Travel / Re: S'African Police Invade Nigerian Embassy Over Visa Refusal To South Africans by klas(m): 8:54am On Dec 05, 2011
So because somebody alleged that visa denial was because of bribe, it means he must be right and he is above making false accusation?

He said that visa had already been pasted on their passport but was cancelled by the official in annoyance because no bribe was given. Is that possible?

No embassy allows you to peruse your processed visa on its premises, you have to go out first. So how did the passports get back to the embassy officials for them to cancel the initial 'valid visa' and even seize the passports? And if the passports had not been handed over to the applicants, How did they know the decision of the embassy?

The police that wanted to forcefully enter, were they going to arrest diplomats or forcefully retrieve the passports?

All the time SA had been denying Nigerian visas, why have we not been alleging bribery?
Education / Re: ASUU To Begin Indefinite Nationwide Strike Today by klas(m): 6:43am On Dec 05, 2011
ASUU should tell us the details of the agreement that the govt reneged on. The only one hitherto publicised is about extending the retirement of all lecturers to 70 years not just only professors.

If the strike is because this, then it is rascality because the bone of contention is not whether fed govt accept but that national assembly should pass it into law rather than fed govt just issuing a circular to that effect.

If the retirement age of civil servants is 55, why should ASUU strike after being granted extra 15 years. Even below 50 years, what is the productivity of most of them?

I think we should give this man the same treatment Black Scorpion gave his compatriot. Shave his head and let him write ten thousand times - " I am just a nosy bloody englishman, I have no say in Nigerian affairs".

UK that criminalised a woman having 2 husbands or a man having more than 1 wife, now just realised that anti-homo is anti-human rights!

The funny thing about all these homo supporters is that they have all been born. If their parents had taken homo way, at least the world would have been saved of these irritating rantings.

Business / Re: First Private Refinery Begins Operation In Rivers State by klas(m): 10:53pm On Nov 28, 2011
[b]I need to be educated. How does subsidy affect refinery operation or profitability? Subsidy arise because pump price charged consumers is less than the the cost to the marketers and government has to pay the difference. The cost to the marketer = refinery selling price + shipping, storage and transportation cost.

Subsidy or no subsidy, local refining or foreign refining, marketers must pay full refinery selling price to the refinery before lifting. It makes no difference to the refinery whether the marketer recovers the pump price fully from the consumers (unsubsidised) or partly from consumers and partly from government (subsidised).

Fuel is already correctly priced in Nigeria from the point of view of fuel marketers and refineries only that government pays part of it instead of the public paying fully.

By the way, the primary objective of the refinery that just opened is to fuel the operations of its parent company. It proposes to sell to the public because its production exceeds the requirement of its parent company for now.

Autos / Re: Does Navigation System Work In Nigeria? by klas(m): 10:20am On Nov 26, 2011
Navigation system on nokia will show you even the service lanes on ikorodu road. It covers the remotest part of nigeria and you can search for place of interest - shops, fuel stations, hotels etc. I think same applies to garmin gps

However, is there nigeria dvd for factory fitted car navigation?

Wrong. Threads on this section typically do not span more than two pages; you can verify this by looking at all the threads on the first page. If this were posted on the politics section, then that would be a different case.

Car Talk / Re: Lagos New Number Plates Now Available (Pictures) by klas(m): 9:13pm On Nov 19, 2011
@ sdbaba, Strictly by law, national assembly should not give direct executive order to a government agency. Such order can be ignored without any repercussion. It is their duty to make laws not to implement or enforce such - those are duties of the executive and judiciary respectively.

Where an issue does not require making a new law to implement, what the legislature can do and should do is to pass a resolution to officially state their misgivings about that issue. But note that resolutions unlike bills passed into laws are not binding on the executive to implement.

By the way, the house of reps only 'suspended' the implementation for four weeks for its committee to 'investigate' and report back to it. In all probability, the committee will report it is now satisfied with the process.

Bear in mind that the President has already publicly launched this project since September 2 2011 and paid for his licence at that ceremony in which he publicly acknowledged that he (as the vice president then) asked frsc to introduce the new scheme. Subsequent terrorist actions accentuated the need. In this clime, national assembly will not easily repudiate the president's action. Not on this type of issue anyway

Car Talk / Re: Lagos New Number Plates Now Available (Pictures) by klas(m): 4:17am On Nov 19, 2011
Let us clear the misconception about the cost of the new number plate and juxaposition in the numbers arrangement

1 There is a difference between the cost of registering a vehicle and the cost of a number plate. Number plate cost is just a component of the cost of registration.

In the old dispensation, number plate cost N5,000 for regular but you still have to pay other charges like registration itself, registration booklet, proof of ownership, autoreg fees and a host of others which sometimes add up to between N10k and N25k.

In the new dispensation, the regular number plate cost jerked up from N5k to N15k. When other vehicle registration charges are added, the total registration cost for new vehicles comes up to between N32,300 and N40,950 announced by lagos government

However, for those changing from old to new number (ie previously registered vehicles), they only need to buy the new number plate at N10k and if the vehicle is due for renewal, there will be the normal cost of renewal in addition.

Note that it is the states boards of internal revenue acting as joint tax board that fix vehicle registration fees not the frsc

2 On the issue of juxaposition in arrangement of numbers on the plate i.e placing serial code last instead of first. This nominal change is done to avoid confusion during the transition period from sept 2011 and august 2012.

The effect of the change of number plates renders all previous registration numbers invalid effective from august 31 2012. simple. So, when you go for replacement, it is not your old number that will be given to you. Like the one Inspired posted above, KJA-193-AA. This is a new number for a new vehicle aparently bought less than two months ago but there must be an existing vehicle registered under the outgoing number as AA-193-KJA. If there is no change in arrangement of numbers, there will be two vehicles having the same number at least up to august 2012.
Politics / Re: FG To Publish List Of Terrorists And Sponsors by klas(m): 5:45am On Nov 08, 2011
Typical Nigerian way of crying when the head is already cut off. Why blaming GEJ. He did not make the anti-terrorism law. It was passed by the National Assembly. The bill had been with the legislative house since the time of Yar-adua. Public hearings were conducted by the parliament for people to make contributions. The passage of the law was only accelerated after the bombings of the police HQ and UN building. Nlanders should have shouted then not now.

Mastercard and visa card issued by most nigerian banks like gtb, access, diamond and zenith can be used worldwide both on atm and pos. Guaranteed. Verve cards appear to be limited to Nigeria but since you are already in UAE, why not try it on atm first? If it works on atm, it will work on pos in stores.

Travel / Re: Anyone Applied At South Africa Embassy - Abuja? by klas(m): 10:08pm On Oct 06, 2011
Yes. I submitted my application on Friday 16/9 and collected the visa wednesday 21/9. That is 4 working days both days inclusive. But note that visitors visa application is submitted at VFS office at asokoro not the embassy itself. You will also collect the result from there. You have no direct dealings with the embassy whatsoever.

I must say that the VFS gives first class service in their abuja office. Not even Aso villa gives that kind of service and comfort to nigerians.
Car Talk / Re: Are Car Trackers Inclusive In The Sim Registration? by klas(m): 9:35am On Oct 03, 2011
Even if the stoppage is traceable to the tracker, it cannot be because of non registration. Nobody has been or can be blocked yet because harmonisation is still on. Note that some people registered directly with the service operators while many registered at the ncc registration points. Both are valid and until the harmonisation of the two is completed, nobody can know who has not registered.

Car Talk / Re: What Are The Pros, Cons And Costs Of Buying Salvaged Cars? by klas(m): 7:20am On Sep 27, 2011
We should differentiate between a vehicle involved in just an accident and a salvaged vehicle. A dent or fender bending accident will not be classified as salvage. A salvaged vehicle is beyond economic repair for the insurance company, so it must be very major accident or incident like flooding. Insurance companies are in business to make profit and will therefore not fritter money away by declaring minor accidented vehicle as salvage.

FG to sack security chiefs over collusion with Boko Haram

Panic as soldiers nab man with bomb in PH

By Kingsley   Omonobi, Abuja and George Onah Port Harcourt

The federal government is likely to sack some security chiefs over their collusion with Boko Haram, Saturday Vanguard has learnt.

It was also gathered that the Presidency has commenced investigation into how and when a ‘confirmed and hardened’ adherent of Boko Haram, Mr. Ali Tishau, who was in police detention on allegations of terrorism, was released to the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) on the request of a former Chief of Defence Intelligence (names with-held), found his way to the African Independent Television (AIT) to grant an interview where he claimed that ‘Nigeria police hid bomb warnings from the Presidency’.

.
.
.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that, “On the 27th of June 2011, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Babagana Mongonu, requested the Police force in writing, to hand over the suspect to the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), to enable the agency conclude their own investigation of Tishau, which was obliged by IGP Hafiz Ringim on 27th July 2011, with a proviso that the suspect be returned to the Police in line with normal security practice.

Politics / Re: Boko Haram Attacks Forced Us To Send Back Non-natives – Orji by klas(m): 6:09am On Sep 11, 2011
Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Ahamefule Orji has said the reason he is sending non-natives back to their home states is to enable the state to accommodate many Abia natives displaced in some crisis-ridden states of the nation by the activities of Boko Haram.

He made the explanations in a radio broadcast yesterday as part of the activities marking the 20th anniversary of the creation of the state and his 100 days in office. He said the move was a not vindictive measure but to, among other things, accommodate many Abia natives displaced in some crisis-ridden states.

He said further that the move would help the state government to implement the N18,000 minimum wage for workers, stressing that his administration was committed to the payment of the new minimum wage as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution as amended. “The compelling reasons for our action are as follow: there are many Abians displaced from the northern part of the country as a result of the activities of Boko Haram and others like them, who are anxiously waiting on government for re-absorption and rehabilitation.”

The governor noted that it would be difficult for his government to achieve its desire of satisfying its workforce with its present bloated workforce in which non-natives rank highest. “We can only achieve our desire of making our workers happy through the transfer of the non -indigenes in our civil service workforce to their states of origin.”

According to him, “the pupil-teacher ratio in our public schools is not encouraging, indicating that we have excess teachers who are virtually redundant. And the echelon of this profession is predominantly dominated by non-indigenes, to the major disadvantages of the indigenes who themselves need to be encouraged by promotion so that new people will be recruited to reduce unemployment. “Some time in the past, Abians working in other neighbouring states were disengaged and forced to return to their states for re-absorption. They were accordingly absorbed and non-indigenes from those states in Abia, have since been retained and peacefully accommodated.

Now that the state is committed to the payment of N18,000 minimum wage, the state cannot pay this if we silently continue to bear the burden of accommodating displaced Abians from other states, non-indigenes in the workforce and the existing workforce.”

From the bolded, why do people not think that it is the fellow south-easterners that will be affected by the eviction order. It is inconcievable that northerners dominate the teaching service in abia. He even referred to 'neighbouring states'.  Northern states are not abia's neighbours.

Politics / Re: Musdapher Is Acting Chief Justice As Katsina-alu Retires by klas(m): 3:54pm On Aug 28, 2011
[b]Sometimes I wonder about the significance of the south lead in western education if it cannot be used strategically to its advantage. In the succession list I posted above, one would think that there are no southerner supreme court justices. There are but supreme court justices are categorised as the chief justice and all others are associate justices. They are ranked by seniority on bench and must retire by age of 70. If you clock 70 as associate justice when you have a chief justice who is younger than you, you will never become a chief. North always take this into calculation since 1980s in presenting judges for promotion to supreme court and court of appeal even federal high court.

how many people know that the past 3, the current and the next 3 presidents of court of appeal are northerners. Even Ayo Salami is a northerner from kwara state.

The north first became the chief justice of nigeria in 1987 and will not relinquinsh the post till 2023 except miracle happens

afam4eva:

Why are all the Chief justices of the supreme court always from the North. Where's the federal presence in the judiciary.

They have positioned themselves like that. The succession plan is as follows

Mustapher (jigawa north) 2011 - 2012
Mrs Mukhtar (kano north) 2012 - 2014
Mohammed (taraba north) 2014 - 2016

Onnoghen from cross river may be there in 2016 after which it will revert to the north again until 2023 during which time F. F. Tabai and I.T. Muhammad (Bauchi) will reign.
