Nairaland / General / Re: Photos From The Fatal Accident On Ikorodu Road This Morning by Jason2014(m): 2:48pm On Mar 17, 2015
RIP to the dead.

I've a standard rule and that is i do my best not to drive behind fuel/diesel tankers (loaded or not)
and also container drivers ("20'' or "40" feet).

I've seen more than enough accidents by these long machines that i'm always careful.

Yes, i know it is God that protects, but then whatever i can do to steer clear from them, i do
regardless of the honking of motorists behind me.

I claim the covenant promises of Psalm 91 for myself, family and all nairaland members in Jesus name.

Before anyone buys anything called land or building at Ajah, please, make sure you do your "Due Diligence" very well.

I bought one for a client sometime last year at Okun Ajah. Till date i've an unresolved challenge in that neighbourhood
even though i did all the legal documentation and engaged a lawyer.

Please, no one should just jump into buying anything until you have prayed through and done your due diligence.

It is that serious.
Business / Using Computer Software For Processing Your Business' Bookkeeping by Jason2014(m): 12:31pm On Mar 05, 2015
This article is written by Derek Dale.

Over the years, the computerised bookkeeping software has become more accessible and much easier to use for the novice bookkeeper. All computerised bookkeeping software is based on the principles of double entry bookkeeping and it would be wise to undertake at the very minimum some free bookkeeping training so you understand the principles of double-entry bookkeeping.

If you maintain your accounts on a regular and frequent basis you will find the processing of transactions much quicker. The transactions will be fresh in your mind so you will not have many puzzling moments when you forget details about transactions that you will inevitably have if you only do your accounts every three months when your VAT returns are due also you will not have such a big pile of invoices to process so it will not feel as daunting to you.

You need to carefully consider what software you need for your requirements, some software companies offer free cash book software and this might be suitable for a small retail business. You can then look for more complex software that will allow you to enter journals, raise invoices and manage debtors control accounts and creditors control accounts. Please don't fall into the mistake that so many businesses do which, is they purchase the most expensive software thinking its the best for the job, there are many cheap packages that will suit most small businesses and indeed some of the cheaper packages are easier to use for the novice bookkeeper. It is worth the research time to have a look around the internet and bookkeeping forums to see what package will suit your needs.

The easiest time to commence computerised bookkeeping is from the day the business starts to trade, or if it is already trading from the first day of the businesses financial year, this is because you will have all the opening balances from your accounts and your accountant should be able to help with the opening balances needed for your new bookkeeping system.

There is plenty of support and forums on the internet that can help you become competent with processing your own bookkeeping and thereby putting you more in financial control of your business and at the same time reducing your accountancy fees.

The first thing to look at in your software is the chart of accounts, most packages are based on a chart of accounts, this will detail the structure of your profit and loss account that the software will produce. This is where you can personalise the accounts so the reflect your businesses needs and the accounts will be easy to read. The standard chart of accounts is normally adequate for most businesses needs, but its well worth the effort to have a look before you start entering your transactions.

Since the question is not specific - Super Eagles, Flying Eagles or Golden Eaglets.

A name readily comes to mind - Eddy Dombraye 1999 set with Joseph Yobo.

He didn't do too good at all.

This is the kind of news that makes me think of relocating abroad.

Twelve year old girls in my neighbourhood, if they are not terminating unwanted pregnancies,
they are busy with banging loosely and exercising themselves in irrelevancies.

The young girl looks to me like a little kid trained up in the way of the Lord.

Nice one to the parent.

The car is in lagos already. It was sent in from Italy and the vendor says to me it has no issues though i'll be looking at it with my mechanic tomorrow.

This is an article written by Jason Leister. It is not my article.

Happy reading.

When you want to assume the position of ADVISOR in the minds of your prospects and clients, you actually have to act like an advisor. This means you do not blindly accept the premise they bring to you when they are looking to hire you.

Which premise is that?

The premise I'm talking about is the assumption that what they are asking you to do (the specific deliverable or service) will get them to where they want to go.

Now they might be right. They might know what they need. But they are not the expert in this area of things, you are. So that means you owe it to them to help them even figure out the right course of action to pursue.

Most service providers gloss over this. I think it's because of fear. I know that's why I did it for so long. When you're trained in the "system" as well as I was (I had no idea that getting Straight A's in school was simply proof of my willingness to submit to following orders), even the "confrontation" of asking your prospect why they think their intended course of action is the right one can make you nervous.

I felt that for a long time. It felt like confrontation. It made me nervous. It made me think they might leave. Eventually I realized that was a product of me "trying to get liked." This is a detrimental quality for an advisor.

The goal is not to get a friend. The goal is to help a client move forward.

So the next time a prospect comes to you and says, "We'd like you to do X, Y and Z... could you let us know how much that will be?" consider NOT answering with a simple Yes or No.

Instead, ask a question:

"What makes you think that's the right course of action here?"

This approach actually provides a MUCH higher level of service to your prospects and clients. And it keeps you out of the vendor box for good.

Onward,

Jason Leister

Business / My Labour Of Love To Prospective Business Owners by Jason2014(m): 2:30pm On Feb 05, 2015
How would you

rate a veteran entrepreneur...

...who rushed into business without a plan? An entrepreneur who squandered resources, sweat and tears without a blueprint?

And yet, you fight one of the toughest battles ever known to mankind. Every day. And it's not just your health that's at risk. But your nest egg. Your home. Your dignity. And those you love.

You fight a battle against inflation that erodes your purchasing power...against recession…against FIRS & LIRS - or worse still- the market share.

There isn't a veteran who fights a tougher battle. And through it all, you have to do your job, build your business, be parent, mate, lover, citizen---all at once.

If you're feeling stress, pressured, tension--is it any wonder?

But permit me to ask you a question, my dear business owner. You are the President of your life, business and those who look up to you for support and love:

Are you "winging it"? Are you “Improvising”? Hoping that hard work and luck will do the trick? No veteran, however two-fisted, would fight without a plan. So why fight without an accounting structure in place?

You should have an accounting structure in place. Not some mass-market paperback. Not some computer-generated, one-size-fits-all scheme. But a personal & customised plan designed for your business and best fits. With every number, every goal, every dream your very own.

You'll see just why a sound accounting system transforms the battle. Makes life less confusing. Less pressured. Less uncertain. Less frustrating.

Whatever lies ahead. Don't take the leap without first establishing your accounting needs and making appreciable effort to putting it in place.

All of it in straight talk, not the jargon of specialists. With all the facts and figures you need to make your business work.

I hope this helps.

Regards.

Business / The Value An Accountant Will Add To Your Business by Jason2014(m): 2:58pm On Feb 04, 2015
If you are a growing small business or just a start-up, you will undoubtly want to ensure that your business entity gets right-off the hook in 2014. For any business owner, of any size and any industry there are numerous issues to contend with to ensure that your operations remains successful on a daily basis but none more so than the management of the operating policy of your finances.

From bookkeeping to P.A.Y.E (Pay As You Earn), to VAT (Value Added Tax) & other tax exposures; as a business owner there are some financial issues to deal with and with many legally and statutorily imposed, it is therefore incumbent on the business owner to comply with; it is also important to ensure that management is done to the highest standard. The pressure facing business owners is constant which is why it is widely agreed that outsourcing your bookkeeping and accounting tasks to specialist accountants is the most educated and informed decision any business owner can make.

Those new to business bookkeeping & accounting dynamics however may be wondering in 2015, whether or not engaging an accountant is a worthy investment.

Below are my top tips that will highlight just how an accountant can make a great deal of difference to any business.

• Business Increase- The very aim of every business entity is to maintain an appreciable and measurable Growth but without the solid financial understanding, this can be a lot difficult to achieve. With the support of a seasoned accountant you can receive valued financial suggestions on money-saving and long-term growth. Knowing whether your business has the ability to move up is crucial and with the help of a professional small business accountant it couldn’t be easier.

• Helping With Tax Issues – From PAYE returns, VAT returns & other tax liabilities as well as bookkeeping, the accountant helps in dealing with punchy issues that arise from this and have many legal obligations that business owners must comply with. If you are new to business knowing just what you need to do, the right way to register your business, to fill in forms correctly and by the appropriate deadlines can be very overwhelming. The right accountant will deal with these issues on your behalf; ensure your business finances are up to scratch and all forms are correctly filed on time ensuring you avoid the penalties & fines that come with the default.

• Saving Money- An accountant isn’t just the guy (or girl) who deals with the taxes. A qualified and dedicated accountant will work to manage your daily cash flow, warn you of any unnoticed overspending and plan on reducing your overall tax bill. The right accountant can become a trusted advisor working to save your business money.

• Management Of Time- There are several sides to business bookkeeping & accounting that must be regularly dealt with and tasks like bookkeeping must be completed daily, ultimately taking up a great deal of your time. As the owner of a business it is easy to get lost in dealing with the finances however by outsourcing your financial requirements you in fact can free up your time to focus on daily management, sales and a range of things that matter even more.

Whether you are a new business or otherwise, give yourself a believing chance in the New Year by ensuring you have the trusted and solid backing of a financial expert. Investing in professional accountancy support could save your business greatly in the long run.

I hope this article helps.

Business / Why You Need An Accounting Software For Your Growing Business by Jason2014(m): 3:37pm On Feb 02, 2015
If you think that starting your own business is a stroll in the park, then you’re very wrong. A lot of functions come into play. Aside from developing good products and services, you still need to sell them to the market. One of the most essential factors in running a business is the ability to effectively manage your finances. The language of any business, whether big or small, is accounting.

The business space is always loaded with work pressure. Therefore, there is an unerring need for the effective and efficient handling of accounts and finances of the business. Every small business with strong prospect for growth need to be organized to achieve success and to do this the business owner should incorporate the appropriate accounting software, and the accounting package that beats all others hands-down and readily comes handy because of its user friendliness is Sage 50 formerly known as Peachtree Accounting package.

Business units usually set goals, be it short, medium or long term and to reach those goals, accounting information is required for planning, decision making and strategy formulation. If you want to be your business’ boss, you will need accounting software. Manually doing all the accounting work can lead to a lot of errors, pressure and frustration which can terribly affect any business to mention just a few of the challenges one will encounter doing it manually.

As the owner of a small and growing business, you have to know where funds come from and where it goes. If you decide to do accounting tasks manually, it will undoubtedly consume a great portion of your time and the intended purpose for which the accounting information will be required would have been defeated.

Here Are Some Of The Benefits You’ll Encounter Using An Accounting Software.
•You can easily access your business status at the click of a button and at a glance you’ll see the picture of your business – establishing debtors (receivables) position, bank balances without calling your banks’ accounts officer, know when payment is due to vendors, extract financial report of your choice and for relevant period .
• You can finish all the accounting tasks promptly. You will be able to run your small business without too much problems.
• You can be provided with correct reports as well as special tools to make accounting tasks a lot simpler. That way, you can manage all the financial data of the business effectively.
• In minutes, you can already manage the cash flow of the business.
• With the accounting software, it will now be possible to predict revenues, bills, and generating reports.

These are some of the benefits of using an accounting software. However, the use of accounting software cuts across all industry where there is an exchange of money – buying and selling taking place.

Don’t buy the first accounting software that you come across. You see, there are things to consider when selecting the proper accounting software for your business. You have to determine the software’s functionalities. It should be user-friendly and most especially, it should resemble the paper counterparts so that you can run the software smoothly. Once you’re familiar with the software’s layout, you can already explore its functionalities.

No doubt, there are a couple of accounting softwares sold off the shelf in the market. If you want to enjoy all the benefits, you must be able to choose the finest accounting software that is suited to your growing business and the one I suggest you buy is Sage 50 formerly known as Peachtree Accounting package.

In choosing an accounting software, you need to consider the number of your employees. You can find accounting software that is suited for small business with less than 25 employees. Some other software is suited for large businesses with bigger numbers of employees.

A software that is suited for small businesses helps the business owner analyze financial data, customize reports like transaction history, income statement (profit & loss), statement of financial position (balance sheet) check details, reconciliation details, and many more. By simply looking at the various reports, you can already determine your business status. Some software also offers built-in features like forecasting tools. These tools can be used to manage business risks and control cost of operation.

If you’re running a small business, it is time to buy accounting software. By doing so, you can secure your business’ future and you can be certain that all your accounting & financial tasks are handled effectively.

I hope this write up helps.

I was at the office of a client yesterday at the request of the MD who needs help with respect to her accounting system. I met with the GM who told me the challenges they're currently encountering and asked what we could do to salvage the situation?

While the meeting was going on, i asked for the accountant of the company to be present at the meeting to tell us the challenges he was encountering and what he's been able to accomplish thus far.

Currently, the company is using an accounting package bought from a software vendor in Nigeria who cared less about after sale service. As the meeting progressed, the accountant told me he's unable to manage the inventory of spare part items of the business and thus the monthly management accounts that is required for decision making and planning is not produced.

While having a meeting with the MD later in the day, she told me point blank that she was going to sack the accountant after we are done with the accounting system repairs. Now, the issue is the accountant happens to be my friend and his wife such a wonderful person with three kids who is currently managing a small business centre.

The question now is this, how do i tell this accountant friend of mine what is about to befall him?

I'll appreciate your useful counsel on this.

The Deeper Life weddings some castigate are not expected to follow the pattern of the world but be done strictly according to the will of God. Mind you, they are not following the crowd. So many people don't understand the position and the expectations of the Maker (God) of the marriage institution and yet they plunge into because they feel it is time for them to marry and so they do it. After taken this step, they regret ever after.

A good step in the right direction.

Few more banks to be acquired or better yet will merge come 2015. There's a lot of internal bleeding being experienced currently by the banks
and it is just right one begins to put his/her ears to the ground for inside scoop.

Was discussing with a banker friend of mine sometime back who comprehensively analysed what is going on in the banking sector and thus hinted at the likely things to happen next year 2015 ( won't disclose that now).

The bottomline is that few are going to give way and the "last men" will be standing. I'm hearing that Union Bank is to be taken over soon (i don't know how far it is true).

Banks that keep reporting interests on non-performing loans after 120days are signs of banks that might go under.
