Career / 3 Mistakes Successful People Don't Make by jimino(m): 5:40pm On Jul 25, 2014 |
There are a lot of things that contribute to success. But a few things are universal barriers to achieving it, says Bernard Marr, a bestselling business author and global enterprise performance expert, in a recent LinkedIn post. Falling into these traps can put "roadblocks on your path to success," he explains. In Marr's observation of successful people, he has noticed a few mistakes that they tend to avoid. Here are three of them: Mistake No. 1: Following the trends. In the words of Jack Kerouac, "Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion." Marr says we often feel like we have to jump at every new development, and try every new "thing." "We sometimes call it 'shiny object syndrome,'" he says. "But jumping at every new thing will leave no time to develop the deep understanding that pursuing lifelong learning might." Instead of buying into the latest trends, focus your energy on understanding the root of what you hope to succeed at, and ignore the rest, he says. "For example, if you hope to succeed in sales or marketing, you might choose to study human psychology rather than the latest social media marketing schemes." Mistake No. 2: Refusing to take responsibility. "One of the first things you will notice that successful people don't have is a blaming or victim mentality," Marr says. When things go awry, successful people won't say, "I couldn't succeed because of X," or, "It's actually John's fault." Instead, they take responsibility and own their mistakes. "I believe the key here is that by owning a mistake, we are more likely to learn from it and much less likely to repeat it," he says. Mistake No. 3: Trying to go it alone. One of the most critical things successful people do is surround themselves with other successful people, Marr explains. "No man is an island, and having a network, [or] a mastermind group, surround oneself with clever people can make all the difference between success and failure." Marr says avoiding these mistakes can help you succeed at work, or a single goal or task — but to be truly successful, you also need to be happy. "Only when you make happiness and balance a goal can you truly succeed in any other area of your life," he concludes. Career / 7 Things Successful People Never Say by jimino(m): 5:24pm On Jul 25, 2014 |
You'll never catch a successful person saying, "It's not fair." Over 2,500 years ago, philosopher and poet Lao Tzu taught that our words become actions, which eventually become our destiny. Regardless of how you may define success, words will help manifest that vision into reality. "There are also words and phrases that can damage your self-image, mar your reputation, and jeopardize your success," Price says. "To optimize your success, eliminate this language from your vocabulary and never speak it to yourself or another person." Here are 17 phrases successful people never say: Regardless of how you may define success, words will help manifest that vision into reality. "There are also words and phrases that can damage your self-image, mar your reputation, and jeopardize your success," Price says. "To optimize your success, eliminate this language from your vocabulary and never speak it to yourself or another person." Here are 17 phrases successful people never say: 1. "I have no choice," or, "I had no choice." "Successful people always see the options, regardless of the circumstances," Price says. "To say we have no choice in the matter implies that we perceive ourselves as a victim; that we are less powerful than our environment." These weak words relieve the speaker of all responsibility. Successful people say: "I have a choice," "Here are our options," or, "Let's imagine all the possibilities." They know that claiming and exercising the power to choose is the first step toward achieving their goals, she says. 2. "I should have," or, "I could have." The words "should," "could," and "ought" imply regret, blame, finger-pointing, and fault, whether you say them to yourself or another person. "Successful people don't wallow in the past, and they rarely regret a decision or action," says Price. "Even if it's deemed a failure by others, they accept it as a learning experience that gets them one step closer to their goal." Similarly, they avoid: "You should have," and, "You could have." "There's no quicker way to upset a boss, colleague, or customer than to suggest they're guilty of something (even if they are)." Instead, take a collaborative approach. Say, "Please help me understand why…" or, "Next time may we adopt an alternative approach…" 3. "I can't do that," or, "That's impossible," or, "That can't be done." Not only are these words self-limiting, others perceive them as pessimistic, unconstructive, even defeatist, Price explains. "Achievers know there are countless roadblocks on the road to success — barriers that may stall or stump, but never stop them." They either remove the barrier, or figure out a way to go over, under, or around it. The words "can't" or "impossible" rarely enter the minds of successful people. "Instead of throwing in the towel," Price says, "they speak in terms of alternative ways to get the work accomplished: 'What I can do is...' 'I'm sure there's a way to...' 'Instead of ___, let's try___.'" As the great industrialist Henry Ford said, "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't — you're right." 4. "That's not my job," or, "I don't get paid enough for this," or, "That's not my problem." Successful people help others succeed. As billionaire Warren Buffett says, "Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." "Think of 'planting trees' as your job," Price says. "If you're asked to do something by your boss, coworker, or a customer, it's because it's important to them. Therefore, as a team player, goal No. 1 is to figure out how to help them get it accomplished." Even if it's not in your job description, by saying so displays a career-limiting bad attitude. Even if your boss lays an unreasonable request on your desk, reply positively by saying, "Sure, I'll be glad to help you accomplish that. Given my current tasks of A, B, and C, which one of these would you like to place on back-burner while I work on this new assignment?" "This response clearly communicates a prioritized workload, alongside a willing attitude to help," she says. 5. "But we've always done it that way," or, "That's not the way we do it here." Successful people are passionate about innovation, finding a better way of doing something. In fact, Steve Jobs said, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." For this reason, effective managers value employees who demonstrate creative thinking, flexibility, and problem-solving skill, Price explains. "These phrases, in one fell swoop, reveal you are the opposite: stuck in the past, inflexible, and closed-minded," she says. "Even if you disagree with someone's idea, say instead, 'Wow, that's an interesting idea. How would that work?' Or, 'That's a different approach. Let's discuss the pros and cons.'" 6. "It's not fair." She got a raise, you didn't. He was recognized, you weren't. That department is receiving funding, yours isn't. "Injustices happen on the job and in the world every day," she says. "Successful people are proactive about issues versus reactive. Instead of complaining or whining, take action: document the facts, build a case, and present an intelligent argument to the person or group that can help you." 7. "He's a jerk," or, "She's lazy," or, "My job stinks," or, "I hate this company." Successful people avoid words of judgment, insult, and negativity, says Price. "Regardless of your feelings or the circumstances, avoid making unconstructive or judgmental statements that convey a negative attitude toward people or your job." If a genuine complaint or issue needs to be brought to someone's attention, do so with well-documented facts, tact, consideration, and neutrality. "Nothing tanks a career faster than name-calling or mudslinging," she says. "Not only does it reveal juvenile immaturity, it's language that may be libel and fire-able." Successful people choose words carefully to state observable facts and avoid disparaging language. |

THE STORY CONTINUES: Meanwhile, Shekarau has continued to hobnob with the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which Kwankwaso left to join the APC. Yesterday, the former governor hosted a delegation of Kano PDP elders, led by Ambassador Aminu Wali. Wali said during the visit that they were at Shekarau’s house to show their appreciation of his leadership in the state, despite their political differences. He said they decided to visit to the former governor to foster understanding and to plead with him to cooperate with them in ensuring a better Kano State. In his remark, Shekarau said he felt honoured by the visit. “As a stakeholder in this state, my house is open to all concerned citizens of this state. Our vision is to see a better Kano State, and I repeat I will gladly be part of any movement to ensure that. I will always be part of such movement even if I am not there physically,” he said. Others on the PDP delegation are Alhaji Mohammed Abacha, Alhaji Dauda Dan Galan and Senator Hamisu Musa. But soon after the meeting, a spokesman for Shekarau said the former governor had no plans to defect to the PDP. Malam Sule Yau Sule told Daily Trust by telephone yesterday: “There was no time that His Excellency (Shekarau) met anyone to defect from APC let alone making such declaration. He is not known for such kind of frivolity. He is a democrat and would not dump or destroyed the APC house he worked to build. “There was no truth in those kind of reports that Mallam Shekarau is defecting. Those kind of reports should be ignored. He remained the leader of our party in Kano and also a national leader.” SOURCE : http://www.osundefender.org/?p=142714 |
Politics / Shekarau, Bafarawa Shun APC Leaders. by jimino(m): 10:46am On Jan 03, 2014 |
The crisis in the Kano and Sokoto chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) appeared to have worsened yesterday when two key leaders stayed away from separate meetings held to unify disparate groups of the party in the two states. Former Kano governor Ibrahim Shekarau and his Sokoto counterpart Attahiru Bafarawa had been sulking since the defection to APC by their long-standing political rivals, Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso and Aliyu Wamakko. The incumbent governors have been trying to take over control of the party’s state structures, which the two former governors were instrumental in setting up in the first place. In Sokoto yesterday, a unification forum of the party’s factions was held during a state secretariat commissioning, conducted by Wamakko, with key Bafarawa loyalists attending. But Bafarawa did not attend or send a representative, and no reason was given for his absence. Wamakko was assisted in opening the office by Bafarawa’s former deputy, Alhaji Chiso Datti. Others are the event were former gubernatorial candidate of the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), Alhaji Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, who challenged Wamakko in two previous elections, as well as Ambassador Abubakar Shehu Wurno, and Alhaji Lawali Labbo Margai. One of Bafarawa’s associates and former secretary of the defunct ANPP in the state, Alhaji Abubakar Kantoma, said as far as Bafarawa and his supporters were concerned the office commissioned yesterday was that of defectors and not the authentic state secretariat of APC. “We are the genuine members of APC,” he told Daily Trust. On the presence of Bafarawa’s former lieutenants at yesterday’s event, Kantoma said those people had long parted ways with the former governor. “When Bafarawa left DPP to ACN none of them followed him and even when he switched back to his former party, ANPP. So it is not surprising if they decide to join Wamakko,” he said. A spokesman for Bafarawa, Alhaji Yusuf Dingyadi, said the office commissioning amounted to an illegality as it was done without the consent of the Abubakar Sanyinna-led interim party executive. “So it was like a commissioning an office of a social club,” Dingyadi said. Speaking at the ceremony earlier, Wamakko said he was glad that the people of the state agreed to form a united front towards bringing positive changes in the state and the country. “We have united for the benefit of our state and the country,” he said. “As you can see physically, everywhere is full; everyone that matters in the state is here. So the meeting is fruitful, cordial and result oriented and whatever we have discussed is for the benefit of our dear state and country.” Also speaking, Maigari Dingyadi assured that the warring camps would at the end of the day dissolve into one formidable party. Ambassador Wurno, for his part, said they would not continue to live in isolation. “We have to join any force that can lead to the emancipation of our people and Nigerians. This is why we are here. This is why we decided to bury whatever differences we have in the past and join the crusade,” he said. Also in Kano, a unification meeting was held behind closed doors between the founding APC members and the Kwankwaso side. Among those who attended were Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, Senator Kabiru Gaya, Alhaji Barau Jibrin, Rabi’u Bako, Aminu Ibrahim Abba, Alhaji Ibrahim Kankarofi and Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil. But Shekarau did not attend, and no reason was given for his absence. A statement yesterday by Kwankwaso’s spokesman Halilu Ibrahim Dantiye said the meeting was part of the governor’s efforts of ensuring unity in the APC. “Stakeholders of the APC in Kano are making spirited efforts to reinforce unity among the different camps that formed the party, to enable it face the challenges ahead,” Dantiye said in a statement. |
