Phones / Realme 8 Pro Unveiled With 108 MP Main Camera, 50W Dart Charging, Realme 8 Tags by kimmjacobs: 9:09pm On Mar 31, 2021
Realme puts the number 7 in its rear view mirror and introduces the realme 8 and 8 Pro. However, just because something is behind you, it doesn’t mean it’s gone. In fact, looking at the specs the 7-series may haunt the 8-series as the two have a lot of similarities.

The new phones are not without their upgrades, of course. But before we dive in, we should note that there seems to be a geographic division between the two new models.

The realme 8 Pro is coming to Europe next week and it will be available in India as well. The vanilla realme 8 is headed to India, but we haven’t heard anything about a European launch at this point.

Realme 8 Pro

It will be difficult for the Realme 8 Pro to escape comparisons with its predecessor. The obvious upgrade is the main camera with its 108MP sensor. However, a few things are the same and there are even some regressions, so the 8 Pro is not a clear-cut upgrade over the 7 Pro. Even the realme 6 Pro is not easy to dismiss.

All three models are powered by the Snapdragon 720G. It’s a chipset that realme knows and loves. And it has spent a lot of time optimizing Realme UI to run on that particular chip. Along with the C25 announced on Monday, the 8 and 8 Pro are the first to come with version 2.0 of the UI out of the box outside of China.

Memory options are the same, you can pick between 6GB and 8GB of RAM, storage is always 128GB – but if you need more, the dedicated spot for a microSD on the triple card tray makes expansion easy. This is a dual SIM phone with 4G connectivity, by the way, if you want 5G you should look at the X-series (or the Narzo phones).

There is exactly one reason to buy the realme 8 Pro – the 108MP Samsung HM2 sensor. It has 0.7 µm pixels and supports 9-in-1 binning (final image resolution then is 12MP). It’s a large sensor too, 1/1.52”, with an f/1.9 aperture, so it serves as a solid base for great low-light imaging.
The sensor also natively supports zoom up to 3x. Since only 12MP of the full sensor is used, the phone has enough processing power to snap eight frames and merge them into one final image. According to realme, the end result is better than a photo from a camera with a 3x lens (a claim we’re sure to test).

The large sensor covers the hardware part, the updated Super Nightscape mode handles the software part. It has a sibling in the Ultra Nightscape Video mode and for patient star-gazers, Starry Mode is now available for videos too (the first such mode on a phone). If you have an hour, the phone can snap 240 frames (each 15 seconds apart) and string them into an 8 second video that shows the movement of the night sky.

The 8MP ultrawide camera has a lens with an f/2.25 aperture and 119º field of view. Finally, a 2MP macro cam and a 2MP B&W camera round up the quartet on the back. On the front is a 16MP selfie camera (IMX471, f/2.45).

Speaking of the front, the realme 8 Pro has a 6.4” Super AMOLED display. It’s not quite the same panel as on the 7 Pro, this one is brighter with a peak of 1,000 nits. Another upgrade is the 180Hz touch sampling rate, but that is of limited use when the display refreshes at 60Hz.
Moving on, the 4,500 mAh battery promises up 20 hours of uninterrupted YouTube videos or 8 hours of gaming. And the supplied 65W charger can refill half of it in 17 minutes, the other half takes 30 more minutes.Note that the phone actually charges at 50W. The older realme 7 Pro did support 65W (and it’s actually faster too – its 4,500 mAh battery gets to 50% in 12 minutes and to 100% in 34 minutes).

Realme 8

The Realme 8 will also be compared to its predecessor (to the Realme 7 that launched in Asia, at least). It drops the 90Hz IPS LCD for a 60Hz Super AMOLED. In fact, this appears to be the same panel as on the Pro – 6.4”, 1080p+, 1,000 nits peak brightness and 180Hz touch sampling rate.
However, the vanilla model switches to the Helio G95, which was also used in the Realme 7. When we reviewed the 7 and 7 Pro last year, we found that the G95 has a slightly slower CPU and a slightly faster GPU.

It also helps that realme beefed up the cooling by switching the carbon fiber setup with copper (which improved cooling efficiency by 14%). But this is realme’s camera-focused line (a different series focuses on chipset performance), so let’s look at the camera.

It’s the same as the realme 7 camera, starting with the 64MP main module, following that with the 8MP ultra wide-angle (119º) camera and the two additional modules (2MP macro, 2MP B&W). The phone still can’t shoot 4K video, that is a privilege reserved for Pro owners.

The 5,000 mAh battery is the same too with the same 30W Dart charger. 50% charge can be achieved in 26 minutes, a full charge takes a total of 65 minutes. And here’s something funny – the vanilla realme 8 advertises 23 hours of YouTube videos and 10 hours of gaming. If you compare to the battery claims of the Pro, it only promises 20 hours of YouTube and 8 hours of gaming. The MediaTek is a 12nm chipset, the Snapdragon is an 8nm chip, so you’d think the roles would be reversed (especially considering the identical screens on the two models). One relatively important change is that the phone now comes with 128GB storage as standard, however a trade-off was made. The base model starts with 4GB of RAM (6GB and 8GB options are available too). There’s a dedicated spot for a microSD card if you need more storage.

Phones / Xiaomi To Equip The New Mi Mix With A Liquid Lens by kimmjacobs: 8:59pm On Mar 31, 2021
Xiaomi will bring back the Mi Mix series at the March 29 launch. In a teaser, the company revealed the phone will have a camera with a liquid lens, researched and developed in-house. It is supposed to imitate how the human eye works and how it focuses instantly on objects at different distances.

Xiaomi calls the technology “Bionic photography” and is essentially a transparent fluid wrapped from by ultra-thin film that can change the curvature of the lens to achieve rapid refocusing and minimize distortion. According to the official Weibo post, this fluid has high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion and is extremely resistant to environmental factors.

The company filled the announcement with pretty powerful words, but it's still unclear what the applications of the technology will be in smartphones.

While the idea of having a camera change focal length and thus using the same sensor for, say, regular and ultrawide or regular and telephoto cameras is cool we doubt it will be feasible here. More likely we are looking at minimizing distortion when shooting with ultrawide lenses eliminating the need for destructive post-shot corrections. We'll find out for sure in four days.

Science/Technology / Huawei Too Expects To Sell Significantly Fewer Smartphones This Year by kimmjacobs: 2:57pm On Feb 22, 2021
Huawei’s legal problems in the United States might not come to an end too soon, not even under a new administration, and by the looks of things, the Chinese tech giants expects its smartphone business to struggle not only in the States but also elsewhere.

According to a report form Nikkei Asia, Huawei has substantially reduced its component orders from suppliers, with some sources indicating the company expects to build between 70 and 80 million smartphones in 2021.

This means the Chinese firm is preparing for a drop of no less than 60 percent from close to 189 million phones shipped last year.

And it’s getting worse. People with knowledge of the matter said Huawei could end up ordering components for just 50 million devices, all because it expect the sales to decline even further throughout the year.
Huawei tight-lipped on everything

In the meantime, Huawei has remained completely tight-lipped on this production adjustments, especially because the company still hopes the legal problems in the US would eventually come to an end.

President Joe Biden’s nominee for Commerce secretary, Gina Raimondo, however, said earlier this month that removing Huawei from the Entity List isn’t something they’re planning to do if there’s any national risk involved.

“I understand that parties are placed on the Entity List and the Military End User List generally because they pose a risk to U.S. national security or foreign policy interests,” Raimondo, the Democratic governor of Rhode Island, was quoted as saying by Bloomberg. “I currently have no reason to believe that entities on those lists should not be there. If confirmed, I look forward to a briefing on these entities and others of concern.”

In the meantime, Huawei has invested aggressively in its very own operating system and replacements for Google services, though it’s pretty clear customers worldwide would rather have the real deal.

Science/Technology / Samsung Could Launch An Android Smartwatch This Year by kimmjacobs: 2:41pm On Feb 22, 2021
Samsung is investing aggressively in wearables, and needless to say, smartwatches are an important part of this category of devices for the South Korean firm.

So far, however, Samsung has been insisting on Tizen, its very own operating system also powering smartwatches and which the company has tried to grow as much as possible with support for third-party app developers across the world.

For 2021, however, the company could eventually change its mind, and instead of releasing a new Tizen smartwatch, Samsung could end up installing Android.

So in theory, if a leak from Ice Universe is anything to go by, Samsung could launch its very own Android smartwatch at one point in 2021, thus replacing Tizen for at least one product.
Launching later this year

At this point, it’s not yet clear if Tizen is supposed to eventually get the ax, but on the other hand, this seems rather unlikely, especially given all the effort Samsung has put into getting this operating system right.

At the same time, Wear OS is seriously lagging behind rivals like Apple’s watchOS, with most devices currently on the market coming with important shortcomings, often caused by the OS itself.

On the other hand, Google has recently completed the takeover of Fitbit, one of the leaders in the smartwatch and activity tracking market. So in the long term, Google could be planning some pretty big improvements for Wear OS or even end up developing a new version of the operating system from scratch, thus rebooting its smartwatch efforts completely.

For now, however, there’s a lot we don’t know about the direction not only Google but Samsung too plans to use in the smartwatch market. If Ice Universe is right, we should hear more about Samsung’s upcoming Android smartwatch rather sooner than later.

Science/Technology / Honk Is A New Kind Of Messaging App For Real-time, Disappearing Chats by kimmjacobs: 1:59pm On Dec 24, 2020
Honk wants to usher in real-time messaging. Instant messaging? That's passé for Honk. The iPhone-only app launched Tuesday globally after months of testing, with the promise of an in-the-moment messaging experience. On Honk, your messages are shown to the other person as you type, right down to that typo, extra space, or the pause to think something over. There is no send button because there's no need for it. And you only have 160 characters (about the size of a traditional SMS text message) to convey your thoughts. Once you hit the limit, you hit a refresh button to start from scratch. Predictably, Honk has no chat history.

In a way, Honk is essentially taking Google Docs' real-time collaboration and fusing it with the concept of disappearing messages, pioneered by Snapchat and since adopted by almost everyone including Facebook across its suite of apps, including WhatsApp and Messenger. Honk is unlike most messaging tools but it's still going up against all of them due to sheer network effect. And in India it has the added hurdle of not being on Android yet, where most of the country's smartphone users are.

At this point, you're probably wondering why it's called “Honk”. Well, that's because the app literally has a Honk button to help you get someone's attention. The other person will be flooded with notifications if they're outside the app, or an array of emoji if they're in the app. Yes, you can repeatedly hit the Honk button just as most Indian drivers do on the road — I just realised how thankful I am of all the car honks I've been saved from, thanks to the lockdown. And because Honk is designed around being in the moment, it will notify people the moment someone leaves a chat.

Honk has a bunch of customisation features too. You can change the colour of the conversation bubbles (the top one shows incoming messages, you type in the bottom one). You can pick the emoji skin colour you prefer, which will reflect everywhere across Honk. And you can also assign certain emoji to a word or phrase. Honk calls it “Magic Words”. Every time you type the said word or phrase, the emoji you selected will appear next to the word and float up. Emojis have their own section called “Reactions”, wherein tapping on preselected emoji creates an effect similar to iMessage's “Send with Echo”. You can type in regular emoji using your keyboard too. The one thing that Honk seems to be missing right now is a dark mode.

Webmasters / Microsoft Confirms A New Issue In Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4482887 by kimmjacobs: 11:52pm On Mar 09, 2019
Microsoft has just acknowledged a new issue in Windows 10 version 1809 cumulative update KB4482887, as the company says it received reports that gaming performance could be impacted.

In an update to the original KB4482887 page, Microsoft explains that it has already started work on a fix, and it should be included in an upcoming release.

“After installing KB4482887, users may notice graphics and mouse performance degradation with desktop gaming when playing certain games (eg: Destiny 2),” Microsoft explains.

The full list of games impacted by this performance issue isn’t available, but if you experience any slowdown on Windows 10 version 1809, the most recent cumulative update is most likely the culprit.
