a very poor family and that she had a child when she was in primary 5 and had to quit school. Her family couldn’t continue sponsoring her education and also taking care of her child so they decided that they were going to marry her off to Izuchukwu who came recently with his family members to ask for her hand in marriage. Acording to the family, they believe no one would come for the little girl’s hand in marriage since she has a child.

Harrison says the Igwilos really want Izuchukwu to get married and also have children of his own, hence they have accepted to have the girl come into their family with her own child. Izuchukwu’s brothers, who are said to be wealthy, have pledged to sponsor the girl’s child and any children she and their brother will have together.

The traditional wedding of Izuchukwu and the teen girl is slated for Easter this year and, according to Harrison, a lot of money running into millions of Naira has been budgetted for the ceremony.

Until the girl come out of Igwilo house we aren't giving up.

Celebrities / Re: Opeyemi Aiyeola: Why I Left Nigeria For UK At The Peak Of My Career by Jalingo767(m): 9:13am On Feb 02, 2019
GistMore:
Popular actor and producer, Opeyemi Aiyeola, was away from the movie scene for a decade after she got married. She later resumed acting in 2017, but while speaking to Saturday Beats, Aiyeola noted that a lot of things had changed in the industry from the time she left in 2007.

Emphasising that success in the industry was determined by talents in those days, she added that climbing the ladder of stardom now has been laced with favoritism.

“Nollywood used to be an industry of talents; unfortunately when I came back, I realised it was no longer a career path of talented people. It is now about social media. It is more about how much money an individual has to spend on publicity and the likes.

“So many people even get undeserved awards these days. Outside the movie set, the industry has become a world of make-believe. For example, everybody expects me to do photo shoots for birthdays and Valentine’s Day and I always wonder what could be the reason behind that. And me, I have responsibilities and children to cater for, so I can’t be doing all that.

“I have family members I am responsible for. It is crazily exciting and frustrating sometimes. It depends on how I handle it, sincerely, if I decide to roll the way they roll, it will be frustrating for me. When I go on social media, I just laugh these days. There was a time I wanted to give up because it was too much for me, I couldn’t cope. A lot of people, who know me, know I am not fashionable.

“There are times I want to go out without makeup or wig, but these days, it is crazy. There was one morning that I was with a colleague and we met this wonderful male fan; he wanted to take pictures with us. My colleague declined because she didn’t have any makeup on, she stressed that the man might tag her on the picture and she didn’t want to be seen like that. I took a picture with him the way I was.

“Interestingly, when he posted the picture on social media, I received a lot of negative comments because of the way I looked in the picture; it can be extremely frustrating. Social media is a world I don’t understand; that is why I am always quiet there. I have the power to delete and block any negative comments; it is that simple. I make conscious efforts not to expose myself to negative news; the good thing is that it will go away with time. I left in 2007; I came back fully in 2017. I did bits of work once in a while before then,” she told Saturday Beats.

Aiyeola also noted that building a family with her husband was her priority when she got married and relocated. She also explained the efforts she made to ensure her children understood Yoruba culture.

“I relocated for marital reasons. When I left for the UK; building a family together with my husband was my priority. I feel there is always time for everything; nothing else was more important to me than my family. After raising my children, I thought the time was right for me to come back, so I came back to Nigeria to do more movies. I discussed it with my husband and he was in support; I tried to pick up from where I left.

“As a Yoruba woman, I try to speak my language to my children, we cook more of Nigerian dishes in the house; I don’t really like foreign delicacies. I really don’t have a favourite meal, I drink a lot of garri and groundnut every day; and I think I am even addicted to it,” she said.

When asked about the effect marriage had on her career, she noted that she left the industry at a time when things were getting better.

“Marriage had a great effect on my career because I left at a time when things were getting better in the industry, in terms of endorsements, and the likes. In my book, there is always a price to pay for everything. It costs some people money and some their career; it is all about sacrifice. Considering my age, when I got married, doing that and having children was more important to me at the time. I won’t crucify or judge anybody for their choices, it is an individual race.

“However, it is important to marry when the right person comes, not being bound by age. That is the mistake some people make these days; life can be complicated. I advise young people to always get married when they find the right person. Another issue ladies should consider is that a woman’s fertility period is limited, so in their pursuit of career and money, they should always be conscious of the period of grace they have as regards their fertility. It is nature; it is not anybody’s fault.

“Some women have missed their destined time to get married and have children; this may make them settle for less, or spend a lot of money trying to have children. Some people don’t even want to have children, so it solely depends on individuals. Everybody has their own time,” she said.

Politics / Re: Onnoghen Should Resign – Lawyers by Jalingo767(m): 8:05am On Feb 02, 2019
ojikeebere12:
Eminent Nigerian lawyers and a state governor yesterday faulted the explanations of suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, on how he got the foreign currencies he deposited in his domiciliary accounts and asked him to quit now that the odds still favour him.

Ahead of his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Monday February 4, 2019, Onnoghen had given details on how he got the money to open the controversial domiciliary accounts.

But, in separate interviews with LEADERSHIP WEEKEND yesterday, the lawyers said that Justice Onnoghen would do himself good, give the judiciary a lease of life and integrity and his family and well-wishers a sense of honour and pride, by resigning from office.

They argued that if he takes a bow now, it will give him the opportunity to negotiate for soft-landing rather than giving explanations which will further criminalise him.

They also said that the question shall arise in the court for instance for him to explain how he got the money to start his ‘’Bureau De Change’’ business outfit.

Besides, the lawyers said that it is against the code of conduct for judicial officers for him to involve himself in other businesses, except farming.

It is not dignifying for him according to the lawyers to be listing items such as trading in foreign exchange (forex), AGRICODE, while other investment returns were from proceeds of his investments.

The lawyers insisted that there is no way the prosecution will not add these items as part of the charges brought against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) or any other courts he would be taken to for trial.

Rather than appearing before the courts he left 30-35 years back in the course of his judicial career to go and take a plea, he should muster enough courage to preserve the honour and prestige of his present position and take a bow.

Among lawyers, who advised Onnoghen to leave without further delay, is the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN).

He said: ‘’It is against the code of conduct of judicial officers to be involved in other businesses except agricultural production.

‘’Rather than deepening and deepening himself in the criminality, he should do himself a favour, give the judiciary a lease of life and integrity and his family and well-wishers a sense of honour and pride by resigning from office.

“The question shall be asked as to where he got the money to start the Bureau De Change business, and since it is against the code of conduct of his profession and that of civil service in general, the prosecution would be right to add that to charges brought against him.’’

In his own case, Barr Alasan Samaila said: ‘’The greatest casualty in this Justice Onnoghen foreign account saga is the image of the judiciary in Nigeria and outside world. It would be advisable for Justice Onnoghen to take a quiet exit instead for allowing the retinue of his defence counsel to be plunging him, his family name, the judiciary and the nation further and deeper in the mess called trial.

‘’The so-called AGRICODE, whatever that means to him can’t be taken for agricultural production business. It is euphemism for Bureau De Change which he is not entitled to be involved in as a judicial officer.

‘’All these explanation as to how he got the humongous foreign currency account balances and transactions won’t take away the age-long position that judges are allegedly trading with judgements they deliver in courts.

“No average Nigerian would believe him, irrespective of the explanation he gives, that these monies are not proceeds of sales of judgements,’’ he said.

In his view, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN) said that Onnoghen cannot be prosecuted for forgetfulness

According to him, once a civil servant forgets to declare his asset and he was able to correct it, he cannot be prosecuted.

Raji said: “I don’t think he can be prosecuted for forgetfulness since he has been reminded and has promptly corrected it”.

Similarly, former secretary-general of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Afam Osigwe, said that he would not like to comment on the matter since it is already before the courts.

He however said that failure to declare is different from forgetting to declare.

“In my view, I think these are the issues his lawyer will put forward before the court.”

Another lawyer, Malam Abdu Gomu, asserted that Justice Onnghen has not committed any criminal offence by saying that he forgot to declare his asset and for the fact that he corrected it later.

“Let me tell you, forgetting to declare your assets is not a criminal offence once your attention is drawn to it and it is corrected.”

Section 3 of the CCB Act does not criminalise forgetfulness.

The section says that “the Code of Conduct Bureau is empowered to receive complaints about non-compliance with or breach of this Act and where the Bureau considers it necessary to do so, refers such complaints to the Code of Conduct Tribunal established by section 20 of this Act in accordance with the provisions of sections 20 to 25 of this Act:

“Provided that where the person concerned makes a written admission of such breach or non-compliance, no reference to the tribunal shall be necessary.”

Mr. Niyi Akintola (SAN), said: ‘’I am a lawyer, you don’t expect me to be commenting on matters in the court. It is subjudice and I can be held for contempt of court. The court should be allowed to determine whether what he tendered is right or wrong.’’

In his reaction, Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State said that for Onnoghen to claim that he forgot to declare the millions of dollars traced to his domiciliary accounts meant that he is richer than the richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote,

He argued that even Dangote would never forget a million dollars in any bank account and therefore advised Onnoghen to resign as the substantive CJN.

He spoke yesterday when members of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) protested to the Government House in Kaduna the continued stay of Onnoghen in office.

El-Rufai said that it was shocking that with just over 20 years in public service, Onnoghen had possibly made more money than Dangote.

“The case of Justice Onnoghen is one in which somebody who has worked in government for past 20 years suddenly has millions of dollars in his account.

“He has admitted, but says he has forgotten about them. I want to express happiness to all of you for coming together to convey this very clear statement from the people of Kaduna State that in Kaduna, we do not support corruption; in Kaduna; we do not support injustice; we are 100 per cent behind the integrity of our President.

“The case with Justice Onnoghen is a very sad one. Othman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, wrote that the worst form of corruption you can find in any public service is judicial corruption,” he said.

But, in a press statement last night, the national president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr, Paul Usoro (SAN) praised lawyers in the country for obeying the court boycott directive by the association over the Onnoghen saga.

He said: “I write to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all our members for the overwhelming support that the NBA NEC received from you in regard to the boycott of courts that was mandated by NEC at its emergency meeting held on 28th January 2019. Reports from the chairmen of our branches across the country confirmed overwhelming compliance with the NEC directives on the two-day court boycott on 29th and 30th January, 2019. There were of course pockets of non-compliance in some branches, but these were isolated incidents and in the extreme minority.

“In that regard, all the resolutions of the NBA NEC at its afore-referenced emergency meeting remain extant and binding on all of us. We continue to call on the Executive arm of the federal government to reverse its various actions against the CJN and stop his trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal,” Usoro said.

The CCB had queried Onnoghen over his failure to fully declare his assets.

But, in his reply to the query, Onnoghen said that he forgot to do so.

Herdsmen ambush and kill police ASP in Delta State

Suspected herdsmen have shot and killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, at Umuachi-Afor community, Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Delta State.

According to reports, the police officer who until his death, was attached to the Ashaka police divisional headquarters, had led a team of police officers in search of the herdsmen who have been terrorizing the area with kidnapping activities when he met with his untimely death on Thursday.

Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Andrew Aniamaka, while confirming the incident, said: “we had a situation where someone was abducted and that took our men into the bush in search of the hoodlums.

On their way, they were ambushed by the armed herdsmen who, in fact, opened fire on the police rescue team. In the process, the ASP was hit by bullets. Aniamaka, however, refused to disclose the identity of the deceased police officer, saying “His family is not yet aware of the development.”

He said the officer died in the hospital where he was rushed to for treatment. According to him, “There is reinforcement into the bush and we are getting support from the local vigilante team.”
