Ace Nigerian musician, Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, has emerged the only Nigerian rapper on the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards nominee list.

The Black Entertainment Television (BET) network introduced the ‘Best International Flow’ category to honour artists from selected countries around the globe.

BET Awards celebrate African Americans and other American minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year.

Among the African artistes nominated to compete for the newly introduced category are 28-year-old Nigerian rapper Falz; Sarkodie, Ghanaian hip hop recording artiste; and Nasty C, South African rapper and record producer.

Others are Ghetts, British hip hop artiste; Kalash, French rapper and singer; Lil Simz, English rapper and actress; and Tory Lanez, Canadian rapper and record producer.

“Best International Flow is a new category that will recognize artists from around the world for the first time, with nominees from Nigeria, UK, France, South Africa, Ghana and Canada,” BET stated.

Chocolate City Music on Friday announced that it will put out three albums in August in a bid to breathe life back into hip hop in Nigeria.

According to a statement released by the label, ‘Crown’ will be released on August 17, ‘Yung Denzel’ will come a week later while ‘Bad Boy Blaq’ will be put out at the end of the month.

Loose Kanyon, AQ, M.I. Abaga and Blaqbonez are the artistes who will be featured on the three albums.

The releases, tagged #LAMB based on the acronyms of the rappers involved, is supposedly geared towards the restoration and to “ensure the survival” of the hip hop culture in Nigeria.

Chocolate City said in a statement: “For the entire month of August 2018, hip-hop is promised to experience a re-awakening in Nigeria because for the longest time, the question “is there a future for hip-hop in Nigeria?” has resurfaced multiple times across music discuss platforms.

“For the culture of hip-hop in Nigeria, 3 hip-hop albums shall be released on the 17th, 24th & 31st of August – Crown, Yung Denzel and Bad Boy Blaq respectively.

The Acting President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo has appointed Mr Matthew Seiyefa as the Acting Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS), following the sack of the former Director-General Lawal Daura on Tuesday.

Seiyefa, who hails from Bayelsa State, was before his new appointment the most senior director in the DSS.

Mr Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Acting President, confirmed the appointment to State House correspondents.

Seiyefa was also the Director, Institute of Security Studies, Abuja.

With about 34 years of experience, Seiyefa had served in different capacities, including State Director in Osun, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos states.

Osinbajo had earlier directed Daura to hand over to the most senior director in the agency.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Seiyefa was shortly after Daura’s sack, spotted in the Presidential Villa, where he had a meeting with Osinbajo.

Although an earlier statement issued by Akande announcing Daura’s sack did not give reasons for the action, it is believed that it is connected to the blockade of the National Assembly by DSS operatives on Tuesday.

The chairman of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (r-APC), Buba Galadima, was involved in a motor accident along Hadeija-Kano road in Jigawa state on Monday.

The newspaper reported that the decision of the party for a change of name was taken on Saturday night.

The party noted that the move was pre-emptive to prevent the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from tagging it as corrupt.

PDP, which planned to announce the decision to change its name, had also pencilled down Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu as the one to head a committee that would walk the party through the procedure.

Many of the party’s stalwarts have been worried by how the ruling APC had successfully branded the party as corrupt in the eyes of Nigerians and admitted that, a rebranding was imperative to mount a successful challenge in 2019.

PDP had become damaged goods that must be changed to give the party a fresh start.

The decision by the PDP to change its name might have stemmed from last Thursday’s meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Though, details of their discussion were not made public, many in PDP believed that with such sessions, the chances of bringing Saraki back to the PDP could be hampered.

The opposition party had long mooted the idea of name change, but had slowed down on the decision because a majority of its members were not disposed to it, and those who wanted it could not convince the others.

“PDP is a tsunami that will soon wipe out APC. We are not afraid, we are strong and coming like train to crush APC,” Secondus said.

Secondus assured all presidential aspirants level playing field and tasked APC on ensuring level playing field for all parties in 2019 general elections.

Without mentioning names, Secondus announced the defection of some commissioners, House of Assembly members and council chairmen from APC to PDP.

Speaking on behalf PDP senators, Sen. Ben Murray-Bruce said Atiku has what it takes to make a difference 2019.

Chinese researchers have submitted a new leukemia drug for clinical trials, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The new drug — HYML-122 — was approved by China National Drug Administration for clinical trials in June.

The researchers, based in Anhui Province, spent four years developing the new drug, a source from the academy said.

The source added that the drug was targeted at patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), an often-lethal cancer caused by damage to the DNA of blood-forming stem cells in the bone marrow, resulting in abnormal blood cells.

Without treatment, AML patients will die in weeks or months, the source added.

The FLT3 gene is one of the most frequently mutated genes in AML.

Studies have shown that 30 per cent of AML is related to FLT3.

The U.S. approved the world’s first leukemia drug in May 2017, but it may cause side effects such as albinism, thus an urgent need for safer and more effective drug, said Liu Qingsong, the lead researcher.

Animal experiments showed HYML-122, a small-molecule inhibitor of FLT3, improved safety and tumour penetration.

Should clinical tests prove successful, it could provide a solution for patients, especially those with tumours in the late stage of the disease.

The new drug has been patent protected and may be marketed after five years of clinical tests.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the results of the Ekiti governorship election in which Kayode Fayemi, the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated Kolapo Olusola, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The APC candidate polled 197,459 votes while the PDP candidate had 178,121 votes.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday, Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the PDP, said it was clear that their candidate won based on results from the various polling centres.

“The PDP cannot be crushed. The PDP rejects in its entirety the results concocted by the APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, in the governorship election in Ekiti state and declared by INEC,” Ologbondiyan said.

“The party rejects the falsified results and declaration of APC candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to be the winner of the election, as a daylight robbery, a brazen subversion of the will of the people and a direct assault on our democracy.

“From the authentic results flowing directly from the polling centres across the state, it is clear that the PDP candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, incontrovertibly won the election, with a very comfortable margin over the APC candidate, only for INEC to allow the alteration of results at the collation centres.”

The spokesman said card readers were brought in from other states to rig the election.

“The PDP has the details of all the polling units where we won, mostly with very wide margin ahead of the APC, only for the security agencies to chase away our agents, then aid the alteration and swapping of such results with those smuggled in by the APC at the collation centres,” he said.

“We know how APC conspired with INEC to bring in card reader machines belonging to Kogi, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun states into Ekiti state to enable APC members from these states to vote in Ekiti election with ease.”

He said it is shameful that the APC would rely on “brute force” to win the Ekiti election.

“This robbery of the franchise of Ekiti people is a horrible rape of our democracy and it is most uncharitable that it could happen under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the participation of the APC, who hugely benefitted from the credible electoral process midwived by the PDP in 2015.

“Let it be known to all that, surely, this electoral banditry will not stand. The PDP is already collating all the infractions in this election and within the possible timeframe, we shall make our next step to reclaiming our stolen mandate public.”

Williams had hoped to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles by winning her first major prize since becoming a mother in September.

The 36-year-old, who last won a Grand Slam at the 2017 Australian Open, went into the final as the title favourite, even though she was playing only the fourth tournament of her post-pregnancy comeback.

But instead world number 10 Kerber sprang a huge surprise, making her Germany’s first female champion at the All England Club since Steffi Graf in 1996.

“It’s obviously disappointing but I am just getting started,” said an emotional Williams after losing in the Wimbledon final for the first time since 2008.

“For all you mums out there I was playing for you. I really tried.”

Graf helped Kerber get her game on track earlier in the her career, so it was an especially sweet moment for the 30-year-old to follow in her footsteps at Wimbledon.

Kerber had endured a significant slump last year after wining her previous major titles at the Australian and US Opens in 2016.

But, back to her best on the grass at Wimbledon, she needed only 11 winners and one ace to deny an oddly nervous Serena, who contributed to her own downfall with a whopping 24 unforced errors, compared to only five from Kerber.

In the first Wimbledon final for 41 years to feature two women 30 or older, Serena was cheered on by her friend the Duchess of Sussex, golf legend Tiger Woods and Formula One ace Lewis Hamilton.

Left needing several life-saving operations to deal with the threat of blood clots after Olympia’s birth, Williams was unable to walk for six weeks and even now is still haunted by harrowing flashbacks to that period.

Focal person for implementation of alcohol and drugs policy/programme covering all work locations including contractors.
Coordinate Shell Health Wellness program - Human Performance and Care, Expert resource on Occupational Health issues including health promotion
Performance Monitoring & Reporting Health data to Line HSE Systems and focal points with support to incident classification - Total Recordable Occupational Illness Frequency (TROIF), FACs, Health Safety and Environment Dashboard health items etc.
