The commissioner of police, Usaini Gumel, told journalists through telephone that the suspects were arrested during the second day of the celebration. “We arrested 54 suspects yesterday (Thursday) with dangerous weapons of various descriptions and today (Friday) another 61 thugs were arrested with similar assorted weapons, illicit drugs and hemp across the state. ” So far about 115 suspects were arrested with dangerous weapons and hemp across the five emirates of Kano, Rano, Gaya, Bichi and Karaye.” The commissioner said already area commanders of the metro, central and divisional police officers of the 44 LGAs had been briefed on how to sustain the ongoing fight against criminality in their areas. He said the command was committed to dealing with all miscreants and their sponsors hellbent on taking advantage of festive periods to derail the existing peaceful atmosphere in the state. He warned those planning to perpetrate such acts to desist, as adequate security measures had been put in place at the identified locations, and that stringent strategies would be employed to checkmate the situation. “We are on this course of taking concrete security measures to deal with any person or group of people that may want to take advantage of Hauwan Daushe to cause the breach of security He said that already the command had increased surveillance and patrols in some identified areas where youths tended to exploit the show to promote nefarious activities. Politics / FG Pushes For More Cases To End At The Court Of Appeal. by JournalistVic(m): 6:12pm On Apr 11 |
The Federal Government on Thursday announced that it has drafted legislation aimed at ensuring that most cases in the country are concluded at the Court of Appeal. This initiative aims to lessen the workload of the justices at the Supreme Court. In Nigeria, apart from state legislative and National Assembly election petitions which terminate at the appellate court, all other matters such as burglary, theft, and others are finalised at the Supreme Court. Addressing journalists in Abuja, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said there are draft legislations to address this and many challenges confronting the judiciary. Other issues highlighted by the AGF are the judicial appointment process, funding and budgeting for the judiciary, and reducing time spent on the determination of cases among others. Fagbemi said the adoption of the legislation would form the fulcrum of the National Summit on Justice beingorganised in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association and the National Judicial Council. The event, according to him is slated for April 24 and 25, 2024. He said, “The National Summit on Justice presents a unique opportunity to collectively tackle the pressing issues hindering the efficient, fair, and people-centered delivery of justice in our nation. “Furthermore, the summit will deliberate on draft legislations proposed to address specific identified challenges within the justice sector, relating to the judicial appointments process, administration, funding and budgeting for the judiciary, the elimination of delays and inefficiencies in justice delivery and to evolve ways to reduce the amount of time for adjudication of cases, eliminate some of the associated technicalities, and reduce the number of cases getting to the Supreme Court. “In this regard, we intend to look at a situation where many cases will terminate at the court of appeal to reduce the burden on our noble justices of the Supreme Court.” He noted that the proposed law would help in achieving a people-centered justice system. Fagbemi added, “These proposed laws are expected to serve as a catalyst for collective action and provide a guiding framework for relevant governmental institutions at both the national and sub-national levels to establish an effective, efficient, and people-centered justice system.” Fagbemi noted that at the summit, the National Policy on Justice from 2024 to 2028 would be reviewed and adopted. He said, “One of the summit’s goals is to review, validate, and adopt the revised National Policy on Justice 2024- 2028 to drive prison reforms, access to justice for the average Nigerian, as well as the review of electoral laws and procedures in handling election-related cases, among several other reforms. “This comprehensive policy document outlines a broad framework and initiatives in 17 thematic areas aimed at reforming the justice sector to enhance its effectiveness and accessibility to all Nigerians, ensuring that justice is not just a privilege for the few, but a right for all.” Fagbemi said, “Notably, the summit will feature a keynote address by Dr. Willy Mutunga, EGH, a renowned legal scholar, jurist, and former Chief Justice of Kenya, celebrated for his commitment to democratic principles and human rights, and for the transformative judicial reform that took place in Kenya under his watch.”

GOODWILL MESSAGE TO THE NIGERIAN ARMY FAMILY BY THE CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF LIEUTENANT GENERAL TA LAGBAJA NAM GSS psc(+) usawc CM FCM FCMH MSS ON THE OCCASION OF ED-EL-FITR CELEBRATION 2024 1. I congratulate the Muslim faithful for concluding the 2024 Ramadan fast successfully and felicitate the officers, soldiers, and civilian staff of the Nigerian Army and family members on the occasion of Eid-El-Fitr 2024. It is a fact that the Eid-El-Fitr is of great religious, cultural, and social significance to the Muslim faithful and all members of the Nigerian Army Community Having undertaken the CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF spiritual exercise with other Muslim faithful worldwide, I believe that your fasting, acts of charity, love, patience, and perseverance have strengthened your relationship with Almighty Allah and enhanced your humanness. 2. The overlapping of the Lenten and Ramadan seasons this year offered a good lesson to us as a nation on the need to live in harmony with one another. These spiritual exercises created a solemn atmosphere for Christians and Muslims alike to reflect and pray for our nation and leaders as we navigate the current economic and security realities that we face, and I have no doubt that you have taken advantage of the season to do just that. I equally hope that you spared a moment during the Ramadan fast to pray for the repose of the souls of our departed colleagues who paid the supreme price in the line of duty and the families they left behind. 3. Let me use this opportunity of this celebration to acknowledge and thank you for your continued contributions towards ensuring the total defeat of adversarial elements troubling our nation. Your commitment and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, banditry, oil theft, illegal mining, and other forms of criminalities challenging our existence as a Nation have not gone unnoticed by the government and the people of Nigeria. You all will bear me witness that the government of the day has, within available means, kept faith with its promise to make the welfare of members of the Armed Forces and our families of uttermost importance. The only way to reciprocate this is by redoubling our efforts at creating the right environment for peace and economic prosperity of our people and country. I challenge you not to rest on your oars as we continue to work with our sister services and other security agencies in implementing strategic policies of government through successful operational activities and effective tactical actions. I assure you that I will continue to prioritize your welfare while maintaining the sanction and reward system which characterize the sound administration pillar of my Command Philosophy, which is "To transform the Nigerian Army into a Well-trained, Equipped and Highly Motivated Force Towards Achieving our Constitutional Responsibilities within a Joint Environment". 4. For our colleagues who, due to operational commitments, are unable to join their family members and loved ones to celebrate this year's Eid-El-Fitr, be assured that the Nation appreciates your sacrifice and service and I salute your sense of duty and dedication. Securing our beloved nation against all forms of threats, internal and external, is a duty we are constitutionally bound to perform and service we must render to our fatherland. I hope you continue to imbibe the lessons of Ramadan and espouse the acts of charity, kindness, and patience, among other virtues emphasised during the fasting season.
