Nairaland / General / Nigerian Internet Fraudster Jailed In Uk by kokori2: 5:41pm On Jan 25, 2009
AN INTERNET fraudster has been jailed for his part in a worldwide scam which saw millions of pounds stolen from people’s bank accounts.
Adewale Taiwo (26), who worked as a process engineer at Grimley Smith Associates Ltd, based in Brigg, was one of the ‘big players’ in the UK arm of the Dark Markets website – an invitation only forum for criminals to buy and sell bank card details.
Taiwo obtained confidential online banking details from chat rooms and bank workers.
He then used the details to hack into personal accounts and transfer huge sums of money – of which he took a percentage – to clients worldwide.
Taiwo, of Victoria Dock, east Hull, admitted at Hull Crown Court defrauding around £600,000 from bank accounts around the world, including NatWest and Halifax.
Of this, about £240,000 was successfully frozen by the banks.
Police involved in the investigation believe the amount Taiwo, a Nigerian national, actually defrauded could stretch into millions.
He was jailed for five years at Hull for conspiracy to defraud between June 2004 and February 2008.
Det Insp Paul Welton of Humberside Police’s economic crime division, said: "We are delighted the court recognised this person is a big player in internet banking fraud.
"For non-violent crime, five years is seen as a stiff sentence and it recognises the impact it has had on our banks in this difficult economic climate and the misery he caused to individuals.
"Evidence gained from his computers are still being investigated by the Serious Organised Crime Agency. The actual loss to the industry could ultimately run into millions of pounds."
Taiwo was finally caught after the IT manager at Grimley Smith noticed other people’s bank account details on his computer and alerted the police.
Officers found thousands of chat room conversations, emails and bank details stored on his home and work computers.
Simon Wayley, prosecuting, said: "This was international fraud on a grand scale. He had been heavily involved for a number of years. Money was dropped into accounts in Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, the US and Russia."
More than £160,000 had been deposited into Taiwo’s own personal bank accounts since 2006 from unknown sources.
Taiwo obtained confidential online banking details from chat rooms and bank workers. He then used the details to hack into personal accounts and transfer huge sums of money – of which he took a percentage – to clients worldwide. The court heard one method he used was to set up a joint bank account with the customer, then transfer the money into an anonymous account.
Another involved moving the customer’s money from a savings account to a regular account, then setting up a fraudulent standing order.
His targets were personal bank accounts, including a pension fund and even a clergyman’s account.
Sentencing Taiwo, Judge David Tremberg told him: "You played a heavily active role in an international conspiracy. There were in excess of 100 victims and dozens of financial institutions were put at risk. You have undermined public confidence in the safety of online banking."
Taiwo moved to Hull for work in 2006, after graduating from The University of Manchester.
Judge Tremberg recommended Taiwo be deported to Nigeria at the end of his sentence.
A proceeds of crime hearing is to be held to determine how much of the money he stole can be retrieved.
DETECTIVES investigating fraudster Adewale Taiwo said they may never have caught him had he not taken his criminal activities to work with him.
The 26-year-old Nigerian had set up a normal life in the UK, studying for a degree in civil engineering in Manchester before moving to Hull and getting a well-paid job at Grimley Smith in Brigg.
But his lifestyle was a front for his criminal activity, as he was a major player in organised banking fraud.
Taiwo was discovered when an IT manager at Grimley Smith became suspicious after noticing other people’s bank account details on his computer screen at work.
He contacted the police and, when detectives arrived at his workplace to arrest him, they discovered he had a hard drive concealed in a briefcase, on to which he was downloading information.
Det Sgt Chris Dawson, who led the investigation, said: "His criminal activity had become such a big part of his life at home that he had to start doing it at work, which was how he was caught. These people are very difficult to catch and it is really down to the IT manager in this case that he was caught initially.
"If he had not done it at work there is a chance he would still be doing it today."
After the sentencing, Mike Smith, managing director at Grimley Smith, said: "In late February 2008, suspicious activity was detected on Adewale Taiwo’s PC. We operate a state-of-the-art computer system with the latest security controls and monitoring systems and it was obvious that the activity was not related to our business as process engineers. We immediately notified the police, who responded very quickly and Taiwo was arrested."
He said Taiwo was immediately dismissed for gross misconduct and was later charged with conspiracy to commit fraud.
"I would urge any other company, large or small, to be vigilant and ensure that their computer systems are adequately protected against this sort of misuse," he said.
When police searched the computer equipment in his Hull flat, they discovered 211 files of information – one of which would be large enough to store the complete works of Shakespeare 364 times over.
Within the files officers discovered a comprehensive guide to internet fraud.
Taiwo had information on all types of online fraud, from taking over people’s accounts and transferring funds, to attempts to bribe bank employees for information.
Police discovered he had links all over the world and a lot of the technology to commit this fraud was coming from Russia. He had about eight online identities and had set up online groups, including a Yahoo group called bank fraud, on which he swapped information and techniques with other users about how to infiltrate banks.
They also found Trojan viruses, which steal information from a computer, and card readers and they discovered evidence he had been involved in email ‘phishing’ scams, where users are asked to enter their details into an email they believe to be from their bank.
Throughout the course of the investigation police discovered Taiwo had been conspiring to commit fraud over the past four or five years, beginning in Oldham in 2003.
Their investigation has now been passed onto the Serious Organised Crime Agency who will use the information to continue investigating fraud around the world.
Det Insp Paul Welton, of the Humberside Police economic crime division, said: "We had somebody living and working in our area who was a key part of an international serious criminal gang and the investigation continues to catch his criminal contacts."

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Man City's 175m Pounds Bid For Kaka by kokori2: 3:07am On Jan 14, 2009
MANCHESTER CITY last night offered a sensational £175million in a bid to land AC Milan superstar Kaka.

SunSport understands that City chief executive Garry Cook and deal broker Kia Joorabchian met Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani to make the world-record bid.
Milan would pocket £100m and Brazilian playmaker Kaka almost £75m for a five-year deal worth £15m a season — or £280,000 per week. According to a top Milan source, the Italians’ technical director Ariedo Braida was also at the meeting.

An informant at the negotiations said: “The Manchester delegation were determined to make their offer but it was rejected.
“But our owner Silvio Berlusconi is now concerned that the player himself may want this deal to happen.”

Berlusconi said: “I hope Kaka stays.”
But Galliano told the City delegation: “We would not consider selling Kaka for £100m — it would have to be an obscene amount more.”

The Italian giants have never sold ANY of their superstars but admit they have been taken aback by the jaw-dropping bid.

Milan have twice in the past rejected megabucks offers from Real Madrid.

But what only a few months ago seemed inconceivable still looks a possibility.
The 26-year-old Brazil star was the 2007 World Player of the Year.
He was again a candidate this year but Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned as his successor in Zurich on Monday.
The midfielder has been the cornerstone of Milan’s success in recent years.
If City’s offer is eventually successful it will eclipse the world record £46m transfer that took Zinedine Zidane from Juventus to Real Madrid in 2001.
Kaka currently earns £10.8m a year at Milan and is the second-highest paid player in Serie A behind £11m-a-year Zlatan Ibrahimovic,

City boss Mark Hughes would be thrilled to pair Kaka with his fellow Brazilian Robinho.

Hughes was already keen to strengthen his midfield before yesterday’s news that Dietmar Hamann is out for three months.

The former Germany star, who suffered the injury in training, will travel to Switzerland to see a specialist for the exact diagnosis.

Hughes, already without long-term injury victims Michael Johnson and Martin Petrov, said: “Didi kicked a ball in training and unfortunately it looks like he may have ruptured a tendon.
“The best-case scenario is that it will be nine weeks, but it could be 12.
“We are a bit light in midfield areas so we could have done without this.” www.thesun.co.uk

I THINK THIS IS VERY RIDICULOUS, IN A TIME THAT THE CREDIT CRUNCH IS BITING SO HARD,THIS CLUB IS OFFERING THIS STUPENDOUS MONEY FOR A PLAYER,

I bought 200,000units Benue cement@N3.50k which amounted to N700,000 during their rights issue.sold the stock @N35 and made a cool profit of N6.2m.i was able to do my MBA in UK and also sponsored my wife's masters in UK too.Though i have lost over N5m in the downturn now but life is like that. There is nothing that goes up that doesn't come down. You gain sometimes,u lose sometimes. My father trained us with stocks,so it's worthwhile.
Overall,i am still buying stocks but the lesson is that buy coys with strong fundamentals like FBN,GTB,UBA,UBN etc and not yeye stocks like transcorpse, sterling, starcoms, etc THE MARKET WILL STILL BOUNCE BACK , ALSO,DONT KEEP ALL UR EGGS IN ONE BASKET,

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Man City Offer 14m Pounds For Taiwo by kokori2: 8:46am On Jan 10, 2009
MANCHESTER CITY have failed with a £14million bid for Marseille star Taye Taiwo.
Now boss Mark Hughes is ready to offer £19m flop Jo in part exchange for the versatile Nigerian ace.

Hughes’ move for Taiwo, 23, could also mean the end for Brazilian winger Elano. Free-kick specialist Taiwo is equally at home at left-back or on the left of midfield.
With new £12m signing Wayne Bridge filling the defensive slot, it is Elano’s midfield position which is under threat
Hughes will not be held to ransom but believes he can salvage the deal by offloading some of his deadwood.
