Food / Clean An Old Farm Sink by Johnmarrison: 5:09am On Mar 29, 2013
Hello Friends,

If you're renovating an old farmhouse and wish to retain the retro look, a kitchen face lift is fairly straightforward. Sanding down and refinishing old cabinets is a simple project, and counter tops can be replaced. You can also clean up an abused stainless steel sink with scouring powder, detergent and elbow grease, but restoring a white cast-iron enamel sink can be a challenge. If it is scored and chipped, professional re-enameling may be the only answer. But if it has light surface scratches and a brownish, splotchy appearance, a few eco-friendly cleaning agents and the right approach is all you need.

Adverts / Restain Kitchen Cabinets by Johnmarrison: 5:07am On Mar 21, 2013
Hello Everyone,

There are different approaches to restaining your kitchen cabinets, depending on your desired results. If you want to stain your cabinets darker than they already are, you can apply a gel stain over the existing finish after some light sanding. If you want to lighten your cabinets or stay close to the shade you have now, you have to remove the old stain completely. Unscrew all the hardware on the cabinet doors and set them aside. Protect your work surface with a plastic sheet and place your cabinet doors on it. Place another plastic sheet under the cabinets.

Science/Technology / Kitchen Sink Drain Plumbing by Johnmarrison: 4:18am On Mar 19, 2013
Hi Friends,

When you install the drains plumbing for your sink you need to purchase two different PVC plastic kits. The first kit comes with the pipes and fittings needed to connect both sink basins. This includes the fittings for the basket drains and the T-fitting to connect everything together. The second kit is the trap. The trap is the S-shaped pipe that prevents sewer gas from coming up through the drain. Coat the threads on the bottom of the sink baskets with thread putty. Slide the metal nut that came with the sink basket over the straight pipe with the flared end on it. Place the white slip-joint gasket onto the flared end of the pipe and thread the nut onto the bottom of the sink basket. Do this with both basins. Turn the nut tight with a pipe wrench.

Thanks a lot!

Food / Copper Countertops Pros & Cons by Johnmarrison: 5:00am On Mar 15, 2013
Hello Everyone,

While copper countertops are not commonly seen in kitchens, they can be used as an attractive alternative to granite, stainless steel or Formica countertops. It's important to understand the pros and cons of copper countertops before buying one. During a copper countertop installation, copper sheets are usually fastened to a solid substrate with adhesive. If these copper sheets aren't mounted properly, the copper countertop can experience a higher rate of dents and dings on the surface.

Adverts / Framing Mirrors With Crown Molding by Johnmarrison: 5:02am On Mar 13, 2013
Hello Everyone,

Crown molding is one of those crazy, yet easy wood working projects that often get left out of many DIY projects because of its reputation as being difficult to install. The problem is, it's not hard at all to install and cut, plus it looks like a million bucks when it costs just a few. Best of all, it only takes a few shop tools and a little DIY skill to create your own mirror or picture frames using crown molding. Get the mirrors or pictures and measure them. You'll need to take measurements from all four or more sides, then add them all together to get a linear feet measurement for the crown molding. Pick out the crown you like and get a little wood glue and brad nails. You can also use squiggle clamps for thicker crown molding.

Adverts / Clean A White Cast Iron Sink by Johnmarrison: 7:12am On Mar 11, 2013
Hello Members,

Sinks made of white porcelain over cast iron remind one of farmhouses and are now considered "retro." They last for decades if properly taken care of; however, they can get chipped and stained with use.
To keep stains from forming, rinse the sink and wipe it down after each use. Protect the porcelain with a sink liner to keep kitchen sinks and the dishes being washed in them from chipping, but remove the liner regularly to wash underneath it. Otherwise the liner can stain the sink. If a stain appears in your white cast iron sink, or if you inherited a stained sink, you have several cleaning options.

Adverts / DIY Outdoor Kitchens by Johnmarrison: 6:37am On Mar 04, 2013
Hello Everyone,

An outdoor kitchen provides you with the opportunity to cook, eat and host warm, welcoming gatherings in your yard. With the addition of a high quality grill or wood-burning oven and a protective overhang, you can extend the season for outdoor gatherings long past the summer months. Whether you're barbecuing in the mountains or mixing margaritas by the pool, an outdoor kitchen can be designed to suit the way you entertain and accommodate family gatherings throughout the year.

Food / Waterfall Faucets For Tubs by Johnmarrison: 6:08am On Mar 01, 2013
Hello Everyone,

Baths are about relaxation, and the right bathtub fixtures can maximize the relaxation potential of bath time. Waterfall faucets help increase a bath's calming effect by converting the typical thundering rush of water to a gentle gurgle as a wide stream of water often running over a small disk, tray or shell-shaped form -falls into the tub. Waterfall faucets are available in a wide variety of designs, but the designs tend to be contemporary in style. Chrome and glass dominate, and angular lines rather than curving contours are common. Some of the most unusual designs feature a glass or ceramic disc, over the edge of which the water flows. Among more traditional waterfall designs are faucets made to resemble antique waterspouts or pumps, with a wide flow of water that tumbles from the lip of the spout.

Food / Make Fabric Drawer Pulls by Johnmarrison: 5:06am On Feb 27, 2013
Hello Everyone,

Drawer pulls are handles that attach to the front of a drawer with two screws. The screw-hole spacing for drawer pulls can vary by half an inch or more, which can make replacement pulls difficult to find. You can make fabric drawer pulls to fit any drawer and complement your decor. Choose fabric that contrasts with the dresser finish for a bold accent, or use leftover scraps from a bedding or curtain project. Fabric drawer pulls are easy to install, and you can adjust the fabric to any length necessary to accommodate the distance between the screw holes.
