Business / COVID-19 Increases The Adoption Of Online Payment by kidap: 2:50pm On May 16, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all the markets and industry sectors along with daily life globally, especially in Nigeria, the economic and human impact of this virus is significant.

Social distancing has become a new measure in today’s tragic situation. However, in this digital world, the flow of money cannot stop by the coronavirus outbreak or lockdowns. As a result, the adoption of the digital payment solution is increasing at a rapid pace.

Before the coronavirus pandemic in December 2019, digital payments were on the rise thanks to the growing number of smartphones. The total transactions through digital payments are said to reach US$4,769,370m in the year 2020, As per Statista estimation.

It is fair to mention that spread of COVID-19 has acted as a catalyst in the growth of digital payment platforms. Let’s understand how COVID-19 has accelerated the adoption of digital payment solutions worldwide.

In a way to curb the spread of coronavirus worldwide people are to stay at home, the lockdown has made companies implement the Work-from-Home concept or to shut down the operations.

What Leads to Increase Adoption Rate Of Online Payment.

As per the study, cash or currency notes can act as a potential career of the virus. It has forced people to switch to digital payment options.

Furthermore, many bank branches are on lockdown or work with minimum staff.

Therefore, retailers and other vendors find it hard to deposit cash into their bank accounts. They tend to switch to digital payment options to eliminate the risk of theft.

Digital transactions are free from any contact or physical interaction. They also provide a more secure way to pay and receive money. These are key reasons why people prefer digital payment solutions to currency notes and coins.

During the lockdown period, the value per transaction is increasing because many people tend to buy necessary goods together.

Politics / Rodnab: Fulfilling Local Content Mandate In Construction Industry by kidap: 7:31pm On May 12, 2020
by Jackson Ugbechie

The scant attention being accorded local curative claims for the coronavirus (Covid-19) by Nigerian authorities is symptomatic of the nation’s unwillingness to build local content across sectors. The same applies to the construction industry where a few indigenous firms like Rodnab Construction have weathered the storm and bucked the trend.

They simply refused to dwell in the shadow of foreign construction giants by proving that Nigeria’s redemption is squarely in the hands of Nigerians. Since the enactment of the Nigerian Oil And Gas Industry Content Development Act (2010), a clear picture has emerged of how a deliberate policy that promotes local content would not only help build our local capacity but also create more jobs and create more wealth for Nigerians.

Today, Nigeria’s oil and gas sector which still remains the mainstay of the economy is no longer the exclusive preserve of oil majors and multinationals. Buoyed by the success of the local content Act in oil and gas, Nigerian engineers in the building ecosystem, architects and quantity surveyors have continued to call for the enactment of a local content Act in the construction sector.

Instructively, the Nigerian construction industry gulps over 80 percent of the capital budget of all tiers of government yet it has been dominated by foreign companies since independence. The implication is that Nigeria loses so much in capital flight and through non-availability of jobs for local professionals and ancillary workers in the industry. Much more, it breeds low skills acquisition among Nigerians while questioning our sovereignty as a nation especially when sensitive construction projects like building of government houses, secretariats, official residences of top public office holders are entrusted in the hand of expatriate companies. This, obviously, has grave security implications.

It’s in this context that the efforts of indigenous construction companies ought to be appreciated. Instead some of them have become victims of muckraking and mindless mudslinging. Rodnab, for instance, has of recent come under incessant media attacks. First was the claim that it was paid humungous amount of money for contracts it did not execute at the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC. This simply mocks logic because no such malfeasance would have been possible at this time when President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered a forensic audit of the interventionist commission.

And when this blatant falsehood could not fly, the idle tribe of traducers spun another yarn, an even more illogical fib. They claimed that Rodnab is owned by the Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio. Such pathetically puerile fabrication from the infantile mind of a mischievous mob. If you wonder the link between Rodnab and Akpabio, here it is. Rodnab is one of the indigenous construction companies helping to fulfil the mandate of the NDDC in infrastructure development of the Niger Delta region. And NDDC is under the supervision of Akpabio. But the company’s relationship with NDDC predates Akpabio’s appointment as minister of Niger Delta region. It’s one of the indigenous construction companies competing effectively with expatriate companies in the contract register of the federal government through the Ministry of Works. And it has successfully undertaken several big projects to the admiration of Nigerian engineers and building professionals. It’s therefore unfair to attempt to stick the badge of corruption on Rodnab. There is no basis for such misadventure in de-marketing of a local brand that has continued to stand up to foreign firms in its field of operation.

Promoted by Edo State-born Abu Meepatan, Rodnab has answered the question: Can any good thing come out of Nigeria? It has upended the status quo and deflated the stereotype balloon that kept advertising Nigeria as a nation that does not appreciate her own. It has raised a new flag of hope for Nigeria, hope of a better tomorrow. Hope of a future assured in construction and hope of the existence of local skills in the complex construction industry.

An indigenous corporate citizen with a pedigree of philanthropy, excellence in service delivery and sound technical competence does not deserve the mud-spattering it got recently from a section of the media. It’s an unkind cut on a good corporate citizen and a total lack of appreciation of the gumption and guts it displayed to compete with established multinationals in the nation’s technically-demanding and capital-intensive construction industry.

Meepatan himself is not an emergency contractor. He has a history. He owns the biggest quarry in Auchi, Edo State and he has been instrumental in the training of hundreds of Nigerians in building technology. He and his enterprise should be spared the wrath of hirelings.

Some theorists attribute the vicious attack on Rodnab to the ongoing forensic audit at NDDC. Such theorists say that Rodnab is a victim of its own success. They claim that the attack on Rodnab and its false association with Akpabio was meant to distract the minister from actualizing the forensic audit for which he has made unflinching commitment to execute in accordance with the desire and charge of President Buhari. This might well be true given the desperation in some quarters for the disbandment of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the NDDC. This is unfortunate and brings to the fore our sore predilection to hate our own.

At a time President Buhari is promoting Buy-Nigeria policy and encouraging the building of local competences and capacities in all sectors of the economy, the effort of Rodnab deserves commendation. To do otherwise is a show of ingratitude to a patriot and a clear disservice to patriotism.

Recall that the federal government in 2013 took a bold step in the promotion of local content in the construction sector when Mike Onolememen, the then minister of works, announced that all engineering and construction projects below N5 billion would be handled by Nigerian contractors who possess the requisite capacity and competences. The intendment of this policy was to begin a gradual but steady reversal of the domination of Nigerian engineering and construction industry by expatriates. At that time, a Presidential declaration was made to give jobs to local manufacturers and contractors even if their quotations were 10 to 15 per cent higher than those of the foreign companies.

This is a sure way to achieve backward integration and self-sustainability in the construction industry. Rodnab is leading the charge in a manner that deserves national laudation, not baseless niggling

Nigerian entertainers, actress, Nkechi Blessing Sunday and music artiste, Dotman are definitely not in good terms following an encounter they had in their DMs recently.

Nkechi Blessing slid into his DMs just to give him an advice on how he should practice humility — an advice the musician didn’t take well and made their conversation go sour.

They eventually ended up blasting each other and taking to their stories to insult each other with the actress dubbing the musician a “person” and the musician dubbing the actress, “Ogbomoso Angelina Jolie”.

They also blocked themselves on social media too.

Politics / Covid-19: Rivers State Government Demolishes Two Hotels For Flouting Order by kidap: 5:08pm On May 10, 2020
Wotzupng report that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Sunday monitored the demolition of Prudent Hotel, Alode, Eleme, in line with Rivers State Government Executive Order 6, which banned the operation of hotels across the 23 Local Government Areas of the State.

The Rivers State Government also demolished
Etemeteh Hotel, Onne on Sunday. Both hotels flouted Rivers State Government Executive Order 6.

Governor Wike told journalists that the law must be obeyed, hence the State Government's decision to enforce it.

He said: "Government has no alternative but to apply the Executive order which I signed before the lockdown of Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt. I called all the Traditional Rulers and Council Chairmen and told them to ensure that no hotel operates in the State.

"We are not saying it will be forever. This is for now, so that we know where we are. To reduce the cases and check the spread.

"Whether you are PDP or not, all we are saying is that nobody is above the law. If we can do this to a PDP person, then you know we are not discriminatory. Everyone must obey. Whether you are in PDP , SDP or no party, you must obey the law. If any other person does the same thing, the same rule will apply. "

Governor Wike reiterated his declaration that no hotel should operate anywhere in the state.

"We said no hotel should operate within this period. Unfortunately, the PDP Youth Leader in Eleme joined others to flout the Executive Order. Therefore, the executive order will be applied.

"We said if any hotel operates, Government will bring down that hotel. We are doing what we have told people that we are going to do.

"Nobody wants to obey any rules. We are saying just for now, keep off, let us see how we can keep our people safe", he said.

The Governor said that the focus on hotels is due to the fact that one of the cases in the state spread the virus from a hotel.

He said: "Look at the rate of infections, most of these people are found in hotels. Look at the man that died, he was at Mingi Hotel in Rumumasi. Due to that contact, we have had other seven cases.

"People should help us and suthe pport Government for Rivers people to be safe. Security Council will meet to review the strategies and achievements or setbacks, moving forward.

"All we are doing is to protect our people. Some people may not like our strategies, but our objective is to achieve results. "

He assured that the State Government will always continue to protect the people. He said the fight against the spread of coronavirus is serious, that is why he is leading it personally.

"People talk about hunger. But it is only a living person that can discuss hunger. We will continue to work to protect our people.

"What we are doing is to tell the people that the State Government is serious. This being led by me, people should know that the State Government is determined to ensure that we defeat coronavirus," he said.

He said those involved in the crime will be prosecuted. He said that the Managing Director of the hotel at Onne has been arrested.

Politics / Amb. Simeon Uwa Solidarizes With Africa On The Outbrake Of Coronavirus by kidap: 1:02pm On May 10, 2020
Fellow Africans,

Before us is a global pandemic that has ravaged all the fabric of humanity. The facts before us reveal that the effect of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) has threatened the entire Human existence in different countries of the world causing casualties, fear and anxiety.

The Covid-19 is a pandemic that touches everyone of us. Therefore, we must all act with prudence and great responsibility to overcome it.

It could be recalled that the leadership of the International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP) ~Africa, led other African Leaders (Serving and Former), Diplomats, key Industry stakeholders and other Regional organizations to the 2020 World Summit In Seoul, South Korea within the first quarter of the year, where directional resolutions, communique and road-maps for Africa’s short/long term development were reached.
After the successful World Summit, African leaders returned, equipped with renewed vigor and enthusiasm to engage other stakeholders back home towards manifesting the blueprint reached at the Summit, only to be greeted by the news of the global pandemic.

Be that as it is, this is not time to despair, fear or be enveloped in anguish. It is a new opportunity to collectively summon courage, faith and take responsibility in combating this scourge. Let the memories of the previous global pandemic such as HIV-Aids, Bird Flue, Ebola Virus, which we fought and defeated renew our faith that this COVID-19 shall be conquered.

Be assured that afterwards, a Regional Summit for Economic Impact Assessment, In partnership with our African Leaders, Countries and Agencies in partial fulfillment of our founding ideology which is aimed at building a peaceful and prosperous Africa centered on universal values, shall be organized.

Equally, be guaranteed that all the concord reached at the World Summit in Seoul for Africa’s development are sacrosanct and in due time will be put to work for a better Africa. Let us respect the directives of the World Health Organization, and other health authorities of our different countries, in order to mitigate the spread of this virus. We need you to stay safe, healthy and significant for the new Africa we are working for. Even as we pledge to update you as we progress.

Meanwhile, ISCP~Africa is proud of and remains appreciative of African Leaders for their strategies and proactive efforts in fighting the scourge. We pray for quick recuperation of those infected across the Continent, while registering our condolences to the families of the casualties.
We appreciate all the well placed Africans, Corporate bodies and other donor agencies (within and outside the Region), Media workers, Volunteers and very importantly our Health professionals who have put in their professionalism towards winning the fight against the Covid -19 pandemic.

Yours in Regional development,

Politics / Ogun Extends Lockdown By One Week by kidap: 10:58pm On May 08, 2020
Ogun State government has extended the lockdown order in the state by another one week due to increase in the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state.

Governor @dabiodunMFR , while addressing newsmen on the activities of his administration in curbing further spread of COVID-19 pandemic, said the lockdown would be subject to review on any development as regards the virus.

He also said that the order on interstate travel still remained the and enjoined the people to comply with the curfew order of the federal government.

The governor appealed to the people not to force his government to make though decisions as regards obeying constituted authority.

He said: “We appreciate the need to balance public health and safety against economic activity.

Nonetheless, whilst we intensify sensitization and moral-suasion, our security agencies in Ogun State have been duly briefed and empowered to do the needful to assist the heroic efforts of health and other frontline workers to flatten the curve.

“You, the entire people of Ogun State, have not elected me to make easy decisions. And tough decisions we have to make. Now, to preserve the lives of our people, we are persuaded to extend the current modified lockdown, which has been slightly eased, for another one weeks alongside the current guidelines. This will be reviewed, as usual, on a weekly basis.

“We should always remember that we are the closest in proximity to Lagos, the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. It is not a matter to be taken lightly.

As the number of positive cases in Lagos increases, we, in Ogun State, must be concerned about possible spill over, particularly as our people continue to travel across state lines, despite warnings and the ban on interstate travels.”
