Whether by design, by accident, or simply out of necessity, SremmLife 2 deconstructs the party-rap formula the duo perfected on their debut, zigging and zagging from Drake-esque rap-sung half-ballads (“Now That I Know”) to Mustard’s “ratchet music” (“Set the Roof,” with a Lil Jon-feature nod to crunk) to sugary bubblegum rap (“Just Like Us”), all while maintaining the spirit at the core of SremmLife.
SremmLife 2 (sometimes stylized as SremmLife II) is the second studio album by American hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd. It was released on August 12, 2016, by Ear Drummer Records and Interscope Records.[1] The album serves as a sequel to their previous studio effort, SremmLife (2015). It features guest appearances from Kodak Black, Gucci Mane, Juicy J, LilJon and Bobo Swae.

The weirdest and wildest moments on SremmLife 2 are its lifeblood. The album is stranger, artsier, and flat-out ballsier than its predecessor, especially considering the stakes (SremmLife produced five platinum singles; this is a follow-up thatdoesn’t seem to care much about that.)

It is his first album since 2014's You're Dead!.[2] The lead single, the spoken-word "Fire Is Coming" featuring David Lynch, was released along with its video on April 17, 2019.[3] The album also features contributions from Anderson Paak, George Clinton, Little Dragon, Tierra Whack, Denzel Curry, Shabazz Palaces, Thundercat, Toro y Moi and Solange.
Sweeping, prismatic jazz-funk predominates, but there is no shortage of surprises. The 89-second “Andromeda,” a co-write with Thundercat, sounds like Flying Lotus’ take on Radiohead’s version of post-rock. “Say Something,” even shorter, might be Tom Waits soundtracking a Wes Anderson film. “Pygmy,” a late-album highlight, drizzles Thundercat’s high-necked bass melody over rainforest samples and a beat that swishes like a rushing river; it’s as moving as it is simple.

For all the clarity that the image of a flame on a hill might suggest, there is a lot of murk and confusion. There’s a lot of everything; fortunately, that goes both ways. There are bouts of thick, gloopy overload but also instances of crystalline focus; there are serpentine jazz-funk rave-ups and moments of profound stillness. In keeping with a lot of beat music, many of these tracks are relatively short.
