Godswill Akpabio, president of the Senate, and Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the House of Representatives, have been sued for "the unlawful plan to spend N40 billion on 465 exotic and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials, and N70 billion as 'palliatives' for new members."

The lawsuit was filed on Friday, August 11, 2023, in the Federal High Court in Lagos by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

The lawsuit was filed shortly after Mr. Akpabio claimed that the Clerk of the National Assembly had transferred "holiday allowances" into "different bank accounts of senators." Nigeria's 137 million people live in abject poverty.
SERAP is requesting "an order of mandamus to direct and compel Mr. Akpabio and Mr. Akpabio to: review and mitigate the N 40b price for 465 bulletproof cars

SERAP is seeking: “an order restraining Mr Akpabio and Mr Abbas from demanding or receiving the N40 billion to buy 465 SUVs and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials until an assessment of the socio-economic impact of the spending on the 137 million poor Nigerians is carried out in the public interest.”

Religion / Who Are The Church Goers? by Kendo7: 11:23am On Aug 13, 2023
The term applies to the individuals who often go to church mainly for attendance sake but ignore the standards set aside by Christ for Christians.

The church goers are also referred to as "The Hypocrites" just like the biblical Sanhedrins and pharisees, who professed to know God but rejected the gospel and its power of redemption.

Having a closer look at these individuals, they tend to do more in church like, joining the choir stand, participating in the sanitary department as sanctuary cleaners, availing themselves in the workers team and engaging in the activities of the church without any show of despair.

At most times, these individuals are given the dispensation of duty to preach, and even when they do very well, the audience would be thrilled but receive the message from a shallow ground, as the preacher only gives out information that he or she doesn't portray.

The church goers sparingly have a relationship with God, due to the fact that they only pray when in church meetings compared to their home-made prayers which is very rare.

even when they do, their prayers are always very loud as a show off that they know God better.

Analyzing their daily life in the domestic setting, they are apparently rude to their subjects at home and in the office, e.g husband, wife, children and even those serving under them.

Not minding the ethics of Christianity, they always put themselves first before others, keeping in touch with the word(bible) and breaking no sweat about it.

Lastly but not the least, the church goers are always lacking in charity, hoping to receive from others but hesitate to give out freely to those around them who are in need.

Are you also a church goer or do you know anyone like this?, please let's here your opinion in the comment section.

Foreign Affairs / Breaking: Niger Military Junta Threatens President After Forming New Government by Kendo7: 9:48pm On Aug 10, 2023
According to The Associated Press, Niger's junta threatened a top US diplomat that if surrounding countries tried military action to restore deposed President Mohamed Bazoum's power, they would kill him.

During her visit to the country this week, representatives of the junta informed US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland of the danger against Bazoum, a Western military official said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

An official in the United States verified that account, saying on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Bazoum, who was deposed on July 26, claims to be held hostage at his home.

The regional ECOWAS alliance announced on Thursday. It has put in place military intervention to restore democracy but has not disclosed actual location and time of strategy.
West African Union heads of state met Thursday in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

When asked for clarification, the president of the ECOWAS commission, Omar Alieu Touray, said he could only reaffirm the decisions of "the military authorities in the subregion to deploy a standby force of the community."

Financing had been discussed, and "appropriate measures have been taken," he said.

He blamed the junta for any hardship caused by the sanctions imposed on Niger and stated that any future actions by the bloc would be taken jointly, rather than by any single country.

Military Junta of Niger Republic forms new government

Certainly, it was been disclosed on thursday in a decree aired out on national television.

Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine the Prime Minister would be leading the 21-member government, with the newly formed generals heading the defence and interior ministries.

It precedes the crucial meeting to be held in Abuja on Thursday by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS by Heads of State and Government.

The expectation of the meeting is the next line of action for the recent overthrow of government in Niger Republic.

According to reliable sources, the expelled Emir of Kano met with President Tinubu to brief him on his meeting with the military coup leaders in Niger.

"I came to brief him on the details of my meetings with Niger's leaders."

"We will continue to do everything we can to bring the two parties together in order to improve understanding." This is the time for public diplomacy; it is not something that should be left to governments; all Nigerians, all Nigeriens must be involved in order to find a solution that works for Africa, a solution that works for Niger, a solution that works for Nigeria, and a solution that works for humanity," he told the press.

Politics / Niger Military Junta Making Appointments And Rejecting Negotiation Talks by Kendo7: 10:38am On Aug 09, 2023
As Niger's military junta enters its second week in power, its leaders are appointing a government and rejecting calls for negotiations in what analysts describe as an attempt to entrench their power and demonstrate that they are serious about governing the West African country in the face of an escalating regional crisis.

The junta has appointed a new prime minister and a raft of new cabinet members. They also refused to accept meditation teams from the United Nations, the African Union, and the West African regional bloc ECOWAS, citing "evident reasons of security in this atmosphere of menace," according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.

If the junta is not reinstated, ECOWAS has threatened to employ military intervention.

The junta announced on Monday that civilian economist Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine would be prime minister. Zeine is a former economy and finance minister who left office after his government was deposed in a prior military coup in 2010, and then worked at the African Development Bank.

Most analysts and diplomats, however, believe that rationale is invalid and that the takeover was the consequence of a power struggle between the president and the chief of his presidential guard, Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, who now claims to be in charge of the country.

The coup comes as a shock to many Western governments, who considered Niger as one of the few democratic allies in the region with whom they could collaborate to combat the terrorist threat. Niger partners have treatened cutting them off million of dollars if they do not return to constitutionalism.

However, diplomatic attempts have so far yielded little as the junta tightens its hold on power.

Niamey, Niger's capital, appeared more tense on Tuesday, with security officers scrutinizing vehicles. The junta closed its airspace on Monday and temporarily banned authorization for diplomatic flights from friendly and partner countries on Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Acting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland met with the coup leaders earlier this week, but they refused to let her speak with Bazoum, who has been incarcerated since the coup. She described the mutinous officers as unresponsive to her pleas to begin dialogue and restore constitutional order.

The United States has approximately 1,100 military personnel in the country and regards Niger as a strategic and economic partner.

Nu land made greater progress than the other delegates. An earlier ECOWAS group was barred from leaving the airport.

It is unclear what coordination exists between the various mediation efforts. Some analysts are concerned that if efforts are not coordinated, ECOWAS would be undermined.

"I think the US would come to a modus vivendi with this junta, if the junta proved particularly amenable to US interests, but that doesn't seem to be on the table right now," said Alexander Thurston, assistant professor of political science at the University of Cincinnati.

Following its refusal to visit Niger on Tuesday, ECOWAS said it is working to find a peaceful solution to the conflict and will continue to "deploy all necessary measures to ensure this." And the ECOWAS is meeting again on Thursday in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city.
However, many believe that the longer it takes to find a solution, the more time the junta will have to dig in and the less impetus there would be to depose them. Regional countries are divided on how to proceed as well.

Military governments in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso have backed with the junta, warning that interference in Niger would be "equivalent to a declaration of war" against them. In a joint letter to the United Nations on Tuesday, the two countries urged the agency to "prevent, by all means at its disposal, armed action against a sovereign state."

This week, Mali and Burkina Faso sent delegations to Niamey to explore military possibilities. Officials from both parties testified the talk went well.

While the situation continues, Niger's 25 million people endure the brunt of it. It is one of the world's poorest countries. Many Nigerians live hand to mouth and say they are too preoccupied with feeding their families to pay attention to the rising issue.

He warned that "If things continue as they are, the situation will become very difficult.

At a roadblock in Yola, the state capital, a female soldier enforcing the curfew set by the Adamawa government assassinated a senior comrade.

The curfew was ordered by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri when hoodlums broke into a government warehouse and looted many things, including palliatives intended to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidies.

Foreign Affairs / Niger Republic Waits For Response After Disobeying Order by Kendo7: 3:32pm On Aug 07, 2023
Niger Republic waits for response or accompanied action from disobeying order

After the deadline passed on Sunday, no foreign soldiers were observable in the city of Niamey, but the ECOWAS regional bloc has not yet made a statement in response to the coup leaders' defiance.

An quick military operation to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum is not planned at this time, according to a source close to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

But the source also said that as countries like Italy and Germany advocated in favour of a diplomatic solution in the troubled west African nation, a summit of its member countries' leaders may be held in the upcoming days to deliberate on next moves.

In order to express "solidarity (with) the people of Niger," neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso, both of which have been expelled from the West African ECOWAS bloc due to their own military takeovers, are sending a joint formal mission to Niamey.
They have said that using military force would be the same as declaring war.

According to the flight tracking website Flightradar24, Niger's military authorities have blocked the country's airspace, and on Monday, the skies were devoid of aircraft.
Germany and Italy have pushed ECOWAS to extend the deadline and seek a diplomatic resolution.

"We support ECOWAS in its ongoing mediation efforts," a spokesman for the foreign ministry said during a press conference.

The long land border between Niger and Algeria has also issued warnings that would turn a direct threat to Algeria.

Senators from Nigeria, whose president is presently the head of ECOWAS, urged everyone to concentrate on the "political and diplomatic option".

The Sahel nation's military leaders closed Niger's airspace just before the deadline on Sunday came to an end and threatened anyone trying to enter with a "energetic and immediate response."

Without naming them, they said that two Central African nations had undertaken a "pre-deployment in preparation for intervention," and they issued a warning that any state participating would be viewed as a co-belligerent.

France, a former colonial power with which the current government of Niger has severed military links, declared that it would "firmly" support any steps ECOWAS decided after the deadline had passed.
