Politics / Be Your Brother’s Keeper, Not Kidnapper –kalu by jeff500: 9:44am On Sep 28, 2015

EMINENT businessman and former governor of Abia State, who is also the President of Slok Group, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has called on Nigerians to see themselves as their brother’s keeper and not kidnapper.

In a statement issued by the Orji Uzor Kalu Media Centre, Abuja, and signed by Mrs. Rubby Obinna, the businessman frowned on the lackadaisical attitude among Nigerians in recent times, in their relationship with one another.

Kalu reiterated he was not happy with unfolding events in the country, especially with the kidnap of an elder statesman, Chief Olu Falae, who was a former minster of finance and secretary to the federation.

Going down memory lane, Kalu recalled that in his childhood, things were not as haywire, as they have become today, adding that Nigerians were their brother’s keeper in those days, unlike today when they become their brother’s kidnapper.

Politics / Police Capture 46 Suspected Cultists In Edo by jeff500: 12:13pm On Sep 25, 2015
The Police in Edo arrested 46 suspected cultists ‎in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State on Thursday.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo, Mr Chris Ezike, who confirmed the arrest to newsmen, said it was part of the efforts by the command to maintain law and order in the state.

According to the police, the suspects were arrested during a raid in Ekpoma, following recent cult clashes recorded in the town, which also hosts the Ambrose Alli University.

Ezike noted that the suspects were being screened by intelligence officers from the command.

He recalled that the command had vowed to make Edo uncomfortable for criminals when he ‎read the riot act to senior officers and the rank and file of the command on Sept. 14.

He said, “Cultists are criminals; I will not allow them to operate in Edo. You know there was a cult war in Ekpoma recently. So, I directed that the situation must be brought under control.

“And since the raid which lasted for two days, Ekpoma is now calm. We arrested 46 suspects. Pump action and AK47 rifles and ammunition were recovered from them; we are screening them,’’ he said.

Politics / 4 Killed And Dozens Hurt In US School Bus Collision by jeff500: 11:54am On Sep 25, 2015
A school bus carrying international students collided with a tour vehicle in the US West Coast city of Seattle Thursday, killing at least four people and injuring dozens of others, officials said.

In addition to the four fatalities, 51 people were injured, including 15 critically, with several needing surgery, authorities reported.

At least one Chinese person was among the victims, the foreign ministry in Beijing said Friday.

Local news reports said the four killed were all students.

Images of the accident on a busy bridge showed extensive damage to the left side of the bus, part of which was completely sheared off by the force of the crash.

Melissa Mixon, spokeswoman for North Seattle College, told AFP that 45 students and staff with the school’s international program were on board the bus.

She could not immediately provide information on the nationality or age of the victims.

One of the hospitals that accepted victims said four male Japanese students were treated but not seriously injured, according to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.

An 18-year-old Japanese student who was on the bus told NHK that there were five to six Japanese students on board.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters at a regular briefing that China expressed “deep condolences to the victims and sincere sympathy to the bereaved families and the injured.”

College president Warren Brown told reporters the students were going to visit Safeco Field, a sports stadium, as part of their orientation program.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray said authorities were assisting families of the victims who were flying into Seattle from several countries.

“The accident occurred when a charter bus traveling with the students collided with a ‘Ride the Ducks’ tour vehicle,” Mixon said.

The college hosts some 1,000 international students from 50 countries, including China, Korea and Japan, according to its website.

The school year is scheduled to begin on Monday.

Passengers on board the bus and the “Ride the Ducks” amphibious vehicle — used for tours in several US cities — could be seen crawling out of the wreckage, some of them dazed and bloodied, while others were carried away on stretchers.

The “Duck” name is derived from DUKW, the six-wheel amphibious vehicles used by the US military during World War II.

– ‘Bodies just everywhere’ –

Witnesses said the tour vehicle appeared to have something wrong with its front left tire as it swerved and hit an SUV before crashing into the school bus coming the opposite way.

Bradley Sawhill, who witnessed the crash, told the Seattle Times that everything happened very fast.

“I got out of my car and there were bodies just everywhere,” he said. “People lying in the street.”

The accident took place shortly after 11:00 am (1800 GMT) on the Aurora Bridge, a busy thoroughfare that links the city’s center with northwest Seattle.

The wounded were transported to area hospitals, which launched an appeal for blood.

Some of the school bus passengers who escaped relatively unscathed were taken to the nearby Woodland Park Zoo where they were given first aid before being taken back to their campus.

Other bloodied victims were laid out on yellow tarps near the scene of the accident.

Mayor Murray said his thoughts and prayers were with the victims and their families.

“Seattle had a terrible tragedy today,” he said in a statement. “There has been loss of life and dozens of injuries.”

Seattle police said an investigation was under way to determine the cause of the crash and a team from the National Transportation Safety Board was expected in Seattle Friday.

“Collision investigators are reviewing witness reports of a possible mechanical issue on the Duck vehicle,” a statement said, adding that preliminary alcohol tests on the drivers came out negative.

Politics / 6 Dead In Attack On DR Congo Army Base by jeff500: 10:45am On Sep 25, 2015
At least three Congolese soldiers were killed in an attack on their camp in the troubled east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, military sources said Friday.

Three soldiers’ wives were also killed in the assault on the camp at Rumangabo, 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.
The attackers also made off with heavy weapons, a source said.
“Three soldiers were badly wounded and died at the scene,” army spokesman Captain Guillaume Djiko said
Mineral-rich North Kivu has been torn apart by conflict for over two decades, with Ugandan and Rwandan rebel groups still active there and blamed for killing hundreds of civilians despite a UN mission to pacify the province.

Politics / Security Recover 286 Livestock In Kaduna by jeff500: 7:41am On Sep 25, 2015
AS security operatives increased offensive against cattle rustlers and other armed gangs in the state, the Kaduna State committee on the distribution of animals recaptured from cattle rustlers has returned 286 livestock to the owners at the Birnin Gwari distribution centre.
Media aide to the governor, Malam Samuel Aruwan, said that armed security operatives are intensifying efforts to rid the state of armed groups terrorising cattle owners in various communities, while providing update on the ongoing military operation against cattle rustlers operating in Kamuku and Kuyanbana forests, which cut across Kaduna, Niger, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Aruwan also pointed out that the committee also returned 46 sheep to their owners after verifying their claims to be true.

Meanwhile, Aruwan further stressed that, “security operations continue in the forest areas, as the Operation Yaki Surveillance Patrol team attached to the Sabon-Gari Divisional Police Headquarters, Kaduna on 19th September, 2015 at about 3:00am received a distress call that armed robbers were operating at a house on Gwandu Road in Kaduna metropolis.
“The operatives immediately rushed to the scene where the bandits engaged them in a gun battle and as a result, the gang leader was shot dead while other members of the gang escaped with bullet wounds. Items recovered from them include one AK 47 rifle No. BE6350992 with the magazine painted in police colours and one Baretta pistol No. CB080652 – Y5054. Investigation has already commenced to track down other fleeing members of the gang.”
Meanwhile, a security expert and leader of Youths and Crime Prevention Initiative Nigeria, Mr. Opara Osita, has faulted the closure of Assemblies of God churches, mission schools and hospitals in Saminaka, Lere local council of Kaduna by the state government following the leadership crisis in the church.
Osita said that the state government should have looked for another way to resolve the crises rather than closure of these institutions.
Addressing a press conference, Osita remarked that the closure of the churches, schools and hospitals would escalate the crises rather than resolve it.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai last week directed that mission schools and hospitals belonging to the Assemblies of God Church be shut down, to avoid the leadership tussle in the church degenerating into a crisis in the state.
The churches that were shut down as a result of the crisis were the Assemblies of God Church, Nmbare and the Assemblies of God Church (Jerusalem), while the institutions affected are the Theological Seminary of Northern Nigeria (TSNN), Shalom Comprehensive College, and AGC Evangelist Hospital owned by the church.

Politics / Federal Appointments: Mbazuluike Tells Buhari You Hate Ndigbo by jeff500: 8:36am On Sep 23, 2015
First Republic Aviation Minister and one of the few surviving nationalists, Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi has been angry recently.
His anger stemmed from what he described as President Muhammadu Buhari’s continued hatred of the Igbo.
He, therefore, urged the president to put a stop at it forthwith.
Amechi who spoke to Oriental News pointed out that though his antecedent showed the president to be anti-Igbo, and the fact that most of the Igbo did not vote for him during the presidential election, he would not win the love of Ndigbo by alienating them so openly.
A former member of the Zikists Movement, Amechi, popularly known as “the Boy is Good,” spoke on the appointments so far made by the president, the delay in inaugurating his cabinet, warning that Nigeria was too big to be run by an absolute sole administrator.
He also spoke about the anti-corruption war and the difficulties before Buhari, the opposition political parties and the political attitude of Ndigbo. Excerpts:
President Buhari is yet to constitute his cabinet, how healthy is that for the country? Also the new government has been talking tough on the fight against corruption, is it possible?
I don’t know why the new President, Buhari has not been able to select some materials for his cabinet and forward them to the Senate three months after his inauguration. Nigeria is too big a country to be run by an absolute sole administrator. On the other hand, I’m afraid; I’m still uncomfortable about certain things, statements emanating from the government. For example, the President has said that his searchlight for corrupt people and dirty politicians who stole money belonging to the country will be limited to the past administration. If he does that, then I will say he is not the Buhari that I know. The Buhari I know is the one that has the courage to face any situation. Unless he did that when he was a military man, but I hear people say that once a soldier, always a soldier. There are in his APC party some of the most corrupt people in the country; there are some past governors and other high ranking government functionaries at the federal level who stole more money than even the people in the Jonathan’s bazaar. My fear is that he will be afraid to beam a searchlight on such people because most of the people who provided the money with which he fought his election are the people who stole this money from the public, from the state and federal government. So, if he is really sincere, his search should go back to all political parties, to all past office holders in the National Assembly, in the state executive levels and even presidential executive level that’s where he should go. But I imagine that is the difficulty that he is having because there are some of these people who he wants to be in his government but they are dirty as the devil himself. Be that as it may, there are other people in this country who are still good. There are yet untried people in this country, he doesn’t have to look for only experienced politicians, he should use a new set of people. The military introduced so much stealing and plundering into governance in Nigeria, that it will be difficult to eradicate it unless we start all over again. The military sent away nationalists who fought for independence for the country and went into government. The military came and went into stealing and looting and since the military remained for such a long time, totaling 38 years, and the people they produced that took over from them are surrogates and collaborators in the military looting. And so it will not be easy to kick them all out, it will not be advisable to pick new rulers from the people who still have the stigma and stern of the military. But he has to shake it off, the whole world is looking upon Buhari, he should be the original Buhari that we know.
There have been massive condemnation of Buhari’s appointments so far especially from the South-East where people felt by the appointments the president seems to have alienated the zone from the country, is that not a worrisome development?
There is no doubt that Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria is anti-Igbo so far in what he has done in the government. It is also true that the majority of Ndigbo did not vote for him during the election, but that is not a reason why he should hate a people so much that he will neglect them totally. Alright, look at the case of Ogbonnaya Onu, why did he not appoint Ogbonnaya Onu the Secretary to the Federal Government. Ogbonnaya Onu has been faithfully with him, he contested two past presidential elections under the chairmanship of Ogbonnaya Onu’s political party when Ogbonnaya Onu was the national chairman of that political party. He has worked with the man and Ogbonnaya Onu is the cleanest possible Igbo man in politics, we have seen so far. If he does not hate Ndigbo why did he stall the appointment of such a man and is one of the few higher appointments that need not go to the Senate for clearing. I will personally advise Buhari to be a new Buhari particularly, with regards to his attitude towards Ndigbo. He took over the government of Shagari in 1983 because Umaru Dikko said it and he has not refuted it, that he took over that government to stop an Igbo man being a President of Nigeria in 1987. Because according to NPN then, the next presidential candidate of NPN then in 1987 will be an Igbo man and he was desperate to stop an Igbo man being a president in 1987, that was why he took over government in 1983. He so hated the Igbo at that time and must not give the impression that in the new arrangement, in the new shift that has come, that he has continued to hate Ndigbo to that extent. In my personal letter to him when he won the election, I told him one thing, I said you don’t catch a fly with vinegar. If really you want to kill a fly, you attract a fly with honey, not with vinegar. So, if even you don’t like the Igbo, you don’t win them back to love you, to be a man by so openly alienating them. On part of Ndigbo themselves, they are so divided, they are so purposeless, they are so scattered that the present generation are a very great liability to the Igbo nation, Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria. The present generation of political leaders, they are doing the greatest disservice, they cannot come together, and most of them are thinking so much of their individual selves. So, unless they come together, there was a time the Youruba were in the kind of position in which Ndigbo are now. But the Yoruba are better politicians, they regrouped, planned, drew up a programme, made a term programme and eventually bounced back. Ndigbo should go back to the drawing board and allow a real leadership to come up. They have materials, they don’t want to use. They are so individualist, some of them are so short-sighted, some of them are so machinery that they do their own politics of chop and quench. Chop today don’t think about tomorrow. But the President owes it as a natural and constitutional duty to lessen his apparent dislike of Ndigbo.
Now there is a new ruling party, what kind of opposition are you expecting from other parties like the PDP?
The PDP is the official opposition party in the country, the PDP itself lacks organization. They lack purposeful leadership, even as at now I don’t know if they have any leadership at all, they are so confused. Another possible political party that could have some strength is APGA, but APGA is too small and too sectional. They talk of being Igbo party, how can you, no tribal party can go anywhere in Nigeria. Nigeria is a big country; you need every part of this country if you are a political organization. So, the PDP needs a total reorganization, the PDP is a conglomeration of different political bird fellows who came together for the purpose of stealing. Owing to the poor leadership it had or lack of leadership it had during the Jonathan era. Jonathan sat there, then the hawks and thieves were plundering the country and he couldn’t do anything. People like us wanted to get to him to say look don’t you see what is happening, but they closed the gate so tight that they made it impossible for people to get to Jonathan and so the poor man kept swallowing in his ineptitude and poor leadership quality that eventually he got drowned in the pool and it is the same hawks that remained in the PDP now. But most of them as opportunistic as they are, are rushing over now to the APC and I have told APC to be very, very careful of them. In the letter I wrote to Buhari, I told him very soon you will get people rushing into your party, the same people who are rushing into your party, is there any problem within their party, they will go away with the speed with which they came in and they are not coming in because they believe in your ideology, if you have any ideology at all, they are coming in to see if they can find a new platform either to protect themselves from crimes of looting they committed before or they want a new platform to continue to steal. I wrote to Buhari in this regard, I do hope the letter got to him, I do hope he reads it with objectivity and not looking at it as coming from an Igbo man. I see myself as a Nigerian nationalist and that is what I am. I was never a regional politician in my political days, I was a member of parliament for four years, re-elected again as a member of parliament. I became National Publicity Secretary of my political party, the NCNC, and the secretary of its parliamentary party. So, I have been looking at Nigeria from a nationalistic and national point of view, I’m not sectional in Nigeria, so when I talk to people like Buhari as president, I know what I am saying. That is also what I told people in the Ohanaeze, the poor leadership we had in Ohanaeze, and they are merely interested in how much money they can grab from Jonathan. They were rushing to Abuja to collect money, the Igbo organizations; the Aka Ikenga in Lagos went to Buhari to collect money and I heard that the man who collected the money from Buhari did not share the money with the people and so they are having crisis there. The same thing is perverting Ohanaeze; I don’t know, it is a rotten society in which we live, I feel ashamed.

Sports / It’s Time For Africa!-fifa Presidency by jeff500: 8:27am On Sep 23, 2015
Undoubtedly this is a testy time for FIFA. The world football governing body has been embroiled in several corruption scandals down the years, but the latest of these periodic convulsions has been the most devastating and makes it imperative to change the old order.
FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, realised the need to have a breath of fresh air in the game’s leadership; the avalanche of criticisms that trailed the recent revelations left him no choice. He had agreed to quit the helm and conduct a fresh election early next year.
Important as this change is however, there is also a compelling need to look outside the traditional power centres in the search for this freshness. Europe had historically provided leadership for FIFA from its birth in 1904 except for the period when the Brazilian, Joao Havelange, took the presidency from Englishman, Sir Stanley Rous.

Sir Stanley was something of an old-guard purist and even in 1974 the tide in the game was already flowing swiftly in a certain direction, and the old English gentleman could not stem that tide. It was a natural progression for big money to come into football and Havelange was a huge proponent of that new trend.
Interestingly, it is this trend of big money that eventually gave rise to the massive corruption ravaging the game today, so much so that the need for a clean break had become not only imperative but urgent.
And this freshness can come from Africa, indeed should come from Africa. CAF is made up of 54 national associations same as UEFA. CONCACAF has 41 members, while AFC has 41 affiliates. CONMEBOL has 10 members with Oceania weighing in with 14. So in terms of numerical consideration, Africa is well placed.
Again, it is consistent with FIFA’s policy of inclusiveness, of ensuring that all the confederations are carried along. It is this same policy that ensured Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010 and it is also the reason the competition would be staged in the near east, Qatar specifically, in 2022.
The African Mundial in South Africa in 2010 was widely acknowledged as a huge success and the man who made it happen, Danny Jordaan, is an option that can mount the African challenge. But he has not shown any interest.
So the lot fell on Nigeria, not only because of its position on the continent but more as a result of the fact that two of its citizens had already shown more than a passing interest. Ex-international, Segun Odegbami, had already thrown his hat into the ring for the game’s top position. The second is Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu.
Although he has not publicly declared his intention as yet, the avalanche of appeals for him to do so are such that would be decisive at some point. The reason for these appeals is not far-fetched. At all levels of the administration of the game what is required are people with proven managerial and business acumen who can provide the much needed leadership.
Apart from having been a chief executive of a state, Abia, in South East Nigeria for eight years, Kalu has a string of businesses he has managed with huge success. The bane of the game had been the mistake of entrusting such sensitive positions to anybody who has shown some passion for the sport. That has not been enough apparently. Football is big business and those who have shown they can run big businesses, who have managed businesses successfully for many years, should be entrusted with the task of administering the beautiful game. That is the reason chief executives of English Premier League clubs for instance are, in the main, proven managers and businessmen.
Kalu had also demonstrated his passion for football; as governor of Abia State he superintended over the emergence of Enyimba as a force on the continent. The club not only won the in 2003 the CAF Champions League that had eluded Nigeria for 39 years, it successfully defended it the following year. Not even the more traditional sides like Enugu Rangers, IICC Shooting Stars (as it then was), Bendel Insurance, could achieve that singular distinction until Kalu rode into town with Enyimba.
It was not rocket science, but Kalu was almost prescient in the way he went about it. He had a firm belief that with solid leadership so much could be achieved. Add this to his feel for the politics of the game and the outcome was certain.
But the latter has been one area where Nigeria has lagged behind for decades. Considering its size and potential the nation has never realised the importance of seriously playing the politics of sports; the upshot being that Nigeria never really had representation in many continental sporting associations. The disadvantages of this remiss have been colossal.
This negligence is not restricted to sports. For instance the African Development Bank (AfDB) was founded in 1963 and Nigeria has been one of its biggest financiers, yet for decades the country couldn’t attain the presidency of the continental economic development body.
This was due to a combination of indifference, and lack of concerted effort even where there was some interest. But a Nigerian, Akinwumi Adesina, finally became the president of the AfDB after elections earlier in the year, and it shows what can be achieved when there is a collective and rigorous effort. President Muhammadu Buhari was involved from the get-go; he played the politics and wooed other African countries to support Adesina’s candidacy.
That is the spirit and it won’t be out of place for the president to be similarly involved when Kalu decides to pick the gauntlet. Nigeria needs to step to the plate as they say in baseball and begin to play in the big leagues. It won’t do for compatriots to shoot down the intention of Kalu or Odegbami for that matter. Already, some people have been trenchant in their dismissal of the very idea of Kalu running for FIFA presidency, asking why? But the real question is why not? The worst kind of censure is self-censure.
Thankfully, however, no less a personality than Dr. Amos Adamu, a former CAF and FIFA executive committee member has thrown his weight behind Kalu’s bid.
Adamu said: “Nigerians must accept the fact that we have people who can aspire to the highest positions in the world in all spheres of life. One of those rare persons is Orji Uzor Kalu, who has proven to be a world-class personality in everything he laid his hands on from politics to sports and business.

Politics / Oyegun Begs Judiciary To Deal With Corruption Cases Quickly by jeff500: 8:55am On Sep 22, 2015
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has called on the judiciary to come up with better ways of dealing with already established cases of corruption.
The party leader made this remark at the post-investiture reception for Dr. Muiz Banire as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, in Abuja on Monday.
According to him, some cases in Nigeria would require a system, which would deal with such cases expeditiously in order to prevent people who had stolen so much from the system from using part of their loot to escape justice.

The party chairman said, “There must be easier way; there must be either decisive justice, real justice without defeating the purpose of justice and without defeating the means to reform our society.
“Reform we must; and that reform must permeate all sectors of the economy and the polity.
“The matter today is corruption and if we do not have the way that corruption cases can be treated or heard and disposed off quickly and particularly in circumstance where today when we talk of corruption, we are not talking of a few millions of naira, we are not talking of five per cent; we are talking about something approaching trillions.
“These people can keep us in court all year long and for many years. In cases that are very obvious, very clear that if you total everything it would be what one would have earned in all his life time and if he comes ten times over to the world there is no way he could have accumulated the kind of wealth he has, particularly for people in public service.
“What is serious is that in a period like this when we want to change the society and change the society quickly, it is important that it is in tandem with the Judicial system,” he said.

Politics / Buhari To Show Ministers List This Week by jeff500: 4:23pm On Sep 21, 2015
Baring last minute change, President Muhammadu Buhari may likely shows his long-awaited cabinet this week,
The President has been facing public criticisms, especially from the opposition over his refusal to name his ministers three months after assuming office.
The president has been calling on Nigerians to bear with him till the end of this month to enable him pick credible persons who will work with him.
However, latest report available to indicates that the Department of State Services is done with the screening and the ministerial nominees might likely emerge this week.
A top presidency source hinted that the delay in the release of the ministers might not be unconnected with the fact that some persons were found wanting during the exercise.
“President Buhari is a just man who wants to get his things right. He was careful enough not to appoint anyone who might disgrace or dent his hard-earned name and reputation. The major reason for the delay was because some persons earlier nominated failed the DSS screening.
“The president believes that it is better to have the list late than to come out with some persons that would disgrace his government,” the source said.
Asked when the list would be finally unveiled, the source who would not want his name in print said before Friday.
“I can assure you that before Friday the ministerial nominees would be unveiled.
The DSS is done with the screening as we speak”, he said.
On whether the list circulating in the media was truly those that might make president Buhari’s cabinet, the source hinted, “you should be careful not to swallow everything you see. There are several names circulating on the social media but I urge you to wait until the president makes it public.”

Maiduguri: Troops of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, on Friday identified a business centre around the popular and busiest Post Office area of the state capital who specialize in the production of fake National Identity Cards ( NIDC) and other documents for Boko Haram terrorists.
The business centre before its identification by the military was being operated/managed by one Mr. John Zakariya and another Mallam Makinta Umar who are now in the custody of the military and assisting them with useful information.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Colonel Tukur Gusau, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations.
Gusau in the statement said “the arrest of the accomplices were made possible after a Boko Haram Terrorist who was earlier arrested confessed to Joint Investigation Centre that the suspected persons were in the business of producing ID cards for the terrorists group.
“The items recovered from the accomplices include; computer laptops, memory sticks, still camera among others.
” During preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the accomplices produce fake National Identity Cards and other documents for the terrorists in a Business Centre located in Maiduguri.
“These documents enable the terrorists to move freely to various destinations and carry out their terrorists activities, killing and inflicting hardship on law abiding citizens of the country.
“The documents also facilitate the smooth movement of the terrorists to neighbouring countries to network with other terrorists.
“This act by the accomplices is detrimental to the ongoing effort of the various security agencies under Operation Lafiya Dole”. Gusau’s statement added.
The statement however insisted that the arrested accomplices will be handed over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation and prosecution.

Politics / Exxonmobil–ex-militants Threaten We Go To Disturb Activities In Akwa Ibom Airpor by jeff500: 1:49pm On Sep 19, 2015
Militants under the aegis of Bakassi Freedom Fighters have threatened to disrupt activities at Ibom International Airport, ExxonMobil, as well as vandalize pipelines from Frontier Oil Limited in Akwa Ibom State. Commander Ebong Friday, the group’s spokesperson made this known on Friday in Eket, Eket Local Government Area of the state at a meeting with his members, saying the state government has neglected its members since the time they dropped their arms in the wake of the Federal Government Amnesty Programme to pursue peace. “The group has given the Akwa Ibom State governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, a 1-week ultimatum to empower his members in the youth
empowerment programme or risk dire consequences,” Friday said. “It is very unfortunate,” Friday continued, “that the state government is taking us for granted. We dropped our arms in the course of the Presidential Amnesty Programme and chose to embrace peace. “We voluntarily dropped our arms to embrace peace after the Akwa Ibom State Government called for amnesty and we surrendered our arms with an agreement that they would train us and integrate us, so that we could achieve what they had promised us, but they turned their backs on us,” he stressed. “We went to Obubra for training and came back to the state but the state government is yet to sort us out. “About 950 members of the group are yet to be integrated and documented in the Federal Government amnesty programmes,” the group spokesperson lamented.

It’s a low-end, budget phone, and this means you can’t compare it with mid-range devices as lots of people often attempt. I’ve been using the phone for about two weeks and for the price it goes for, I can say it isn’t bad. The device isn’t perfect just like most phones we’ve reviewed and in this review, we will try to weigh the pros and cons to see if the price is justified.

Politics / Disaster Develops In PDP Over Planned Reforms by jeff500: 6:33pm On Sep 17, 2015
A fresh crisis is brewing among the members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on how to reposition the party.
While a group known as the PDP National Reform Conference, which is headed by a former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, is planning to hold a conference on how to reform the party, the members of the party’s National Working Committee have said the conference must not hold.

In a statement signed by the PDP National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, the NWC said the reform conference must be postponed in order “to create room for further consultations and exhaustive consideration by critical stakeholders on the report of the PDP post-election Assessment committee, headed by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, which is due for submission this month.”
The reform conference has been slated for October.
However, Gana said his group received its mandate from the national caucus of the party and the party’s Board of Trustees to hold the conference.
According to Gana, some of the issues to be considered by the conference include the best ways to “reignite the noble ideals and good image of the PDP and restore the party’s core values and principles.”
The committee, he added, would also generate fresh ideas on “people-oriented programmes for ensuring good governance, development, human security, social justice, equity and fairness.”
The conference committee, which also has Chief Raymond Dokpesi as a member had, on Tuesday, inaugurated various sub-committees to prepare for the reform conference.
However, members of the NWC stayed away from the International Conference Centre, Abuja, where the members of the PDP reform conference committees met.
Twenty-four hours after the committees were inaugurated, the NWC came up with a statement postponing the reform conference indefinitely.
Since the PDP lost the general election the NWC had failed to call for the quarterly meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee.
A member of the party’s NEC, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, said that the NWC “is apprehensive that they may be sacked by the NEC over the role they played in the shameful outing of the party during the election and this informed their decision to keep the NEC meeting in abeyance.”

Politics / Nigeria Can’t Carry On Mono Product Economy – Osinbajo by jeff500: 6:22pm On Sep 17, 2015
Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President,on Thursday, expressed the readiness of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to diversify the nation’s economy against the over-dependence on oil.
Speaking in Lagos, at the 6th National Conference of the Academy For Entrepreneurial Studies (AES), with theme: “Diversification: Roadmap to Nigeria’s Economic Recovery,” Osinbajo, noted that diversification and the nation’s economic recovery captures the major challenges the Buhari administration is poised to address.
The conference was chaired by former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (retd.).
Vice President Osinbajo, who was represented by a Director at the Ministry of Labour & Productivity, Mrs. Maureen Ovie, however, expressed worry that agriculture and mining, which were the primary drivers of Nigeria’s economy, have been abandoned since the 70s for crude oil, adding that this now makes the country a virtual mono-product economy.

Sports / Cristiano Ronaldo Still Has His Feel by jeff500: 10:43am On Sep 17, 2015
Madrid:
Next time, wait a little longer before wondering whether Cristiano Ronaldo has lost his scoring touch.
It turns out the Real Madrid striker is just fine.
After an unusually barren start to his season, Ronaldo came alive in the last two games, scoring eight goals.

He netted five against Espanyol in the Spanish league on Saturday, and three more in a 4-0 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday.
It was enough to make him Real Madrid's all-time leading scorer in the Liga, and move him ahead of Lionel Messi as the top scorer in the European tournament.
Ronaldo said he feels "very proud and happy with this moment."

Politics / Governor Simon Lalong Calls For Calm In Plateau by jeff500: 9:48am On Sep 17, 2015
Jos:
Following the hostilities on Tuesday night in the border communities of Mangu and Barkin Ladi local government areas of Plateau, Governor Simon Lalong has called for calm on the part of residents.
Lalong, in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Emmanuel Nanle, appealed to all residents to embrace peace and not take laws into their hands while reporting suspicious movements to security agencies.

He said the unfortunate attacks, which claimed many lives and properties, took place at the border communities of Kadunu and Fan of Mangu and Barkin local government areas respectively.
Lalong stated that it was regrettable that as government made efforts to ensure the end of violent conflicts in Barkin Ladi, Riyom and some parts of Jos South Local Government, the state was faced with another communal crisis.
He, however, commended the security agencies for their prompt response in curtailing the escalation of the situation and also charged them to do the needful to forestall future occurrences.
Lalong also commended the management of Jos University Teaching Hospital and Comprehensive Centre in Gindiri for providing medical services to the injured.
The governor directed the State Emergency Management Agency to as a matter of urgency provide relief materials to all those affected.

Politics / Osun PDP Accuses Aregbesola Of Paying N20bn To Road Contractor by jeff500: 9:40pm On Sep 14, 2015
OSUN State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Governor Rauf Aregbesola of paying N20 billion from the N35 billion bailout fund he received from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to a road contractor at the expense of paying the state workers’ salary arrears.
The party alleged that the said money was paid to the contractor last week.
According to a statement by the state PDP’s Director of Media and Strategy, Prince Diran Odeyemi in Osogbo, on Sunday, the party accused Aregbesola of misplacing his priority by diverting part of the bail out fund to pay the company handling the Osogbo Ring Road project at a time the workers are wallowing in abject poverty owing to unpaid salaries.
“We have it on good authority that the payment was effected last week Thursday and we have noticed that the contractor has returned to site with its men and equipment within 24 hours as requested by the governor,” the statement said.
The party alleged further that the N35 billion bailout had since been lodged in two banks adding that while the amount lodged in one of the banks is in a fixed deposit account, as earlier alleged by the party, the other part of the money had been withdrawn from another bank to pay the company said to have a very strong link to a Presidency figure.

Politics / MADE: Experiment In Helping The Poor by jeff500: 3:51pm On Sep 14, 2015

Interesting experiment in helping the poor worth copying by other NGOs is currently taking place in the nine states of the Niger Delta region of our country. The experiment has been initiated and is being run by an NGO called Market for Development (MADE) Project in the Niger Delta. MADE is a DFID-funded intervention agency whose main goal is to help create market and provide other critical help for poor farmers, fishermen and other unskilled workers engaged in agriculture, fishing and other means of livelihood in the Niger Delta. The NGO commenced its operations last year and its efforts consist of linking farmers to new and improved technology; new markets for their products and better ways of improving their agricultural or fishing practices in order to earn higher yields and subsequently, higher incomes. Its core concern is to particularly help farmers engaged in cassava, oil palm and fishing and fish processing and the core goal is to improve the overall socio-economic circumstances of the target beneficiary groups.

MADE also seeks to develop linkages or build partnerships among them. For example, poorer farmers are linked to richer ones; fish smokers are linked to modern kiln fabricators and oil processors to improved oil processing equipment makers for mutually beneficial relationships. Currently, the commonest oil palm processing technologies fabricators make for the processors in the region is an engine powered digester and manual press which is inefficient and leads to 25-50% loss of oil. Many smallholder processors are not aware of an improved equipment designed by the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) called the Small Scale Processing Equipment (SSPE) which is capable of extracting more oil and reducing the time spent on processing.

Politics / There Are Worrisome Signs In President Buhari’s Govt –adebanjo by jeff500: 3:39pm On Sep 14, 2015
PA Ayo Adebanjo, one of the top leaders of Afenifere, a pan Yoruba group and member of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), is a fearless nationalist. At 87, Pa Adebanjo monitors every happening in Nigeria and gives his opinions on issues frankly. In this interview, the statesman examined some steps so far taken by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari especially, some key government officials, the fight against corruption and planned probe of the Jonathan administration. He submitted that the President will succeed in reinventing the country if he purges himself of dictatorship and tribalistic tendencies even as he urged him to go beyond APC in assembling the individuals to work with.
Looking at Nigeria now, how would you assess the incumbent administration, would you say the nation is moving in the direction that you expect?
In short, they are serving below expectation, but it has not really got to the stage it can be condemned. There are certain signs that are worrisome. I was not a supporter of Buhari because of what I know about him which I said before the election . As I have told some journalists, I still want him to prove me wrong.
What are those worrisome signs?
I’m not interested in confirming what I have said because if he proves me right, it is not to the advantage of Nigeria because I accused him of being a dictator, against the rule of law and being tribalistic.
For him to prove me right will not be good for the nation. I want him to prove me wrong by doing the opposite of what I said he would do .
The appointments he has made so far are terribly lopsided . Those of us who fought for independence know that the crux of our matter is that Nigeria’s federation is lopsided . There was a time when the North was supposed to be bigger than the South put together . That was rectified by the 1954 constitution. When we went to the London Constitutional Conference, after that conference, the three regions then became really federal. That was the time premiership was created in the constitution. Before then, under the McPherson Constitution, it is either the majority party in each region; East, West and the South were known as bigger opponent because it was a loose central. But after the Constitutional Conference of 1958, when we now moved the motion for self-government and the western region withdrew its ministers from the centre which was what caused the constitutional crisis of 1957, things changed .

Sports / Eagles’ Boss Can’t Continue To Ignore Man City Star– Ndubuoke by jeff500: 3:10pm On Sep 14, 2015
Nigerian youth international, Kelechi Iheanacho, yesterday underscored with his performance, why Super Eagles manager, Sunday Oliseh can not continue to ignore him as he (Oliseh) settles down to his new job.
Iheanacho who made his EPL debut a fortnight ago in the game against Watford was on fire yesterday as he banged in the only goal that saw City continue it’s 100% start to the season with an away victory over Crystal Palace.

Iheanacho who just like in the game against Watford came in as a late second half sub stabbed home his first senior goal after Samir Nasri’s shot was saved.
Oliseh, it would be noted, did not look Iheanacho’s way in the game against Tanzania preferring instead to call up four Russia-based players. Former Nigeria Football Association (NFA) board member, Fan Ndubuoke moments after yesterday’s game said Oliseh can’t continue to overlook Iheanacho who he noted is ripe for Eagles’ shirt. full story http://ogudos..com.ng/2015/09/eagles-boss-cant-continue-to-ignore-man.html

Sports / Harry Kane Hopes To Take Euro Form To Club by jeff500: 1:08pm On Sep 10, 2015

Harry is hoping to repeat his international form for Tottenham Hotspur when the Premier League continues this weekend and has set his sights on overhauling Wayne Rooney's newly established England scoring record.
The Manchester captain broke Bobby Charlton's record when he smashed home an 84th minute penalty to notch his 50th England goal in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday.
Harry scored the third goal of his burgeoning international career to break Switzerland's stubborn resistance in the 67th minute before Rooney sealed a 2-0 victory, England's eighth win in as many Group E games.
The Tottenham striker was a second-half substitute and found the back of the net 10 minutes after coming on to earn his fourth England cap with a smart left-footed finish from Luke Shaw's low cross. Read More

Sports / David De Gea Plan To Win Back Manchester Spot by jeff500: 12:53pm On Sep 10, 2015

De Gea is hoping to win back his place in goal at Manchester after he played his first competitive match this season in Spain's 1-0 Euro 2016 qualifying victory away to Macedonia on Tuesday.
Coach Vicente del Bosque gave De Gea a vote of confidence by selecting him ahead of captain Iker Casillas for the match in Skopje, when Spain's comfortable win thanks to an own goal put the holders two points clear at the top of Group C and close to securing their berth at the finals in France next year.
De Gea's planned move to Real Madrid fell through in farcical fashion last week when the paperwork was delivered too late and United coach Louis van Gaal has not used him this season while the transfer sage dragged on.
"I felt good, I really wanted to play," De Gea, who had little to do during the game, told Spanish television.
"Now I need to keep working and see if I have some good fortune at my club as well," added the 24-year-old former Atletico Madrid keeper.
"My future will be the same as now: remain calm, keep working and improving. In concrete terms, enjoy my football. I am happy."
Spain, who have not conceded a goal in six qualifiers, lead the section on 21 points, two ahead of Slovakia who were held to a 0-0 draw at home on Tuesday by an Ukrainian side further three points behind in third.
