Nairaland / General / Re: FG To Take Over Expansion Of Lagos- Badagry Express Way by klas(m): 8:31am On Sep 23, 2014
Lagos - Badagry expressroad is a federal government road. For Lasg to have taken over its reconstruction means that FG must have agreed to refund the cost or concession it to Lasg to toll and recover its money.

If the FG now feels it has got money to handle it, all well and good. All we need is good road even if constructed by United Nations.

toolovely: Just surprised at people... When the fg announced that schools resume oct 16th, you where all here bashing d fg. Now because fashola directs schools to resume on oct 8, ur now hailing him... Hypocrites

Remember that the special adviser to the lagos governor issued a statement about a week ago on behalf of the state government that the September 22 date fixed by the FG is 'eminently justifiable' and that schools in lagos would resume on 22nd.

The reason for the new postponement is because the conditions laid down by the FG had not been fully complied with. These include provision of sanitation items and training of staff on Ebola. NUT had made it known that it's members would not teach until the conditions are met.

InwehAkpevwe: Even wen GEJ don talk say na 22nd sept 2014... Fashola d cleaver guy is saying sth else...

The date announced by the FG is advisory and the earliest date any school in the federation may reopen. Each state is to study its own peculiarity and make necessary adjustment.

Exposure to Ebola in lagos, rivers and to some extent Enugu states is not the same as Kwara for instance.

Even though the news is fake since the meeting had not been held as at the time he posted, FG should not fix 29 September because in that week, there are only 2 working days.

Wednesday, Oct 1 is independence day while thursday and friday october 2 and 3 will be public holidays for eid-el-kabir.
Foreign Affairs / Re: Ebola: Donald Trump Wants US To Stop All Flights From West Africa To The US by klas(m): 10:48am On Aug 06, 2014
Unless the man actually mean that all West Africans (not flights) should be banned from traveling, then there is no solution in his suggestion.

In the first instance, only four countries - Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Cape Verde have direct flights to US. I have been to US many times and have never taken direct flights. Infact, the mid-east airlines are my preferred choice. So how does flight ban solve the problem?

Secondly, what of non west Africans living in west africa?

If nigeria had banned flights from Liberia, Senegal and guinea earlier, how would that have prevented Sawyer from coming in? His flights were from Ghana to Togo to Nigeria. Those countries are not on Ebola list.

The solution is in WHO recommendation that the disease is not contagious until the patient actually fall ill. So an ill-looking passenger of whatever origin should be tested and monitored.

You are correct about the bold part as per this old thread:

https://www.nairaland.com/41255/breaking-news-atiku-defeats-obasanjo

It must have become clear to OBJokes that he could not unilaterally sack his deputy hence he tried the impeachment option but also failed. However that case did not go to the Supreme Court. If you have any link to prove otherwise please provide.

I wanted to reply you when you quoted my initial post but delafruita answered you already

But seeing that you are not satisfied, let me refresh your memory. The decision of the court was that even though obj and Atiku ran on the same ticket, they have separate electoral mandate. Their joint ticket ends the day they were elected not after.

In my post, I said judiciary. It does not matter whether the case ended in high, or appeal or supreme court. You don't need to pursue a bad case to the ultimate court.

Unfortunately the law does not work that way.
You can read up about how Amaechi became governor of Rivers state without standing for election in 2007.

mikeansy:

You forget that we have a situation where the truth and correct interpretation of the law is what favours a President who controls all the security forces and the country's revenue!

Not always. The same judiciary ruled against Obj in favour of Atiku when Atiku defected to ACN as a sitting vice- president.

I think pdp played into the hands of the defectors. The whole idea of the charade called the New-pdp was to create the impression that the pdp was factionalized thus providing the legal basis for the legislators to defect without repercussion.

Pdp should have wielded the big stick long ago e.g it could have embarked on re-registration of members then. Anybody that failed to register ceased to be member and cannot claim factionalisation.

Let us cut down on sentiments. For God sake, Stanbic is not firstbank, or uba, not even skyebank. How many customers do they have and what proportion of those customers transact business with the suspended organizations by using Stanbic card?

So, what will Stanbic try to achieve when it is not even the first choice bank of many Nigerians?

Mind u, in the case of quickteller, it is only airtime topup that is suspended not even the major service of quickteller.

Gtb once suspended using their ATM (machine not card) to settle quickteller payments. I don't even think they ever restore that service till now yet we didn't accuse them of improper business behavior.

Truly like someone said: Osanobua Niger Delta no dey sleep!

Get the facts right

1. He represents his ondo state constituency in the House of Representatives in Abuja not House of Assembly in Akure

2. He represents the oil producing riverine area of ondo state and which is a part of NNDC.

3. He is possibly an Ijaw from ondo state because his constituency covers the area habited by them

4. What is the big deal about Gwarinpa? We are not talking of Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse II here

[b]SUMMARY

First segment
How the Northern Peoples Congress won the 1959 Federal election without fielding a single candidate in the whole South and how Awolowo seeing the reality of the indomitability of the North planned to wrest power through coup since south can never defeat the north in a democratic election.

Second segment
Why the northern elders smuggled Yar'adua in with the connivance of the army chief without the knowledge of GEJ because they feared the southern acting president might do what Biya (a Cameroonian southern acting president) did to Ahidjo (an ailing Cameroonian northern substantive president) in the 80s

Third segment
Ekwueme hates the whole north with passion and that was why the north also paid him back in full measure during the pdp presidential primaries in 1999. He averred that Ekwueme was silly to believe that the 1983 buhari coup was targeted at him and not Shagari and that Ekwueme championed the idea of six geo-political zones in 1995 conference to split the north.

Car Talk / Re: Is It Better To Buy A Car Outright Or To Buy Using A Loan? by klas(m): 9:12pm On Nov 13, 2013
^^ That is what the insurance component is all about. It is for comprehensive insurance payable annually. The interest of the bank will be noted in the policy as the loss-payee. So the claim payment goes to the bank first not the borrower.
Car Talk / Re: Is It Better To Buy A Car Outright Or To Buy Using A Loan? by klas(m): 8:18pm On Nov 13, 2013
gtrust: where I dey:

Bank loan for cars:
-new comer 13-14%
- established credit rating 7%
- some bigger boys can still get special consideration at 4%

Direct loan from car dealers:
- Acura 2.9% max 60 months
- Kia 0.0% upto 84 months
- Ford 0.0% unto 60 months
- infiniti 2.9% 60 months
- Toyata 0.9% 60 months
-etc

some of these percentages are negotiable based on duration, amount of down payment, trade-in and which car you take etc...

N/B: You don't OWN the car until full payment is made.
If you default then the car can be repossessed!

Generally, with 0% to 2.99% I will rather take the car Loan!
Note there is also A LEASE arrangement where you just pay more and return the car say for example every year and pick a new one!
You know shaa that they're NOT worried about armer robbers etc.

it is your responsibility to insure your car and police will arrest you if you don't!

Now you are talking. In Nigeria this is the cost of the loan

Commitment fee - 1% of the total loan
Management fee -2% payable annually
Insurance cost - 10% of insurable value
Interest per annum - 18% to 23% compounding
Tenor. - 2 to 3 years

Is loan financing really an option in nigeria?

Business / Re: The Effect Of Sanusi's Exchange Policy - (Black-Market: N173 To $1) by klas(m): 7:40pm On Nov 13, 2013
Omila007:

Please I would love to be enlightened as to the benefits of forcefully making me source for foreign currencies for my international transactions?
Yes international transactions should be paid in our local currency Naira that is something that needs not to be questioned nor contested. Owing to the fact that naira is our legal tender and not other currencies.
But why financial institutions should ask citizens to bring USD or GBP for there foreign transactions still eludes me. A citizen has no business handling any currency that is not a legal tender in his country.

Let me explain a bit how it works

1. Naira is not a convertible currency unlike dollar, pound sterling, euro and very few other currencies in the world. Note that even China currency is not fully convertible

2. A convertible currency is the one that can be readily bought or sold without government restrictions, in order to purchase another currency. A convertible currency is a liquid instrument when compared to currencies tightly controlled by a central bank or other regulating authority.

3. There are two principal sources for forex in nigeria - through CBN (got from oil sale) and independent other sources. For every dollar or other convertible money you spent which is funded in naira, it means the CBN must fund it through our foreign reserve and collect naira from you otherwise you must fund it through independent sources (Bureau de change or black market).

4. Ordinarily, bureau de Change and black market should principally fund their operation from private non-oil sources but due to Naija factor, by way of round-tripping by banks, CBN ended up funding them from our foreign reserve. An illegality .

5. When everything was bouyant and with high oil prices and increasing foreign reserve, cbn could afford to turn blind eye to the abnormal funding but with decreasing oil revenue and reserve, it cannot continue on that note without economic disaster hence the action by cbn.

6. The depreciation of naira value in bdc and black market is a natural fall-out to show that it had all along been artificially and illegally propped up in the past. Unless there is increase in oil revenue, the current low exchange rate of dollar to naira in the official market cannot be sustained for long and naira value will have to depreciate also in the official market. You read in today's papers that our forex reserve had fallen to $44 billion from $49 billion it was some months ago, that is the effect of defending naira value in the official market by the cbn.

Politics / Re: Oduah Shuns House Committee Hearing As Cars Presented Are Different by klas(m): 6:53am On Oct 31, 2013
The due process that Coscharis man was talking about (as I understand it) include

1. He got NSA and SSS clearance to import bullet-proof vehicles as required by law.

2. BMW through Coscharis sponsored the sport festival hosted by Lagos state government which means lagos will not pay a kobo for the vehicles.

3. In accordance with normal practice in such situation, the federal ministry of finance gave import duty waivers for the free (sponsor) vehicles. The duty waiver was not granted because the vehicles were imported for the state govt but because they were sponsor vehicles so as to reduce the cost to the sponsor.

4. At the end of the sport event, the used cars are supposed to be sold off at reduced prices. Any shortfall that remain is regarded as advertisement cost. Note that the new buyers are required to pay a pro-rated import duty (part of what was initially waived) to the Customs just like if you buy auctioned goods at the embassies. So it is not as if the Customs will lose everything.

The inappropriate thing I could notice here is that not all the 300 vehicles that was promised for the sport event was imported for the event while the waiver authorization was used to import vehicles not related to the event.

The report does not indicate what eventually happened to the used vehicles and if duty was eventually paid by the subsequent buyers.

dewale2k: Nigeria’s first Lady, Patience Jonathan pose for pictures with President of Hansei University, Sung-Hae Kim

Wife of Nigeria’s president, Patience Jonathan, on Thursday added one more Honorary Doctorate degree to her gallery after a South Korean University honoured her.

It is Mrs. Jonathan’s fourth doctorate since becoming Nigeria’s First Lady.

The awarding institution, Hansei University, said they honoured Mrs. Jonathan because she had worked “hard for many good causes.”

“She’s a humanitarian who has dedicated her life to working for the less privileged in Nigeria and Africa especially for women and children,” president and Chancellor of Hansei University, Sung-Hae Kim said.

”Her vision as the defender of the poor in Nigeria fits into Hansei University’s motto of a practising Christian. Now she’s part of our community,” Prof. Kim added.

The university also said it chose her for the degree because of her dedication to prayer.

”I was surprised that she travelled here for the Church Growth International conference years back to pray for Nigeria. For her selfless work, Hansei University confers this degree on her,” Yonggi Cho, co-founder of the Hansei University.

“I was just doing my own thing not knowing that in far away Asia everything was being noted. I want to assure you all that with God’s help I will do more,” Mrs. Jonathan said, thanking the Koreans.

”My grandma used to say: `Whatever little you have, share; If you have a thousand and you can’t share, you won’t share a million if you have’.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the ceremony was attended by wives of the governors of Benue and Ebonyi, wives of the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, among other dignitaries.

Nigeria will be better only if we think better of it. A trainee scientist in one area should not be viewed as a trainee terrorist in another unless otherwise proven.

How i wish i was in your location i would have given u a bottle of wine.So many peeps here on NL just wake up to make nasty and baseless assumption all in the name of sentimental politics. They should ask themselves how the influential "Oyi of Oyi" Chief Chuba Okadigbo was booted out as the Senate President with all the popularity and charisma he had in the Hallowed chamber. In matter of the National Assembly what matters is the level of financial lobby to the Legislators and not a mere love or party support of the Speaker. Why should an APC member just wake up and decides that he will surely support the Speaker when he or she is lobbied by the Speaker's team? What those men consider first is the amount of cash throwned to them cause they have nothing to lose if Tambuwal is impeached. Some of the members don't even like him cause they were not favoured in committee sharing therefore they still have grudge against Mr Speaker. This might be the right time for them to pay him back.

Name any Speaker or President of the Senate of Northern origin that was ever impeached. Even Salisu Buhari of Toronto fame voluntarily stepped down and participated in hand picking his successor - Ghali Naabaa. Upon all what Na'abaa did to Obj including impeachment attempt and the presidency several attempts to remove him, he completed his term. His successor - Bello Masari also completed his own tenure despite being anti-third term yet Nnamani (the then senate president) was harangued for the same offence by the presidency. David Mark is about completing 8 years term.

Okadigbo was easily removed because almost all eastern senators wanted to taste that seat hence the backstabbing and lack of unanimity in the southeast caucus thus allowing enemy to wedge in.
