Politics / APC Gov Backs Obi: Accepting Food From War-torn Ukraine Is Shameful by Jatii: 6:12am On Mar 08

Governor Bago, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said this on Tuesday at the Leadership Award ceremony held at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, where he and Obi were awardees.

The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, has backed the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 polls, Peter Obi's stance that it was shameful for Nigeria to receive food donations from war-torn Ukraine.

Governor Bago, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said this on Tuesday at the Leadership Award ceremony held at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, where he and Obi were awardees.

The governor, speaking in a video seen by SaharaReporters, said, “My boss, you are very right on what you’ve said. We have no reason to be poor. People may not like you, but they must hear you. What you say is the gospel truth."

Backing Obi’s stance, Governor Bago said that “It is time we tell ourselves the basic truth. We need to feed ourselves. It is a shame for people like Ukraine in war to be giving us food.”

The governor added that “Nigeria needs to be productive. You cannot be out of poverty unless you start to produce. I’m not an advocate of handouts and palliative. I don’t believe in it.”

SaharaReporters had reported that Obi lambasted the Nigerian government over the donation of 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat by war-torn Ukraine.

SaharaReporters on Friday reported that 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat were provided by the war-torn Ukrainian Government to support the World Food Programme (WFP) in providing emergency food assistance to 1.3 million crisis-affected people in North-East Nigeria.

It was learnt that the donation was part of the humanitarian “Grain from Ukraine” initiative launched by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Obi said that such a gesture from a country that rather needs humanitarian assistance as a result of the effect of the ongoing war with Russia, is disheartening and a national disgrace to Nigeria which is officially at peace.

While applauding Ukraine for the kind gesture, Obi said that a war-torn country donating food to Nigeria underscores vigorously the importance of sound political leadership as the first concrete requirement for any nation desiring to develop and enhance the standard of living of its citizenry, stressing that the national disgrace stems from years of leadership failure in Nigeria.

Reacting to Obi’s criticism, SaharaReporters on Tuesday had reported that the Nigerian government said that the fact that Nigeria accepted grains from Ukraine did not make the country a weak or failed state.

Politics / Re: President Tinubu's 2024 New Year Message To Nigerians (video) by Jatii: 8:11am On Jan 01
Most Nigerian presidents since 1999 have been major disappointments.

Regurgitating the same new year speeches every year without tangible progress.

Anyway, he's only been in office for less than a year. Still quite early to judge his performance.

Crime / Etche LGA Rivers State - Notorious Kidnapping Area by Jatii: 9:29pm On Jan 18, 2023
Sequel to the below thread the made frontpage about a lady that was kidnapped in Etche LGA in Rivers State:

https://www.nairaland.com/7529761/lady-shares-story-after-she

I saw a few comments from nairalanders who said Etche is a well known place for kidnapping, and so I decided to run a simple google search with the key words 'Etche Rivers kidnapping'.

Wow, the results I saw are mind blowing shocked shocked

Especially this lady's case that seemed to have happened in 2021:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCVobsWi668

She said the guys who kidnapped them took them to a place in the forest that was a market place for human parts, especially females who have never given birth.

The stories of kidnappings in Etche seem to be endless from the results on Google search. Infact, there appears to have been many threads created here on nairaland by people who have been victims.

It seems the Etche community and traditional rulers are well aware of this. My question is, how are people coping in that area? Given the place is known for such, what's security doing about it?

How big is the Etche forest that these things can continually go on even though quite a number of kidnappers have been arrested?

Politics / Re: Subsidy Debate by Jatii: 10:56pm On Jan 05, 2023
Wow,

see how Diezani Alison was smiling sheepishly in this video and nodding her head. The kind of smile where she'd be like "Yeah bro, i know subsidy is bad and that we are stealing money, but keep talking..."

Almost everything Sanusi said in this video is currently happening today.

- Low Dollar reserves meant to cushion or act as a shock absorber to the effects of an economic crisis are practically gone

- Low oil prices (though I've just checked and can see its about 70ish dollar per barrel)

- 1 Dollar = 700+ Naira (and back then in this video he was raising an alarm for when the Naira crosses 200 to 1 dollar)

- Inflation rate almost 22%

In Sanusi's own words, he said when all of the above happens and also when the government is unable to pay salary "then you will know what a crisis is". Given the 2023 budget, the government is going to borrow to fund most of their expenditure including salaries thereby increasing the debt profile to almost 80 trillion naira.

A lot of idiots will say "but the economic crisis is happening all over the world not just nigeria". Sanusi himself said it in this video that nigeria needs to prepare herself for when a time like this will come especially when oil price crashes.

Most of these problems started during GEJ's tenure because I remember how the federal and state governments kept dipping their hands into the Dollar reserves. This is despite a previous period of oil prices reaching 100 dollars per barrel and being unable to save a good proportion of that income to prepare for the current situation we are in.

Buhari's government came in and continued from where Jonathan stopped which is why our debt profile is now at a crazy level (and they still want to borrow more).

The 2 regimes of Buhari and GEJ though they performed in certain areas, but overall, both regimes have turned out to be serious failures.
Politics / Re: Fake Likes By Tinubu Bots by Jatii: 6:45pm On Oct 17, 2022
Seun:
Fellow Nairalanders,

I have noticed the fake likes by Tinubu Bots. Unfortunately, I'm still trying to find a permanent solution to this problem.

I have failed to deploy the solutions that I have because I feel they will either be circumvented pretty easily or cause too much collateral damage.

1. If you have ideas, please post them here.
2. Please use this page to report any post that has a suspiciously high number of likes.

I apologize for the delay in fixing this problem. We will fix this and any other problems as soon as possible.

Regards,
Seun.
