Technology Market / Re: I Need A Fairly Used Cisco Router And Switch Pls by Kafin(m): 4:45pm On Apr 07, 2011
Used Cisco gears are available at really good prices. You pay when you pick up the device, and they come with 90days warranty.

Build your Cisco lab and pass the exam at first attempt! They could also be used as spares/backup for your Infrastructure, or you could be renting them out if you have the connection.
Autos / Re: Windscreen For Honda Odyssey 2000 And Vw Golf 1999 by Kafin(m): 4:27pm On Apr 07, 2011
@ Garba

Thanks for your time buddy, it is refreshing to get a response, I was scared that no one will respond.

I initially bought the windscreens for use, but ended up not using them. I am faced with the option of returning them and loosing 15% of the price in the name of re-stocking fees, or sell them to recover my money (and possibly make some profit).

Since these are popular rides in Nigeria, I considered the option of sending them down, and wanted to know how much they can attract (to know if it is worth the effort).

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your efforts.

Car Talk / Re: Siena: What's D Effect Of Parking A Car For Six Months? by Kafin(m): 4:40pm On Apr 06, 2011
I dont think there will be any adverse effect if you park the car for six months and just as fstranger3 suggested, you can bring it to me for safe-keeping; I promise not to add more that 60Km to the car.

On a serious note, you should not remove the battery, else you will have to start re-programing the car when you come back. The drain on the battery should not be that much over six month unless the battery is weak to start with.

I dont think you should remove the tyres also, for goodness sake cars stay on the dealers-lot for months before being sold. A tyre that will not deflate while in use should not deflate while it is parked!

It will be good if the car can be covered, but for sure the car will be exposed to more elements of the weather while being used that when it is parked.

I will advice that you do an oil change about a week before parking the car. This will ensure that fresh oil will be available when next you start the car. Honestly, dont warm the car as is popular practice, the highest wear and tear on an engine occurs in the first 30 seconds after starting the car, and the best result you can get is to keep your battery fully charged, while consuming your fuel.

But seriously consider keeping the car with me grin cheesy

Oga Siena, make I try steal this job from you!

Which type of VW do you have and what is the type of engine that you are looking for.

It will help if you can post the picture of the engine so that I can be sure of the one you are referring to.
Car Talk / Re: Help: My Car Dashboard Vibrates Whenever My A/c Is On. by Kafin(m): 4:06pm On Apr 06, 2011
Is it the dashboard that is vibrating or the tachometer?? (engine speed reading)

From your description, your engine cannot stand much load. It has been misadjusted and will need to be tuned properly. I will also suspect the engine mounts, because I can not imagine what will make the "dashboard" to be vibrating! Unless the bolts holding it down are loose.

I have the windscreen for Honda Odyssey 2000 and VW Golf 1999.

Can anyone be kind enough to let me know how much these can fetch in Nigeria. I am asking so that I can know if it is worth sending them home.

I am also curious to know where one can buy windscreens to replace broken ones in Nigeria.

Thanks for your help!

Business / Re: Any Basis For Bank Debt Cancellation For Young Entrepreneurs? by Kafin(m): 6:36pm On Jul 31, 2010
Technically, the bank owns the collateral until all debts are settled. Even if filling bankruptcy is possible, the collateral can’t be protected.

The whole idea of taking a collateral before giving loans is to allow the lender to have something to hold onto incase the borrower cant repay, it is just unfortunate that the old-man did not factor this into his thinking before giving out his property.

If you can connect with the banks executives on a personal level; they have done more for their friends and family.

The guys should comeup with another plan, but this time they should start small, and work extra-hard (if only for the sake of the old-man). They may need a lawyer to negotiate with the bank, else the interest will be increasing and their collateral will not appreciate.
Business / Re: Transport And Haulage Business by Kafin(m): 5:55pm On Jul 31, 2010
I am not in this business (at least not yet), and my comment is based on the analysis by Sament, and the response from Delampy.

Four trips per month is OK if the trucks are well maintained (one item that is missing from Sament's projections!).
He is offering the driver/motorboy a salary of base (25k/15k) plus commission (9x4/4x4) 61,000/31,000 per month. This looks low for the kind of work being done, but since you said you have worked for a conglomerate, I will assume that this is the going rate. There is nothing wrong in topping it up a little a suggested by Delampy.

Not sure what an agent will need to do to source the business, but I think you should allocate 100k/month/truck for PR. (Remember the Police are also our friends). However this amount cannot be added to the amount collected for the job (290k + 10K = 300K) as you have done because it is not an income to you/KELS LINGER ENT.

I dont know the distance from Lagos to Kano nor how many liters of diesel one can get for 90/58K so I cant comment on the operations for now, but one thing for sure is that if you properly service your truck, it will have a higher availability to be used for haulage, and wont consume diesel unnecessarily.

If you will be moving 30MT, please get a truck that can handle 35 – 40MT.

Does it cost ONLY 290K to move 30MT through all that distance? and are there 30MTx8 (x5 expecting at least other five companies to be doing the same) of steel/goods/month to be hauled around in Nigeria? Please forgive my ignorance (if I turn out to be wrong), I am only looking at the fact that you have a flat bed, the net weight of the goods and the fact that certain goods are automatically excluded from your list.

Business / Snail Farmers; Are You Selling? by Kafin(m): 9:52pm On Jun 24, 2010
I am looking to buy about 150 to 200 snails. This is not for farming, so the older and bigger the better (you get rid of your old snails, and I get more consumable stuff).

Let me know how much you are selling and the size that you have available. I am looking for sellers in Lagos, Ikeja area. You can email me at kafinkata@yahoo.com

Thanks.

Autos / Re: Squeaky Fan Belt by Kafin(m): 2:55pm On May 23, 2010
OP is most likely not having issues with misalignment else he will be talking about belt flying off. That just came up while talking about crankshaft pulley. Like you said earlier, we all have our opinions. I just don’t like changing parts unless I have to.

You mentioned some issues that entrepreneurs who ventured into standard autoservice centers are experiencing in Nigeria. I will love to discuss this further, please email me at kafinkata@yahoo.com

***Saw your new post, and added the following.***

I am still reading over what you said about autocenter operations. Only three lines, but got so much information!!

Selling the tech manuals for 10K ($66) is definitely a good idea. I am sure that you will buy, but YOU are not the typical Nigerian driver. Business comes from volumes. I think we really need to talk. I opened a thread for auto service partner some days ago, but no response yet. Even if you are not available/interested, you can be a business advisor.
Autos / Re: What Is Wrong With Mitsus? by Kafin(m): 2:28pm On May 23, 2010
moonraker:

well for one, mitsubushis were designed for specific markets?? its headquaters comes to mind (Japan),

You cannot compare a honda or toyota to a Mitsubushi cos the M guys aree just copycats that reproduce

what the big boys have created already,

Only the economical aspect of cars are modified to suit different markets. I have read a number of posts on this already, with Kia being the clear winner (they use a smaller engines and fewer accessories in their car coming to Africa). If this is at the request of the dealers or Kia itself is another question, but it makes a perfect economic/environmental balance.

Other than just paying for names, if you look at the features and accessories that comes standard from different manufactures, you may not want to buy Honda/Toyota.
Autos / Re: Squeaky Fan Belt by Kafin(m): 2:06pm On May 23, 2010
I won’t start looking for solutions based on a "customer's observation" of "squeaky noise after start-up" because there are so many things that can result in this. The belt, the tensioner (which I believe is what Onwan is calling “Cam Pulley"wink, the bearings (in the alternator, water pump, AC compressor or other accessories that the belt may be driving), even something totally different. The crankshaft pulley normally doesn’t have any rubber on it (not sure if the one used in 1999 Camry has some), so might not be what Onwan was referring to. Moreover it is a lot stronger than other accessories that the belt may be driving. Issues with its bearing will cause a misalignment that will be throwing off the belt.

With so many recommendations to change stuff, I will like to ask what happened to simple diagnostics? If OP can't/won’t be able to follow the instructions, then he should not be asking. A problem that I have noticed with questions on Nairaland Auto is that the OP will not come back to give a feedback. Anyway, I have some time so check the following:

If you can fabricate a stethoscope, simply touching all the components will confirm where the noise is coming from. (If you must ask, then I will say dont bother)

You already said that the fan belt looks OK, so I will assume you know what you are talking about, you may also need to compare the length of a new belt with the one you have. Second to this is the tensioner, which can also loose abilities and become slack. A belt tension test will conform the state of the tensioner, but I won’t spend anytime on this (not even the simple ruler deflection test), let your mechanic do it. Based on the result you get, you may follow up with a check of the alternator/water-pump, AC compressor bearings. Having said all these, I don’t believe that the problem will be here, because the net effect of a problem here will be a loose belt, and this will result in a constant (or at best intermittent) squeaky sound, not one that goes away after a few minutes.

My suspicion lies with the condition of your engine coolant. If it is rusted/not-clean, quickly go and do a flush (else you are some months away from a water-pump failure). Also check the water-pump to verify that it has not been damaged (depending on how long you have been having the squeaky sound). While on this, you may want to use a coolant tester to verify that your coolant is still strong (even if it is not rusted).

I personally don’t change parts unless I have a reason. While changing parts, one might touch the faulty component, and it appears that the issue is resolved, only to resurface after some weeks.

@ Onwan, You have answered so many questions that it is time you consider opening your shop. If you don’t open one by December, we will have to open one for you grin cheesy.
There are autocenters will very good equipment on ground and they try to get folks from Coscharis, Briscoe, etc to train their employees BUT after a while it all still comes down to them outrsourcing repairs to the "road side" guys. Cost of repairs is very important to the customers - even overseas, its an issue.

I have been trying in my little ways to get information about the current state of “standard auto service centers” in Nigeria, but haven’t gotten any reliable information. If you don’t mind, I will like to get intouch with you for some discussions along this line. My email address is kafinkata@yahoo.com

Business / Re: Information On Farm Business Needed by Kafin(m): 1:17pm On May 23, 2010
Ensure you understand the processing/distribution of the product you intend to farm.

All products are OK if you can get them to the customer for a profit. Even products with low production cost might not be economical if you cant get them to the customer.

Spend some time working for someone (or invest in the distribution) of the product that you like best. The lessons you learn from this will be the best guide.

@Insight04, Thanks for your time, I really appreciate your views. Major part of the orientation program for a new driver will be to help monitor the existing drivers via GPS, and explain what he thinks the driver is doing grin. This will let him know that he is being monitored.
Business / Re: Passenger Transportation Business ? by Kafin(m): 4:28pm On May 20, 2010
^^^^ Two diverse views from Harakiri and Insight04.

@Harakiri, If the drivers will make =N=5000, before delivering =N=1000, and bank financing can make it work (as you said), then the issue is not with the business but the business manager.

@ Insight04, I am looking at this business and will like to have an idea of the "clauses" that you have inserted into your contract with the drivers, and some ideas of the "early signs of driver misconduct.
