*Demands visa ban on Benue Chief Judge, registrar, others Members of the United World Congress of Diplomats (UN-WCD) have called on the Benue State Governor, Rev Fr. Hyacinth Alia, to act fast by appointing an acting Chief Judge for the state. The diplomats also called for urgent total reform of the Nigerian judicial system to build the confidence of Nigerians. The group, however, demanded a visa ban on the Benue State Chief Judge, the Registrar of the court, the current Senate Minority Leader and all those who supported the actions of the Chief Judge publicly in the ongoing judicial crisis in the state. Addressing a new conference Thursday in Abuja, a Professor of Politics & International Studies, Amb. Dr. Tunji John Asaolu, who led the group, specifically called on the Benue State governor, Rev Fr. Hyacinth Alia to speedily appoint an acting Chief Judge to prevent a vacuum in the judiciary and uphold the uninterrupted delivery of justice to the citizens of Benue State. According to Asaolu, the call for judiciary reform was necessitated by alleged undue inference of judicial workers in Rivers, Osun, Benue states on political issues where conflicting orders were issued by judges just to frustrate democracy. He refered to Osun State where there was a conflicting State High Court order and Appeal Court Judgment over the dissolution of Local Government Council Chairmen and their reinstatement and a fresh election by the state electoral empire. Dr. Asaolu said the most worrisome of all is the alleged interference by the Benue State Chief Judge, Maurice Ikpambese who allegedly tried to undermine justice by granting waver to petitioners of local government election tribunal not to pay security deposit as stipulated by law. UN-WCD described the conduct as against the core objectives of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) which are to: "Promote adherence, by each State Party, to the universal values and principles of democracy and respect for human rights; and also the principle of the rule of law premised upon the respect for, and the supremacy of the Constitution and constitutional order in the political arrangements of the State Parties." The diplomats called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the National Judicial Council (NJC) to exercise caution and restraint in passing judgment on the removal of Justice Maurice Ikpambese untill a thorough investigation is conducted. "We emphasize the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for all public officials, including judges. Any acts of misconduct or abuse of power must be met with swift and decisive action to maintain public trust and confidence in the judiciary," they noted. "We can assure you that we will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for ethical governance practices in Nigeria and beyond. "We have it in good authority that the National Judicial Council is yet to even constitute investigative panel to unravel the allegations against the Chief Judge, a resolution passed by the Benue State Legislative Arm of Government which recommended outright removal of the Chief Judge from office. "The Benue State Chief Judge, the Registrar of the court, the current Senate Minority Leader, and all those who supported the actions of the Chief Judge publicly should be sanctioned and have their existing visas canceled and visa ban issued against them just as we advocated in the case of Rivers State and INEC officials who purposely sabotaged democratic principles during elections. "We believe by now that the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria who is a proactive officer should have set up a probe panel to immediately investigate the chief Judge even if the NJC is not willing to investigate the previous petitions against the CJ, the recent one passed by the State House of Assembly and forwarded by the Benue State Government to the NJC should have been under investigation by now." They thereby urged the NJC and the NBA to act in accordance with the truth and uphold the rule of law by condemning any illegal actions committed by any Chief Judge, rather than endorsing or supporting any questionable conduct. They further called on the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi to initiate an independent panel to thoroughly investigate the allegations of financial irregularities and breaches of ethical standards attributed to Chief Judge Ikpambese of Benue State since it is essential to ensure that due process is followed and that justice is served in the interest of public trust and accountability.

*Coalition says Benue judiciary collapsed under Justice Ikpambese A coalition of civil society organizations under the platform of Coalition for Good Governance and Transparency in Nigeria, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate allegations against the embattled Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpambese. The transparency group also declared that currently, Benue judiciary has collapsed under Justice Ikpambese. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, the group led by Comrade Okpanachi Jacob, accused Justice Ikpambese of bias, political interference and misconduct, warning that failure to act could lead to mass protests aimed at restoring integrity to the judiciary. Their demand follows a resolution by the Benue State House of Assembly last week, recommending the Chief Judge’s removal after a petition from Governor Hyacinth Alia, citing alleged infractions deemed incompatible with his judicial office. The group further called on the Attorney General of the Federation to intervene in the ongoing judicial crisis in Benue State, stressing the urgency of upholding due process and ensuring accountability within the judiciary. The group, led by Comrade Okpanachi Jacob further issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate and take action against the embattled Chief Judge, warning that failure to act could lead to mass protests aimed at restoring integrity to the judiciary. Full text of his speech below: “Recent events involving the Benue state Judiciary is an example worthy of mention. The Benue State House of Assembly passed a resolution and recommended the removal of the Chief Judge of Benue State, Honorable Maurice Ikpambese based on petitions recieved on his alleged misconduct, abuse of office among other infractions. The House relied on section 292 subsection (3) of the 1999 constitution as amended which states that, the Chief Judge of a State can be removed from office if it is backed by two third majority of the State House of Assembly. “The National Judicial Council (NJC) is a body saddled with the responsibility to discipline judicial officers. “Let it be on record that, there is no part of the constitution that empowers the NJC to remove a chief judge from office but to discipline and recommend same to the Governor of a State who has the powers to remove a chief judge if found wanting. “In the case of Benue State, we have investigated the entire process and discovered that, the NJC is in receipt of several petitions against Justice Maurice Ikpambese but has deliberately refused to investigate him. Since 2010, there have been petitions against him even before he became the Chief Judge of Benue State. “Infact, for the NJC's statement that it received a petition against Justice Maurice Ikpambese just on Monday 19th February 2025 is misleading. Our findings show that the 19th February petition was the latest in recent time. “Outside this petition, there are other petitions, including the one acknowledged by the NJC itself on the 2nd of December, 2024, which is yet to be investigated even now. “Most worrisome, is the political waver granted by the embattled Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Ikpambese to petitioners of the local government election petition tribunal which is a clear case of bias, favoritism, compromise and political interest. It is unholy for a Chief Judge of a state who set up the election petition tribunal panel and also constituted the appeal panel to have shown such bias, which is already a miscarriage of justice. “It is obvious that under Justice Ikpambese, the judiciary is dead in Benue State. “We wish to state in a clear term that, it is within our constitutional rights to insist that the NJC, NBA and other relevant bodies to do the needful by allowing justice to prevail but under Ikpambese as the Chief Judge, Benue Judiciary has collapsed. “We strongly call on the Benue State Governor and the State House of Assembly not succumb to the antics of the political enemies within and outside Benue State who are now using some officials to distract this current purposeful and working government in the State. “While we give the NJC 48 hours ultimatum to constitute panel, investigate, and prosecute Justice Ikpambese for his wrongful act of compromise, sabotage and bias, we recommend the Governor of Benue State Rev Fr Hyacinth Iormen Alia to immediately swear in the next judge in line as the Acting Chief Judge of State. “In an ideal society, Justice Ikpambese should have stepped outside to pave way for proper investigation but instead, he was quoted on Sunday 23rd February 2025 during a church program that, he personally selected Judges that would be too difficult for the governor to access. “This is a clear testimony that he has compromised every step of the judiciary, including the local government election petition tribunal and its judgment. The people no longer trust Ikpambese to preside over the affairs of the judiciary as he has permitted and waved the security deposit as required by law in favor of a section of the political class. “We call on the Attorney General of the Federation to immediately intervene and ensure the constitutional provision of the rights and privileges of the Benue State House of Assembly members as well, the constitutional powers of the Executive Governor who has the powers to remove a Chief Judge in line with section 292 of the 1999 constitution as amended should be exercised. “We make bold to say that, failure of the NJC and the Attorney General of the Federation to read the riot act to Justice Ikpambese and advise he step outside, we shall occupy the NJC premises in a mass protest to press home our demand, we will do this to save democracy and restore order in Benue State. We will do everything possible to ensure that a peaceful Benue State is not thrown into political crisis and the good governance people are now enjoying in the state is not corrupted by some individuals who are suspected to be agents of opposition political parties in Benue State.”

AYCF in a statement by its President General Yerima Shettima, averred that since the forcible seizure on Monday, February 17, 2025, of the Afenifere Youth President, he has remained in captivity since then, a situation he described as worrisome. According to Shettima, more worrisome is.the.fact that the kidnappers are demanding an exorbitant ransom of ₦100 million, a situation he said, is compounded by the kidnappers' ultimatum, threatening to take his life if their demands are not met. "The recent escalation in the kidnappers’ demands, which now includes the provision of two Keke NAPEP vehicles, alongside a menacing deadline set for Tuesday, at 3pm, underscores the urgent need for immediate action. "The threat to execute Prince Ojajuni if these demands are not met is not just a reflection of the lawlessness that has gripped our nation, but also a stark reminder of the fragility of life in the face of greed and desperation," the statement said. He posited that, "Prince Ojajuni is not merely a name, but a beacon of hope and a symbol of the aspirations of our youth," adding that, "his unwavering commitment to championing the cause of the Yoruba people has resonated deeply within our communities. "His abduction represents not only a personal tragedy for his family and friends but also a grievous affront to the collective conscience of our race and the nation as a whole. It is a stark reminder of the challenges our society faces in safeguarding the lives and futures of our youth. "The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, representing the interests and voices of the northern youth, unequivocally condemns this act of violence and lawlessness. We recognize that the abduction of Prince Ojajuni is part of a larger crisis that has plagued our nation, where kidnappings for ransom have become an all-too-common occurrence. "This trend is not merely a regional issue; it is a national emergency that demands the immediate and concerted efforts of all levels of government. "In light of this dire situation, we call upon the Federal Government and all relevant state authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safe release of Prince Eniola Joseph Ojajuni". The Arewa youth leader said, it is imperative that security agencies are mobilized to locate and rescue Prince Ojajuni without delay., stressing that the Federal Government must ensure that law enforcement are adequately equipped and empowered to address the rising tide of kidnapping and violence in our society. He further urged the Federal Government to collaborate with state governments, local communities, and civil society organizations to create a robust framework for combating kidnapping and improving the overall security situation in the country. "Engaging with community leaders, youth organizations, and other stakeholders is essential to understanding the root causes of this crisis. A dialogue that prioritizes the safety and aspirations of our youth will foster a more secure environment for all. "The government must launch public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about safety measures and encourage community vigilance. Empowering citizens with knowledge is a crucial step in combating the menace of kidnapping. "We call for the immediate review and strengthening of existing laws regarding kidnapping and ransom. The legal framework must reflect the seriousness of these crimes and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable". In the present situation, Shettima said, the AYCF stands in solidarity with the Afenifere Youth Council and all those advocating for the safe return of Prince Ojajuni while imploring all Nigerians to unite in this critical moment, transcending ethnic and regional divides to demand justice and security for our people. He reiterated the urgent plea for the safe release of Prince Ojajuni, "Let us not allow fear and despair to dictate our future; instead, let us rise together as a nation, resolute in our commitment to justice, safety, and the well-being of our youth. Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Tuesday, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to call the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, ex-Governor Gboyega Oyetola and his All Progressives Congress (APC) thugs to order in Osun State. Frank in a statement in Abuja, said the call has become necessary to restore peace in Osun State, following clashes between APC and PDP faithful in the state over control of local government areas in which many lives have reportedly been lost. Violence erupted on Monday in Osun State as the battle for the control of the local government secretariats between the PDP and the APC turned bloody. A Court of Appeal judgment was interpreted differently by the APC and the PDP. Adeleke and Oyetola have strongly disagreed over the alleged reinstatement verdict of the Court of Appeal. Governor Adeleke had insisted that the sacked council chairmen cannot return to office, citing security reasons. However, Oyetola said the Appeal Court judgment would be implemented through the instruments of law. He added that the council executives should resume on Monday. Frank said: “Intelligence at our disposal has revealed that the present strategy and plan by Oyetola is to make the state ungovernable for Governor Ademola Adeleke, so they can hide under the guise of crisis in the state to declare a state of emergency in Osun State. He lamented that following the crises orchestrated by Oyetola and his APC thugs, the National Secretary of the APC, Dr Ajibola Basiru, who is from Osun State, had on live television on Monday evening urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state to curtail further violence. He quoted Basiru to have said that: “I will suggest that perhaps it will be necessary for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency. It has gotten to that stage where hapless people coming from farms are attacked by uncontrollable PDP thugs.” Frank said: “Their major target is to declare a state of emergency because they know that if the elections are allowed to hold today, Governor Adeleke will still win. “So they want to abort his second term through crisis and violence to pave the way for the declaration of a state of emergency. “The President is hereby called upon to break his silence in spite of the fact that Osun is his State of Origin and home town but the state is being ruled by the PDP and Governor Adedeké is the people's choice. “Therefore, we are using this medium to let him know that if the present crisis is allowed to degenerate beyond what has already happened, both Oyetola and himself, as the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would be held responsible. “Presently, Oyetola is using Federal Might to engineer evil and anarchy in Osun State and this nonsense must stop with all urgency.” Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, called on all well-meaning Nigerians to speak up to save the nation’s democracy “because what is happening in Osun state is sheer impunity, dictatorship and arrogance on the part of the APC that is trying to capture every part of the country at all cost - not through the ballot but through impunity and criminality. “We call on the people of Osun to stand strongly with Governor Adeleke in the face of this aggression being fueled by Oyetola and the APC. “They must not be intimidated but resist the rascality of federal might that the ex-Governor and his party are using the way they have always done. “Come to think of it, Oyetola was governor for four years without any developmental projects to show for it but Adeleke has been there in the last two years and has done so much which has profoundly impacted the lives of the people. “Despite the intimidation we encourage the people of Osun State to stand firm in support for Adeleke, to prevent any form of distraction in rendering good governance in the state as part of his electioneering promises. “They must equally rise up against every plot to declare a state of emergency in the state courtesy of Oyetola and APC through which they intend to destabilize the Adeleke’s administration take over the state by all means because they know that Oyetola or any other APC candidate cannot win an election in the state to unseat Adeleke. “So, that's why Oyetola and APC are very desperate to take the state by force because they believe that that is the President's home town.”

Sen Abubakar Girei has in a strong worded rebuttal flayed former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal saying that he should rather speak for himself as he has no authority to speak on behalf of the North. Girei who was responding to a statement credited to Babachir in which he said the North will not support the president's return bid noted that the North will rally behind the president and ensure he gets a landslide victory. The senator who described Lawal as a political featherweight noted that having lost all iota of relevance, the former SGF has become a rabble rouser, and an unapologetic bigot who has taken a new vocation as a social media gadfly. Girei noted that unlike the former president Muhammadu Buhari who give political lightweights superior political appointments only to stab him and his people in the back, Tinubu who is an astute administrator could not touch Babachir with a 100 mile pole. He added that the victory of Tinubu come 2027 is a settled issue as the North will rally behind him adding that the president's victory will be total and comprehensive. He noted that president Tinubu has over two years to consolidate what he started, urging Lawal to in the interest of peace and progress allow Mr President to concentrate on his job of cleaning the augean stable. "I wish to tell my brother that the campaign period was over a long time. We are in another phase of governance. Tinubu has won the 2023 presidential election. So let him serve his mandate and stop causing distraction. "Instead of making such statements, I implore Mr. David Lawal to start preparing for campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election where he and his political party can contest against the president. But one thing I want to say here is Lawal should rather speak for himself and not the North as the region has a substantive platform to articulate its viewpoints," he said. Girei added that president Tinubu was elected to serve a four year term after which he can seek reelection adding that the president is yet to reach the two year mark. He noted that two years in a democratic setting is a long time for the president to consolidate his programs after which Nigerians can make their decisions. "In democracy, two years is a long time to consolidate on the gains so far made. It is glaring that despite all odds, the president has degraded insecurity with the active support of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to a significant level. The petroleum sector is stabilizing and the naira is gaining momentum having gained considerable traction in recent times "In addition, food inflation is drastically going down. As a result of the decimation of insecurity, farmers are going back to their farms and the government is working round the clock to subsidize cost of farm implements and materials. "Students loan and other social safety nets have started gaining ground. While I understand my brother's frustrations, I want to also advise that let us wait for campaign period by which time the success of the administration's would become glaring," he added.

The Kaduna Advocate of Good Governance has reaffirmed its strong support for Governor Uba Sani while criticizing former Governor Nasir el-Rufai over his recent social media comments. The group dismissed claims that Governor Sani's support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration was sycophantic, arguing instead that it was a strategic move for Kaduna State’s benefit. Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Sunday, the group’s Coordinator, Aliyu Ibrahim, called on anti-corruption agencies to investigate the financial management of Kaduna State under El-Rufai’s administration. He emphasized that such a probe would promote transparency and accountability in governance. "If El-Rufai claims to be a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but feels uncomfortable with Governor Uba Sani’s alignment with the Tinubu administration, perhaps he should clarify his political position instead of questioning the governor’s leadership," Ibrahim stated. The group praised Governor Sani for securing a N150 billion federal reimbursement for Kaduna State, describing it as a major achievement that underscores his leadership and negotiation skills. "Governor Uba Sani deserves to be celebrated, not criticized. This reimbursement is a major victory for Kaduna State and reflects his commitment to the welfare of the people," Ibrahim added. The statement comes in response to remarks made by El-Rufai on social media platform X, where he appeared to challenge Governor Sani’s political stance. The group expressed concern over what it described as an attempt by El-Rufai to exert undue influence over his successor. "When a former governor who has completed his tenure tries to maintain a grip on his successor’s administration, it raises serious concerns about democratic principles," Ibrahim noted.

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their firm stance on accountability in the dismissal of three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Adamawa, Sokoto, and Abia states. AYCF in a statement issued by its President General, Yerima Shettima said, it believes that such decision is a bold step towards restoring public trust in Nigeria's electoral process and promoting ethical conduct among election officials. The forum also applauded President Tinubu's request to the Senate to terminate the appointments of the suspended RECs, as it aligns with constitutional oversight provisions and demonstrates a commitment to upholding electoral integrity. Furthermore, the AYCF said, it acknowledges INEC's efforts in upholding electoral integrity, citing the recent conviction of Professor Ignatius Uduk in Akwa Ibom State for electoral fraud during the 2019 elections as a significant victory against election malpractice. Shettima said, the successful prosecution sets an important precedent and sends a strong message to those who seek to compromise the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process, adding that by holding individuals accountable for their actions, the confidence in the electoral system will be restored, and citizens can have faith in the fairness and transparency of future elections. AYCF also urged other stakeholders, such as the Directorate of State Security (DSS), the Police, other security agencies, and political parties, to follow suit by enforcing internal disciplinary measures against individuals who engage in misconduct during elections. "This call for accountability extends beyond electoral officials and emphasizes the importance of all parties involved in the electoral process upholding ethical standards and conducting themselves with integrity. By working together to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections in Nigeria, stakeholders can contribute to the establishment of a stronger democracy for the nation as a whole. "The AYCF also acknowledges the complexity of disciplinary processes within INEC and expresses appreciation for the time it took for the suspended RECs to be dismissed. We recognize that adherence to due process is essential in maintaining the credibility of the electoral system and ensuring that decisions are made fairly and transparently. "By taking time to investigate and follow proper procedures, INEC demonstrates a commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity in its operations, which is crucial for building public trust in the electoral process". Shettima said, the AYCF stands in solidarity with INEC and President Tinubu in their efforts to promote accountability and transparency in Nigeria's electoral process while calling on all Nigerians to support such initiatives and work towards building a stronger democracy for the nation. "By holding individuals accountable for their actions, enforcing ethical standards, and upholding the principles of transparency and integrity, stakeholders can contribute to the establishment of a fair and inclusive electoral system that serves the interests of all citizens" Shettima stressed. 1 Like

The Arewa Coalition for Justice and Good Governance (ACJGG) has strongly defended the appointment of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), commending President Bola Tinubu’s decision and dismissing criticisms from former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, and political activist Naja’atu Muhammad. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the coalition’s convener, Dr. Mohammed Jabir Adamu, described Ribadu’s appointment as a "perfect alignment of preparation meeting opportunity," citing his extensive experience in security and public service. “President Tinubu’s choice of Ribadu as NSA reflects his expertise, competence, and unadulterated commitment to Nigeria’s progress,” Adamu stated. “It also underscores the President’s emphasis on professional excellence and expertise in governance.” The ACJGG accused Naja’atu Muhammad of engaging in what it described as "baseless social media allegations" rather than constructive dialogue on national security. The group argued that such criticisms were unproductive and urged her to focus her energy on meaningful contributions to national discourse. “We find it disappointing that instead of engaging in a meaningful conversation on security matters, Naja’atu Muhammad has resorted to spreading unfounded claims. No amount of malicious social media campaigns will deter Ribadu from executing his mandate,” Adamu said. The coalition also dismissed claims that Ribadu lacked Tinubu’s trust, recalling that the former anti-corruption chief had contested the 2011 presidential election under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), a party where Tinubu was a key figure. "The trust and loyalty between them were not built today," Adamu asserted, adding that any past disagreements had likely been resolved long before Ribadu’s appointment. Beyond defending Ribadu, the ACJGG insisted on a legal demand for Naja’atu Muhammad to retract her statements and issue a public apology. According to the group, protecting the integrity of the Office of the National Security Adviser is paramount. “This office is too critical to our national security to be subjected to baseless attacks and political mudslinging,” Adamu stated.

*Says Both Institutions Mean Well for the Masses The Centre for Good Governance (CGG) has commended the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for their recent meeting to discuss the 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs. The meeting, which was led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has resulted in the suspension of the NLC's proposed protest, initially scheduled for today, February 4, 2025. The NLC had rejected the 50% tariff hike, citing its potential to exacerbate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, who are already struggling with a minimum wage of only ₦70,000. However, following the meeting, the NLC has agreed to wait for the outcome of a 10-man committee review before determining their next course of action. This committee, comprising five members from the Federal Government and five from the NLC, will provide a platform for thorough examination and analysis of the tariff increase. In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr Martins Tayo, the Centre said the decision to establish this committee demonstrates a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue and find a solution that benefits all stakeholders. The Centre applauded the NLC and NCC leadership for their commitment to maintaining industrial harmony and protecting the interests of Nigerians. Tayo noted that both institutions have proven to be pro-masses and people-centric by engaging in constructive dialogue. He added: "We appreciate the NLC's willingness to wait for the outcome of the committee's review before determining their next course of action. This decision demonstrates the union's commitment to finding a mutually beneficial solution and its willingness to engage in constructive dialogue. "As an organisation that promotes good governance, we recognise the importance of collaboration and dialogue in addressing the challenges faced by our nation. "We believe that both the NLC and NCC have demonstrated a genuine commitment to the welfare of Nigerians and are working towards a mutually beneficial solution. The Coalition of Human Rights Monitoring Groups (CHRMG) has condemned the Nigeria Labour Congress's (NLC) planned protest against the 50% telecom tariff increase, describing it as "misguided and not in the public interest." The CSOs said the tariff hike, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), is a necessary measure to prevent the telecom sector from collapsing. According to Dr. Gabriel Agibi, President of the group, with the current inflation rate at 34.8%, a nearly 300% increase from 8.5% in 2013, the tariff adjustment is essential to reflect economic realities. Agibi said the NCC's decision was made in good faith, taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability. He added that the tariff hike is also crucial in ensuring that Nigeria's telecom sector remains competitive with international standards. "The last telecom tariff increase was in 2013 when Nigeria's inflation rate was 8.5%. However, with the current inflation rate at 34.8%, a nearly 300% increase, the tariff adjustment is essential to reflect economic realities," Agabi said. "The NCC's decision was made in good faith, taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability. The increase will remain within the tariff bands stipulated in the 2013 NCC Cost Study, ensuring that it does not unduly burden consumers. "The tariff hike is also crucial in ensuring that Nigeria's telecom sector remains competitive with international standards. Compared to other countries, Nigeria's telecom tariffs are relatively low. "For instance, in South Africa, the average cost of 1GB of data is around ₦1,200, while in Ghana, it is around ₦1,500. In Nigeria, the average cost of 1GB of data is around ₦500. The tariff hike will help to bridge this gap and ensure that telecom operators can invest in infrastructure and provide quality services to consumers. "The tariff hike is also essential for the Nigerian government's digital economy agenda, which aims to leverage technology to drive economic growth and development. "With increased revenue from tariffs, telecom operators will be able to invest in expanding their networks, improving internet speeds, and developing new digital services, ultimately supporting the government's efforts to create a more digital and connected society." The Coalition commended President Tinubu's administration for its efforts to reform the telecom sector, ensuring its sustainability and growth. Agabi said the President's commitment to creating a conducive business environment is laudable, and the coalition believes that this tariff adjustment is a step in the right direction. However, the Coalition of Human Rights Monitoring Groups urged the NLC to reconsider its stance and engage in constructive dialogue with the NCC and other stakeholders. "We warn the NLC that its actions may have unintended consequences, including harming the very people it claims to represent," Dr. Agibi said. "We urge the NLC to prioritize the interests of Nigerian workers and citizens by supporting policies that promote economic growth and development." The coalition urged Nigerians to look beyond the short-term pains of the tariff hike and consider the long-term benefits it will bring to the telecom sector and the economy as a whole. According to Agabi, a stronger and more sustainable telecom sector will create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for Nigerians.

*Suggests arrest of perpetrators inciting violence, regardless of political standing The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has expressed its full support for the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, in his recent warning against the use of inflammatory rhetoric, particularly when directed at prominent figures such as Rotimi Amaechi. The AYCF believes that Matawalle's actions signify a crucial step towards holding individuals accountable for their actions and maintaining the rule of law in the nation. AYCF In a statement by its President General, Yerima Shettima averred that, in a time where political tensions are high and divisive rhetoric is prevalent, it is essential for leaders like Minister Matawalle to speak out against language that seeks to incite violence or destabilize the country. "By condemning inflammatory rhetoric, Matawalle is sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and that those who engage in it will face consequences," the statement said. The AYCF commended Minister Matawalle for his bold stance and believes that his actions are in the best interest of the nation. "It is imperative that leaders at all levels of government take a firm stand against any form of speech that could lead to violence or civil unrest. By upholding the rule of law and holding individuals accountable for their actions, we can work towards a more peaceful and united Nigeria. "Nigeria, a nation of diverse ethnicities and political viewpoints, requires a delicate balance to maintain peace and stability. Recent pronouncements by Amaechi and other certain political figures have threatened this equilibrium, prompting concerns about incitement and the potential for widespread unrest. "While healthy political discourse and opposition are essential for a thriving democracy, deliberate incitement to violence crosses an unacceptable line. The comments attributed to Rotimi Amaechi, intended to incite violence or unrest, are a serious threat to national security. "Such actions undermine the democratic process, sow seeds of discord among citizens, and can lead to catastrophic consequences, including loss of life and property. Nigeria’s government, in its responsibility to protect its citizens, must not tolerate such deliberate attempts to incite chaos from any individual or group, irrespective of their political standing. "The law must be applied equally to all. Minister Matawalle's bold stance deserves commendation. His decision to publicly address the issue and call out individuals perceived to be inciting violence is a necessary and courageous act. It demonstrates a commitment to maintaining peace and upholding the principles of justice. "By directly challenging those who might feel above the law, Matawalle sets a powerful precedent. His actions serve as a stark reminder that no one is exempt from accountability, regardless of their past political positions or influence. It sends a strong message that the government will not stand idly by while individuals deliberately fan the flames of discord," the statement said. Shettima said, such firm stance is crucial, not only for maintaining immediate peace, but also for setting a standard of responsible political conduct. "Nigeria's strength lies in its unity and diversity. This unity is threatened when individuals prioritize personal gain or political ambition over the well-being of the nation. "The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum unequivocally supports Minister Matawalle's call for calm and his firm stance against political incitement. We believe that his actions are not only necessary but also crucial for safeguarding the peace and stability of Nigeria". Shettima said. He emphasised that the government must show its commitment to upholding the rule of law by addressing any instance of incitement to violence, regardless of the perpetrator's political standing. "We urge all political actors to engage in responsible and peaceful discourse, prioritize national unity, and work together to build a better future for all Nigerians. The nation’s future hinges on our collective responsibility to maintain peace and uphold the principles of justice and fairness".

*Backs Matawalle Stance The Apex Igbo Sociocultural Organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has responded to what it termed alarming and incendiary remarks recently made by Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, a former Governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transport against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to Ohanaeze in a statement issued by the Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, "in a discourse at an opposition leaders’ conference in Abuja, Amaechi’s outrageous call for Nigerians to resort to “brutal force” in an attempt to snatch power from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by 2027 starkly contravene the principles of civility, democracy, and peace that we hold dear. "Amaechi's equally disconcerting assertion that politicians must be willing to “steal, maim, and kill” to retain power not only diminishes the dignity of our political discourse but also poses a dire threat to the very fabric of our society". Ohanaeze averred that, " such insidious rhetoric serves to excite unrest and mobilize the youth towards violent actions that could plunge our beloved nation into chaos", adding that, " It is an affront to the intelligence, integrity, and sensibilities of all Nigerians, and threatens to incite an uncontrollable wave of violence that could engulf our nation. "In light of this egregious misconduct, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, while often inclined to overlook baseless declarations, understands that the gravity of Amaechi's statements warrants a definitive and public denunciation, especially as he identifies as an Igbo man from the Ikwerre-speaking area of Rivers State. "Given his past candidacy against President Tinubu in the 2023 APC primaries—an electoral contest in which he was decisively bested—it is paramount that we as Igbo leaders unequivocally distance ourselves from incendiary and divisive rhetoric that could mistakenly suggest support from Ndigbo for such inflammatory sentiments. "We condemn in the strongest possible terms the reckless and incendiary comments made by Chibuike Amaechi against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is essential to declare firmly that the Ndigbo will never endorse any political conspiracy aimed at undermining the legitimacy of an elected President. "Furthermore, we unequivocally lend our support to the position articulated by the Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawelle. We echo his urgent call for Mr. Amaechi to retract his divisive statements and cease from further inciting the populace, lest he face the inevitable repercussions of his actions. No individual, regardless of their status or former office, is above the rule of law in our nation". Isiguzoro in the statement, also posted that it is abundantly clear that the coalition of opposition political elites currently lacks the cohesion and strength required to mount an effective challenge against President Tinubu in 2027. "In this context, Ohanaeze Ndigbo unequivocally announces its intent to mobilize and galvanize the Igbo population residing in the nineteen Northern States to stand firmly alongside Dr. Bello Matawelle. Together, we shall ensure that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not only maintains his office but secures a resounding victory in the forthcoming elections. "To the opposition politicians who delight in fantasies of seizing power through chaos, let it be known that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Defence, must remain vigilant against any attempts to incite disorder". The Igbo apex group called for robust measures to monitor and thwart any individual or group attempting to weaponize discontent and mobilize violence among our youth and that those found guilty of such treasonous actions must face severe penalties, irrespective of their political connections or influence. "Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterates its unwavering allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We clearly state that there shall be no support from the Igbo for any coalition of opposition leaders plotting against the sitting President. Our resolve is steadfast, as we remain committed to fostering peace, stability, and fruitful governance in Nigeria. Let it be said that the aspirations of the Igbo people align with a future predicated upon legitimate leadership, respect for democratic processes, and a shared vision for a prosperous Nigeria" the statement added. 1 Like 1 Share

By; MUSTAPHA ATIKU RIBADU (Abusalwa) For self serving reasons, some people will at all costs twist innocuous narratives or give wrong connotations to even friendly statements with the aim of causing dis-affection between individuals. Although I'm neither bothered nor disturbed with such agents of doom, it is pertinent to restate that my article entitled Fufore Emirate: Prof Alkasum Abba's selective amnesia was not meant to denigrate his person, achievements or whatever he stands for but an attempt to bring another dimension into the current discourse in respect of the creation of Fufore emirate. The phrase selective amnesia has been used literary by skillful writers to describe someone who engaged in double standards in a subtle language, especially if the writer doesn't want to be combative or confrontational. But against all odds, these agent provocateurs who are fixated with my stand on Fufore Emirate, must change the context to incite bad blood. Selective amnesia simply means the inability of someone to recall certain aspects of an event. Having made this clarification, I'll go ahead with today's discourse. I want to restate in unambiguous language that I'm a bonafide member of Fombina Emirate, a proud one for that matter. This was my position when debates around the subject started sequel to the creation of Fufore Emirate by governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and is still my standpoint which I had made clearly in my previous articles on the subject. To this effect, I want to state that my unalloyed allegiance rests with the Lamido Adamawa, Muhammad Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha and anyone who inherits the throne forever. But let me also put a caveat here, that my allegiance and respect for the Adamawa emirate will not make me to sever relations with any other emirate or kingdom. I want to also say with deep sense of responsibility that my respect and allegiance to the Adamawa Emirate is profound based on the fact that it did not occur on the accident of my existence within the geographic space called Adamawa emirate but on a deeper and closer ties with the emirate, as my foster mother, is a direct descendant of Modibbo Adama, and I am closer to her than even my biological mother. Let me also state here that in my family, "Ribadu family" there are many descendants of Modibbo Adama who by virtue of blood relationship are eligible to occupy the coveted stool of Lamido Adamawa. One of them is my nephew. I also want to acknowledge that people who are opposed to the creation of Fufore Emirate have the right to legally oppose it as it remains within the confines of their constitutional rights to challenge any government policy that did not sit with them. By going to court, not the other way round, they have displayed an unwavering respect for constitutionality and the rule of law. Based on the forgoing, I want to emphasize that I enjoyed very convivial relationship with the descendants of Modibbo Adama as I have remained very close to them while my age long rapport with the family has remained intact contrary to the impression being created by fifth columnists that relationship between me and them has severed irretrievably. I always pray that may Allah never bring any conflict between myself and the revered Modibbo Adama family till I die. I want to use this auspicious medium to state that my respect for Modibbo Adama family, starting from Lamido Adamawa up the last child in the family is unalloyed, I also want to point to the folly of those projecting that you can't enjoy cordial relationship with other emirates as a consequence of your allegiance to one emirate. That position is the height of self deception, incivility and knowledge bankruptcy. Lastly I want to restate my resolve to do anything for Fufore Emirate within my capacity without the fear of any mortal potentate likewise the other Emirates/Chiefdoms. But before I conclude I want to refresh our memories to a series of malicious articles written by Prof. Alkasum Abba against the traditional institution in Analyst, a publication he authored. One of such very caustic articles was the one he entitled "leaders or looters: Traditional rulers in Nigeria from page 7-13, volume 2 No 5 published in 1987. Is it not ironic that a person who maligned this revered institution is now championing its cause? Your guess is as good as mine. I come in peace.
