The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Anambra Branch has called off the indefinite strike embarked upon to protest the kidnap of Dr Stephen Ezeh, an Ihiala based private practitioner.

The NMA in a statement signed by Dr. Princeston Okam and Dr Ifeanyi Obiaeli its Chairman and Secretary respectively on Sunday, said the decision followed the release of Dr Ezeh from captivity of kidnappers.

The NMA also urged Gov. Chukwuma Soludo to declare a state of emergency on security in the state.

It said the growing insecurity and kidnapping was crippling the economy and health care delivery in the State.

It would be recalled that Ezeh was kidnapped in Ihiala on August 15, following which the NMA directed members to down tools on Aug. 22 after issuing a prior 48-hour ultimatum.

The NMA told members to return to work and appreciated everyone who contributed in whatever way towards securing the release of Ezeh.

“The total and indefinite strike action called by NMA Anambra Branch to protest the kidnap of our member Dr Stephen Ezeh is hereby called off following his release.

“Clinical services resume 08:00 hours Sunday August 25.

Nairaland / General / Arewa Youth Group Holds Solidarity Rally In Support Of Tinubu, Kyari by Jatuski: 9:11pm On Aug 22
The Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership (AYAGL) in conjunction with several Civil Society Organizations, (CSOs) support groups on Wednesday, carried out a peaceful solidarity rally in Abuja to declare their total and unalloyed support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Mele Kolo Kyari.

The support rally was on the premise of several calls for President Tinubu to relief the NNPCL boss of his position on grounds of challenges facing the oil sector, a call some viewed as subtle efforts targeted at President Tinubu by enemies of the country who are committed to fighting back following the removal of the fuel subsidy by this administration.

Addressing journalists on the sideline of the peaceful support rally, the leader of the rally and Speaker of the AYAGL Ambassador Abdul DanBature said, the solidarity rally was basically to urge President Tinubu to disregard such calls as it is the handiwork of enemies of his administration.

" As a group committed to good leadership, we have seen a capable hand in the person of Mele Kyari and we will do whatever it takes legitimately to support him to continue to achieve success in the oil sector," he stressed.

" Kyari's scorecard is impressive, and his efforts have not gone unnoticed. However, with great success comes great envy, and Kyari is now facing opposition from forces of evil who seek to tarnish his reputation.

Also, the Speaker said, the solidarity rally is to further urge Mr Kyari to continue the good works of repositioning the NNPCL towards greatness, adding that he should not be discouraged by calls for his sack by faceless individuals.

" For us, we are committed to good governance and will support any organization be it government or individual that is providing good governance and that is why we declared our support for Mele Kyari and to assure him publicly that we will always support him" Danbature said.

Nairaland / General / Former Anambra Guber Aspirant, Okoli Urges Govt To Address Hardship by Jatuski: 2:52am On Aug 22
A former governorship aspirant in Anambra State, Chief Rommy Okoli, has called on politicians and governments at all levels to be responsible and responsive to the needs of the masses when making their policies.

The Elder Statesman made the call at a news briefing in Awka as part of the activities to mark his birthday.

The Messenger as he is fondly called, said the level of hunger and poverty among the people is worrisome, noting that it demands an urgent and deliberate policy to address them.

He appealed to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to make the country's refineries functional to address the problem of petroleum supply and price induced inflation.

He said Nigeria is richly endowed that no citizen should be in poverty, if they were properly harnessed and prudently managed.

Okoli also expressed concerns over the security situation across the country and urged the security agencies to rise to the occasion.

"The high price of fuel is making it difficult for free movement of persons, goods and services and people cannot do their business effectively, farmers cannot go to farm for fear of being abducted, these are twin factors the government should work on immediately.

"The arms of government at various levels should collaborate to make Nigeria work, it is not enough for them to be living in affluence and opulence while the majority of the populace are wallowing in poverty and squalor," he said.

Okoli, a former executive chairman of Nnewi South LGA said the Supreme Court judgment which granted financial autonomy to councils was a welcome development.

He pointed out that the financial autonomy will empower the Local Government Areas to be effective.

"We all know that local government areas are the closest to the people, with the financial autonomy, councils will become more proactive and capable of taking care of the immediate needs of their people.

"I am calling for peace in Nigeria, we need peaceful co-existence of all the ethnic nationalities in Nigeria which would engender and quicken development," he said.

Politics / NAN Cautions Reps Dep Speaker Over Unwarranted Confrontations With Governor Otti by Jatuski: 6:24pm On Aug 20
The Northern Awareness Network (NAN), a group dedicated to the promotion of collective progress and harmonious coexistence within the various states of Nigeria, has condemned recent actions taken by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

NAN in a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Salihu Suleiman, said, it has come to their attention that Hon. Kalu has engaged in confrontational activities with the current Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, a course of action, which they felt does not only threaten to create discord within a region that desperately seeks unity, but also undermines the legitimate efforts of the Abia State Government, which is steadfastly working towards revitalizing various sectors of the state.

The group averred that, as a representative of the people, Hon. Kalu must recognize that his actions carry significant repercussions for the constituents he serves and urged him to reconsider his approach and to prioritize the responsibilities that come with his legislative role, adding that the people of Abia State deserve representation grounded in constructive dialogue and cooperation, not in divisive rhetoric and unnecessary grandstanding.

"The ongoing administration is committed to reinforcing the foundations of development in the state. It is imperative that all stakeholders, including Hon. Kalu, channel their energies toward supporting this vision rather than detracting from it.

"The record of Hon. Kalu's performance in the legislature has been a source of concern among constituents, with critiques emphasizing his perceived inadequacies and lapses in duty. We implore him to focus on improving his legislative performance and rebuilding his reputation, which has suffered considerably due to actions that have cast disrepute upon the integrity of the House".

NAN said, the citizens of Abia State are looking for effective leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people over personal conflicts, and it is essential for leaders to demonstrate resilience and fortitude in challenging times.

"As a political novice who is still finding his footing within the complexities of national governance, it would serve Hon. Kalu well to heed our caution. Rather than engaging in confrontations that distract from real governance issues, he should work diligently to recover his relevance in the House of Representatives.

The path to effective representation is paved with collaboration, mutual respect, and a genuine commitment to the public good.

"We would like to bring this statement to a decisive conclusion by unequivocally warning that should Hon. Kalu persist in his disruptive confrontation with the governor, the Northern Awareness Network does not hesitate to galvanize the citizens of Abia State to rise against efforts that threaten their well-being. We are prepared to initiate a comprehensive recall effort to ensure that the voices of the voters are heard, and that those who serve them are held accountable for their actions.

"We beseech Hon. Benjamin Kalu to allow Abia State to thrive under its current popular administration, which is working tirelessly to advance the state's interests. A united front is paramount for the progress and prosperity of our communities. Let us work together to build a brighter future for all Nigerians" the statement added.

Health / Resident Doctors Protest Continued Detention Of Ganiyat 7 Months After Kidnap by Jatuski: 5:26pm On Aug 20
Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Centre have appealed for an urgent and unconditional release of their colleague, Dr Ganiyat Popoola.

The doctors held solidarity walk around the Akammiri permanent site of the teaching hospital in Nnewi, with visits to some wards and ended it with a prayer session at the main gate.

They bore placards with varying inscriptions including ‘’Free Ganiyat From Kidnappers', ‘Save Ganiyat’, ’Help Save Ganiyat' among others.

Dr Chiemezie Agbanu, President ARD-NAUTH who spoke to journalists, said the solidarity walk was to join voices with the rest of Nigerians especially doctors to call for the freedom of Ganiyat from kidnappers den after over seven months.

Agbanu who was represented by Dr Adeyemo Adebiyi, chairman ARD-NAUTH Strategy and Mobilisation Committee, said urgent steps should be taken to stop the spate of kidnap of doctors.

This solidarity walk is to call for unconditional release of one of our colleagues, Dr Ganiyat who was kidnapped at the National Health Centre Kaduna and still held in captivity about seven months and 20 days ago.

“It looks like doctors are now an endangered species, they are people who care for the environment and community.

“Once doctors are living in this type of danger, it means the health sector will collapse and brain drain will increase,” he said.

Also speaking, Dr Onyinye Ifezue, 1st Vice President ARD-NAUTH said they were worried about the mental, psychological and physical health of the woman who had been in the captivity of unknown gunmen.

Ifezue said Ganiyat's case was worse because she was a woman with numerous vulnerabilities and pleaded with the authorities and captors alike to free the doctor.

“We are worried because we are doctors and the victim is a woman. Only God knows what she must have been passing through in the hands of those kidnappers for almost eight months.

“We know that if she was a politician, more would have been some to rescue her, she has been exposed to physical violation, mental and psychological torture as a result of being sroersted from her family,” she said.

On his part, Dr Nnaemeka Sibeudu, 2nd Vice President ARD-NAUTH said doctors were condemning kidnapping of any Nigerian irrespective of their trade as it was a violation of their freedom to movement.

Sibeudu commended all those involved in the process of securing Ganiyat's release for the efforts they had made and wondered why the victim was still being held by her captors.

“We want to call on the Federal Government, the National Assembly, the security agencies and governors to ensure Ganiyat is release immediately and unconditionally,’’ he said.

The Civil Society Members of the SAP lll State Steering Committee of the Kaduna Open Government Partnership (OGP) has expressed deep concern over the detention of Abdullahi Yunusa, a student leader and dedicated civil society member, who has been in custody since August 2, 2024, following a social media post made during the #EndBadGovernance protest in Kaduna State.

This was contained in a statement signed by six leaders of different civil society organisations (CSOs), made available to our correspondent in Kaduna on Tuesday August 20, 2024.

"We recognise and respect the important role security plays in maintaining peace and order in our society. However, we also recognise that every citizen should be treated fairly and just, especially in cases where a young person's future is at stake," it said.

According to the statement titled, "Public Statement: A Call to Remain Resolute In the Case of Abdullahi Yunusa" the CSOs said that Yunusa has a strong record as a civil society member known for his positive contribution and kind heart in his involvement in the Open Government Partnership and other Civil Society Initiatives.

"We are confident that Abdullahi has never engaged in any activities that would incite unrest or harm our society. This is why we have taken his detention seriously, as it raises significant concern about civil liberties," it added.

They said that in light of these concerns, "we have formally reached out to the OGP Kaduna Government Co-chair and other stakeholders, appealing for their urgent intervention in addressing and resolving this matter.

"We urge the authorities to ensure that due process is followed and that Abdullahi Yunusa’s rights are upheld," the statement said.

Politics / Northern Forum Tackles Sule Lamido Over Calls For Matawalle's Removal by Jatuski: 9:29am On Aug 20
The Northern Integrity and Security Forum (NISF) has described recent remarks made by former Foreign Affairs Minister and Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, calling for the removal of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle as unfortunate.

According to the security forum, such calls coming amid the troubling climate surrounding the abduction of the Emir of Gobir of Gatawa District in Sokoto State, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa and his son, is not only ill-informed, but also irresponsible, unstatesman and alarmingly disingenuous.

The statement from the forum which was signed by the Chairman Tijjani Auwalu said, it is crucial to affirm that while the situation in Sokoto and other parts of Northern Nigeria is of utmost concern, the challenges faced are national in scale, engulfing various facets of the society—from urban centers to rural localities.

It stressed that Lamido's attempt to limit Matawalle's responsibilities solely to Sokoto or the North, is a gross misrepresentation of the reality that security is an ongoing national issue, requiring collective efforts and shared accountability across government tiers.

"The timing and target of Lamido's critique raises significant questions regarding his underlying motives. It is disconcerting that Lamido chose to single out Matawalle, a junior minister, while overlooking Badaru Abubakar, the senior Defence Minister, who coincidentally, shares the same home state of Jigawa with Lamido.

"We must ask: why direct unrelenting attacks towards a loyal ally of President Tinubu, while seemingly absolving a senior counterpart? Such selective criticism indicates a strategic maneuver aimed at undermining the political framework supporting our President, rather than a genuine concern for the nation's security.

"Moreover, the contrasting nature of Lamido's recent expressions of empathy for a singular Emir in captivity stands in stark contradiction to his silence throughout the years of suffering endured by ordinary Zamfara communities and other ordinary Nigerians". The group said.

The forum noted that thousands have fallen victim to heinous acts of abduction, torture, extortion, and displacement over the past two decades and the absence of Lamido's voice in addressing these widespread tragedies all this while, raises concerns about his commitment to empathy and meaningful advocacy for the Nigerian people.

"This singular attack on Matawalle cannot be detached from the backdrop of emerging investigations of Bashir Hadejiya, linked to serious criminal activities including, terrorism sponsorship, gun running, and cross border crimes," the.forum stated.

It added, "The growing panic among certain political figures, including those aligned with Lamido, reflects a desperate attempt to destabilize the current administration as these investigations unfold. NISF expects that as this inquiry progresses, more personalities with dubious affiliations will be brought to light, further revealing the motivations behind such orchestrated smear campaigns.

"It bears noting that the relentless criticism directed at Matawalle is indicative of a concerted effort by a faction of inconsequential northern politicians—of which Lamido is a prominent member—to weaken the integrity and growing influence of President Tinubu in the North".

NISF posited that Matawalle's unwavering allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu embodies the support necessary for a resilient governance and political structure. Hence, these attacks serve as a testament to Matawalle's reliability and dependability, which must be subdued if these politicians wish to see President Tinubu rendered vulnerable.

"We solemnly caution that in the fullness of time, the extent of involvement of several figures in the crimes of Bashir Hadejiya would be exposed. The ongoing investigation into Bashir Hadejiya's criminal activities will inevitably blow open the cover of those whose actions contradict their public personas".

The forum therefore, urged President Tinubu to remain steadfast and resolute against attempts to incite division within his solid support base in the North, adding that the loyalty embodied by figures such as Minister Matawalle, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, is indispensable to the integrity of the current administration and national security.

"The NISF stands firm in our commitment to supporting our President's efforts of fortifying the Northern region's security and integrity. We shall not waver in promoting a united front against any efforts to undermine our collective strength in pursuing a safer and more prosperous Nigeria" the statement added.

Politics / Edo 2024: A Simple Choice For Progress by Jatuski: 3:59pm On Aug 17
By CHRIS MUSTAPHA NWAOKOBIA Jnr

The Edo State Governorship contest has been intriguing since 1999, but the 2024 election appears to be the simplest and most predictable. The three leading candidates are Monday Okpebholo (APC), Olumide Akpata (Labour Party), and Asue Ighodalo (PDP).

Monday Okpebholo is mute, unable to articulate his plans and vision for the state. His campaign is spearheaded by Senator Adams Oshiomole, making it seem like a surrogate governorship. His manifesto is a poorly doctored version of Pastor Ize-Iyamu's 2020 manifesto, showing his unpreparedness for the office.

Olumide Akpata has nice jingles and dance steps but lacks policy and programmatic substance. He joined the Labour Party to ride the Obidient Movement's momentum but has failed to present a clear vision for Edo State. His campaign focuses on criticizing the PDP and Governor Godwin Obaseki rather than presenting his own plans.

Asue Ighodalo (A.I) is the clear choice for Edo State. He presented his manifesto, "PROSPERITY FOR ALL," first, articulating his vision, programs, and policies. He has consulted with Edolites worldwide, pledging to bring his experience and knowledge to take Edo State to a new level of progress and prosperity.

A.I has a boisterous CV and illustrious resume, having chaired Blue Chip Companies and a successful Bank. He knows how to raise funds to fulfill his promises without stressing the people. His campaign mantra, "ASUE/OGIE GO DO AM," reflects his capability and credibility.

Edo Voters have made their choice, recognizing A.I as the most qualified, competent, capable, and credible candidate. His candidacy meets the quest for Justice, Equity, and Fairness in Edo State.

In conclusion, the choice for Edo State's progress is simple: Asue Ighodalo. May God bless Edo State and grant the people the candor and competency to make the right choice on September 21, 2024.

Crime / Trans-border Suspect: Ohanaeze Youth Hail Security Agencies’ Collaboration by Jatuski: 12:54pm On Aug 17
Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has hailed the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian security forces.

The Igbo group spoke in reaction to the recent arrest of A Nigerian who specialises in money laundering and other transnational crimes.

It would be recalled that the man, whose name was given as one Bashir Hadejiya, was arrested by the Nigerian police, following intelligence reports on smuggling large catche of weapons along with large bars of gold believed to have been stolen from the Central Bank of Libya.

He was also linked to the recent EndBadGovernance protest, and confessed to sponsoring a large number of youth who participated in the just concluded #EndBadGovernance Protests in Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa and Abuja.

Reacting through a statement made available to journalists, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said the arrest was the fruit of the deep collaboration among the security agencies.

Nnabuike, who said the arrest was of great concern, stressed that, “while we commend the police for the feat, we must state that no stone should be left un-turned in unearthing those behind this trans-border criminal activities.

“His arrest is no doubt an eloquent testimony to the fruitful collaboration and capacity of the Nigerian security forces, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, who have all shown serious commitment to restore security across the country.

“We must, however, note that his confession is mind boggling and should not be treated with kid’s gloves. This is a great opportunity to unravel the cabal that has been destabilizing the country, especially the North, security wise.

“There is no doubt that Bashir Hadeja is not alone; just as he confessed, this is a trans-border crime, and they have a ring. Their activities constitute a serious threat to the existence of Nigeria and this is why every effort must be made to identify his collaborators. When they are found, they must be brought to book.

“This also confirms our earlier fears when we kicked against the EndBadGovernance protest. We knew that as good as the intentions may sound, there were undercurrent dealings which could jeopardise the overall interest of the country. Our fears were justified considering the wanton destruction of properties, especially across the Northern part of the country. Hadeja’s confessional statement has also buttressed the fears.

“Having said this, our utmost fear right now lies with Hadejiya's confessions, particularly regarding his connections to influential figures in the political sphere, including allegations linking him to a former Director of the Department of State Security Service (DSS). This should worry every patriotic Nigerian.

“It is imperative to urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be mindful of some elements who are hell bent on discrediting his government and all those around him. The president should be watchful of such mischief makers who do not mean well for his government but are agents of destabilization.

“On our part, we urge the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, to continue with their collaborative efforts, which is bearing visible fruits. They should not be distracted by enemies of state, who hide under some faceless names and groups to disparage the efforts of the government and the security agencies.

“As we urge Nigerians to be more vigilant, we look forward to a comprehensive investigation of Hadejiya and his collaborators. There should be no sacred cow."

Nairaland / General / Ashiofu: Nigeria Thorough-bred Sports Professional Administrator Par Excellence by Jatuski: 10:04pm On Aug 15
By; KANAYO JEREMIAH

It was the great Mahatma Gandhi that enthused wholly that, "Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle, and a victory."

Indeed, the path of one of Nigeria's finest Sports professionals, Mrs Amaka Ashiofu, has been that of intense leadership disposition, humility and service to the nation through the instrumental application of using Sports to touch lives in leaps and bound.

Right from the 90s till the very moment, she has remained dedicated to serve her fatherland as a distinguished Federal Civil Servant, not knowing that many are watching her.

Her track record of resilience and undaunted efforts, in the past years as a known disciplined Sports Officer, back in 1999 have gone unnoticed, though she doesn't like limelight.

From when it was National Sports Commission to Ministry of Youth and Sports, back to Ministry of Sports Development, most stakeholders, including her immediate colleagues who had worked and those still working with her in various departments of the country's sporitng sector have watched her with top notch admiration.

Nigeria's sporting media practitioners (respected Journalists) have equally held her in high esteem as she takes her work as Sports Woman of Repute seriously without wanting to be in public light, while being posted to carry out her duties from one department to another within the current Ministry of Sports development.

The departments she had worked under the ministry with direct contact and services to the young and energetic Nigerians include Grassroots, National Sports Festival and Para-Sports, Coaching and Training, and Federation and Elite Athletes.

Mrs Ashiofu has continued to prioritise details to every aspect of her official dealings while she worked with great minds who were her superiors, supervisors, bosses including Directors and Director-Generals, Permanent Secretaries in her different offices under the Ministry of Sports development or as it was in its previous nomenclature.

Time after time, she grew through, from one level of available Civil Sevice position to another with Sports always etched in all her promotions.

From 1999 when she was officially confirmed in the Sports environment, Mrs Ashiofu transited from Executive to Officer's cadre in the Sports Ministry till her current position as a Deputy Director whose heights continue to flourish.

Ashiofu's deserved accolades by both high-ranking officials of the Sports Ministry speaks volume of her dexterity and towering sense of purpose in honour and simplest approach to the core.

The memory of her glow even when she deservedly held sway as the Acting Director Federation and Elite Athletes Department (FEAD) from when the former Minister of Youth and Sports development, Chief Sunday Dare was in charge with Mr. Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar as Permanent Secretary was evident as her advice and sense of outstanding personality witnessed one of Nigeria's best ever outing at All Africa Games, now African Games in Ghana.

Certainly, Mrs Amaka Ashiofu is "a go through" in sports-related operations as far as the Federal Ministry of Sports is concerned. Her touch of Sports experience and numerous qualifications is what the Sports ministry will always find useful and resourceful, virtually all Sports Federation Presidents undeniably attest to these and more.

Moreso, and just like another great philosopher, David Maister, puts it, "Professionalism is not a label you give yourself - it's a description you hope others will apply to you".

Therefore, let the good work of Ashiofu continue to reverberate now and always.

Nairaland / General / Bashir Hadejiya's Arrest: Turning Point In Nigeria's Security Landscape - AYCF by Jatuski: 8:02pm On Aug 15
The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has expressed delight over the arresting of Bashir Hadejiya, a suspect implicated in treason.

According to a statement issued by the President General of the forum Yerima Shettima, "the apprehension of individuals such as Bashir Hadejiya not only protects our borders but also underscores the importance of vigilance in combating increasingly sophisticated networks of crime and terrorism. The nexus between local and international criminal enterprises calls for a fortified response from all stakeholders to dismantle these dangerous operations."

It said that the arrest addresses a matter of grave national concern, yet one which provides an avenue for unity and enhanced commitment to shared future.

"Our recent collective focus on the security of the Nigerian state has been underscored dramatically by the arrest of Bashir Hadejiya, a suspect implicated in treason, gun-running, and other transnational crimes.

"This operation, orchestrated by our diligent security agencies, represents a remarkable achievement in safeguarding the integrity and sovereignty of Nigeria.

"We commend the Nigerian Police and the myriad security agencies involved in this extraordinary success. Your commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of our communities is exemplary," it said.

It added that, "The confession of Bashir Hadejiya has unveiled a disturbing nexus of criminality that transcends national boundaries, posing significant threats not only to Nigeria but to the broader West African region and beyond. His involvement in the gun-running trade and the smuggling of gold pilfered from the Central Bank of Libya underscores a perilous partnership with international criminal networks.

"These entities do not merely undermine our national integrity; they provide the very resources necessary for exacerbating terrorism and instability across West Africa—a situation that represents a severe affront to our sovereignty and a pronounced invasion of our peace.

"The implications of Hadejiya's criminal endeavors are profound and far-reaching. Reports surrounding his arrest paint a grim portrait of a culprit enmeshed in a web of illicit activities, including arms trafficking, money laundering, and the facilitation of terrorism. Such actions should function as a harbinger of concern for citizens and lawmakers alike.

"Hadejiya's confessions illustrate a shadowy underbelly that not only threatens the stability of Nigeria but also serves as a bellwether for the broader security landscape, as these criminal networks operate beyond geographical constraints. The ripple effects of their operations have generated an environment rife with violence, fear, and socio-economic decay—equally damaging to individual nations and to the wider international community.

"Compounding these alarming developments is Hadejiya's admission of funding and orchestrating protests, notably the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations that erupted across Nigeria.

"While the original intent of such protests—calling for accountability and reform—may be noble, the infiltration of criminal elements into these movements poses a serious danger. It has led to the corruption of legitimate dissent, precipitating chaos and disorder across our communities. The stark reality that vulnerable populations can be manipulated in their moments of frustration reveals the exploitation of genuine grievances by those with ulterior motives.

"This manipulation is particularly evident in the recent disturbances across northern Nigeria, where young demonstrators, driven by long-standing frustrations, were co-opted and funded by criminal conspirators intent on advancing their own chaotic agendas.

"The gravity of the implications of Bashir Hadejiya's actions cannot be overstated. His confessions, particularly regarding his connections to influential figures in the political sphere, including allegations linking him to a former Director of the Department of State Security Service (DSS), reveal deeper, systemic failings within our governance structures.

"These connections are not merely incidental; they indicate a troubling state of affairs in which the very institutions tasked with ensuring the safety and integrity of the nation appear to harbor, or at the very least tolerate, criminal enterprises. This complicity—or, at best, the negligence of duty—exposes a vulnerability in our political and security frameworks that must not be ignored.

"In essence, the cross-national implications illuminated by Hadejiya's confession provide ample justification for alarm.

"The interconnected nature of global criminal networks means that incidents of this sort cannot be treated as isolated cases. Rather, they form part of a larger tapestry of chaos that jeopardizes national security and regional stability. The implications ripple outward, threatening democratic processes and undermining the rule of law. The ability of individuals like Hadejiya to not only navigate but exploit the gaps within our governance structures serves as a clarion call for more stringent measures to ensure accountability and transparency in our political arenas.

"To stem the tide of these insidious influences, it is imperative that we remain vigilant and proactive. Policymakers, security agencies, and civil society must engage in robust discourse on how to fortify our political institutions against the encroachment of organized crime. This includes enhanced accountability mechanisms to ensure that political actors are not only transparent in their dealings but also held liable for any complicity in illegal activities.

"The integrity of our democratic processes and the safety of our communities depend on a comprehensive approach that addresses the multifaceted challenges presented by figures like Bashir Hadejiya.

"In light of these events, we take this opportunity to remind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the numerous communiqués and calls urging him to acknowledge the ongoing machinations against his administration driven by malicious elements, both within and outside our borders. These tactics are directed not just at the President, but at his steadfast supporters and defenders.

"They aim to sow discord and factionalism among the ranks of those who support this administration, thereby rendering it vulnerable to subversive takeover.

"We laud the unwavering commitment of President Tinubu's security team, specifically praising the resolute efforts of key figures such as National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar, and Minister of Defence Bello Mohammed Matawalle.

"Their tireless work is essential in our collective fight against these threats. To bolster our national security further, we advocate for empowering these defenders—providing them with the tools, resources, and authority necessary to navigate complex national security challenges. It is only through a well-resourced and supported security team that we can expect to confront the evolving threats that loom over our democracy.

"The revelations surrounding Hadejiya's criminal affiliations underscore a pressing need for a united front against the forces that threaten our sovereignty and stability. As citizens, we must advocate for reforms that prioritize transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct. Failure to address these issues will not only permit the continuation of this dangerous status quo but also set a precedent for other criminal actors to exploit vulnerabilities within our political systems. The time for action is now, as the stakes could not be higher for Nigeria, West Africa, and the international community at large.

"It is imperative that we signal our intent to take the necessary actions against those who manipulate the socio-political landscape for personal gain. Those who assist in camouflaging their ill-intentions under the guise of political involvement must be held accountable. The implications of Hadejiya's confession are crucial; his links to political figures—both in the North and South—demand scrutiny and refusing to convict these corrupt partnerships only hampers our national unity and progress.

"We insist on a thorough investigation of all individuals involved in this nefarious enterprise. We reiterate our support for President Tinubu and his administration in their efforts to maintain national security and social cohesion. Let us remain vigilant and united against any entities that seek to undermine the stability of Nigeria and, by extension, the wellbeing of her people."

Politics / Northern Stakeholders Urge NASS To Investigate Ikenga Led Disbanded Committee by Jatuski: 8:03pm On Aug 13
Northern Stakeholders Consultative Forum (NSCF) has called on the leadership of the National Assembly particularly the House of Representatives to investigate the Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga led disbanded committee.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna on Tuesday, the stakeholders forum demanded immediate action regarding the troubling allegations involving Honorable Ikenga, a member of the House of Representatives on issues which borders on accountability and transparency which are not merely legal requirements; they are moral imperatives essential to the functioning of democracy.

A text of the briefing which was read by the spokesperson Comrade Ali Mohammed Sani in the presence of the convener Yerima Shettima, the Secretary General Comrade Danjuma Paul and patron of the forum Abdulazeez Suleiman, the group said the recent misconduct alleged against Hon. Ikenga threatens to undermine the trust of the Nigerian populace and its elected officials and the legislative framework that governs our national affairs.

The Northern Stakeholders Consultative Forum (NSCF) in partnership with 72 other organizations said they are united to advocate for accountability, transparency, and ethical governance in Nigeria, hence it is an imperative moment that characterized not just by concern, but by urgency to address the alarming recent developments concerning the conduct of Hon. Ikenga.

"As a group, we are committed to uphold the principles of democracy. Our mission is to ensure that those who have been elected to serve the people adhere unwaveringly to their responsibilities. This is because accountability lies at the very heart of a functioning democracy; when representatives err or engage in misconduct, it is the duty of us all to highlight these discrepancies and demand justice.)".

The stakeholders forum noted that in recent weeks, Nigeria has been enveloped in significant turmoil, particularly within the energy sector, stressing that such tumultuous climate, exacerbated by the ongoing tensions between the Dangote Refinery and regulatory bodies, compelled them to reflect on the implications of the actions or inactions of our lawmakers.

"In the light of our commitment to promoting transparency, we have undertaken an investigative approach regarding the recent crisis surrounding the joint committee tasked with overseeing the oil industry. Reports indicate that this committee has been disbanded, primarily due to egregious and unscrupulous conduct attributed to one of its co-chairman, Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga.

"Accusations against Hon. Ikenga suggest that he also solicited for a financial bribe and according to reports from the Daily Nigerian, Hon. Ikenga has further been accused of boasting about his alleged payment of $1.7 million to secure his committee chairmanship—a claim that raises profound concerns about the integrity of our legislative processes.

"Our ongoing investigations have unearthed deeply troubling patterns of behavior. As recently as July 4, 2024, unusual activities were reported around the House of Representatives premises. Subsequent inquiries unveiled that private investigators had been engaged by Hon. Ikenga, purportedly to gather information for the purpose of blackmail against the Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abass, as well as the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Kalu Benjamin".

The group averred that such actions appeared to be aimed at assembling compromising evidence to intimidate the House of Representative leadership into allowing his continued leadership of the Committee on Petroleum (Downstream).

"In our quest for truth, we earnestly call upon the leadership of the House of Representatives to procure and review the CCTV footage from the House complex on the mentioned date. We are confident that these recordings will validate the claims, revealing various meetings held between Hon. Ikenga and the private investigators within his office premises.

"Alarmingly, it seems Hon. Ikenga sought to obscure his conversations by augmenting the volume of a television, mistakenly believing it would mask their dialogues from surveillance devices. However, we assert that these security measures successfully captured their exchanges, laying bare the malicious intent behind their actions.

"Moreover, we have uncovered indications that Hon. Ikenga harbors aspirations to cultivate deleterious information about Deputy Speaker Kalu, whom he views as a potential rival. This rivalry appears to stem from the perception that Deputy Speaker Kalu operates as a facilitator for funds from the Dangote Refinery. Such dynamics illustrate a troubling environment, where personal ambitions overshadow civic duty.

"The unsettling reality we confront today reflects an Assembly that has deviated from the ideals of service and integrity—an institution where the corrupted ethos has permeated the legislative framework.

"The allegations against Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga underscore a disconcerting narrative of exploitation and corruption, which is detrimental to the trust bestowed upon our legislative representatives. In the interest of restoring public confidence and institutional integrity, we implore the Speaker of the House to initiate a comprehensive investigation into these serious allegations, particularly concerning the activities of the disbanded committee".

The stakeholders posited that the broader implications of such behavior if left unchecked poses a significant risk to our democratic foundations and must be addressed with utmost severity, while urging all stakeholders to embrace the collective responsibility in the matter, adding that, "We advocate for a transparent, accountable, and ethical legislative process, one that genuinely serves the Nigerian populace and reinstates faith in our democracy.

"Let us work together for the greater good, ensuring that the actions of our leaders are reflective of the values we espouse as a nation, the integrity of our democratic institutions is imperative to ensuring that the will of the people prevails. It is the duty of our representatives to act decisively, firmly ensuring that accountability is upheld at all levels. We must collectively strive for a transparent, ethical, and accountable legislative process that ultimately benefits the Nigerian populace".

Nairaland / General / Global Peace Foundation Nigeria Urges Youths To Shun Drugs, Substance Abuse by Jatuski: 6:08pm On Aug 13
This call was made in a one-day Youth sensitization program tagged “No to Drugs” which was organized by the Hayin Banki Peace and Reconciliation Committee in partnership with Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN) and Health Justice Development and Peace (HJDP). The event which took place on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 held at the Bajju Hall in Hayin Banki, Kawo in Kaduna North LGA of Kaduna state had over One hundred and fifty people in attendance, majority of whom are young people.

Laying foundation for the conversation, Rev. Fr Sixtus Onuh Ladi of HJDP said it is rather unfortunate that the present generation more than any other before it, is largely characterized by drugs and substance abuse.

He said “we are allowing things that human hands have created to destroy us thereby throwing the future of our families and societies in doubt.

“The convergence according to him is a forum for a heart to heart conversation on the way forward considering that drugs and substance abuse have destroyed and is still destroying a lot of destinies.

In his opening remarks, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, the Country Director of GPF Nigeria who prides as a bon-a-fide member of the Hayin Banki community said he is aware of the happenings in the community but have come not to condemn but together with the people chart a way out of the menace which is doing so much harm to the society.

According to Rev. Hayab, “our desire every day is to see that the best and successful people come out of the community which is a mini Nigeria with people of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds living peacefully."

For that to happen, Rev Hayab said certain things like drugs and substance abuse must be handled, which is why the organization agreed with the Hayin Banki Peace and Reconciliation to hold such an engagement.

He said the caliber of people on ground amongst which are the Head of Hayin Banki, the Kaduna state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Caleb Ma’aji, the Secretary of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) Mallam Ibrahim Kufena, other Christian and Muslim clerics, including the Northern Coordinator of GPF Nigeria, Sheikh Haliru Maraya, Mrs Rebecca John Tsako, Permanent commissioner at the Kaduna State Peace Commission, the Deputy Director on Drug Reduction and Control at the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is indicative of the love of society for the youths of the community.

Rev Hayab further expressed disheartening concern that the menace of drugs and substance abuse in the community is not limited to young boys alone but also girls and married women, hence called for self-soul searching and reflection as well as concerted efforts by all and sundry to salvage the situation which is capable of destroying our society.

He assured the youths that the gathering is not that of condemnation but members of one human family under God trying to help each other.

As part of the programme, goodwill messages and sensitization sessions were delivered by the Kaduna State Peace Commission (KSPC) and the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)on the dangers of Drug and substance abuse and the need to say NO TO DRUGS.

Both were quite enlightening, informative and educating. Also, the chief Imam of the community central mosque and Pastor Moses Danjuma, the founder of Divine Touch Ministry helped explore the religious positions on the issue of drugs and substance abuse, both concluding that God the creator is displeased with the act but still loves victims as He loves all of His creations.

They therefore called on both Christian and Muslim youths in the community to make the most of the opportunity accorded them by the programme for a positive change.

At the close of the event, so many young people expressed willingness to shun drugs and substance abuse with many others volunteering to join the campaign.

Politics / AYCF Raises Alarm Over Plot To Undermine Stability Of Nigeria by Jatuski: 2:49pm On Aug 12
The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has raised significant concerns regarding threats to Nigeria's stability in a recent press release by its President General Yerima Shettima.

The AYCF, representing the youth of Northern Nigeria, has highlighted several alarming incidents that it believes are part of a deliberate strategy to undermine the stability of the nation.

AYCF raised particular concerns over the integrity of political leadership in Nigeria's northern region with revelations specifically pointing to a plot targeting prominent figures, including the Vice President Kashim Shettima, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, and Senator AbdulAziz Yari.

The orchestrations, revealed by Abdul Dan Bature, one of the organizers of the August 1 protests, particularly the $50,000 scheme focused on Minister Matawalle, cast a long shadow over the political landscape, engendering suspicions about the motives behind such malign activities.

The AYCF called for a deeper inquiry into the political dynamics that may underlie these attacks apparently aimed at undermining the political influence of northern leaders, who are deemed crucial to the support base of President Bola Tinubu's administration.

"By targeting these key figures, the orchestrators of this scheme may be attempting to create divisions between the President and the northern political ranks, thereby destabilizing the broader political landscape of Nigeria," the statement said.

Shettima said such revelations highlight a greater concern regarding the safety and security of political office holders in a nation where power struggles often lead to nefarious tactics.

"The implications of such blackmail campaigns possess the potential to disrupt governance and compromise the effectiveness of leadership, particularly at a time when national unity and stability are paramount.

"The $50,000 plot against Minister Matawalle serves as a poignant reminder of the lengths to which President Tinubu's adversaries go to in their desperation to strip him of the influence of such powerful political figures in the North.

"The specificity of Matawalle as the target illustrates a calculated approach to weaken the President's existing political structure within the northern region. Minister Matawalle’s pivotal role in the defence sector amplifies the stakes involved, suggesting that such attacks could also compromise national security by diverting attention from pressing matters of state.

"The AYCF posits that the recent incidents of protests, unrest and the mounting agitations across Nigeria signal a broader and more daunting objective: the potential disruption of governance with intentions that may verge on coercive change.

"The notion that a systematic approach is at play raises serious concerns not merely for political actors but for the collective stability of the nation. In light of the fragmented nature of Nigeria's socio-political landscape, the potential for exploitation of existing divisions—particularly those rooted in ethnicity and religion—becomes a pressing reality that necessitates both urgency and vigilance.
Evidence of escalating tensions is starkly illuminated by recent protests in regions like Kaduna, Taraba, Benue, Katsina, and Kano, areas marked by deep-seated ethnic and religious divides," it pointed out.

The AYCF cautioned that unrestrained unrest in these regions could devolve into pervasive violence, thereby ushering Nigeria toward a state of chaos that could spiral beyond recovery.

"Such scenarios evoke an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear, undermining the very tenets of governance and security.
In addressing these alarming revelations, it becomes imperative for relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the claims made by the AYCF.

"The integrity of the political system must be upheld, and those engaging in blackmail schemes should be held accountable to restore public confidence in governance.

"As the nation grapples with such malfeasance, it is vital for Nigerian society to remain vigilant and demand accountability to safeguard its democratic values and ensure a future of political integrity," it stressed.

Education / ABU Law Conf: ICPC Chair Says Corruption Impediment To Nigeria’s Dev't by Jatuski: 5:09pm On Aug 08
*Says 87m bribes amounting to N700bn recorded in 2023

Corruption remains one of the most significant impediments to Nigeria’s development as it erodes trust in public institutions, undermines the rule of law, and stifles economic growth, the Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, declared in Zaria on Thursday.

According to a statement by the Public Affairs Directorate,
Office of the Vice-Chancellor,
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU, Zaria, Aliyu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), spoke when he delivered a keynote address at the ongoing International Law Conference organised by the Faculty of Law, ABU Zaria.

The ICPC chair, who spoke on “Law and Contemporary Societal Issues: Navigating Challenges and Opportunities”, also pointed out that corruption is not only a legal issue but also a social problem that requires a comprehensive and sustained approach.

According to a recent survey by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, he explained, corruption ranks fourth among the most critical problems affecting the country in 2023, after cost of living, insecurity and unemployment.

Aliyu revealed that in 2023, an estimated 87 million bribes amounting to N700 billion were paid and that the frequency of bribes is higher in rural areas than in urban areas.

“Despite these challenges, we are making progress. The rate of citizens reporting bribe payments to official authorities increased from 3.6 per cent in 2019 to 8.6 percent in 2023. This is a testament to the growing awareness and willingness of Nigerians to fight corruption”, he further said.

The ICPC chair stressed that abuse of office also remained a form of corrupt practice common in many sectors of the Nigerian public service, saying that sexual harassment is a significant issue in Nigerian tertiary institutions, with studies indicating a high prevalence among female students.

He said that according to 2018 World Bank survey, approximately 70 percent of female graduates from these institutions reported experiencing sexual harassment by classmates or instructors.
Aliyu described human right and social justice as the cornerstones of a fair society ensuring dignity, freedom, and equal opportunities for all.

“Corruption undermines these rights, breeding inequality and oppression. The ICPC is committed to upholding human rights and promoting social justice by combating corruption and ensuring access to essential services”, he said.

The ICPC boss, who also spoke on digital transformation and cybersecurity, urged that the judiciary needs continuous education and training to effectively adjudicate cyber-related cases such as online fraud, sexual extortion, cybersquatting, and unlawful interception of communications.

Aliyu concluded that tackling corruption, human rights, digital threats, and environmental issues presented major challenges and exciting opportunities and that these hurdles could be overcome by uniting efforts, embracing innovative technologies, and championing justice.

Politics / Order Release Of Detained Hunger Protesters, Timi Frank Urges Tinubu by Jatuski: 2:55pm On Aug 04
*Calls for restraint on the use of lethal force by Police, others

*Vows to drag Wike to ICC

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately order the unconditional release of all hunger protesters detained by the police and other security forces.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Frank also urged the President to prevent further violence and the use of lethal force against peaceful protesters by law enforcement agencies.

He criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his antagonistic stance towards the protesters and suggested that President Tinubu should dismiss him if he continues to show disrespect towards Nigerian youths.

"Nigerians have the inalienable right to protest against government policies that adversely affect them and to demand changes for the collective good," Frank stated.

He acknowledged that while the ongoing protests are well-intentioned, they have been exploited by sponsored groups in some states, which have aimed to discredit the organizers and provide security forces with an excuse to suppress the demonstrations.

“This should not be the case. The vacation Judge in Abuja who curtailed the rights of protesters by unjustly restricting them to the Moshood Abiola Stadium and other public spaces in Lagos also ruled that the police and other security agencies should protect the protesters both in Abuja and other parts of the country," he noted.

Frank criticized the security forces for failing to adhere to the court’s order, which resulted in the unjust killings, arrests, brutalization, and incarceration of protesters, as well as the hijacking of protests by government-sponsored agents to perpetuate criminal acts.

"This situation must not be allowed to continue. The President must genuinely protect the youths who are protesting. He must approach the protesters like a father dealing with an angry child. After all, the youths have no other country to call their own."

As the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, Frank condemned FCT Minister Wike for obtaining a biased court order that sought to confine protesters to the Abuja Stadium. He also praised the courage of the demonstrators who defied the order.

"The enforcement of this unjust order has led to peaceful protesters being tear-gassed by the police, arrested, and detained in large numbers, alongside the harassment of journalists," Frank emphasized.

He warned that any further acts of aggression against peaceful protesters by the police and other security agencies could escalate tensions and provoke resistance from the protesters.

Frank called for the international community to closely monitor the ongoing protests and the security forces' brutal responses. He urged the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union to impose visa bans on the FCT Minister and the chiefs of police and the army responsible for the mistreatment of protesters.

Expressing condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured, Frank urged the International Criminal Court to hold the Inspector General of Police and all Service Chiefs in Nigeria accountable for the killings of unarmed protesters in recent days.

He vowed to petition the ICC to prosecute Wike and the IGP for ordering the police to use tear gas and live ammunition against unarmed peaceful protesters in Abuja and Kano, respectively.

Frank urged the Federal Government to avoid using force against the protesters, stating that “only dialogue and peaceful engagements can bring the much-needed resolution to the protests.”

Politics / National Youth Alliance President Warns Against Chaos, Unintended Revolution by Jatuski: 8:41am On Aug 01
*Broadcasts to Nigerians on August 1

Fellow Nigerians, I wish to convey the National Youth Alliance (NYA’s) Position to the youth of our dear Country Ahead of your Nationwide planned Protests.

The National Youth Alliance; stands in unwavering solidarity with you on this historic day, August 1, 2024, as you protest against the egregious policies of the government. We assert the constitutional right of citizens to peacefully express displeasure and demand that their voices be heard, loud and clear. For far too long, our Nation has suffered under the weight of corruption, mismanagement, and inefficiency.

Our economy lies in tatters, our infrastructure is crumbling, and our people are suffering. We can no longer afford to stand idly by; while those in position of authority fail to act with the urgency and decisiveness required to address these pressing issues.

We join you to demand a better future for ourselves, our children, and our Nation. We join you to demand for a government that is accountable to the people, a government that is transparent and responsive to our needs.

We reiterate our call on the government and security agencies to respect citizens rights and protect the freedoms of Nigerians to peacefully express their discontent.

We demand that no Nigerian be intimidated or bullied for exercising his democratic rights provided for in our constitution. We demand that no citizen should be silenced or deterred from expressing discontent with the status quo. At the same time, we urge the government and security agencies to protect the public and properties from the antics of sponsored thugs who may seek to hijack the peaceful protest by unleashing harms on peaceful protesters, loot properties and perpetrate criminality. These individuals aim to misrepresent the intent of Nigerians and derail the main objective of the protest.

Standing in Solidarity with Caution

The NYA acknowledges the necessity of addressing Nigeria's severe economic and social challenges.

However, it is crucial that any actions taken are rooted in wisdom and careful consideration.

A wise person achieves with a fraction of the effort what a foolish person attempts with ten times the effort. Nigeria's problems are complex and require equally nuanced solutions.

Some of the Demands Are As Follows:

1.Immediate reversal to the former prices of petroleum products, as there’s no significant proof that fuel subsidy was actually removed.

2.As a matter of urgency, Government must address security challenges ravaging the nation.

3.Government should declare a state of emergency on agricultural sector to ensure sufficient food supplies at reduced prices.

4.The Electoral Act should be amended to make it mandatory for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to electronically transmit results of election from the Polling Units to the INEC RESULT VIEWING (IReV) which will serve as legal source for vote collation.

5. INEC must commence the registeration of new political parties with immediate effect, ensure that they conduct credible, free and fair elections that will represent the will of the electorates.

6. Finally, the Federal Government must reduce the cost of governance drastically, at all levels.

The Pitfall of Unplanned Actions

Nigeria faces challenges both internal and external. Despite having leaders who have led the country into decline since independence, there has been no international intervention similar to the no-flyzone and regime change enforced in Libya.

This raises the question: Who benefits from Nigeria's dysfunction? The issues are not just internal; external factors also play a significant role.

We caution against letting planned protests evolve into unplanned revolutions that could see Africa’s largest population become a new version of Libya. This could result in Nigeria disintegrating into factions of marauding ethnic militias fighting for control of resources, ultimately benefiting the same external shareholders of “Nigeria Ltd.” at half price or less.

Lessons from History: Libya's Example

The NYA points to Libya as a cautionary tale.

What began as protests in Libya evolved into a revolution and eventually resulted in a failed state. Thirteen years later, Libya remains in turmoil, far from what the protesters initially envisioned. This serves as a stark reminder that unplanned actions can lead to un-intended and disastrous outcomes.

Recent Protests in Kenya: A Cautionary Tale

Recent protests in Kenya serve as a pertinent example. While these protests have yielded some positive results, they have also resulted in number casualties and significant property damages. The NYA urges Nigeria’s to learn from Kenya’s experience. Although protests can be effective, they often come at a high cost. Nigeria’s are renowned worldwide for their intelligence and achievements. We must avoid reducing our selves to marauding protesters who turn to looters. Instead, we should approach our struggle with intelligence and wisdom to bear the fruits we desire.

The African Spring: A Misnomer for Nigeria

The term "African Spring" has been used to describe waves of change across the continent, but it is somewhat unfitting for Nigeria. Nigeria does not experience a spring season; it has a rainy season and a dry season.

Thus, our movement for change should reflect our unique context. We can learn from the poorly executed transitions in other African and Middle Eastern regions. Nigeria’s change must be smoother and more impactful, using the power of the masses intelligently and efficiently to avoid turning a bad situation into a worse one.

Advocating for Strategic Action

The NYA cautions against allowing planned protests to devolve into unplanned revolutions, which could lead Nigeria down a path of destruction. Instead, we advocate for actions that are well-thought-out and coordinated to avoid unnecessary collateral damage.

One effective strategy proposed is a continuation of two-week sit-at-home protests, over a period of months- a form of civil disobedience where citizens refrain from going to work or performing any duties. This approach requires coordination, solidarity, and discipline-qualities essential for the long-term improvement of Nigeria.

The Power of Civil Disobedience

Historical precedents demonstrate the power of civil disobedience. Gandhi used this approach to end colonial rule in India, and Martin Luther King Jr. successfully employed it during the American Civil Rights Movement.

Civil disobedience is a formidable tactic that cannot easily be mischaracterized by the government as a campaign to destabilize Nigeria or as the actions of terrorist groups.

The Nigerian Labour Congress: A Porous and Corrupt Entity

The NYA also points out the inefficacy of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), an organization riddled with corruption and prosperity. Despite having the power to shut down the country through strikes, the NLC often fails to do so effectively. If the NLC were truly committed to the cause, the government would be powerless without labor. A prolonged withdrawal of labor would lead to the collapse of any government.

However, the NLC’s history of calling-off strikes at the last minute, often due to behind the-scenes financial dealings, highlights its lack of integrity and dedications to the people’s cause. We stand united and peaceful, and we demand that the voices of citizens be heard and their views respected. As citizens with rights and privileges, we will not be intimidated or bullied, and we will not be silenced. We will not be deterred by the threats and intimidation tactics of those who seek to maintain the status quo.

Fellow Nigerians, may i once again reiterate the solidarity of the National Youth Alliance. We are in this together, and together, we will make our voices heard. We will demand a better future for ourselves, our children, and our Nation. We will demand a government that works for the people, not just the privileged few.

Conclusion

While the NYA supports the call for action against the hardships faces by Nigerians, we urge that such actions be strategic and well-planned. An un-coordinated protest can lead to chaos, whereas a disciplined approach, like civil disobedience, can effect real change.

Nairaland / General / Protest: SWAN Cautions Youth, Sports Personalities, Sues For Calm, Dialogue by Jatuski: 3:39pm On Jul 31
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has urged Nigerians, mostly youths and sports personalities to toe the path of peace and dialogue, instead of engaging in violent protest regarding the challenges facing the country.

This admonition is coming on the heels of planned protest by some persons in parts of Nigeria on August 1, 2024.

SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, in a statement through the Association's Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo on Wednesday reckoned that while citizens have right to protest, such should be done in a most peaceful manner.

President Benjamin while recalling how previous protests in Nigeria had damaged critical National assets, called on the protesters to be mindful of mostly Sports infrastructure across the country as any form of destruction will further create needless deficit.

He said that instead of embarking on destruction of lives and properties, citizens should reflect on positive and progressive moves aimed at ensuring improved Sports development, which has obvious potential to uplift the country's economy.

"As the second most economic viable option in the entire world, Sports serve as catalyst for needed growth and development in any society. Therefore Sports men and women including athletes, officials, administrators and of course the sporting media have the responsibility to lead the way in terms of conduct and influence in our various residential and public places.

"Instead of joining any band wagon of destructive tendencies, let us encourage fellow Nigerians to engage in sporting activities in terms of physical exercise and other areas of gainful endeavours," he said.

The number one sports writer in Nigeria then admonished leaders at all levels to, in line with global standards, use legislative means to initiate sustainable policies that will loosen tight ends and clear bureaucratic bottlenecks, which had hampered sports development in the country.

He said, "Also, Nigeria as a developing nation should be a fortress for talent discovery and development because of abundance of human capital resources that abound in every nook and cranny of our communities, local government areas and states.

"Therefore, there is need for continious engagement with all stakeholders to harness and engage them meaningfully. In doing this, the role of the private sector which is a major driving force of the economy is critical.

"Again, the government at all levels should do more in the provision of sporting infrastructure at the grassroots, as a veritable way of engaging mostly the young people, because Sports, with the right funding approach, has enormous potential to drastically reduce unemployment."

The SWAN President then assured that, "As professional Sports Writers, we are ever ready to offer useful contributions in form of advice amidst taking practical steps that will make meaningful impact."

Politics / AYF Expresses Fears Over Nationwide Protest, Says It Could Be Hijacked by Jatuski: 1:47pm On Jul 29
*Says losses from arsonists, looting by hoodlums will cause more excruciating pains

While expressing its reservations and deepest concern over the proposed #Endhungerprotest billed for August 1 to 10 2024, Frontline group, Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) has expressed fears that it could be hijacked by hoodlums or other enemies of the country.

AYF expressed this in a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Mohammed Ahmed Zagi, made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Tuesday July 29.

"We are worried that the planned protest, which is scheduled for August 1 to 10 has potentials of becoming violent and out hand that will be inimical and disruptive to the socio-economic settings in the country. This is because hoodlums wait for such opportunities to unleash mayhem, loot, burn shops, worship centres and other public properties.

"At this time that Nigeria is going through economic hardship, any further losses from arsonists or looting by hoodlums will cause more excruciating pains, hence we appeal for a second thought from the organisers and sponsors of the protest," the statement said.

While acknowledging that those agitating for the planned protest have legitimate reasons to do so in a democratic clime, AYF suggested the exploring of other means of reaching out to the government, especially at a point when many concerned stakeholders have met with the President to drive home the grievances of Nigerians.

"We are all witnesses to the untold hardship citizens are going through following the inflation that is ripping through our economy. We however, caution that other means of reaching to the government for dialogue should be adopted instead of protests which may turn bloody, causing more pains," the statement said.

AYF tasked the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government, state governors and political office holders to urgently look into the sufferings of majority of Nigerians and provide succor within the shortest period of time.

Education / NOK University: Engr Auta's KYC Inter-projects Drags EFCC To Appeal Court by Jatuski: 9:02am On Jul 29
*Seeks Order for Stay of Execution of forfeiture of assets.

Dissatisfied with a judgment delivered by a trial Federal High Court 7 Abuja, which said that a privately funded tertiary institution NOK University Kachia be forfeited to the Federal Government, KYC Inter-projects Nigeria Limited has approached the Appeal Court to overturn the judgment.

In the appeal sighted by our correspondence and filed by the Appellant through its counsel, Sir Ben Churchill Aniekwena Esq. of Ben Churchill Aniekwena & Co.(Juris Consults), against the Judgment of Honourable Justice Joyce O. Abdulmalik, delivered on Friday June 7, 2024 in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/688/2022, is being appealed upon the grounds that the learned judge erred in his judgment.

"The Learned trial Judge erred in Law when it entertained and granted the Reliefs sought by the Respondent in an Application predicated on Civil Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/688/2022 for interim and final Forfeiture Orders under SECTION 17 OF THE ADVANCED FEE FRAUD AND OTHER RELATED OFFENCES ACT 2006 and SECTION 44(2) OF THE CONSTITUTION OF FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA 1999 (AS AMENDED) without (any) form or formal Charge of Offence(s) whatsoever instituted or filed on the Matter," the counsel said.

KYC Inter-projects Nigeria Limited explained through its counsel Sir Ben Churchill that, "the Appellant is a company incorporated under the Company and Allied Matters Act 2020 entered a Relationship/Joint Venture Agreement with the 1st Respondent in the trial Suit and had invested its funds, machineries and heavy duty equipment and properties in developing NOK UNIVERSITY INCLUSIVE OF THE LAND, NOK UNIVERSITY SENATE BUILDING, NOK UNIVERSITY ICT BUILDING, NOK UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCE DEANERY BUILDING, TWO NOK ACADEMIC BUILDINGS, FACULTY HALL AND ALL BUILDINGS THEREOF LOCATED IN KACHIA KADUNA STATE as listed in SCHEDULE 1 annexed to the said Ex-parte Originating Motion of the Applicant, which consequently suffered the final Forfeiture Order to the Federal Government as resolved by the learned trial Judge.

"The Appellant is not the 1st Respondent (Anthony Hassan) in the trial Suit or any of his Privies or Staff of the Federal Ministry of Health suspected to be in conversion of the Funds received either directly from the Ministry of Health," KYC Inter-projects Nigeria Limited said.

Sir Aniekwena contested that the learned trial Judge erred in Law when he entertained an Application boarding on forfeiture Order over offences as canvassed by the EFCC under the Penal Code Law, Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000, Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (As Amended), and the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and wrongly applied the evidential Standard of Proof required in Civil cases on preponderance of Evidence as against Standard of Proof beyond reasonable doubt applicable to Criminal cases as well as Offences provided under the above said enactments or in cases where the commission of a Crime is directly in issue as in a proceedings be it Civil or Criminal.

Learned counsel, Sir Churchill under the grounds of appeal, also added that "the Learned trial Judge erred in Law and fact, when he failed to properly evaluate the Evidence before it in arriving at his decision."

The counsel argued further that the Learned trial Judge erred in Law when he proceeded to entertain, the Applicant/Respondent Application tagged, “EX-PARTE ORIGINATING MOTION” dated and filed 18th and 19th May 2022 respectively, when no such Form for Commencement of Action is provided under the Rules of Court and/or procedure for Administration of Criminal Justice.

Meanwhile, the counsel to KYC has also filed an Application in seeking an order for the Unconditional Stay of Execution of the Judgment/Decision of the Federal High Court of Justice Abuja Judicial Division (COURT 7), delivered by his Lordship Honourable Justice Joyce O. Abdulmalik on Friday the 7th day of June 2024, pending the hearing and determination of the Appeal filed by the Applicant/Appellant at the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division.

"AN ORDER OF THIS HONOURABLE COURT: Restraining the Judgment Creditor/Respondent from disposing off or releasing any part of the asset or property in NOK UNIVERSITY ordered to be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

"AND SUCH FURTHER OR OTHER ORDERS as the Honourable Court may deem fit and proper to make in the circumstances of this suit."

Politics / Ohanaeze Applauds Matawalle, Ribadu's Efforts To Protect Ndigbo, Nigerians by Jatuski: 3:47pm On Jul 28
*Amidst Potential Protests, Rebellion

The current unrest plaguing Nigeria has instilled a sense of unease among the populace, with reports indicating a significant number of Nigerian politicians fleeing the country for shelter overseas. The abrupt exodus of top government officials, political elites, and prominent business figures has triggered widespread apprehension, particularly among the Igbo residents in the North and Southwest states.

In response to these concerning developments, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, is proud to extend its appreciation to the Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Bello Matawalle, and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for their unwavering dedication in curbing the politically motivated nationwide protests set to commence from August 1 to 10, 2024.

Ohanaeze had previously called upon Igbo residents in the Northern and Southwestern states to abstain from participating in the forthcoming protests, aligning with our core principles of peace and advocating for calm amidst turbulent times.

In a statement issued, Secretary-General Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro assured, both Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora, that stringent security measures will be enforced by the Ministry of State for Defence and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to safeguard against any form of molestation, intimidation, or harm to Igbo lives and properties in the North and Southwest regions.

He reiterated the resolute decision of Igbo traders and residents to boycott the planned nationwide protests is a testament to our unwavering commitment to peaceful coexistence and unity.

"We implore the proponents of the August 1st to 10th, 2024 protests to explore avenues for dialogue with President Tinubu to address their grievances peacefully and amicably, without resorting to violence or causing casualties.

"We are cognizant of the presence of foreign mercenaries in league with unpatriotic elements, scheming to incite chaos in Nigeria and using the Igbo people as pawns in their destructive pursuits. However, the collective decision of Igbo residents to distance themselves from the protests has left the instigators perturbed, prompting concerns that they may resort to inciting violence against the Igbo populace in a bid to provoke their involvement".

The Igbo leader underscored that the withdrawal of Igbo residents from the protests disrupts the sinister plans of the sponsors, rendering their malevolent intentions unattainable and therefore urged the Presidency, through the Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Bello Matawalle, and the Office of the National Security Adviser, to intensify efforts in protecting Igbo residents in the North and Southwest from any form of harassment or intimidation.

"Importantly, we affirm that there will be no protests in the Southeast, as we entrust Igbo youths with directives to thwart any attempts to incite unrest within the region and in solidarity, we uphold the values of peace, unity, and non-violence, demonstrating our unwavering resolve to foster a harmonious and prosperous nation," the statement said.

Politics / Protest Aimed At Destabilizing Nigeria, Eliminating Key Political Figures -NYLF by Jatuski: 5:17pm On Jul 27
A prominent group comprising over 40 associations, Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) has revealed that some foreign bodies are aiming to use the End Bad Governance protest billed to commence on August 1 to destabilize Nigeria and assassinate key political figures.

NYLF President, Comrade Elliot Afiyo revealed this, while briefing newsmen in Abeokuta on Saturday July 27, 2024, while announcing why his group is pulling out of the planned protest.

"We are made to understand that one of the major reasons for the protests is to completely destabilize Nigeria especially the Northern part of the country and Abuja by massive destruction of government infrastructures including schools, hospitals, railways and others. This act of the promoters’ imaginations, will ignite the Northern opposition to Tinubu’s government which will invariably lead to political unrest and violence against the Non Northerners especially the Yorubas. By so doing, another Araba episode will be repeated.

"Foreign mercenaries would be asked to take over the protests on the second day, to destroy all the worship centres both mosques and churches. This is aim at provoking a religious war in the North which will be promoted and aided by the other promoters from other regions," he revealed.

According to NYLF President, on the third day, the foreign mercenaries will be mobilized to take over Abuja and attack Military and Police formations and stations which will make both the military and police to retreat back to their formations to protect their families thereby, providing opportunities and spaces for the mercenaries to properly execute the agenda of the fourth day.

"The fourth day, more foreign mercenaries from the North, Militants from the Niger Delta and Gunmen (who are unwilling) from the South-East, will be mobilized and eliminate high profile politicians, traditional rulers and religious leaders who are considered and regarded as highly corrupt and more powerful and influential.

"On the fifth day, all local media houses will be burnt down and identified journalists will be eliminated to ensure total blackout of critical information.

"On the sixth day, Aso Rock (Villa) will be taken over and all Government Houses in all the states will be fully occupied by new Landlords. These actions will be fully supported by some foreign nations who will provide air power to checkmate the Nigeria Military. All Military formations have been fully marked.

"On the seventh day, all economic entities including Refineries, economic zones such as Oil terminals and Bank Headquarters would be bombed to paralyze the economic power of the country.

"On the eight day, some foreign nations will be drafted under the guise of peace mission to occupy the country and rule it indirectly. Regional Governments will be announced and established.

"On the nineth day, state of emergency will be declared in Kaduna, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu and no fly zones will be imposed on these cities.

"On the tenth day, religious worships and gathering will be prohibited on Fridays and Sundays," he explained.

He pointed out that considering the above strategies and plans, it will foolhardy and ignonimously stupid for any sane Nigerian to be contemplating or conceiving of such protests.

"Little wonder, the protests were tagged Ten days of Rage.

"We want to make it clear without mincing words that majority of the promoters of these protests are not aware of these plans because the minority few are the collaborators with foreign Organizations and Governments to execute the international conspiracy against Nigeria.

"Consequent upon these revelations, we are strongly warning the Federal Government and all the Security Agencies to ensure that not more than Ten (10) people are allowed to gather together in any part of the country between the 1st to 10th of August, 2024 except religious gathering. Even at that, there should be proper and diligent screening and check-ups.

"We want to state clearly that the Northern Youth will hold the Government and the Security Agencies responsible and regard them as possible collaborators to destroy our country and our future so as to please the West.

"We would like to appeal to our parents and all religious leaders to counsel their wards and congregations against these protests. While admonishing the government to disregard whatever economic advices coming from World Bank and IMF," he said.

Afiyo said that in view of their concerns, it was extremely necessary to address the press concerning the proposed EndBadGovernance protest scheduled on the 1st of August, 2024.

"It is absolutely necessary to draw the attention of all well meaning Nigerians about the sinister motives behind this protest as planned by the promoters. While acknowledging the fact that protests are legal and constitutional means and ways of expressing the disaffection of the minds of the citizens towards the Government, it should be also noted that the timing, method, capacity, environment and necessity for such protests must be considered before protests are carried out.

"It is in the light of these aforementioned indices that we would like to clarify and reveal the dangerous signals, schedules, strategies planned activities and operational guidelines by the promoters of these protests.

"In as much as the NYLF was willing and is ready to participate actively by mobilizing the Northern youth as expected, contrariwise, the NYLF after receiving intelligence reports and briefings, has decided to not only withdraw from the protests but also would make sure that the protests are not carried out at all because of the following reasons:

"The main purpose of these institutions is to ensure that wrong policies are introduced which will cause hardships and hunger which in turn, will ignite violence protests that will lead to instabilities in African countries especially Nigeria which will invariably lead to the total collapse of the African continent," he said.

He therefore, admonished the media to stand firm against any move to destabilize the government, no matter how bad that government is and wait for the next election.

"The ENDSARS was intended to destroy the economies of our cities especially Lagos and to a large extent, they succeeded. Let us not be ignorant of the devices of our enemies in the guise of religion and ethnicity," he watned.

Nairaland / General / SON, Importers Partner In War Against Influx Of Substandard Products by Jatuski: 7:36am On Jul 27
The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has called on importers to ensure the products they bring into the country meet all the regulatory approvals

Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director-General/Chief Executive, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) made the call during the on the occasion of stakeholders sensitisation in Awka on Thursday.

Okeke who was represented by Mrs Foluso Bolaji, the Director of Public Relations, said product counterfeiters should have no place to hibernate within Nigeria because of its dangerous implication to lives of the people and health of the economy

He said Nigeria needs to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the African common market to attain economic and trade development.

He said the agency had been confiscating fake and sub-standard products worth several billions of naira across the country and it would relent while assuring that no person, group, sector or region is being targeted.

According to him, "we have since embarked on arraignment and trials at the various federal courts of suspects linked with the failed and impounded goods.

“Let us not allow fake and uncertified imports find their way into our markets. This is what the SON Act tries to tackle.

“All imported products must also be certified to the NIS or other approved standards through SON’s Offshore Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) products, we should know that registration and certification are vital tools for product competitiveness.

“This forum would therefore not be different in eliciting more support, collaborations as well as challenging all stakeholders in Anambra and adjoining states on the need to follow right processes for mutual business growth and public safety,” he said.

Okeke said the nationwide stakeholders’ sensitisation was to enlighten operators on the provisions of the SON ACT No. 14 of 2015 and also strengthen stakeholders’ engagement and collaborations.

He said SON had one of the best ISO Management Systems which trained providers and had continually updated its training programmes to suit the latest international standards, practices, principles and in-depth knowledge.

“As operators we urge you to always certify your product's quality with SON in order to make made-in-Nigeria products and services good to go anywhere in the world.

He appealed to the stakeholders to be ‘on board the standards voyage' by ensuring strict adherence to standards and quality assurance for their businesses to grow.

“The work of standardisation is to grow Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, promote agro-allied sector, ensure safety of lives and property as well as ensure industrial and economic development.

“Let us endeavour to grow our own product brands and encourage more investments by standards adherence,” he said .

In his presentation, Mr Manji Lawan of the Inspectorate and Compliance Directorate warned Nigerians against the use of fairly-used tyres and weak gas cylinders.

Lawan urged the stakeholders to join in the fight against importation of substandard product.
