Nairaland / General / Water: Kaduna Govt Establishes Court To Prosecute Defaulting Service Providers by Jatuski: 7:52am On Dec 17, 2024 |
A special Court has been attached to the Kaduna State Water Services Regulatory Commission (KADWREC) by the Chief Judge of the State for service providers who may likely violate regulations. This was disclosed by the Executive Chairman of KADWREC, Mr Dogara Bashir, at a one-day workshop organised for media practitioners on regulation of ‘Water, Sanitation and Hygiene’ (WASH) activities held in Kaduna on Monday. The chairman further said that amongst the commission’s objectives include ensuring security, reliability and quality of service in the production and delivery of water to the consumers as well as making regulations to control the sinking of boreholes. Others according to him, include; maximising access to water services by promoting and facilitating consumer connections to distribution systems in urban and rural areas. According to Bashir, they also include ensuring that regulatory decision-making has regards to all the relevant health, safety, environmental and social legislation applying to the water sector. Bashir further said that the commission collaborates with the relevant state and federal agencies on water policies. He said in view of the importance to sensitize the public, KADWREC is partnering media practitioners towards revamping water services in the state. Bashir said the commission is aware of the importance of the role media practitioners play in the society. He explained that the workshop is to provide an avenue to liaise with journalists as important stakeholders on water supply and sanitation services in the state. Bashir said: “As media practitioners, we believe you are a gateway to the citizens so, the workshop would acquaint you with some of the regulations already in place so that you can in turn transmit it to the public “The state of water services in Kaduna State is in dire need of attention and the State Water Corporation and KADWREC were established towards addressing the seeming challenges. “The commission is mandated to ensure better service delivery and regulation of water and sanitation services in the state. “The idea is that once the regulations are developed, we send them to the State Ministry of Justice to gazette and then we get the state government to endorse and give the go ahead to commence the implementation of the regulations. “We intend to implement them fully come January, 2025 God willing, as we have embarked on advocacy activities having gone to zones 1 and 2 where we talked to traditional rulers, security agencies and the Judiciary.”

Nairaland / General / NEMA Trains Emergency Volunteer Corps by Jatuski: 11:06am On Dec 16, 2024 |
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday, organised a training for Grassroots Emergency Volunteer Corps (GEVC) to mitigate disasters in Kaduna State. Mohammed Suliman, North-West Zonal Coordinator of the agency, made this known on Thursday at a training programme for volunteers for emergency responses and evacuation procedures. Suliman was represented at the event by Halima Sulaiman, Chief Information Officer of the agency. He said the training would equip the volunteers with the skills to respond and prevent emergencies at the grassroots level. He said the training, which attracted disaster management experts from NEMA, Red Cross and fire service, would also provide the requisite knowledge to render First Aid. Suliman said that since disasters occur in communities, the volunteers would serve as first responders to victims. He said they would equally as a link to the communities and disaster management agencies, hence the training. “The statutory agencies alone cannot get to the nook and crannies of the country, which is why we chose the disaster risk reduction strategy. “We believe community members should be able to manage disasters before the arrival of statutory emergency agencies. “So, it is your role as volunteers to assist your community and work with us to mitigate disasters and save lives,” Suliman said. The Senior Fire Superintendent, Kaduna Fire Service, Moses Ishaya, said the volunteers would be trained on basic fire evacuation drills to save lives in case of fire outbreaks. He commended the volunteers for accepting to contribute their quota in saving lives of members of the community. He described volunteerism as an integral part of disaster management as disaster, he said, affects all and should be everybody’s business. “It is my belief that the training will inform and prepare volunteers about disaster prevention, mitigation and response to ensure a disaster resilient society, ” Ishaya said. One of the participants, Aminu Mohammed, thanked NEMA for organising the training. He assured the agency that the volunteers would do their best as first emergency responders. The participants were trained on basic first aid training, defensive driving and safety compliance as well as fire prevention and response.

Nairaland / General / Ali M Ali: Redefining Media Management by Jatuski: 6:57am On Dec 16, 2024 |
By; Dr. SUNDAY ISUWA Since taking the helm of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the largest news agency in Africa, Ali M Ali has demonstrated an exceptional understanding of his role and responsibilities. His leadership has elevated the agency's reputation on a global scale, significantly enhancing both the organisation's image and that of Nigeria as a whole. Public relations practitioners often assert, "You can't build an image where there is none." However, Ali possesses the unique ability to create a compelling image that resonates widely and creates a substantial impact. This has been evident during his brief tenure at NAN. Appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on October 19, 2023, Ali has not only delivered impressive performance metrics but has also transformed NAN into a thriving media entity. His focus on media management has fostered a sense of pride among the staff and their families, thanks to the positive changes he is implementing. The accomplishments under Ali's leadership are numerous, and while I can only touch upon a few, I am confident that many more will emerge. Upon assuming office, he proactively established a network by engaging with stakeholders, including governors and policymakers, while maintaining the integrity of journalism and its vital role. Furthermore, Ali organised a significant conference addressing security issues in the Sahel region, drawing participation from a diverse array of stakeholders, including a former military president, the Chief of Defense Staff, diplomats, and policymakers. The decisions made during this conference are crucial in helping stakeholders confront the pressing security challenges in the region. Under Ali's guidance, NAN is not just reporting news but also offering solutions through high-quality leadership. He has also made strides in reducing operational costs, notably by introducing clean and renewable energy sources. The agency now primarily runs on solar power, with exceptions only for equipment that may harm the solar infrastructure. "We invested in solar, and we don't lack power supply here at NAN," Ali shared during my visit. I have come to know Ali as a man of profound knowledge, wisdom, and humility. He has consistently supported my growth and development since our early encounters, when he served as the political editor at ThisDay Newspaper. He has always regarded me not merely as a journalist but as a younger brother deserving of mentorship and support. When I shared the news of my Doctorate Degree in Mass Communication with him, he responded, “Sunday, I've always believed you would go far.” As the Editor of LEADERSHIP Newspaper, it became evident that Ali is dedicated to uplifting others. He has sacrificed for his reporters and line editors, exposing them to influential figures and teaching them how to navigate relationships without compromising journalistic ethics. These admirable qualities have contributed significantly to his effectiveness as a media manager, and they also benefit anyone willing to embrace his mentorship and guidance. Ali's focus on modernising NAN's operations has been transformative, enhancing its digital presence and improving the quality of news delivery. He has invested in technology and staff training to ensure that everyone is equipped with the latest skills. Moreover, he has established partnerships with international news agencies and organizations, boosting NAN's visibility and credibility on a global scale. His representation of NAN at various international conferences has promoted Nigerian news and perspectives, furthering international cooperation in news reporting. Recognising the importance of local news coverage, Ali ensures that NAN reports on issues pertinent to Nigerians, and is now expanding news coverage into Nigeria's three major languages: Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. This commitment is strengthening trust and relevance among local audiences. Ali has also prioritised public engagement through outreach programmes that connect NAN management with both internal and external stakeholders. These initiatives foster a greater understanding of media responsibilities and journalistic ethics. Additionally, NAN staff now participate in road walks and regular exercise sessions, cultivating a culture of wellness. Ali has also broken new ground by organising social gatherings for the staff and their families, reinforcing bonds not only among colleagues but also within their families. While I cannot enumerate all the remarkable achievements Ali has accomplished at NAN within a year, it is clear that he is redefining media management in ways that others can learn from. His initiatives reflect a steadfast commitment to transforming NAN into a more dynamic and influential media organisation, positively impacting the landscape of Nigerian journalism and beyond. Dr Sunday Isuwa is a journalist and editor.

Nairaland / General / BATTIC Commissioning By President Tinubu – A Fulfilment Of A Dream by Jatuski: 4:51pm On Dec 15, 2024 |
By AHMAD IBRAHIM Recently, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commissioned the state of the art Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC) at the Nigerian Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja. This transformative initiative and laudable developmental strides of the Ministry of interior and other sister organizations under the able leadership of the Honourable Minister of Interior, Mr Bunmi Tunji – Ojo is commendable and quite exemplary. It’s worthy to note that the organizations involved in this project jointly resolved to do away with any inter – ministerial rivalry of sort and delivered this world class project for the benefits of Nigerians. The magnificent edifice named after the President is more than a building. It is rather a bold step in modernizing immigration infrastructure and a powerful tool in the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) on-going efforts to safeguard the nation’s borders, manage migration effectively, enhance national security and to foster stronger ties within the ECOWAS region. This multifaceted complex comprising several critical components will play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s security and migration management. These components include: The Command and Control Centre for Regular Migration; The NIS Data Centre and Visa Approval Centre; The Interior Data Centre; The ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) Centre and the 4.1mw Solar Farm. Each of these components has been meticulously designed to meet international standards, ensuring that Nigeria now not only catches up with global trends but becomes a leader in the management of migration data. These are very good developments and a new dawn of migration management in Nigeria. Unfortunately over ten years ago before the coming of the present administration of President Tinubu, Nigeria which is seen as the giant of Africa, regrettably was not able to join other West African Countries in the implementation of the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) project until now after six West African Countries have fully deployed the ENBIC as at June, 2024. Nigerians are indeed grateful to the present administration for making this dream a reality. We also commend the vision and wisdom, the doggedness and absolute political will of President Tinubu and the Honourable Minister of Interior, Mr. Bunmi Tunji – Ojo for this remarkable achievement. The ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) is a regional identity card for citizens of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The ENBIC is replacing the ECOWAS Travel Certificate which is currently in use in the ECOWAS sub-region and it is only a travel document and requires a resident card after ninety days stay in these ECOWAS member countries while the ENBIC is now and will be use as a travel document and as a resident card for Nigerians currently residing in any of the ECOWAS member States. The ECOWAS Forum has agreed to accelerate the implementation of the ENBIC along with the abolition of the ninety days stay limit. This will strengthen free movement, residence, and establishment rights for ECOWAS Citizens. The implementation of the Biometric Smart Card is an ECOWAS obligation and was adopted in the year 2014 by the ECOWAS Heads of States and Governments. Senegal on the 4th October, 2016 became the first Country to start issuing the Cards, followed by Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Benin, The Gambia and Sierra Leone. Despite the implementation of the ENBIC by these West African Countries, the ENBIC project has not been too successful and effective due to the lack of the presence and implementation of the ENBIC in Nigeria which has 60 to 70% ECOWAS Population but the recent commissioning and implementation of the ENBIC in Nigeria by President Tinubu is a watershed, a milestone and a welcome development in the ECOWAS Sub-Region. There is no doubt that this implementation by Nigeria will boost the morale of not only her citizens residing in these West African Countries but to all ECOWAS Citizens and other stakeholders as the resident card is been abolish in these ECOWAS Countries. Ahmad Ibrahim is an International Security Printer and writes from No 50, Lokoja/Gwari Road, Kaduna, Kaduna State.

Politics / Akpabio Not Qualified To Judge Fubara, Says Timi Frank by Jatuski: 4:35pm On Dec 15, 2024 |
*Says Rivers’ Governor more decent, responsible Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Sunday, described the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, as most unqualified to judge the personality and character of the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara. Frank who made this assertion while reacting to Akpabio’s recent tirade against Fubara in a statement in Abuja, said Akpabio cannot give what he does not have. Akpabio had while speaking as special guest of honour at a public lecture and book launch held in Port Harcourt to mark the 57th birthday anniversary of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accused Fubara of “treachery and betrayal” against Wike. He reminded Akpabio that even though the feet of birds may face the ground no matter how high they soar, character is like pregnancy which cannot be hidden forever and that a friend to a betrayal is himself a betrayer, “after all birds of the same feather flock together.” Frank said: “The man who spoke is a known betrayer, the man who he was defending is a betrayer. So a betrayer and treacherous character is most unqualified to tag a more decent and responsible man a betrayer. “Akpabio has betrayal in his DNA, alongside Minister Wike. Both of them have castigated the APC in the past, only to turn around to wine, dine with and praise the same party. What should we call that? Is it not strange that Akpabio has suddenly become the mouthpiece of Wike, being birds of the same feather? “Akpabio has proved overtime that he is a Pharisee who sees the speck in another’s eyes whereas he has a log in his. Who is the betrayer? A man who insists that the the resources of Rivers State should be used for the benefit of its people and not to serve a godfather or a man who approved four budgets for the President that are running concurrently in 2024? “Who is a betrayer? A man who is fighting to liberate Rivers state from Wike’s strangle-hold of oppression or a man who turned the 10th Senate into a rubber stamp and an extension of the executive? “When Akpabio was elected to the Senate in 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, he usurped the position of minority leader from Senator James Manager who was then the most ranking Senator from the South South against established Senate tradition despite being a rookie legislator. “Akpabio betrayed the PDP when he defected to the APC even as minority leader in the 8th Senate. Besides, we don’t think Wike can complain of being betrayed because despite past antecedents, he is still very well in the game of betrayal by being a PDP minister in an APC administration. “Wike betrayed PDP in cahoots with four other governors and the party lost massively in 2023. Since then he has remained incurable by ensuring that all efforts by leaders of the party to put their acts together are frustrated. “Akpabio hates Governor Fubara because he is not used to standing for his people, when they need him the most.” Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, called on Governor Fubara not be distracted as Senator Akpabio is known for what he’s doing presently. He plays the politics of ’where belle face’. He said: “Remain steadfast Governor Fubara as God will grant you victory over your political opponents and traducers just like your recent victory at the Appeal Court restoring monthly allocations to Rivers State. The end will justify the means at end of the day. “We urge the public to disregard Akpabio's baseless accusations against Governor Fubara and instead focus on the issues that matter most to the people of Rivers State.”

Politics / Group Wants Najomo As Substantive DG, NCAA , Lauds Transformation In Agency by Jatuski: 2:52am On Dec 14, 2024 |
The Renewed Hope Ambassadors Network (RHAN) has lauded the transformational strides recorded in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) under the leadership of Captain Chris Najomo, as the Acting Director-General. In a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Opialu Opailu, RHAN highlighted Captain Najomo’s achievements and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to confirm his appointment as the substantive DG. Opailu praised the depth of professionalism, industry experience, and managerial excellence demonstrated by Captain Najomo since his assumption of office. “This is a man who has come into the industry not as a novice but as one of Nigeria’s finest aviators. “Captain Chris Najomo is undoubtedly one of the most proficient pilots not only in Nigeria but globally. His wealth of experience and dedication make him an invaluable asset to our nation’s aviation industry,” Opailu stated. Highlighting his exceptional qualifications, RHAN noted “Captain Najomo has paid his dues in the aviation industry. “His tenure as Managing Director of an airline gives him a unique insight into the pains and challenges of operators. This dual perspective—as a pilot and an administrator—has enabled him to implement policies that balance regulatory oversight with industry development. His approach ensures that operators thrive while passengers enjoy safety and reliability.” RHAN further commended Captain Najomo’s impact on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, describing his leadership as transformative. The statement emphasized that under his watch, the NCAA has experienced a renewed sense of purpose and efficiency. “When you visit the NCAA today, you will find an energized and motivated workforce,” Opailu noted. “The smiles on the faces of staff members reflect the positive changes Captain Najomo has brought to the agency. This is a leader who prioritizes staff welfare, operational excellence, and stakeholder engagement. His tenure has fostered an environment where innovation and professionalism thrive.” The Renewed Hope Ambassadors Network also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the wisdom in appointing Captain Najomo and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, to oversee the aviation sector. These appointments, the statement said, have elevated Nigeria’s standing within the global aviation community. “Under this leadership, Nigeria’s aviation industry has regained its credibility on the global stage,” Opailu said. “The international community now respects Nigeria’s aviation standards and practices, thanks to the strategic vision and leadership of Captain Najomo and Minister Keyamo.” In its appeal to President Tinubu, RHAN called for the immediate confirmation of Captain Najomo as the substantive Director-General of Civil Aviation. The organization argued that such a move would ensure continuity and further strengthen the gains made under his leadership. “The discussion about who should occupy the office of the substantive DG of the NCAA should not be a matter of worry,” Opailu emphasized. “Captain Najomo is the right man for the job. He is a round peg in a round hole, embodying the technical expertise, regulatory insight, and managerial skill required to lead the NCAA effectively.” RHAN contrasted Captain Najomo’s tenure with the controversies that plagued some past DGs, many of whom faced allegations of corrupt practices and investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “The era of leadership instability and corruption in the NCAA is over,” Opailu declared. “Captain Najomo represents a clean break from the past. His administration has restored transparency, accountability, and trust in the agency. We must not take this progress for granted. Losing him would be a monumental setback for the aviation industry.” The Renewed Hope Ambassadors Network underscored the broader implications of confirming Captain Najomo as the substantive DGCA. The statement noted that his leadership aligns with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes economic growth, job creation, and infrastructural development. “Aviation is a critical sector for Nigeria’s economic transformation,” Opailu remarked. “Under Captain Najomo’s leadership, the NCAA is well-positioned to drive this transformation. His vision for a safe, efficient, and globally competitive aviation sector is precisely what Nigeria needs at this time.” RHAN appealed to President Tinubu, and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for the confirmation of the appointment of Capt. Chris Ona Najomo as the substantive Director-General of Civil Aviation of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, saying it has confidence in the leadership of the regulatory body for aviation.

Politics / Timi Frank Condemns Tinubu’s Silence Over Wike’s Illegal Demolition Of Houses In by Jatuski: 1:02pm On Dec 13, 2024 |
Former National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Friday, in strong terms condemned the deafening silence of President Bola Tinubu over illegal mass demolition of houses by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Frank who made this condemnation in a statement in Abuja, urged the President to urgently call Wike to order and halt the demolitions or suffer the repercussion of the oppressive tendencies of the FCT administration during the 2027 presidential poll. Frank said: “Mr. President, say, so much has been going on with FCT since Wike took over as Minister of the FCT. In the process of acting sycophantically to impress you, he is demonstrating that he is performing minister, he is inflicting pains for Nigerians. that it's causing more pains to Nigerians in FCT. That Wike is terrorizing the FCT. He lamented that the actions of the Minister have resulted in immense loss and pain for the owners of the demolished houses. Frank said: “It is shocking and unacceptable that President Bola Tinubu has maintained a deafening silence on this matter. “As the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it is his duty to protect the rights and welfare of all citizens. His silence on this issue is a clear indication of his administration's endorsement of illegality and disregard for the plight of ordinary Nigerians.” Frank also condemned comments credited to Senate President Godswill Akpabio who on Thursday said during a motion meant to halt demolitions in FCT moved by Senator Ireti Kingibe, that the Senate cannot stop Wike from demolishing houses in the territory because they are court-ordered. “Invariably, it means that the resolution of the Senate urging Wike to stop demolitions pending its investigations is dead on arrival, therefore the more reason why the President must wade in and urgently stop the illegal and anti-people actions of Wike,” he said. He accused Akpabio and his ilks of allegedly being among the beneficiaries of Wike’s land grabbing posture in the name of cleaning and restoring the FCT masterplan and called for something to done urgently to stop the ravaging bulldozers of the FCTA. Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, however reminded that President not to be unmindful of the fact that it is him and not Wike that will be on the ballot in 2027 because Wike’s action in making enemies for him is enough to make him lose the election. “From all indications, it does appear that Wike is carrying out the demolitions with the approval of the President which explains why the President has been mum the face of these tyrannical, dictatorial and illegal demolitions being carried out by Wike in the FCT,” he said. He accused Wike of being vindictive by taking out his anger of losing his political battle with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State on innocent and law-abiding residents of the FCT through demolitions and disruptions. He described a situation where Wike will tell house owners after demolition of their property to go to court and follow the law, as inhuman when he knows they will not be able to get justice under judicial system he has done all he can to compromise. He declared that the present demolition exercises by Wike and the inability of house owners with genuine title documents would further scare away foreign investors that the President is making efforts to attract to the country. “How will investors come to Nigeria when they know they cannot get justice in the event of breaches,” he declared. Frank added: “It is most unfortunate that Wike is presently administering the FCT like his personal estate even as the President remains silent. The evidences are there everywhere, how Wike has been pulling down houses and taking over lands from companies, private owners and business people, and thereafter reallocate the same plots to himself via proxies, his family members, cronies and political associates. “We urge the President to take immediate action to address the suffering of the victims of these demolitions. The President must intervene to ensure that the rights of these citizens are protected and that they receive adequate compensation for their losses. “We equally call on all Nigerians to join me in condemning the actions of the Minister of FCT and the silence of the President on this matter. We must stand together to demand justice and protection for the rights of all citizens.”

Politics / AYCF Urges Tinubu To Rethink Controversial SMDF/PAGMI Appointment by Jatuski: 2:54pm On Dec 09, 2024 |
The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has added their voice to the growing calls for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the appointment of Yazid Shehu Umar Danfulani as the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund/Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Initiative (SMDF/PAGMI). In a statement issued by the President General, Yerima Shettima, the AYCF expressed concern over what they described as a "mix-up" in the appointments announced on December 6, 2024. The AYCF acknowledged the contributions of Hajia Fatima Umaru-Shinkafi, who was reappointed to the role after Danfulani's initial appointment was reversed. However, they argued that the sector requires new leadership to achieve greater heights. They highlighted Danfulani's background in banking, computing, and business administration, as well as his experience at the Central Bank of Nigeria and as Zamfara State Commissioner of Commerce and Industry. According to the AYCF, Danfulani's innovative approach and expertise make him an ideal candidate to implement the Renewed Hope Agenda for the solid minerals sector. They expressed the believe that his leadership would help revitalize the SMDF/PAGMI and drive reforms in the critical solid minerals sector. The group urged President Tinubu to review the decision in favor of Danfulani's leadership. The Solid Minerals Development Fund and the Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Initiative are crucial components of Nigeria's efforts to diversify its economy and boost non-oil revenue. The AYCF's call for reconsideration of Danfulani's appointment comes at a time when the country is seeking to drive reforms in the solid minerals sector. The AYCF highlights the importance of appointing a leader with the right expertise and vision to lead the SMDF/PAGMI. They further expressed believe that the success of these initiatives hinges on the appointment of a leader with the right expertise and vision to drive them forward. In their view, Yazid Shehu Umar Danfulani is the ideal candidate for this role, and they are urging President Tinubu to reconsider his appointment in order to achieve the desired goals for the solid minerals sector. The AYCF's stance on this issue highlights the importance of leadership in driving the success of any organization or initiative. A leader with the right expertise and vision can inspire and motivate their team, set clear goals and objectives, and make strategic decisions that will lead to success. In the case of the SMDF and PAGMI, the AYCF believes that Yazid Shehu Umar Danfulani possesses the necessary qualities to lead these initiatives to success. "Yazid Shehu Umar Danfulani is a seasoned professional with a wealth of experience in the solid minerals sector. "He has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the industry and has a proven track record of delivering results in similar roles. His vision for the sector aligns with the goals of the SMDF and PAGMI, and his leadership style is one that inspires confidence and trust in those around him. "President Tinubu's appointment of Yazid Shehu Umar Danfulani would send a strong signal to the industry and the international community that Nigeria is serious about developing its solid minerals sector. It would also ensure that the SMDF and PAGMI have the leadership they need to succeed in achieving their goals of promoting sustainable development, creating jobs, and boosting economic growth," AYCF said.

Politics / Protesters Storm Senate Over Bill For Establishment Of Marine Coast Guard by Jatuski: 8:03pm On Dec 05, 2024 |
*as citizens call for immediate stop No fewer than 5,000 activists, including youth and women from all over the country, stormed the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday to express their strong opposition to the Coastal Guards Establishment Bill. The protesters, under the umbrella of Concerned Citizens of Nigeria, carried placards and banners with inscriptions such as "No to Coastal Guards Bill" and "Don't Waste Our Resources." They chanted slogans and sang songs, demanding that the National Assembly reject the bill. According to Kabir Adamu Matazu, the spokesperson for the group, the Coastal Guards Bill is unnecessary and will only duplicate the functions of existing security agencies, such as the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Marine Police, and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA). Matazu argued that the bill is a waste of resources and will create confusion and conflict among the various security agencies. He also pointed out that the Nigerian Security Agencies are already highly rated and acclaimed internationally, and therefore, there is no need to establish a new agency. The protesters called on the National Assembly to reject the bill and instead focus on strengthening and bolstering the functions and capacity of existing institutions. They also urged the government to invest scarce resources in addressing the fundamental problems facing the country, rather than embarking on unnecessary adventures. "Let us state unequivocally that members of the Nigerian Coastal Guards will not and cannot better protect Nigerian's maritime interest and further regional coastal security, an additional agency will do nothing to improve these situations," Matazu said in his address. "Profoundly repetitive and reoccurring is the problem of duplications. For instance, what will the responsibility of the Merchant Shipping Act and NIMASA Act be if the Coastal Guards are saddled with the same functions of the training of seafarers? "Another duplicative role is the involvement of the Coastal Guards in the performance of the responsibilities of monitoring and security surveillance of Nigeria’s waterways and also in hydrography since both the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Navy are already involved in both duties. This has been further compounded by the presidential approval for the conversion of the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Office into the National Hydrographic Agency, and the designation of the Nigerian Navy Hydrographer as the Hydrographer of the Federation. "The bill has been further rendered null and irrelevant considering the functions and responsibilities of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), which constitutionally is to enforce laws and regulations within Nigeria’s inland waters. "Rather than solve any chaotic problem in the maritime sector, this bill if passed into law will only provoke challenges experienced in administration. This is so because the establishment of coastal guards will complicate the coordination of the maritime sector, initiate unnecessary competition and undermine cohesion, leading to anarchy. These will be taken advantage of by criminal elements and conspirators enhancing negative ratings and culminating in the re-enlisting of the country into the Maritime Piracy Index, which it exited in 2022. "There is, therefore, no gainsaying the fact that establishing the Nigerian Coastal Guards, given the peculiarity of our resources and structure, will only create an ambience and actual possible occurrence of potential jurisdictional conflict and operational inefficiencies, which is similar to what is happening in the US, UK, and South Africa, with consequential negative exploitation of our economy. "Nigeria does not need a Coastal Guard. We strongly believe that this broken record will henceforth never be played again. It is in our collective interest to kill this Bill. It is in the interest of democracy’s future and even the future of our children to kill this Bill once and for all. "This Bill does not address any of the fundamental problems of Nigeria, rather it is on the voyage of adventurism. This bill is of no business in the first instance and needs to die now without more waste of time and public funds."

Politics / Timi Frank Warns Of Mass Protest If Farotimi Is Not Released by Jatuski: 11:10am On Dec 05, 2024 |
*Issues 48-hour ultimatum to release to FG Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Thursday, gave the Federal and Ekiti State Government 48 hours to release a human rights lawyer, Dr. Dele Farotimi from remand or face mass protests. Frank who made this call in a statement in reaction to the remand of Farotimi, called on Nigerians to occupy all police stations and formations in the country should the government fail to release the rights activist unconstitutionally within the stipulated time beginning from when he was remanded. An Ekiti State Chief Magistrates Court, Ado Ekiti Division, had on Wednesday, ordered the remand of Farotimi, in the state’s correctional centre. Farotimi was arraigned in court over alleged defamation of character following his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’ where he alleged, among others, that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola, had compromised the Supreme Court. However, Frank said there is more to the arrest and remand of Farotimi than the alleged defamation alibi. He said the remand was a way by the Federal Government to intimidate and harass Farotimi for often criticising the anti-people policies of the President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He condemned the arrest and remand of Farotimi even as he condemned the police and the judiciary for turning themselves into the oppressive arm of the present administration. According to him Farotimi doesn’t deserve his current travails because he is a man who believes in and respects the rule of law. “Farotimi is a man of truth, a man of principle and a defender of democracy. If they believe he has done anything inappropriate, they should have invited him peacefully and he honour their invitation rather than the way he was arrested and subsequently remanded on an alleged offence that is bailable under the Nigerian law. “This shows clearly that it is not because of the petition from Afe Babalola that is making them to give Farotimi this highly dehumanizing experience. There is more to the arrest because Farotimi is known to be a vocal critic of the government.” Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, called on Nigerians to join in the fight to free Farotimi from remand and equally stop the government from using state institutions to oppress and suppress Nigerians speaking out against their dictatorial and hardship-inducing policies, saying, it is Farotimi today, it may be another Nigerian tomorrow.” He quoted a German Pastor Martin Niemöller who said: “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Politics / NAN Calls On Youth To Shun Nationwide Protests Against INEC Leadership by Jatuski: 9:29am On Dec 05, 2024 |
The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) is deeply concerned about the upcoming nationwide protests led by the ReformINEC and SackYakubu Movement, scheduled to commence in Abuja on December 5, 2024, and subsequently spread to other major cities across Nigeria. A statement issued by the Chairman Salihu Suleiman acknowledged the importance of peaceful expression and the right to voice dissent, but urged the youth and citizens of Nigeria to reconsider participation in these protests. According to the statement, "The call for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, underlines a critical moment in our nation's political landscape. However, we believe that these protests, framed by elements of division and unrest, are not the solution to the challenges we face. Mobilizing our youth in such a manner could not only incite unnecessary tensions but also distract from constructive dialogue and engagement needed to pursue meaningful electoral reforms. "We urge our young people to channel their energy and passion towards constructive initiatives that promote dialogue, peace, and unity within our communities. Rather than joining movements that may be influenced by ulterior motives and sponsored dissidence, let us work together towards solutions that foster a strong, credible electoral system. "We commend the efforts of all civic organizations and individuals advocating for electoral reform, but we strongly believe that such advocacy must be rooted in dialogue and collaboration with the government and relevant stakeholders. The government, too, must be proactive in addressing the underlying concerns raised by citizens rather than allowing divisive protests to dominate the narrative. "It is vital that we uphold the value of democracy and work collectively to strengthen our institutions. We call on the government to engage actively with the concerns of the populace and to address any grievances through appropriate, non-violent measures. Let us be vigilant against any attempts to disrupt the peace and stability of our beloved nation. "We call upon the youth to stand for unity, peace, and constructive engagement. Let us be the generation that embraces dialogue and works towards the collective good of all Nigerians". ENDS

Politics / AYCF Condemns Planned Nationwide Protests Against INEC Chairman by Jatuski: 8:35am On Dec 05, 2024 |
The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has expressed its firm condemnation of the planned upcoming nationwide protests organized by the "ReformINEC and SackYakubu" Movement, scheduled to commence in Abuja on December 5, 2024. AYCF in a statement by it's President General Yerima Shettima said, the protest is viewed as attempts by saboteurs and enemies of the state to undermine the democratic process and destabilize our nation. "It is disheartening to see a segment of the youth population being misled by groups that seek to further their own agendas under the guise of reform. "The integrity of our electoral system is paramount, and attacking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, without substantive evidence is not only unwarranted but also counterproductive to the democratic values we strive to uphold. "We call upon the youth of Nigeria to disregard these divisive calls. Engaging in protests that threaten to incite chaos and instability serves only to undermine the progress we have made as a nation. Our focus should remain on constructive dialogue and collaboration to address any legitimate grievances, rather than resorting to actions that may lead to national discord. "Furthermore, we urge the government and relevant authorities to take appropriate measures to dissuade dissent rooted in misinformation and to protect the country from any group seeking to exploit the youth for their own selfish motives. It is essential that we prioritize unity, peace, and progress, fostering an environment conducive to growth and development for all Nigerians. "We, therefore, call on all stakeholders to champion a collective effort aimed at enhancing our electoral processes through meaningful engagement and dialogue, rather than through protests fueled by discontent and malice. Together, let us build a stronger, more united Nigeria" the statement stressed.

Business / 2025–2027 Kaduna Budget To Maintain Momentum Of Reforms - Commissioner by Jatuski: 9:06pm On Nov 29, 2024 |
*Says 2025 budget formulation process challenging *Stakeholders applaud Governor Uba Sani, make inputs The Commissioner, Kaduna State Planning and Budget Commission, Mukhtar Ahmed has assured that the state's 2025–2027 Draft Budget has been crafted to maintain the momentum of previous reforms. He gave the assurance at the Budget Town Hall Meeting on Friday November 29, 2024 at Hotel 17 in Kaduna. "The 2025–2027 budget has been crafted to maintain the momentum of previous reforms, ensuring that the progress made in recent years is not lost. At the same time, we are committed to creating a budget that is sensitive to current economic realities, resilient in the face of external shocks, and focused on sustainable growth," he said. Presenting the draft 2025 budget overview, he explained that the 2025–2027 Draft Budget has been prepared based on the following key macroeconomic assumptions and considerations: "Assumptions: i. Crude oil price at $70 per barrel ii. Production benchmark at 1.6 million barrels per day iii. Exchange rate at ₦1,400/$1 iv. Inflation rate at 24% v. Mineral ratio at 20% vi. National Real GDP Growth at 3.0%" According to him, the considerations:L that informed the drafting, include, "Limiting the size of the budget in line with realizable revenues to account for economic uncertainties and shocks. "Prioritizing funding for the completion of ongoing projects, with a focus on addressing inherited capital liabilities. "Maintaining the minimum budget allocation ratio of 60:40 for capital to recurrent expenditures. "Allocating 26% to Education and 16% to Health, totaling 42% of the proposed budget for these critical sectors." From his presentation, the key budget highlights featured, "Total Proposed Budget Size: ₦790,439,580,083.16 "Opening Balance: ₦75,097,780,795.67 " Recurrent Revenue Projections: ₦452,510,584,215.28 "Recurrent Expenditure including Debt Service: ₦248,245,007,409.60 "Net Recurrent Revenue (Transfer to Capital Budget): ₦279,363,357,601.35 "Other Capital Receipts (Aids, Grants & Loans): ₦262,831,215,072.21 "Total Capital Expenditure: ₦542,194,572,673.56" Giving the expenditure breakdown by sectors grouping, he said that the economic Sector (Agriculture, Public Works, Infrastructure): ₦370,557,608,564.16, Social Sector (Education, Health, Social Development)₦358,070,895,572.14 and General Administration ₦ 48,328,500,762.08, Law and Justice Sector: ₦ 13,482,575,184.78. "The 2025 budget formulation process was a bit challenging, trying to formulate a realistic and modest budget in the face of a struggle to avoid a deficit financing which is a bit of an unusual practice away from the usual Balanced budget. "The initial deficit was as a result of increased debt costs, implementation of new minimum wage, pension liabilities, and increased funding to Climate Change activities in view of the increasing hazards demanding quick action in line with the global focus and practices. The projected deficit was N117.5 Billion representing 15% of the total state’s revenue. However, with confirmation of a significant amount of closing balances from surplus of capital receipt drawdowns, the expected deficit has been eliminated thereby making the draft budget now balanced. "Ladies and gentlemen, as I present this draft 2025 budget of ₦ 790.43 billion, it is essential to remember that this is more than a financial document. It is a statement of our collective priorities, a commitment to improving lives, and a roadmap for future development in Kaduna State. Your participation in this process is invaluable, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts, comments, and suggestions as we work together to shape the future of our state," he informed. He described the town hall engagement as very important, which practically reaffirms the government’s agelong commitment to making budgets participatory in line with the principles of OGP. "These principles are rooted in the values of transparency, accountability, and fostering citizen engagement in governmental activities. Transparency remains a cornerstone of governmental budgeting, and as such, a transparent budget process helps build trust and credibility within the community. "Engaging citizens in this process improves accountability and enhances the perception of governmental performance, reinforcing the public's confidence in the value they receive from their government," he said. He extended appreciation to the civil society groups here and those participating remotely through teleconferencing for their relentless contributions to the budgeting process by availing themselves to the actualization of an inclusive budgeting. "This proposed budget reflects the continuation of a commitment to the SUSTAIN Agenda, translating the collective aspirations into concrete actions that will improve the lives of the people of Kaduna State, strengthen our economic responsibility, and pave the way for a more prosperous future for generations to come. As we know, a budget is more than numbers; it is a reflection of our values, a roadmap to achieving our goals, and a framework for wise investments. "Adhering to the previous practice, the draft budget document has been made available on the Commission’s website ahead of this meeting, allowing for public input, comments, and suggestions. We remain committed to upholding the values of Transparency, Accountability, and Citizen Engagement as we move forward," he assured. He however, noted that fuel prices and exchange rate have maintained a pattern more inclined with skyrocketing, exerting a trickle effect on transportation and the overall cost of goods and services which manifests as an additional pressure on general purchasing power further intensifying the inflationary trends across the country. "As we navigate these challenges, Kaduna State is faced with a crucial need to diversify its economy, strengthen institutions and improve governance, hence the State is fast responding to these realities by embracing structural reforms outlined in the SUSTAIN Agenda, with a focus on Agriculture, Rural Economic Development, Security, Infrastructure, and Human Capital Development. "These priorities have been integrated into the State Development Plan and are being implemented through the 2024 budget as the key instrument, with huge milestones evident in the massive investments in education and skills development, improvement in healthcare, enhancement of security, infrastructural development, and community engagement and empowerment. "In this context, the Planning and Budget Commission, Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service and all stakeholders are on deck towards adopting innovative revenue-generation strategies to reduce over-reliance on statutory allocations, ensuring the resilience of our state’s economy in the face of national economic challenges," Mukhtar said. Meanwhile, as Governor Uba Sani hosted the town hall meeting on the 2025 Budget draft tagged “Sustaining Rural Transformation and Inclusive Development” stakeholders commended him for high performance on implementation. Discussions at the Town Hall Meeting were open, robust and incisive. Stakeholders made suggestions and inputs into the proposed 2025 Budget. They also commended Governor Uba Sani’s administration for the implementation and high performance of the 2024 Budget which has impacted on the lives of the citizens of Kaduna State. The Governor assured the stakeholders that the collated suggestions will be considered and incorporated into the 2025 Multi-Year Budget. The Governor said 2025 shall be devoted to the consolidation of the progress so far made in opening up the rural areas through massive infrastructural development. He added that every citizen of Kaduna State deserves to live a better life.

Politics / AYCF Reacts To 'unfounded Allegations' Against INEC Chairman by Jatuski: 7:49pm On Nov 29, 2024 |
The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has described recent criticisms leveled against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Professor Yakubu's Mahmood following the Edo Governorship election as unfounded. AYCF in a statement by its President General, Yerima Shettima said it firmly believes in the importance of a credible electoral process and stands in solidarity with INEC amidst unfounded allegations of electoral malpractice, adding that the essay will address the key criticisms, which highlighted INEC's efforts towards electoral reform, and emphasize the importance of constructive engagement in strengthening Nigeria's democracy. "Several criticisms have emerged, primarily focusing on the alleged ineffective utilization of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the Election Viewing Portal (IREV). "Accusations range from deliberate malfunction to a complete disregard for these technological advancements". The AYCF further acknowledged that challenges were encountered during the election, but these challenges do not equate to deliberate manipulation or a systemic failure of the systems themselves. "Rather, operational shortcomings in implementing protocols and managing the logistical complexities of a large-scale election are more likely explanations. "It’s crucial to differentiate between genuine technical difficulties and deliberate sabotage; attributing the former to the latter undermines the efforts undertaken by INEC to improve its processes. The claim that INEC deliberately refused to implement BVAS and IREV is not only misleading but also damages the credibility of serious accusations of misconduct. "It is important to understand the historical context in which INEC operates. Nigeria’s electoral history is marred by allegations of manipulation, administrative inefficiencies, and a lack of transparency. However, attributing all these failings solely to INEC is unfair and unproductive. "The commission operates within a complex political landscape with resource constraints and immense pressure to deliver free and fair elections. INEC's consistent adoption of new technologies, like BVAS and IREV, demonstrates its commitment to improving electoral integrity. "The willingness to learn from past mistakes, as evidenced by the INEC Chairman's statements in Akure, highlights the commission’s dedication to continuous improvement and accountability. "While individuals like Martins Obono and Jerry Wright-Ukwu have presented accusations against INEC, including “damning, incontrovertible evidence,” it is crucial to approach such claims with a healthy dose of skepticism and critical analysis". Shettima said in a democratic society, the burden of proof lies with the accuser, stressing that the accusations require rigorous investigation and verification before they can be accepted as fact, adding that relying on unsubstantiated allegations only serves to erode public trust in INEC and undermines the democratic process. The AYCF advocated for a thorough examination of all claims, ensuring that any evidence presented is subjected to independent scrutiny and that the spread of unsubstantiated accusations of institutional rigging and conspiracy only serves to create division and distrust. Moving forward, particularly in preparation for the 2027 elections, the AYCF called for collaborative support for INEC instead of engaging in a cycle of blame and mistrust, all stakeholders – political parties, civil society organizations, and the electorate – must work together to strengthen the electoral system. "This requires several key actions: advocating for increased financial and administrative autonomy for INEC, enhancing its capacity through training and professional development, and establishing robust and transparent oversight mechanisms. "The AYCF firmly believes that improving INEC’s effectiveness is vital for strengthening Nigerian democracy, and this requires constructive criticism, rooted in evidence and aimed at creating solutions, not merely leveling accusations. "The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum unequivocally supports INEC in its efforts to conduct free and fair elections. While acknowledging the challenges faced by the commission, we reject unfounded allegations and calls for undermining its authority. Shettima said, the path to credible elections lies in building up our institutions, not tearing them down. Constructive dialogue, evidence-based criticism, and collaborative efforts are vital to improving Nigeria's electoral process. The AYCF urged all stakeholders to work together, fostering a transparent and accountable environment that ensures the voice of the Nigerian people is heard and respected, stressing that only through collaborative efforts can we ensure the continued progress of our democracy and build a stronger, more credible electoral system.

"Most baffling is the fact that our military is highly respected in Africa and the world. Why are we finding it difficult handling these terror groups in our own country. Yes, progress is being made but despite the progress, more needs to be done to ensure the safety of citizens." "The armed forces and security sectors have made some progress, but we are far from safety. Revolutionary terrorism by insurgents and belligerents, sub-revolutionary terrorism by internal aggressors or establishment terrorism exemplified by violence against unarmed citizens, make it clear that we have quite some journey to make to our safe place," she said. Ballason also stressed the importance of character reform and the need for a national strategy to combat the ideology driving insurgency. "Our country needs more than the 2016 National Counter Terrorism Strategy policy framework. Our country is in dire need of character reform. This business of blood diamonds by the undertakers who run it has become so apparent by the mysticism that appears to shroud it," she said. The GOC in his remark explained the Constitutional mandate of the Army as maintaining the territorial integrity and securing its borders from violation on land, sea, or air; suppression of insurrection and act in aid of civil authorities to restore order, when called upon to do so by the President, but subject to such conditions as may be prescribed by an Act of the National Assembly. He further highlighted kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to security and projected some of the successes of the Armed forces including the release of hundreds of captives. He urged House of Justice and civil society groups to intensify engagement with relevant sectors so factors contributing to insecurity can be speedily addressed . He applauded the work that House of Justice is doing especially the annual Summit and Banquet and said his division is invested in military -civil relations and will continue to keep their door open to meaningful engagements Ballason expressed hope that the summit will provide a platform for stakeholders to come together and find a lasting solution to the insecurity in Nigeria. "When we meet on Friday, 29 November, 2024, it will not be to fix the blames; it will be to fix the problems. We owe it to ourselves to summon forth better virtues in order that we may surmount this monster," she said. The 9th Annual House of Justice Summit & Banquet is scheduled to hold on Friday, November 29, 2024, at the Epitome Events Centre in Kaduna, Nigeria. The event will be chaired by General Martin Luther Agwai (Rtd), Nigeria's former Chief of Defence Staff.

Agriculture / Nigeria: TELA Maize: IAR Determined To Ensure Food Security With Variety Crops by Jatuski: 9:50pm On Nov 28, 2024 |
*Insists TELA Maize is pest and drought resistant *GM crops not harmful to humans - Dr Abdulmalik The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has expressed its determination to continually carry out researches that will improve the livelihood of farmers and enhance food security in the country by introducing varieties of crops. The Director Research of the institute, Prof. Ado A. Yusuf, who was represented by Prof. Lucius l. Bamaiyi, Assistant Director (Research), while on visit to New Nigerian Newspapers Head Office in Kaduna on Thursday November 28, 2024 as part of tour of key media houses, explained that the institute established since 1922, has been working towards the progress of farmers in Nigeria. According to him, "Whatever research the institute carries out, is with a view to improving the livelihood of farmers and Nigerians as a whole by ensuring food security in the country." To achieve their desires, he stated that varieties of maize and other crops have been released since its establishment, stressing that the varieties introduced are meant to enhance its production in the country through the use of scientific ways of modifying the genetic composition of crop varieties. He lamented that farmers are being faced with pests ravaging the crops from the desired harvest. Bamaiyi said, "Early planting of maize by farmers faces the problem of drying the crops during the raining season after harvest. "Late planting of maize attracts pests that attack, resulting in insignificant harvest." He added. He advised farmers to stop buying insecticides to control the damage of the pests to the crops due to their danger, instead, they should plant genetically modified (GM) improved seedlings that would solve the problem. Bamaiyi stated that following the damage done to farmers by pests, science felt how to ameliorate the damage and came up with developing a Maize variety, TELA, that is resistant with the attack by the insect pests as well as drought due to climate change. He added that it is the simplest means of adaptation by farmers because all is done is to get the seed, plant them and maintain them as normal. He assured that the institute would not partner with anything that will be detrimental to farmers and efforts by government to enhance food security in the country. Explaining further, he said that TELA Maize yields gives 80 bags from Just one hectare. "Farmers realize it's better to buy F1 seed because of the yield. Not only TELA Maize, for any GM once you go for F2, it reduces yield," he advicesd. According to him, as a research institute, they have demanded for the parent line of TELA Maize so that they can develop it with Nigerian climate. Speaking further, he said that, "We are here for development, Nigeria needs development, that's why we are here. You are all aware Nigeria is a giant of Africa with over 200m population, so we need food security, which informs biotechnology. Agricultural biotechnology because IAR deals more with food crops, maize, sorghum and cowpea," he said. He added that Maize is very important in Nigeria, "no family doesn't eat something related to maize. At IAR, maize is one of our priority crops. We use generic modifications to improve yield," he stressed. Also speaking, Dr. Maimuna Mohammed Abdulmalik, LEAD, Department of Plant Science, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), said that farmers in the country have been advised to embrace biotechnological seeds in farming for improved yields, while consumers are advised not to be afraid of genetically modified (GM) crops because they are not harmful. According to her, Biotech has come to stay in order to prevent insects and pests from diminishing crops yield, especially maize which has become staple in almost all homes in the country "Hybrid crops are good for farmers in the country and technology will not only give them more yields it will also save the country foreign exchange." "With higher and more reliable maize production, TELA maize is the game changer in enhancing food and nutrition security in Nigeria. This is especially important, given the growing population and the demand for food. She disclosed that 90 per cent of Nigeria’s farming communities are small holder farmers in the rural areas, and that with TELA Maize their production capacity will be enhanced to feed even the urban populace. Dr. Abdulmalik explained that by reducing losses due to pests and drought, TELA maize can significantly boost farmers’ yields and incomes as Nigeria spends over 900 billion Naira (over USD 600 million) annually importing chemicals excluding cost of spraying to protect maize against the fall armyworm ravaging fields adding that by using TELA Maize varieties, it will result in increased livelihoods and contribute to Nigeria’s overall economic growth. Liking humans and plants, she said if an ugly man wants fine children he goes for a beautiful woman only finally have fine children that are thieves because of the trait they took from their mother. "Genetical make of plants and humans are the same, they are the same number which makes every individual unique. Which we use genes that are you same," she said. Other members of the team during the visit included; Prof. Rabiu Adamu, Coordinator TELA Maize and Prof. Muhyideen Oyekunle a breeder.

Nairaland / General / Rivers: US, UK Urged To Withdraw Fubara, Judges Visas For Derailing Democracy by Jatuski: 8:55pm On Nov 28, 2024 |
The National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has called on democratic nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and EU member states, to impose a visa ban on Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and several judges, including Justice M. Danagogo and Justice Wali. The NDC made this call during a press conference in Abuja, where they expressed alarm over the erosion of democratic principles and constitutional governance in Rivers State under Governor Fubara's leadership. In his address, convener Okwa Dan said Governor Fubara has made efforts to weaken the people's will and erode the rule of law, including influencing elections and pressuring the judiciary to support his authoritarian goals. Dan also accused the governor of activating a "brown envelope mission" to bribe judges in Rivers State. The NDC condemned the actions of judges like Justice Danagogo and Justice Wali, who have allegedly delivered verdicts that align with political interests rather than upholding the rule of law. The group described these judges as "Brown Envelope Judges" who have eroded public confidence in the judiciary. The NDC urged the international community to hold Governor Fubara and his associates accountable for their actions, which they believe undermine Nigeria's democratic future and destabilize the entire country. "We call on the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and EU member states to impose a visa ban on Governor Fubara, Oko-Jumbo, and other associates," the NDC said. "We also call on the international community to hold these individuals responsible for their actions and to support democratic governance in Nigeria." The NDC commended the lawful halt of federal revenue to Rivers State as an essential step in holding Governor Fubara accountable. They also praised judges like Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, Chief Judge John Tsoho, and Justice Peter Lifu, who have set themselves apart from "brown envelope" manipulations. The group called for international solidarity and urged civil society organizations, the media, and all well-meaning Nigerians to join them in the fight for democracy. "This is a call to save democracy from the hands of devourers, and unpatriotic individuals. This is a fight for a just cause; where the law must never be undermined, intimidated, abused, or subdued by any political individual or faction for any reason. "Additionally, we urge the judiciary to uphold its sacred duty as the custodian of justice. Judges must resist political interference and prioritize the rule of law above all else. The survival of Nigeria’s democracy depends on a judiciary that is impartial, independent, and committed to justice. "In conclusion, Rivers State stands at a critical juncture. The actions of Governor Fubara and his allies have placed the state’s democratic future in jeopardy. However, with collective action and international support in placing a visa ban on them, we can restore constitutional order and ensure that the voices of the people are heard." 1 Like

Politics / Govt's Must Act To Stop Proliferation Of Over 100m Small Arms In Africa - GPFN by Jatuski: 5:18pm On Nov 28, 2024 |
*Predicts a future where schools are not shut down by gunfire, markets thrive without fear of violence Small arms and light weapons have become silent engines of destruction in Africa, fueling conflicts, displacing millions, and exacerbating poverty, with over 100 million of them proliferated across Africa Country Director, Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN), Rev. John Joseph Hayab raised the Alarm, while speaking at the Youth Model African Summit in Abuja Nigeria, on on Thursday November 28, 2024. Delivering a paper on the topic: "Curtailing the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons by African Union Member States" he acknowledged the problems caused by proliferation of such arms and weapons. "These weapons, often unregistered and trafficked illicitly, find their way into the hands of armed groups, criminals, and extremists, perpetuating cycles of violence that rob our people of their future. "The statistics are alarming: according to recent reports by the Small Arms Survey, over 100 million small arms are in circulation in Africa, with approximately 80% of them in civilian hands. "These weapons contribute to over 70% of violent conflicts on the continent, perpetuating cycles of instability and insecurity. Behind every figure is a story of shattered families, displaced communities, and stunted development (Small Arms Survey, Global Firearms Holdings, 2023)," he said. According to him, although Africa has not been silent in the face of this challenge, more commitment is needed in addressing it. "The African Union's Silencing the Guns Agenda has set a bold target to end gun violence by 2030. Regional frameworks such as the Nairobi Protocol, the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, and the Kinshasa Convention represent our collective commitment to addressing this menace. "At the national level, many countries have made significant strides: Enacting laws to regulate arms trade and possession. Strengthening border controls to disrupt arms trafficking. Initiating community disarmament programmes to encourage voluntary surrender of illicit weapons," he noted. The GPFN Country Director explained that these efforts are commendable, but they must be amplified and sustained if they are to achieve the vision of a peaceful and prosperous Africa. He said that key challenges still exist despite progress made. "Weak Enforcement Mechanisms: Many member states struggle with inadequate resources and capacity to implement existing arms control policies effectively. "Our borders remain vulnerable to illicit trafficking networks, particularly in countries affected by conflict. "The absence of strong regional cooperation undermines efforts to track and combat the flow of illegal arms," he said. Reverend Hayab blamed poverty, inequality and political instability, inability to create conditions conducive to the proliferation of arms as as some key factors militating against ending the manage. He therefore, called on government's to expedite action. "Your Excellencies, if we are serious about curtailing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, we must move from rhetoric to action. "I therefore propose the following strategies: Strengthen Legislation and Enforcement: AU member states must adopt and enforce robust arms control laws. "This includes harmonizing national laws with international instruments like the Arms Trade Treaty and ensuring proper marking and tracing of firearms. "Enhance Border Security: We must invest in modern border management technologies, increase patrols, and foster cross-border cooperation among security agencies. Initiatives like the African Border Programme should be expanded to address weak points in our border systems. "Community Disarmament Programs: Governments should scale up community-centered disarmament programs that offer incentives for the voluntary surrender of weapons. Disarmament must be accompanied by economic empowerment initiatives to address the root causes of insecurity. "Regional Collaboration: Establish regional arms control task forces to share intelligence, coordinate operations, and disrupt trafficking networks. Platforms such as the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA) must be supported to enhance inter-state collaboration. Invest in Youth and Peacebuilding: As part of the African Continental Framework on Youth, Peace, and Security, we must empower young people with opportunities for education, employment, and leadership. Engaging youth as peacebuilders is key to breaking the cycles of violence. "Data and Research: Develop a centralized AU database on arms flows and trafficking patterns. Reliable data will help policymakers design targeted interventions." According to him, the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN), guided by the vision of the One Family Under God campaign, has actively engaged with conflict-affected communities across the country, working to end violence and gun confrontations while fostering lasting peace for sustainable development in Africa. "Numerous civil society organizations are also making dedicated efforts to resolve grievances and address conflicts, contributing to a more peaceful world. GPFN stands ready to collaborate with governments in advocating for disarmament, promoting dialogue, and implementing peacebuilding initiatives. We remain committed to partnering with stakeholders to amplify community voices and build resilient and harmonious societies," he assured. Reverend Hayab envisioned a vision for the future, where peace would reign all over Africa. " Imagine an Africa where schools are not shut down by gunfire, where markets thrive without fear of violence, and where communities are united by hope rather than divided by conflict. This vision is possible if we act decisively to end the proliferation of small arms and light weapons," he predicted. : He challenged African governments to rise to the occasion and reaffirm their commitment to silencing the guns. "Together, we can create a continent where peace reigns, development thrives, and every African lives with dignity," he stressed. Presented by Rev. John Joseph Hayab, Country Director, Global Peace Foundation Nigeria on November 28, 2024 at the Youth Model African Summit, Abuja Nigeria He thanked the Center for Peace Advocacy and Sustainable Development (CEPASD) for inviting Global Peace Foundation Nigeria and other Civil Society Organizations to be part of the collaboration which makes the historic and impactful summit a reality.

Business / Nigerians Didn't Invest Billions Of Dollars In Blending Plant by Jatuski: 3:08pm On Nov 27, 2024 |
*Group Challenges NNPCL Over Claims Of Port Harcourt Refinery A civil society group, Concerned Citizens of Nigeria, has challenged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) over its claims that the Port Harcourt Refinery has commenced operations. At a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, the group alleged that the refinery has been converted into a blending plant and that NNPCL is planning to sell imported, substandard petrol to Nigerians as locally refined fuel. According to a statement signed by its national coordinator, Comrade Mahmud Abdul and five others, the group said the NNPCL's announcement of the refinery's commencement of operations is a ruse designed to deceive Nigerians. The statement claims that the corporation has been shifting deadlines for the completion of the refinery's repairs, leaving Nigerians to suffer from petrol shortages and high prices. The Concerned Citizens of Nigeria also alleged that NNPCL's plan to sell blended products will have a negative impact on engine performance and lifespan. The statement said: "We are worried that NNPCL might have misled the country as it has yet to debunk a report it rather that bought 'Cracked C5 petroleum resins' and blended it with other products like Naphtha to sell to the Nigerian public as its own product. "We invite you to note that this reported commencement of operations comes after shifts in dates on at least seven different occasions. NNPCL’s past ineptitude and unbridled corruption give us concerns that the so-called commencement of operations of the refinery has the markings of a fluke, a ruse designed to make Nigerians stop questioning the eternal deadlines that the organisation set. "The Corporation has now made a bad situation worse by stage managing a resumption of production since it has now been established that NNPCL is not trucking out Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), better known as petrol, from its Port Harcourt Refinery. "Instead, some videos of NNPCL branded trucks that were used to announce that the refinery has resumed operations and started trucking out PMS were mere movie productions to mislead Nigerians. "The Concerned Citizens of Nigeria are aware that the supposed commencement was first flown as a kite by certain media platforms quoting unnamed sources, which was purely a false flag operation to test the response of Nigerians. "The formal speech to the media by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, Femi Soneye announcing the development was only made after the organisation’s top management concluded that there were limited reactions to their flown kite. "Our analysis of this development advised us of two possibilities. The first is that the refinery would be stressed to run for a few weeks before the NNPCL and its Mele Kyari-led management saddle the country with a bill for further repairs. A failure to succumb to this blackmail will result in the facility again becoming moribund. "A second possibility is that NNPCL has not repaired or restored the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) Limited to its heydays. This means that the refinery has been technically downgraded and retooled into a blending plant. "Recall that Nigerians had warned that NNPCL would turn Port Harcourt Refinery into a blending plant. Such concerns were expressed as recently as two months ago in September when some groups faulted the alleged move to convert the Port Harcourt refinery into a blending plant. "The feeler from this latest development has confirmed that this is exactly what is happening, as petroleum products imported into Nigeria by Kyari would now be sold to Nigerians as locally refined fuel. "A true test of whether NNPCL will release petrol from the Port Harcourt Refinery into the market would be the pricing. Mele Kyari’s NNPCL plans to sustain the current price band for petrol since that is the only way they can remain profitable from passing off imported substandard petrol as refined in Port Harcourt. " The group, therefore, called on the Federal Government to investigate the matter and hold those found culpable to account.

Business / NAN Celebrates Commencement Of Work At Port Harcourt Refinery by Jatuski: 8:15pm On Nov 26, 2024 |
The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd under Mele Kyari on the momentous announcement regarding the operational status of the Port Harcourt Refinery. With the commencement of crude oil processing and an impressive installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, the refinery is poised to load 200 trucks daily with locally refined products. This significant development heralds a new era for the Nigerian oil industry and renews the hopes of millions of citizens across the nation. NAN in a statement by it's Chairman, Salihu Suleiman said, the reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery represents a pivotal milestone in Nigeria’s quest for self-sufficiency in petroleum products. For too long, the nation has grappled with the challenges of fuel scarcity and the economic repercussions that accompany it. "The operationalization of this refinery not only promises to alleviate these pressing issues but also serves as a beacon of hope for economic revitalization and job creation, particularly in the northern regions of the country. "The decision to recommence operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery aligns with the Federal Government’s broader strategy to enhance domestic refining capabilities and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products. By harnessing our local resources, Nigeria can bolster its economic resilience and create a more sustainable energy landscape". The Northern Awareness Network recognized that this initiative is not merely about increasing production; it is about fostering a sense of national pride and self-reliance. "The anticipated daily loading of 200 trucks is a testament to the refinery's capacity to meet the growing demand for refined products, ensuring that citizens have access to fuel without the undue burden of high prices or scarcity. This development is particularly crucial for northern Nigeria, where the demand for petroleum products is significant due to the region's agricultural and industrial activities. The availability of locally refined products will enhance productivity, reduce transportation costs, and stimulate economic growth across various sectors. "The reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery also presents an opportunity to address environmental concerns associated with fuel importation and distribution. By refining crude oil domestically, Nigeria can implement more stringent environmental regulations and practices, ultimately leading to a reduction in the carbon footprint associated with transporting fuel across borders. The Northern Awareness Network advocated for sustainable practices that prioritize the health of our communities and the environment. Furthermore, the operationalization of the refinery is expected to generate thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly. From skilled labor in the refinery to ancillary services in logistics and distribution, this initiative will create opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship, particularly for the youth in northern Nigeria. The Northern Awareness Network urges the government to ensure that local communities are actively involved in the refinery's operations and benefit from the economic opportunities it presents. As we celebrate this monumental achievement, the Northern Awareness Network calls upon all stakeholders—government agencies, private sector actors, civil society organizations, and citizens—to work collaboratively towards the successful implementation of this initiative. It is imperative that we foster a spirit of unity, recognizing that the progress of the oil sector is intrinsically linked to the overall development of our nation. We also encourage the Federal Government to prioritize transparency and accountability in the operations of the Port Harcourt Refinery. Regular updates on production levels, distribution logistics, and the impact on local economies will not only build trust among citizens but also ensure that the benefits of this initiative are equitably distributed. The Northern Awareness Network envisions a future where Nigeria stands tall as a self-sufficient nation, capable of meeting its energy needs while fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability. The commencement of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery is a crucial step in that direction. It is a moment of hope, resilience, and renewed commitment to the development of our great nation. "In closing, we express our gratitude to the Federal Government, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, and all those who have worked tirelessly to bring the Port Harcourt Refinery back online. Together, let us embrace this opportunity to transform our oil industry, uplift our communities, and chart a course towards a brighter, more prosperous Nigeria".

Politics / Ebonyi Govt Lacks Direction For Now, Indigenes Tell Governor Nwifuru by Jatuski: 3:22pm On Nov 24, 2024 |
*Warn against attack on opposition figures A governance and accountability group on the platform of Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-Cultural in the Diaspora, (AEISCID) has cautioned Governor Francis Nwifuru-led administration not to stifle the opposition in the state, but rather change the direction of his government from directionless. The Ebonyi indigenes also declared that those who are taking time and pain to point out where the government is not getting it right in governance wishes for the good and success of the administration. The diaspora group was reacting to recent public observations made by the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Ifeanyi Odii, and the counter reactions of the Ebonyi State Government to the Odili's cautions. A statement on Sunday, signed by the AEISCID's president general, Amb. Pascal Oluchukwu, urged the media handlers of the government and a group described as "amorphous cum dark agents (Unwuekumaenyi forum) to display wisdom and restraints "in their stomach-infrastructure-toned media reactions. "The government's media handlers should learn how to address issues raised against it with factual and evidence-based details without necessarily calling names or abusing individuals whose public and even private accomplishments they can never attain. "In actual sense, we believe that those who are taking time and pain to point out where the government is not getting it right in governance wishes for the good and success of the administration. They must therefore not be regarded as hopeless, sore and bitter losers whose ideas should never count or be counted. Respected Ebonyians like the PDP candidate, Odii, popularly known as Anyichuks is an accomplished industrialist well known in Nigeria and beyond for his entrepreneurial spirit and achievements. "Therefore, to describe such an accomplished and outstanding Ebonyian like Odii- a man who Ebonyians massively voted for, outing in quest for the number one seat in the State in the manner and tone the rather faceless urchins operating under an amorphous platform like 'Unwuekumenyi' did is reprehensible and condemnable." The statement also warned against embarking on projects that has no direct bearing on the lives of Ebonyi people. According to Oluchukwu, most of the policies and programmes of the Nwifuru-led government seem largely uncoordinated and directionless. Like the PDP carefully noted, the government merely seems to be in a hurry to impress the rich through its profligate spendings, not only neglecting the peculiar needs, interests and welfare of the poor masses they were elected to serve. Sadly, this is even in the midst of the very excruciating poverty and economic downturn that Nigeria is currently facing. "We wish to finally caution that the government of Rt. Hon. Nwifuru not tow the inglorious path of stifling the voices of opposition no matter how reasonable or unreasonable they may think such views may sound. The reason is because democracy as a system of government allows for plurality of opinions and the voice of oppositions is crucial to redirecting any government in power to do things right and better for its people. "To this end therefore, we demand an apology from the so-called amorphous 'Unwuekumenyi' forum on the person and personality of Anyichuks just as we call for caution against such inflammatory comments in the future. The interest of a better future for our dear State should supersede prebendal and clannish interests as this group and Spokespersons of the Ebonyi State government tried to levitatingly represent." Specifically, the statement added: "AEISCID has always maintained that the airport project was not on a priority list of a poverty-ridden State like ours. Moreso, having been part of the previous administration and even played crucial roles in approving funds request for the white elephant airport project. "We expected the Nwifuru-led administration to take note of the salient points made by the group and indeed, other well-meaning Ebonyians and accordingly adjust it's policy direction in a manner that it can positively impact the common man rather than lavishing our scare resources on the already rich, thriving and expired political stakeholders who have been ripping the State off since the return of democracy."

Politics / Your Criticisms On Tinubu’s Foreign Loan Baseless, Arewa Group Knocks Atiku by Jatuski: 9:16am On Nov 23, 2024 |
The Arewa Professionals for Democracy and Development (APDD) has cautioned Nigerian former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar over his recent criticisms on the loan request from President Bola Tinubu. Recall that the National Assembly had approved a $2.2 billion foreign loan request from President Tinubu. This development was greeted with many reactions from Nigerians. One of the critique of this foreign loan request is the 2023 People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who raised concerns that the loan would be embezzled by the government. In quick reaction to the former Vice president, the APDD said Atiku’s criticism of the borrowing's approval mirrors the fitful twitching of an expired creature in its final throes. The group in a statement signed by its President, Engr. Moses Odaudu said Atiku's criticism of the loan ignores key aspects of economic management and development. The group said it is important to scrutinise government actions, it is equally important to consider the broader context and potential benefits of these loans. “He blatantly trivialised the strategic intent behind the loans by asserting that they are "bone-crushing" and bring "insufferable pressure" on the economy whereas when properly managed and invested in critical infrastructure and development projects, the loans can stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and improve public services. “We believe what Atiku did was to project his value on the incumbent government with the implication that he concluded the loans would be embezzled because that is what would have happened if he were the president. “This is even as President Tinubu has assured that his government will ensure transparency and accountability in using these funds, which should have been Atiku’s focus instead of the infantile tantrums he threw in the public opinion space. “This is why we ask the former vice president to differentiate between constructive criticism aimed at improving governance and baseless accusations that can undermine public trust in Nigeria”, the group said. Odaudu further noted that they noticed that Atiku’s criticism overlooked the complexities of international finance and the strategic decisions involved in securing favourable terms of borrowing, which caused him to dwell on the comparison of exchange rates while suggesting that the loans are poorly negotiated. He said only such mischief made him deny the administration's efforts to boost revenue collection through reforms in the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Customs as part of a broader strategy to enhance fiscal stability. “In his desperate drive for public validation, it is tragic that Atiku unashamedly references something that should be forgotten by saying the administration of President Obasanjo, under which he was vice president, took the country out of foreign indebtedness, without telling Nigerians the truth. “We challenge Atiku to deny that he was not a beneficiary of the commission on the loan repayment shared by Obasanjo’s economic team, which the former vice president once falsely claimed to have headed. “We conclude by urging Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to accept that the trauma of serial loss at the polls and his advanced age imply that he no longer possesses the mental acuity he had for analysing national issues a couple of decades ago. “Atiku must thus admit to himself that it is time to quit politics and refrain from intervening in national issues so that he does not allow his diminished capacity to lead some Nigerians astray”, the group added.
