Religion / Bans National Anthem And Nigerian Flag In Churches: Nnewi Diocese Denies Report by kingsvicks(m): 8:37am On Jul 09, 2021
Nnewi Anglican Diocese have denied the reports that the Diocese have banned the recitation of National Anthem and hoisting of National flag in churches in the Diocese.

In a press release made available to Anaedoonline.ng, the administrative Secretary of the Diocese, Ven. Nelson Iluno, revealed that the Bishop of Nnewi, His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, did not ban any national symbol, noting that there is no evidence to support such notions.

According to him, the Diocese of Nnewi (Anglican Communion) recognizes the National Anthem and National Pledge, Nigerian Flag and Coat of Arm as common properties and national symbols of Nigeria.

He noted that the Diocese of Nnewi frowns at citizens who handles these national symbols anyhow, revealing that the Nigerian Flag and National Anthem is important to all good citizens.

The press release reads;

The Bishop of Nnewi did not ban any national symbol. There is no evidence to support such notions. The Bishop of Nnewi was wrongly quoted.

The Diocese of Nnewi (Anglican Communion) recognizes the National Anthem and National Pledge, Nigerian Flag and Coat of Arm as common properties and national symbols of Nigeria. The Diocese of Nnewi frowns at citizens who handles these national symbols anyhow. Nigerian Flag and National Anthem are important to all good citizens. Citizens are free to use it for good intentions. In fact, we have all these national symbols in our schools and some offices. At our recent school routine visitation for supervision and inspection, we encouraged the head teachers, teachers and students to recognize the values and beauty of these national symbols, including official portraits.

It may interest you to know that immediately the Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, became the Bishop of the Diocese of Nnewi in 2019, he introduced Diocesan flag to be used in all Diocesan ceremonial functions. Prior to that, the apex church – Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) introduced Church of Nigeria flag as one of the national church symbols.

The Bishop of Nnewi saw the Diocesan flag as one of the symbols of the Diocese which the church-based organizations and fellowship should equally recognized.

He encourages the members of the Diocese to embrace the Diocesan Anthem which was formulated before he became the Bishop of Nnewi. He enjoins the choristers, Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade, and other youth organizations to join in chanting the Diocesan Anthem during divine services and Diocesan ceremonial activities.

Poor leadership or governance is our main headache, not national symbols. People are not happy because of the way things are being done today in Nigeria. It has resulted in many agitations.

However, the Diocese of Nnewi is ever ready to support a movement that will entrench good governance for the citizens of this country.

We clamor for a country where government is open, accountable and responsive to the yearning of the people. We want to see a nation where healthcare, quality education, potable water, electricity, transportation, communication will become available to all our people no matter where they are in the nation.

We want a country where security of life and property will be a reality.

Thanks.

Nnewi Anglican Bishop Bans National Anthem And Nigeria Flag In Churches
--------

The Anglican Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Ndubusi Chukwuka Obi, has revealed the reason why he suspended the singing of National Anthem and hosting of Nigeria flag in churches in Nnewi Anglican Diocese.

The Bishop who has been very critical about the need for restructuring of Nigeria revealed that he suspended the recitation of Nigeria National Anthem in Diocesan events and hosting of Nigeria flag in all the churches in the Diocese, in protest of the maladministration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, there is no leadership in Nigeria, and the country has become a ship with no captain.

“Nigeria has become more divided in President Buhari administration, in every part of Nigeria, there is agitation for either secession or injustice, President Buhari has failed woefully, he has redefined the concept of leadership in Nigeria”

“If you look at the pattern of appointment, a part of Nigeria is always favoured in appointment, what our President runs in Nigeria is government of the Fulani by the Fulani and for the Fulani’s.

“People are no longer comfortable being in Nigeria, and the worst of it all is that you cannot even protest or talk against the government, everybody is afraid”

Continuing, he expressed displeasure on how security agencies especially the army who have been deployed in the east, are subjecting the citizens to inhuman treatment, he wondered why security has not been deployed in the north where schoolchildren are kidnapped almost on daily basis.

Politics / Peace Corps: We Did Not Pass Your Bill, Senate Replies Chinedu Nneji by kingsvicks(m): 9:31pm On Jul 27, 2017
- The Nigerian Senate has urged the federal government of
Nigeria to give statutory backing to the existing Peace Corps
of Nigeria
- This was sequel to the report of the Senate committee on
judiciary, human rights and legal matters, urging the Senate to
go ahead with the adoption of the conference committee
report
- The Senate's move was however misunderstood in certain
quarters
The Nigerian Senate has clarified the ambiguity emanating
from the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill passed on Tuesday, July
25.
NAIJ.com gathered that two different groups had laid claims
to the Bill passed While Ambassador Dickson Akoh, the National Commandant
of Peace Corps of Nigeria had addressed the press, thanking
the National Assembly for "restoring hope to the Nigerian
youths"; Dr Chinedu Nneji, Commandant General of National
Unity and Peace Corps had also thanked the National
Assembly for passing the bill via a media statement.Dr Akoh's Peace Corps of Nigeria has been certified as the
beneficiary of the recent Senate's action. Photo credit: Peace
Corps of Nigeria
Reacting to the controversies surrounding the bill, the Senate
Spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said the bill passed
into law by the National Assembly was to give legal backing to
the existing Peace Corps of Nigeria, under Akoh.
Senator Abdullahi who made the statement on Thursday, July
27 while addressing National Assembly correspondents, said
the report in some quarters that the National Assembly
passed and adopted the National Unity and Peace Corps Bill
was misleading.
According to the the seantor, the National Unity and Peace
Corps Bill did not pass through the House of Representatives
and as such, the Senate could not force it on the them.“Let me say that, in the Senate, we had the Nigerian Peace
Corps Bill and we also had the National Unity and Peace
Corps Bill.
“When we were considering the Peace Corps Bill, an
observation was raised that there was another bill which has
similar objectives, that was the National Unity and Peace
Corps Bill.
“So it was agreed that the bill should be incorporated into the
Nigerian Peace Corps Bill. That was done. When we did that,
we then passed our own version,” he said.
Senator Abdullahi added that it was during the conference
committee to harmonise the two versions of the bill passed,
that the National Unity and Peace Corps Bill was removed and
the lower house version was adopted. He said: “The House of Reps maintained, that there was no bill
called the National Unity and Peace Corps Bill. So, there was
no basis for harmonisation. They maintained their stand that
the only bill they passed was the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill, for
which we also considered.
“So, at that point of harmonisation, the conference committee
adopted the position of the House of Reps.
“Effectively, what this means is that, the only agency which we
considered its bill was the bill that said, the Peace Corps of
Nigeria and, of course, dissolution within the context of that
bill only referred to Peace Corps of Nigeria.
“What that means effectively is that, the bill that says National
Unity and Peace Corps Bill is still intact, there is no provision
in our law where we have even touched it.
“We want to advise Nigerians to be guided by what we have
done, there should be no ambiguity.
“We know there are people out there who are claiming that
the Bill we passed affected them, I don't think that is the
correct picture.
“The bill we passed and adopted, was the one promoted by
the Peace Corps of Nigeria under Mr Dickson Akoh,” the
Senate spokesman explained. He however said the bill made provision for any group that is
peaceful and with similar objective, to approach the Nigerian
Peace Corps and be incorporated.

Politics / Senate Finally Pass Peace Corps by kingsvicks(m): 2:56pm On Jul 25, 2017
The Senate on Tuesday finally passed a bill to make the
Nigerian Peace Corps a para-military agency.
The Senate adopted the conference report on the bill to
establish the Nigerian Peace Corps, after it was so advised
by its committee on judiciary, human rights and legal
matters.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives had
separately passed the bill last year.
However, after the harmonisation of the two separate bills,
the Senate had rejected the harmonised version, which has
now been approved.
The bill will be sent to President Muhammadu Buhari for
assent after the House also approves the harmonised
version.
It is not clear if the presidency will approve of the bill as
several departments in the executive including the police
and the military are opposed to the legalisation of the
Peace Corps which is currently a private NGO.
Details later…

Politics / Senate To Determine The Fate Of Peace Corps Today by kingsvicks(m): 11:52am On Jul 25, 2017
Senate to determine Peace Corps fate today

July 25, 2017

Nigerian Senate

The Senate will on Tuesday take a decision on the statutory backing sought for the Nigeria Peace Corps to become a para-military group.

The Senate is expected to take decision on the bill to give statutory status to NPC, according to the day’s order paper.

The bill had scaled third reading hurdle at both Chambers of the National of the National Assembly, but, on May 2, it suffered setback after the Senate declined adoption of the conference report on the proposed legislation.

At the time, the lawmakers who opposed the NPC, including Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio and James Manager, PDP-Delta, cited opposition from the security agencies and a litigation involving those agencies and the promoters of the peace corps.

Then, the Senate resolved to refer the report to the David Umaru-led committee on Human Rights, Judiciary and Legal Matters for advice on the issues raised against the passage of the bill.

In Tuesday’s order paper, the substantive report on the bill by Nafada Bayero and the report on issues raised against the bill on May 2 have been listed.

Last Thursday, Senate President Bukola Saraki had said the reports had to be ready for “final decision” by this week.

Also, the bill for the establishment of Nigerian Financial Intelligence Agency, which seeks to strip the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of the control over the existing financial intelligence unit, is also slated for second reading in today’s order paper

The bill was just passed for first reading last week. The Senate had said the bill would be given accelerated consideration to help save Nigeria from expulsion from the Egmont Group, which had suspended the country over concerns NFIU lacks legal backing for independence.

The EFCC is opposed to total autonomy for the NFIU.

The report on the bill to further alter the 1999 Constitution will also be considered. The report will be presented by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and decision on it will be through electronic voting, according to the order paper.

Politics / Secession: Peace Corps Applauds Osibanjo's Maturity. by kingsvicks(m): 7:01am On Jul 11, 2017
Secession: Peace corps applauds Osinbajo’s maturity, warns youths against been unpatriotic.

The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), has commended the Nigerian Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for the mature way he has handled the affairs of the country, in relation with many hate speeches and threats of secession.
This was even, as the organisation has urged Nigerian youths to be patriotic and not allow themselves to be used by “self-serving politicians” and the elites.
Addressing newsmen at the Youth House, Abuja, on Monday, in commemoration of the 19th anniversary of the Corps, the National Commandant, Amb. (Dr.) Dickson Akoh, challenged Nigerian leaders at all levels, to emulate the leadership style of the Acting President in addressing delicate issues, rather using confrontation and coercion.

“We challenge leaders of different levels of our society to emulate the approach adopted by the Acting President in resorting to consultation, dialogue and integrated negotiations as a fundamental prerequisite for peace and social order.

“This approach has proven to be more productive as against confrontation and coercion.

“Our youth, who are the dependable beacon and stronghold of hope for this generation, should constantly be conscious of the ‘use and dump’ attitudes of self-serving politicians, sectional warlords and elites, and look inward on their roles as agents of positive change and nation-building. Our youth should resist any attempt to be drafted into fanning the embers of disintegration”, he remarked

The Corps vowed to continue in championing the course of sensitising the youths and general populace across the country, on the need to support genuine government policies and programmes, and the sustenance of Nigeria’s nationhood.
Akoh also used the occasion of Peace Corps’ 19th anniversary, to call on Nigerians to “commit the health of our dear President, Muhammadu Buhari in prayers and to pray for his speedy recovery, to enable him come back to steer the ship of the state forward”.
On the Bill for an Act to establish Nigerian Peace Corps, which is currently waiting assent, Akoh said, both Houses of the National Assembly had already passed the Bill, adding that, the Senate would soon adopt the conference committee report as done by the green chamber, expressing optimism that the Bill would recieve speedy assent from the Presidency.
In his remarks, the President of National Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Murtala Muhammad Garba, enjoined the youth to join hands with the Peace Corps of Nigeria, in its course of promotion of peace, national unity and nation-building.
Garba said, “as a youth based organisation, the NYCN would join hand together with the Peace Corps in all its programs”, adding that “anyone who stands against the organisation is standing against the interest of the Nigerian youth.‎”

We have no issues against Peace Corps – Civil Defence tells SenateBy Yemi Itodo on May 31, 2017

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), on Tuesday, urged the Senate to go ahead with the establishment of Nigerian Peace Corps, saying it had no opposition to it.

A Deputy Comptroller, Musa Farouk, who led the delegation on behalf of the Commandant General, said the services of Peace Corps officers were needed at the moment due to inadequate security operatives to combat the criminal activities in Nigeria.

Farouk told the lawmakers that Peace Corps and Civil Defence, according to the Bill before the Senate, have different roles, except for ‘Peace and Conflict Resolution’ clause, which he urged the Senate to streamline, so as to avoid conflicts in the future.

On the allegation of confrontations with other security agencies, the Civil Defence said it had not had any sour encounter with the Peace Corps since their existence, adding that, security operatives in Nigeria should cultivate inter-agency relationship amongst themselves, to be able to win the war against crime, instead of fighting each other.

The Senate Committee Chairman on Judiciary and Human Rights, Senator David Umaru, said his committee, in the course of the investigative hearing, had earlier invited the Nigerian Army, Department of State Security (DSS) and the Police, to know if the establishment of Peace Corps could pose any security threat to the country.

It could be recalled that, the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill was passed at both Houses of the National Assembly in 2016, and a conference committee of both chambers inaugurated to harmonize the 2 versions of the Bill.

While the House of Representatives adopted its report in January 2017, the Senate has been preoccupied with alot of issues, ranging from the trial of the National Commandant of Peace Corps, Dickson Akoh, and some undercurrent interests.

To put an end to these, the Senate, during its plenary recently, mandated its standing committee on judiciary to conduct an investigation and subsequently advise the red chamber on the next legislative action.

According to the peace corps Facebook release:

AKOH DEFENDS PEACE CORPS BILL BEFORE SENATE COMMITTEE ON JUDICIARY The National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), Amb. (Dr) Dickson Akoh, today was invited alongside the Commandant-General of the National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC), Dr Chinedu Nneji by the Senate Committee on Judiciary to deliberate on the Conference Committee report on the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill. The deliberation climaxing into defence by the National Commandant took place at the Committee's Conference room of the National Assembly and was attended by members of the Committee, the media and surprisingly the Founder of NUPEC Prof. Humphrey Ogoegbunam. In his brilliant presentation, Dr Akoh gave an expositional analysis of the origin of the Bill and the legislative processes it underwent right from the House of Representatives to the Senate, culminating in the Conference Committee on harmonization. The National Commandant rubbished the fallacious position of the Commandant-General of NUPEC, Dr Chinedu Nneji, a position that was collaborated by the Founder of NUPEC, who insisted that Nneji hijacked the organization from him and even went to the extent of threatening his life. In his presentation, the Founder of NUPEC pointed out how he was being sidelined on several occasions of partaking in the activities of the Bill to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps. He further denied the claims by Dr Nneji of being present at the Public Hearing which was organized by the Senate Committee on Interior. Dr Akoh who said that the harassment from the Police was an unjust punishment for the sins of Dr Nneji, attributed all the controversies surrounding the Peace Corps of Nigeria to the desperation of the Commandant-General of NUPEC, Dr Chinedu which is aimed at rubbishing him just the same way he did to the Founder of NUPEC, Prof. Humphrey with a view to reaping where he did not sow. However, the National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dr Akoh impressed the Committee members with the articulate way and manner he responded to all the questions put before him with facts and figures as backing documents. Meanwhile, the Committee Chairman, Senator David Umaru has given both Dr Akoh and Dr Nneji two days to tender written submissions on their various positions to the Committee.

According to Oyo state commandant of the organisation, he stated on his facebook:

All officers in Oyo State Command, all what you need now is to thank God Almighty because today we were vindicated by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, even Senator Godswill Akbabio and Senator James Manager regretted their actions against us when the truth prevails. Obey all constituted authorities and uphold the PCN Constitution. After God Almighty let all of us thank Almighty God. We are still celebrating in Abuja. Politics / Police Looses 11.2million To Peace Corps In Human Rights Suit by kingsvicks(m): 6:45pm On May 12, 2017
BREAKING: Police looses N11.2m to Peace Corps in human rights suit [DOCUMENTS]

Abuja High Court has issued a garnishee order attaching the money belonging to the Nigeria police in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the purpose of settlement of judgment debt incurred by the police in the judgment against them.

The garnishee order is directing the police to pay the incorporated trustees of Peace Corps of Nigeria and its National Commandant, Ambassador, Dickson Akoh a sum of N11,270,000 from its account with number 0020054161043 maintained at the CBN.

The N11.2m was awarded in favor of the judgment creditors by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja judgement delivered against the police on March 26,2014.

Although, the judgment was delivered in 2014, the National Commandant of the Peace Corps, Ambassador, Dickson Akoh was said to have prevailed on lawyers not to enforce the judgment in the interest of cordial relationship between his organization, police and other arms of security agencies.

However, the board of PCN was said to have resolved to enforce all the existing judgments against police, in view of the continued antagonism, harassment and intimidation of officers and men of the Corps.

Justice Sylvanus Chinedu Oriji, issued the garnishee order upon an exparte motion argued on behalf of the Peace Corps of Nigeria by Barrister J. E. Chukwuma.

In an enrollment of court order dated March 17,2017, and signed by the judge and the court Senior Registrar, Mr. Akpabio Micheal Brown, the garnishee was issued, so as to satisfy the judgment debt awarded against police and in favour of the creditors comprising Mr Shuaib, Mr Peter Ojoma and miss Joy Obakachi.

The court had in 2010 declared that, the directives, instructions, signals and orders issued to all police zones, officers and agents by police to ban and disrupt the activities of the Peace Corps were Unlawful and unconstitutional.

The court in the judgment declared that the detention of the officers of the Peace Corps at the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Garki and Apo Legislative Quarters police station for a total of 29 days was Unlawful and unconstitutional.

The judgment held that Peace Corps was a bonifide legal association surely authorized by law to carry out its functions with the aim of realizing its aims and objectives and that the seizure of its properties by police was also Unlawful and unconstitutional.

A restraining order was issued by the court against the police from disrupting the lawful activities of the Peace Corps and also ban police from further arresting or detaining the PCN officials.

Apart from the restraining orders, the court imposed a fine of N11.2m on police to be paid to the arrested and detained Peace Corps officers as compensation for the unjust, Unlawful and unconstitutional police action against them.

Meanwhile, the CBN being the custodian of the garnishee is to appear before the court on May 24 to show cause why the garnishee order nisi shall not be made absolute.

The judgment debtors comprising the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), are also to appear before the court on May 24 for the same purpose, to show cause why the garnishee order nisi shall not be made absolute.

Politics / PCN Bwari Command React To The Senate Consideration Of Their Bills by kingsvicks(m): 7:39am On May 03, 2017
SENATE: PEACE CORPS YET TRIUMPH OVER
MOUNTING CONSPIRACY AGAINST ITS
LEGALITY
The Bill for an Act to give statutory backing to
the already existing and functioning
# PeaceCorpsofNigeria scale a major hurdle today
as Senate refuses to stop its legislative business
on the Bill despite pressure from some quarters.
The Nigerian Senate turned down calls to stop
the Bill. The resolution was reached during
plenary after lawmakers in the Upper Chamber
debated on the matter.
While few lawmakers were against continued
legislative business on the Bill and wanted it to
be stopped, Majority of the Senators at the
plenary including the Senate Leader,
Distinguished Senator Ahmed Lawan and the
Senate President, His Excellency Senator Bukola
Saraki all spoke in favour of the Bill. Senator
James Manager of PDP Delta state stood
against the Bill even as Senator John Enoh also
of PDP strictly opposed him by pointing to the
numerous benefits that awaits Nigerian youths
after the passage of the Bill, he therefore
supported the Bill and wants it passed
immediately. "The Bill should be passed, it will
serve as a means of employment for Nigerian
youths," Senator Garba Binta submitted.
Meanwhile, the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmed
Lawan raised a point of order and stated that the
debate stages have passed hence, stopping the
Bill is no longer an option. He however noted that
the Bill could be delayed while the Senate is
briefed properly by its Committee on Judiciary
before the adoption of the Conference
Committee Report.
On his part, the Senate President Senator Bukola
Saraki said the Senate should implore proper
guidelines and consider the status of the Bill in
the Green chamber. The matter was referred to
Judiciary committee and is expected to report
back in two weeks for final consideration before
transmitting to The President and Commander-in
Chief of the Armed Forces for his assent.
Contrary to the erroneous reports by a section of
the media that the Bill has suffered a set back
during the Third Reading, it is important to note
here that the Bill for an Act to establish the
Nigerian Peace Corps has already scaled through
the 1st, 2nd, public hearing and 3rd reading.
It would be recalled that both the Senate and
House of Representatives laid the Report of the
Conference Committee in January 2017, where
the House adopted the Report, whereas the
Senate postponed legislative action on the
Report for another legislative day.
We urge all Officers and men of the Peace Corps
of Nigeria and the general public to be abreast
with the actual position of what transpired today
at the Senate. Directing the Conference
Committee Report to the Senate Committee on
Judiciary is simply meant to unravel some of the
few controversies raised during the deliberation
including the current status of the Peace Corps
of Nigeria.

Politics / National Commandant Nigerian Peace Corps Granted Bail by kingsvicks(m): 7:05pm On Mar 29, 2017
A Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, has granted the bail application filed by the detained National Commandant of Peace Corps of Nigeria, Amb. (Dr.) Dickson Akoh.

Akoh had, through his Counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), filed a bail application, backed by 18-paragraph affidavit, on Monday, 20th March, 2017, urging that he be released from the Police cell.
The Peace Corps boss was detained on 19th March, at the facility belonging to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Abuja, shortly after he turned himself in, having been told that the Police was looking for him.

Having been detained for 11 days, he was arraigned on Wednesday, with a 90-count charge, bordering on extortion of money, operating an outlaw organisation and wearing of Peace Corps uniform.

While leading a debate on the motion in support of the bail application, Barr. John Ochogwu of Kanu Agabi Chambers, urged the court, to grant Akoh bail on self recognition, adding that, the defendant had earlier been granted an administrative bail by the Police.

The Counsel to the Police, A.K Aliyu, argued through his counter affidavit that, “the 1st defendant would likely interfere with the witnesses, if granted bail.”

In his ruling, the trial Judge, J.T. Tsoho said, “since the defendants have been loaded with 90-count charge, which there is no capital offence therein, bail is in the discretion of the court.”

On the fear that the defendant would likely interfere with the witnesses, the Judge held that, “since the prosecution couldn’t advance reasons to show that, the defendant jumped the administrative granted him by the Police,” there was no reason for alarm.

The court therefore, granted Akoh bail, to the tune of N10m with a surety in the sum of N20m.

He was, however, asked to deposit his travel documents to the Deputy Court Registrar (DCR) and shall have access to them upon request, through application.

The court also requested that the surety must be an owner of a landed property in Abuja, the title documents should also be deposited with the DCR of the court.

He is to be remanded until the bail conditions are met, even as the Judge warned against holding him longer than 24 hours if his bail conditions are met.

Politics / Nigerian Lawmakers Could Override Buhari If He Vetoes Peace Corps Bill:-dogara by kingsvicks(m): 6:38pm On Mar 29, 2017
Nigerian legislators could override President Muhammadu Buhari if he vetoes the Nigerian Peace Corps bill which seeks to make the private organisation an agency of government, Speaker Yakubu Dogara said on Tuesday.

In an interactive session with journalists in Abuja, the speaker said the National Assembly believes the Peace Corps will bolster Nigeria’s current security and law enforcement capabilities.

If the president “doesn’t assent for whatever reason” to the Peace Corps Bill, “we are at liberty to recall it back to parliament and muster the two-thirds in the House and Senate and pass in spite of Mr. President’s veto,” Mr. Dogara said.

Mr. Dogara, however, said any action to be taken by the lawmakers would be determined by Mr. Buhari’s reaction to the bill, already passed by each of the chambers of the National Assembly.

The National Assembly’s passage of the Peace Corps Bill despite strong opposition from existing government agencies has set the group on a collision course with the police, State Security Service and the Nigerian Army.

On February 28, the Nigerian Army, police and the SSS in a coordinated mission stormed the Peace Corps’ head office in Abuja, arresting its founder, Dickson Akoh, and other national leaders while shutting the facility down.

The next day, the police paraded Mr. Akoh and his officials, 49 in total, and accused them of running an outlawed organisation with intent to perpetrate fraud and jeopardise national security.

The police said a 2013 “official gazette” of the Nigerian government “dissolved and proscribed illegal security outfits” which included the Peace Corps

Mr. Akoh, who heads the Peace Corps as its national commandant, and his officials were later released, but their office remained shut nationwide.

He was, however, rearrested on March 19, and has remained in police custody ever since.

But the Speaker said the parliament will not be distracted by the antics of existing security agencies, adding that the country cannot spend too much on security.

“We cannot overspend on the issue of protecting the lives and the properties of our citizens, we cannot,” he said.

‘A PRIDE OF THE SOCIETY’

Mr. Dogara said the police and other security agencies were acting in a manner similar to how they treated the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in the run up to its adoption by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

The Head of Service of the Federation, Independent National Electoral Commission, National Security Adviser, Ministry of Interior and the Federal Ministry of Health joined other security agencies to kick against passage of the Peace Corps bill in the National Assembly last year, citing issues from lack of sufficient funds to duplication of duties.

Most of them opposed establishment of the NSCDC, and its founder, Ade Abolurin, was arrested on numerous occasions.

Today, Mr. Dogara said, the NSCDC has become a force for good in the country, perhaps even more than the police.

“That was the same argument when the Civil Defence Bill was before the House, that it could not be funded, that they were divulging some of the powers of the police to the Civil Defence— that it would never work.

“At the end of the day all these were surmounted and now we have the Civil Defence that in some cases some citizens have said that they are more dependable than the conventional police.

“I see them everywhere I travel to and they have become a pride of the society,” Mr. Dogara said.

Politics / Continuous Detention Of Peaces Commandant Illegal:- Adeyanyu by kingsvicks(m): 6:28pm On Mar 29, 2017
Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Director, New Media, Prince Deji Adeyanju has condemned the continuous detention of the Peace Corps of Nigeria Commandant, Mr. Dickson Akoh as well as 49 other members of the corps by the Nigerian police over claim that the group and others like it“were acquiring weapons and conducting covert military training in different locations across the country.” In a statement made available to newsmen Wednesday, Mr. Adeyanju who said that the continuous detention of the Commandant is illegal also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to compel the security agencies in the country to operate within the limits of the law as stipulated in the constitution. “I condemn the continued arrest, detention and persecution of the Commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps, Mr. Dickson Akoh, the Nigerian Police Force. Mr. Akoh was arrested 9 days ago and was not arraigned within 48 hours as stipulated by the provisions of our Constitution.” “This is the second time the Nigerian Police are arresting Mr. Akoh in less than a month. A few weeks ago he was arrested along with 49 members of the organization during an operation that was characterized by indiscriminate violence on the part of the police. During their incarceration, several members sustained severe injuries while being tortured and were admitted at the Trauma Care Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja.” “It is unfortunate that the indiscriminate arrest, detention without charge or conviction and torture/brutalization of Nigerian citizens have become a recurring decimal under the President Muhammadu Buhari.” “I condemn the increasing, and often unnecessary, high-handedness on the Nigerian security agencies which are often characterized by a wanton disregard for the rule of law, a refusal to obey court orders, the indiscriminate arrest & detention of Nigerians, the brutalization of Nigerians which often goes un-investigated and unpunished, as well as the application of undue force which often results in the deaths of Nigerians.” “The nature of the operations of the Nigerian Police under the current administration has become increasingly unacceptable and as a people we refuse to accept it.” “I urge President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately compel the Nigerian Police, and indeed all security agencies, to apply a greater degree of professionalism and restraint in the conduct of their duties.” “I also urge President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Nigerian Police to either charge Mr. Akoh to court immediately or to release him unconditionally in accordance to the laws of our land.” “God bless Nigeria.”

Politics / Peace Corps Of Nigeria Alleges Smear Campaign by kingsvicks(m): 12:27pm On Aug 24, 2016
Peace Corps alleges smear campaign

The Peace Corps of Nigeria has alleged plans by some Nigerians and groups opposed to the Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps before the National Assembly to discredit the organisation.
The Corps Commandant-General, Mr. Dickson Akoh, told The AUTHORITY that a few persons who fear that the creation of the organisation will hurt their selfish interests have become panicky since the Bill seeking its establishment reached the Final Reading in both chambers of the National Assembly.
He disclosed that some groups had sponsored Bills in the National Assembly seeking the establishment of their own variants of the Nigerian Peace Corps, but that such Bills had “been killed on arrival.”
Akoh stated that groups, whose Bills were rejected by the federal lawmakers, were envious of the acceptance which greeted the Bill seeking the creation of Nigerian Peace Corps in the National Assembly, and “have been making frantic efforts to scuttle it.”
He described the opposition to the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps as “misguided”, explaining that the Peace Corps of America is very respected in that country, and that the proposed Nigerian Peace Corps will be fashioned after the American model to earn the respect and cooperation of Nigerians.
The several national and international recognition accorded the Corps, said Akoh, “Has also been a source of worry to those who do not mean well for the development of the youths of this great nation.”
According to the Commandant-General, the 18-year-old history of the Corps had been marred by harassment by the Police and Department of State Security (DSS), but that the Corps had always prevailed in court.
He said: “We have had a series of raids by the Police and DSS personnel on the false allegation that we are an illegal entity. On each occasion we have, like the Peace Corps we are, remained peaceful and sought redress within the ambit of the law. It might interest you to note that the Police and DSS are owing us several millions of Naira in court-awarded damages.
“We know where the attacks are coming from, but we remain undaunted. First, they lied to the Police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and then the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC). All these agencies investigated the spurious claims and cleared us. We have letters to such effect,” he stressed.
Akoh dismissed fears that the Nigerian Peace Corps will just be “another paramilitary organisation,” saying that the Corps will, among other things, partner with schools to promote nationalism, curb cultism, violence, strengthen friendship amongst Nigerian youths, and help engage thousands of unemployed Nigerian graduates who otherwise might be lured into crime.
