Literature / Research Is An Intricate Part Of Writing If You Really Want To Good In Writing by jude4new: 11:38am On Jul 08, 2009
Historical fiction helps us to understand the past. It educates and entertains us at the same time. History books give us the facts, but historical fiction helps us to understand history in a special way. Leon Garfield said, "The historian, if honest, gives us a photograph; the storyteller gives us a painting."

Research is an important part of writing historical fiction or nonfiction. Learn everything you can about the area your story takes place, the time period, non-fictional characters, and historical facts you would like to add.

Find out everything you can about the area to both educate your readers and to make the setting feel real. While the reader can't be there physically, they can be there mentally. If possible, go to the area you want to write about, walk around, and look at the historical buildings. If you can't travel there, find pictures of that area, study books at the library or search the Internet. Description is very important in a story. Paint a picture like an artist, describing what you see and feel. Make the scenery believable by describing the crunching of pine needles beneath your feet or allow the reader to smell the pine trees in the forest.

I wanted to find out what it was like in the area my ancestors settled. After much research I found that Bear Lake Valley had a lot of intriguing history between 1896 and 1925. In my research, I found that in the western part of the United States, the market for cattle was lucrative. Cattle rustling was a terrible problem in the West. I also learned that a ten-foot grizzly bear by the name of Old Ephraim roamed the mountains of Cache Valley and Bear Lake Valley, wreaking havoc everywhere he went. I learned that the Bear Lake Monster is an old Indian legend, and part of Bear Lake history. Many accounts were written about it, testifying to its reality. I also found out that women had to fight for the rights of equality in the Eastern states. A woman was not encouraged to go to college or become anything more than a teacher or a nurse. She could not bob her hair or raise her hemlines without the threat of being fired from her job. In the Western states things were different. Women had more rights. When doing research, it makes the book come to life and it's so much fun to imagine what things must have been like as we learn more about history.

Another important part of writing is using emotion. It's the secret of holding a reader. By giving description of emotion, it helps the reader feel part of the story as if he were actually there himself. When emotion is left out of a story, we can feel let down. Emotion is part of our lives, so why ignore such an important element in a story?

It can be difficult, however, for an author to know exactly how the character feels unless he or she had been in a similar situation, and that's where research comes in. After researching stories about people who have been faced with a similar situation, the author can describe the emotions of a character much better.

If a character were approached by a grizzly bear, how would that person react? These are questions that you must research. Read about other people's accounts, so you can adequately describe your character's feelings during a situation.

Research is an important part of writing. Learn all you can about the area, any non-fictional characters, and the time period. Remember: "The storyteller gives us a painting."

Literature / Starting Your Freelance Writing Business As A Nigerians by jude4new: 9:37pm On Jun 09, 2009
I heard a friend say recently that she had read an article in the newspaper that discouraged her from trying to become a freelance writer. How sad that good writers are told they can't earn a living doing what they love. You may be thinking about becoming a full-time writer and earning your money as a freelancer. Let me share my experience with you and perhaps give you hope that you can make it.

I started my writing services business in 2003 with a dream and a lot of hope. I still remember all the times I wanted to give up and go back to a corporate job where I could consistently make good money. Perseverance paid off and today I am happy to say that I am a full-time freelance writer supervising my own team of contracted writers.

How it all began

Before I considered striking out on my own, I started writing pro-bono copy for some volunteer organizations that needed promotional materials. You may want to offer your writing to charities and non-profits that you enjoy supporting. When my kids were teenagers, I wrote stories about daily homelife events. Each week I sent stories to my friends and each week they came back with the same response: You should publish these stories as a book. Their encouragement helped me see that I had exceptional writing skills that could be put to good use in making money for myself.

My day job required a lot of writing so I was naturally keeping my skills honed. It occurred to me that I could be making some money on the side so I started taking on writing assignments through Guru.com where I had to bid for projects. At first I was like a weed in a field. There were so many writers and tons of project leads, but I had no idea what to charge; and I was not that confident that I was a great writer. I felt overwhelmed; however, I had paid my yearly fee to join so I decided to give it my best shot. Services such as Elance and Guru are good ways to get started as a freelance writer, but you will not want to stay in a low-paying mode once you improve your skills, have your own portfolio and learn to market yourself and your business. You can either raise your hourly rate and only bid on jobs that will pay you what you are worth, or you can start to find jobs elsewhere.

Market Yourself

The first thing I had to learn was how to market myself. I had little experience but I showcased the few articles I had written and started bidding really low hoping to land a project. During that year, I managed to build my writing portfolio, and I learned to market my skills and define what type of writing I was best at. It seemed that everyone had a website but me and I wasn't going to be left behind in the dust. I got a domain name from Godaddy.com and used their template to create a home page and post a few of my writing samples.

In that first year I learned by trial and error what prices to charge. I searched the Internet for other writing services and compared my prices to theirs. After my business grew to where I was not able to help all the clients needing my services, I took on a couple of experienced writers and formed a team. Together we set our prices according to market trends and stayed a little lower than the guidelines maintained by Writer's Market in order to gain a competitive edge.

If you are considering a career as a freelance writer, you may want to read sign up for my free monthly newsletter or listen to my podcast about freelance writing. These are very helpful resources accessible from the home page of my website. By the way, I did have a professional who knows what they are doing redesign the site for me last year. Now it attracts much more traffic and clients.

There are always learning curves to be considered and even with the best advice, you are going to make some mistakes along the way. Keep believing in yourself. Learn all you can about the business and don't give up. It is worth the pursuit. I wish you well in your writing career.
Business / The Entrepreneur's Mindset For Naija by jude4new: 9:34pm On Jun 09, 2009
The mentality that most of successful entrepreneurs have doesn't initially appear to be something simple, but as soon as people join this adventure of starting a business on their own they realize that it is not impossible to achieve goals. However starting a free enterprise is not suitable for every individual.

First of all, success is a state of mind. If you want success, you have to be able to start thinking of yourself as a success. Vision who you want to be, vision the life that you anticipate to have. It is all about confidence, self esteem and what you really think of yourself as a person and as a valuable factor in order to be able to really improve your life and offer your guidance and knowledge to others that need it and they know they want it, At the end everyone will get as much as he evaluates himself to qualify for.

Maybe you've heard about a quote that it is considered to be a principal for the new entrepreneurs that are at their first steps of their career, "Fake it until you make it". What I have to say is that nobody has to fake anything that he is not and he is really aware of it. When people fake it doesn't take to be some kind of genius for someone to take their masks off their faces. These persons are so obvious and distinguished such as clear the difference between black and white is. You always know which color is which. Except of course if (playfully stating) there is a medical problem such as weak sight or manic depression, In any other case keep in mind always that your true self is going to be revealed sooner or later, so be genuine and real.

After getting yourself in the business mindset and mentality by implementing your visions to reality, part two of the things that you need to do and focus on improving is: 1) perseverance to your schedule, 2) patience when difficulties appear, 3) intensity to whatever you choose to do towards the results you seek to get, and 4) tenacity, so you have long-term ongoing and repeatable positive developments in your business.

Remember: Success is kind of like wrestling a gorilla, you don't quit when you are tired, but only when the gorilla is tired. Yes it's that simple.

Nobody claimed that being an entrepreneur is an easy thing, but before a thought comes across your mind to "throw in the towel", remember what I mention above about visioning your goals and the latest four of my points. The key to be successful then, will be in your hands.
