congrats nairaland. don't forget that it is no for longer for nigerians alone. it is also popular among zim people. "Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages of umuofia and beyond. his fame had grown---." thats how i came in contact with Nigeria at a tender age of form 3 english literature in Chinua Achebel's 'Things Fall Apart'. since then i was always curious of the land of writers. |

this happened to a workmate when i was working as a lecturer at a college with a capacity of 6000 day students. the senior journalism lecturer had bonked a lovepeddler and did not pay her. somehow she managed to trace him,and came for him, during the last lecture before lunch. she started embarassing him in his department, and the only way for him to avoid further insults, was to get out of there. his department was the furthest (approximately 300m) from the entrance to the college and he didn't have a car. so he had to walk that distance, inbetween 3 storey lecture blocks, with the girl closely behind him, spitting fire: 'old man, you think you get it for nothing, thats not gonna happen' all students forgot about their lectures and scrumbled for the windows to see who it was. |

After a passionate night of making love, the guy rolled over, pulled out a stick of cigarette from his jeans and searched for his lighter. Unable to find it, he then asked the girl on the bed if she had one at hand. "There might be some matches in the top drawer," girl said. He opened the drawer near table and found a box of matches sitting neatly on top of a framed picture of another man. Naturally, the guy began to worry and asked. "Is this your husband?" guy inquired nervously. "No, silly," girl replied, snuggling up to him. "Your boyfriend then?" guy said. "No, not at all," girl nibbling away at his ear. "Well, who is he then?" demanded the bewildered guy. Calmly, the girl replied, "That's me before the operation." 3 Likes |

Chinese nationals severely assault Zimbabwean police officers Two police officers were severely assaulted by Chinese nationals at a local hotel that is under construction close to the National Sport Stadium along Bulawayo road earlier this week. The police officers had gone to the construction site to investigate a case of assault that had been reported by a Zimbabwean national, Langford Sibindi, at Marimba Police Station and when they were making their investigations they were confronted by scores of Chinese nationals who began to beat them up, radiovop reported. According to the workers, one Chinese national severely beat up the Zimbabwean guy using clenched fists and martial arts resulting in the employee falling to the ground bleeding heavily. "The Chinese boss accused Langford of being lazy and he started beating him up heavily using clenched fists. We had to do nothing and he only left him after he started bleeding heavily. After the beating he left the area and that's when we assisted him," said one employee who did not want to be named. "He then went to the police station to report and only to come back with the officers who were also beaten up by the other Chinese guys who used martial arts to beat them. They had to flee heading towards Bulawayo road." When he was reached for a comment, Harare province Spokesperson, Tadius Chibanda said: "I haven't received such reports I will have to check first." Cases of Chinese brutality at workplaces have been on the increase and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara once called parliament to act over the matter. http://www.bulawayo24.com/index-id-news-sc-national-byo-21175-article-Chinese+nationals+severely+assault+Zimbabwe+police+officers.html |

bright007: there is something fishy about this story...the four inventors are in the range of 14-15 years of age and are from Nigeria....a country where even our Professors cant produce tooth-pick...which school did this gurls attend?...so many kwessions to ask about this crap of a story? one semester before i completed my studies, i had a cameroonian friend who was studying civil engineering at the university of bochum(now university of bochum-essen) in germany. he was tasked to invent a device(instrument) that could measure the force exerted on a window in a multi storey building by the weight above it. this was his final year project(degree thesis). he managed to do it within the stipulated 6 months and the intrument was a success. and guess what! the next thing was his professor was markerting the device in australia, america and europe. he had patented it. unfortunately, the rules there are such that whenever you do a project under the supervision of a professor, whatever you produce, does not belong to you. so i asked him, how he could be the first person invent such a device when he is just getting into the profession, yet there are so many big peoople with doctorates and professorship. you know what he answered me? 'People who are already in the profession think in a biased way, thats why they could not do it. it needed someone new to do it. so please, my sister, dont underestimate those girls 1 Like |

secret history Who invented the world’s very first car? Who invented the first car? If we're talking about the first modern automobile, then it's Karl Benz in 1886. But long before him, there were strange forerunners to the today's cars, including toys for emperors, steam-powered artillery carriers, and clanking, creaking British buses. http://io9.com/5816040/who-invented-the-worlds-very-first-car from this benz should be claiming something from each and every car manufacturer. my point is, noone has monopoly over technology. once you have invented something good, others will modify and improve it, and take it as their own. |
Nairaland / General / Re: Shark Attacks Woman In Delta by joerux60: 8:55pm On Oct 11, 2012 |
Bull Sharks In Rivers: Fact or Fiction? Are the stories true about bull sharks swimming up freshwater rivers? Yes, they absolutely are. Bull sharks in rivers may not be very common sightings, but it definitely does happen. Jeremy Wade, on Animal Planet's "River Monsters", goes on a journey to catch a bull shark in a river and share the truths about this animal. Learn how bull sharks are able to survive in freshwater, and why they swim into estuaries and even up rivers. How Do Bull Sharks Survive in Rivers? How does a saltwater shark survive in freshwater? Saltwater and freshwater have different specific gravity, or salinity, or however you want to refer to the chemical concentraions of the two different bodies of water; simply put, osmosis is a huge factor in an organism's ability to live in water. Osmosis can be defined as the movement of water through a membrane due to the differences in concentrations of two solutions. This is why you always hear people say it is a bad idea to drink saltwater because it will actually dehydrate you. The saltwater is at a higher concentration than the cells in our bodies, so due to the natural forces of osmosis, water will leave our "less concentrated cells" and enter the "higher concentrated saltwater" until they become equal (physical laws of science love to be at equilibrium). The result is the loss of water from our cells which is no good. OK, so how does this relate to sharks? The forces of osmosis means that animals must either be adapted to freshwater or adapted to saltwater. Saltwater fish live in the ocean, and freshwater fish live in rivers, lakes, etc. Marine fish must go against the laws of physics in order to retain water to avoid dehydration due to osmosis, while freshwater fish must go against the laws of physics to prevent the absorption of too much water. So then how the heck does a saltwater Bull Shark survive in freshwater? Bull sharks can survive in freshwater rivers due to a feature called osmoregulation. Osmoregulation is the ability of an organism to maintain a constant concentration of water in their body even when the surrounding environment would cause it to either gain or lose water. Remember how I was saying fish have to be adapted to either freshwater or saltwater due to the large differences in salinity? The ability of bull sharks to undergo osmoregulation means they can survive in both saltwater AND freshwater! Osmoregulation in Bull Sharks allows them to alter their physiological processes in order to survive in freshwater! Do you believe Bull Sharks swim up rivers? Why Do Bull Sharks Go Into Rivers? Bull sharks may breed in freshwater, and there are advantages to it. Freshwater habitats such as estuaries and rivers have features that are suitable for smaller sharks to survive. There is cover (or shelter) and there is food. http://www.squidoo.com/bull-sharks-in-rivers |

Jokes Etc / The Haircut by joerux60: 3:54pm On Sep 25, 2012 |
One day a florist went to Fred for a haircut. After the cut he asked About his bill and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from You, I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased And left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next Morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for Him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his Bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm Doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the Shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door. Then a Member of Parliament came in for a haircut, and when he went To pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from You I'm doing community service this week.' The Politician was very Happy and left the shop. The next morning, when the barber went to Open up, there were a dozen Members of Parliament lined up waiting For a free haircut. And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between The citizens of our country and the politicians who run it. REMEMBER, POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS SHOULD BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON |

hey guys, nigeria has been helping us since day 1. read this; Independence and the 1980sZimbabwe Rhodesia regained its independence as Zimbabwe on April 18, 1980. The government held independence celebrations in Rufaro stadium in Salisbury, the capital. Lord Christopher Soames, the last Governor of Southern Rhodesia, watched as Charles, Prince of Wales, gave a farewell salute and the Rhodesian Signal Corps played God Save the Queen, the anthem of Commonwealth realms. Many foreign dignitaries also attended, including Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India, President Shehu Shagari of Nigeria, President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, President Seretse Khama of Botswana, and Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser of Australia, representing the Commonwealth of Nations. Bob Marley sang 'Zimbabwe', a song he wrote, at the government's invitation in a concert at the country's independence festivities.[28][29] President Shagari pledged $15 million at the celebration to train Zimbabweans in Zimbabwe and expatriates in Nigeria. Mugabe's government used part of the money to buy newspaper companies owned by South Africans, increasing the government's control over the media. The rest went to training students in Nigerian universities, government workers in the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria in Badagry, and soldiers in the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Zimbabwe |
