Culture / What Is The Significance Of "Cake" In A Traditional Marriage? by Jerri(f): 7:47am On Jul 13, 2013
Good morning y'all, just wondering what the significance of having a cake is when it comes to traditional marriages.... Getting hitched soon (trad) and don't want one....neither does my fiancé are we wrong here?

I may be completely wrong but I soooo don't get/believe the story. Kinda sounds weird to me, first thing that popped was - what if her identity has been changed to keep the media away? But then again the hospital was revealed....Hummmmm.......but if she "truly" died then oh well, such a bummer!

Pacemaker:
What was your major, if I may ask? Some one raised a critical question, which were 401k ,pension....Are you willing to sacrifice those and suffer the consequence later on in life?I do believe you understand the cost of health care in states for non insured? Nigeria is a consumer market and that's why Chinese and Indians
flood the country with all kinds of consumer goods.
While you are in Nigeria, apply for companies like google, Microsoft, Cisco these companies may have good retirement benefit for their Nigeria based employees. I would like to do my NYSC just for the experience, also but.......
My g aunt is 82 years old, she has been in the US for 25 baby sitting all her grand kids, ask her to move back
to Nigeria she will insult you. Check rigzone for foreign jobs also .

Hey Pacemaker - My major - Business management and Finance (Undergrad), Strategic Marketing (Grad school). Yeah, a good point was raised about future savings plan; I already have a Roth IRA in place and quite ready to make annual contributions when necessary and when that time comes. Now, I'm also a savvy saver so I sort of have an outlook of a variable retirement plan. And God bless my soul! I completely forgot all about the most important! Health care....oops! These are the things I actually need at the moment to make the right decision and I sincerely thank you and "InvertedHammer" for redirecting my thought process.

Lol at your aunt, like the saying goes " what the old see standing, we can’t see sitting" or something along that line smiley, I will have to restrategize properly. But sincerely, 20yrs from now? I would love to be in Nigeria contributing my quota of some sort.....There’s so much to be done in this country, who do we leave it up to when we are the future leaders of tomorrow? Yes, a lot of people have been oppressed for speaking out the truth in the face of corruption but do we just fold our hands and say oh well, its Nigeria?

Many thanks for the website recommendation smiley
NYSC / Re: Question For Foreign Trained Graduates/ Corpers by Jerri(f): 11:04pm On Oct 30, 2012
A big thank you to everyone! Most of your replies made me laugh so much after such a difficult Tuesday smiley. I truly appreciate. I'm a little shy of few months to rounding up, so am 97% excited! Now, it was a hassle getting me to come do the service at all and I'm currently holding a cursade to encourage others to come get it done as we never know what tomorrow holds.

On a more serious note, it's not been a glorious experience being home for my service year as i sometimes completely feel laid back and kinda weary about policies and how things are done here but I realize that we are all different and I aso see a lot of opportunities in the Nigerian market. Thanks "Pacemaker", I will lean towards your advice and the wonderful ones I have received.

God knows - no more banking for me (in my opinion, #1 career to mess with the head if you are with a company that is trying so hard to be #1 and nothing else matters but bottomline). With that said and armed with all everyone has said, I feel more intune with reality and hope to provide updates in a couple of months if God willing.

Thanks once again smiley

NYSC / Question For Foreign Trained Graduates/ Corpers by Jerri(f): 12:12am On Oct 19, 2012
Hello, this question is directed to all foreign trained graduates, who have come home for the National Youth Service,

Question: What decisions have you made for life after your service year, i.e., are you going back abroad or will you rather secure a job here in Nigeria? The reason why I'm asking is this, I'm finding it so difficult making my mind up on staying back and getting a job here though I'm fully aware of the global economy and job situation abroad and of course in Nigeria too. I completed my graduate studies before coming home for my service and have worked for several years with the retail and banking sector in Europe and N. America. I hold a dual citizenship (just in case you wonder what my options are). I just feel I will benefit from other opinions....shoot I feel my brain has been so fired lately!

Thanks for your time.....

Cool! I hope you're still available in Abuja smiley. Am 30 with my ever youthful body (thanks to good genes, holistic practice and yoga too)
Health / Re: Yoga In Abuja. by Jerri(f): 4:44am On Jun 15, 2012
I can certainly attest to that, judging from my stress level, general well-being and talk about flexibility to do *stuff* hehehe.. Yoga is very good for people with asthma as breathing exercises helps open the airways. Triple <3 yoga!
Travel / Re: Is There Yoga In Nigeria by Jerri(f): 4:21am On Jun 15, 2012
@poster, Jesusesdio, thanks for the info! Yoga has helped me in several ways, moving home for a short period (8months)and was kind of concerned about not doing something that keeps me sane smiley

Thanks for the heads up guys, I will be careful.... smiley #LoveLife#

@ londoner; thanks for all the information, I'm actually having a good time, now looking forward to my road trip to Obudu.

.......Funny how most of us don’t get to see/visit the natural resources God endowed us with (I must confess, this is my first time attempting to visit places in Nigeria apart from the areas I was brought up in, not out of fear but lack of interest). We should try other parts of 9ja for now and upload beautiful pictures to promote our country and its image*ourselves*

Have a lovely weekend y’all and stay safe

Woooohoooo! You guys a simply the best!!!! Thanks a mill for the time taken to upload pics and directions. I promise to provide updates before the end of May 2012 smiley

Thanks once again! Love the pic on wikki warm springs but with the security situation ahome.....I will leave that till some other time.

04/2012 - Silverbird Cinema (y) - I went to see *Phone Swap* by Kunle Afolayan. Comment on movie? Hmmm, quite interesting, the dude at the ticket desk reminded me twice that it was a Nigerian movie and I smiled (anything to get me out of the house hehehehe). Also did a lil bit of window shopping and items were quite pricey.....

05/2012 - Visit to the wildlife park (actually National Children’s Park and Zoo Abuja) was 'okay', I enjoyed the scenery but those animals are 98% starved! Smh, what will it take to keep the few animals healthy? I saw one Zebra, one hungry looking Camel, several monkeys (not more than ten) with some looking so pathetic, a Python, hungry, hungry and hungry horses (about four of them) and three ostriches....there may be more but I only saw these animals. The lake is beautiful! There is also a playground for kids, a food stand with meat pie, donut, drinks, pop corn and peppered meat. Ticket for adults cost N200 each and I think N100 for kids. There is also a toilet there (didn’t go in).....

Ceddi Plaza is beautiful! We were fortunate to be entertained by a guitarist with an amazing voice smiley

Hello everyone,

I am spending three weeks in Abuja and plan to have a good time during the day and early evening. Where are some of the attractive places to visit?
- I love to take pictures, thought of visiting Obudu ranch but will rather avoid the cost and spread my visit across board....
- And something that involves a couple.

Thanks for your time!
Politics / Re: Pastor Bakare Revolutionary Speech! - Nigerians Are Idiots Ruled By Fools! by Jerri(f): 5:18am On Aug 31, 2011
While the speech sounds accurate in some stance, I don’t believe it’s the right time to incite sentiments across board.  I believe the president need to crack down on what’s happening at the moment but also know such comments/speeches will never get us anywhere.  And for all you calling for revolution, have you seen the state of economy in the countries that have already revolutionized? I have nothing major to say to this speech because we all have the freedom of speech and of course my knowledge of "touch not my anointed".

We once lived in a society where we were each other's keeper, communities helped raise kids, yes we have been blinded by greed but we need a way forward.  All elders, be it deacons, community leaders and all the likes need to sit up and arrive at a strategy to cub this nonsense once and for all.  I mean where will the call for revolution take us? Further killing of innocent souls? Take a look at Libya and Syria and decide if that’s what you want (I don’t even think Mr. Jonathan will be that strong headed anyway, )

I must have missed something but I sincerely wonder why we haven’t heard more leaders commending such acts as those happening around us today.

*The irony of life* we see some nations spend billions to protect its own, infrastructure and public from natural disasters and here we are forcing and condoning man-made disasters.  I weep for my country.
NYSC / Re: Best Companies To Do Nysc With: by Jerri(f): 1:37am On Aug 22, 2011
Woooh! So much for a simple question asked. Thanks to some of the intelligent directions (much appreciated). I guess you would wonder why am only considering service at 29, well, its never been my intention to work in Nigeria but then one can never tell what will happen in a few years, hence my question, no pun intended.
NYSC / Best Companies To Do Nysc With: by Jerri(f): 2:14pm On Jul 11, 2011
Hello friends,

**********Where are some of the best places to spend the service year in Nigeria (NYSC)? I'm not implying a long-term career retention (quite likely) but somewhere I can be valued as an intern/employee who is willing to learn and contribute to the organizations culture and have a good time while at it.

**********Your inputs are greatly appreciated. I'm looking at 'Batch C'. Place of interest is Abuja. I currently have a strong background in the banking and telecommunications sector and also cause-related marketing with non-profit organizations. Expertise includes consumer retention and acquisition (general customer relationship management experience). 29yrs old female.

**************************Thank Y'all

deniyor:

I disagree with a lot of opinions in here. Your story does not indicate in anyway that the dude does not love you. Yes he had some kind of brief relationship with your sister and as a result your sis doesn't approve of your relationship. But that isn't a big deal. Your sister is married, and is living her life. This is your own life, yours to live and enjoy. If you love this guy and he loves you, go ahead with it. Forget your sister's misgivings. She did not seek your approval to date her husband or to marry him. She made her choice and supposedly forsook all others, including your current.

You should be matured enough to handle a relationship by now. You should know that there should be some seperation btw your relationship and your family. You should tell your sister to mind her business and her marriage. It is your life. You will be the one to live with whoever you choose not your family. You will also be the one to suffer loneliness or pain if you made the wrong choice.

So my dear, choose based on whether the guy is the one for you, not what your family feels or who has slept with who. We all have pasts. Thats why its called a past. Focus on the present and the future.

Thank you!

Tiana155:

Think about FAMILY VALUE. He has slept with your sister is a lifetime-stigma, that will always be at the back of your mind whelther you like it or not, even though you said you stil love him. And if you want to go ahead with him just because you are in a desperate need to have a man in your life. FAMILY VALUE is very important. Dont let your man cause pain between you and your sister, find a way to make peace with your sister and listen to her. Goodluck.

Tiana, family values will live on, but trust me am tired of this desperate tag, I am not!

Akainzo:

@jmaine, thanks for the sense of maturity.

@OP, the world doesn't end because someone you love once had a tryst with a relative or a close friend. Yes it is hard to stomach and could be an emotional drain, but once you accept that your love for him is greater, things can only lead to more happiness.
Nothing says the two of them would get back together again and nothing says they wouldn't, but all the same he loves you enough to open up to you, and that can only be because he truly and genuinely loves you.

The choice is yours but make it sensibly.

True talk, thanks

Thanks ladies, I truly appreciate your input. I know there will be a lot of bad blood flowing even if it works out or not. But like you rightly said, family and values for myself matters a lot. Gee, life can be unfair sometimes cry but I trust in God. Quite sad that I kept this bottled up so this long,
